I can't believe P.Toale doesn't have a rating yet! He is an absolutely amazing professor. Yes, the class is hard. Yes, you are going to have to study. But Toale really wants his students to do well and he is more than willing to give you extra help/credit if you talk to him outside of class! I would highly recommend him!!!
He's a great teacher. Very clear and extremely helpful! He can teach. Most of the physics teachers that I know of are kinda weird but he's not!Physics is not an easy class. But if you go to class, do your homework, go to exam review session and you'll do fine! It needs effort too!!So far, I've made an A and am aiming for an A+!! =)
He's a nice guy and he tries to teach, but he teaches by giving formulas instead of working the problems out. The tests are a lot harder than the notes, but scaled pretty fairly. I would really try to choose another teacher.
He is such a nice guy and very helpful. The class is hard but he curves a lot. I did not do great on all the tests but with all the curving and extra points from the homework I ended up with an A.... so I recommend him!
Toale is great! Physics isn't an easy class in general so obviously it takes some work on your part. But he really wants everyone to do well and is willing to help. Lots of in class assignments help bring up your grade if you don't test well. He sometimes goes over your head while explaining things but overall, a great professor.
Dr. Toale is probably one of the better professors at UA. PH 102 is NOT an easy class with anyone. If you want to make an A you need to do 100% of the in chapter and end of chapter problems. Find the textbook solution manual for sale or free online somewhere and it will help. DONT expect to make above a D on tests if you study less than 5-6 hours.
Dr. Toale is really nice, just not a great teacher. He shows lots of examples in class, however the homework varies greatly from in class examples as do the test questions. He is, however, really good about wanting you to do well and is open to meeting with you for additional help. Nice guy, just not a great teacher.
Good teacher, difficult hard subject matter.
He knows the stuff almost too well. Dr. Toale's method of teaching is very formula-based and heavy on integral calculus. Homework and classwork are difficult, but the grading is very lenient on those. The tests, on the other hand, are very easy but are so short that each question is pretty much a letter grade, and he rarely curves. Nice Guy.
The online Homework can get tough, but it's good. No extraneous homework, predictable. clicker questions
Physics is a hard, hard subject. He makes it bearable. Our class averages were so low that he continuously has to curve, but I know if the past he has not done that so do not bank on that. If you think you can study the night before and succeed you're wrong. Study ahead and see him for any questions you have and you should be fine.
I took Dr. Toale for PH 102 over the summer. Physics is a tough class, there's no way around it, but Dr. Toale made it very manageable. He's a great teacher that genuinely cares about his students and was very willing to help outside of class. I would suggest taking his class - learned a lot and enjoyed it as much as you can enjoy physics.
He is a solid choice for physics. His tests and labs are not too hard, but his lectures and homework assignments can be more difficult than necessary. He draws out the deriving theories of concepts that can be lost in focus during long lectures. However, grading is easy in this class if you do your work. Beware his TA's are not helpful tho.
Dr. Toale is very kind and nice. He is very thorough in his lectures and if you ask him for help outside of class he is always willing to help you. He doesn't make you feel small for asking stupid questions. I wish I took him for my other physics courses.
His lectures were very long and sometimes hard to follow. Did example problems from the book and took attendance through Clicker quizzes most days. His tests were really difficult.
Dr. Toale is a clear, effective professor. The material was tough, but Dr. Toale was very willing to help outside of class so that you could understand it. His tests are fair, and his grading is reasonable. He has clicker questions almost every day. Do expect to put in some time and work for his class, but I would absolutely recommend him.
PH102 is a tough class, but Toale makes it manageable. He is a good teacher and cares a lot about his students. The downside is his tests are hard and multiple choice and short, each question is basically a letter grade.
