Wonderful professor! Very intelligent, well-spoken, and makes lectures interesting. Plus he's hot, so he's easy on both the eyes and ears!
very helpful, interested in subject matter.
Just great. Lectures are interesting and easy to listen to, even when it's the last class after a 12 hour day and I'm exhausted. He's also my acaddemic advisor, and I've always found him accessible, friendly, and very helpful.
His lectures are great. Makes it clear. Emphasis readings also, because they are essential for the exams. However, his marking IS HORRIBLE. He likes to give lesser marks, may be because he wants to keep the marks on a curve. Unfortunately, he never makes it clear as to what it takes to get an A in the tests or the essay. 7 out of 10 from me.
One of the best courses I've taken at York University and one of the best professors I've had. He's really helpful and rewards those who work hard in his course with a good mark.
He is a GREAT prof ! During my semester , he gave us 10 topics of which 7 of them would be on the exam. Pretty much gave us the essay questions so we could prepare it for the final exam. His notes are simple and gets to the point. Not a boring prof, quite funny too.
Marks all this papers and exams on a bell curve, which punishes students who do well. Repeats his lectures over and over without noticing.
Doesn't even look at your essay when marking it... students who put an effort will not be rewarded, but thrown into the same category. Everyone gets the same mark and hes always late for class.
By FAR! The best Professor I have EVER EVER EVER HAD, IF YOU ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET INTO HIS CLASS DO SO!! His class is VERY informative and very clear..people expect to GET an EASY A because he's so approachable and friendly, YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD FOR YOUR GRADES, don't b mad because u don't get them handed to you! Work Hard and youll learn ALOT!
Bell curve marker
Great teacher, wish he had more classes!
Best teacher. Very up-to-date with his teachings
EASY A! LIKES TO HAVE DEBATES IN CLASS AND OPEN DISCUSSION...NEVER USED TEXTBOOK! OVERALL GOOD PROFESSOR!
Hard teacher...but knows his stuff like no other. Pay attention in his class, interact and you will do very well. Overall, my favorite Prof.
He keeps it interesting! The lecture was supposed to be 3 hours, he never went longer than an hour and a half! Not a bad marker and tries to make it as easy as possible on students! Attendance is key :) Overall, one of the best profs I had. I advise to take him especially in the summer!
Paul is the best! I don't think I've ever met a teacher in my entire life that has ever assisted students before tests or essays the way that Paul does. Not only does he practically tell us what exactly to study for, he also summarizes the readings and makes everything so crystal clear. He is very intellectual and interesting to listen to:)
amazing
My fave prof at York. Had him for 2 classes and I hope I can have him again. He is VERY helpful when you go for office hours.
He is a very good lecturer. However, the WORST professor to get into contact with. Doesn't respond to emails and isn't efficient in keeping meetings. Somewhat unprofessional outside the classroom.
He simplified complex materials. But his choice in reading materials was bland and confusing.
This guy was amazing. 25 percent of the grade was just attendance. Posts notes online, as well as gives you the exam online a week before the date. Although the topic is slightly boring.
Very helpful and respectful professor and a fair marker who is willing to help to make sure every student succeeds. Allows questions to be asked and answers all, not rushed. Knows the materials very well, explains it and also post it on moodle.
He is an amazing prof! Loved his course on policing. He is an easy marker. This course is definitely a recommendation.
Best and easier prof I have ever had. I took a 4th year course with him and he is easy and amazing. Hes lectures are interesting and clear. He is very understanding and he always gave extra to finish up assignments. He's very laid back and an easy marker. If you don't end up with an A in his class than you are just a slacker. Overall, he's awesome!
Lectures were never 3 hours longs, he reads off the ppt and clarifies points. Gives out exam 1 week before to study. Very nice prof, interesting course.
BEST PROF AT YORK. SUPER CHILL GUY. AMAZING TEACHER, CRISP POWERPOINT SLIDES WHICH HE POSTS and adds more detail in class. Told our class just to slide our Final Essay underneath his office door in McLaughlin, for people who needed more time after classes finished. A chunk of the mark is just attendance. Easy A. Love him
1 CON- YOU CAN NEVER REACH THIS GUY, he never responds to emails. Other than that- He never uses the textbook!!!!!!!!!!! its a lecture based course, great and interesting prof. Super easy, Best prof
This is the best prof at York. Very approachable, reasonable and down to earth human being
Thanks to him, I know what I want to do with my life. Paul is one of the Prof's I have ever had and if you get the chance to be in his class, take it! His lectures are amazing and his slides are even better. His exams are based on his lectures so dont miss them!
