He's a fantastic conductor and does an incredible job at getting across his suggestions for how we can sing better. His extremely high energy usually makes class a blast!
He is an awesome teacher for university chorale. He knows what he's doing, it isn't too hard to get an A, just go and participate. Fun.
It's worth the price of admission just to watch Dr. Broomhead boogie down.

I love this class! It's so fun and he's so crazy! I learned a lot about how to sing!
He is so funny and has so much energy. He not only wants you to become better singers, but to become better people. Very spiritual. He knows what he is doing.
Never had a worse teacher
Dr. Broomhead is amazing. He takes some getting used to because he is so enthusiastic, but he is absolutely awesome. He really encourages each student to push their boundaries and grow both musically and in other areas of life. He pushes you hard becuas ehe wants the best out of you. He selects great music. I definitely reccommend his class!
A great class to take if you want to have fun. Get involved or else you will probably hate it and be warned that his energy is insanely high! I really enjoyed his class!
he's not everything hes cracked up to be. kinda annoying but hes a nice guy i guess. easy A class. show up and you pass. hes got A LOT of energy
I really didn't like him, but it seemed that a lot of the people in the class did. He makes you do dumb things like dance and just weird stuff. You don't sing much in the class, instead he tends to talk a lot. But that said, some people really seemed to enjoy themselves.
Dr. Broomhead is one of the greatest choral directors I've ever worked under. He expects a lot out of you, but he'll help you build a solid vocal foundation (he's huge on learning proper singing technique through habits). Lots of fun, easy(ish) A. Spiritual, too. Expect to have your comfort zone threatened a bit, but go with him--it's awesome.
He is obsessed with "fear". Every class is about how we have too much fear. After a while, ya just tune him out, and everything he says becomes fluff.
University Chorale was amazing! I am taking it again next semester. Broomhead is so much fun and a great teacher too! He has helped me expand my musical ability and comfort zone so much this past semester! Take this class, especially if you are good at singing (but you don't want to dedicate all your time to women's chorus!) :)
I learned a lot about singing from him. Choir was fun but we still got a lot done and learned a lot. He's funny, too, and he knows what he is doing. I liked his music selection for the most part.
This is a great class. I would encourage everyone to take it. He does make a big deal about expanding your comfort zone, but it's ok. His selection of music is awesome.
University Chorale is non audition. Being a music major, I went in to this class not expecting much for it was the only summer choral course. It was totally worthwhile. It was a wonderful experience. Broomhead is a great guy who really know what he's talking about!
I enrolled in the University Singers not expecting much, but man! It was a blast!!! Dr. Broomhead is hilarious and super-fun. The music we sing is challenging and beautiful and lively!!! I would take this class again and again!
He's very pretentious, rather self-centered and self-serving. Doesn't care about the students. Consistently kept class boring. We did sing some amazing music, though--given the music he chose, any decent director could have kept us all engaged at every rehearsal. All you have to do for an A is show up, so it's a pretty easy class.
University chorale is a blast with this guy, he helped me get a lot better at singing, as well as having a great time singing. I really enjoyed it, I am going to take this class again!!!
Annoying to the hilt! If you like whining power trips you'll love him.
OK, so anyone who gives this guy a bad rating are unappreciative slugs because I worked as hard as I could in class, and as a result can sing SO much better. FYI this guy has NO EGO TRIPS WHATSOEVER. He's a very humble guy, people who say otherwise have issues, no joke. THIS CLASS WAS A BLAST! You do have to work hard though, but it pays off!
If you don't believe in abstract ideas such as "the groove," then this teacher is not for you. Be willing to actually LISTEN TO YOURSELF AND APPLY WHAT HE SAYS. I was annoyed with the people who thought they were singing correctly, but were too stubborn to admit when they weren't. The guy is awesome, if you LISTEN!
I loved taking University Chorale from Dr. Broomhead. I was disappointed that I didn't get into Men's chorus but I'm glad I didn't. I love how he takes time to teach other things. A really fun and really easy class. All you have to do is 2 comfort zone assignments and show up for an A. The music he chose is beautiful and fun to sing, as well.
The bomb! He's very insightful and takes his job very seriously. He gives ONE HUNDRED PERCENT (If it were possible to give more percent, he'd do it). It's kinda like any choir in that the group talks a lot. But he kept us under control and we had very effective rehearsals.
He was a great teacher. I learned a lot from him.
