Patrick is great! Take as many courses as you can from him. He makes class fun and intersting. There are few instructors as good as him!
What can I say…the guy is a legend! You’ll never want to miss his class because it’s so funny, interesting, and enjoyable. He sets up his classroom in a way that really helps you learn, he engages the class and doesn’t just lecture the entire class period. He’ll also bend over backward to help you out in any way he can, and is just an all around s
Great guy! He made this complex class fun and interesting. He's very willing to help you, and is also understanding of student's lives. Clear study guides gaurentee you an A on tests. Read most of the readings and join the class discussions and you'll sail though this class. Oh yeah, 5-7 page paper due at end of term.
Williams is an amazing teacher ... while he takes the course seriously (as we all should!), he goes out of his way to be available and helpful. He maintains a very neutral position on polarized topics, acting marvelously as a facilitator and not opinionated activits. Take time on your term paper - he's super-serious about it!
Good guy! just pay attention to study guide, show up for class, and you'll get an A.
Wastes a lot of time in class talking mostly to himself. We used the first week entirely for introductions and other nonsense and barely got started the second week. It's impossible to pay attention to him as little as he engages the class.
He's an ok teacher when he does decide to teach, but seems to have a hard time finding the time to do that. I would highly recommend figuring out who the other religion teacher is and taking a class from her.
Patrick is a pretty good teacher, always willing to help. This is a great class for discoverying your personal views on Religion. Fairly easy class if you are engaged in class and make use of the study guides. There is a 6 to 8 page paper at the end of the term.
The worst teacher I've had at Chemeketa yet. I feel like I'm stuck in a high school class. He doesn't appear to really respect his students and has the strictest assignment turn-in policy I've ever encountered (both in college and K-12 education). I will never take a class with him again and would never recommend him to anyone.
Despite others' good reviews, I found this instructor's attitude to be superior and condescending. The syllabus was a train wreck. There are much better instructors out there.
I really liked his class style, how quickly he reply to questions, and quickly he submitted grades. Great class! You should take it!
Great teacher! Nothing more needs to be said.
Very difficult in online philosophy format. Grade in online philosophy format had too much emphasis on writing than on the content of what was learned in class. Final Grade based heavily on two written papers. Class sucked.
If you like being engaged in your courses then Patrick's class is a good one. He always has great discussions and is always open to anyone's opinions or viewpoints. Just show up to class and take your papers very seriously. Do a good job and give some effort and you'll get an A.
Mr. Williams is a good teacher. I am considering taking another class from him. Be prepared to write every day. He does assign two 1500 word essays. He is approachable and will help you. He answers emails. He provided the questions for the mid-term & final so you can study.
The worst teacher i have ever had. The guy prob doesn't know that he teaches in college not some middle school. would not reccomend. PEOPLE STAY AWAY FROM THAT TEACHER!!!!!!!
This guy is not a very good teacher at all. I am very suprised at all the good comments. He is VERY rude and loves to be in control. I would definately find out who the other religion teacher is and take him. this williams guy sucks
Patrick is an extremely helpful teacher that I would highly recommend. I do wish that he would (for his religion classes) let us know his own world view, but such is life. His horseshoe classroom setup was very welcoming, and it was nice to have strict rules about listening when someone else (including students) was talking. Take this professor.
He's ok, but his grading system is not easy at all. I'm an straight A student, and I had trouble just because of his system. I worked hard, but his system is seriously hacked. I would stay away.
He controls the class to get everyone involved. I highly recommend him to anyone. I changed my major because of his time he spent helping me. He holds students accountable and that is why there is negitive in this site. I like Patrick a lot!
Patrick is serious about teaching this very complicated subject, which is why people seem to think he teaches like you're in elementary school?.. you have to really focus. the tests are fairly easy so if you participate and work hard on the papers you will get a good grade. patrick is one of the best teachers i have ever had and ill take him again
This was a fairly easy class, you just have to show up and engage. He gives you the pre-test which is basically the test, so there is no way you can fail. His personality is what bothered me, he is very organized and anal. He comes across rude sometimes, but then again he is easy to approach. I personally will not take another class with him...
