He actually replaced our old professor and made the class incredibly interesting. He's great at lecturing, but a harsh grader. I'd definitely take him again given the chance.
Great instructor! He took this class over because the original instructor was unable to continue with the class (not her fault) and he made it his own without changing anything in the syllabus at all. He made the material fun, interesting, educational, enlightening and thought provoking. If you ever get a chance to take a class from him, DO IT!
He's great!!!!
He goes on rants about random things that he is passionate about. Never boring though. Just wish he would have graded all the work I did in his class.
He's an alright teacher. He just kind of goes off on random tangents that don't pertain to much at all that goes on in the class. Plus it's weird that he is teaching us how to teach when he has never even taught in the classroom himself.
Dr. Vrooman is the type of teacher you want to have. Though he has not in the classroom himself, he is very knowledgable of educating students on the mannerisms of classrooms. He is a tremendous leader and is always willing to lend a helping hand.
Vrooman is an awesome professor! He uses articles instead of a textbook in order for his students to be more interested and it's a lot more up to date than most textbooks. I always left his class with new ideas in my head that I would generally research further. Very interesting class.
Great Professor! Really cares for his students.
I've never had a better teacher. He is NEVER boring and always keeps us up-to-date on things happening. He really cares for his students and will do anything to help us. I love this class, and will continue to take it every semester. I definitely recommend it!
Excellent teacher. You will have a lot of work with a lot of papers, but it is worth it.
I love Doctor V! He care so deeply about education and his students. He's always willing to help and not just with school work. Just go to his office if you need help or just somebody to listen to you rant. He's so funny and has great hair. Vrooman is by far the best professor here at BGSU.
Doctor Vrooman is a great professor. His view on education is eye-opening. His class requires a lot of work, a lot of reading and writing. Overall, I really enjoyed his class. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it. I would recommend him as a professor.
Dr. Vrooman is very helpful, so ask questions if you have them. He wants you to dig deep into material so you can develop your own opinions. Don't skim things- take the opportunity to actually learn from the material he gives you.
He is very opinionated and no matter what you say, he is only one sided. He is on his own side and tries to talk you out of teaching. Good luck.
Dr. Vrooman is absolutely fantastic and really helped me decide what I want to do with my career and future. He will push you hard and give you a lot of work, but only because he knows you can handle it, do it well, and learn so much from it. This course was amazing (though the GAs could be less than helpful sometimes), but Vrooman is phenomenal.
Alot of class work but it really doesn't take long at all. You can talk to him about anything and if you need extensions on the work they don't have a problem with it as long as you talk to them. Classes are more like discussions rather than an actual class. Best part is he doesn't believe in textbooks.
You do LOADS of work (a paper, a 20+ page article and write up of the article) every 2 weeks, and then your final grade is determined by one paper. I emailed him about 3 months ago and haven't heard back from him. I was incredibly disappointed with him and this class.
By far my favorite professor I've had here, though I enjoy writing. He'll make you think. His format includes a LOT of writing and class discussion, but his key point is that writing helps you formulate ideas/opinions. He is eccentric enough to make things interesting, yet very accessible and easy to talk to/listen to.
I was disappointed in this class. He is teaching future educators of K-12 classrooms and has never taught in a K-12 classroom himself. Therefore, he really has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to problems in education today. He has a very skewed few of what the real world education is like.
Dr. Vrooman is awesome. The class in general is tough- they do things differently every year, so I can't give specifics, but it is a lot of work and a lot of reading. However, Dr. Vrooman really cares about what we get out of our experience in the class. It appears that he wants us to see everything that education has to offer, and it's great.
The class is pretty work-intensive, but Vrooman makes it worth it. You write formatted summary papers of long articles every other week, but they're all on education theories and styles, so they're very valuable. Vrooman is always willing to give feedback if you ask and his lectures are great and very inspiring. Totally recommend this class.
This class was extremely stressful. Do LOADS of work every week. Get ready to read scholarly articles that won't really help you in the future other than critically thinking. SHOW UP TO CLASS OR YOU WON'T PASS & there are no excuses. VERY UNORGANIZED. One paper determines you grade. GOOD LUCK!!!