I absolutely love the wonderful and uplifting spirit that Breamhead (aka the Broomface) brings to class. He's full of humor and energy. I know that he loves us. His comfort zone assignments helped me to grow as an individual. Not to mention my singing and technique has drastically improved. I am so stoked for semester 2!!!
Wonderful professor. Lots of passion for choir. Asks a lot of the choir and expects it. If you like singing and want to improve, I highly recommend him. No tests and minimal paperwork.
He is amazing!
Dr. Broomhead has a lot of great advise and insights. He is passionate about music education and literacy so expect to hear about that everyday. He is also fairly easy to go to and ask for help/ advise, but be advised he is very literal, choose your words wisely and be very clear at interviews..etc. He wants to see everyone succeed!
Kind and concerned with helping students develop not only good singing habits but also a quality character. A choir the size of university chorale is unwieldy by nature but he did an admirable job and I was happy with our final performance.
Dr. Broomhead is a man of passion and pure love of choral music. He will inspire you and make you laugh every day. He is incredibly talented at explaining concepts to a large group of singers and helps us reach our potential. Pushes us out of our comfort zone. Occasionally dances and/or beatboxes to get us in the right groove. Love him
Dr. Broomhead is the best! He was the nicest director I have ever worked with. Doesn't make people feel bad, and admits when he makes a mistake. There's a little homework, but it's not bad at all. The music's a blast. He really helped bring the Spirit into our practices. I feel like I've actually improved in choral singing! Great class
Dr. Broomhead is an incredible person, the most sincere. He wants to teach you about life through music. He expects you to work hard during class, but never wants you to spend more than 15 HW b/c he realizes it's a 1 credit class. If you're not a musical person it can take a bit to get used to his signs and signals but he's totally okay with that.
Dr. Broomhead is a great guy, but not a fantastic teacher. He was kind of all over the place and disorganized. There was a lot of reading, but the class itself was relatively easy, just super boring. It will help you decide whether or not to major in music though!
Absolutely an amazing class. I went in just expecting it to be another boring choir where we just sing what's in season. Dr broomhead really loves his job and devotes all of his time and energy. He loves to share with you all of the little achievements but he's also not afraid to ask for more.
I took this class just to keep singing. I left with some really valuable choral and personal musical skills. It's really impressive how he diagnoses problems so aptly and gives suggestions that felt like they applied to me specifically. If you're trying to decide between taking the class from him or a grad student, don't think twice, take from him!
BEST CLASS EVER. I love Dr. Broomhead. He's the funniest, most spirited, enthusiastic, inspiring, genuinely kind, and helpful professor I've ever had. I absolutely loved him and his class. TAKE THIS CLASS.
Dr. Broomhead is enthusiastic about music and wants to share his love with his students. He works heard to help the choir sound the best it can.
Broomhead is a very passionate professor that really enjoys what he does, and that energy spreads to the class. The one thing is he is not very organized at all, which can sometimes be frustrating.
He cares a lot about his students and about the quality of the choir. He's very enthusiastic but can consequently be overbearing at times. The main thing that occasionally frustrated me was the pace of the class- he sometimes moves so fast and unclear that you have no idea what's going on. The concert is awesome. I'd recommend him, just be patient.
I didn't love the class, but I did love Broomhead. He's so funny! And he really was a good, caring teacher
He is a great guy and very helpful.
He takes the time to get to know everyone and is very helpful in the process of the class.
Dr. Broomhead is a solid man, teacher, and servant of the Lord. He puts time and heart into his classes and takes the time to know every student by name and their face. He can be a little over the top occasionally with the music, but its nothing that takes away from class. He is just VERY passionate about music and how it is performed. Fine teacher
Professor Broomhead is awesome. He is so enthusiastic about music and singing, and I really enjoyed the class. I took University Chorale, which is a non-audition choir, and it was pretty basic, but you can learn something from the class no matter how talented or untalented you are at singing.
Dr. Broomhead is by far one of my favorite teachers on campus. He is very passionate about music and I would definitely take this class from him again. He loves what he does and you can't help but follow in his footsteps. I've never taken choir before but because of him I would definitely do it again. Great class, fantastic teacher!
Dr. Broomhead is awesome! He is so funny and has faith in his students' ability to progress. There were four papers due the entire semester on breaking a comfort zone. He shares anonymously some of the completed papers and he makes the class inspirational. Show up. Go to the performances. Practice your music. Enjoy his humor and love for you.
