boring
Super nice guy. Never moody, very patient, and treats his students like real people. The class can be a bit boring sometimes but try to participate and he's totally on ur side. Gives 2 breaks too!
Excellent Prof. Makes his lectures really interesting -- but a terribly hard marker.
I am interested in philosophy because of this professor, his ideas, his way of thinking shows how brilliant he is. A good professor, treats you with respect and very willing to help when needed.
Great prof who cares for his students and is extemely easy to approach. Though lectures are dry at times, nonetheless a fair marker who teaches with a passion
Awesome Prof! Makes his lectures so interesting. The marking is pretty fair too.
Great prof. His notes and lectures are golden. If you read the readings a couple of times, and understand his notes/lectures inside-out, you will ace his courses.
Really nice guy. I am kind of bored with the subject of contemporary moral issues, but he makes it pretty ok.
Stay a way from him. Taking the course is just killing time. You will learn nothing from this guy. In addition he is mean too. If you decide to try...good luck to you my friend
pfuuuu.......................................
I thought Philosophy of Love and Sex would be a fun and interesting course, but not w/ Bali. He made "sex" so boring! The couse is all about memorizing his powerpoints, the exams require you to write a lot so good luck completing it in an hour and 20 mins, and he's a hard marker. He said that C is the average for his courses and thinks a C is good
I don't understand why ppl think he's such a hard marker. If you do your readings, pay attention in class, & study hard, you'll do really well. Paul's easy to approach, a fair marker, always willing to help, & a really nice prof. He's also super clear about his expectations for assignments & tests. Never super entertaining but never boring either.
nice enough guy, but dont try to argue a different perspective, he will shoot you down if he doesnt agree-doesnt even try to see things from a different angle.
very good prof, intersting to listen to actualy makes you interested in the course material. take his critical thinking course!
I have never seen Paul shoot down anyones opinion, nor have I seen him remain so firm in an argument that it limits conversation.Paul rewards results and is eager to help students. In class discussions really help with the learning. He is very knowledgeable and encourages you to ask questions to further your understanding.Really enjoyed lectures
Prof Bali is awesome. He is the most approachable professor I have ever had. He is extremely helpful and I feel genuinely wants his students to achieve. I would definitely take another of his courses.
Extremely helpful professors. As long as you attend his class, you can get a good grade in his class.
Bali is awesome, text book material gives you some light as to what the topic is of the day, but he thoroughly goes through the material in class via ppts. He's amazing, and if you listen, and can write an essay its an easy A. He does provide provocative insight to different perspectives. It's not a sex-ed class, but he touches some awkward topics.
I am surprised at the high ratings. This prof sucks, boring as hell and drones on. Good thing about his class is he lets you out of your misery by letting the class go early ---- this is what kept me alive. Drop the course, you have been warned.
Paul is an extremely well-versed, knowledgeable teacher. The consumate philosopher, he always makes me think, and considers everybodys perspective before giving you a completely different and reasonable view. Very enjoyable class, and one of those I looked forward to every week!
Very fun class - the tests and exams are very straight forward. All the notes are on the web for your browsing pleasure so you can relax and enjoy the discussion in class. Highly recommend this prof and the class.
Very interesting instructor. He has fascinating comments throughout his lectures that really get you thinking. He is also very friendly and helpful. Will definitely take another one of his classes. Take him if you want a laid back instructor who answers your questions fully and supports your learning charitably.
SMOKING HOT PROF, very kind personality, knowledgable about his material, provides help where needed and is very interested in the success of his students. Being in his class was a pleasure, I LOVE YOU PAUL!
Paul's a really great professor! Many people find this coarse very difficult but he made it interesting and taught it in ways I could understand. He seemed to always answer everyone's questions and made time to see you after class. You should take advantage of that. There was one test that had some unclear questions but he seemed to correct.
