cool class, easy A if you read!
this dude rocks. i've heard that you can actually go drinking with him after the field trip to study aquatic life forms and fossils.
hard class- hard grader. Unhelpful. I don't know about his other classes but if you know what's good for ya- DONT TAKE THIS ONE!
Geology 101 was pretty tough. Lots of reading but it's actually pretty interesting stuff. The 101L class was a lot of fun. It's a lot easier and Paul is a lot of fun.
Best Teacher ever. He is a big Russian who gets so exicited about the subject materals he sweats through his shirt and his tie gets wet. Take every class of his you can, you will not regret it.
this is one russian guy that gets you really thinking about life if you like to know where your roots are from take this class take good notes and you'll be on the way to good fortune book didnt cost much plus his got hilarous videos about DINOSAURS!
This is a very snazy professor. He gets so into what he's teaching, and has personally visited some of the places he talks about. He's very easy to talk to. Class assignments include map worksheets, one project, and midterms, a breeze if you ask me.
He's...alright, but pretty much the only thing I didn't like about him was that he get's sidetracked a lot and starts rambling about something that's not really necessary.
Pasha was awesome. The fossils were amazing.
He is a fabulous teacher. He makes the subject matter fun and interesting. The tests are a breeze if you read. He's a very nice guy.
I took Prof. Belasky for Geol 101 & 101L- He's a great teacher! I'd take his class over anyones- Very interested in what he teaches, and tells stories about the places he's been. Gives good notes, and the tests are clear cut. I highly recommend him for any Geology class!!
Belasky deffinitely has a lot of knowledge. In fact i'd give him an A plus for his knowledge in his subject material. But fact is, he sucks as a teacher. He continuously goes off topic and rambles about things no one is interested in. His grading is hard and he even goes on to test you about things he hasn't lectured on. His teaching style is hell!
this is the one class where i can honestly say that if you put in the effort, you'll get the result you want. great class for those of us who don't enjoy science. there's less material to remember compared with bio or chem. and belasky seems really into what he's teaching which helps.
Belasky was a really cool guy and and as long as you put a little bit of effort, he will reward you for it.
I can't say enough good things about Prof. Belasky. I'm not good at the sciences, but he made it clear and simple enough for me to learn it. He also gives fair tests and keeps you interested. He's great.
Belasky is a really great teacher. He presents materials using different methods so everyone in the class can understand. He is approachable and friendly. He also has a good sense of humor.

Great class. very fun and interesting.
Prof. B is a good teacher, but he does talk ALOT so it can get pretty boring. But if anything is unclear or you need help, he will definately help you. If you do your work and come to class, its a gauranteed A.
This is tough to say because he's a nice guy and smart too. He has high expectations, and if you botch any one part of the class you'll get a lower grade. You are graded by your peers too so if you're not a great speaker, watch out. Long, long lectures, and he thinks you'll recall later who the Sheik of Iran was in the year 400.Good stories though!
Better study. you will learn a lot.
He is very knowlegable. His test could be tough. But you actually learn thing in this class. Although he doesn't take roll. But attendence will highly effect your grade. Go to class, pay attention to what is he saying, take good notes. You will be getting A.
I took Oceanography, expecting the course to be about well Oceanograhpy. He made the majority of the class about geography. When it finally came to actual marine life we were given a 15 page handout and told to "review it since it's boring." Horrible teacher! He still uses hard to read overheads!
Mid-way through classes, I would say to take this class. It is hard, interestting for some facts. Mr. Belasky is very clear on lectures and does not copy the textbook. Missing a lecture in this class is not a good idea. All in all, he is one of best professors here.
In rating Mr. Belasky, I have to give him good ratings; he is very clear on lectures, thorough, and intelligent. The class material is very hard unless you have a real interest in subject. Take this class if you like challenges.
Prof. Belasky has to be one of my favorite teachers of all-time. His lectures can be boring sometimes and he goes off topic fairly often, but He is extremely knowledged and he is very understanding. All you have to do is ask and he will help you till you understand the material. Make sure you show up in class and take good notes.
Nice teacher, and so cool, just talk too much about "Russia" where he from!
Excellent course and professor for those with an interest in the world and the places that comprise it; Mr. Belasky is very knowledgable and extremely worldly. There is much to be learned from his lectures, so be sure to attend -- he knows his stuff.
Lectures, Textbook, Study guides, and Exams "Do Not" coincide with each other. Inconsistancies are too numerous and incrediable, no set class standard, the bar raises and lowers daily. Good luck with knowing what your grade is going to be...Scary teacher to trust your grade and future with.
