hard, but a good guy to take, worth the challenge.

Very helpful if you see him during office hoursor in the writing center. Good pace for lesson plan. If you keep up in class, you should be fine.

He has passion for writing and seems to be quite knowledgable about it. However, the material never changes and he is not the best at explaining things and giving examples.
He's very smart and love his subject, but he's a hard grader and expects too much.
I thought he stated what he wanted in our papers clearly and was willing to help us. Overall I enjoyed the class more then I thought I would.
This class was challenging and really prepared me for writing at an intense liberal arts school. If you put in alot of effort, he will help you become a better writer. He's a great prof, I would recommend him to anyone, even if you hate writing! (I thought I was a horrible writer until this class)
Very tough grader but fair. Very demanding, and had high expectations for class.
11/12 Great work Patrick.A lot learned in a small amount of time.(YES!)You had a distinctive voice throughout both classes.Passionate about your work, great class discussions-could have used a little bit of proofreading though-presentation DOES count!Selected readings(very good) movies (a little hard to follow) but all in all- an awesome teacher.
High expectations, but it's great. Keeps you on your toes.He can be infureating as far as feedback, but talk with him,he's always ready to help/"discuss"[read: debate] Also, he picks the Dover and Penguin editions of your readings, so it's all quite cheap. He's hard, this entery alone would earn me a...6/8? Plus.he is cute-there it's out,but is he?
intriguing....very intriguing
He did not give out a heavy load of work, his requirements were simple and reasonable. There were no tests. He was funny and knowledgeable.
Great classes taught by a great teacher. Does expect a lot from students and pushes students to grow while in his classes. Not the instructor for students who want to slide by, but for those who want to learn and grow. Great Job, Patrick.
Patrick is very helpful teacher. Especially if english is your second language. just do your assingments and don't miss class . He's not easy as far as grading goes. But he will help you and guide you with your problems.
This teacher was the most horrible teacher out of all the teachers I have ever had in writting. he is constant, non-stop rambling on what to put into a paper (non-text, subject A and B), but never clear on how to put "material" into it. he isn't helpful and always ignores his duties as a teacher. i recommend that you never choose this teacher what
I took Mr. Walters' class during the summer of '03 and thought he was a pretty easy instructor. We wrote a total of 4 papers with the longest one being 4~5 pages long so relatively all short essays.
Great class, great teacher. Learned a lot about how to watch films more critically. If you go to class and are active in the discussion, you'll do well and you'll have a lot of fun!
this teacher is crazy hard.. the book he chose is so difficult and boring... all his classes are the same.. text.. quo.. text.. So difficult. and he's very hard on grading. Don't take him if you are not good at english!!!
I learned more from this writing teacher than any previous teacher that i have had.If you are willing to put in the effort you will learn A LOT from this teacher. Do not take this class if you do not know basic English grammar as he is very picky. You will be learning writing not grammar. Highly Recommended if you are serious.
ubber snob
This teacher was horrible. Now when I write a paper I find myself second guessing everything I do, The class really didnt like him either. He would end his discussion 5 minutes early and jolt out of the classroom because he knew the grades he was returning were ridiculous. This is the worst teacher IVe had at pcc in 2 years ive been here
Intelligent. Humorous. Very helpful during office hours. What more do you want?
he is pretty good, it will be a shock when you first start his classes but after a while you get the feel of what he expects, he is very specific about what he wants from you and he ll keep deducting marks from your paper until you get it right! but when you do.. then its down hill from there just keep it up and he ll love your papers
This teacher is great. He is hard if you completely lack interest or if you already think your writing skills are good enough. I found his teaching style very interesting and helpful. The assignments were demanding but I enjoyed his class.
Instructor Walters was a pretty lousy teacher. His papers had to be: A. Non-text B. Textual material (A and B)and C. Conclusion. The textbook was ridiculous. It read more like stories instead of research papers. Instead of having us write research papers, he would make us analyze the essays from the book. Also, he spoke in a monotone voice.
I had a blast in his Shakespeare class and am taking the second half next term. He inspires and moderates really fantastic discussion, and really makes you dig into the text for extra meaning. And when he pulls in his theater knowledge, it's just fantastic. Absolutely recommend him, hilarious and intelligent.