Easy professor (short essays, gives exam question bank ahead of time, testable material is on the slides) who is very helpful. Wants to have you do well, and is more than willing to spend significant amounts of time after class talking with students. Highly recommended
A very good prof for a very good class. Its easy if you are interested in the material, which uses philosophy to interpret the claims of religion and science. I highly recommend it.
Hot prof! This class can be a little tough over a 3 week intensive. However, his expectations regarding exams etc are clear. If you work hard, you'll do well. I got an A-.
Amazing prof :) Tells you what he wants/expects up front. NO ROOM FOR DRAMA! :)
Great Prof! Very knowledgeable, extremely polite, and really helpful. Gives a pool of exam questions beforehand and chooses a few from them. Answers are all in his lecture slides, which are posted on BB. Easy/fair marker, got an A+ in class just by showing up and listening. Take his class if you have the chance!!!!
Professor Bali is amazing! I usually do really bad in liberal courses, but I got the highest grade in his course (when compared to other liberals). Don't skip his class, take good notes, pay attention and study the questions he assigns before a test and you're guaranteed a good grade. Show him some respect and show up to class on time!
He made the course interesting and he knows his stuff well. It is highly recommended to read the assigned readings prior to class, so you'll understand his lectures better. Make sure you study all the sample questions from his review, and also study from powerpoint. Make summary of each article's main points. You'll do good.
This prof is so awesome and just a cool guy overall. He's on the younger side so he relates better to his students. His lectures alone gave me a great understanding of the assigned readings as well as the powerpoints and he is not boring at all. Great class only because he's a great prof.
Very informative and easily comprehendible. Definitely has a strong passion for the subjects he teaches. An extremely fair marker (ie. if you do the assigned readings/ understand the material there is no reason not to do very well in the class) . Also just a genuinely nice guy who's easy to talk with.
Great prof! I really enjoyed all of his classes and looked forward to them every week. He has an amazing vocabulary and explains the material in a very interesting and clear manner. You can tell that he is passionate about the subject matter. He's also easy on the eyes ;)
Amazing prof. He's very passionate about the subject. Some of the course readings were difficult to grasp. You really need to use your dictionary!! But the info is invaluable. If you feel tormented from scary religious doctrines. Come to this class and you will find closure.
There's just something about this prof that made the course so enjoyable. What I liked so much is that the course didn't feel rushed, which is rare for a university class. He is very nice, very approachable and very helpful. Probably my favourite prof at Ryerson so far. ruis
There are very little discussions in class which I found quite off for a Philosophy course. He basically just lectures for the entire class which is rather disappointing. For a class like science and religion I was anticipating much more conversation, discussion and involvement.
Best prof ever! He knows a lot and makes the lectures interesting. Definitely take this class with him if you get the chance. You will learn a lot and it will help you develop your opinions about religious beliefs. I've never heard anyone who talks like him, he makes everything sound really mysterious lol
Amazing prof. Go to class, he is interesting, and his power points are more thorough than those which you can download. Listen carefully, take good notes of his slides, and with his hints for the midterm and final, you will kill it! It always helps when you are being taught by a great teacher. His vocabulary and knowledge are second to none.
He's quite alive and interesting. He looks forward to giving his lectures, and is able to actually give you cliffhanger endings that make you think until his next class. He's really friendly, and likes to help you out however he can. Basically he's worth showing up to class for, and you will get the insight you want from his class.
Very weak public speaker, often drifted off in the middle of sentences or went completely off topic but never returns to the point. Not good at addressing counter arguments. Says be critical but takes theoretical criticisms very personally.
He is awesome.
Paul brings the debate between religion and science to the present. If you have an interest in SF, futurism, or transhumanism, you'll find this course a treat! Do take this course if you have an interest in the topic and are looking to really take something away from it.
