He is ridiculous, he ridicules the kids in his class is unclear on what he wants out of you. Makes the students feel akward for answering a question wrong, the only way to speak to him is make fun of him directly or be sarcastic. Overall, really bad tchr!!
I think Acosta is a good professor but is faulted in his delivery to the students. He often seems to come off a little harsh, but I don't think his intention is to harrass his students. Consistantly doing the assignments and participating seems to get you on his good side.
typical English class. Expects a lot from students, but lenient. Has a weird sense of humor. Very Smart and informative. I learned how to write better essays and it takes me a shorter time to write one than compared to that before i took his class. It gets boring though.
Professor Acosta is a great educator, who is intelligent and fair. In order to do well, participate in class, and he doesn't badger you if you don't get an answer right... all of his questions are open ended.. i would recommend him to any student.
Very smart but needs work on people skills and how to get the class involved with the material. The class would never answer any of the questions he asked. Really boring.
Worst most boring class ever. I am an English major and have taken many English Classes before and this was by far the worst one in history. Acosta is a horrible teacher. I should have dropped it when I had the chance.
He is the most boring and horrible professor ever. Do not take him, he will embarrass you in front of the class by reading your essays out-loud. Makes class a nightmare.
Unorganized and rude
You will learn a lot from this class if you take it seriously. The people complaining about him are probably just angry because they didn't do the reading assignments and were thus unprepared. He has a different teaching style, but I learned a lot about argument/writing essays in your class. Do the work and participate and you will be fine.
Very intelligent, but a bit wry in presentation style. He should be prouder of his jokes instead of downplaying them. Should repeat and inflect questions to get attention of students to answer instead of staring waiting for an answer. Fair assignments with leanient but constructive grading.
awesome teacher
Difficult... VERY
he's a very smart person, but myself and many others in the class had a very hard time understanding exactly what it was that he wanted from us on our essays, and all recieved poor grades because of it. He's explaintions are to complicated and hard to understand.
He is a very difficult teacher...on essays no one has yet received an A..we get ecstatic if we're lucky enough to even get a B on an essay. Sometimes, we wonder if he hates our generation...he's known for saying "What do you guys do all day???"
Horrible!!! Don't take him!!! Don't waste your time!!!
i dont know if it is him or the course. But the material i learned in his class was the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of the material in 101. He grades soooo hard on essays and stares at the class until he gets an answer for a question. It's boring and he tries too hard to be funny. But he does a have a hotttt g/f. I'll give him props for that.
This guy is horrible! He basically takes everything you know and throws in out the window. He grades hard and lectures while passing back and forth. He is the only teacher that I have ever gotten a B from. I would never ever recommend him!!!!!!!!!! If you registered for him get out while you can...
if ur interested in learning and up for a challenge that will benefit not only ur education, but ur abiltity to apply what u've learned to ur life/future then u'll c why he's such a great teacher.he'll challenge u and lead the way to imprvmnt, he means what he says, his words are worthwhile, and he is funny, by the way. best teacher, not easiest
Definintely has a different teaching style. Doesn't give a lot of structure to essays or assignments. He provokes very interesting and intelligent discussion. I really enjoy the class even though it is at 8a.m. I recommend the class as long as you are willing to work and think critically.
he was the worst instructor i've ever had! He was so unclear and did not explain what he wanted from us very well, as a result many of us failed the class.
Thanks for everything Mr.Acosta, thanks for all you've taught me, you've had a significant impact on me.
get out fast! do not take this guy! he is the worst instructor ever! i've even heard bad things about him from other instructors on campus.
For all those that claim he's a terrible teacher...it's just because he actually expected something from you huh? Acosta is snarky, intelligent, dorky, and fun. He challenges students and is willing to give any help asked for. Don't waste his time if you don't want to learn.
get out fast! he is the worst teacher ever! he makes you feel stupid and never quite answers answer your questions. he is just not helpful.
He is a very good teacher, but he grades way too-hard. I have learned to write well in his class, but he gives you way too much homework. He lectures in class about stupid information, however, he does have a weird sense of humor that makes the class interesting!
Mr Acosta is like a fine wine . . . old, tart, and full of grapes.
Okay so seriously this guy is a really good teacher. He tells you the first day of class that if you are looking for an easy class to basically just leave, he isn't kidding. You learn a lot from him and I would definitely take his class over again. If you do what he asks, you should be fine.
I thought he was terrible. Hard to get an A.
He is rude and thinks he's so smart. He is not helpful has no respect for students. He makes his work extremely hard. He tears up your essays. I got an A in English 101 and I know how to write a kick ass essay, but he thinks no one can write as good as him so he fails everyone. You can't answer his questions unless you have the right answer.
hardd teacher
Not sure about his other classes but his 091 class is great. He makes it perfectly clear that if you are looking for an easy class then you will fail and should drop. His explanations of material is excellent and has a sense of humor. I'd recommend his 091 class if you want to learn how to write.
