I had Dr. Adl for both the lecture and the lab courses for Gen Chem I. He cares deeply about his students and is always available outside class for extra help. The tests are just like the reviews he posts on Angel. Do all of the assignments and you will do well. I highly recommend Dr. Adl and I would certainly take a course with him again
I have him as my lab teacher and i would not recommend him. He's not very helpful when doing assignments, and he rushes you out of class. He takes attendance everyday. The prelab quizzes aren't hard at all but the postlab quizzes are a little confusing
He has good intentions as a professor, but he can be very confusing during lecture. Genius chemist, but doesn't dumb it down to college level enough and rambles a lot. You have to make sure to study HARD for tests, he usually has to curve them because they can be so tough that most would fail.
Worst professor I ever had. Tried to give me a D when my grades clearly resembled a C. Even after he figured out I earned a C did not give me credit said he was "In Christmas Spirit" and felt like being nice. Cannot teach and yells at students for no reason. Tests and homework is hard. Don't ever take this professor!!!
Dr. Adl can be very confusing. I had him for Gen Chem II lab which shouldn't be a hard class. If he doesn't like you, you'll get a low grade. Also he yelled and the group next to mine for no reason at all. If you just go in, listen, don't talk, and get out, you'll do fine in his courses.
I had him for Chem 2 lab, not a difficult class by any means but he makes it excessively difficult and loves to hear himself talk (and yell) If you can take this class with ANY other lab prof, I definitely suggest it. One of the worst profs I've ever had and he loves to feel superior to his students and will scream at any trivial error.
Does not follow grading rubrics. Sometimes very hard to understand. Grades very unfairly. I am depressed I took this teacher for Chem lab. Some positive views include; being let out of class early and not hard to achieve a decent grade.
DO NOT!!!! I repeat DO NOT take this professor!! He is the absolute worst professor I have ever had and he is so mean! He doesn't understand how rude he is. He literally made me cry. Not helpful and not clear on directions.
Avoid this professor, he is a stickler, has a heavy accent, difficult to understand and he rarely understands you. He is a very tough grader, goes over reports and practicals with a fine tooth comb, will take points off for anything and everything. I am taking this class with Calculus, ANP, and CHM lecture, this lab was my only B thanks to him...
He is really rude and not understanding at all. He doesn't care and when you ask questions he makes you feel stupid like you're supposed to already know the information. The worst professor I have ever taken in my 3 years at FGCU
He grades very unfair and does not know what is he teaching. He always rushes students out of class even though they have questions.
Took him for Chem 1 and 2 labs and I think he shouldn't be allowed to teach. He wasn't approachable and had a problem controlling his anger sometimes. If he was in a bad mood, he'd take it out on students. He'd also take off points for irrational reasons but, ultimately, you can mostly figure out what he wants and get an A in both classes.
He was rude and got angry a lot. Seemed like he almost made one girl cry. Created a bad learning environment. His grading was sometimes unpredictable. You can mostly figure out what he wants, but overall a terrible experience.
This has to be the worst professor at FGCU. Takes points off for not capitalizing your name or attaching extra papers. Goes back on everything he says, even if it is written. Once you get through the first few labs you understand his ridiculous expectations, getting an A isn't hard if you pay attention to tiny details. My advice: get in & get out.
It's chemistry, cannot expect it to be easy. Very witty and can be rude, but hilarious for the most part. Wasn't too difficult to maintain a B. Just do well on the online quizzes and you'll be fine.
I wouldn't recommend him to anyone! Not helpful explaining the material, goes back on what he says, and is very rude. Even tho I got A's on both my midterm and the formal lab report, and ended the semester with over 89%, he didn't round me to an A. Worst professor I've ever had. PS: if you miss one lab, you already lose 10% of your grade
Do not take him! I have all A's in all my classes and this is my only B. His grading is always unpredictable. He will encourage questions during lab but then then call students out for "not listening". He is condescending and rude to his students. Most of the time, I had questions but was scared to ask him. He should not be teaching period.