Dr. Vrooman is a great Professor. He is very intelligent and passionate about what he teaches. He has good humor which makes the less more enjoyable. His class is mandatory and he never lets you out early.
Dr. Vrooman is amazing. I really thought I would hate this class, but he is incredibly knowledgable and inspiring. Read A LOT, wrote A TON, but learned so much more. Be prepared to put in the work - it is absolutely essential to your success. Easy A if you're willing to do your part.
Amazing experience. He actually cares about the thoughts that you're having. And it's not just so that he can argue against them.
Unorganized
I was warned by my advisor how difficult this class would be, but I didn't expect it to be this ridiculous, especially for a TWO CREDIT class. I put in more work for this class as I do for all of my other classes combined. I also don't like how your entire grade is based on one final paper and if you missed one assignment its 5% of your grade.
He is very hard to work with because he is stuck in his own mind. He does not respond to emails and does not think to highly of you if you debate dropping his course for an easier professor.
Dr. Vrooman has awesome lectures that really inspired me as a future teacher! This class is made to weed people out of the education program so be ready for lots of work and for the final paper (which is your only grade in the class). Any missed class or assignments is 5% off your final grade from your paper so come to class and do the work!
EDTL 2010 is the ultimate weed out class. At times, I think it is designed to make you not want to pursue education. It has an insane grading criteria that is all based on one final discernment paper. The final grade was basically determined like this Grade on Final Paper - 5% for every class/assignment you didn't do. Final Grade.
Dr. Vrooman is incredible. I cant thank him enough for the passion he instilled in me. He is brilliant and genuinely wants you to love what you do. If youre passionate about teaching, youll LOVE findings. If you hate them, maybe teaching isnt for you. Take the time to get to know Vrooman. Hes a chill dude.
I absolutely love this course! You get out into the field of teaching, and he gives useful PowerPoint to help you learn more about what you will be doing after you graduate. Has guest speakers very often, and is very relatable. Very funny, and very dad like. Everything is graded by the grad assistants and you final grade is one big paper.
A great professor and an even better man! He loves his job and has great insight into the field of education. He makes you work, but what you learn is so rewarding. He is very student centered and wants to do everything to help you succeed in school and in life. He is a great mentor and advocate and is the best professor I have had at BGSU so far.
EDTL 2010 is supposedly the class that makes students drop out of the teaching profession. Vrooman makes the lecture attached to this class overly boring, and has a scholarly article and a findings due every week. However he is very passionate about what he does, and which I respect him for.
You have to buy a $30 book that will be be used for an access code only. Any time you are absent from class or miss an assignment it is 5% knocked off your final grade. Your final grade is based upon a paper and then each X you get is 5% knocked off of the paper. That is how your final grade is determined.
Vrooman is wonderful. He is such an interesting dude who really cares about education and wants to inspire students. That being said, this is a weed out class. Get ready to work. If you don't do the work: you will fail. Simple as that. The final grade is determined by a discernment paper. I believe the ECCO version is much more discussion based.
This class is a lot of work, and attendance is mandatory if you want to pass. Each time you miss a class, it's 5% off your final grade. Your final grade is based off of a paper you write at the end of the semester. Personally, I wouldn't say the class is hard, it is just very time consuming.
This professor is amazing and I learned so much from him. His passion for education is contagious and he really gets you thinking about things you'd never thought about before. He is a great person.
This class does not mess around. Deadlines are absolute. One absence or missed assignment is an automatic 5% off of your final grade. No excuses for absences, unfortunately. Assignments are either approved with a checkmark or disapproved with an x. X is incomplete and will also be 5% off of your final grade. You learn a lot. You work A LOT.
This class is a ton of work for only 3 credit hours but it is used to help you decide if the career is really for you. If you want to be a teacher you will get an A and be prepared for the major. However, if you arent willing to try it helps you move on to a different major.
Vrooman is a real gem if you join the ECCO learning community, but if not, you might struggle and fail. He really wants to push you and see if you are content with education after all. My recommendation is to get on his good side, always talk to him, and DO THE READING ASAP.