This guy is straight up the best prof i had throughout undergrad. He is very easy going. Most importantly, his classes are never boring, because he literally tells you everything you need to know, and is skillful in clarifying the concepts effectively. Highly recommend, and its an easy A. I only did 2-3 of the readings, only for the presentation.
Hands down the best freaking professor ever. Gives you the info you need and why you need it. So friendly likes to talk you as a friends rather then a student
He is the coolest prof ever.
I enjoyed this class very much. The professor is very knowledgeable, and eager to help.
Really enjoyed the class. Clear outline, interesting course. VERY easy-going and accommodating
Dr. Paul is an amazing professor and he is always willing to help students.
Loved him as a prof!!! Don't buy books just go to all lectures and take notes. He's good looking too haha
He is a good professor but you cannot get in contact with him when u need . He is not fair as well because he will not bother to look at the papers that students write. Simply, it is about quantity and not the quality for him. I would recommend to take this with a different professor.
Paul Brienza is an amazing prof. His information/lectures are very clear-cut & precise. Do not buy the textbook, instead refer to notes he posts online. Not good with responding to emails. I suggest talking to him before/after class. Easy to talk to when you get a hold of him. Willing to talk about grade/course concerns.
I had Prof. Brienza for HREQ 2010 and HREQ 3010. His exams are based on lectures only, and he gives the entire exam to you as a review so there are no surprises. Don't buy the books, just use your lecture notes. His lectures, beware, are very dry and monotone. His grading usually consists of 2 exams (MC, short answer, essay q) and 2 essays.
Amazing prof, amazing person. Very inviting and warm personality. VERY knowleagable on all topics and issues, not just Social Sciences . He definitely cares for his students and is rooting for everyone to do well. 10/10 would take a class with him again. He goes on and on in lectures but makes topics so easy to understand- explains them very well.
I loved this guy, he explained his lecturers so well .He is on point with what he teaches, caring prof .Always on time and easy to approach, hilarious too.I will take his class again.
I LOVE Paul Angelo Brienza. AMAZING professor. VERY easy going & always there for you when you need to talk to him. He lectures in a way where everyone understands what he's talking about. I can go on & on about how amazing he is & overall, I chose this professor for 3 of my courses in 3 years in a row. If you see his name, TAKE THAT COURSE.
Absolutely Amazing.
Monotone voice
Professor Brienza is the not only the best professor I have had, he is also an amazingly kind person. He goes out of his way to help his students and will also provide you with useful advice when it comes to graduate studies. His teaching style is simple and straight forward and unless you really dont show up, it is very hard not to do well.
Great class and professor brienza is amazing. Highly recommend
Amazing professor. So approachable and willing to spend time with you to understand the material. In addition I had him as my TA and he was absolutely amazing. So helpful and an easy marker but you do need to read. He breaks down the information allowing all students the time to understand the material being taught.
He is kind & approachable. Boring lectures, completely unresponsive by email even after York strike was over. Visano taught 1st semester and Brienza taught 2nd semester. Topics are given ahead of time for midterm exam essays. Brienza changed one midterm exam to take home essay. Very easy course. TA was very easy marker, got 100% on everything.
Had this professor during the second half of the course. Brienza's lectures were extremely dull compared to the professor we had for the first half of the course (Livy Visano). His slides had way too much text on it, and the text was so tiny that it was hard to see when sitting in the back. Also, Brienza does not reply to emails, which is annoying.
Paul is an amazing professor! Gets to the point and will always clear up any confusion you may have. The courses he teaches may sometimes not be as exciting but he really tries to make them interesting enough for the students. I wish I could have taken all his courses the last 4 years.
Paul is a brilliant academic who is very passionate about his studies. I definitely learned a lot in his lectures about human rights. On the other hand, I found it questionable how he would not answer emails, occasionally arrive late to class, and how he did not try to make his lectures interactive.
The material for his class is pretty easy, he gives you all the test and paper information ahead of time but his lectures can be a bit dry and he talks A LOT. His slides have really small font too so it's not very accessible. Overall though he's not too bad, just a bit dry sometimes.
AMAZING. Take him if you can.
Lectures based on PowerPoint but very informative. Tests and papers based on what we learnt in class and readings . Easy A!
Such an amazing Professor! amazing lectures, the way he explains are so full of details and presents the topics in such an interesting way that truly captures your attention! Amazing Person!
Amazing professor. Most straight forward tests Ive ever seen, he does not look to trick you just evaluate you on what he has taught you. His lectures are easy to follow along, he gives the perfect amount of information. So kind and speaks in a conversational manner during lecture, doesnt read off slides like some profs! Overall totally recommend.
Paul is an amazing prof! The course itself was very interesting, however, the PowerPoint slides were filled with text that was continuously too small to read and he was monotone every lecture. His tests are very straightforward and he reviews the test questions with you during lecture. He rarely replies to emails which is questionable.
