he's a pretty good teacher. gives a lot of hw and essays but they really do help.
Brillant professor. Individual thinker. His class will make you re-examine society.
easy grader :)
i learned so much from this him. You honestly get what you put into this class. Your earn your grade
He is very helpful and likes class discussions. If you participate in the class, he will definitely like you. Good teacher too.
Prof. Beehler is really cool. His assignments are fair yet fun. Not so easy that they're boring, but not too difficult either. He's really helpful and encouraging.
professor beehler is one of those guys that you can just approach off the bat... he's just THAT nice. never a time when he's not willing to help his students. great professors make you think and he is one GREAT professor. A++++ to him :)
he has a ery generous revision policy. Will help you a lot to improve your writing also willing to read your papers and topics before the paper is due.
Very great professor and very enthusiastic about his teachings. He is extremely helpful and very easy to get along with. Very nice guy. Very knowledgeable.
Good teacher, and very friendly. He seems really passionate about his subject, and sometimes gets a little carried away talking about it. But, hey, he likes what he's doing, and passes that feeling to the students.
Crappy teach, make you read crappy books, absolutley NO HELP IS GIVEN FOR SUBJECT A. most will fail again. very tough class. MANY essays.
Great professor... tries hard to learn ur name, which could be a bad or a good thing. You'll get a better grade if you actually participate in the discussions in class. Seems like he doesnt help w/subj. A but he actually does by teaching you how to write a well structured argumentative essay.
He's HORRIBLE... yea yea nice and sweet and crap.. I think his evil spirit corrects the essays... VERY HARD GRADER... VERY VERY TOUGH.. In the entire class, only one A out of 30 people
He is very nice and that is what throws people off because he grades like the devil
He seems very nice and acts very nice. But dont be fooled, he grades like no other. When it comes to grading, he as said before, is the devil. He is very picky on how he wants his essays and your best work will be his worst. He sucks as a teacher and a grader. AVOID AT ALL COST.
HORRIBLE! He is nice but gave me a C-, now im taking english again! Don't take him he wants everything to be perfect. Your essay can be great based on content but he has thing about grammar! err!! He goes off in class also about unrelated things topics just avoid him!
Beehler is the professor i'll remember the most. His class wasn't that easy but he was overly helpful and extremely fun to talk to about politics and social issues. I normally always talked to him after class on the class topics and otherwise. Very funny, lots of work and reading but the best there is heh.
He is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. Nice guy, I had some good conversations with him, but he sucks when it comes to grading. I never get less than an A on any other essays, but I never got better than a D on any of his.
He was very enthusiatic, but he was horrible at grading and explaining what he wanted. It is more of a talking group more than a class. He does not explain nor teach anything, he just has u ready stuff and talk about it. Sounds easy huh, but when u have to
Friendly and enthusiastic about his subject. Unfortunately, he has an obsession with perfect grammar. I got marked down so many times for using the phrase "there is" or "it is" or "there are" and variations thereof. Drove me crazy. No professor I had before or have had since has marked me down for that. However, he's good at explaining the material, and making class interesting.
Very helpful professor. The class is by no means the easiest one, it requiers alot of reading. The papers were a bit tough to write, but thats why there are office hours.
This teacher's horrible. He doesn't teach much and doesn't really explain his assignments too well. This wouldn't be too bad except for the fact that he expects nothing above his definition of perfection, which is severly flawed. His sense of "instructing" relies on overly-critical grading to compensate for his sub-par teaching.
He sucks at teaching. Doesn't explain anything and just likes to talk about useless stuff
hard class...lots of writing, presentations, two midterms, and an in class final..
class is def. not an easy class but mr. beehler made it interesting. he truly cares about the improvement of your writing. a little picky about grammar, yes, but didn't get marked down for it a lot. he is very helpful, go to his office hours and you'll do well in the class.