Very nice guy, truly wants to push his students above and beyond. If you enjoy music and want to improve your vocal performance, definitely take his class.
I LOVE Dr. Broomhead and University Chorale! Will definitely take again and again! So inspirational! And he incorporates the gospel a lot into the class.
Gives very few assignments where you spend 15 minutes memorizing music. Three "comfort zone" assignments are due throughout the semester. They're awesome! You do something outside of your comfort zone, learn from it, and write about it. Some say Dr. Broomhead is overbearing, but I disagree. He just expects greatness because he knows we are great.
Took this class for the music minor from him. He's a super nice guy, but this was a way hard class surprisingly. I did not expect to have to work hard in a basic conducting class. There's a lot of tests, but usually low key. You actually have to practice your conducting to do well. He's a cool guy and helpful in class, & i learned ton. Recommended
This was a huge choir class, so I didn't talk to him individually much, but Dr. Broomhead is a nice guy and a good professor. He explains singing techniques very well and is a great director. He was also very accommodating when it came to my disability. He does give these "comfort zone" assignments, but they're not hard, just kind of weird.
I would take the class again. There were occasional assignments about memorization that took about 15 minutes. Three assignments you were required to do something out of your comfort zone and write about it. He shared past "comfortzone" assignments to the class, they were hilarious. AMAZING teacher!
2nd time taking this class. He can be inspirational and very helpful with refining the choir as well as the individual's voice. My singing skills have definitely improved as well as my love for music. There are 3 assignments where you have to do something outside of your comfort zone and write about it. Those were great experiences for me.
His choir class is not one you need to audition for, and thus you'd think the quality wouldn't be as good. But, after the concert, you will see that the musical quality of the choir rivals the elite choirs of BYU. You work hard in class and don't waste a single second, but you fall in love with the music and enjoy every second thanks to him.
Prof Broomhead was one of my fav teachers this semester! He's really funny and goes out of his way to learn everybody's name which is impressive. I learned many techniques to improve my chorale singing. There are 3 comfort zone assignments for the semester that aren't hard. You self report on them and they actually can be really beneficial to you.
Dr. Broomhead was such a fun choir director! I always loved going to choir, a place where I could just relax and enjoy my time there. And as long as you actually sang and came to rehearsal and our one concert, easy A. There are daily assignments outside of class, but they're a piece of cake.
Professor Broomhead is a great guy who cares about the students. Since I was in the evening class, lectures got a little long but I still learned a lot from him.
Dr. Broomhead is an amazing choir director with so much passion! I really appreciated how dedicated he was, and he took the time to memorize all of our names before the semester had even started. He pushes us to be our best, but also shows us how much he appreciates all our hard work. Some outside of class assignments, but very easy and doable
Dr. Broomhead is one of the best professor's I've ever had, and University Chorale is a great class! He has you do comfort zone assignments which are actually so cool. And he CARES about every person in the class. I've improved my singing abilities so much in just one semester, and I've learned a lot about life from him too.
Dr. Broomhead was truly awesome. He did a great job at inspiring the chorale to do our best. I was in a lot of hard classes at the same time as this one; chorale helped me de-stress and just enjoy the music. Our concert had some hiccups, but was still a great experience. I highly recommend Broomhead's chorale to anyone (especially other guys)!
We are required to memorize the music because we will perform them for a live audience, but we practice each song every class so it's not hard if you are actively participating. Assignments are easy to do and don't take a lot of time to complete. Broomhead is funny, respectful, and is not afraid to admit he made mistakes.
Dr. Broomhead is quite a guy. I love his passion for music and desire to help the choral group improve. Most of our musical repertoire was beautiful and I appreciated his insistence that we leave our comfort zone to become better musicians. My only complaint is that his lack of positive feedback could be disheartening. Nonetheless, a good class.
Good. Too much effort for a university choral. But a good class.
I loved my choir class, and it was a nice break. He requires you practice outside of class often though. I would get a group together and work with them after each class to do the homework (which is just practicing a specific part for 15 minutes.) Overall wonderful class.
It's always a pleasure being in Chorale with Dr. Broomhead. He works hard to get the choir to be as good as it can be. The out-of-class work, including memorization and comfort zone assignments, weren't particularly difficult or time-consuming. I was glad that I did it, and I'll be coming back next semester!
Broomhead truly cares about his students. He learned the names of each student and wants the best from his University Chorale choir. He focuses on the meaning behind the songs, but also wants his choir to let loose and have fun! Attendance is mandatory and he has comfort zone assignments. Choir can sometimes be boring but Broomhead changes that.