Does not answer emails, does not give feedback, everyone in this class except like 10 people skipped. Many of the TAs were also super unorganized prob bc the prof. honestly this class was easy but a joke!!! no communication at all LOL like??? man told us the final exam was optional and would be based off our grade but didnt give us our grade
The course is super easy. But this prof is terrible. Crams lecture slides with so much its i possible to read. He also NEVER responds to emails, and communicates information terribly. Due to the pandemic he made the final optional, and said we would revive the grade we had at that moment, but never released our grades. Truly terrible, AVOID!
This prof is awful. Incredibly rude When you speak to him, and he ignores emails. Doesnt release your mark so you never actually know how youre doing. Tutorials are easy, but avoid this prof if you actually want to know how youre doing
One word - Rude. Doesnt reveal your marks, ignores emails, if you ask him a question hell ignore you. One time I walked up to ask him something after class and he looked at me, smiled, and walked out of the lecture hall. The class is super easy, but he should not be teaching.
He is a very very knowledgeable person. He talks A LOT. Would stop to catch his breath. But really important stuff. Not boring. Took HREQ 1010 and learnt A LOT.
He is one of the best profs I have so far gives you the exact exam questions beforehand no surprises easy A.
Paul is a really helpful professor. He posts exam questions online beforehand and also posts all lectures online.
No surprises- test and essay questions are given ahead of time so you always know what to expect. Sticks with the same test format for all of his courses. Never answers emails, so be prepared to get comfortable with your TA. Solid professor, never had a problem doing well in his classes.
2 exams and 2 essays , all 20% each attendance in tutorials 20% Gives exam beforehand. Exam is 5 concepts and 1 essay. Good marker. TA sarah/saren very nice and good marker. Would take again, easy content. 4 textbooks, but not necessary. Lectures have all the info for exams and essays. Goodluck!
He was an amazing professor, I had a lot of respect for him. It was honestly a pleasure to watch someone so educated and passionate about the topic of human rights and liberalism deliberate and lecture. Your worldview and philosophy will expand a lot in this course. He's also a bit of a history buff! :)
Saren was the best TA!!!! Easy marker and course content easy too!!!
He's not really accessible outside of lecture unfortunately. Lectures are really long. His TA's take a really long time to submit grades back to students. I did the bare minimum, barely showed up for lecture and tutorial and still managed to get a good mark, so it's possible to still to well if you don't wanna sit in a 3 hr lecture.
Dr. Brienza is a real gem at York University. If you have a chance to take his classes do it! His lectures are heavy, yes but they're clear and straight to the point. His exams are manageable with no surprises. He cares about his profession and students. Such an intelligent prof who really knows what their talking about
He was the only professor in my entire degree program that I actually liked. He is an intellectual but so down to earth at the same, a quality missing from many professors.
Amazing professor
Amazing professor, very informative, knows tons about history, and easy-going at the same time. I found the grading criteria to be super clear and if you pay attention in lectures, you essentially have all you need to obtain an easy A. I had him in first year and was really pleased to see I would have him again in my second year!
When we were forced back on campus, he was super accommodating to those who were unable to come in-person
Pretty good professor, talks a little fast and has way too much information on his slides but other than that he knows his stuff.
took him for HREQ1010 and it was a blast, 100% recommend him
Course was lecture heavy. He's nice but isn't really accessible outside of scheduled zoom meetings. He's also unorganized and doesn't give good feedback for assignments. He's a tough grader, for the last assignments in the course, he gave me a low mark with no feedback and when I reached out to him, he said he would take a look, but no feedback.
Never ever replies to emails. Even after going to office hours, requests were not taken care of. Dropped the course.
Professor Brienza's course was thorough but lacked addressing ongoing humanitarian crises, a significant oversight given his role in human rights education. The influence of Zionist affiliations within York University may have contributed, yet the failure to confront such critical issues remains concerning. A well structured class tho
I have a feeling those students who are posting negative reviews about Professor Brienza went into his class thinking it would be a breeze. This is university...expect readings and go to class prepared. He is a super fair marker, and provides detailed lectures with a thorough analysis of historical and contemporary issues. You get what you put in.
Professor Brienza is an articulate speaker during lectures.Tests are based on key concepts from detailed slides. Some readings were inaccessible and syllabus was bit disorganized but he's a fair marker. He's well-educated on history, philosophy & sociology. Learned a lot of info during HREQ 1010 online & HREQ 3120 on Human Rights and the Charter.
He talks a lot and stays on slides for so long but he's really good at explaining and his lectures are so interesting! I loved this class and it's very easy overall. Just make sure to attend lectures and read the readings. His slides might be hard to read because the font is set so small but they are so helpful too.
