Great Prof, Made History of Europe Very Interesting, his lecture on Sports and the Cold War was a classic for Canadian Hockey Fans!
Awesome prof, very helpful, funny, interesting, fair marker, very clear speaker!
Pretty good orator, and I enjoy this class. Pretty damn good considering I take it at 8 in the morning. Straight forward, funny, and willing to answer all questions.
He's so funny, and he has the best useless info...like cannibalistic rats...and mercury cures...:D...keeps me awake even tho its bloody early in the morning at the crack of dawn
This guys knows his material. Keeps the lectures very interesting and answers all questions students may have. One of the best profs I've had in university.
Awesome prof! Answers any and all questions - very knowledgable. He makes stuff that you have learnt 100 times interesting and adds a new twist!
By far the best history professor I have seen at this university so far. Very approachable and willing to answer all questions. Excellent speaker, very interesting lectures.Great presentation of material. Very fair marker. Awesome job!
this is one of teh only classes that I could possibly take at nine AM, it's just that good. he knows his stuff, he presents it well, and it's interesting. it's detailed really well for a class with such a broad topic. I would highly recommend this professor!
Chastko is an excellent prof, very interesting and entertaining.
a VERY VERY good lecturer, though I found the assignments a little tough to get a good grade on
FABULOUS professor!! He made EVERYTHING interesting, even if it wasn't. I'm in my fourth year at UofC and this is the first class that I ever hated skipping because it was so great! Nice man, fair marker, and definitely knows his stuff!!
Definately the best prof I've had in 3 years. I actually looked forward to going to his lectures - very interesting and never boring.
Loved the class. He was very good at getting the material across in an interesting way. You can tell he enjoys what he does. The only problem I have with him is that he likes Eric Lindros. But that's just personal opinion.
BEST PROF EVER!!!! Knows his stuff, expresses it well, never laughed so much in a class before in my life. So far I've taken 201, 361, 333 and 381 with him and I can't wait till he teaches something else so I can relive the good times. If he doesn't get tenure then there is no justice in the world!
Awesome guy. You can tell he loves what he does...used humour sooooo well. Very touching guy...I cried in class. Excited to take 383 with him. PS: he had the hottest ta in life for that class
Good instructor with solid knowledge. Exams are marked fairly, as is the essay. Paul is a great speaker who really gets students wrappped up in the material. I highly recommend!
By far and large one of my favorite profs. His knowledge of the subject is remarkable and his lectures are fused with his witty humour and jokes. Dr. Chastko has a storyteller's gift and his lectures are never boring, rather captivating and very informative. He's very nice, approachable and always has time for questions in class.
Chastko is humorous, friendly, and approachable but professional in lectures. he's incredibly accomodating and supportive. gives fair grades with good feedback. 'I think it's safe to say' this guy is rad.
Who knew European history could be entertaining? Only this guy would use hockey to explain the cold war. Easy marker. Great/smart/funny teacher!
He'e a great prof who really knows his stuff. It seemed that you could ask him a question about anything and he would know the answer. However, a lot of information is presented to you each class so be prepared! If you take this class look forward to the Audio Video Extravaganza near the end of the session.
Reccomended, especially if you have a strength in writing or are an auditory learner. If you take good notes, you can spit them out into an essay on the midterm/final and get an A out of it. But you HAVE to go to class and write constantly, as the Powerpoints he puts on Blackboard are just an outline for the lecture and he talks continuously.
I think this guy likes the sound of his own voice! None stop talk for 75 minutes straight. This is my first history class and I am really surprised by all the high ratings. It must be that the history department is lacking if this is the best they got. However, Chastko is very approachable, but I just don't like his teaching style.
Classes are entertaining, Attendance is pretty much manditory, and a strong arm to write down as many notes as possible. Slides on Blackboard are just a broad stroke of what is covered during class, text books were completely useless. Use lots of detail in your Midterms/Final essays and you will do fine.
Dr. Chastko's class was pretty good for a first year course. His lectures can be a bit monotonous at times, but they can also be very engaging and thought provoking, depending on the topic, I suppose. The course is straight forward, the exams and assignments are easy if you put effort into reading and thinking and everything is graded fairly.
I enjoyed his class. The exams were not difficult and the class notes were clear. He does like to talk a lot, but I did not find that I took a lot of notes. Read the assigned novel and you will do fine!
Great professor, take as many classes with him as possible, especially if you are interested in anything to do with American history, history of warfare, contemporary world history, and/or the Vietnam War.
excellent
Excellent overall prof. Cheerful and positive despite students' apathy. Genuinely interested in helping you learn. Always answered questions in a thoughtful manner. Fair and accommodating to individual circumstances. Not advisable to miss any lectures if you want to do well on exams. Dr. Chastko also has a great sense of humour.
Dr. Chastko is awsome! He makes the course material interesting, he is actually funny, and he really does care about you learning. He does everything possible to help you out. We all developed crushes on him, not for his body but for his personality and mind. Chastko is one of the best profs I've ever had!
I really liked this prof. He looks like a big teddy bear and is so sweet. Knows how to teach, and if you study his lecture notes, you'll get a good grade. He's very approchable!
course was history of north american oil. great class, enjoyable considering the subject matter and despite being a morning class held in the summer. Dr. Chastko is great: very helpful, clear in his teaching, and personable!
Dr Chastko does know practically everything there is to know about history. Be aware that he will stand there for the entire class and read his written lecture notes. You will learn a lot in this class. My only problem is that he has taken a very long time to mark everything.
The best proff in this department!!!! Very enjoyable class and the reason that he marks long is because he teaches many clases that require 10-15 page papers so what do you expect? He's only human! And he is very leniant on extensions and deferals!! So if you are sick, dont worry about it, you can write your midterm a week later!!!