I actually found this class fun and interesting. TONS of movies. The labs are INCREDIBLY difficult (luckily i had hella smart partners) and choose wisely your first day of lab. you're stuck with those people. The only way you'll get a good grade is by READING your book and keeping up w/it. There were only like 2-3 A's per midterm in my class.
Dr. Belasky is very nice and makes Oceanography very interesting, although we learned more about Geology. There are a lot of lectures, so don't miss a class since the quizzes and midterms are mostly based off of those. Also there is a field trip on a ship that was pretty cool to do. Overall, he's easy as long as you come to class & take good notes.
His class is boring. His tests are hard but if you study then you get what you deserve. The field trip on the boat was hella ghetto but it was okay. This class is worth taking. He is a good teacher.
MUST attend all lectures if you want to do well on his tests. Do not rely on the book.
i like this teacher, i took his lecture class and the lab, but labs are hard. if u attending every lecture, u will do good on midterms. he also talks a lot about where he is from, which is Russia..he speaks russian, like me...but overall i recomend you to take him...
He's hot, but...his tests are really hard..i dont think they have anything to do with each other..but yeah..
This class (Paleotology) isn't easy. His midterms are pretty tough, but if you score pretty well on them, you should be ok. Otherwise, small quizes here and there, one field trip for 10% of your grade. He does talk too much about how there is no God, and creationalists are wrong throughout the semester. Just go to his lectures and youll be fine.
Liked very much. He is very into the subjects that he teaches, but somtimes he is a little too political. The mid terms can be a little hard but if you show up, do the maps, and read the book you should be fine.
Go to every class, pay attention to the lectures, do your map exercises, and take him very seriously about studying for the midterms and final. His exams aren't "hard" unless if you really didn't study nor pay attention. You paid for the textbook, so READ IT! You probably don't know as much as you think you do, so the textbook will help you a lot.
I love Prof. Belasky's class. He's very kind and always helpful. His lecturse do get boring, but as long as you take good notes I don't see how you can fail his class. He likes to go on tangents, but they're interesting and are science related. Plus, there's a field trip on a fishing boat that is extremely AWESOME. It's my favorite class! :)
I took the hybrid class, meaning I rarely saw Prof Belasky because he was in charge of the online portion. However, I would say taking the hybrid class is the best bet for non-earth science majors. The tests were okay, the scores are curved, and if you keep up with the online assignments you should get a good grade in that portion of the class.
Brilliant! Love his passion for all geology subjects. Best professor I've had at Ohlone.
I have an A. Exam graded on a curve. Avg Score is the boundary btwn B- and C+. So getting a B or a C is very easy. However, getting an A is pretty hard. You learn the whole world map in this class. Cities, rivers, mountains... on and on. Belasky is a very intelligent professor but he should honestly be teaching at Berkeley... not here. Hard class.
Easily one of the best teachers on campus. He loves the subject, and it really shows in his lectures. Yes, he expects a lot from his students, so be prepared to work in his class. Especially if you're in the lab class. Just a tip: form a study group. It really helped me.
Professor Belasky is really intelligent and knowledgeable in many subjects, but he tends to go off on tangents and his lectures feel like they drone on for hours at times. He spends a ridiculously long time talking about Russia.
A teacher that shows great passion and knowledge in this subject. He will expect something from his students so be responsible! Geting an A isn't that hard, just follow the instructions and do what's on the schedule. He is extremely helpful and is willing to answer questions.
Belasky is a pretty cool dude. You can just tell that his passion for science's is very high through his lectures (though they can be very boring). He's willing to help you anyway he can, as long as you ask him ahead of time. The test are a little hard. The only way you can fail is if you don't go to lecture, and or, fail to study the material.
The exams are hard but if you read the notes you should be able to get a B. He goes on tangents a lot and little extra credit is given. our class went from around 35 to ~10 people. Many dropped, and he warns you about it already but if you read the notes and do a quick read of the text book you should be fine!
I LOVED HIS CLASS! I took Geography104-World's Nations last semester, and got an A. If you come to the majority of your classes and if you actually pay attention, youll do fine. I loved his passion, his stories were so interesting and I really enjoyed his class. He offered a lot of extra credit too, which was amazing!:)
First off... This is the second of his classes I have taken and I REALLY enjoyed both of them. Getting an A is really easy to accomplish: just do EXACTLY what he tells you to and you will do fine. Tests are Scantron/multiple choice but can be worded weird so just study your notes and go to class.
