He posts lecture notes on-line before lecture. He knows his materials very well, so he goes a bit fast. Just understanding hw material doesn't guarentee an "A" or "B". Make sure you understand everything and know it depth. His class is

Bergin is everything I don't want to be when I grow up. He's is the boring among the boring.
Personally, the lecture notes weren't very helpful to me. I would walk out of the class confused and then read the book and understand everything. Homework can be difficult unless you have a good TA. Flexible grading policy. Knows material well.
Such a boring class, but not too hard. Organized lectures, but it's more about reading the powerpoints that the book auther provides and not teaching the class his own way.
Boring lectures, ridiculous tests. Overall, not a very effective lecturer. Too much emphasis on which variables go up or down!
The material is easy to understand if you follow along with lecture notes. He leaves blanks so you can fill in as you listen which makes lecture understandable and less boring. The book is a good resource for homework although some of it is similar to the examples in lecture. Show up to class, understand the homework and the class will not be bad.
This is a pretty hard class, you definitely have to pay attention in class and do the homework. It's pretty hard to do that though considering the fact that's he's really boring. The powerpoint slides come from the book, so there's really no need to read the book as well.
Great class, but he uses slides from the publisher. You don't need to buy the book, basically. Spends a lot of time going over material if you ask him to.
Not a great class, he is very knowledgeable, but fails to transmit his knowledge effectively. I didn't see a connection between the tests and his lectures. Lectures and Homeworks fail to prepare you for his test...simply put:pray for good luck
The lecture slides are extremely clear and detailed, goes over anything and everything, but content is somewhat difficult.
hard class, lectures are boring, My TA graded the hw too harsh, recieving a CHECK on all of them, and my friend who we worked compresensively on it who had a different TA recieved a CHECK +, MIDterms and FInal were just too difficult, had no clue what i was really doing on the final.
easy class, very clear ad concise lecture slides. He gets to the main points, and is relatively helpful if you ask questions. Also very helpful in office hours
Hard, boring class -- exams are set up to make you score really low if you make any errors. They consist of several questions, all of which require you to answer more questions based on your answers to the earlier parts of the problems. Get the early part wrong, no partial credit on the rest of the problem. Just a heads up...
This class was really interesting but Bergin made the class harder than I thought. The powerpoint slides weren't that helpful and it seems no matter how much I studied, it didn't help. I read the book, did the hw, and look at his slides, what more does he want? Anyways its over and I thank goodness I'm not a major in economics and only a minor.
He takes no interest whatsoever in his students. I went to ask him for help with the class only to be sent away saying "I can't make exceptions for individual students, drop the class or get a tutor" and all i wanted to do was set up an appointment because i had a class during his office hours. Worst teacher of my life, learn it from the TA's!
This professor is very prepared for lecture. The subject matter is dry, but he does try to relate it to the students. The only problem I had in the course was that I thought I knew the material 100% yet I barely passed the exams. I think the high quality of his lectures made me too confident in the material-study regardless!
Tests are hard, you need to understand the concepts and be able to interpret them, not just memorize what he wrote in lecture. There is a lot of material. Teacher is ultra clear in his lectures and cares a lot about the material. The TA explained everything in laymans terms, thats what saved me. Great class and professor, but very hard tests.
Professor Bergin is highly organized when it comes to covering material. He sticks by the textbook (we used Mankiw) and the publisher's slides and has a very logical progression of material. He also makes an effort to make the material interesting. This will be an easy class if you do the homeworks (which are not very long and which the TA's help y
Inadequate instructor. Not thorough, nor comprehensive. Glosses over lecture points with out depth. Insulting to student questions. Arrogant and non approachable. Insufficient communication. Avoid this professor . Carries a negative reputation.
Clear Professor, Easy Class, tests very straightforward. Don't know why other people had problems with him. Easy A Very approachable and helpful towards questions
Awesome professor teaching an awesome class. Expects in depth comprehension of subject matter for tests, which is good for all but the laziest people. Relates it'l ecn to pressing issues of today and tries to get students to apply the model learned analytically. Be sure to not only memorize the models, but to understand how and why things happen.
It was definitely a pleasure sitting through Professor Bergin's lectures. He explains Economics like no other. He gets you to not memorize concepts, but to understand them. I recommend it for anyone taking their first upper division Economics class!
He is one of the best professors in Davis. If you attend lecture and do all your homework, there is no way you can fail this course. Highly recommended!
poor instruction. people doze off in class because it's so boring. hardly anyone much comes and his tests are not relevant.