Best History Prof I've ever had. Period. Knows his stuff down cold, just go to class and you'll be fine.
Dr.Chastko is a great prof. This course was a lot of work, with a heavy reading component. He graded the course fairly, you just had to work hard which is understandable. I'd strongly recommend him for all IR majors needing to take this course!

One of my favorite history profs. In this war and society class he did an excellent job of keeping the class interesting and informative. His exams / midterms were very fair. The research essay was graded a little harder than I hoped but overall I really enjoyed the class and his teaching style.
Going to this class in the morning was like watching a straight gangster movie about warfare. These lectures are captivating. Very interesting but you will have to attend every lecture to do well on the tests.
Dr. Chastko is a very good prof. His lectures are very interesting and captivating. He makes you want to go to class and learn. Even at 3 on Friday you look forward to going. You have to attend every class to do well, as he only posts skeleton notes. I definitively recommend this prof!!
Great prof. Material is very clear and his lectures are riveting. Some of the stuff can be dry, but overall a great prof.
Despite that I get the growing feeling that the man personally dislikes me, he is a great lecturer, a fair marker, and overall someone who you can learn a great deal from. Make sure you attend class, and take CAREFUL notes, as even the obvious hints he gives won't prepare you for all his tests' complexities.
Nice guy, good professor. Take good notes, because everything he says is important to the midterm and final. Textbook use was somewhat important.
He is hilarious for one! If you enjoy getting in depth and really studying a subject he is the prof for you! Must do all the readings as he grades his papers for specifics. He is definitely fair though! Will grudgingly give extentions.
As good as leading seminar discussion as he is at lecturing; most seminars were stimulating and amusing. The exam structure of this section was innovative, having a presentation and 4 smaller papers instead of One Big Paper for the semester. The fourth and final course I've taken with the man is the best so far; I highly recommend him.
He loves oil. The oil class was great, he is funny and has tons of stories and jokes about oil. He is very helpful and a very fair marker, if you put time into your assignments, your grade will reflect it. He looks for quite a bit on the exams but provides you with the questions before so that you can prepare. Also, takes notes as the powerpoints aren't thorough
This is the only class this term that I did not get an A/A- in. Instead I got a C+! The lectures were very interesting, but the tests seem unrelated! A good strategy for his classes would be to do a lot of research about things that he hints will be on the test. Lecture attendance and textbook readings alone aren't enough to get a good grade.
This guy's fantastic, I have him for a 9 AM class and I actually look forward to getting up and going to hear him lecture. Absolutely no interest in history of warfare before this class, took it because a friend was in it, but he's by far my favorite prof. Really funny, intelligent and fair - presents the material in interesting ways.
Given his wife just had a baby, he seemed less than interested in helping his students learn. His slides weren't very helpful. I went to class and still couldn't use them to study for the final. His textbooks were pretty bad and he requires you read them for the exams. He also NEVER answers emails, which is very frustrating. But, entertaining.
He is very long-winded but can be funny. He is not very helpful in terms of providing guidelines for assignments. He and his co-professor (Baron) take FOREVER to return assignments, and when they do, they don't even appear to be read...there is just a grade on them. Very disappointed in this prof. I don't recommend him.
Great class! Class is co-taught with Dr. Barron so there is a difference between the two lecture styles. Be prepared to read! Found them to be both very approachable. Slow at returning assignments but the best part of the class is the simulation.
Took HTST491.01 and 491.02 with him...both were fairly difficult but loved the class. Had 2 other classes on the same day but really the only one I really cared about going to was 491...lots of reading in his classes but he is a fair marker and has no problem giving extensions or helping you out when you are stuck on an essay topic or reseach
Tips that will save your life in this class: 1) only use the textbook when looking for more detailed examples when he releases essay questions for exams. 2) RECORD HIS LECUTRES via an audio device, it will SAVE you when studying for exams, his powerpoint slides ARE NOT ENOUGH. Hard marker on essays, even in spring session.
chastko is great! he marks fair and his lectures are organized, clear, and interesting. my only criticisms are that he tends to talk a bit fast so you really need to pay extra close attention to catch everything he's saying, and he doesn't always hand stuff back very quickly.
Dr Chastko is one of my favorite lecturers at U of C. He is really chill when he's lecturing, but if you pay attention, you'll do just fine. Make sure for the simulation to ask questions before you submit your character outline, because otherwise, what he wants may not be totally clear.
Go to class and listen. Powerpoint notes useless but everything he says is useful and simple to understand. Text book doesnt actually cover course material, only useful for midterm/essay examples. Very good prof.
Dr. Chastko is a charismatic and great lecturer, unfortunately he doesn't often finish his lectures, his textbooks were virtually useless, and he marked really hard. I won't take another class with him.
Great Proff!!! He made an extremely detailed course fun and easy. Just go to all his classes and take good notes and you will do really well in his class. He gives potential questions for exam and picks certain questions out of the list. Assignment is long but the TA is very helpful.
Dr. Chastko is a fascinating prof. His lectures are interesting and engaging. Class attendance is mandatory, as the entire basis of the class is based almost solely on lectures, and the powerpoint slides and textbooks are pretty much useless. Take a class with him if you can!!!
He is a good lecturer and I actually wanted to go to his class. The only problem with him was that he answered no e-mails from me all semester, I had to visit him in office hours for anything.
This Prof is a disappointment. Although he knows his stuff very well, he seems to be somewhat neglectful as an instructor. He does not answer emails, his support material is not updated (therefore useless). Of concern because he is the director of the I.R. program. His lectures can be entertaining though!
Great Prof. Really enthusiastic about what he teaches and super knowledgeable. You have to go to all of the lectures and take notes because they are really important. Book review only 750 words and tests he gave the possible ?s beforehand this year! Highly recommend
Awesome Prof! Very intelligent and gives great lectures. I highly reccommend his class!