Vrooman is amzing! He is great at explaining things if you do not understand something. He wll bend over backwards to help you pass. The final paper is a BEAST, but afterwards you honestly have a better understanding of Education as a whole. Would recommend him to anyone going in to education! I would take any class that he teaches.
Although Dr. Vrooman is a very good professor and is passionate about what he does, this class is very laborious. But, I am happy I took it, because I realized I don't want to teach anymore. Not because of the classwork, but because he is so good at what he does, he REALLY makes you sure this is what you want to do. But he doesn't answer emails.
I took this class spring of my freshmen year and i am now currently a senior and that class is still the hardest one I've had. He tries to weed out those that don't want to be teachers but he does this through LOTS of homework. If you miss a day of then its 10% off of your final grade and funerals don't count as a valid excuse !!!
Vrooman is the best don't let other people scare you away.
This class is a weed out class. That being said be ready to do lots of work. The whole class has a million assignments that all lead up to the final paper which is basically your final grade. Every assignment not up to your GA's standards is 5% off final grade along with every class you miss and no exceptions will be made.
He just gives busy work.
Attendance in this class is worth 5% of your final grade. A lot of your nights will be spent copying and pasting quotes for hours. Be prepared to spend hours doing homework. Many all nighters were spent because of this class. If the homework is not done and revised the class will not be passed. Vrooman was a good professor but the class was hard.
Major weed-out class. Only one grade, a paper due at the end of the semester, and if you don't complete an assignment, show up to class, or do a good enough job on assignments, he automatically deducts 5% from your final grade. Unfortunately is currently the only professor who teaches EDTL 2010. Just be prepared to do a lot of busy work reading.
Grading style kind of sucks. If you miss 2 classes, you get 10% off your final grade. Changes for extra credit but it definitely sets you up for the rest of education classes at BGSU.
Lots of busy work for your grade to only be determined by the very last final paper, but attendance and doing all the work is very important otherwise you will NOT pass this class.
You have to write a paper about what you don't know you don't know. It's dumb and complicated. Hell of a lot of homework with small groups, if you get stressed out by sharing your work be prepared to cry every day.
Intro to ed was the worst experience of my life.
Vrooman is like the best professor I have ever had and I wish every class I had was taught by him and why?? because I ACTUALLY learned something in his class. You dive into real discussions about the problems in education and he continues to make me passionate about teaching. There's lots of reading, a hard paper (that I got 102% on), all worth it
For it being only is 3 credit hours it is A LOT of work. The class should be a 4 credit hour class not 3. He does NONE of the gradings it is all of the TAs that do it so any fo your questions go to him. This class has been exhausting. What everyone else has said is true
This class is very difficult. There's a lot of busy work (20-30+ pages of reading and 2 5 page+ writings every week). This class is graded by 1 paper at the end of the year. Your attendance and homeworks do not count towards your grade, but will hurt you if not done, so if you do poorly on this paper, you'll fail. Class sucks, Vrooman's cool though.
I failed this class twice. It was the worst class that I have ever taken. I did 6+ hours of homework each week. It like I don't take other classes because he gives so much work. The 8-10 page paper at the end of the semester is the hardest thing you will ever write and is the only thing that goes to your final grade. Every assignment incomplete 5%.
This is the "weed out" class for education majors. You will have readings and papers on a weekly basis. You WILL cry, at least once. All grades except for the final paper are pass/fail which means the final paper's grade determines your final grade. GET AS MANY EXTRA CREDITS AS YOU CAN GET!!!
There is a lot of reading in this class but the work is not as bad as people make it out to be. Vrooman is an alright dude but he never responds to emails- message your GA or TA if you have questions. As long as you get the work done for this class it really is not too bad.
Basically one final 10 page paper determines your letter grade in this class but there were hundreds of assignments that if you didnt do or got an incomplete, you lost 5% off your final grade. I learned absolutely nothing. I almost dropped my major because of this class and they take pride in it. This class was unnecessarily useless.