Toale is a good prof. and he is the best physics teacher I've ever had. He teaches a predictable class with daily clicker questions, weekly hw's, and weekly reading quizzes. Tests are only 14 questions multiple choice, so there's no room to screw up on them. I highly recommend him as a prof. even though his tests are a pain, he's a good lecturer
Physics 102 is a tough course, but Toale is by far the best guy to take. He is a good lecturer and really cares about his students. The tests are tough and short, and each question is basically worth a letter grade.
Very thorough and tells you what to expect. Very into subject and more than willing to take extra time to explain concepts.
All round great teacher, gives fluent, interesting lectures, and always ready to help in office hours. Allows cheat sheets on tests and tests tend to focus on easier concepts covered in class. Webassigns suck, but thats true for every physics class. Took him for 106, and took him again for 253.
Best Physics teacher at UA! I highly recommend taking him! As long as you take notes in class and go through homework you will make an A on the test!
My favorite teacher at UA thus far. Hes very understanding and lenient about hw. (he will reopen them if needed) Hes easy to listen to and probably the best teacher for this class. The class is honestly the WORST class I have taken but he made it manageable. I ended with a 88 and he rounded to an A. My hero.
This class with Toale was way easier than physics 101. His tests are exactly what you would expect, no tricks. The homework is straight from chegg and a large part of your grade. Clickers are only 5% so you don't have to come to class if you don't want to. He doesn't give good notes but he's helpful in office hours. Honestly easiest physics class.
Toale really knows physics, what he doesn't know is what is happening in lab or what he is assigning for homework. Rarely does the homework match what is done in class or in lab and he will review topics for the first time in class after making their assignment due two weeks prior. The tests look nothing like the homework and somewhat like lecture.
Physics isn't gonna be an easy A no matter what but this class was significantly easier than 101. His tests are super short but most of the questions are really basic. He makes the material as simple as possible and you can actually understand what he's saying which is a plus.
Toale is easily one of the most straightforward and fair professors in the Physics department. He made PH 102 very manageable, and I would highly recommend him to anyone for whom that course is required.
Professor Toale is a very nice guy but this class is very hard. You get a cheat sheet on the tests but I wrote down every single homework problem down on mine and it didn't help at all. His lectures are more conceptual which isn't the type of learner I am which may be why I struggled. Got a 35% on both the final and first test and still got a B.
Toale was a great teacher. He was very loud, very clear, and offered great examples in class. Attendance is required as he does clicker questions, but we all received 100 on the clickers if 80% of the class completed SOIs.
Professor Toale is so over-rated. He explains things in a way that someone who already knows physics would understand, not those completely new to the subject. Homework isn't hard, per se, but there is a lot of it and weekly reading quizzes, which help your grade. Overall, I do not recommend him. Boring, unhelpful, pompous.
Toale was overall a pretty good professor. Sometimes he gets off on tangents where he derives the things to get to the equation, which is the only thing you really need to write down, but besides that it's fine. Tests are super hard, but he seems to know this because they only count for 15% of the total grade. Overall I recommend him.
Toale's lectures can be extremely confusing for someone who is not already knowledgable in the subject of physics. I know many people who do not even try to keep up with his lectures because of this. His tests are fine, go over the powerpoint slides and textbook problems. Definitely not a super easy class but doable.
In lectures he goes so in depth and does a very complicated example for 20 min of class... only to say that we won't need to know that! His lectures are awful and he is just all over the place, no one in our class ever knew what was going on and I just had to learn the material from the book. But he is still considered to be better than other profs
UA does not currently have a very great physics department, so Toale is probably the best you're gonna get for 105. The tests are very short and challenging so a lot of people fail them. However, he makes the class so that if you get a 66 average on the tests/final, you will get a B in the class. Toale is helpful in office hours, so take advantage.
Doing the HW alone will not help you on the tests. In fact, few of the tests look like the HW. Make sure you pay attention to all examples he does in class! Also, after every test, go in for office hours, you can write down every question from the test and look at answer key. He is very nice and chill and willing to help. He gave small curve at end
I'm surprised at the bad reviews for Toale, my best guess is it is just the sorority girls on their mac imessage half the lecture. I just had him and the lectures are simple, easy to follow, and no surprises on exams. Toale's mannerisms/style is pretty funny/laid back. The PowerPoint questions from lectures are nearly IDENTICAL to exam questions.