The online course is horrible. He cares more about the amount of writing you do as opposed to whether it is the correct answer. He will viciously deduct points if you responses are less than a set amount of words. Personally, I think the right answer is more important than a long answer. I will not take him again and I do not recommend him.
So class laid out and structured to a T. He gives you a handout every class. His tone doesn?t change the whole class. Towards the end I didn?t want to talk to him afraid he would think question was stupid and answer it like ?how could you ask that?. I get A in other classes for essays but his class C. Study guides are the tests USE them.
His classes are structured and that is difficult for young people to handle. Patrick is great at not showing his worldview in his classes and one would NEVER guess what his views are. He offers office time for any student and has a heart open to assisting others in finding their worldview. I am an older student and found him to be above all others!
Be careful about the length assignments are required to be,if you miss the requirement by a few words you will get NO CREDIT. Quite a bit of reading, and a discussion based on the reading is done each week and 3 papers per term. If possible do not take this class online...was difficult to follow with very little interaction with the instructor.
He was a decent teacher. I took his class online. He always responded quick to your questions via email as well as offer feedback for grades. Lots of writing for this class and he is a pretty strict teacher when it comes to the essays (which are the bulk of your points). Tough grader. You have to be above average to possibly get an A
Rude, Mean, and a horrible teacher! I took his class online and the grading curve he uses is a freaking joke! I'm a straight A student and got my first D ever! He is above you and make sure that you know it... for sure shouldn't be a teacher. Teachers are supposed to have a way of making you want to learn not making you cry for asking a question!
Epic profile pic! Good class, fair professor. Willing to meet students halfway. Helpfull via email and in person
I have no issue with this instructor, taking the class online and I'm registered for another of his classes next term. Word count requirements aren't my favorite things, I think they reduce the quality of students' responses but whatever, we are all grown ups and unfortunately we can't just create our own classes:)
I would not reccomend taking any courses from this guy.I am shocked that anyone gave him a positive rating. He is harsh, rude and ruins any good will and intrinsic motivation you may have towards the subject. Good teachers inspire students, this guy makes you dread going to class. Turned a subject I was interested in,to a subject I wanted to avoid.
I found this teacher was really willing to listen and help you to get a good grade in the class. He is really big on emailing any questions or issue you are having, very prompt with responses. He has an odd teaching style and requires your engagment in the class. I found it fun and interesting. Not too much out of class work mostly reading
I was nervous about taking an online class. This instructor made it a great experience for me. He was always quick to respond to my emails and made it clear that he was available to help. I received valuable feedback on my posts and midterm essay. I always knew where I stood in the class and what I needed to do to improve.
Professor Williams is one of the most involved and caring teachers I have ever had. I loved being a part of his class and would love to have future classes taught by him.
Good class. Instructor was very helpful and open with feedback. Interesting subject matter- no matter what the other comments say, it is not hard to get an A in the class if you can follow directions!Too many people who take online classes don't want to do work and that will not fly in this class- if you do the work, you will succeed.
Good for the most part, willing to answer questions and clarify concepts. However, unwilling to accept validity of others' thoughts even when supported by evidence. Basically, if you don't agree, you are wrong.
I did not personally like him at all. Do not bring your cell phones or have them out. He demands attention, and treats students like they are 5 years old. His class itself is pretty easy...lots of discussion. He makes you talk in front of the class, so be prepared. He is very anal, and I would never take another class from him again.
i took his middle eastern religions class and it was really easy. however he keeps a short leash on class discussions and it kind of sucks out the fun of the class. i was looking forward to heated theological debates. instead i got sugar coated views of each of the religions we studied, and never got to delve deeper into any religion
Patrick is a great professor. While many students feel like the class is dull it really is not. He creates a very safe and interesting learning enviornment that is easy to focus in. Through his classes if you choose to you can learn a lot about yourself. He doesnt allow cellphones etc., he simply wants your attention. As any good professor should.