Difficult;hard to impress, but very good teacher. Does not let anyone settle for anything less than their absolute best.
Horrible teacher. Makes everyone feel stupid. Class was so boring. There were a lot of essays and he was a hard grader. Dont take him if you can help it.
i hate him, don't take him, annoying, rude, thinks hes so much better than everyone, doesnt accept anything if its not the way he does it. NEVER take him!!
Makes you understand how to write better. Just don't suck and do all the papers and you do fine. Don't even need to do all the reading logs or do that great on the quizzes. Just do the papers
Although I am an straight-A student of reasonable intelligence, this man spoke over my head with the most ridiculous level of vocabulary I ever heard, and spoke to students in a derogatory, demeaning way. When my dad died he insisted If I left town for the funeral I still had to turn in a paper (the day of the funeral)so I dropped the class.
I couldn't stand him!!! He is so arrogant and tries to make everyone feel like idiots. He is useless as far as help is concerned, he had me going in circles and after I followed him in those circles he still had the nerve to give me a bad grade. Every english class I've had since then I've done well so I know it wasn't my writing.DO NOT TAKE HIM!
He teaches college people; he taught for a college level. If you do the work asked of you, you'll be fine. He likes when students put a lot of thought and effort into a thesis or idea/opinion about what the literature is saying to the reader. If you do that, you're golden.
I miss the guy. Sure he was impossible to impress and is pretty arrogant, but you do learn to be serious about how you write and I bet you'll be a better writer when you get out. If you are planning on transfering, 091 doesn't count towards your gpa so all those people complaining they didn't get an A are just whining for no reason. He's funny!
He scares everyone on the first week of class. If you can give an effort, you will pass the class. Not a bad class though if you like playing HangMan and talking about the Simpsons.
He's pretty funny, chill,
I struggled to get a good grade in this class mostly because he didn't explain what he wanted from the us. He would return essays with bad grades and wouldn't give much reason why. I always dreaded going to this class.
This professor was probably the most dullest human being to surface this planet. His lectures are very dry and he thinks a bit too much of himself. He does have valid comments in his grading, but he tends to grade fairly hard. If you do take the class, try to consider it as constructive critisism.
Horrible teacher, never explained anything when it came to writing essays. Enjoyed belittling almost everyone. Not a nice person, and clearly he thinks he is better then the world.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! Not helpful at all. Rudest teacher I ever met. When it came to the day essays were due he would literally throw them back at you for having something wrong. When he would check your drafts he would say minor comments that needed to be done to your essay and then you would turn the final draft in and receive C or D.
Not that bad. At first i thought this class would be terrible, but as long as you do your work with some effort it is a fine class. He does love his own thoughts so try to do exactly as he says on papers.
he sucks big time he's like the english police, he will put you down if your wrong and he just sucks!
i took this teacher for english 101 and he is very strict on margins and format for the paper. warning: if you work at walmart or own a ford, you will be made fun of the entire semester. i dont recommend this teacher for students who struggle with english courses. if you are great at english then take him. if not, then dont!
Hard grader. The class was funny until you got your papers back. Overall a professional teacher which expects college level work and will teach you to read critically and improve your writing.
If you don't want to do the work I don't suggest you take him. He's actually rather nice in his own way. One of the smartest profs at coc.. so... he can be pretty intimidating.
DONT TAKE HIM! sure he knows what he's talking about but i could not receive an A to save my life!!I am a pretty good student and work hard. i slaved over papers and only received C's. If you enjoy getting C's and D's then take him.
I took his class a couple semesters ago and had to comment on my experience with Professor Acosta. I recieved an A in his class and absolutely loved it. He is a brilliant professor and actually a really cool guy. If you are a serious student and enjoy learning you would be missing out if you didnt take his class.
Arrogant, Cocky, but nonetheless a genius. Hilarious sense of humor, but some may find it very odd. I would only recommend him if you are truly interested in the subject, not if you want an easy A for a general ed req to transfer.
Extremely intelligent professor. However, he expects his students to demonstrate intelligence on his level. Textbook usage is minimal. His rants about society being incompetent are entertaining and make class pass relatively fast. Difficult to get an A in the class but evidently possible.
Paul Acosta is intelligent, compassionate and obviously a professional. The point of an English class is to better oneself and one's ability to speak and write coherently. All this Professor does is try to teach this to his students. By the way, he's not rude at all. Actually he's really nice and if you can't understand him, read more books.
Amazing professor. He's really nice and probably the king of the cute intellectual types.