AMAZING PROFF !!! EASY AND HE MAKES THE CLASS SOOOOO FUNNN
One of the best prof's Ive had, great dude
Has this eccentric, mysterious vibe to his personality but in the best way possible. Extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the field he studies. Exams are fair so long as you show up to his lectures and take notes, and I'd say he goes a little easier on the marking than most professors do in philosophy. Would recommend without hesitation.
Amazing professor. Never went to class and got 90% on it, maybe its because I did all the reading on my spare time and did the assignment. 1midterm, 1 major paper and Final exam. If you don't go to class, make sure to do the readings! He is very helpful over emails (since i never went to class). No attendance. GoodLuck.
Do the readings and he's a fairly easy marker. He cares more about content than length. For PHL 709, essay was light, 1500 words. Readings were all online through D2L. I went to about 75% of classes, but did all the readings.
Very engaging professor. Really encourages class discussion, so attend with an open mind and readiness to engage with classmates and the readings.
The best class I ever took at Ryerson. Science Religion and Philosophy lectures was not only life changing but focused on further concepts that expand your mind to lengths beyond reality. He likes to talk and you should listen! Challenging course but not to those who think outside the box. Class was a trip, literally lol. I loved it.
Paul is very enthusiastic about his lectures and really encourages the class to participate. He is lenient with deadlines if you email him in advance. Buying the book is a must!
Paul is actually awesome, if you're interested in new ideas and open to actually participating in class discussions you can kill it. I've barely taken any philosophy classes but I was really passionate about philosophy or religion, and my class engagement landed me a 90%! Don't take this class if you're close minded, its a buzz kill
Philosophy is not my major and I had to take this course as my elective. However, he was able to make the class interesting and he is very approachable. The readings that we had to do where difficult, however, I attended each class without reading them and he explained what the reading was about and what we needed to know for the midterm and exam
Readings were posted online (took in summer). MAKE SURE YOU READ THEM. He discusses them in class so make notes on what he talks about. His lectures are amazing and his exams are straightforward. Highly recommend him and would definitely have him again given the opportunity.
Paul is incredible. He is so passionate when he teaches, his lectures are fascinating. All readings are posted online. A+ is very achievable but you must do all the readings. He will give you sample questions that will be on the exam and final. Paper is fairly graded, he know whether you did the readings and grade accordingly. Great guy. 10/10
He is a theist.... even though he doesnt say it openly. not very open minded to the possibility of there not being a God. Pretty sad for a professor in a position of power to influence his students
the test Center lost my final exam and after some back and forth and not finding it he gave me a 92% on the exam. super chill dude. would recommend.
Exactly what I imagined a Philosophy professor to be like. He has these moments in class where he'll be talking about a subject and he'll just look at the floor and gaze off, like he's contemplating life itself. Awesome choice, if you want to take a philosophy class. Super passionate and very friendly.
Professor talks a lot and goes on a lot of tangents which make his lecture really difficult to listen to. His grading criteria is unclear despite giving test questions that he ends up using on the actual exams. Definitely feels like a waste of time being in his class.
He is honestly such a good teacher. I emailed him multiple times and asked him so many questions and he always replied back so quickly and explained it so well! Just go to class and trusst, you don't really need to do some readings either. His lectures are super detailed, pay attention, take notes and you are guaranteed an A! Honestly best prof!!
One of the best profs I've had at Ryerson. He's open about his own personal experiences when relating it to the course content, and he genuinely puts forth an effort to make his lectures engaging, but it can be daunting speaking up about topics you aren't yet comfortable with. Attend classes and pay attention and do the review questions he posts.
Amazing class with lots of open discussion! If you participate you are guaranteed a good mark.... you will also gain more for urself if u express ur thoughts. The best lectures were more of a group discussion YOULL REGRET NOT PARTICIPATING
should go to class cuz the slides dont have much info. This was my 1st phl. i went to all classes and did most readings (there arent a lot). No textbook to buy cuz readings posted on d2l. 1 midterrm, 1 essay, 1 final exam. He gives ques that appear on the short ans exams. It was hard for me to understand him at first but i got used to it. He's nice
I'm honestly not sure how the class is graded I barely got any feedback and it did not make sense. I didn't get a good mark despite knowing almost all the content and going to every single lecture. It seems as though as not going to his lectures will actually make you more prepared for his tests. Philosophizing makes you do worse so memorize.