Best teacher ever! I was ready for him teaching the class, and it ended up being divided with this other lady teacher who was not as good. Kind of disappointing, but hey, what can you do. Take the class with him!
I understand this prof is good in his discipline, but he was terrible in SOSC 201, brutal class, no structure, assignments and tests had no guidelines and he NEVER responds to email to clarify what you need to do or know, do not take for SOSC 201
Engaging lecturer, uses ppts properly (doesn't just read off the slide). Can be a little disorganized. He was teaching four courses this term and I was in two (HTST 307, being the other, which was not as engaging, though TA he had there was an even easier marker), and he can be slow getting back to you due to workload. Gives exam questions before
Chastko is very smart, and knows what he is talking about. He emphasizes over arching themes and concepts over details, which I found very enlightening. The reading can be a touch heavy, but he is a reasonable marker, and looks for quality over quantity. Great prof, highly recommended.
Lectures lack organization and does not support an overarching idea. Midterms are often the cause of carpal tunnel syndrome (5 short answers and 1 essay in 50 minutes). Lacks flexibility when it comes to referencing or citing sources. Employs quantity of words over quality of words. If taking classes, be prepared to sift through lecture notes
absolutely the best history prof... such a nice person overall!
Chastko is one of the best profs I have had at U of C. I find his lectures captivating and very clear. He is very approachable and encourages student questions. He has a vast knowledge of the subject and makes his lectures fun and engaging.
I highly recommend taking a class with him! He's very good at getting information across with enthusiasm and often makes connections to things we can relate to for better understanding on concepts. Extremely helpful as long as you put the effort into meeting with him.
Came into the class extremely enthused and excited. But, I found his lectures to be all over the place and difficult to follow, especially if you have a better understanding of things periodically. Very interesting, obvious he knows his stuff. But I would not recommend him if you expect higher than a B. And his paper is almost impossible.
Tough class, high expectations, but he teaches enthusiastically.
Excellent prof, interesting and very knowledgable about the subject matter. Only problem is that some of the material was not very clear, think that is more a problem with the complex and detailed subject matter than the prof. Overall, worthwhile taking courses from him.
Dr. Chastko is the best prof ever. You will learn so much from him. Regardless of how confusing the course can be at times, you will walk away knowing more about IR then you will ever need to know and it will be valuable later on down the line.
Very passionate about subject, lectures like he's telling a story. Uses powerpoints but they are really just a skeleton so class attendance is mandatory. Bit of a difficult marker.
Easily the worst professor I have had at U of C in the last three years. Lectures are all over the place, and difficult to follow. Exams are identification and essay questions, with the identification questions touched on in class briefly. Attendance is mandatory. Chastko is not easily approachable, would be a much better author than professor.
Not a fan of this class. I generally do well in history, but not with Chastko. For the written portion of the exams, he presented us with ~12 different options to prepare for, put 2-3 on the actual test, of which we had to answer 1. He marks incredibly hard and is not clear about his expectations. A terrible, disorganized, and unapproachable prof.
Very passionate about the subject but his lectures are a bit all over the place. His tests are fairly straight forward but will require additional research on the topics outside of the lectures and textbook.
Prof Chastko is an alright lecturer - he makes it interesting but his topics can tend to jump around and the ppw are not really too useful. Mandatory to go to class but he posts possible final questions online and getting a good mark isn't impossible. Know your stuff and attend class and you'll be fine.
Chastko is a great proffeser. Those who are complaining, more then likely did not attend class or take good notes. Do those things and study, you can get an A. Very well spoken, and keeps the material interesting throughout the semester.
Dr. Chastko is the most knowledgeable and helpful professor I have yet to encounter at the UofC. His lectures are interesting, and often include supplementary interesting facts and insights. Chastko continuously demonstrated outstanding dedication to the subject matter of this course, and was also lenient with assignment deadlines.
It was a lot of information that was never explained enough to provide help for exams or papers- you always had to do additional research. The extension on the paper is helpful, but the TA marked extremely hard... Overall not a bad prof or class, not recommended to take in spring or summer- be prepared to do a lot of work and not get a great grade
Professor Chastko is the epitome of "tough, yet fair". I have a strong interest in history, if you do as well, Chastko's classes are exactly what you should take. Although you should not expect an A, you will learn more about the world during a semester than most professors teach in a decade.
Professor Chastko is an extremely tough marker. Although harsh, Chastko is fair and is easily the most well-versed professor at the university in modern history. Although your marks will take a hit, you will learn an overwhelming amount from this professor.
Really helped me out when personal issues got in the way of my work. Class is very demanding, but not impossible. A good person as well as a good prof. 1010 would take another class with him, regardless of difficulty level.
Although it can be difficult to adjust to his lecturing style, Dr. Chastko has a wealth of knowledge and can actually make some decent jokes sometimes. He really shined through for me when I went to talk to him during office hours. He cares for his students and is willing to make arrangements with you. Work hard & doing well isn't impossible!
You are lucky to get the opportunity to be taught by Professor Chastiko. He is very helpful and his instructions for tests are very clear. He is so knowledgeable in all aspects of history! Great lecturer!
Dr. Chastko is great! He posts lecture notes online, BUT they are not the full notes, you will have to do research if you skip classes. I only attended maybe half the lectures and easily got a B. When you do go to class, he talks A LOT and often his words are way more beneficial then the slides. He gives anyone extenstions, you just have to ask him
Phenomenal professor. I will go out of my way to find a class taught by him again. Was the highlight of my semester. Very intriguing, highly intelligent in all rounds of history, very helpful and will give you an extension if you ask. 1010.
Really liked this class. It's for non history majors so it was easy to understand and not too difficult. There were no papers and the tests were marked pretty easily. Would definitely recommend.
