Not a bad class, but I felt it was too shallow. Basically a review of high school anatomy.
This class is for students who have never had biology before. (Like me) Patrick is very helpful and tells you exactly what you need to know for tests. Read the book, read your notes, and review the homework before exams and you will pass the class.
Pat is awesome and he gives you very clear notes. All you have to do is the assignments and keep up on studyin and you have a guaranteed A. Can't wait to take him again!
He is so awesome. He has NO quizes and does not count off for late work. Everyone needs to take him!!! You will get an A... I promise!!!!
He must have changed his style because he's not easy. There are lab quizzes every week and lecture exams that are monstrously difficult. Questions are tricky and cover a scope WAY beyond a 100-level class. There's too wide a gap between his easygoing lecture style and the hellish exams he gives out. However, I don't think he cares.
LOL. I agree with the latest poster, he MUST have chnaged his teaching style. He is a very polite man and his lectures ARE easy going but those weekly lab tests are NOTHING TO MESS WITH. His exams are more intricately detailed than a handwoven persian rug. The number of people who get an A in this class NOW are few and far between.
He is a nice guy. His midterm is not easy but make sure if you really understand his notes and go over his outline.
Great teacher! What you really need to know he will tell you clearly and have you write notes on. His tests are indepth but all of the information is right out of your notes. Take advantage of his example tests!! They help more than you know
I have my 4 year degree and I found Pat to be one of the best instructors I have ever had. He is extremely clear in his lectures, helpful, very organized, answers questions in and out of class and gives you sample tests to look at. His midterms and final are hard. Need to know at least 2 layers in order to answer most test questions.
Pat is a great teacher. His lectures are very laid back and almost everything on the tests are in the lecture notes. His exams are hard, but as long as you study his practice exams you should do fairly well.
Pat is a wonderful teacher! I have learned a lot from him this term and cant wait to learn more in BI122. He keeps his lectures interesting and is very clear with the information. His test are difficult but, just like every one says as long as you study hard and take notes you will get a good grade.
Pat is the most organized and kind professor I've ever had! He wants you to understnd and learn. His tests are off HW and his powerpoints/handouts. He is always available to talk and answer questions. His exams arent handsdown easy, but if you study hard from his powerpoints/HW/handouts you should do very well. Wish I could have Pat for BI 231/232.
Exellent teacher. The only thing about his class that i didnt like was some of the questions on the tests were irrelevant to the material studied...
Pat is a great teacher! His lectures are great. Some of the questions on his tests were hard because of the wording. Study everything from the powerpoints and homework!
Pat is a tough teacher, but if you study all the powerpoints and go over your notes, he covers everything he tests on pretty thoroughly. He is also very willing to answer questions in and out of class.
I usually never take the time to rate my professors but Pat is such an amazing teacher that I had too! He is very clear on what he wants from his students and yes its hard but if you study the power points and go to his class you will get an A. TAKE HIM!!!
Pat is well organized and clear about what he wants you to learn. His tests are based off of his HW and Power Points, if you use these as your studies aids then you can guarentee yourself a good grade. Lectures are not mandatory by he does in class activites that are worth points and you don't want to miss out on easy points. Good Luck!
Pat is a great proffesor! You will need to review your notes and the slides (posted online) from the class after each lab/lec to keep the ideas and concepts fresh in your mind. There are detailed lab quizzes every week and the mid terms require a good understanding of the material covered during the course with the final exam combining questions from the two midterms and some new material. Pat is a very friendly guy who gives clear instructions and help to those who need it. Highly recommended!
He's a great guy, friendly and helpful if you ask him. I'll say this though, the material covered in his courses is extensive and it's a big mistake if you think you can just come to class and expect to be prepared for the exams. His tests are VERY difficult. Interesting, helpful, and nice, but he is one of the most challenging professors I've had.
Really enjoyed his class. The great thing about him is he tests from the notes he gives in class. He refers to the books for the ueful stuff and lets you know when you should just ignore the in depth detail of the book. He posts really helpful learning objectives and study guides. He is willing to help and very nice.
there is alot of information to remember in this course and Pat was really good at letting us know what we needed to know for the tests. He is a great teacher, a nice person and can tell he enjoys teaching.Funny too.
What a breath of fresh air after taking Cell Bio, I thought I would never learn this stuff until I took Pat's class. He uses illustrations, and helpful ways to teach A&P. If you want him to know/like you throughout the term, ask questions and engage in the class. He's runs a great classroom.
Zwartjes is an awesome professor. Explains anatomy/biology concepts well--even to non-science types. LOVE his power-points and lecture style. excellent teacher. BEWARE: I took the lab with another teacher (Baggia) and she was terrible. take this course (lecture AND lab) with Zwartjes ONLY. Otherwise you are shooting yourself in the foot!!!