Really great teacher! Very respectful and caring. Creates a good atmosphere for the class. I enjoyed this class very much.
Take his class. He is the most awesome and caring teacher in Chemeketa. I was sick and had to drop his class, but he always kept in touch to help me. I was so moving. He's an easy teacher, understanding and passionate. Class time fly through quickly. Easy quiz and exams. 2 essays for the term. Fun topic to discuss. 100% recommend him
Williams is a not your ordinary chemeketa instructor. I took his philosophy class online and it was more challenging than I expected. The overall total points you can get from this class is a lot less than any other class so it's hard to get an A. He does respond very quickly to e-mails and is willing to help out as much as possible.
Definitly would not reccomend taking his class. It started off ok, and went progressively downhill from there. We interacted (by force) a lot in his class, and he seemed to pick favorites. I read all the text (a ton), participaited, did the homework, and still came out with a C in his class. Just doesn't connect well with his students, very rude.
I have taken PHL 201 and REL 201 & 202. expects a lot, but if you do what is assigned, come to class, and do the reading you will be golden. He provides everything you need for midterms and finals- actually gives you the questions- which makes studying a whole lot easier. Overall good teacher- very understanding and open to help if asked.
Williams is a good instructor with clear instructions. I took this class online, and yes it was a challenge. Williams does respond quickly to any questions and wants to see you succeed, but due to the unusually low amount of points given in the class, it is hard to receive a high grade. Midterm and Final are based off of reading.
I was really excited about philosophy before taking his class now I never want to pick up a philosophy book again. I liked the text book it is easy to understand and interesting. I don't like Mr. Williams teaching style. He pretends to care but he just wants us all to fail. I will never take a class from him again. His standards are impossible.
He's a nice guy that seems really enthusiastic-But is the most boring professor I have ever had(dropped the class). We spent the first 3 classes going through the syllabus, and then were forced to interact with other students and 'get to know each other'. We were assigned reading but did no religious discussion at all in 4, 2 & 1/2 hour classes.
Very challenging teacher but expectations are clear. A lot of reading. Forces students out of their comfort zone. It's Philosophy...you come out with more questions than you had to begin with. He teaches you how to better ask the questions. I liked him a lot.
Mr.Williams is like any other professor. He wants respect, by this he doesn't want you to sit there and talk to your neighbors during class nor play idly with your phone as well. You're paying for these classes anyway, so don't act like a 13 year old in the class. Really easy to get a hold of and tries very hard to help you succeed in his class.
He was very clear in his teaching and expectations. His tests were based upon the study guides and, after I looked up the answers in the readings, I aced both tests. He required attendance, discussion, thought, lots of reading, and one fairly long paper that he gave the class weeks to do. I found him fair, helpful, non-biased, and very likable.
I loved the online class. I thought it was easy. There seems like a lot of work but it is mainly entries on your own opinions of the readings in the book. He gives feedback so that you can improve for next time. There is a paper but you can revise it at the end of the term and go from a F to an A. It is an easy class for an A or B.
Patrick Williams is an amazing teacher. He is really understanding. He gives you chance after chance to make yourself a better grade so if you fail his class it is most definitely all your fault. There is a good amount of work but to be honest I actually really enjoyed reading & doing all the work. This class was great, and so is he super intersting.
Great teacher, cool guy. He was a stickler about grading but that drives you to try harder. That being said I was failed for submitting my essay 6 mins late. I have much respect for Marines though.
I am very surprised he has such great reviews. The work load isn't too bad but he grades so hard. Basically impossible to get an A in this class. You work so hard to get grades like Cs and low Bs. Very time consuming to just receive a disappointing grade.