He is the best! I was worried going into Physics 2, but he was so helpful during office hours and his lectures are straight forward! The test are not tricky at all, but there is only about 12-15 questions so you have to be careful! His final wasn't as bad as people say, half of It is composed of your old tests! 10/10
didn't think an A was going to happen despite never working harder. Huge curve at end, test avgs abysmal. hw q's rarely correct on chegg. good formula sheet, prayerbest test prep. all MC:2nd test concepts SUCK. toale is a good, confident lecturer but i sat in every class and felt dumb. only time i've ever sat in a class and understood nothing
this class was a lot harder than expected. all of the homework answers were online, bu the tests were basically impossible and mostly everyone failed. I finished with an okay grade, but this class stressed me out so much. BTW this is for his astronomy (AY) 101 course, not PH
If you want an easy class don't take this. If you're actually interested and want to learn go ahead but it is very heavy for a beginner. LOTS of homework but I found it all online .very nice guy just boring lectures. gave me an extension on an exam when i slept in he really does care about us. i eventually stopped watching class and still passed
Dr. Toale is a solid choice for physics. He prepares you well for the exams and there are not really any surprises. Your grade is based on lab, homework, and tests. The tests are only about 10% each so you can bring your grade up by doing well on homework and lab! Highly recommend!
Toale is a great professor and he really knows his stuff. His tests are fair and straightforward. There is no reason you shouldn't do well if you study and work for your grades. The only complaint I heard about him this semester was that he never emailed students back which made it difficult with most of the class being online.
Here's the thing - he is not really the best teacher. He goes through a power point that is usually pretty interesting and he does know his stuff (he worked on a telescope in Antartica). However, this class is a breeze. Pro tip: every answer is on quizlet and it is all open book. I would have had a 100+ if I had realized that sooner. EASY A!!!
I took this basically all online, but Toale is a really good lecturer, very clear and easy to understand and his notes are very clear and helpful as well. Tests were on mastering and very simple, and you make your own formula sheet. My only complaint was that the mastering hw takes forever and is usually more complicated than the tests
You have to try to not get an A. Super easy! AWESOME guy!!!
Lectures are to the point. Even though he draws a lot, take notes; it pays in dividends come test time. Homework ranges anywhere from an inconvenience to a brutal stretch, and there is a lot of it. Test problems are 10x easier than homework, and are also open book. Many quizzes and labs too, but those aren't that bad.
Dr. Toale is a solid physics professor and is super chill. He was very accommodating when I needed to take a test on a different date. Homework makes up a pretty big chunk of your grade, so be sure to complete it for some easy points.
He's definitely one of the best teachers to take for physics 102. It's pretty much impossible to not do good in this class as long as you go on the days you do a lab in person. He's a super fun guy, super helpful, and tries his best to help you understand the material.
Toale is an amazing professor! The exams are fair and aren't too much of your grade. There was lots of homework.. so get a Chegg account and you'll be golden. Best professor to take for 102!
Tbh i never showed up to this lecture and forgot to do most of the online assignments, but I managed to pass with a C because I showed up to every lab. The labs were ridiculously hard but just sit next to a smart looking person and make friends with them and youll be fine
Great physics prof- I'm horrible at physics but he made it super easy to follow. Posts really good reviews about a week before each test, and lets you make full page formula sheets for all of them (and the final). Also, he drops one exam, and the labs are weighted the same as tests and are virtually participation grades. Take him :)
I think Physics is hard in general, but Dr. Toale tries to make the concepts as basic as possible so that everyone can understand. There is a lot of homework and the tests are fair, but definitely study for them. However, he does not answer his emails so if you want help definitely go to office hours, he can help a lot during that period of time.
