One of the most straightforward professors at school. He only tests on material he covers on homework, so there are no surprises. Gives detailed solutions to homework so studying is fairly straightforward.
Professor Barloon always had a joke to every class period. He is quite a quirky type of guy, which adds a creativity to the class. He fixes his mistakes and listens to e-mails. The tests are pretty hard, so know the material. he will extend an assignment date if we didn't get to the material yet in class. He was realistic and understood students.
The only tests are midterm and final but partial credit is given on everything. Weekly quizzes are given by TA's and partial credit is given them too. Online homework once a week and clicker questions in class for points. Lectures can get boring but the notes help on the homework. Notes are posted online and never used the textbook.
Take this class during the summer!(I took it in the fall) Getting help from SI and the TA is essential. The tests are the worst. The practice exams help, but some tests will have one question worth 20% of the grade and it's a random homework problem the is re-worded. Our class averages on tests were in the low sixties and there is no curve.
Very, VERY easy to follow. Is really great during lecture although it may get boring. Homework is very easy, allows multiple attempts so you should always get 100. Quiz every week is easy and only 2 exams, Midterm and Final.
Fantastic professor, hope to have him again soon.
He's one of the best math professors I have encountered. I think I'm getting a B-, but that is my fault because I didn't prepare as I should have for my quizzes and exams.
Lecture is long and boring and he uses clickers so be ready to go to class.
Some may say that his courses are tough. I disagree with that, calculus isn't an easy subject for many, so don't blame the professors if you don't work hard enough. It's college people, not high school.
Dr. Barloon is the best math professor I had so far. He is very clear at communicating the material during the lecture and make sure you understand them. The way that he organizes his class is very clear. His class was one of the most highest attendance I ever seen in college. I will def suggest him if you want to really learn the material!
Paul was a good lecturer, since that is all he does. I definitely does help in the first weeks to look at the book, since you can find the formulas used in blue boxes, and if you can memorize all 6 of them you should do well on the first exam. He had a tendency to push back assignments if he hadn't covered the section material fully.
Good professor but tough grader.
Great professor. He truly cares about his students. He adds more test than needed during the semester but they are truly beneficial to the student because you are always studying making the midterm and final less stressul. His test are very easy!
This class was very easy and this professor helped to make it so by explaining each concept clearly so even if you had no prior knowledge about the subject you were going to be fine. A great class and professor.
I didn't do too hot that first time I took Math 165 so I decided to take it again. This time I got Paul and he made everything so clear to me. Where I was confused last semester, I was an expert at this semester. He is very clear and has online videos of each lecture and examples. I hope to have him as a professor in Math 166.
Very good at explaining problems and going over how ideas work. If you have never done calc before he goes through how to do all the shortcuts and explains all the steps he is taking to get to the answers.
Paul Barloon otherwise know the god of calculus. He has great lecture and overall provides clear cut examples and made the class very easy to understand
Great teacher. Knows what he's talking about. Fun teacher and doesn't care what you do.
Paul Barloon is great guy, and for sure knows his stuff when it comes to calculus. I found that it was not necessary to attend daily lecture, as I could teach myself just as efficiently doing the online homework. The weekly quizzes are not bad if you study and know the homework. The tests were challenging, and graded without much curve.
Professor Barloon is one of the best math professors here at Iowa State because he explains his work so well and makes sure his students understand it as well.
I had him for 165 and 166; he is that great. He makes math easy to understand. Just know that his quizzes/exams center around homework. As long as you understand and do every homework problem, you'll do good on his quizzes and exams.
Dr. Barloon does an excellent job making mathematics easy to understand. The book was completely useless; if you don't understand it how he explains it, the book will only confuse you more. He really seems to care about his students.
Mr. Barloon is awesome! He explains everything super clearly and explains where everything comes from. He was pretty quirky and funny during lectures too. He seemed to care a lot about the students and was a great lecturer. He did give a lot of online homework, but it was beneficial in the end.
Dr. Barloon is a great Prof. Calc 2 is a hard class, but if you are having trouble, he is fairly accessible outside of class. His lectures are very helpful, and the exams he writes are extremely fair. Take him if you have the option to for any class.
Barloon gives great lectures and does a ton of examples. He explains how most formulas were derived which makes them much easier to understand and remember. He never uses a chalkboard because he writes everything on a tablet. His lecture slides with and without his writing on them are available online so it is very easy to review for tests.