Vrooman was an amazing teacher overall. Although the class was confusing and unorganized, he was the best teacher ive had so far. YOU HAVE TO PUT IN EFFORT, if not you will fail. Attendance is also mandatory... if you skip your grade will drop 5% each time. Overall amazing teacher!!
Professor Vrooman has a lot of information but it just doesn't seem to fit the Education field. It would be better to say he would fit the Philosophy of education. You will read an article a week at least, generally 12 plus pages long. Then work in a group to compare different articles. The final paper is the only grade that really matters.
There is a substantial amount of reading/annotating each week and they are only graded as "complete". Hopefully you have a good GA/TA because they can help for your final paper. The only grade received in this course is your big discernment paper in the last week of the semester, but they do offer extra credit. Must work hard!
Vrooman is tasked with one thing and one thing only, to weed students out. He himself is a good person but the EDTL 2010 is difficult and tedious. Each class is with 5% of your entire grade and there are close to none excuses to get you out of it, including bad dorm WiFi. You better pray you get a nice TA or youll be thinking about changing majors
I love Prof. Vrooman as a person. He is so funny, so engaging and knows a TON about this subject area. However, this class is very much here to weed people out. You have to want to be there. Each time you don't show up is 5% off of your grade that is already limited to your final paper and the weekly articles you complete. Expect to put in hours.
This class is pretty hard. But if you show up and do your best on the weekly assignments and quizzes, you'll get a pretty good grade. The final paper is tough, but you get to meet with your Graduate Assistant and revise it to get a better grade. You'll really get into some interesting stuff in this class, which made it a lot easier to handle!
Vrooman is an amazing person and will support you throughout your education journey. but if you dont want to be all in on education then dont do it. its tough and theres a lot of reading, but hes very understanding and a good dude! the final paper is rough, but really it all depends on your GAs
Good Prof. EDTL 2010 is based on one assignment about concept change throughout the semester. Very eccentric man that clearly cares about his content field.
Dr. Vrooman is a wonderful professor. He truly cares about each and every one of his students. The class is difficult if you are not ready to fully throw yourself into education. You have to be passionate and willing to do the work to get a good grade. Attendance is mandatory or you will not pass. Befriend the TA/GA because they do the grading.
Dr. Vrooman would literally bend over backwards for any one of his students. If you need any help at all he will be there for you in a heartbeat. He is caring and passionate about what he teaches. You can tell that his heart is in it 100% and that he is excited to be there every single day.
You can tell that he cares about the content he is teaching. He has some good information to share and he sits with students during small group discussions and listens to everyone. There is a lot of reading each week and each class missed is minus 5%. Your grade comes from the final paper. Difficult class but you get some useful information.
This course is a lot of reading. Be ready to read every week and fill out assignments to go along with your homework and annotations. Vrooman gets a bad wrap, in my opinion. He is a realist and will be very genuine in sharing his thoughts and ideas in the field of education. This course is a weeding out class, so they have to be tough on you.
Each day you do not show up for class, you lose 5% on your final grade, which is based SOLELY off of your discernment paper at the end of the semester. I get that it is a weed out class, but this is honestly the worst class I have ever taken in my life and wouldn't recommend It to my worst enemy.
Professor Vrooman is very passionate, and an exciting guy to listen to. In terms of his class, there's lots of reading, and basically your entire grade is based on one paper. However, there are cushions, such as extra credit and corrections. All in all, this is not the class to slack in.
Dr. Patrick Vrooman has been one of my favorite professors. He is hilarious and truly cares for each of his students. Yes, there is a lot of work in this class. But, if you force yourself to do the work, you can easily pass with an A. The discernment paper will sound harder than it truly is.
Vrooman is a decent professor. The class is a lot of work, though. If you dont do an assignment or miss a class its 5% off your final grade every time.
I loved this class and loved the professor. If taken in a bigger lecture, I have heard it is a harder course because TA's grade differently (harder or easier) based on who it is. But I had a smaller class due to a program I was involved in and I liked the class. Just homework heavy but was interesting depending on the week.
He is a real good dude
He’s a very caring guy and clearly knows his stuff and is enthusiastic about it. Not very accessible over email, but does well with text and meeting in person. Had a lot of fun and definitely recommend this to anyone even slightly interested!
