Dr. Bates is the best! He love Genetics and you can tell everyday. You can ask him ANYTHING and he'll help you with it. He's very approachable and it's impossible to fall asleep in class because you'll be intrigued the whole time. Also makes jokes to keep things interesting. Very good professor, the class was easier then my high school bio class, I think because that teacher was a tougher teacher and taught at a college course level. He doesn't have crap loads of stuff on the power points which is good, assigns reading in little chunks, and finally gives out ec outside of class for tests!

He is very nice but you MUST go to class and actually listen to what he is saying and take notes on that. Do not rely on notes that he puts on the slides, those are very broad compared to what is on the tests. You will have to study in detail to get a decent test grade. He wants students to come up with "applied" thinking when anwsering questions

I appreciate his "dad jokes" and his style of teaching, but because it's a general class (gen bio 2) the tests cover a ridiculous amount of material. The lab exams are incredibly difficult. I have heard from others he is not very approachable. All in all, I would say take his section if you can.

He may have been better if we were not sent online but he was very inflexible in the face of the pandemic and online class. His exams are very very difficult and require synthesizing the information on a whole new level. A large amount of the points are from labs and discussions though. He focused a lot on the details instead of the big picture.

My favorite prof at UMD, easily. I'm actually excited to go to class when he's teaching. Very friendly, cracks some good jokes, and great to talk to after class. He's obviously passionate about the subject (Food Science), and even baked some bread so he could show us the process himself. Wonderful. 10/10.

I loved GB2 with professor Bates! The lectures were recorded and usually had a few questions for participation points. Every point counts! The exams are difficult and really require you to apply your knowledge, but most of the questions come straight from the lecture so if you take good notes you should be fine.

TERRIBLE!! Uses a lockdown browser for his exams. Exams are 50 questions and you only get 55 minutes to answer them. He is a very unfair grader for lab reports. He also assigns 4 assignments in 1 day. This class is a nightmare. Go take it somewhere else because Duluth doesn't offer other options. He is the "Karen male version"

Bates was a better professor than most. He definitely gives you enough practice questions to the point where you should know the material fairly well. The exam is timed so that you can't cheat by looking up the questions. And about 1/4 of the exam questions are either homework questions or the lecture questions. So just attend and you'll do fine.

Don't get me wrong, Professor Bates is a funny professor and makes lectures somewhat enjoyable.