Not helpful at all. Assigns a ton of reading (40+ pages per week) and writing. Everything is due by Wednesday so you don't get a ton of time to work. He takes a long time to grade weekly assignments and very rarely communicates with students. It seems like he doesn't really care whether students understand or not.
This is the third class I've taken with Patrick & I'm about to get another A. Despite what some say, it IS possible to get an A in his class if you do what you are supposed to do. Yes, the workload is heavy & he has high standards, but he is fair & gives his students room for improvement. He also strongly encourages communication if you need help.
Patrick is a great teacher and contrary to others, I can say that I have had a great experience with him. This is college so expect a heavy workload and he does have high standards but you get the grade you earn. Put forth the effort and you will do well and if you struggle with something make sure to send him a message and he will get back to you.
Patrick Williams is an excellent instructor. When I started the course I thought it was going to be really difficult, but fter a few weeks into the course, I really began to enjoy the writing assignments. He is extremely helpful and really cares about his students. I highly recommend this instructor.
Patrick Williams is an excellent instructor. Although not impossible to get an A, once you figure out what he wants you should get an A. The problem I had was that it would take him forever to grade assignments (over 2 weeks on average). It almost seems he did not care about his online classes. I would take him in class if possible.
Patrick has a great way of warming the classroom up and encouraging students to speak their minds. I highly recommend taking a class from him!
Great class I enjoyed the time we spent in class very much; lots of class and group discussions In class, this class is very enjoyable and you spend the time learning and thinking and talking as opposed to doing useless busywork That said, it is a demanding class, you need to do one 1.5-3 page paper a week It's not too hard though, worth it.
Patrick really cares about his students, and he is excellent at replying to emails quickly. The class is all group discussion or small group discussion. Assignments are not difficult, and Patrick made the class engaging and fun.. Extremely good teacher.
I never intended to like Philosophy at all. I expected the usual courses where material is presented to you and you have to memorize it. But Patrick's class was totally different. You come to your own conclusions, analyze the material, and have many in class discussions. This class was totally fun and made you think!
Patrick is an amazing teacher and lets you come to your own conclusions. I had him for two terms and was impressed with how much he actually cares about his students. You can always email him with questions or meet with him to discuss topicspapers. Definitely made discussing philosophy enjoyable and safe.
Tough grader. He does allow resubmission of the final paper, which really helps. Biggest challenge is the restriction to cite only the course textbooks in forums and assignments. This can be difficult for some assignments, such as those requiring your evidence of a divine being. Longer forum-post requirements compared to other courses.
His class is definitely one you have to work for, but I also took PHL 201 with him and he is consistent in expectations and grading. He gives rubrics with every assignment, even discussions, so you know what you need to do. The first 4 weeks of class there is an essay to work on and it is due week 4 or 6 depending on the course. Would take again!
Loved this class! I came away with great understanding of the material. Readings are interesting, expectations are clear, and work is one 500-word discussion and 100-word response per week. Tests are easy and you get to revise the one essay for a better grade. Midterm and final are multiple choice and he gives a heads up on what to study. Nice guy!
Not too hard of a class if you do the readings & questions (which are the same on the quizzes) & study for the tests (2 25 question multiple choice). He's very big on social interaction and there's a 400 point essay which were big negative factors.
Professor Williams is not only a phenomenal instructor, he is also super insightful and an all-around great human being! Expectations are clear in his class and he doesn't try to trick students with confusing questions on quizzes or exams. As long as you do the reading assigned, you'll pass this course. Be aware that side talk is frowned upon.
Ethics was easily my favourite class I've taken so far at Chemeketa. Patrick is an amazing instructor. As long as you do the reading (it isn't that much, altogether maybe 20 minutes a week), you'll be fine. You only have to do two essays throughout the term, and he gives you test questions two weeks in advance. You should take this class.