Not a good teacher. Not a good grader either. Got a B but the quizzes are hard, the lab reports are not explained well at all, and would not recommend taking his class.
Professor Adl can be pretty rude. He is very particular about grading. He takes points off for the tiniest things. His tests are hard, but he does curve them. Just follow instructions, do the online quizzes, and do the lab work, and you'll do fine.
For the short reports, the grading wasn't always clear. He can be hard to understand sometimes, but overall if you try and follow instructions then you'll do fine.
knows his subject. Hard on safety violations. Helpful in lab and during office hours
Knowledgeable, connects to Real World applications, Sense of humor, tough garder, insists on good grammar
In any science class, applying yourself is very important. He's very knowledgeable and wants to help you any way that he can. His humor is dry sometimes but don't take it to heart! He does what he can to help you pass, and genuinely cares about you. He is one of the best professors I've had here.
Dr. Paul Adl is an amazing professor, and deserves more credit then given by others. He really does care for his students especially if you provide the respect back. There are times where he may seem tough regarding reports being turned in late, however, he is understanding. Dr. Paul has dry humor but don't take it serious.
He deserves way more recognition. He is sarcastic sometimes but it his hilarious! He makes class fun and it usually gets out early. He answers any and all questions and he's easily accessible outside of class. I definitely recommend taking him for chemistry. He is so very caring and knows a lot about the subject (which is always a plus)
Good professor for chem lab. Just follow the rubric for the reports and you will do fine. Very funny yet professional. Curves exams a little and happy to have taken him.
For the first reports the grading wasn't very clear, but if you ask him exactly what he wants he is more clear then. He cared about the students grades which is sometimes rare with college professors. He is a stickler for safety-dont let him see you with your goggles off. He is hilarious and was a kind professor.
I was ambivalent to take him because of these reviews but it was the only class left. I ended up really enjoying this class. He is very knowledgable about this subject. Don't take his sarcasm seriously.
Just an average professor that assigned work that all other classes got assigned. Knew his material, and funny.
Easy to talk to outside of class, but not easy to go to office hours. Emails back quickly. Cares about your grade. Cares about your safety. Very funny, sarcastic professor.
This is one of the harder labs that I have taken, but each professor has to teach the same material, give the same quizzes and same assignments. Whenever someone asks a question he didn't have 5 minutes to explain it, very to the point which made it easy to understand. Was a good professor all around and hilarious.
Theres only two exams like other lab classes. I am into chemistry so it wasn't very difficult to me. He cares about his students and wants us to learn. He is interested in his subject and you can tell that he wants to be there and loves his job.
not any more difficult than a regular science class. apply yourself and you will pass. curves exams yet sometimes nitpicks the reports down to grammar, and for one word being wrong. but overall one of the better professors i have had here. really wants you to pass, really caring. i havent had other chem lab teachers but i recommend this one.
Really into what he teaches and applies real life to chemistry which makes it interesting. the text book is not needed in this lab. the lab usually got out early and he was very quick about things. usually extends deadlines and emails back quickly. if you need help don't hesitate to ask him. apply yourself and you will pass for sure.
He is hilarious and knows what he is talking about. He likes to joke around but takes lab safety really seriously. dont drink or eat in the lab and wear your goggles. he can be hard to understand sometimes because he talks softly. i didnt think he was a hard grader and he doesnt show any favoritism. very professional and respectful professor
His grading wasn't always clear but he gave good feedback and was very hard on me, nothing terrible or amazing about him just had him for a semester. got in and out with a B.
I just took the course with professor Adl. I got an A. He is truly smart in chemistry. He is tough on safety and grammar. He always tries to match the work with examples in industry. He is hard grader and very picky with details. he tries to be funny but not in bad way.
Was understanding for late assignments. Go to office hours!