This class is so tedious and difficult. You have to read and annotate an average of like 30 pages a week and answer questions about them. It's way too much work especially since you either get complete or incomplete, every x in your grades is -5% from your final paper which is the only actual grade in the class. So if you do bad on that... whelp...
In this class, we learned about these animals called "conceptual critters." We all have them living in our heads pretty much. Some of them are real animals that just look really scary like this one crazy camel thing while others are literally just humans or monsters. One that looks like a monster got angry and attacked me. Otherwise, it was fun!
i really enjoyed vrooman! you could tell he was very passionate about what he was teaching. super energetic, which i think more professors need to be like. it makes the classroom feel more inclusive, and comfortable. there is a lot of reading/assignments due with them. honestly, it was a lot, but not THAT bad. manage your time and its not bad.
This class is a weed out class. The homework is very tedious and takes a long time to complete even if you manage your time well. Make sure you come to class and complete your homework correctly or else you will lose 5% of your final grade which is one 8-10 page paper.
Vrooman was really passionate, not only about the material but also about our learning. His dedication was very helpful, and the discussions were extremely valuable. His attitude in class and in feedback was incredible, and I actually looked forward to class a lot. Homework was lengthy, but I found it to be relevant and worthwhile.
This man assigned me what could possibly be the dumbest assignment ever. It is so foul, that it ruins the whole class, which is otherwise fine.
Gave way too much homework for just participation. You HAVE to attend lectures, seminars, and lab no matter if you are sick or you will lose 5% of your grade. Class was OK just very boring and made us read the stupidest articles. Most homework was 30-60 pages of annotations,2-page paper, and a quiz every week for participation. Only take if needed.
A big word of advice: This class is based off of a metaphor. You might hate him but eventually you'll see what he's trying to do. I personally don't work well with metaphors, but I got it at the end of the year. The class is primarily instructed by the TAs, and you will have a LOT of work & reading to do. THIS IS A WEED-OUT CLASS unfortunately.
Vrooman was a nice man, but this class was quite ridiculous and just nonsense. The homework was an insane amount of work for it to just be participation. Nothing in this class had clear instructions. Also, attendance is MANDATORY. You will fail this class if you don't go. Overall, I thought this class was just a bunch of busy work.
This is hands down the hardest class I have ever taken. Vrooman is a decent man, but the amount of coursework you have to complete is beyond outrageous. If you have to take this class, which is required for all education majors, I suggest preparing for the worst and completing as many of your assignments as early as you can.
The attendance policy in this class is horrible. Every class you miss is 5% off of your overall grade, and they DO NOT take doctors notes as an excused absence. No matter how well you do on findings, and how much effort you put into the class each week, if you miss enough classes you will fail. I was hospitalized and even that was not accepted.
The 40-page readings and analysis every week is insane. The biggest issue I have is the lack of control he has over his TA's. I worked very hard but because I was making little mistakes (capitalizing the citation in my paper) my TA gave me zeros, causing me to fail the class. I had to drop with 3 weeks left and retake the course. Never again.
Nice guy but way too much work. Giving us 30 to 40 page articles every week and having to read, annotat, and possibly write an essay just in a day or 2 is ridiculous. STAY AWAY.
I took this class spring 2024 and he took pride in people not passing his class. I ended up in the emergency room because I was having stroke-like symptoms and he told me that wasn't an excuse and I still had to show up to class. He would give us about 24 hours of homework a week and made me change my major.
Honestly the class itself wasn't that hard but there is just a lot of work that can make your other classes more difficult. Don't miss class, turn in all homework and go to office hours with your TA and you will be fine. This class is not for the weak.
I was warned about this class. All nighters every week. Even when I tried to get ahead of assignments, the boring articles mixed with the annotations killed me and I couldn't bring myself to finish them. Vrooman himself isn't bad, he doesn't do any of the grading. But I still wouldn't wish this class on my worst enemy. Almost made me switch majors
Dr. Vrooman himself is a very amazing professor. I did enjoy his lectures so far, and I love his good sense of humor. However, the assignments, the quizzes, and everything else that we do for his class beg to differ. If you are going to major in education, be ready for this course with him as you'll be taking lots of annotations (usually 30+ pages)
Dr. Vrooman assigns weekly 40-page articles that need to be thoroughly annotated for credit. He also doesn't post grades. However, the class itself is pretty easy after the first few weeks.