Coming into this class, I did not like philosophy at all. It was required for my major, But after taking this class with Patrick my mind changed, I looked forward to the class. Participation is key in this class, it is part of the grade. He always made class engaging and very open minded about all subjects discussed. He is very great person.
Patrick was a very enjoyable teacher, and his was there best kind of cruise class, just read the material, show up and discuss it. There's a little too much full classroom discussion. The worst part of the class was him hearing out some other students for way too long. Relaxing class, easy A.
I haven't met a professor yet that was as caring and passionate about teaching as Patrick!! He cares about you succeeding and does a great job of explaining his expectations. I took the online course, and it was weekly discussion posts, two large essays along with a mid term and final. I would HIGHLY recommend taking this class!
The online class is pretty easy and the book is a good read. If you pay to be taught by a teacher you will be disappointed. The book teaches the class and you are to talk with other students weekly, that is all the instruction you will get; don't expect a teacher to be present in your online class. Maybe in person would be better?
Patrick is an amazing teacher! I took online. Yes there's lots of reading but it's philosophy, what do you expect. As an online course, of course he's not constantly on there, it's kinda your own pace and that's what online classes are for. However, he responds quick whenever you have questions and does whatever he can to help you! Highly recommed!
The expectations and instructions are very clear for an online class, especially considering how confusing philosophy concepts can be. Further, Prof. Williams is a very responsive instructor. He regularly checks and responds to emails and questions. Anyone who complains about this teacher simply did not reach out and communicate with him.
Patrick is a really caring professor that wants you to do well. He reaches out to you by email periodically and wants to hear back from you and really appreciates you. There's a bit of reading every week and in-depth discussions that help you learn the material. There's 2 tests with reviews & 2 essays & he gives you week 8-10 to revise your essays
Only class i got a B in at my two years at chemeketa. He is nice but the class is a lot of work. lots of reading and discussions. Would have been a lot better to take in class, because it was hard to know if i was understanding concepts right or not without being able to ask someone. He wants you to do well, the class is just a lot of work.
I took the online PHL201 and man was this class a joke. Patrick is a nice enough guy but there were only 2 essays and the rest was short weekly online posts/responses which he abandoned 3 weeks before finals. He gives you a list of all questions that will be on the midterm/final with page numbers where to find the answers. Easiest class ever.
So much partner work! If you are someone that doesn't enjoy switching partners every class period, don't take this class - online might be better for you. There was hardly any lecture either, and your understanding was more reliant on the partner discussion than anything else. 2 papers, easy midterm and final - identical to study guide.
I wish I had dropped his class the first day. He has 2 papers that are a big chunk of your grade. The second one's requirements are incoherent at best and a dumpster fire at worst. Everything else was easy but when grades hinge on an incompetent teacher who doesn't know what he want's in a paper it makes actually completing the course impossible.
Overall I enjoyed this professor. He was kind, fair and encouraged open dialogue. He gave opportunities to earn extra credit and revise papers. BE READY TO WRITE. He expects long discussion posts. VERY SPECIFIC criteria for assignments and will doc points for deviation. He was very accessible and extremely happy to help you out if you reach out.
2 essays that are worth a big portion of your grade yet he gives absolutely no feedback when grading them. Not only does he take a long time to do so but he will send messages like guys I'm working really hard on these papers blah blah basically playing pity card. Yet the grading is just a number. I'd suggest taking anyone else but Patrick.
I am just finishing the term and I am thinking that this may be the first college course I fail. I have completed over 100 credits and this is the worst class I have taken. There are two papers towards the end of the course that are worth 20 percent of your grade each. Writing papers is usually what usually gets me great grades. Not this time.
Be ready to put a lot of time into discussions. The essays can be confusing and on top of that he doesn't give feedback unless you meet with him person. Kind of annoying considering this is an online class. Midterm/Final are super easy to pass as he posts all the questions beforehand. If I were to take another class with him, I'd choose face2face.