Professor Adl is brilliant! He explains everything pre-lab, send you equations you need, and helps you tremendously. I would recommend taking Professor Adl. You wont be disappointed :)
Professor Adl is an excellent teacher. Very thorough and explains the material in a understanding manner. Very caring, approachable and accommodating. He is always available to help you or answer any questions. Great experience. I would take his class again. I definitely recommend.
He is super!!
This professor always made sure I knew exactly what I was doing before an experiment. He went over expected results, what your calculations should look like, and wrote down exactly what you need for each short report plain and simple. When I asked a question he took me to the board right away and showed me step by step how to solve the problem.
I took Professor Adl's Chemistry I lab for summer 2018. He is a bit particular with reports, as he deducts points for minor mistakes. Despite this, he is very fair and tells you exactly what he expects from you and the assignments that you turn in. Be polite, pay attention, and ask questions and you'll be fine. Also, wear your PPE.
He is very hard to understand. He spends most of class explaining labs but we don't know what he is saying. If you miss 1 class you drop a letter grade. He does grade and answer emails quickly.
Acts like you should know everything and looks down on you when you don't. He is not very helpful. He is hard to understand and spends most of the lab lecturing about the how to do the lab even though it was required reading. Had to skip an immediate family member's funeral just to attend his class. Miss 1 class and drop a letter grade. Don't do it
Dr Adl is extremely accommodating and helps a lot with each lab!
I Would not recommend Adl, he is terrible at explaining things and isnt very helpful when you ask something regarding an assignment. He should not be teaching. If you do take him be sure to have all the assignments done exactly right, he will take points off for the smallest thing. And also be sure to remember to take all the quizzes.
I had him for Chem Lab, and he was really good at explaining each experiment. If you have any questions he's always available to help you. He's really strict with lab safety, so make sure you have your goggles and are dress accordingly. He's really understanding, but he can't hear that well so when he's doing attendance make sure to stay quiet.
He is an amazing professor. If you're having personal issues, he's VERY understanding & will work with you. He is very clear with his directions with labs & lab reports. If you don't understand material he will sit down & help you. He is extremely caring, empathetic, & funny. If you respect him, the respect is reciprocated. Workload is average.
excellent. always relates theory to real life applications. knows his stuff. tough on safety
wonderful; knows his chemistry and physics. tough on safety and pain on grammar
All you need to know is there's prelab quizzes(unlimited attempts) and post-lab quizzes. Short reports on each lab, he grades strictly and deducts for small things. 2 lab exams that are open notebook and easy as long as you keep up with it. Do well on the formal lab report, and exams and you won't fail
Professor Adl doesn't do a great job at explaining things and is unclear about grading. He deducts points for small things and is unclear for his reasoning behind them. His grading system does not apply to all students as he tends to give students different grades for the same quality of work. Overall, I do not recommend. Do better.
Prof Adl grades harshly but barely gives instruction. And if you ask a question or try to clarify, somehow he makes it more confusing. He seems like he knows a lot about the subject but cant seem to convey the information in a way that works for students. If you struggle w chem and need every possible point to pass like I do, dont take Prof Adl.
I had to take this lab class online due to the pandemic. He had a lecture portion each week, then the lab was done online. And a lot of the times during lecture when students had questions, his answer was you'll have to figure it out. It was a ton of work for only a few points.
The tags for ratemyproffesor are stuff like clear grading criteria and fair. he is the opposite! So rude and condescending! He will not answer you if you have a question and take points off if you get it wrong despite you trying to get it right and him not answering! Simply doesnt care
Unfortunately I had to take this class online because of COVID. He does a poor jabot explaining things clearly. I emailed him several times and asked for help, he wasn't much help. He didn't care and then he'd say I was doing the work right, but somehow he'd give me 50-60% on the work? He's very frustrating. Find a different professor for sure!
We do a lab, but he gives us his own data to upload and will take off points if it is not exactly as he wants it. Also, don't bother emailing him. If you email him with questions he will either a) ignore the question and tell you to basically figure it out, or b) leave you with even more questions. Overall, he is hard to reach and is a tough grader
Do not take this class! Dr. Adl is smart but does a poor job of communicating with his students. He deducts points for absolutely no reason and will have little explanation as to why. This class was disorganized and made unnecessarily hard.