Prof. is serious about giving out work and nailing you if not in on time. The class is a lot of work and essays, but he is a really good teacher that will do anything to help out. If you're looking for a chill-class, this is NOT it. But if you like englsih, take him! His sense of humor is awesome.BUY THE BOOKS!
A very horrible teacher! Not a man of his word. Can't really teach the material. He does not grade you base on the class level. He marks every single detailed errors and brings your grade down for that. He think too highly of himself. Tell you one thing than change it the next day. Very boring in class. Not very effective with teaching. Negative!
(1) Hard class (2) Nice professor (3) Overall, it's going to be somewhat easy (4) Don't have to write too much [as compared to other professors] (5) Pay attention in class, do the work out of class, and then you will most likely succeed in his class (6) If you go above and beyond in what you do in-class/out-of-class assignments, you'll do excellent
When I took his class, i thought it was really easy. if you do all the work, then it won't be hard. He was a good teacher that would make funny comments every now and then.
Professor beelher is a really tough grader when it comes to essays. Just read your books, do your projects and don't procrastinate on the projects. Actually put descriptions in your essays be as descriptive as possible and you'll do fine. I always go to learning center to get extra help.
He is a really TOUGH grader on essays/papers! Assigns a lot of papers, group projects, journals, readings. Basically if you have a loaded schedule- don't take his class, because you will end up dedicating a lot of your time to his assignments. Doesn't offer extra credit. A pretty happy/ nice man WITH a MEAN grading/critiqueing PEN!
VERY VERY VERY HARD GRADER!!! his class is very intresting, and the way he contructs the discussion in class is lots of fun. however if you want an A then Dr. Beehler is nottt a good choice. i worked really hard and ended up with a B!
He thinks too highly of himself, "I don't want to talk to stupid people." He is a really hard grader so AVOID him. We do more than other English classes plus your 3 hours final = 3 essays (on final day). How lame is that!!
Focuses too much on grammar! If your essay contains good content, it wouldn't matter because if you're grammar is bad he'll grade you down regardless. He makes corny jokes and is not helpful during office hours. Doesn't help with progress too difficult. Want a good grade DO NOT take Beehler!
He is a harsh grader! He pays attention to the littlest details! He's ok as a person, but when he has discussions he has to be right! so just argue with him.
This professor is a really harsh grader and requires alot of reading and writing. You get weekly journals, group assignments and papers to write every week and a half or so...
THIS TEACHER IS A VERY HARD TEACHER. Very picky when it comes to grammar. I would not recommend taking him. He does not help at office hours, he is usually late or there is such a long line of people wanting to see him that he dosnt get to you. He dosnt proof read essays instead brushes you off. This class is very hard AVOID taking it.
Hands down hardest grader. I learned to hate english because i had to attend class 3 times a week & see his face. This man thnks he is superior to everyone & is a Condescending teacher, who enjoys demoralizing his students. Initially, he acts nice, but after week 1 you will note his arrogant tendencies and learn to detest him.Avoid & save your GPA!
Seems like a happy go lucky person and that he's all about passing his students, but thats not the case. He is VERY tough on grammar and takes points off for MLA. His personality annoyed me. Do not take him if you want a decent grade.
If you like passing a class or getting a good grade don't take this guy. He's so strict on grammar that he'll cut your grade by a whole letter just for a few errors. He's relentless and unforgiving and seriously cares less about the student. It seems like he tries to find the easiest way out where he does as little work as possible. Don't take.
I wish I had checked him out on ratemyrpfoessors before having registered for his class. It's not impossible to pass his course so long as you read every assignment he gives and study the notes he gives in class. But with a loaded course schedule you may not have enough time (as I didn't). Nice guy, nonetheless.
Dr. Beehler's class can be a challenging and he does require a certain level of writing. If you attend class and complete the assignments. You're able to learn a lot from his class. I enjoyed his class very much and I took English 1B and 1C with him.