He has outlandish expectations for his students that he does not hold himself to & then he expects grace. If an assignment in this course is submitted a) even 30 sec late or b) in ANY other format than Word, you'll get 0. However, the syllabus wasn't even posted until Friday of week 1 & grading takes forever. Also no lectures or helpful info posted
criteria for all assignments are provided and it is POSSIBLE to get a good grade. There are minimal assignments for you to focus mainly on the two papers which can be redone. You should have passed both WR 121/122 for this class. 7 discussions and 2 exams. Study guides are provide for the exams making them easy to do well. Do not wait to do PAPERS
You will get the grade you earn, and only what you earn. Essay assignments are worth a large portion of your grade, so read the rubric and follow it closely. The initial feedback you get on the essays is limited by a score only, but Williams is accessible via email and in person and will help you refine your work. Harder than some but doable.
This is not a Writing course but get ready to be treated like it is. Other PHL 201 in classes at Chemeketa do not required half of the work Patrick does. The course felt like it was put together last minute. He places assignments in previous weeks for no reason. No feed back is given on essays that are worth 40% of your grade.
Patrick is extremely easy to get in contact with. If you have any questions he normally responds within a day or often times that same day! Be prepared for long weekly discussions that you MUST meet the minimum word requirements or you will fail. The biggest gripe is the weight and grading of essay. Meet with him and revise and you will be fine.
Course was structured very poorly. No feed back on essays worth 40% of your grade. Test are timed with no option to go back. Work load is heavier compared to other PHL 201 classes. Takes a long time to grade. The class and professor is a joke
Syllabus isnt given till a week after the term starts. 2 essays and 2 test that make up 80% of your grade. Test are timed, essays are graded poorly with absolutely no feedback. If you wish to get feed back youll have to go in and make an appointment which defeats the purpose of an online course. The class is poorly put together
For an entry online philosophy class the professor has very high expectations. This is not a writing course but it is treated like one. Grades essays very harsh. Test questions are very random and don't relate to the topic being studied. The book was actually enjoyable, the professor not so much. His responds to help are very degrading.
Absolutely amazing! Loved his class! Was a lot of fun and highly highly recommend it. Had to take one philosophy class as gen. Ed. for my degree, but I will gladly take more philosophy classes just to have him again. Class is super easy and highly informative. Lots of reading. Hope you like talking, but don't worry if you're a quiet person.
He is a great teacher but the essays are confusing since he is not clear on what he wants, but he is willing to explain if you email him.
In-class lectures are a bit dry, but he is willing to help if you talk to him.
Patrick Williams is a great professor and he gives thoughtful feedback on assignments. Every week Patrick sends the class an email describing what the weeks is going to look like. He is very helpful and wants his students to succeed in class. There is also extra credit opportunities that arise throughout the term.
There were two main essays that were allowed to be retaken at the end of the term as well as a mid term and final with weekly discussions. Don't disregard discussions as they relate to weekly reading goals
This professor has to have things his way. He demands that all assignments be submitted in a specific manner with specific formatting. This would be fine except the requirements for the essays are neither MLA nor APA which makes it difficult. The extra and specific requirements may be helpful to some but it just added extra hurdles for me to jump.
In the Spring COVID term, Patrick was my only prof I could actually communicate with in any way. Online classes aren't my thing, but he did provide a great study guide for exams, which was good for non-book learners.
Run. Run as fast as you can. This guy doesn't answer emails, and doesn't grade projects in a timely manner. Frankly, he should be fired.
Such an awesome class taught by a genuinely thoughtful person. He exhibits awareness of students as "whole people", passion in his discussion of philosophical topics, as well as general interest in human connection via conversation, music, and coffee. The best teachers are those who speak to life outside of the class, and he is definitely one.
Patrick is a thoughtful professor, and very much encourages discussion. He will respond to your emails, and he will make time for you if you want to go the extra mile. His lectures are dry, the best parts of the class were the class discussions. What he wants for the essays is unclear, but you get a chance to revise and talk with him about them.