Dr. Belasky's great. He's very helpful if you email him or speak to him in person. He's also a supporter of athletes, in case you need to do a makeup exam, etc. His lectures are easy to engage in, and so are the videos he shows, however, he does get mad if you sleep during the video! There's also a class field trip that is a part of your grade.
I have taken two classes with Mr. Belasky and have really enjoyed them both and I walked away knowing more about the topics we learned. I love his lectures because he spends EVERY minute to teach you about something, including his personal experiences, which are always interesting. He has seen a lot in his years and knows a little about everything!
I took his oceanography class during my last semester, and I wish I had taken more of his classes. His lectures are very interesting, though sometimes he gets sidetracked (once he tried to explain russian bear circus). Not recommended if you like to coast by, or if you don't like straight lecture (very little discussion). One of the best at Ohlone!
I thought this class would be much easier than it is. I studied really hard, read the book and lecture notes and still do not do well. I'm surprised at the good ratings I've read on here.
He's a former UCLA professor and teaches the class like a university professor. The only negative I can think of is that my lab partners were idiots. His lectures are interesting, he's very knowledgeable about what's he's teaching, and he's very passionate about science. Don't take his classes if you won't be paying attention.
Cool professor and interesting class. Material can definitely be a bit hard with as many facts as there are to remember, however, if you take good notes and study well, you should do fine.
I took his Paleontology class and lab and they were pretty interesting. His class is mainly lectures with ppts and some videos. He gives two midterms and a finals and quizes on videos. The professor himself isn't too hard but not easy either, I'd say he seems hard cause the subject itself is hard. But his classes are very interesting and fun.
Belasky is a super nice Russian man and a guy who has amazing stories about his very interesting life BUT he sure knows how to rant forever and to go off on tangents about things that don't have anything to do with his class. It was difficult to keep up, and difficult to stay awake. Be aware of this going in to Oceanography!
He tends to ramble and go on tangents. Lectures can be difficult to follow (especially at the beginning). Curriculum itself isn't too difficult, but the test questions can be tricky. Can get confused at times. He ran my scantron under the wrong version and I had to be aggressive and explain it to him 10 times for him to understand/change my grade.
He shows A LOT of videos, so it makes the class very boring. I received a low grade on my first test & he treated me horrible afterwards. The class involves some math, but if you go over the notes you should be fine. He asks to memorize a Geologic Time Scale, even though the tests are all about dates. I don't recommend this class at all.
Highly recommend his Paleontology class! He makes his lectures very interesting and relevant by adding in his own life experiences and stories rather than just constantly talking at you. He obviously cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Come to class, take notes, pay attention & you'll do fine.
Very interesting to listen to, you can tell he is very passionate about this topic. Luckily, I got an A but only because I studied hard. He'll do unannounced quizzes though, so make sure to attend. And TAKE NOTES, TAKE NOTES, TAKE NOTES. If you take good notes, you will do good in this class. And also don't be afraid to ask him questions.
I took paleontology and dinos at Ohlone Colllege in the early afternoon. Let me tell you this guy is inspirational. You can see the passion for his field and craft in his eyes. I loved every minute of this class. He takes learning seriously so this class isn't for slackers. He takes it personally if you underperform and it drove me to do my best.
Belasky was habitually late, sacrificed our learning time to go on off-topic tangents, and blamed the class for his mistakes, making it hard to respect as a professor. His labs were confusing and disorganized and he rarely gave us the resources needed to complete our work without being prompted. Really disappointed with my experience in his class.
A great professor with a broad knowledge in history, culture, and modern events. I really enjoyed this class and learned a lot of world geography and culture.
Geog of the world. Very interesting class. Extremely knowledgeable prof. Take good notes. Tests are maps based on in-class and homework exercises and multiple choice. Study the maps and your notes the most and you will do really well. Reading the book is helpful but skimming it with really good class notes is fine too. I recommend him. Soo smart.
Extremely knowledgeable prof. Want to learn about the world? Take him. Read the book but MOST IMPORTANTLY Take notes Take notes and Take notes. Ask questions because he's very thorough. Talks for days but very interesting. Study maps super important. Maps + notes + reading A+
Left the entire class in the pouring rain for an hour waiting for him to arrive for a field trip, he never showed up. His emails are sent out at most one day before class, he reuses his emailsassignments from previous years, so numerous revisions were made. Very little teacher contact, late responses, and his answers to the midterm were not correc
there was a field trip to Monterey and first of all it was raining, and he was making us wait an hour, then finally sends an email saying that the field trip has been cancelled.
His lectures are really well written and interesting, but his quizzes and tests are beyond DIFFICULT. On quizzes, he allows you to use your notes, so take good ones. His study guides for exams are not very well organized. So read, read, read! He one time wrote on the back of my quiz, "this is awful." --- so rude and uncalled for.