Weekly homework, weekly in class quizzes, and daily participation. You can skip lectures and be able to still get a score for the participation from home. You can't skip recitations without missing an in class quiz. No curve for the grades and it's a tough course if you don't pay attention.
If you show up to class and pay attention to what he says then you will do fine on quizzes. Also participation is graded. His tests are fair if you study whats on his practice tests. Final and midterm aren't made by him and will rail you if you don't study hard.
Paul Barloon is an absolutely outstanding professor. I never have I had an instructor who comes to class more prepared, & more driven to ensuring an easy A & developed understanding of Math. Go to class, take notes, and do the homework. I had him for Calc 1, 2, & 3 by choice after calc 1 because of his straight forward/understandable teaching style.
Go to class and pay attention. If you made it through calc 1 without trouble and calc 2 parametric equations, you will be fine. Take Paul if you can
Amazing guy. Uses in-class examples and top hat questions that go together perfectly. I personally wish he could have taught every one of my math classes. He does have a very tight grading scale, but if you show up to class and prepare yourself for the fairly easy tests, you'll do well.
Really good at explaining topics in class, and does step by step processes that are easy to follow. It's really worth going to lecture because you'll get tips and advice from him that will make the homework so much easier.
Uses online program ALEKS for homework. Theres no other assignments besides ALEKS. Youll do a worksheet on resitation days with a group. Easy class if you just do the homework modules on ALEKS and do the sample tests before exams.
5/5. Cares about the material, teaches very clearly and at a decent pace. Tests are more than fair. Always prepared for class and wants everyone to do well. Take him for math, hes the best math teacher I've ever had. I failed Pre-Algebra in middle school and have gotten to this point, and going on to Calc II because of Barloon.
Really good professor for Calc 1, takes time to break down mathematical jargon
Awesome clear lectures, nice guy, good class structure with weekly quizzes and online hw. Tests are stuff that is expected, and he also provides tons of resources/video lectures online.
Barloon is the man! He is a great teacher and he's not intimidating. I had to retake Calc 165 and he explains concepts much better. He has tons of material for students, including homework, online lessons, and weekly quizzes, but if you take advantage of your resources (Student Instruction, TA help desks), I guarantee you'll come out on top!
Calculus is hard as is and Barloon attempts to take it easy and fully explains how to find the equation but if you zone out your done for. Quizs every week. HARD AS HECK midterm. Tophat is used every day. Hes not awful by any means hes just not the greatest if you know what I mean.
Great professor who truly cares about being an effective teacher. Tests and quizzes given by him are easier than what other profs give. This was my first math class in 2 years, but I was still able to get a decent grade because he doesn't give impossible exams. Lots of homework, but if you use Symbolab it won't take as long.
Personally I loved Barloon because he would explain the derivation of equations really well which helped me understand everything behind each equation instead of just the equation itself. His class is no more difficult than any of the other calc 265 courses, but it is definitely a class that you need to show up to everyday if you want a good grad.
He is a very good lecturer. Walks through derivations of formulas and their applications. Best calc professor that I have had. Really helps you to understand the material better.
The Calculus department at Iowa State is coordinated, so lectures will all cover the same topics at the same time throughout the semester. He is easy to understand, and will gladly go into detail on something if it didn't make sense the first time. He can go a little fast, but he gets through the material, so it's a trade off that has to be made.
He has top hat in class. Best math teacher I've had at any school. Utilize his videos he posts about the lectures after class. He does a good job of "dumbing" down every subject in calculus which is helpful.
I really enjoyed Barloon's lectures. He really understands the material and articulates ideas well. Calc 3 lets you attend any lecture as top hat is not for credit, so if you don't like his lecture you can attend another professor's to figure out who you like best.
Have had Barloon for 3 semesters. Great instructor that has tons of in class examples and top hat. Great at answering questions and is willing to tell you if he doesnt know the answer and will her back to you. Accessible outside of lectures. Homework is out of his control, but not awful.
Barloon was a very good lecturer, but focused a lot more on derivation than example problems. This made it difficult to apply what we learned for the test without a lot of extra work. However, the class being departmental had very accessable resources and Barloon was easy to meet outside of class.
Very good lecturer. Walks through all the steps of a derivation, and although it may seem pointless, the more experienced you are with calculus, the more you can see how related everything is. The better understanding you have of the relationship between all of the concepts in calculus, the better prepared you will be for the exams in Calc 3.