Bergin was one of the best econ professors i have had in UCDavis. His lectures are extremely clear. He oulines (in detail) the important topics in the course. There will never be a question on the homework or the exams that you can not find in his lecture notes--which by the way are posted online!Attendence, although recommended, is not necessary.
Useful to analyze exchange rate and the relationships btwn countries. Go to his lecture and write yourself even though the notes he use in class will post online because you will see questions on exams that only talked about in class.
Not the most entertaining guy, but straightforward and clear. Subject material was very interesting, you do learn a lot, and the book is very well done (Feenstra is the MAN). Posts the slides online and honestly I only went to 1/2 the lectures and found myself with an A.
This class was so DIFFICULT! the exams were ridiculously detailed, and solely depended on one's ability to memorize a graph and all the million different ways it can be changed. and how those changes affect other things. etc. take a different prof. the textbook is very helpful and clear though, but bergin expects too much out of his students.
The midterm was ok, but the final was hard. He give us practice which was helpful from past class, but our final exam format was very different than previous class (Lots of MC question!)
Class is a bit dry, but professor is clear in lectures. Lots of graphs and analysis of the different possible cases; econ crises and history. Somewhat easy midterm, but final can be quite challenging. Homework mostly recycled, and an int'l econ theory application essay is due at the end. Good class for int'l economic current events and analysis.
No need for textbook because lectures are very clear. I stopped going to class the second half of the quarter but he posts lecture slides online. Ended up with an A pretty easy class overall. Make sure to do all homework sets.
Attend his lectures, take notes, study notes and you'll be fine for Exams. Textbook reading only for additional info you dont understand but his lectures are SUPER organized (he writes them out).
One of the best professors at UCD, hands down! If you have the chance to take his class, do it! Very clear lectures, quizzes and exams are extremely similar to homework problems and examples in lecture, and you can tell he is very passionate about the subject matter. Bergin definitely made macro much easier to understand!
He teaches well, but he is not approachable in person. His midterms and final are just like the homework. However, the multiple choice conceptual questions are very confusing and can ruin your grade. Pop quizzes, drops the lowest. Study the homework and slides and you will do fine. Good curve.
Very good professor! Clear notes!
Very clear lecture notes. Past exams are very helpful to prepare for the midterms and final.
He takes no interest whatsoever in his students. I went to ask him for help with the class only to be sent away saying "I can't make exceptions for individual students, drop the class or get a tutor" and all i wanted to do was set up an appointment because i had a class during his office hours. Worst teacher of my life
Very nice and approachable. Super clear lectures. He posts all notes online. You honestly don't need to buy the book.
Bergin is part of elite economists at UC Davis. His consistency with the book and clear expectations from students, left no place to complain. I missed a few lectures but had access to his notes. Overall fair.
Very easy to approach. Super friendly. His lecture notes are very neat and clear. His tests are reasonable if you study well and think critically about the concepts covered in class. Would highly recommend.
2 Midterms, one final and homework. Homework is 15% of the grade while he weights the midterms and the final such that you get the highest score out of the three. Very good professor but tests are very difficult
Great professor. Explain everything clearly. He posts lecture notes and past exams online. Tests are really difficult.
Great lecturer. Notes are neat and clear. But the exams are extremely hard.
Great Professor. Clearly enjoys teaching and explains theoretical models really clearly so it is best to show up to class. Gives practice midterms closely related to midterms. Hw is similar to multiple choice in exam. GO TO DISCUSSION! They give tips and answers to the hw. Professor is interesting at lectures, so it isn't boring.
Tough grader. Tests are very hard. Homework not required
hard class i studied a lot but got a C-. but still a great professor. he posts all his notes on his website.
Super enthusiastic and passionate about what he teaches. I actually look forward to his lectures. Tests are difficult but his lectures make it worth it. Sometimes digresses and talks about current events. Overall entertaining, clear, super friendly and willing to answer questions. I'd take him again if it weren't for the tests.
The overall course grade will be computed using whichever of the following is highest: 1) 25% Midterm1 + 25% Midterm 2 + 40% Final + 10% Homework 2) 25% Midterm1 + 65% Final + 10% Homework 3) 25% Midterm 2 + 65% Final + 10% Homework 4) 90% Final + 10% Homework
Professor is friendly but the class is very difficult. Would recommend taking 101 with someone else.
This class is certainly challenging but it is very doable! Hw problems and past exam questions are very similar to the exam questions you'll see. The final is weighted very heavily in this class (40-90% based on your MT scores). Professor Bergins lectures are very clear and he is a very carring instructor. Overall, I recommend him!