This is the second term I've taken from Pat. Excellent professor, VERY clear expectations. You will literally know from day one exactly what you will do the whole term. His labs/lectures are fantastic, his sense of humor and interest in A&P invigorating at 8am on a Mon morning. He is very fair, but DO expect to put some work in to this course
Pat is awesome. His priority is for everyone to be successful and he'll repeat himself or say things differently until everyone gets it. He tests on his power points so instead of memorizing the entire book you just need to pay attention in class and review what he posts online. I wish he was doing A&P next term!
Pat is GREAT!!! He teaches so well and answers every question, holds study groups prior to exams and is so clear on what he teaches. His midterms and final exams are a real pain so do study. He is a great guy, and wonderful instructor. I wish I could have taken all my science classes with him. Highly recommend him, you won't regret it!
Pat is a really smart guy who definitely knows his stuff, but 212 is HARD, and he doesn't go out of his way to make it easier. Not always fair when it comes to grading, I had to work way harder than I thought I should have had to in order to get an A. Would recommend him, but be ready to work for your grade.
Pat is a great teacher. Didn't really need the book, since he quizzes and tests 100% from the slides, but you still have to buy it. Study his slides consistently each day, and you'll do fine. He also provides extra credit. Also had him for lab, and he was excellent there too. I recommend him and wish he was teaching A&P.
Great teacher; organized and with clear objectives.
I took Intro to Human Anatomy & Physiology (BI 121) with Patrick and he is an awesome teacher. His lectures are by PowerPoints, and he posts them online. 99% of the questions on testsquizzes will be on info on the Powerpoints, so just study those and you are golden. Its a hard class but patrick is always willing to help.
Does a great job with presenting material in class. Objectives clear. If it is covered in class.... it's on the test. Patient and supportive. Wants students to do well. Highly recommend taking his lab as well.
Study from his slides from lecture and you will get an "A."He makes the material interesting and easy to learn. He is always there for extra help if you needed it. If you can take him for lecture and lab do so! He's an amazing professor and take him if you can.
His tests and quizzes are based solely off of his lecture slides. If you study those you should do okay. He made himself available before class and setup a class review session before each exam. There were times I asked him questions and he just got frustrated therefore, I stopped asking. I plan on retaking this class but with another instructor.
Pat is a laid back, funny professor who really cares about his students. This class is hard, but he makes the material easy to understand with concise explanations, detailed study guides, and total willingness to help outside of class. He is organized and wondeful; I would take him for every bio class if I could!
Easy tests, very clear on what it the questions are asking. Not too much material to know and he is helpful
One of my favorite professors at PCC. It is a difficult course but he helps make the material understandable. If you must take this course take it from him.
Pat works to make sure everyone understands the material before going forward. Even if you have a question after we've moved on, he is happy to stop and answer it before continuing on again. He makes every effort to make sure we're all on the same page and no on is left behind - you just have to ask the question if you have one.
Best and nicest professor ever! He's organized, he wants everyone to do well, and he makes a hard class into an easy one (but still, you need to study!). He always makes sure to check up on everyone to make sure they understand.
Pat was a good teacher and always tries to help you understand the material. I wish he would help you understand what he is talking about more. He's a professor who really knows his stuff and gets really excited about it when he gives his lecture, but I feel like I wish he would make things relate to the outside world more. I recommend Pat for 112
HARD class but Pat makes it doable. Quizzes/Exams based 100% on lecture. Test/quizzes are heavy on drawing pics/recognizing formulas! Textbook use is limited. Few extra credit chances so TAKE THEM WHEN YOU CAN. Homeworkeasy points. Seek him out when you are struggling. STUDY HARD! Nice guy. Straight forward. Clear grading. Gives study guides.
Fantastic teacher! He was very patient, easy to approach, and organized. You have to work for an A, because A&P is not an easy subject. He explains things nicely, and provides activities that help you learn the material.
Very organized, caring, and easy to approach. You can meet with him outside of class if you need. He is very patient and answers questions. He wants to make sure you understand. A lot of homework, but all useful in learning the material.
Be ready to work your butt off . Do not take a heavy load with this class you will need hours a week dedicated just to this class if you want to pass. Lectures are boring but does post up slides that help a little. Its a tough class be prepared for hard content.
Dont take anything else with this class as youll need hours to study for it. Hes an ok guy, seems nice but crams in way too much every week that I have to teach a lot to myself because I just cant focus... the lectures will put you to sleep. If you ask a question he wont really answer it, so thats not helpful. You probably wont get an A.
Best Professor ever! Take any class you can from Pat. He answers questions, lectures are interesting, makes sure class understands before moving on, holds study sessions, is funny, study guides are good if you do them you will do well in the class. Not an easy class, but Pat is you best option to take it with. Go out of your way to take it with him
Pat was a great teacher! His lecturing was fabulous and enjoyable! He is definitely tough and a tough grader. But he cares and wants you to success. You just need to seek out the help from him. I would take his class again for sure!