Okay... this class was so unexpected. The lectures are amazing, filled with information that is intriguing. I seriously loved learning the origin and evolution of life. BUT TESTS AND QUIZZES ARE RIDICULOUSLY HARD. IT IS UNCALLED FOR. He even understands the class is taken for credit. It's as if you're majoring in this section..... DON'T. TAKE. IT.
Dr Belasky is a great professor. His lectures are interesting, but a lot of the material that you find on exams isn't covered in his lectures. You will have to read A LOT if you want at least a B. This is the hardest class I have taken at Ohlone since my 2 years here.
He's a really specific grader, even with notes on quizzes DIRECTLY from lecture, he won't give full points. His grading criteria is not clear. He does know what he is talking about though, just isn't good at explaining it, and goes off on lots of tangents. He talks about Russia A LOT (that's where he's from).
Belasky clearly knows his stuff, his lectures are enjoyable & he's definitely a good guy. But it's time he ups his game. I wish he gets organised, dials back the tangents, and doesn't waste class time on little stuff. I agree with the other student that "a lot of the material on exams isn't even in his lectures". He could be SOOOO much better.
I waited until the last day of class to write this review. DO NOT take this class. You take it and you're going to regret listening to this review. Quizzes and Tests are seriously so hard. You can try your hardest and you still probably still will fall short. This class will only damage your GPA. I have no advice for you, just don't.
His lectures are pretty interesting but he is easily sidetracked. Tests and quizzes are extremely hard and HE DOESN'T GIVE OUT REVIEWS before tests and finals. So you are basically on your own to study for them. If you read the textbook from cover to cover and maybe you will get a A, but most likely you will end up with a B.
The most interesting class I have probably ever taken in my life! He knows everything about the world and it's amazing. It does help to have some geographic literacy from the beginning, but the map exercises that he gives out every few weeks are super helpful for the learning process. He's also always willing to help and answer students' questions.
I had him as a hybrid class. Lecture was on line and you have to attend lab by another professor. The lecture was difficult for me and fellow students agree that taking the class in person would most likely get a better grade. I got an A in lecture and a D in Lab. Final grade is a C.
Very informative teacher, clearly passionate about the subject! However, the class itself is SO difficult. The class now has about 15 people max. Labs are extremely difficult. Prepare to read - the tests all come from the book - the lectures are just to cover the labs. Grading scale is whack - but class is worth it!
One of the brightest professors ever! If you do the work and want to learn getting an A is not a problem. Awesome opportunity to learn about our planet! So fun I wish I had time to take it again...
Great lecturer. Doesn't use textbook much, gives handouts of material and most of information on quizzes is from lecture. Class is very difficult but he answers any questions you may have. Still isnt good at working out and showing word and number problems. You really can't miss a single day of this class if you want to pass.
He missed first two weeks of the class, first thing he did when he comes back is to give us a midterm with 80 questions. gives inaccurate study guides that's total misleading you from the really questions. My advise is don't take the class
Paul was the best teacher. He was so nice and his lectures were awesome. I learn by storytelling and I loved his stories. Awesome guy.
Out of all the classes I have taken at Ohlone, this is the worst and hardest. Calculus, physics and accounting were all way easier than this. The labs are extremely hard, the content is extremely boring and I regret taking this class every day. Take another lab to save yourself the time. DO NOT TAKE THIS FAIR WARNING.
Absolutely terrible. Highest grade on the midterm was a 74% percent with the average being an F and he sends an announcement saying the class sucks basically? obviously hes doing something wrong if 2 of the 22 students passed an 80 question test... terrible class.
Prof Belasky is a nice guy, but his class is very difficult. I took his class for GE, and if you're not 100% interested in Oceanography, you will not do very well. He is easily distracted during lectures and does not explain things very well. Grade is heavily based off of 2 midterms and 1 final.
Professor is knowledgeable about subject, but often goes on tangents of unrelated topics. Because of this, we did not cover all of the needed material for the exams and are expected to do extra reading. Missing class is not an option either because all of his power points are not online. If you want to pass, you need to put in a lot of effort.
I recommend you stay away from this class and Paul in general, all his classes are trash. He gives quizzes on movies that have nothing to do with dinosaurs. On top of that the only good movie that we watch was on a frozen mammoth and he didnt let us finish it. His test are 80+ questions, the study guide is misleading and like to talk about Russia.