His lectures are insightful, and he ensures that every student gets a chance to talk. However, there are some difficulties in his class too. There is a lot of reading from the textbook. Also, he is a harsh grader. You want to follow the outline exactly or you will see your grade tank. The tests are easy, as they are multiple-choice. Good luck!
really easy and smooth online course
Patrick is pretty awesome. He is a fair grader and is online class is easy to navigate and his due dates are reasonable. I would take him for every class if I could!
This professor was excellent, I was going through some pretty traumatic family things, and he was willing to help me get back on track. He also checked in on me to see how I was and if I needed anything or how he could be of any help. I am not usually one to take completely remote classes, but this was an excellent experience for me.
Very engaging, awesome use of content, never too much work- and the study guide he gave for the only tests were every single question actually ON the test- and where we could find it in the textbook. 15/5 would recommend.
If you're looking for engagement or feedback, this likely isn't your guy. The textbook is horribly written, for one. Secondly, not a single assignment had been graded still at week seven. He's great at responding to emails and seems like a nice enough guy, but this class felt like a waste of my money.
Teachers email communication is GREAT! The book was exceptionally dry, religion can be a very fun topic, not the case here. He doesn't grade often or timely. Discussion posts between classmates were less friendly due to insistence on word doc submissions which require downloading and are less likely to make people want to engage with each other.
I loved his way of teaching and this was the second time I had him as a professor so I already knew a little on what to expect.
This guy frustrates me to no end. I do not understand his "format" requirements for writing an essay or discussion posts. He's too lazy to actually read and grade papers so he instead decides to hurt our grade for writing a paper with the correct format. Possibly the worst teacher I've had in any course.
Teacher requires everyone use word documents for discussion posts, which clogs my computer full of other people's word documents just trying to find someone to reply too. Doesn't give real feedback on essays. I can follow instructions to the letter and still be scored low on something. This class almost killed my interest in the subject of religion
Proffessor mainly communicates through email, which I didn't mind. And answered my questions in a timely manner. The hw mainly consisted of discussion posts related to the reading. There were 2 exams, for which he gave reviews for. As well as 2 essays. Overall, this class was enjoyable and insightful.
I wouldn't recommend taking classes with this professor if you like having your assignments graded fast. He likes his assignments turned in on time, and I bopeelive it should be recipricol and we should receive our grades withintime a proper time. Not weeks later. He gives good feedback whenever he decides to grade your assignment.
The class consists of discussions based on our readings from the textbook and there where 2 exams and 2 essays. The course material was very interesting and the professor was easy to contact.
After the end of this semester, I can say he was a good professor and gave good feedback. My only cons for him are that he takes a long time to grade assignments and the finals and midterms are timed. Personally, 30 minutes is not enough for me, and if they weren't timed I could have gotten a better score.
The online class is dependent on reading, discussion boards (with an initial post, and then 2 response posts), papers (2 of them, 1 is a personal perspective), and 2 exams (a midterm and final). Patrick is good at responding to emails, so ask all the questions needed. Exams had clear study guides with page numbers; papers had rubrics and examples.
The class was overall easy, you'll do weekly discussions about the reading. The midterm/final is short and the reviews for them led you right to the answer. There are also two essays! My only reasons for a 3/5 rating are that your coursework is never close to being graded on time and you have to submit Microsoft Word documents for discussions.
Patrick is incredibly nice and friendly. Classes are best taken online since the classes are based around talking face to face with others. People are confused about the essay formats but they are actually pretty simple.Patrick is great at responding to emails and meeting outside of class. He encourages class discussion and has a great class feel.
Funny and interesting. Midterm and final is very easy. He encourages you to have your own opinions and to speak what is on your mind. This is not a class where the teacher reads off slides while you take notes. This class involves reading the material and forming your own ideas and coming to class. This seems tough but its easier than most classes.