Pat is an excellent teacher! He clearly knows his stuff and makes sure everyone understands the material. He gives clear objectives and vocabulary for each chapter and tells you exactly what will be on the exam. He answers emails quickly and makes time for students outside of class. I really appreciated having him for Cell Biology!
Patrick has amazing lectures that keep you engaged the whole time. there is a bit of homework but as long as you try to do it he gives full credit. Very caring and always goes above and beyond when answering questions and grading work. not much reading from the textbook, he also has very good study guides and outlines for exams.
Really know's what he's doing and cares about his students. Awesome guy all around. Do the work and you'll be fine.
Pat was a good teacher if you can give this class 100% of your time. His lectures are not super entertaining as he has a monotone voice. He tends to go out of his way to nitpick the grading on every assignment you do. His exams are hard and not entirely relative to lecture. If you are anything but a student I don't recommend Pat.
Patrick is a great teacher who holds study sessions and gives you a clear understanding of what is or is not on the exam. I learned a lot from him and if I had the option, I would take my other classes with him.
do not take!! Hes horrible
If this is your first time taking a biology course at PCC or 1st time in a few years taking a bio course I wouldn't recommend him bc he rushes through lectures, is a tough grader, and has a monotone voice. He doesn't even bother going over previous exams/quizzes as a class and expects you to know so much in such a little amount of time.
Yes you have to put in the study time to do well in this class, but its also a class that has you in awe most of the time with all the cool stuff you learn. Patrick is VERY organzied so you will always know when something is do which is nice, and I always felt like he was a fair grader. His exams are based on powerpoints and a vocab list.
No matter whatever others said about him! Go take his class. He is a really caring person. He open an extra class for those who needs help even he did not get pay for those hours. I have no problem with his voice since its really clear and easy to understand. I love his class. Wanna take more classes with him but he doesnt teach 231.
You have to put WORK in in this class! Tests are on the hard side, you have to really know your stuff which means going over the lecture slides over and over and over (trust me do this and you should be fine). He is super kind and willing to help and I think the harder difficulty is worth it because I learned SO MUCH. Very organized and clear also.
I really enjoyed taking Pat's class. There is a lot to memorize and it can be tough at times, but if you take the time to study and make it to lecture you will pass. This is by far my favorite class that I've taking since I have been in college. Pat really knows his stuff and you will be blown away with some of the stuff you learn in his class!
He goes through a lot through one lecture, and really fast. His tests are really hard if you don't understand Bio at all. Sometimes he gives some extra credit to raise your grade.
Lecture: 3Exam(150pt each) 3Major HW(20pt) 10Prep HW(10pt) 6Journals(10pt) Lab: Quiz(20pt each), PreLab(10pt) & Lab(5pt) due every lab. Poster Project(90pt) Total: 1000pt He's a clear, organized, reasonable but strict instructor who enjoys teaching Miss due date? No exceptions Lots of memorization! Bio beginners beware 2 Textbooks $$cheaper online
THIS AIN'T IT. Very hard for me. It is NOT a beginners class, it is practically a 200 level class. He gave us stats on grades and 10% of students who take the class get an A. You must study hard and not miss class (does not allow makeups for weekly quizzes and hw). Content feels rushed and expect something to be due basically every lecture/lab.
Mr. Pat is a very nice guy, really passionate about the subject he teaches and is really flexible. He offers some extra credits, especially if you need it. He does do study guides but beware. If this is your first time taking bio in a long time, do not take this class. Although study guides were provided, not really that helpful on quizzes/exam
He was a great professor! His syllabus was very clear on how much each assignments and exams were worth. I also loved how he allowed students to basically revise their FIRST exam for 30% of the grade back. Everything that was on the lecture was on the exam, no surprises on the exams. Patrick himself was great at explaining the materials and patient
If you show up and read the lab manual and pay attention, you'll do fine in this lab. Expectations were very clear from the beginning. The weekly quizzes prepared me well for the final lab practical exam. Do not miss a week of this class or else you'll fail.
REMOTE LEARNING!! Mr. Patrick was incredible during this term. He was available by email and during class hours. He was really understanding and helped out a lot. I would recommend using the lectures for exams since that is where all the information is coming from! Remember the examples and diagrams. Correct terminology is very important!!
Lots of homework/quizzes, hosts optional (heavy) lectures but important to attend to pass this class. Super tough grader, takes off points for even things not mentioned in class often. He is organized and quizzes from his lecture material only. Lab work is stressful but passable with tutoring and carefully reading instructions. Sometimes gives EC.