This class wouldn't be hard if he was actually good at communicating what he is looking for in the assignments. His emails are so confusing and he doesn't really answer your questions if you email him. The in-person labs themselves are easy but his instructions are just so confusing and he doesn't teach any of the material on the quizzes.
Do not take this teacher. Not only are his emails very cryptic, when you email him questions he completely ignores them and makes you the bad guy. He also takes points off sometimes for the most random things (Like putting my name one time).
His reports are outrageously hard , he's very specific on data just pay attention in class and listen to what he says and you should pass but definently one of the hardest lab classes I have ever taken
He was horrible about pretty much everything. Any time i asked him for help, I was todl there was no confusion. I passed only becasue half the assignments get dropped. he told us day 1 that canvas was all messed up and due dates were wrong. Then we'd all miss something, and suddenly the due dates were right. Don't take him.
I took this section over summer, he's a nit picky grader with unclear expectations. He has trouble with technology which is difficult for a half-online class during covid. His email communications are generally succinct and unhelpful. But you'll understand what he expects from you by the last two labs (hopefully). Good Luck.
extremely knowledgeable,. uses applications in industry to show that the experiments are not just for theory. must prepare reports according to his guidelines
tough grader. he cares about your grades, but is firm, lectures and demonstrates experiment, answers questions. always has stories abut the use of the experiment in real world. i recommend him.
I had him for Summer B. Take it. He is awesome not in chemistry but physics too
I took the lab with professor Adl during Summer. He spends tome to explain the theory and demonstrates the experiment. He always has anecdotes from semiconductor manufacturing industry. He is great. I would take it gain
Some students criticize Dr Adl for being demanding and getting mean over safety. I think he is fantastic
I am taking the class this semester. So far has been an awesome experience. Dr Adl takes the time to connect the work to the outside world. He knows the chemistry and physics and demonstrates all the experiment
Professor Adl is very knowledgeable in his field, but I would not recommend this class. He talks very quietly so you cannot hear the end of his sentences. He does not lay out what he expects from you clearly. He does not respond to emails in full sentences. Lastly he snaps at his students and students are scared to ask questions.
be prepared to work hard. you will learn a lot. fantastic lecturer
Inconsiderate and rude to students. When discussing an issue, he rarely lets the student express their concerns and becomes stubborn, he's convinced he is always right. Extremely tough grader, will take off 20 points if you don't follow instructions as simple as writing a title. His instructions are often unclear and he gets frustrated easily.
I just tock the course this spring. He knows his stuff and always uses anecdotes to relay=te the work to industry. He is hard grader and expects a lot. If you are brave try him. You will learn a lot
Took him for Chem I Lab in spring 2022. He is a tough, but solid instructor. A lot of reviews state he's rude, but he has to be considering the lab rules. Biggest assignment was a scientific report, which he slowly introduces you into, making it easier. Practically guides you through the labs, just pay close attention and you'll pass.
Incredibly tough grader that gives very little leniency with lab reports and projects. Rude towards students and unconcise during explanations of class material. Grammar in emails is very poor and is generally very hard to reach outside of class. He also often scolds students during class.
The labs are not long at all. For labs with repetitive procedures, he'll give you data to use instead of wasting time. No one ever had to stay the full class time. Dr. Adl gave a super specific grading criteria for reports and explains in class exactly what he wants. Don't use canvas rubric. He is a very sharp minded and traditional professor.
He sends a ton of vague emails that he expects you to understand. He also never uses the grading scales on canvas and he goes by how he feels. Two people can submit the same lab data and one gets a 90 the other gets a 60
Really struggled to communicate grading criteria and seemed like things were graded at random.
Terrible Canvas page. Disrespectful and misogynistic. Calls out students for asking questions in emails. Extremely unprofessional.