Do not take this teacher unless you can write a flawless essay.
on the first day of class last fall he came across as an evil little man who's mission in life was solely to give every student an F! However, he is not as he appears. He is very bright, and he knows it, which forces him to bestow traits of arrogance. His arrogance, in turn, allows him to joke around with students. He was an OK teacher.
This professor has a poor attitude and doesn't mind putting students down in front of the class. Is very difficult to get along with.
Great teacher if you are looking to learn something and not simply receive an easy A. Moderately difficult, but worth my time. He is hilarious and makes the class fun. Attendance is pretty much mandatory because if you do not show up on a day when an essay is due then you automatically fail the class, no joke.
Great professor that loves his job. Going into the class the first day i thought that he was going to be horrible. I ended up really liking his class. By far the class that i have learned the most from. He knows what he wants, so make sure you don't give half effort on your paper because he will not accept it. Work hard and he will pass you.
This teacher is very strict on his papers and since this is the only thing we do in the entire class, if you are not flawless at writing essays, you will fail. We started out the semester with 31 students and ended it with 10. He is rude and puts people down. Also, i did not learn a thing.
Intimidating at first, very smart individual and does challenge his students to think beyond a mediocre level. His humor is dry but can be funny.. essays are tough because a lot of the time the subject matter can be ambiguous. Hard grader on essays.
Likes to digress from the teaching roll in order to voice his own opinion on certain matters during class at which point he will unalterably say "... but i digress", friggin character this guy if you like that type of person.. about half way through the class he started enforcing rediculous rules on the class maintaining that if you were tardy for
This is one Professor who really cares about his job. He was born to teach. He makes the class enjoyable, but expects the work to get done. Try your best and ask him if you need help.
I loved this teacher!!! Honestly at first I was kind of nervous about him , came off a little mean but then he became my favorite English teacher ever :) he grades hard on his papers but he makes you a better writer by the end of the class, great professor definitely recommend him!
Bring a stapler. I had so much fun in this class. Everyday we had an intelligent conversation. Hard grader. Will take him again, given the chance.
Acosta is a difficult professor, but he is definitely very interesting. He is sarcastic and really knows what he is talking about. Remember to bring a stapler, seriously. He teaches you things that are interesting and his class discussions are really interesting.
This is honestly the first english class that I really felt like I learned from. He is a great teacher and genuinely cares about his students. Follow directions and don't make excuses and you will get along just fine. Would absolutely take his class again!
One of the best professors I have ever had. You actually learn useful stuff in his class and he really does care about his students. He has a unique personality that you either love or hate.
Best English professor I've had in college. He can be pretty intimidating, but you gotta give the guy props for never running out of interesting things to say. Take his class, you won't regret it.
This professor is absolutely brilliant intellectually and arrogant because of it, but he doesn't realize how much he influences us, and so he makes fun of us. Joke back with him - he loves it and he just gets funnier. Extremely helpful, taught me so much about life. Insightful, will tell you exactly how you "failed him". Thank you Professor Acosta
I loved him!!!! At first I was very intimidated by him but as the semester went on things got much better. I actually learned in his class and he is the most sarcastic person you will ever meet but hilarious at the same time! He loos like the guy from 'Honey I Shrunk the Kids'. I recommend him. Great class Mr. Acosta!
So on the first day you will want to drop his class. I'm not saying you should though. He is a very intelligent teacher and you will learn but he is arrogant. Joke with him and you will enjoy the class. Only used two books throughout the semester. Not an easy class but it can be rewarding.
He is difficult and unfair.his arrogance due to his intelligence makes him one of the worst teachers He grades unfairly with no rubric for essays or small papers He discourages participation by degrading student's opinions. His long and tedious prompts are most likely his opportunity to show off his arrogance at the expense of his class
He's a really hard grader and if you don't pay attention or have a perfect essay good luck getting a high grade. I'm usually a straight A person and even though i put everything I had i still was struggling. He paces a lot and is sarcastic but that was the only thing that made the class bar able.
Very hard grader and very confusing because he expects you to know what he wants for an assignment. Very sarcastic and mean, discourages you from participating because he makes fun of whatever you say. Didn't learn anything and the class felt eternal. DO NOT recommend would not take him again for sure!
Professor Acosta is incredibly brilliant. Yes, he may dislike people and seem as though he is a professional at sarcasm, but he truly means well. My thought process has grown tremendously because I took his 103 class. He makes you a solid critical thinker and as long as you show progress, he will give you the grade you deserve. Fair indeed.
I thoroughly enjoyed his class and found his sense of humor to be interesting and hilarious. His lectures were challenging but they truly made you think about the material and life in a new way overall. Thinking critically is key and he teaches you how to do that.
His is very smart, knows what he is talking about. His class will definitely widen you horizon and bring you to conclusions you wouldn't have gotten by yourself. Yet in all honestly he is hard. Prepare to be challenged in his class. if critiquing is not your strong point you be behind and have to work at it. If your looking to coast he's not it.