Great hand talking
Quirky sense of humor with subtle references to drug and alcohol abuse. Occasionally cantankerous, able to create thunderstorms on command.
He can be a bit unclear when it comes to what he wants out of you in his papers, but is otherwise a really cool guy. I loved my Shakespeare class and the discussions we had as a class. Very knowledgeable, very funny and always willing to help.
I came away with a lot of knowledge from the class, and I like him a lot as a person. That being said hes a huge stickler for formating and will mark your paper down for it. Prefers your papers to be informative/structured writing rather than creative writing, so it can be difficult if most of your writing talents lie in the creative aspects.
My all time favorite professor. I have now been fortunate enough to have attended four courses taught by him. He has made me sad that I have exhausted the possibilties to learn from him. Never shied away from telling you that you were wrong or right. You could change his mind with a strong argument. Forced clarity into my writing.
Walters is a great teacher! He does give a large work load, but he grades on production, which is incredible helpful for beginning writing classes! The first two papers I did received C's, the second two B's, and the fifth an A, and I got an A in the class. I also missed a few days.If Walters can see you are learning and working hard, you get an A.
his class was difficult, even for my best subject. We did a lot of anyaltical reading, but to me, I had no frame of reference for the stories that took place over 20 or 30 years ago. it seemed like we spent each class, going over the same with, except with a different story. He was confusing on what to put in your paper, and is a tough grader.
do not recomend this prof. to any1!!I worked my butt off soo hard in his class & even though i passed, i'm still not sure what he wanted!I mean i took notes &did everything he asked &got a c on my 1st paper..excelled all his criterias for my second one and got a b.gave up and didnt try as hard for last and got A!!he grades whatever pops in his head
This teacher was awesome and worked with me really hard to get me to pass the grade. I got a bad grade in the end but that was my fault (head was not in the game) even still I thought he was a really good teacher.
I took three classes with Walters. The best teacher ever. Actually gives useful feedback.
He was one of the best teachers I've ever had! The workload is reasonable and he really cares about helping you as a writer. He grades based on how well you do at the end of the class, so you're not weighed down by mistakes you may have made on your first paper. His class is just all around fantastic. I highly recommend it!
hilarious and intelligent
amazing
I had Patrick for a writing class some years back. His teaching style inspired a unique enthusiasm for the class and an actual enjoyment of the material we used. I never enjoyed 'McBeth' better and never laughed harder at 'Arnse' in 'As I Lay Dying'. But most importantly still and unbeknownst to him, he inspired in me an enthusiasm for writing.
I hate writing, but Walters helped me through it. The toughest but best writing teacher at PCC. At first his lectures are kinda hard to follow, but stick with it, you will understand as he goes over the same stuff again and again. He will meet with you to help you progress. If you want easy, look elsewhere, you want to be taught, then he's the one!
Patrick will push you to give all you have in your essays. It's not easy, but you do learn a lot.
I took his 115 & his 121 Writing class, so I will say that he is a wonderful teacher I have learn so much from him, he is paciente, helful, good advisor in how to do your work, he get back to you in a quick mannar, he work with you all the way.
Mr. Walters is very particular. I learned a lot from him but I noticed he grades low at first and high at the end of the term. No matter what you do. He also wants the papers with a very specific format. Take notes and follow his words and you should be fine. oh! He can be a little aggressive in class too, I have had worse though.
Awesome teacher. If you are looking to truly improve your writing skills, this is the teacher for you. He is EXTREMELY particular, but grades on improvement as long as you have been showing up to class. Will lecture some things to death, but you really understand what is expected. Not the easiest writing class, but I'm a far better writer for it.
great teacher. expects you to show up and DONT USE UR PHONE IN CLASS :P he gives great advice on what you need to work on with your writing and will always answer any question you have. Don't be discouraged if you get a low grade at first, he grades mostly on improvement. and when something is 'optional' DO IT ANYWAY! :D
He is very good at being very vague with what he wants for assignments.
I usually love English but Walters completely sucked the life out of this subject. All he did was talk during class in a dry, boring, monotone and made very little effort towards inspiring his students to enjoy the subject. The work was graded very harshly and even as an A student, I barely made it out with a B.
If you want to fail, take this class. Very unclear teaching style. Expects perfectly written reports with minimal instructions. He seems like he is bored with what he teaches, very unapproachable. Do not take him!