Professor Chastko is a very enthusiastic lecturer and I thoroughly enjoyed taking his class, the textbook is unnecessary for his 200 class though. His midterms and exams are very clearcut.
The best prof. I have ever had! He makes lectures interesting and gives helpful hints of what to expect on your tests. He is also hilarious and actually cares about his students and wants them to succeed
This professor is flat out great. Occasional jokes, amazing lectures. Write everything down? Dates and people are important.
Though he strayed off the powerpoint notes and you have to pay attention to what he says, he is an excellent teacher and an amazing speaker. Emphasizes the history aspect and can be extremely detailed. Tough grader, but you learn from it. Excited to take another class with him!
Dr. Chastko is a phenomenal prof. His lectures are interesting, but a little unclear as he tends to mumble at the end of sentences and speaks rather quietly. He is always willing to help students and tests are marked fairly easily. His expectations were clear throughout the course and were met at the end. He was very respectful to all his students!
Dr Chastko is a good professor but be WARNED if you take his HTST 200 class in revolutions DONT buy the textbook, it was 90$ and i NEVER used it and the buyback at the bookstore is like 5$, he's understanding when it comes to grading but his criteria for what he wants is kind of ambiguous and doesn't give you much preparation for exams or midterms
Awesome professor! Very down to earth and understanding. No assignments, just midterms and a final. A great choice if you have a lot on your course load and you wanted something light. But still you gotta spend some time to study before the tests. On the side note, the textbook seemed unnecessary.
Dr. Chastko is awesome! He super passionate about what he teaches and he should be considering he's department head lol. I would recommend this class to any 1st year with even the slightest interest in History. Pretty easy. 2 midterms worth 35% and a final worth 30%. GO TO LECTURE!!!
I suffered from a concussion during that semester and was having a rough time following lectures, reading and taking tests within the allotted time. However, Dr. Chastko was more than understanding with my circumstance and allowed for extensions on papers as well as exceptional aid with my preparation for the midterm and final!!!!
This is the second class I've taken with Chastko and I was impressed yet again. He lectures freely so you have to pay attention, but his breadth of knowledge is so impressive. Attendance is absolutely mandatory, and you have to work to get a good grade. His TA does a majority of the marking, but he was so helpful with papers, so approachable.
Chastko is an intelligent instructor. However, his lectures are very confusing. It is very hard to pinpoint essence of lectures at times. Very helpful to students with disabilities and students from other departments. However, I wont recommend his class.
Dr. Chastko is seriously a great prof, he's very passionate about history. The only issue is, his ppts don't follow lectures, you have to listen and note down everything (laptop is greatly recommended). The midterm involves essay/short answer in short time, so be sure to memorize key dates/themes.
This guy is a gem. I am a science student but needed some GPA boosters! I personally do better on tests than assignments but his tests (2 MT, 1 F) were written (matching, short answer, long answer). BUT if you go to class, actually listen to him, use wiki to fill in the blanks; you WILL do well. Paul is a very smart guy and very approachable. A+
Dr. Chastko recognizes that HIST 200 is not for History majors. He made it clear that it is his goal to help us succeed. He gives half-marks and has a very clear and easy test format. He is a funny guy who genuinely wants his students to succeed.
Chastko obviously knows what he's talking about, but he is clueless on how to effectively communicate content. He mumbles quickly, doesn't repeat anything, difficult to follow, and none of his important points are on the powerpoint. The content isn't difficult, but it's unclear what the content is. Overall a very frustrating experience.
very funny and good at relating to the students
He has an encyclopedic knowledge of history and can pretty much answer any question you throw at him. His lectures are entertaining but there's a lot of information packed into a very short amount of space, making it so that you have to be continuously taking notes. Spacing out in that class is a bad idea. The text was useless, though.
Textbook is optional; only use if you miss the lectures and need context. You absolutely have to be present for lectures or you will fail the tests. Says he wants to help students succeed, but the tests are very hard and is marked even harder. Uploads notes on PowerPoint to D2L, but you NEED to be in class to catch the important points.
Paul Chatsko is the epitome of what it is to be a good professor. His passion and love for history oozes in the way he talks. An amazing lecturer who has a plethora of knowledge at his disposal. He is extremely kind. Attendance is mandatory if you want to ace the tests which should be expected.
Dr. Chastko is obviously very passionate about history, however when he says this class is an easy A, he's lying. You have to work extremely hard in this class in order to succeed. His lectures are very confusing and his tests are very hard and very very specific. Only take this class if you are willing to work hard and teach yourself.
A 200 level course and asks you to prepare for 9 essays, from which he will choose 2 questions and you will have to write 1, in addition to short answers included for the midterm. Lectures are also boring. Cried for an hour because of overwhelming stress. You couldn't have lowered it down to preparing for 5 essay questions huh?
Great professor, easy to talk to, but you have to do ALOT of preparing for the tests. Lectures can get boring with WAY too much detail, but the course is easy if you can pick out the main points. Textbook not really needed, but attendance is mandatory as he doesn't post much online. Would take him again though.
Take Chasko if you enjoy history. He's a great lecturer but you have to be interested in the material in order to absorb it. Tests are all written, and you get the questions to review in advance.
If you love history, then you will Chastko. However, BEWARE if you are taking a class with him for an elective, it might as well be a poli sci class, and he goes into so much detail without any way to reflect on stuff he just said. If you zone out for a minute in class, there's not any way to recover what you missed him saying.
My experience with Chastko was negative. I found his lectures difficult to follow, and they left me completely confused with what I was supposed to be learning. Both midterm and final were excessively difficult (study 10 essays, 4 show up, write 2 plus short answer). He also marks everything pretty hard. Definitely would not take again.