The averages on his exams are somewhat low but there is a curve. HW is online & similar to MC on exams & he also posts old exams as practice. His class is pretty doable considering I prioritized other classes over his & still got decent grades on exams. I liked his lectures & went to all of them. Not a bad professor to take ecn101 with.
Felt like I learned a lot which was good. Tests are pretty tricky, filled with a good amount of curveballs compared to prior exams and hw's. Lectures are like watching the grass grow. Not a very friendly or approachable guy. All in all, not what you want but probably what you deserve.
This particular class with prof. Bergin is actually pretty good, but understandably not for everyone. If you're interested in exchange rates and money markets, take it with him since he explains these topics very clearly. He always reviews what he taught previously and discusses some recent articles. Overall, a solid professor and knowledgeable.
Bergin was a nice, nerdy, but slightly boring professor. class consisted of long monotonous lectures with rare jokes. final grades are curved and he takes the highest of (15% hmwrk+35%MT+50%final or 15%hmwrk+85% final) only 6 hmwrks. Know how to do homework problems, go to discussion, and try practice exams. easiest class of the 100 series so far.
Professor Pergin is an okay professor to take for ECN 101. His lectures are pretty dry, but the needed info is there. I honestly was failing for half the quarter, but I picked up my act for the final and ended having my final be worth 90%. Averages are hella low on exams, so the curve at the end of the quarter is huge. I got a 66% and it was a B+.
Hes really good at explaining topics. Make sure you understand the economic intuition behind everything cuz the tests will be based on that stuff and not just shifting curves on graphs. Read the textbook, make study guides and study well. Do the practice exams too, you can learn a lot from them.
All lecture and discussion notes posted online. The weird thing is he does not show you where he gets his notes from. I stumbled across an old UCD professor's(Jorda) slideshows from 2006 and funny enough it is identical to what he writes during lectures, yet he does not give the students these slideshows that have more indepth information. Lameo.
Professor Bergin is a nice guy, but I don't recommend taking his class because there are a lot of theory and memorizations. He gives very few examples, so that am quite confused about the homework and exams. His handwriting is hard to read as well. I would choose another econ professor for ECN 101.
Professor Bergin is truly one of the best professors on campus. He's someone who comes to class and does exactly what he's supposed to do at the highest level: teach. If you want to do well in this class, show up to lecture and ask questions. He's a very receptive and kind man who actually cares about the material and its applications. A true gem.
Took Bergin this quarter and wow his tests are difficult. Just to give you an idea, our class had a D average for the final. Do the homework, understand the concepts for his free response questions, and repeat till you can do it in your sleep.
He is a responsible professor. He posts his notes on canvas. He explains concepts clearly. The exams are not very easy, but if you listen to his lectures and TA's lectures, you will be fine. In addition, he is organized. His notes are organized. Overall, he is nice.
Homework problems, discussion problem sets, and practice exams are all great reference for current exams. Professor Bergin taught a very clear and organized class, really loved it. The readings are also a great source for learning and understanding! Exams are surely not easy, but definitely expectable. Great class, learned a lot, highly recommend.
Uses very beneficial grading scheme where he uses 4 different formulas and takes your highest percentage. Very clear lectures that are hand-written so it's very easy to take notes. He explains very clearly and exams are an appropriate mix of mcq and free response. All around solid professor and I can't think of any real nitpicks
The 4 grading schemes he uses is built to benefit your final grade. This quarter also saw a pretty nice curve. He's a good teacher, accessible outside of class and explains things well in lecture but his tests are HARD. That said, he pretty much admitted that if you stay above the median on the tests you'll get a B in the class.
Paul is a concise and knowledgable lecturer, but the material is difficult and tests are excruciating. 2 midterms, 1 final, online homework. He has four grading schemes and chooses the one which benefit you the most. The class is curved so my 85 was an A-. Seriously study the past tests and understand the underlying logic behind everything.
His lectures are somewhat dry, but he's a good professor. There's not much homework, but there is reading, but you don't need to do it to do well on the tests. He curves generously, so if you score around the median you'll get a B.
This course is not easy but you can get a good grade if you memorize all the mechanisms behind the theories. The professor is also very friendly and helpful.
He is the best professor ever that I met during my whole college life. He is full of kindness and empathy about his students. Do not hesitate to take his classes, you will learn a lot from him.