He just published a book in Spain so imagine how hard he grads. he gives students the false hope of passing. his class is RIDICULOUS its like English & Literature. his midterm is unnecessary and his final is terrible in 3 hrs you have to write 2 essays and a bit over 50 short answer questions! he expects 2 much. my advise is STAY AWAY and drop him.
extremely difficult grader
Awesome teacher, is clear, and brings up interesting and new ideas. Tests are easy as long as you study. Assigns easy weekly journals. I personally enjoy them as you get to write your mind with regard to a particular reading. Best reads so far...SuperFreakonomics. One of the best English teachers I've had so far. -Person from Section 067
I would not recommend this professor! He grades extremely hard, is unfair & expects too much, especially if you're of HISPANIC DESCENT (says Spanish "slang" gets in the way) better chance of passing if you're of white & asian descent.Attendance is extremely important so do not miss & final is unnecessary! DROP while you can dnt say i didnt warn you!
He is a really great teacher, I we did not waste a single class session without learning something interesting and useful for your writing. He is one of the best instructors a I've had by far. He is a tough grader and attendance is mandiotory, but as long as you pay attention in class and attend office hours your pretty much set.
He was absent from class so many times. He told us to buy 3 books, but only used 2 books and only used 1/2 of the write it. He grades his essays unfairly. If he likes you, you get a better grade (even if you are off topic). My friend and I both wrote essays. Mines with on topic, hers wasn't. We both got B's...
He was horrible. He expected too much of his students. He grades absolutely too hard. Do not take him at all.
Don't take if you want an easy A. He never seems to be pleased with students essays. Expects a lot from his students. Takes control of a discussion instead of letting the students lead it. If you try you can get a C+ at least.
Be clear and concise in writing. He is very impressed with strong writers. Doesn't give out A+ though, even to top students... Be interesting in essays. Classes are quite boring, and discussions are quite dull. Helpful in one-on-one, direct questions. Be extremely careful about grammar.
He's a chill guy but pretty hard in my standpoint. ESSAYS ARE BASICALLY EVERYTHING. im not even sure if he took group projects and ect into consideration. He grades essays VERY STRICTLY. If youre a strong writer then you will do well. If not then expect C's and if lucky B's. He expects so much out of your essays. If im you look for a different prof
Loved Beehler, but he was a really hard grader. I got a C+ and I tried really hard. Good professor though. He's intelligent.
Dr. Beehler is a great professor. He tells you exactly what he expects from essays. I got a C- on my first paper just because of grammar. But overall he is a great professor.
Horrible, extremely hard grader. "He gives students the false hope of passing." His class discussions and homework assignments are sometimes intresting but it just doesn't help you with the essays. His midterm is unnecessary and his final is terrible: in 3 hrs you have to write 3 essays! He expects too much. My advise is STAY AWAY from him.
Although intelligent and thorough, he is unhelpful, self-absorbed and tends to over-complicate topics. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he assigns random quizzes and doesn't post lecture slides. He will go through the slides rather quickly at times during class so be prepared. Also be prepared to do a good amount of reading and writing.
If you thoroughly answer an essay prompt using decent grammar, you should have no problem receiving an A. He is not as bad as everyone says. Not easy or hard, like any other class, you just have to work for a good grade.
He is a horrible teacher. I always thought that writing was like an art that each and every person had their own writing techniques but he just looked at the papers as a textbook graded thing. It felt like high school class taken all over again from the 5 paragraph essays and the formulaic writing. Originality is not valued in his class.
Expects way too much. 10 pop quizzes. 1 midterm. 4 essays. 2 oral presentations. Weekly readings. A final. Professor Beehler is quite nice but assigns way too much work.
Provides no motivation for students considering students are told that class averages is normally a C. No matter how much help you seek, you will still end up with a C on your essays. Lectures are only important for the midterm. Final is based on evaluating an article.