His sense of humor is dry, but I found him hilarious. First day of class he will scare you, but he really is the best English professor I've had so far. The class is very difficult if you slack off, but if you keep up with the reading and pay attention during lectures on essay structure, you will succeed no doubt. I loved his class!! Stick with it!
I was upset that Acosta did not give me an A when I was off by 2 points. However, looking back I realize just how much I learned from him. Now at a top school in California, I take pride in knowing that I can write better than many other students here. Take his class, you will learn a lot, and be sure to be "more specific" in your thesis )
He has an extremely dry sense of humor. Sometimes it was funny, sometimes it was annoying. Make sure to do your reading otherwise it'll be a long class for you. Papers are easy to do as long as you take good notes in class. He can seem very rude and intimidating but he really does want the best for his students. He is always there to help you.
He forces you to step away from the traditional ways of writing, such as using an outline or sticking to a five paragraph set up. His class is challenging but doable. The lectures can be dry but his humor makes it easier and he overall makes you think about society differently.
This guy treats community college so seriously like it's Harvard! He's just mad that he couldn't get a job as a real professor so he treats students like future failures who "aren't worth his time". He'll make you simultaneously read between 4 books and assign 50 pages worth of writing over the whole course of the semester. Bad Prof Bad Person NO!
3 essays, 5 news analyses, and a book review. + 2 days worth of final exams. If ur really PC or conservative, ur gonna get made fun of. If u really wanna learn critical thinking + have fun, take Acosta!! Crass humor, but totally hilarious and light hearted. If u need help with papers, HE IS THERE FOR U JUST ASK. Participate in lectures + READ!
I liked his teaching style. Hard grader but wants students to learn & evolve in writing. There were 4 essays, weekly reading logs, some random writing assignments and an 8-10 pg research paper AND Final exam. I will take him for Critical Thinking. He never fakes a "Sarcasm". BE PREPARED TO LEARN! Also be prepared to write a "confession of failure"
DONT TAKE HIM. I PERSONALLY CANNOT STAND THIS TEACHER. I see how he treats everyone in my class and he is plain rude. he does not care about helping or your future at all. I just got diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes and i asked to sit in the front because of my high blood sugars since i cant see well in the back of the classroom & he said FLAT OUT NO
He is a tough grader but all for the wrong reasons. I do not know how he graded other students in the class but in my situation, the last 2 papers he graded I got the exact same numerical score. He does not have a rubric and he just gives whatever he wants. He is smart, I do not doubt that. As a teacher, stay away if you want an organized one.
If you're looking for a professor who is not rude and not a tough grader for wrong reasons, then take this guy.
I have no idea why I took his class. One word to describe this professor: arrogant.
He'a an intelligent and funny professor. He can be harsh at times but that's just how it is. In fact, his harshness made me a better writer. If you have a question about the assignments, you can always approach him and he'll do his best to help you out. Just show up, participate, do the assignments (do your best), and submit them on time.
Don't take this professor. Trust me. I was always regarded as one of the best writers in High school. I took this professor and he just tore my essay apart. No rubric. No standard. No reason. I took the same essay to my former teacher and another professor and they said it was at the least a B paper, not a D paper. Do not take him.
Professor Acosta is one of the best English professors I've ever had. His class is not an easy A, but he will make you a good writer. If you like challenge, take him. If you like to just show up and pass, don't. He won't make it easy for you.
Good professor overall, made it fun by not always talking about English and relating it back to life right now. I think he has so many bad reviews because people are lazy. You DO GOT TO WORK FOR IT, it is sooo worth it and you'll end up becoming a great writer.
This was a difficult class to get through, but well worth it. Because he's such a tough grader, it made me a better writer. While his sense of humor can be seen as harsh, I always found him to be hilarious. I can't help but laugh at the comments of too many essays and things to read, because it's an English class; what do you expect?
I should have read reviews before taking him. I did not know about this website before, but I am so glad I found it.
I was not too fond of him in the beginning, but by the end of the semester I found him to be my favorite professor. Last semester was tough in my personal life but professor acosta was always very understanding and respectable towards my situation. He is a tough person to read but once you get to know him he is a hilarious and caring professor.
DOn't bother emailing him won't get back unit hours or days after. gives too much busy work that doesn't get graded and you won't get points for. can be rude and not helpful. I would not reccomend this man at all. I learned absolutely nothing in this class.
People will complain about Acosta because he does not cater to the lazy. The truth is, he made me a better writer. For that, I respect and appreciate him. He is also understanding, I had an incident towards the end of Fall20 and he was very caring. Super cool dude. Like everything else, apply yourself or complain like a baby and fail.