First off, take this class in-person. It is set up to have face to face conversations in groups and with the class. In the online class, the conversation happens in discussion boards, which feels tedious and does not offer the same feeling. This class is great and Patrick is really a great professor if the class is taken in the right way.
Lots of reading due before the next class (took me hours), 2 essays and completing the daily worksheet. Your grade only depends on the essays, participation, and 2 tests (midterm/ final). He does give out a study guide for the tests. Overall, not the best/not the worst; would take again if I didn't have a full class schedule.
I took PHL 206 with Patrick during spring 2024 term. This was a great class, very interesting and engaging to hear other people's perspectives. A good amount of reading is required, just don't wait till the last minute to complete it and you will be fine. Also be sure to bring your books to every class. Read, show up, participate, and you will pass.
I am still shocked he has a high rating. Slow grader, had nothing graded by week 8 other than 2 discussions. Will dock points and not tell you why which helps no one improve. Our class was nothing but reading, student discussions, and tests. Unnecessarily convoluted instructions for assignments that have you screaming. Felt like I learned nothing.
Not too difficult of a class, you are required to have discussions every week about the material covered, and respond to your classmates discussions. His classes are way better in person, take this class in person if you have the option to. My advice to future students is to start chipping away at the essays asap, the due dates come quick.
Class was relatively easy. Every week he would assign a discussion post along with two quizzes and two essays throughout the term. He is an honest grader and would always be happy to respond to any emails. He also would let us resubmit our essays after he graded them to make up points.
The professor has a specific teaching system, but if you engage with it, the class can be manageable. The textbook is not the best, but study tools like Unstuck AI can help with prep. Attend lectures, complete assignments on time, and you'll do well.
Great professor. Just read the required readings and participate in class.
SO MUCH READING. I wanted to take more philosophy but I had to take a new professor to continue taking this study as his choice of textbook was very long and very dry. I also felt like there were a few things in the textbook that felt bias. He is a nice guy but didn't enjoy the class.
I loved taking this course, Mr. Williams posted a reflection question for each week's readings, you are to respond with an in depth answer, the class is built to make you think. He posted 2 essay papers for 2,000-2,500 words, which is easier than it looks. As long as you read the text and have good responses (fulfill the requirements) you'll pass.
Very nice and respectful of student's ideas. Just engage with the class and it will be good. Must take this class in person though.
He was extremely helpful and kind when I had any issues or questions. You could tell that he cared about his students and the subject matter. The class is not an easy A, you have to put in a bit of work, but he offers help and if you pay attention and ask for help when you need it you can do it! I would happily take another course with him.
Encourages you to think critically, grades fair, . Had 2 papers, but ample time given in the term. Great class, I'd say it's an easy hard class. Only take this if you want to read and actually open up in discussions. You have to put on the work. I emailed him and got quick responses several times and got additional feedback about a paper for edits.
Loved the class and enjoyed the workload, but the teacher himself was difficult to work with and passive-aggressive.
Great professor and a great class. He seems to care a lot about what students have to say, and is great at communication whether it'd be in person or over email. There are two mandatory essays, both of which are very easy if you've previously taken AP Lang or College Writing in high school. Overall, easy A and fun class.
Really enjoyed his class. He's passionate about the subject and values student input. The two required essays are manageable if you start early. Midterm and final are multiple choice, and the provided review makes both exams straightforward if you follow it.
Patrick challenged me. This course ended up being my most time consuming for the term. If you are looking for an easy pass with little effort, he's not your guy. Prepare to really reveal yourself in your discussion posts and essays as he requires depth and expansion on all thoughts and ideas. He requires that you spill personal opinions.
This instructor places heavy emphasis on exact formatting and enforces requirements very strictly. Essays may receive zero credit for formatting issues, and while revisions are allowed, correcting those issues does not always result in full formatting credit. Exams are straightforward and closely aligned with the study guide