Chastko is a great lecturer, very approachable and accommodating for extensions etc. He posts slides but they are only useful if you go to class and take notes. Exams are essay format and fair if you have good notes and study hard.
He lectures a lo and you have to pay attention and write everything down he says. I found it difficult to follow.
I'm finding him very difficult to follow. I zoned out and there is no way to get his notes because many of his exam questions were based on his lectures and not the powerpoints. A hard class for an option
When you see him run. Mumbles quietly, doesnt repeat anything and very difficult to follow. Throw out the notes and the textbook before the test because the questions are extremely specific things he went over once very briefly in class. Have to be able to read his mind to answer question right. Questions are designed to trick you. Terrible.
Make sure you write notes and this class is the easiest piece of cake you'll take. Make sure you listen to what he says during lecture and write down all you can and internalize it. With minimal studying, I got 2 A's on both mid-term exams. GPA booster, highly recommend especially if you were good at social studies in high school.
He is very knowledgable and is able to answer most questions proficiently. Found it hard to follow lectures as the dates seemed to be be bouncing around. Tests are very specific. I felt like i had a great understanding after studying, but if you missed some specifics in his lectures - you were at a loss on the test. 3 Multiple choice tests
Multiple choice and fill in the blank tests only - sounds easy, but they're only on stuff from the lectures that isn't mentioned anywhere else. If you zone out for one second, you'll be lost. Make friends, make a study group to exchange notes. Remember specific people and situations, not overall concepts. Wouldn't recommend as an option.
Get ready to write a big term paper for the majority of the mark. He's good and knows his stuff very well but can be quiet sometimes, even with the microphones. His ppt slides aren't very useful, so skip class at your peril. If you're interested in history, I'd say he's a good prof to have.
Not an easy class. Written essay format midterm and final, plus a 12 page term paper. Marked the term papers very hard and gave pretty harsh feed back. Otherwise, this class is interesting and he is passionate and knows his stuff. Did not need the textbooks. Learned a lot.
I really enjoyed this class! Dr. Chastko is an amazing professor and he gives his lectures in a story-like type of format which I found really neat. The one issue I had with the class, is he makes it seem like an easy A, but it's not, you have to work at it.
Dr. Chatsko knew HIST 200 was a non-major course and he designed it like that. Very idiot proof. However, I felt that this made the course a little difficult, as the information relies primarily on him speaking. The lecture slides were not constructed very well, making studying with them difficult. Very nice and knowledgeable man, highly recommend
Respected: when he talks, everyone listens (even with +400 students in 1 room) Test material: somewhat from slides, but mostly from his story-esque lecture style... make sure you go to class to get the non-powerpoint material! He has some solid dad-jokes up his sleeve
Love this prof! He is very passionate about history and makes you want to listen! He posts slides but they are not as detailed as the lecture content. Make sure that you only take this course if you are interested in history, not just for an easy A.
Dr. Chastko seems really nice and I think he genuinely wants his students to do well AND enjoy class. If you attend lectures and put in the effort, you'll do very well. This is an easy class IF you put in some effort. I overestimated how easy this class would be and so didn't do as well as I should have... but if you study, I'm sure this is easy.
An easy option, that is what this class was supposed to be and I personally found that to be true. I didn't put tons of effort into studying and I found the exams (which is just fill in the blanks and multiple choice) to be fine. But be wary! His online notes only cover a portion of what is tested. Go to class and take notes during his long talks!!
Class is easy if you just read the slides. Topics are interesting and relevant. Chastko is nice, funny, and really passionate about the content.
3 tests based on 25 mc questions. Really easy class if you take notes word per word. Prof talks really fast and power point notes were condensed and lacked much detail. Skip the class and you'll miss 90% of the info. Had to do a lot of research on my own. He's a funny guy but if you're not a history nerd it gets really boring. Textbook was useless.
Best professor I've had and even worked one on one with me to improve my writing.
Dr. Chastko is a good professor. He does tend to ramble on during his lectures where he will also give important information that you need to know for the exams. So, in other words, attendance is pretty much mandatory if you want to succeed in the course and good note taking is important. Besides that, the course was easy and I have no complaints
Dr Chastko did a really good job with this course. Tests were non-cumulative, 15 mc questions & 10 fill in the blank questions (with a word box), making this a great option if you have a heavy workload. However, most of the material covered on tests were things he said during the lectures, so take notes on what he says and not just the slides.
Tests are everything, Curves test scores to make himself look better, you need to be a tryhard to get an A in the class, means A on every test, each test /25 so this means 22/25 on each, hard to achieve if you just taking this course for credits. test material usually too specific and not found in any other source, multiple choices very ambiguous.
Lectures are super interesting. Don't need the textbook as long as you show up to class and pay attention. Grading is based off of two midterms and a final, which have mc and long answer. Pay attention to details for the exams. Dates and names matter. Tough grader.
He is such a caring, funny prof. He is absolutely a tough grader of papers, however he provides lots of help if you go in and see him. Because the papers are handed in electronically, the feedback is minimal, but again you can go and see him in person. He is passionate about the civil war and i left knowing a lot about total vs limited war.
Great guy! Super nice really good lectures but, he is slightly boring. He also knows that most of us are not history majors so he only grades us on three tests with 20 questions each which is fine. But it is super specific and it really can drag your markdown if you even get one question wrong. Overall great guy.
Dr. Chastko is a skilled speaker who keeps things interesting at every point during his lectures. His lecture slides are only skeletons, so be prepared to write notes during the whole lecture. Chastko will give you an extension on your term paper if you need it. This took a lot of pressure off during crunch times in other classes.
Chastko is a saint!! I had some personal problems this past semester and he was so understanding and helpful! Legitimately one of, if not the best professor I've had over the past 4 years. I wish i could have taken more than 2 classes with him! 150% recommend! Plus his lectures are really interesting and engaging!