This class was difficult and hard to sit through. I would not recommend taking his WR121 course.
After class size dropped 1/4 in the first week and Walters openly ridiculed students for asking for clarification, I should have known. But I decided to stick it out, being an honor student with a tutor, I should be able to excel. I was wrong. Run away, far and fast. Vague, contradictory and just plain rude to those asking for help.
I loved this class! Granted, I can tell his teaching style is not for everyone. He definitely was not easy, so if you are looking for an easy A, do not take his class. I liked the way he explained concepts and focused on what type of structural essays he wanted. It was challenging and he gave great feed back!
Patrick lectures for the whole 2 hours and most of the time it doesn't have to do with anything you are doing. The articles he gives you to write about a boring and hard to work with. All of the papers have to have a lot of quote work. I wouldn't take a class from him again. Too boring and a wast of your time
If you have done a lot of literature analysis you won't learn anything from him. If you don't have the same ideas about the text as him he will correct you and make you feel stupid (but his ideas are really interesting) . There is no wrong way to analyze literature. His lectures were long and painful.
I went to rate my professor and saw horror stories, but he was an amazing teacher. I was prepared to drop the class after his rmp, but he took my least favorite subject and made it my favorite class of the term. He was clear, helpful, and encouraging. He wasn't easy, but he prepared you well. I'm signed up for his 122. Plus, NO TEXTBOOK!
He is a nice guy & some of the things he says are funny but overall Id say he is bad at teaching & communicating. The only written instructions you receive on the 3 papers you write (25% 35% 35% of your grade respectively) is the brief syllabus. His lectures are also long and vague and thinking back he basically rephrased the same 2 things all term
He preassigns essays to write about. He is very unclear what type of essay it should be and what you should be writing about because he doesn't want to give you any ideas. I've been stuck writing the same paper for a week analyzing and trying to find a connection. I LOVED writing and was excited before taking this course. Wish I could drop
His assignments are really specific. He wants you to write what he would write about and what style he writes in. He won't appreciate an individual different style of writing. He is very specific about the topic too and very less freedom in class. Very tough grader too even if you put in a lot of effort he only hands out B's and hardly any A's.
Really tough class! Although the class work wasn't difficult he is a very tough grader! My scores did not reflect my effort at all. After going to him multiple times and the writing center I still received a mediocre B on my paper. Very disappointing...
Invested in the subject matter, leads interesting discussions. Nice guy, with a good sense of humor. He gives great feedback on papers, and gives them back quickly. He managed the class well. Attendance and getting assignments in on time are crucial to getting a good grade.
Hardest class I gave ever taken. I am a student who takes all A's on most if not all my classes, but I failed this one.
This was my first writing class in college (I got high school credit for WR121). We wrote three essays that got progressively longer. There was a lot of reading, and practically daily work needed to keep up. It was hard, but I love writing, and I got a lot out of it.
probably the worst class and professor I've ever had. He was socially awkward toward students and was a super tough grader. I felt like everyone was scared of him because he just had no expression on his face. Be ready to read a bunch of short stories of nonsense then having to create papers on them. I missed 3 classes and that is why he gave me aF
There is no required textbook but A LOT of articles you have to read. I liked the class overall, but if you are not a strong writer, this class is going to be pretty difficult
Im not the greatest writer but I have never been critiqued so heavily and put down so much. He gives vague requirements for papers and if you do all the requirements but doesnt like the way you talk in the paper than youre screwed. Wish he would help us write rather than critique other good writers and give us clear examples of what he wants.
He is vague with requirements for papers but even if you meet all the requirements he tells us but still doesnt like how you explain your prompt you will be graded poorly. Ive never been the strongest writer but he really puts you down and doesnt even care that you tried. I wouldnt recommend if you need help with writing.
Hardest writing class I've ever taken. I've always been confident in my writing abilities until taking this class, now I feel like I'm stupid from his comments. Tough grader and biased - he doesn't acknowledge different writing styles other than his own and will count you down for differing ideas.
If you're looking to take an easy writing class where you'll just get the usual A for effort, Patrick isn't for you. If you really and truly want to improve your writing skills and get ready for university, definitely take his class. He's like a drill sergeant and will whip your writing into shape, which a lot of students can't handle.