The best part about him is his curve and grading schemes. He weights your grades out of the 4 exams to get you the best possible grade and then still curves the class afterwards if necessary. He is definitely not approachable and he is a tough grader. He makes exams especially nerve raking because he is super scared of cheating so he assigns seats.
The exam questions are tough and require you to know course content in a lot of depth. I underestimated how hard the midterms would be and got a bad grade on the first one but Professor Bergin gives a few grading methods and the bad scores can be dropped if you do better in other exams. Reading the textbook along with lectures helped a lot.
Professor Bergin is one of the most empathetic professors I've ever had. The grade was based on homework, midterm, and final. Midterm is weighted to your benefit. He wrote out his notes on screen in lecture which made it easy to follow along. Everything you need to know is in the notes/textbook. Try to understand the material intuitively for exams.
His lectures are pretty organized and you are expected to learn a lot from him. The homework and exam will not be too difficult, similar to previous exams and questions during the discussion. 15 percent for homework, 35 percent for the midterm, and 50 percent for the final. A pretty nice professor!
Professor Bergin is awesome. He delivers extremely organized lectures and is very easy to approach after class. Professor Bergin mostly lectures on conceptual stuff, so make sure to go to discussion to practice numerical examples. His exams are very fair, and similar to the sample midterms he provides through canvas. 10/10 would reccommend.
He was okay. I did not like this class but he was overall fair. He is passionate about the topic though.
The lecture is so HARD to understand if you have no interest or strong background in currency, exchange rates, and interest rates. The short answers in the exam are less similar to the practice midterm. The lecture has much more sentence interpretation than math calculations. DON'T recommend it if you are not good at understanding complex concepts.
He is one of the best econ professors here at Davis. Clear and Concise. Take him if you want to do great, will do different curves and drop both midterms if it is beneficial to your grade.
Solid lectures and homework. Generous with curves and grading. Tests aren't too bad as long as you use the previous exam samples he gives out
He is a so nice professor, and the stuff is easy. Although the average grade for the midterm and final are low, we have a good curve!
i honestly found this class really difficult, since what he taught in class didn't necessarily correlate to the exams. the exams were really difficult, but if you pay good attention and really understand the theories behind what's going on it is totally doable. he's a nice guy.
One of the most passionate econ prof. Fair exams, similar to practice. Material is a bit hard at first but you get the hang of it. He also curves and gives his lecture notes. Just take him, you'll love him. Anyone who says negative things about him just didn't study and didn't care about the class.
There are few assignments, precise grading, and not too tricky.
he was really boring but if you used the practice exams it really helped for the 2 midterms. the final was also manageable. he curves. READ THE TEXT BOOK. it will help more than his lectures
Professor Bergin is a nice man but his notes are extremely confusing he mainly talks about the theoretical part of macro but to solve the problems and understand I went to office hours and tutor and the concepts were really enjoyable
He is alright. Go to lectures and you'll be set.
Very good grading system, he drops midterms if it benefits your grade, and final grade is curved. Midterm averages were 70s and final was low 60s. Content in class was ok, some topics more challenging than others. Practice exams are similar to actual exams.
Very kind professor! He records all of the lectures and posts important announcements well in advance. I really enjoyed learning about inflation and unemployment. One topic I think the professor could have explained better was the Solow Growth Model. Overall, I really enjoyed this class.
Even though I didn't receive a great grade (personal problems, no fault of the instructor), Professor Bergin is a really good macro professor. He explains theory really well and his midterms generally reflect the given practice exams. He uses a unique weighting scheme to give you the best possible grade. Would take one of his classes again.
Bergin is one of the most knowledgeable professors I've had. There is a very steep learning curve in his courses as he goes heavily into theory and does not lower this expectation in his homework and exams, but he is very open to answering questions and clearing up misconceptions. Difficult course but doable if you try
Terrible. He doesn't explain a lot of things in lecture and expect you to know everything. He test you on very details in class and it's so hard to remember all of them. I would not recommend take this class with him. My friend is literally the smartest person I know and he said this is the hardest class he ever took here in Davis. Don't take it!!
Tests are similar to sample exam, final was pretty difficult. Overall a manageable class if you put time into it.
good professor Phil Econ 2017 -
Works with students to give them best possible grade. Sample tests are similar to exams which makes it helpful when studying. His lectures were very organized, and I appreciate that he is passionate about the subject he teaches, makes it more enjoyable and easier to follow. Weekly homework, which was very short and helpful.
His sample exams are almost identical to his actual ones. His lectures were okay, but it is definitely not hard to do well in his class. Super nice too!