I stopped doing the readings after the third one. You must go to class because he covers topics outside of readings that you will be tested on, and also explains and elaborates on said readings. He also fully answers all the review questions in class before the midterm and final.
You don't need to be versed in philosophy to do well in this class and don't need to do readings in depth to do well on the midterm/final. Class participation is required as q's asked (SA) on tests are straight from lecture. You may be confused the first day or two, but you will quickly get into the groove of things. Do all sample q's posted!
I have been to all of his classes and feel very ill prepared for the midterm, it feels like he just talks for 2 hours about nothing and never really gets to a point or really tells us about what we will actually be tested on. Although he did post some sample questions, he only answered 1 of them. I will report back after the midterm.
I ended up getting a 57 on the midterm. This is not a bird course and Bali is not the easiest prof to learn from. Although the content is relatively simple Bali does not post much info on the slides and goes off track for a good portion of the class. For reference i have attended all classes, read all of the readings and have a GPA of 3.4 in ComSci
Rajinder does not implement proper marking schemes and tests you on abstract readings that are quite confusing. Stay away at all costs because Raj would rather overcomplicate things than simplify them.
Great prof. Excellent orator. Very abstract. If you dont enjoy abstract philosophy and more continental stuff, do not bother. He is interesting and unique, if that doesn't appeal to you, you will not like him. He is articulate, his assignments make sense, and his courses are good philosophy.
Really interesting course, I feel like I got wiser. The tests and essay were pretty fair but like all Philo courses requires you to think deeply. Paul is a really nice guy and gives a lot of insightful thinking when teaching the course. Really hope he doesn't leave Ryerson because he is a gem compared to others you will find.
I loved this class - Paul really wants students to understand, and even though the class was full of non-philosophy majors he was super respectful answering everyone's wandering questions and pulling them back to course material. Funny, kind and understanding. He also gives great lectures and feedback. I wish I had taken every course with paul!
This was my first philosophy class and I did not know too much about it. At first I was a bit overwhelmed, but after couple of classes, I got the hang of it. I attended every class and his lectures were very interesting and got me to think in depth. He is always helpful and willing to answer and clear up any questions you have.
Dr. Bali is one of my favourite if not favourite professors. His choice of readings and lectures were insightful and he is open to what you have to say and marking based on that. He told us exactly what he expected and we were marked accordingly. Highly recommend taking his courses if you want to take an interesting course, you will be rewarded.
Wonderfully interesting instructor - Dr. Bali was hilarious and engaging, the material he chose to cover was varied and gave me a lot to think about. He was always available to give advice after class or during office hours. Classes were short and I enjoyed the freedom of doing the readings myself and getting help when needed.
I took Issues of Life Deal and Poverty. Paul is funny and super passionate about animal cruelty. Exams are short answer and for the final he actually posted the questions online for you to memorize. He is an inspirational lecturer. Pretty easy pass
Absolutely Incredible. He will go out of his way to talk to you and connect with you if you take the initiative to allow the course material to consume you. Definitely moved me as a student and his exams are quite fair. He really encourages out of the box thinking and grades creativity. He is the epitome of what a true philosopher should be like.
This professor is by far the most funny professor I've ever had, his midterm and finals come straight from the recommend questions he posts. Ends class early so you can dip.
He's an extremely caring professor, and his expectation are clearly laid out and fair.
First philosophy course I've taken and Dr. Bali made it an enjoyable experience. Attendance is necessary since notes will have to be taken down. The midterm and endterm tests are all based on what he says in class since there isn't a lot of information on the slides. Overall he's a great prof.