Professor Belasky is a very knowledgeable professor but with that said you really have to pay attention, his midterms and finals are 80 plus questions and they are very difficult. The lab in my opinion is the hardest part about his class because he doesn't go over the lab much at all. He more goes over the lectures. His class is very difficult.
Read the text! If you read and pay attention during the lectures and lab, the tests and quizzes are very manageable. Exams are long, but the questions are not hard. Labs are a bit tough, so pay attention to prelab lecture. Transition to remote instruction was rough at first, but was very smooth for the rest of the semester. He's a great professor!
Professor Belasky is definitely a tough grader but it doesn't mean the class is impossible. As long as you participate in lecture and lab, this class is manageable. Taking notes and doing readings are mandatory!
I took this class my first ever semester at Ohlone (I transferred out already), but this he is still one of the hardest professors I have ever taken in my whole college experience. I was a pretty good student, but I just could not do well in his class for the life of me. He did offer extra credit which I did take advantage of.
Honestly, this class was interesting but NOT suited for remote learning in my opinion. Prof. Belasky did not cover a lot of information on the midterms/ final so be prepared to read A LOT from the textbook to prepare for tests. I didn't like how little he covered in his lectures and additionally, it was a hybrid class meaning only 1 lecture a week.
Dr. Belasky is a nice guy. He goes on different side tangents in His lecture be his lecture are prey through. Do the reading and the My Pearson Lab, and youll be fine.
Paul Belasky is one of the WORST professors I've ever had. He yelled at me multiple times for things like buying the wrong textbook and asking a question he thought he had answered before. He assigns a lot of reading and I was unable to finish his tests because they were too long and didn't get enough time. His tests do NOT reflect the book. 1/10
he went on a lot of tangent in the class, he never truly "taught" - just showed us videos. It seemed like he cared about our well-being. he isn't a monster. i just would never take him again as he makes it seem like he puts effort into teaching when he doesn't. The labs are administered with little to no assistance.
Incredibly rude, and messy teaching style. Made virtual learning difficult. Lots of work, not enough time to complete. Prepare to teach yourself most of the material.
Class originally had in person labs; but was moved fully online before semester started. He did not adapt throughout the entire semester. Sloppy lectures and terrible at teaching material. Labs were poorly planned and poorly executed; very harsh grader considering his guidelines were very unclear. Lot of guesswork and hoping for the best.
Took geology and oceanography and absolutely loved both. Loved his insight on the material and seemed relatively passionate about everything we worked on. The work load was never too heavy and was easy enough. Shoutout Belasky Fr.
Professor Belasky: Nice teacher, thorough in his lectures, pauses for questions also has office hours. Coursework: LOTS OF READING, has a lot of slides that you NEED to attend class for otherwise your busted because they are only images with 0 explanations. HW is a journal once every 2 weeks because the readings and amount of questions are a lot.
He is not tech savvy whatsoever. I have an online class with him where we meet once a week via zoom. The class is constantly waiting around for him to figure out how to do things like put us in breakout rooms. Half the class is essentially waiting around doing nothing and the other half is material dense. Do not take for GE its hard.
Science had never been a weak subject for me until I took this class+lab. His lectures are extremely long and boring. Don't know what he was saying half of the time. Extremely harsh grader, and insufferable. PLEASE listen to all these reviews because he's the worst science professor at ohlone. take someone else!
Comes ready to have a good time and to teach. You will really feel like you're learning from one of the greats(SPAA), because you will be. Taken every single course he offered. Come ready to learn, always show up, and have some patience. There are 3 people who have prepared me for the world; Prof. Belasky sits right next to Prof. Rahman on that.
All the people on here not liking Belasky are straight up loosers minus an o. Professor Belasky is legit the bees knees. Fair grader, amazing lecturer. Has a refined slide deck and presents the best material. You would never learn about snowball earth, or about the nitty gritty story behind the burning of the library of Alexandria w/o Prof. Belasky
- his lectures are long so be prepared + take notes - not a lot of assignments so getting a bad grade on 1 or 2 can jack you up for the rest of the semester - the exams are lowkey hard and timed so lock in fr fr - his grading system is super curved tho which is good. i ended with an 88% but it was still considered an A
Belasky's classes take work, but the complaints are people salty about their grades. The exams can be very dense but it is a STEM course, it's supposed to be challenging. He has tutoring options for the class so that is on students for not utilzing it.
Nice professor but somewhat tough grader. As long as you read the textbook and attend lectures you will be good.
Professor Belasky is knowledgeable, but his classes can be challenging. Attend lectures, do readings, and use resources like unstuckstudy to stay on top of the material. The labs are tough, so be prepared.