The tags sort of suggest that the class sucks, but Paul Barloon is very skilled at explaining topics in a way that I can understand. He'll say things like "let's see, I don't know how to do this right away. Oh! let's try this" and continues to go through the example. Basically the entire class is examples but they're very helpful and study for exam
Teaches Calc 2 very well and answers all questions. He tends to go slow through the majority of the lecture then rush through the last few minutes, but it's not too big of a deal. He tries to joke around sometimes to make the class less awful, so it takes a little bit of stress out of the lectures!
Calc I at iowa state in general is a nightmare, but it is worse when the professor does notes so fast that the class can't keep up, and skips examples that will be on the exam.
He's a very solid lecturer. Sometimes can get boring but it is math lol. He's very prepared, speaks clearly, and always is responsive to questions in class. Once you get the math program format down, you'll be able to bust through these 3 calc classes. If you go to class, finish all your quiz sets, and study the math166 site info, you'll be good.
Paul has been my favorite professor by far at Iowa State. He is very good at explaining complicated equations into words that students can understand. He always treated students with respect and students treated him with respect as well. If you must take an advanced math class at Iowa State, I would definitely recommend taking that class with Paul.
Barloon's lectures are a bit dry and he can make the problems appear more difficult than they actually are. The only thing that scares me in this class is that the tests are show-your-work style and not multiple choice.
Barloon was organized and diligent. You always knew what to expect from his course and it made it easier for me to stay on top of studies. However, I could not keep up with his lecture notes. He crammed as much information in as possible often saving the hardest concept for the last 3 minutes of class. It was really frustrating.
Honestly seems to care about students learning. Hard to show up because the majority of the class you can teach yourself with ALEKS. Lots of Homework, but given enough time to complete. Willing to explain things further if you have questions.
Dr. Barloon was exceptional. He explains things really well. Lots of top hat. Tests are easy if you do the homework. Lots of hw on Aleks, but if you manage your time it isnt bad. My only complaint is that he would give tophat with 30 secs left of class (when i had a class 10 mins after this one that was a far walk) Other than that, great guy.
This professor is super nice and explains very well. He will explain more than one problem of the same one if you don't get it. His exams aren't that hard, but you have to understand the problems he gives you and what to do with them. You'll do good if you just practice from Aleks most days.
Math 140 is a decent class, most of the learning and homework is done on a site called ALEKS (very helpful in my opinion.) Attendance points are taken every class and each week there is generally a group project to work on. Showing up is important to succeed in this class.
Did not enjoy his class. If you took pre-calc in high school, it's just about the same thing. However, I only felt more confused when I went to lectures. Of all the simple ways there are to solve a problem, he took the hardest route every time. He uses tophat for participation, did not enjoy that. I felt that I learned much more on canvas alone.
There was no book for this class, but you had to buy a top hat to get attendance points. You could do the top hat from your room so you don't have to go to class, but if you miss them it will affect your grade. There are recitations once a week and are graded every other week. You work as a group in recitations. The tests are in person.
Maybe it was because calculus online sucks, but I had a very hard time following his lectures. His monotone voice does nothing to help. Homework wasn't bad, and there were always lots of example problems available.
If you are taking MATH 165, I would 100% recommend taking it with Paul Barloon. He "simplifies" all of the math wordiness into something students can understand. His lecture notes are also straightforward, he introduces the topic, writes down how to solve problems based on the topic, and then goes through some examples in class. One of the best.
Absolutely great professor makes learning calc easy,
Barloon is a solid lecture teacher. Easy to understand and clear on what is being covered. The only complaint is that he teaches at a fast past and spacing out will cause you to miss out on most of the information for what he's teaching. Overall enjoyed the number of examples. Feel free to miss lectures, Butler videos still exist.
Professor Barloon gives fairly effective lectures, but often seems to fall behind and has to speed through some things to stay on track. Overall, he was a good professor and is very knowledgeable about what he teaches. He was often available in the help room, which was very helpful.
Amazing professor that answerd all questions clearly. Very approachable and nice.
What can I say About Prof. Barloon, the way he teaches makes you understand what's going on. He discourages memorization and goes into great detail on how a formula was formed. Although he is always rushed at the end since he is always behind schedule, he is an amazing professor.