One of the worst classes in my college career. Professor doesn't teach; he just reads off a piece of paper and slides. Monotone and his attempt at being funny falls way short. Demands an absurd amount of work, yet doesn't put the same effort into learning how to teach a college course. It really sucks that this class is mandatory. Stay classy, UCR.
This class is so boring. He offers little to no insight on anything! He really needs to go back to school and learn how to teach effectively. Whatever he's doing is a detriment to the school and the students paying to learn.
It isn't that hard to get a C in the class; however,it is seriously impossible to get an A . It is too bad because the material can be used in the workplace, but I think that the prof and the TA's should take and get an A in the class before being allowed to teach and grade students.
Has high expectations for students that's why he grades super hard? Reiterates the book basically throughout his lecture, talks nonstop, and sometimes segues off topic. All A papers are to be re-evaluated by him to receive the A . Tries to be funny but has a dry sense or humor. I would NOT recommend him. AVOID!
First things first, this guy seems worse than Jasso. Second he seems to enforce a "C" grade. Trying to make your class look tough by giving enforced grades rather than what a person ought to get, does not make you a great professor. Third, he goes off topic like every 3-5 minutes, yet he's an English professor. Doesn't post slides but goes fast.
BEWARE. This class requires TIME and EFFORT. I was able to manage to get B, A, B, B+ in the four essays. My final grade come to a B+; however Beehler strongly enforces C averages. He made sure I didnt receive a B+ by accusing me of plagiarism. So I ended with a C.
This class is def. the hardest of bus. core. Grading depends on your TA, so go to their office hours as much as you can. This will help you as you learn what your TA wants in the essays, which will help your grade tremendously. Though the class is hard, I would say the material is very applicable in the real-world. All-in-all, just gotta do it.
Beehler is one of the most difficult professors for business majors. He expects too much from his students and even regrades essays. So do not expect to do well in his course even with trying. The best you can pull off is a C, which tends to be the common grade. He also gives random quizzes so attendance is mandatory.
I don't know what these whiners are complaining about on here, a "C" grade is average by definition. You can get a good grade like I did if you aren't' lazy or a plagiarist like I know some of the students in the class were. He does enforce high standards, but my writing also did improve and I actually learned some important things.
Essentially another English class but I learned a lot from this class. However, this is a grade deflation class so don't expect to get an A unless you try 100%!!
Horrible teacher disrespects women never go to his office hours alone he is a psycho !! He mocks students for asking question and there is know way to get an A with impossible grading standards. He should be fired the most unprofessional teacher ar UCR!!
Go. To. Office. Hours. Seriously, it will help you so much!! He is definitely a tough grader and do not expect to get an A unless you are sitting in the front taking notes and starting your essays two weeks early. Not a bad prof, just wouldn't take him again.
I wish UCR knew better to hire professors who motivate students to do better in class. Apparently this professor designs his class so that NO student will ever be successful in his/ her attempt and raise your hand if you've been accused of plagiarism by this professor even though you didn't. He has absolutely no regard for his students.
By the far the worst professor I have ever taken. He speaks as if he's better than everyone else and some of his lectures makes him seem like he's sexist. Very tough grader as well. I don't ever want to take another class with him
Overall, the class wasn't that hard, it's just time consuming. He assigns 4 papers but if you work on them ahead of time and go to your TA's office hours you will be fine. The majority of the quizzes and the midterm are based on his lectures, so it's important to attend class.
Honestly, do not take! He is such a hard grader despite his praising remarks when checking your drafts. He is very boring and just overall the worst. He is not helpful when it comes to bettering your writing skills and you leave the class feeling like a terrible writer. :(
Great professor, although he is a very tough grader. He offers great feedback when returning essays and is available during office hours if you need any further help.
Have multiple opportunities
This professor is very rude and he gives so much work. He does not accept late work and gives pop quizzes. He graded hard on the essays and expects you to go see him in office hours. By far one of the worst professors at UCR. Do not recommend taking his class.