I really enjoyed this course. The prof understood that a lot of people in the class were only taking it as an elective and so he did not give us any homework and the exams were very easy. You still had to study to get a good grade, but I found that he was able to get the information across effectively and the powerpoints were a useful study tool.
Excellent lecturer, easy to follow and very willing to pause and answer questions. He tests solely on what he is TALKING about, not from his powerpoint slides. Therefore you MUST attend lectures. You really need to know your material since there's not many questions so getting just a few wrong meant 70's or 80's for your mark at the highest.
If you don't show up to lecture the posted slides online will be of no help you must go to class. He's a really nice guy but his lectures can be boring sometimes with lots and lots of information. His multiple choice tests are okay although if you don't study you probably won't do well.
He used multiple choice tests for the first time in spring - was a disaster. 3 exams at 25% each, 25 Qs on each exam. Little room for error. 2 open book quizzes (25%). Class average was so low at end of semester so he let us redo the quizzes. Test Qs were on vague comments he made in passing. Had to work 2-3x harder than usual to get an A.
Professor Chastko is generally very good. He is very intelligent, and I find his lectures enjoyable, and his grading standards clear and consistent.
Lectures contain way way waaaaay too much information and all of it matters for tests, too. Sometimes starts early and STILL lectures right until the end of class. Also gives out huge 30+ page readings for each chapter to go along with the textbook. That said, exams aren't too difficult. I still won't ever take a class with him again.
I met with the Prof after the first midterm and he just threw me the answer sheet and told me to ask him if I had any questions... (not my own test sheet, so I didn't even get to see what I did wrong) and he seemed pretty annoyed that I was even there. Don't take this class. It will plummet your grade.
Excellent professor. He is a very fair marker, and is knowledgeable in his field. Assigns interesting readings. Interesting, fair, and all around good person. While other professors have impossible expectations, Dr. Chastko is level headed. Best professor I've met in the department so far.
His lectures are interesting, but don't bother taking notes on the slides, just take notes on what he is saying. He lectures are a bit heavy, and I actually stopped showing up to them. His last section felt way too much like an economics class. That being said, the class is easy if you put a bit of work into it. Reading quizzes are dead easy.
Chastko is endearingly intelligent and I hardly ever fail to pay attention to him unless I got no sleep at all. He's very good at lecturing about history, and he's willing to answer questions that go more in depth without going beyond the scope of the course. Just pay attention to his lips rather than his Powerpoint slides.
Heavy information when it came to lectures and the way he talked was so boring.
Very helpful , inspiration for us, fun class
Great class, his lectures are honestly like a TV series sometimes with how entertaining they are. The tests are a bit tough as rather than straight memorization its applying what you have learned but they are all multiple choice anyways. The power point slides I wouldn't bother with since most of what is tested on is what he says.
Lectures can be tedious and monotonous if you are not interested in the material. Posts notes online, but if you want to do well you have to go to class. A lot of reading, but all of it is optional and supplementary. Chastko is one of the most helpful and caring profs in the department if you have questions or need help with research or writing.
class was an easy A and prof had good lectures
At the beginning of the semester he says he knows you have better things to do with your time, but then he tests on things he said quickly in class. When you ask him questions in class he does not know how to answer, and he also does not reply to email. Lectures are dry and boring, seems like he just wants to talk about history, not teach it.
Chastko is really kind and caring about his students and is always willing to offer outside help on papers, etc. His TAs this semester are AWFUL. They grade really unfairly and give little to no feedback, and are snarky and unapproachable outside class. The massive hubris of the TAs ruined this class for me, but Chastko himself is an excellent prof
Fantastic professor, the best I've had! He really knows his stuff and is able to craft good lectures. Several times throughout the semester he made the entire class laugh which is always nice. The work and the grading are fair and I highly RECOMMEND this prof.
Professor Chastko is a good teacher and he tries his best to make History as entertaining and interesting as possible. he has 2 midterms, 2 reading quizzes and a final, he gives you two attempts and if you fail the first one it gives you the answers so you can get 100% on the next attempt. overall this course is an easy A if you read and prepare
I studied hard and attended every class and always felt like I had to go above and beyond reasonable levels of work to understand the subject matter to the degree that i felt he wanted us to know it and still got the worst grade of my semester.
Lectures were hilarious, made it really easy to learn. He does sometimes talk faster than you can write, so beware of that. He also skips through slides really fast but he puts them on d2l
Lectures are good but are exam relevant; the slides he posts cover very little of what is tested. What sucks is that he will say something only once VERY quickly, and most of the times it will show up on the exam so you always have to pay attention in his class. The exams are fair in difficulty, and the two online quizzes are great grade boosters.
Chastko is a very nice professor who is occasionally funny. I found the topics in this course to be interesting but I was not a fan of his style of lectures. He would change slides too fast or forget to switch to the ones he was talking about. All of the good information comes from his speeches and its hard to keep your notes in order.
This was a great class! Since it was a seminar, there wasn't a whole lot of traditional 'lecturing,' but Dr Chastko did a good job of facilitating the discussions and answering questions. He was also really helpful outside of class- he gave a lot of useful feedback for my term paper and in-class presentation. Would definitely recommend this class.
There is alot of stuff that isn't on his power points and he talks about it in class so you might have to take notes on the specific stuff. But he is a fairly easy marker if you study the posted notes alongside additional notes you took in class you are headed for a good grade. Overall, he is a solid choice and would take him again!
He tries his best though to make history more fun to learn by throwing in examples and jokes. BUT avoid taking him. I expected it to be easier, but if you aren't willing to write down EVERYTHING he says in lecture you won't do well. His powerpoints also don't help at all since he tests more details so don't bother studying off that.