His lectures can be a little dry at times, but he is a very good guy.
Barloon is a cool guy who's approach to math is refreshing. He will treat all math backgrounds equally in the course and has a fun teaching style if you go to lectures. They are not mandatory and you can easily learn the material on your own. However, this tendency gets dangerous for the weekly recitation quizzes.
Seriously the best professor I've ever had! He is so helpful and ensures you know what's going on before moving on. The content was difficult but he made it easy to manage and made me feel like I COULD do hard things. 10/10 recommend!
Great lecturer!! Really simplifies the material and makes it digestible. He has a good idea of what students make mistakes on and forget, which makes his lecturers super helpful.
He sounds like he just mumbles to himself all lecture and moves way too fast. if you've never taken calc before this class is a nightmare. the test he writes are very different formatting and ways to ask a question compared to practice tests and what's covered in class.
Very open to learning and adapting his teaching style based on how comfortable his students are in the material which is demonstrated through his top hats throughout class. Focuses primarily on examples and an a borderline cheat code come exam time because his examples are so helpful and often pretty close to what's actually on the exam.
Lectures and explanations make no sense. When asking questions, he seems like he's forced to answer instead of just helping
He's a pretty chill guy, lectures are usually stretched time toward the end of class, and that causes some confusion. Otherwise he's always asking if students have questions and mentions everyday where students can get help. Also he links his slides which always contain problems that look awfully similar to test questions.
Super great lectures that make calculus pretty easy to learn
Very long lectures that often go over the time. Covers very few examples which often do not correlate to the homework at all and leave a lot to be answered. Nice guy but mumbles a lot.
Focuses heavily on examples during lecture, not spending too much time on conceptual stuff. Follow along with the examples, even if you don't understand it totally, and you'll do just fine in the class.
he explains everything really good and clear. straight to the point. his lectures cover the material fast but not too fast. is really good at answering questions too. would def take again.
SOS this man is not here to cater to students he is on the move and you better keep up godspeed everyone
Calc 1 is generally an exam-heavy course, but between Barloon and Butler, you have two great options. Barloon explains things well and makes concepts easy to understand. He also answers your questions clearly as long as you ask them. I only got a bad grade because I'm not good at math, but he's still a very good teacher
Moves fast, but overall a pretty good professor. He's nice and gets excited over being asked good questions. Not intimidating, but to be fully prepared for exams it's good to have outside sources like youtube.
Barloon is a great professor and would make sure nobody was left behind. As a result, some concepts would be sped over to maintain pace. Lectures were helpful, but watching Steve Butlers videos online was just as good or better. Exams were challenging, but working over past exams was extremely helpful.
Barloon's Calc 1 lectures are pretty good; he goes in-depth to explain essential topics and makes a point to show the derivation of certain equations if he feels necessary. Sometimes, classes can get slightly behind, but I doubt we lose much. Overall, he's a good prof and he makes the class enjoyable.
Barloon is a great guy, and he's great during help hours in the morning before quizzes. However, it was difficult to keep up with his insanely fast-paced style during his lectures, and he mumbled a lot. Great dude, but butler was the one who taught me all the material.
He's good at teaching. Attendance is not mandatory, but it helps a lot to go to lectures because he will give hints and things to remember.
Hes a really fast paced teacher and for me that was not an issue but for other that may be. Keep in mind that he is fast for an ALREADY fast course.
Every time I attended Prof. Barloon's calc lecture, I left feeling confused. Maybe it's just me, but Butler's videos ended up teaching me better than the lectures. However, Barloon does teach the topics well, he just uses different ways than Butler. His lectures are also very fast-paced, and he doesn't always give a full explanation. Nice guy tho.
Barloon is a great Professor to have in Calculus, if you can't get Butler. Barloon has well-thought-out notes in classes, and the warm-up questions are always really helpful. My only gripe is that he gets very far behind the rest of the lectures, causing fewer review days and being behind for the Homework.
For calc 1, he explained incredibly well and adequately prepared us for all of the exams. I highly recommend you go to class as he does a good job in actually teaching the material as well as giving tips that might help us on tests.
Prof. Barloon is a great teacher for Calc 3. He explains the concepts really well and always pair each with a couple example. He's so lively and energetic for a 7:45 AM class and that alone makes it worth it to wake up early three times a week. I like the way he breaks down the equations into something digestible. Class could be a little slow.