I had Paul Bali for three classes, and each class I learned the most I've ever learned in university (I'm now graduated.) He is almost too wise/philosophical for academia, he's quite unconventional and the material is very interesting for those who love to dig deep. If you like traditional philosophy profs he may not be for you.
This was my first philosophy class, so I wasn't sure what to expect. His lectures were dense and at times hard to follow. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the material and the readings were all very interesting. I really liked how he released exam questions and allowed you the time to work on them. A fair marker and approachable.
Professor Bali is amazing! I took two of his classes and loved each one! He is knowledgeable, approachable and really just wants his students to learn and do well. Put thought and argument into your papers and you will do well. He is straightforward and tells you what he expects from you. I would take another one of his courses if given the chance.
What a unique philosophy class. Readings can be dense at times, but his lectures are worth it. Really makes you think outside the box, and he's pretty funny. Exams were extremely fair, and the main essay assignment was actually fun to work on. Wish I could've taken this class in person instead of online, as his lectures are amazing.
Professor Bali is great, but you'll have to actually listen to his lectures cause there isn't much information on his slides. Makes you think about the course material, even though some of the readings are really out there and abstract. Lectures are interesting, and he gives actual considerate feedback of your assignments/tests
Took this course online during covid lectures were youtube vids. Midterm essay, 1 movie analysis essay, and final essay. Very interesting course and Bali is the best!
Second time taking a class with Bali and he's still my favourite prof at Rye. I've always done very well on his assignments but not everyone finds him that easy. Come with an open mind because he definitely a little weird (in a good way!). If you are interested in Philosophy you will appreciate what a interesting and creative thinker he is!
I took three course with Dr. Bali throughout my undergrad and he is my favourite philosophy prof at Ryerson. He gives great lectures, is knowledgeable and if you show up to class and do the readings there is no reason you should not get an A well learning a lot.
He's a nice prof. If you like philosophy then you should take this course if not then probably dont. He's sorta of an easy marker and sorta not, just do the readings and you'll be fine. You have to do the readings to help make sense of the topics since the lectures are heavy.
assignment prompts geared towards a theistic answer and the course stayed focused on monotheism and christian influenced ideas. no live classes or scheduled office hours. Lectures were prerecorded from last semester. He goes on long tangents. 3 assignments total and doesnt give much feedback. taught myself the course. I dont like him at all.
Genuinely interesting lectures and a very nice guy. Readings are long but interesting, and he goes over them in the lecture to help decipher the harder readings. Good feedback on assignments, and very reasonable marking. Would definitely take another philosophy course taught.
Prof. Bali is an amazing lecturer. He makes the difficult concepts very easy to understand. He is very approachable if you have a problem with something and constantly follows up with emails to check on students' progress. He is a very fair marker. You might find the essay assignment a little challenging if you do the course readings you are good.
Content: 90% interesting and 10% uninteresting or not as relevant (e.g. the discussion on herding culture) Teaching style: Very understandable Grading: Easy, gives good feedback, someone who actually reads your work Readings: A lot if you're a slow reader like me but most are very interesting
Professor Bali was one of the most interesting and authentic profs I've ever had. I'd take another of his classes in a heartbeat.
You do not have to attend lectures at all. Basically there are no lectures for this course. You just have to read his suggested reading and complete 3 assignements for the whole semester. However, beware that those assignments will suck your blood because they are time consuming and hard to understand. If you get the hang of it, you will do fine.
Tough marker and leaves very little feedback
The language of the course content is hard to understand, and it takes a lot of patience, re-reading and determination to get through all of it. Once you get an understanding, not as hard. Fair marker. Lectures are genuinely interesting.
Fav Prof! Prerecorded lectures, which had interesting topics. 3 assignments total, and was a reasonable marker. The readings were a bit hard but he is available if you needed any explanations. Class is interesting if you enjoy philosophy!