I really hated this class. First, the lab kit was very expensive, and the company that made didn't even put some of the required materials you need for those labs. Second, it was very frustrating to do the labs alone every week without any help. And lastly, the Professor that's SUPPOSED to help you, only replies after a couple of days.
Expects you to come to class with no questions and gets mad when you do ask questions because you are wasting time. Instead of helping you he gets mad for not knowing the material and expects you to learn it on your own even though the whole class is struggling with the same thing. Also says that almost everyone doesn't pass. ( gez I wonder why)
REMOTE LEARNING! Patrick is a pretty good teacher who is available to help you outside of class. Content wise, his lectures are definitely heavy, but that's simply because BI 112 isn't an easy class if you don't put in the effort. It was a bit hard to establish a teacher-student connection with him, but that's probably because of remote learning.
He was so bad, I wanted to give him a zero, but that's not possible so, I gave him a 1.
Very knowledgeable teacher, but expects a great deal in a short period of time. Long exams without enough time. Most exams and quizzes are not multiple questions, but fill in the words. Very good at providing a lot of resources and options for study. Quite an abundance actually. Overall, he doesn't allow late submissions.
He is interesting and fair. He provides plenty of materials to prepare you for the tests. Study and listen to his lectures and you will do fine.
I have a feeling most of the reviews that are negative are due to the difficulty of the class. However, Pat gives students ample of materials and opportunities to be involved and clearly states that this course isn't easy. This class is a preparation for a healthcare occupation... it shouldn't be a breeze. He will prepare you for other classes!
I really enjoyed having Pat as a professor. This is an intense class, with a lot of information so be prepared but Pat gives you everything you need, you just have to put in the work. Tests are tedious, and lab quizzes are hard. I was able to reach him very easily when needed, and he was accommodating. Would take again.
One of my favorite professors I've had. Really nice and funny dude who just loves biology. Lectures moved at a perfect pace, material was all online to access any time, lots of study material provided, clear expectations for grading and due dates. Didn't try too hard in any areas. Feels like he really has mastered how to teach effectively. 10/10
If you are willing to put in the effort to learn, Pat's class is absolutely awesome. If you aren't, Pat is still awesome. He is very accomodating, hilarious, explains the material in lecture exceedingly well, is a great lab instructor, and is all-around a great guy. We called him Pat the G.O.A.T. in our study group. Absolutely would take again!
Pat will set you up to succeed more than most bio profs. He gives digestible lectures, provides study guides that you can complete directly from the powerpoint, gives many reminders of what is due, is responsive via email. His tests are hard and don't expect to get credit for incorrect answers. I seriously would take him for every class if I could!
Patrick is a great guy, the type you would want to get a beer with later. He actually gives me English teacher vibes considering how down to earth he is. He is very personal and easy to understand. The only struggle here is the actual material and the amount of material you need to cram. This goes for any Biology class, you'll need a good professor
I love Pat but not as a teacher if you have learning disabilities. I submitted a disability accommodation agreement and he was so clueless on what to do. I think I just needed some extra support and that was lacking. Some people may thrive in his class but I did not as a neurodivergent person. He's VERY nice, and personable in any other situation.
Super chill dude, but be prepared. His teaching methods are a bit dated and the amount of work assigned makes this class very difficult to stay afloat with. I struggled to keep up with assignments along with my other classes, but after tears, sweat, and a lot of anxiety, I managed to pull through and pass his class with a B
This class is VERY demanding. His grading is the toughest I've ever come across in my entire college experience. Be SPECIFIC on tests and assignments, or he will deduct points. Do not miss class, no quiz retakes allowed..Lab is an ENTIRE week behind lecture. Lab and lecture did not click together for me personally. He is nice tho. READ TEXTBOOK!
Pat is nice person but not super helpful outside of class. His lectures mostly contain him reading off his slides. It was very difficult to maintain the information with it just being read once and moving on. The class is test heavy and if you do not do good on exams it can be hard to maintain a good grade.
I had Pat in for Cell Bio (lecture), and thought he was super engaged in the material, very thorough and knowledgeable. He is a bit of a stickler in grading, taking half points here and there for little things, so you do have to be on top of it. Would definitely take again!
Pat is a nice professor but he does read off his lectures that he had. His grading on homework, lab and projects are though. exams, lecture quiz are based on the lecture notes but lab quizzes are based on the previous lab plus the one that you're going to do that day.
The course was test and lecture heavy with frequent homework. I maintained an A most of the term, but emergency surgery affected my finals. The instructor was not accommodating, and my grade dropped. Even with preparation, the tests were difficult, and many students struggled. Along with having 2-4 homework assignments a week.
If you are a disciplined student you will do fine. This class will require a lot of study time and you will want to be specific and thorough when answering questions on work. The material is challenging, but he obviously wants to see his students succeed.