Please do NOT take his class. He throws tantrums in class if you don't follow directions cause "he's repeated himself multiple times" when he only says it once. Canvas & the rubric will say one thing, but he'll say another in class & get upset when you do it the canvas way because it is "wrong" but refuses to fix it because he doesn't understand it
Avoid him at all costs. please. he should not be teaching, like at all. when you do something wrong and you try to express your side, he cuts you off and condescends you. please don't take his class, it'll be best for your GPA and your mental sanity.
me and a couple others had to withdraw from this class, he is very unreasonable, any time anyone tries to ask him a question regarding a deadline or an assignment, he gets angry and says to look at the syllabus. He is very unorganized, and very controlling of variables that should not matter at all. He is very aggressive and rude. Please avoid him.
I've never had a professor mock me until I met professor Adl! Openly degraded students for simple mistakes and provided very little explanation for experiments and discussion questions. Impossible to meet with outside of class and responds to emails late and incomprehensibly. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
please take my word and do not take him. incredibly rude and whispers so the class can't hear him lol
AVOID THIS PROF. had mental breakdowns. had to put so much of extra effort to complete the content. TOO MUCH BUSY WORK. lab quizzes are gruesome. lab report guidelines were useless and vague. made asking questions such a daunting & brutal task. spazzed on u when u wanted clarification. very stubborn. save the stress & headache, choose someone else.
DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!! Save your money and your mental wellbeing PLEASE. His expectations and instructions make no sense. Very hard to email him any questions because he is very vague and short, and are left with even more questions. He expects the class to know things, but degrades us if we don't know it. Its a hostile and uncomfortable environment.
RUN!!! I have never met a more disrespectful professor in my whole life. His grading criteria is so unclear that it is nearly impossible to do good on anything. He picks on every little thing you do and is unreasonably rude about it. His instructions are hardly english and it has nothing to do with a language barrier, but its ALWAYS your fault.
Listen to the other reviews. He is a terrible professor. He follows his own instructions, will not give clear feedback or instructions on how to write lab reports that need to be done his own way. A lab report you should get an A will be a D. I wasn't gonna write anything bad about him, as I liked him as a person. But his grading is absurd.
Dr. Adl is a nice guy and very smart, but like many others have mentioned, his grading system is completely arbitrary. He uses his own guidelines for lab reports which he then completely ignores and gives you whatever grade he feels like. It genuinely feels completely random. He is also quick to put down/ berate students. Avoid at all costs.
Unreasonably rude to students and clearly has no desire to be teaching. Grading is completely random, as he does not use a rubric but his own guidelines, which are incredibly vague. Gets mad when students don't answer questions but berates/mocks students that get answers wrong. Gets very hostile when asked about a grades and calls students liars.
Will yell at you, degrade you for basic misunderstandings, make zero exceptions for late work and remind you that it is
He can be very demeaning towards people, berating people for forgetting things or misunderstanding something. He refuses to use the mic in the room, and speaks very quietly, so you have to sit in the front to even get a chance to hear. He never responds to your emails on time, and then gets upset about it. Doesn't grade consistently.
Dont take this professor! He is completely inaudible and unclear. His canvas is confusing and often has conflicting instructions. You will be humbled and humiliated in front of everyone. My peers and I often got stuck by his unclear directions. He has an assistant who is also condescending and rude, but she's your only chance at guidance during lab
Very rude professor. Told students that “they wouldn't make it in life” when they asked a question he considered bad. Unnecessarily harsh on grading lab reports. Very unprofessional in emails.
Best to avoid this professor if possible. They have a strict, unforgiving grading system with vague instructions that can lead to random, unfair grades. Though smart, they can be disrespectful and unhelpful when students struggle. unstuck ai could be a lifesaver for study prep.
Take him if you want to end up in a mental hospital, because that's what happened to me. He refused to explain anything and would chastise the whole class if someone didn't understand. Incredibly rude and doesn't care at all. He doesn't even follow his own rubrics when grading and if you try to tell him he will scream at you in front of everyone.