Great guy, super chill, nice and very knowledgeable about subjects. Lecture times were more of an office hour session as lectures were prerecorded and on youtube. Topics are quite interesting & assessments do test your understanding of philosophical concepts. Watch the lectures, do the readings and show him you put in effort, you'll get an A.
the readings + lectures are properly spaced out which i really like. the midterm and exam were just short answer questions and then there was also an informal essay assigned. this course was very lenient and the prof was also funny in some of the lectures. the lectures are quite long but if you space it out, you can gain a lot of info.
All his lectures are prerecorded and the course is only graded by 3 things. Honestly don't even need to do the readings, just pay attention to his lectures and make notes. His grading for the essay is fair and for everything else he is very lenient in my opinion.
Excellent professor. Students don't participate. Students cheat.
i never went to any of the lectures and still did great. although i've heard really good things about him so i kinda wish i didn't miss them. two tests, one essay, all very easy and the material itself is super interesting. i did have to watch back the lectures for the tests, which took a while but was still easy.
Great Professor, very passionate about the content and nice, always willing to help when you have questions and a moderately easy grader.
Interesting philosophy course with prerecorded lectures. Assessments test understanding, but can be time-consuming. unstuckstudy helped with study prep. Overall, an engaging class if you enjoy the subject.
really boring and rambles a lot, honestly can't
Amazing professor, really knowledgeable. His lectures explain everything but are 2hrs each. (he does ramble a bit) He is super clear about grading criteria, there are only three exams/assignments, no grade for participation. Took two more courses by him because how much I enjoyed his teaching style
Paul is an absolute icon. He should start an asmr channel tbh. His voice is calming and makes you want to learn. He knows what he is teaching. He gives great examples, ones you can reference in future conversations even. Loved his essay topics too, so interesting. I would 110% take a class with Paul again. He is probably the best I have had at TMU.
Paul Bali single-handedly murdered any interest I had in philosophy. Graded like he enjoys watching dreams die. Zero compassion, zero flexibility. Took my will to learn and set it on fire. Avoid like the plague. If you want to hate philosophy and yourself, sure, take his class. - class gc 2025
Overall decent prof. Course was based on midterm, final, and an essay. He marks the midterm and final fairly as long as you mention what he talks about in the pre-recorded lectures.
Chill prof, he does tend to ramble a lot in his lectures, 30% midterm, 30% final and 40% essay. For his final and midterm you just have to answer 5 out of 6 questions, he did say he was going to change his ways for midterms and finals since he is SUPER against AI, overall fair marker and super nice! FYI his voice will make you fall asleep.
he is a very good prof passionate about his course, i took both CPHL110 and CPHL201 with him as a cs major for my lower liberals and he was a breeze, a midterm endterm and an essay is ur overall mark and he marks well if u follow his explanation in class for the concepts
I was so excited for this class, but the course lacked engagement, and lectures felt one-sided. The professor's dismissive attitude toward student concerns made the learning environment feel unsupportive. Questions were met with rigidity rather than guidance. Overall, not a class that encouraged growth or open communication.
One of those philosophy/elective professors full of ego, avoid like plague unless you love to bring your grade down, course literally consists of pre-recorded youtube videos with 0 efforts from his side and then he would love to judge you with his personal bias through lockdown browser exams. Try Sasa Stankovic, if still interested in philosophy.
Tough grader, does not care for his students, highly opinionated for a philosophy teacher, would not recommend
Uses lockdown browsers for all of his tests (include mic and camera), you actually have to study his lectures to do good on the tests however they are pretty boring. Not a lot of engagement but thats not a bad thing, made it easier to balance with other courses. All his courses r posted on youtube so hes a pretty low effort prof.
2 exams with 8 short answer questions each. uses respondus monitor for the tests which is a bit annoying as it lags sometimes but he marks fairly easily. if you take notes on the lectures and study you can pretty easily get 100. study the example questions they are on the 1st test. 1 informal 1500-word essay.