He really cares about his students and will listen to students if things are too difficult. Online quizzes are easy and he frequently removes unfair questions from his tests so its easy to do well. He is very knowledgeable about the material, although he doesnt answer emails. Would definitely take this class again.
He talks fast and for the whole duration from start to finish and talks about a lot of details that he says once and expects you to remember all of it. He seems like a good guy, but he expects A LOT of memorization of terms, events, names and he sometimes talks about French people you need to know about but does not spell it out or put on slides...
Dr Chastko is a great professor, unlike some that are great researchers or great teachers, he manages to combine both. His lectures are information heavy but he manages to make them interesting and fun with his easy-going personality and sense of humour. I have taken a total of 3 classes with him and I would take, even more, I recommend his classes.
Super nice guy Tough to be engaged in his class, especially when he speaks french in the middle of the lecture D2L quizzes are super easy and you get 2 attempts with the same set of questions so they're a huge grade booster He goes super in-depth though and his midterm was insane. He does curve the grades up but its still stressful
He talks very fast, uses complicated words that further confuse you when he says a French, Chinese, or Russian name without showing it on the slides, and the slides almost don't matter because every detail he says, no matter how briefly he went over it can be on the exams. He seems like a nice guy, I just did not enjoy his lectures at all.
His tests are brutal, he claims half the questions are basic recall of events but hardly any of the questions were remembering basic info. On top of that he tests on certain things he says during lectures and he talks so fast its impossible to take note of everything. Don't bother taking his class as an elective.
Chastko is a solid professor. He leads good discussion which is key for a seminar class and is very knowledgeable in his field. He is passionate about American policy and an engaging speaker. He also gives a free extra week on all assignments which is a definite bonus.
When in his lectures he will have one topic on the slides and he will lecture about another and expect you to know both. He is extremely vague on what you will be tested on (he provides a list of 250 key terms for the mid term and 500 key terms for the final) so its anyones guess which of these you will be tested on. if you have him good luck
terrible notes, you basically have to write word for word what he is saying at the front of the class, if you are thinking about a good option to take as an elective this is not for you, the content heavier than organic chemistry. this guy gave me depression and i do not want anyone else to go through the same thing
Honestly, Chastko is one of the best Prof's I've had. I take one of his courses each semester. He is extremely intelligent, wonderfully respectful and is 100% interested in the students well being. If you are not attending class, passing will be hard - because it is lecture specific. Slides are to give a brief understanding - notes Pass
I didn't get a good or bad mark. But he is by far the most unorganized prof I've ever had. If you have a question he always gives the most vague answers and doesn't give a clear idea on what is important for exam material. Just awful.
Super boring class (even for history), lectures are dry and he talks so fast that its hard to keep up. Tests are pretty difficult but he curves them. Lectures are important because he quizzes on what he says, not the slides or textbook (dont need it) Literally never listened in class or took notes but still got a B+ Wouldnt take him again though
Cares about his students and wants you to succeed. Class is challenging, but not difficult. He gives ample opportunity to learn the material and uses the textbook minimally. Very dull lectures though and often changes slides and doesnt come back to them before done with that subject, but overall a very good prof.
Dr. Chastko is an outstanding lecturer. I always try my hardest to come to class because his lectures are just that good. He always sprinkles in humour in his lectures, which really helps to keep the class engaged. Scarcely a dull moment with this one. Word of warning: His actual lectures contain much more information than the slides he posts. 5/5
He is a great lecturer and is very interested in his course topics. I found the quizzes somewhat difficult especially for just a COST option for most people. If you enjoy the topic take this class. If not find other options.
I found this class pretty easy. You don't really have to go to get a good grade. Everything you need to do for this class is written which I liked because I am not good at multiple choice. The topics in the class are very interesting and easy to follow. Also Dr. Chastko just kind of seems like a cool guy.
The quizzes/tests were unnecessarily difficult for a first year history course. The majority of questions were "choose the best answer", and were drawn from what he said during his lectures, not written on the slides. Many hypotheticals. His lectures are very dry. I was disappointed, given that the content itself is very interesting.
Paul is clearly passionate about what he teaches, however his test questions were very difficult. The lectures slides were paragraphs so there was a lot of material to study. He did curve grades for the midterm which was helpful. Each quiz had two attempts and was open book. He is a great professor but you have to work for it.
Passionate. Educational. Expert. Great class, easy A.
Although he seems intelligent and the content in the course is not hard to understand, this course has proven difficult for me. He quizzes you on extremely small topics that were very briefly covered in the readings/exams. Additionally, he is very inaccessible outside of class. Doesn't seem like he cares about his students or his job too much.
I was so excited to take this class because of the content but the professor makes it challenging. His tests are extremely difficult and unfair as you are quizzed on what he says and not what is actually in the slides. There is an excessive amount of additional readings per section. 40+ pages for some sections. Recommended to take with another prof
Worst class I've ever been a part of. You could put as much effort in as possible and still come across a ridiculous exam. A lot of people I know in this class have actually dropped out because of him. This is an intro course and he has done the complete opposite and discouraged 100% of the people I've talked to in this course. Avoid at all costs.
This professor will single handedly be the reason my life is set back a year. Ive struggled immensely this past year and this class was a huge punch in the face. My PDP program I applied for is basically gone. Due to a test that could be given to a professional historian who would probably still fail, this class is a life ruiner. Save yourself. No
Now I will say I feel like just about the only person who did well in this class. Write the slides first AND THEN take notes on what he is saying. Lectures often had 20 pages of notes in the end, but it's a necessity. Nice guy and interesting class, but I can see why lots of people were upset. Tests were extremely hard for a first yr class.
Paul is a good guy, he cares for his students and he tries to be there for us when we need his help. He even gave us all A+ on our final quiz this semester. However, his tests are insanely difficult. I studied for up to 8 hrs a day for the tests and still got minimal grades ( and I am an A student in my other classes). Not an easy class FOR SURE!