If you are looking for a class to fail then here it is. Walters is a tough grader. Grades based on opinion, you don't get any real feedback on your papers. I LOVE writing and he ruined it. I am a good student and have almost all straight A's. I barely passed his class with a C.
I took his class and failed it, took the same class with another teacher and got an A. Do not take this professor.
The course was rigorous. I began the course thinking I was fantastic at writing and he taught me the basics that I needed to improve. I received a low grade my first paper but after finding help through his work hours I improved very well. Hes been an exceptional teacher and wants all his students to improve in their writing capabilities.
Do you like a healthy mix of socially awkward conversations and highly confusing lectures in class? Then this is for you. Patrick is nice, but he is very hard to follow in class. The only way you can truly understand his teaching style is if you look up Pepe Silvia meme on google. That is how describes topics. You are welcome.
The class is tough, no question about that. Walters will frequently have something to critique on your paper and your answers in class. If you do not prepare for the papers, you will not pass. The class is HUMBLING. Be open to criticism and participate in class OFTEN. He has a dry sense of humor and truly cares about students who respect the class.
The most difficult writing class I've ever taken. I thought I was an okay writer, but I was not prepared for Walters. He definitely helped me improve though, and gave me lots of credit for trying. His lectures seem disorganized, and it was difficult to follow along. The comment below about Pepe Silvia is perfect. You must be willing to work hard.
This writing class was the hardest writing class I had ever taken. He is very unorganized and doesn't give good responses to your work. He has very strict deadlines and with his demand and it is hard to keep up. This teacher made me hate writing. And I retook this course with a different teacher and received an A.
The hardest writing instructor ever. Dont fall for no text books required. Youre required to read print out essays and must have x amount of lines. He wants you to write with restrictions or else you will automatically get a grade deduct. A tough grader AND does not give out A. Im an A student and he was the first one to hand me a D. (Regret)
Great teacher. Made me look at film in a new way!
Walters was TERRIBLE. Do not take a class with this professor. He did not teach me anything and his expectations were ridiculous. If you paper wasn't typed on word he could tell and would grade you down. You're expected to write exactly how he wants you to and if you cant achieve that, expect a bad grade. He also does not care about his students.
Was a somewhat difficult grader but since I followed his feedback on my papers I was able to bring my work up to A levels. Very smart and passionate about film. I learned a lot from this class. You can miss 4 classes without affecting your grade, too. :)
In 121 he only requires you to write 3 essays but hes not flexible on the due date even when my dad passed unexpectedly. He doesnt care about his students and he doesnt read his emails. Hes a tough grader
His expectations are unreal for this level of class. You'll write a kind of paper, such as research papers, but you don't follow the common guidelines for writing a research paper. You write them in his style. He'll not provide any kind of writing outline, just a lot of special rules for how he wants you to write them. I hate writing now.
Only 3 grades in the entire semester and didnt tell us what those grades were until the end.
Only 3 papers the entire term but he doesn't specify what he is grading us on, gives really vague feedback, very inconsistent grader. No idea what my grade was until the very end of the term. Not very helpful at all during class. Condescending at times. Would not take again, and would not recommend. Genuinely made me dislike writing.
Very confusing grader. Doesn't understand online classes or how to use the online site that our school uses. There's only three assignments throughout the entire term, and he will give you a score for each one, but wont tell you out of what the scores are. Gives very confusing feedback that can be condescending at times. Turns writing into a chore.
I cannot describe how infuriating Patrick's class is. If you don't abide by his insane, vague, and convoluted rules for writing assignments, then please drop the class in time to get a refund. In my class that I took, there was little room for error because the class only has four assignments, so don't slip up if you want to even think of passsing
I left a review on February 10th, 2021. I am willing to raise his rating to write another because I have more to say. Patrick wastes time in class by asking the class a question, but he has a very specific answer in mind. Remember the confusing rules? If you can't navigate them, prepare for condescension and passive aggressive notes on your work.
I don't think I've ever had a teacher as mean as he is. He is super passive-aggressive when you ask him questions, give horrible, rude feedback on essays, is accusatory, grades incredibly strictly, wastes class time rambling, and has unreasonable requirements for writing. He has incredibly specific and unrealistic standards. Do not take his class.