Vrooman himself is a good guy with a good sense of humor. This class requires a lot of attention and participation. Annotations every week, usually 30+ pages, and a quiz. Depending on your TA though, they are not hard, just tedious. All is taken for participation only. I am happy for this class to be over, but you will survive. Just attend class.
EDFI 2980 Great guy! Course work is sometimes dry and is always very long.
There is not really a set curriculum for this class, we basically read and annotated a 40+ page article every week regarding different topics. The class felt like a lot of pointless busy work but the discussions were interesting at times. Honestly as long as you do the work and show up you will get a good grade, but it was a struggle.
For EDFI 2980: I love him, he is such an all over the place guy who is so easy to talk to and genuinely wants to help you out. He definitely is an out there guy but he is so great. This class was a lot of reading and annotating and is only graded on the final paper and attendance (and checks or x's) but there is extra credit. Really enjoyed it.
I do not understand this class at all. There is to much going on, it's like he is trying to throw every type of teaching at you. Lots of reading and no time to get it done. So many groups and get ready to wake up at 5am
He is an absolute, flake.
Vrooman's class is challenging, with heavy workloads and strict attendance policies. However, engaging with the material and utilizing resources like Unstuck study can help manage the demands. The class is worth the effort if you're committed.
Awful. This professor is outrages. The work and work load was cruel. Guy doesn't even teach. Have to read and annotate 30-40 pages every week. Talk with groups about what you read and basically teach them. I don't even know the purpose or what i'm supposed to be learning in this class. Final exam takes hours to do and will make you hate it.
This professor was VERY kind. Not too sure why I are so many people hating on him. The work was beneficial and honestly very informative.
Lots of busywork. None of it is too difficult, but make sure to stay on top of it or you will fall behind quickly. His lectures weren't related to the course 80% of the time. Nice guy, but I didn't feel like I learned a lot from his class. We did field experiences with this course and didn't even really reflect on it at all. It was weird
Vrooman is a nice guy, but his class is not very important. Annotations are not difficult if you stay on top of them. TA's grade the annotations so hopefully you get a kind one. Final Exam isn't too terrible but make sure you take notes on the different topics each week because it will make the exam wayyy easier!
I was worried that others would be a very tough class, but found it to be extremely easy as long as you did not miss class, and did good annotations. The final exam was a lot easier then expected most people I heard got an A on it, missing class would kill your grade however.
Vrooman is overall a nice person and has an energetic personality. There is no textbook, and one paper is required at the beginning of the year. This course was reading-heavy, as students read and annotate large articles once a week. If you use your time wisely, this isn't hard. Just do the work and show up to class.
Dr. Vrooman is one of the best professors there is. He's funny, engaging, and is super passionate about the topics he teaches and helps relate it to the real world. Class participation is sooo easy because he truly listens and cares about what you have to say. I was surprised to read so many negative reviews on his page. TAKE HIS LEAD1000 CLASS!!!!
Professor Vrooman is a joy to have. He is funny and engaging. In LEAD 1000, participation is very important, but he makes it easy to speak up. He never talks down to us or condescendingly. Also, I never read the book and finished the class with a 100.6% so it's easy to have an A. Overall, a very enjoyable class, and I would 100% take it again.
I loved having Patty! He is fun and engaging. Participation does matter in LEAD 1000, but he makes you want to talk. He's never mean or condescending. I never read any of the textbook material and still got an A; he goes over everything in class. There will be lots of group discussions, so be prepared for that, but would 100% take this course again
Super passionate about his subject and had great music taste. Too much work assigned, and feedback was unclear due to large amount of external teachers doing the grading. Always picked on our group, I swear we tried to hide from him, and he'd find us. There was many other groups he could talk to. Interesting material in class, but too much at once.