ENGL004 is a tough class. This professor was strict but gave fantastic feedback. Very great tips and suggestions in office hours and in class. He's tough on grading but I got 3 A's and 1 B on the essays that he graded purely from the suggestions he gave in class. If you want to be prepped well, take this professor. Strict but gives good feedback.
Very awful professor. He does not care about his students. Took him during Fall and he was very rude. Would not recommend taking this professor.
This professor thinks that he knows everything being head chair of the English department. He is very unhelpful and a tough grader. Do not expect to ever get an A on a paper he grades all students like if we were pros in English. He tells you to buy stupid books that you don't even use. This professor makes you feel like you do not write good.
He assigned a lot of readings and he is such a hard professor. Being your first year would not recommend. You will most likely fails in his class because he gives you a lot of quizzes and he calls you out if you didn't read. BEWARE
A tough grader but if you show up to his office hours youll surely do fine on the essays.
Worst Professor ever. He grades really hard and expects you to go to office hours. He makes you purchase all these books and use them like twice all quarter.
Get ready to write a lot of essays. He grades really hard and expects students to go to office hours. He fails all his students on the essays making it so hard for students to pass ENGLISH.
Strict professor. He is the head of the English department so he thinks he knows everything. He is the worst professor at UCR
Get ready to write a lot of essays. Grades super hard.
This professor, as head of the English department, acts as though he knows everything. He is very unhelpful and a tough grader, making it nearly impossible to earn an A on any paper. He grades students as if we were professionals in English. His feedback makes you feel like your writing is inadequate.
Do not take this professor if you want to fail ENGLISH. He is a tough grader and super rude to his students. He did not help with essays he makes you go ask the ARC instead of him giving you feedback.
Worst professor. He does not teach good and gives you hard assignments.
Although they're great at giving feedback 1 on 1 in my opinion he's too strict and is not very good at explaining for the class as he tends to go off topic a lot and expects more than what he teaches. Overall I would avoid this professor unless you favor going to office hours frequently during your free time good luck ;)
Took his summer course and he made it hard. He graded all assignments very strict through the book. MLA is important here. Do not take this professor.
Took him over summer and his class was challenging.
Very strict grader on essays. He has very particular wants but is not very clear about it. He failed my paper and when I followed up about it, he responded in a very condescending manner and made me feel like I was dumb. Would not recommend if English is not your strong suit. It's his way or the high way.
Professor Beehler is not a great professor. He is very strict since he is department chair. He expects students to get great scores on essays that are very hard topics. He wants students to attend office hours in order to pass his class. He is by far one of the worst professors here.
He is bad at teaching, yet grades really strictly and does not give good explanations. Go not take his class.
Class was very hard. Professor Beehler has you buy books we do not really use ever. He is the only professor that makes it required to attend office hours if you want to increase your grade.
avoid at all costs. very questionable views and unclear subjective grading. almost any other professor would be better.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM. He does not give any good feedback on your essays and only marks them without explanation so you dont even know what is wrong. He just assigns work and barley even teaches. If you want any feedback you have to go to his office hours and just for him to not really help at all but just criticize your mistakes.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT TO FAIL. He is not structured and is very rude to his students. He marks students for simple things and expects you to go to office hours if you want a better grade just to make you feel bad about your writing.
Marked me down for simple errors on an essay. I WOULD NEVER TAKE HIM.
Not very helpful, or informative. Not clear with directions
Do not take his class. His grading is absolutely terrible, marks down on simple things. To get a better grade you need to rely on his office hours in which he gives you little to no feedback. Reported me to the council for using grammerly, i used resource to fix any mistakes made on the essay. I now am restricted for the entire year.
Overall, he's okay, but pretty apathetic and stern. Textbooks are definitely required. There are lots of pop quizzes and essays. He is a very tough grader. In order to potentially succeed in his class, you must attend his office hours to ensure that your essays are in good shape, because make-up work for any other assignment is NOT ACCEPTED.