Walter's is so unclear about everything he wants from his classes, I feel like I had to teach myself most of the term. Nothing is satisfactory for him. You don't know what your grades are until the end of the term and gives unclear and vague feedback. Doesn't use PCC online platform how it is supposed to be used and is SO unbelievably rude.
I don't have enough characters to describe how bad this class was. Heck, I could write an essay on it. I'm sure Walters is a good guy, but he's a horrible writing teacher. Class time felt useless as several times we covered basic sentence structure that anyone in WR121 should know. 200/10 would never even consider taking again.
I enjoyed this class, it was difficult but I thought it was the right amount of grading. I know other people didnt enjoy it because of the harsh grading, but if you know what he wants and you actually take his notes into account you can do really well on the papers. in person definitely helped with some of the instructions and feedback.
I would not recommend anyone take this class. Not only did I not know my grade until the end of the term I also didn't know what he was grading out of at all when I got it. He makes you feel dumb for asking a question on his lectures and isn't clear in what he wants out of our papers. Above all else, he is a very harsh grader.
Extremely hard with grading and passive with comments he left on papers, he didnt use d2l to insert grades and there was no room to improve your overall grade with there only being 3 assignments the whole course.
very strict, 0* out of 5
I thought his class was tough but mostly fair. I think he expects you to participate in class and that goes to the grade on your paper to an extent. There are only 3 papers so there are few chances to improve your grade. If you can just get the paper in on time that's really half the battle. It's a difficult class but I thought he did a fair job.
Patrick is a hard teacher, but has good lectures that are informative and helpful with the homework. He can go on some left wing tangents at times, and his assigned readings are all from a very progressive website called Aeon. The class did help me become a better writer, Patrick knows a lot about how to write effectively and efficiently.
Avoid at all costs! The class taught didn't fit the description at all. Feedback on papers was written in messy cursive jammed in the margins. The professor spent much of class in monologue, and didn't reply to my emails. Syllabus had typos and no rubric or overall grading breakdown of points and assignments. So confusing and boring. Not worth it.
Never have I ever had this much trouble staying awake in a class. My class has dropped from about 20 students to 4 in record time, the only people still in here HAVE to stay and pass for one reason or another. Even his eyebrows have dropped this course. Despite having only 4 people left, the lectures are still incredibly impersonal and unengaging.
Showed some really cool films targeted to the youthful A24 demographic (me lol). Expects a lot of class discussion, but I found it really helpful for developing tools to analyze film. The more you give, the more you get.
There is 0 chance of making this guy happy just avoid at all costs.
I struggled quite a bit due to my lack of experience with essays. You can tell he's really interested what he teaches and I found class discussion to be enthralling! I was sad to have to drop the class. Did not like that there were only 3 papers for assignments but they were all great picks. He taught me essay writing can be interesting!
This class you are mainly graded on few big essays. When I got my essays back the feedback was unclear and hard to even read. When I tried to ask him questions he would just tell me to "hurry up" Not a bad person, but if your wondering if this class is worth it no. I have never done this bad in an English class.
Unhelpful when I asked questions, while avoiding ever giving an answer. Has illegible handwriting and said he would not try to make it better. Does not address nessary format of paper until 2 lectures before paper is due. Overall he is very grumpy and unapproachable.
Walters' class is a struggle - lectures are dry, grading is inconsistent, and expectations are unclear. However, unstuck study helped me stay on track. Overall, a challenging but manageable course.
Patrick constantly contradicts himself, going back and forth about what he wants in papers, and gets mad if you ask questions he thinks are obvious. The papers are 6-8 pages long with paragraphs spanning over a page. He thinks he knows how to talk about racism and sexism, but uses sexist examples in class. He means well, but I'd skip this class.
Dont. Patrick is not clear about assignments, and he has no grading criteria to ensure you can do well. His lectures were just him talking about his favorite films and he would get frustrated nobody would raise their hands because the class wasn't engaged. I didn't learn anything and wish I could get the time back. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.
You will have to write four 1500-word essays analyzing the direction of the films. His feedback consists of unreadable, messy cursive crammed in the margins of your paper, and there is no clear grading criteria. The lectures are two boring hours of him ranting about his interpretation of the film, with no actual lessons or learning.