Professor Toale is the best physics professor I have come across. For Physics 2, the concepts can be quite abstract and he made it very easy to understand the concepts. His lectures are pretty interesting and kept my attention in a usually dull subject. He outlined every test and allowed a sheet of notes for each one making it easy to do well.
Great professor, would definitely reccomend. Always found his lectues and extra credit oppurtunities interesting, even though I only took this class as a natural science. If you talk to him, he seems happy that people are interested in astronomy.
Dr. Toale gives off a vibe like he hates his job. Always seems bothered and annoyed. His lectures are very boring, and tests are near impossible. Homework is really easy and there is not a lot of it. He will not respond to your emails at all. He does cancel class kinda often which is good. He seems like a nice, funny guy, but not the best teacher.
Great prof, pretty interesting lectures, super nice and helpful if you aren't understanding things. Homework not very hard but SO MUCH for this course, tests were strangely tough IMO as well.
Dr. Toale is a very good physics professor. His lectures are easy to understand and he provides all the resources for success in his class. He also provides room for mistakes when grading assignments and tests.
i love patrick. i literally did not show up for exam 3 and i passed. my exam average was a 57.71%, and my homework average was a 88.74% and i passed with a c-. i am satisfied with my grade however if you would like a higher grade i would recommend showing up and studying for more than 2 days before. love you
Dr. Toale made physics bearable. I didn't do well in PH 101 but Dr. Toale helped me throughout PH 102 to get better grades. He curves some of the exams and offered to make our best exam 15% of our grade and worse exam 5% if we filled out the SOI. Can put anything on the equation sheet. He is a nice, carefree guy. I recommend taking him if you can.
I am not great at physics, but Dr. Toale made this class bearable. LOTS of homework though compared to other classes taken.
Decent Lecturer ,although sometimes he over analyzes and isn't clear about the topics. He's a pretty friendly professor and gives out some extra credit opportunities. However, the homework assignments are very dense and really difficult. They also don't help you for tests. Prepare to spend at least 3-4 hours doing homework outside of class.
Lots of work, but it is all helpful. Not much extra credit, but the labs and group exercises were graded fairly easily.
Professor Toale is a very chill and relaxed professor. He would come into class wearing Marvel shirts and flip-flops but his lectures were always very interesting and you can tell that he sincerely cares about astronomy. He is also very understanding and will likely help if you have difficulties.
I hated this class and he did not answer emails, at ALL. No ones emails were answered, whether it was regarding a missed test or inability to pay for the materials. His lectures were also boring. I did better in the lab than the class. Don't take AY 101, take biology or something.
Great guy.
Good professor. Lectures are a bit hard to get through, but he is very friendly and gives an extra point back on the first test for going to office hours. Scales the tests at the end of the semesters depending on SOI completion. Doc Pat is a great guy and is forgiving with late work, although homework is very long.
Reads off slides for lectures but then goes into examples. Grading is very fair and labs and practice problems are very relevant to the material at hand. Toale cares deeply about his students and wants them to succeed.
Laid back and chill professor. Was not too hard of a class, just study before exams. Clickers during class for 5% of grade, exams, homework. Homework is awful and takes forever but a quick search helps out. No math required, curved exams by 10 points. Lectures were interesting and were useful to go to. Definitely recommend him.
Toale is a really nice guy but the class had an insane amount of homework. Along with this, I felt like I had to primarily teach myself.
Dr. Toale is the best physics professor on this campus. He cares about his students' success and he has office hours four times each week. The content is definitely difficult, but the tests are fair and if you stay on top of the work you will succeed.
Dr. Toale is overall good. Lectures are long. HW is 50% of your grade, 10% for 3 Exams and 20% for the final. The test were rather hard but he post a summary before each exam. He does not curve he will offer to make your lowest exam 5% if the class does SOI. He is really nice. Study the group exercise for Test. He is really accessible outside.