His quizzes and tests were strictly on the content he spoke about, small minor details that did not seem overly integral to the course. None of the information for quizzes or tests were in his slides, strongly suggest having a dictation tool for the class. Definitely would not recommend, class is a GPA ruiner, he also doesn't respond to emails
Great professer, stays after lectures for questions, fair grades, understands things very well.
Very tough grader, he always responds to my emails. he woulnt care if you dont care. Paul knows what he is talking about but there are a lot of words in many of his lectures I wish that he would put less words on the slides
Very good prof
Dr. Chastko is the most understanding, accommodating professor I have ever had. The semester I took his class was an absolute dumpster fire, and he provided consistent extensions and help outside of class beyond even what I believed was reasonable - no questions asked. His lectures are engaging and informative. History can be dry, but he's great.
Avoid this class unless it is absolutely needed. I didn't listen to the other reviews, and now I regret it. The quizzes were long and so material heavy. As a fourth year student this required the work of a 400 level course twice over. Avoid this class at all costs. Please.
Dr. Chastko is a brilliant lecturer and the kindest person. He makes time to help students and his quizzes give you the chance to boost your grade. There is A LOT of material and the midterm is intense, however I learned so much. Even though it wasn't my highest mark, I enjoyed his class so much that I would still have taken it. Truly great prof!
Dr. Chastko is the best professor I've had at UofC. He genuinely cares about making his content interesting and about student well-being. This class is based on MC exams rather than papers which I liked but I can appreciate is not everyone's favorite in a history course. I will 100% be taking another one of his classes! Highly recommend!
Dr. Chatsko is kind, caring and overall a wonderful person and professor. His classes were fun and engaging and I came out of the class with a genuine understanding of the history. He let us tailor our own learning experience through offering different types of assignments and allowing us to choose which ones we wanted to do. Amazing class!
He was amazing in my history class and even talked about recreating the same course under another number so people could retake it for credit. All around super enjoyable prof.
the lectures were pretty good and he is a great speaker. My only criticism would be that the feedback on assignments can be vague at times, but he does give you a good rubric to follow.
He is extremely kind, and accommodating to his students. Very knowledgeable, although the class moves quite fast and just feels like a bunch of niche facts are being thrown at you. Appreciative of his flexibility, although his grading criteria is a little bit funny so read the course outline carefully. All things considered, pretty good prof.
He said he wanted to make this course enjoyable for non-history majors and did the complete opposite. You have to read and memorize 200 pages per topic. The exams are ROUGH, be ready to recall very weird and small details. He tests a lot of things that are never mentioned in his slides. Also, be ready to solve riddles to understand what he's saying.
Kind and Knowledge Prof. Recommend to take again
Really enjoyed the lectures. Dr.Chastko really kept the lectures interesting and he is very respectful. Just have to listen very carefully to what he says.
Exams are terrible. There is a quiz after the midterm instead of before it. The depth of the questions requires you to have an intimate knowledge of the many readings on each topic & guess at what theorists would think. This is a history class that seems designed to make sure you never take another history class. He doesn't respond to emails.
In the first class, he claims that this class is a fun and easy intro class for non-history majors, however this is not the case. Be prepared to spend more time than you'd like reading long and complicated documents from history where he doesn't help explain and lectures require you to take in depth notes to pass any of his tests.
Amazing professor, Super kind and flexible with extensions. Grading is relatively easy and gives good feedback. Holds frequent office hours and is incredibly helpful with any and everything. I have literally no bad things to say about him.
Despite the professor promising the class would be great for non-history majors, it was the exact opposite. There are tons of readings you must do each week if you'd like to do well on his quizzes and his lectures are not very useful since the majority of questions on the quiz come from the readings.
He is a very passionate individual and he is good at being engaging. He's a friendly fellow. You really need to do all the readings to do well on his exams. You get multiple attempts for quizzes which is nice. The slides are a bit bare bones if you don't go to his lectures, so definitely watch his lectures and read!
Prof. Chastko keeps lectures engaging, but the content is dense. Attend class, read the textbook, and utilize resources like unstuck study ai to excel. Exams are challenging, so come prepared.
First time taking a history class and its with Dr. Chastko. I must say in order to do well in this class you must take notes religiously as his slides are not sufficient to succeed. Do the readings so you do well in the quiz. Overall, an easy class! I took this a non history major and I loved it! Take a class with this guy! Hes very kind!
This was my first time taking a history class and its with Dr. Chastko and it was very very interesting and fun. The readings were a bit boring to start but the lectures were like a story that elevated the concepts. You definitely need to read the readings to do well on the quizzes and to further understand the lectures. The exams were easy as well
This class wasn't as easy as anticipated. Not a class you can just throw on the back burner until the last second. However, if you follow along with the chapters and really understand all of the readings and slides, you should be good. Good Prof!
Chastko is funny and warm, he is really passionate about what he teaches which I feel really helped motivate me in the HIST 200 course, it was all online and his lectures were recorded. The quizzes, midterm and final were all open book and incredibly fair.
I have enjoyed HTST 463 with Chastko. Clearly passionate about American history, and gives fantastic lectures. I love how we had the opportunity to choose our assignments. (I wrote two 4-6 page book reviews instead of a 15-page research paper.) Marks assignments quickly and fairly. Would highly recommend taking HTST 463 with Chastko.
One of my favourite teachers
He is so nice and helpful.
Amazing professor with amazing lectures took this course as an elective and I didn't know I was actually going to do good and be interested in the topics. The professor talks about topics we all know like slavery but he goes into it much deeper which is fascinating I have nothing bad to say about this course or professor.
Fun lectures, wants you to succeed in the course.
hes so nice 50/50 on if he emails you back tho lol