I've taken Patrick Toale for Ph105 and Ay101 and in both classes he's been extremely knowledgable on the material within the course and is also willing to work with you on late grades. Cool dude.
Patrick is a super nice guy, his class is east. He curves so insanely. He requires a lot of homework but all the answers are online and all the test answer are in the study modules that he provides. Homeowkr is helpful for studying. Hes funny too! Just do the work and you will be rewarded.
He is an amazing professor who cares a lot about his students. His lectures tell you what you need to know and he gives you all the equations you'll need before the test. You just have to make your own formula sheet. Tests are mostly math based with maybe a quarter being conceptual. Definitely would take any class with him if I could.
Professor Toale is great!! It's hard to make lectures engaging when they are 2 hours long, but he usually does a good job of that. You get a page with anything you want written on it for exams, so they are not too difficult. The only thing is the amount of homework; some weeks we had around 8-12 hours. However, he is a great professor!!
I have had jobs that have asked less than Dr. Toale. He stole my weekends for an entire semester because of the sheer amount of homework he assigns. The most punishing format for exams (short AND multiple choice). VERY clear when he thinks a question is dumb. Completely disrespectful to students. Do not take him if you value your mental health.
His lectures are almost impossible to listen to for the whole two hours. Gives insanely long and useless homework that will take at least 5 hours every week. He even said, when asked, that the homework questions won't help you study for the test. Doesn't give you any practice for the exam. would avoid if possible.
Definitely the best for any physics class!! HW kind of sucks, but Toale is good at explaining concepts that are not always intuitive. You get a cheat sheet for each test, and there's a good bit of extra credit throughout the semester. We also got review questions the class before 2 of the tests.
Toale is great. The lectures are long, but I learned a lot from them and thought they were useful. The homework does suck because it is Pearson and does take awhile to complete but the tests aren't terrible. You get a full sheet with whatever you want on it which makes the tests easier. Toale really cares and wants to help. I would take him again.
Dr. Toale's an absolutely amazing professor. His lectures are very engaging and interesting. There were two short MCQ exams throughout the semester. There is a lot of weekly homework, but it does make you learn the material. He is very accessible after class and at office hours and is very accommodating if you simply ask. Best PH option by far.
He uses the PH106 lecture slides and skips through half of them. He doesn't pay attention to the content of the hw most times so half the questions won't be relevant to the exam, but exams are weighted low so bad test scores won't kill you. You'll prob end up doing pre-lecture quizzes ab 3 weeks before the actual lecture. not bad, just annoying.
Dr.Toale is nice. I had a heavy course load and didn't prioritize his class but still managed to do well. I didn't go to his 2 hour lectures because of my busy schedule but I would uaully study a few days before the test and do okay. He heavily curves test and cancelled our cumulative final!!
A decent lecturer, although his slides contain lots of content he has absolutely no intention of testing you on. Did not respond to a single one of my emails, but he's approachable after class.
Very nice guy. Beware if you take it MWF you will have a 110min lecture (but you can skip and be ok). You get to take a single-page formula sheet to all the tests. If you took Physics C Mechanics, this is honestly easier than AP was. He curved both of our tests and made the one you did better on worth more. The labs were not very hard.
He's such a kind person who genuinely wants the best out of students. He curves all 3 exams (which aren't even difficult). He let's you bring in a handwritten "cheat sheet" with any info you want to write on it. The only thing I will say is that he's not good about reminding students of upcoming homework, which isn't long or hard anyway.
Attending lectures isn't mandatory, but attending the labs (which are most of the class hours anyways) is. Tests have so few questions that bombing one is incredibly easy if you're not careful.
He's a great professor that really cares about his students and their success, MANY extra credit opportunities, to a point where it's nearly impossible to fail, even with bad test grades, with that being said content is very challenging mathematically and conceptually, but overall I'd highly recommended him for PH-101 or any class really.