What's not to love about this man? He's passionate, hilarious, and truly loves his students. Also he gets really into his conducting in all of its resplendent insanity. As for the class, show up and do 15 minutes of practice outside of class per class period and you'll get an A. A refreshing break from the stress.
Two pieces of advice: don't take this as an evening class and don't take it from him IF you're looking for a super chill, no-effort chorus class. He expects a lot of energy from you and it can be exhausting at the end of a long day. I loved him and the music, but he makes you practice outside of class pretty frequently. Also, attendance matters.
I loved every minute in class. Broomhead pushed us to be our best and I was so proud of our choir group by the end of the semester. He is charismatic and at 100% energy all the time. Great guy, awesome class
Dr. Broomhead is an amazing conductor! He asks a lot for an non-auditioned choir, but it is worth it. There are a few written assignments, but he doesn't ask for a lot from those.
Dr. Broomhead is such a caring man. You can tell he loves his students and wants them to improve. Attendance is important to pass, but you'll leave every time feeling spiritually rejuvenated and motivated to be a better person. Perfect class for people who love to sing and don't want the stress of an auditioned choir. You'll have to purchase music.
This was the hardest and most rewarding choir class I have ever participated in. Although he is a little much sometimes, he is very supportive and is not afraid to let us know how to improve. I always left his class feeling lighter and happier because we worked hard and made beautiful music together. The daily assignments really help to memorize.
Dr. Broomhead is very knowledgeable in his field. I loved listening to his advice concerning a career in music.
Dr. Broomhead is so funny and cares about your individual success. I am a nonmusic major but always wanted to improve on choral conducting, and this class left a big impact on me. He does expect you to practice what he gives to you, and if you don't you'll most likely embarrass yourself, but--that's some good motivation! Make a friend and practice!
Dr. Broomhead is one of the most amazing people I've ever met. I took Music 176 and now 276 with him, and he has really inspired me to think outside the box when it comes to Music Education. His philosophy lectures are so intriguing and overall, he has helped me really fall in love with my major and career choice. 10/10 experience!
Dr. Broomhead is such an amazing person. I've taken Music 176 and now 276 from him, and he as completely changed my outlook on Music Education. His philosophy classes are my favorite, and he has helped me really fall in love with my major and career choice. If you're on the fence with studying music education, you can rely on Dr. Broomhead to help.
Broomhead was a solid conductor and he clearly understood music. Class was incredibly fast paced though. Don't expect to spend more than 15 minutes on a song per class period. Also make sure you are practicing outside of class. He's a nice guy but I thought it was a little too intense for a non audition group.
I wish every professor cared as much about the material and their students as Dr. Broomhead does. Hes forgiving but inspires growth, hes spiritual and not prideful about it, and he is kind-hearted without being a push-over. Maybe one day Ill figure out how he does it, but in the meantime, TAKE THIS CLASS! You wont regret it
I loved Broomhead so so much. He is a bit fast paced so be ready for that, but he really helps you get things done, and has a fun sense of humor. Totally would take again!!!
Such an amazing class! I would always recommend taking choir from Dr. Broomhead. He's literally amazing and I hope I get to have him again in the future.
This class saved my life this semester. Dr. Broomhead is deeply passionate about music and has fair expectations. This non-audition choir honestly had a better sound than my HS chamber choir; it's because Dr. Broomhead is a genius who knows how to train great singers. Spiritually uplifting class, great professor, awesome experience. Take from him!
Dr. Broomhead is a great teacher. He has so much love for his students and for the music. I look forward to going to this class everyday. He teaches by the spirit and is truly supportive of new musicians coming to learn and grow.
Dr. Broomhead is just wonderful. Always in good spirits, his energy really lifts the energy of the entire room. Picked some really fun songs, too.
Dr. Broomhead took the time to get to know each of us in University Chorale. He cares about his students and wants/ expects them to succeed in his class. There are very few assignments, so attendance is required, as it is a choir class.
I like Broomhead a lot! The class is easy too as long as you make sure to practice conducting once a week or so. It's just this class is the one that made me drop my music minor so... If you like singing normal church hymns for 2 hours a week than boy do I have a class for you. (BYU why is this required for a music minor?? Wish I quit the class).
276 is super boring at first, but it gets better!! Dr. Broomhead is great. He's kind and very willing to help and talk to you. He wants you to succeed. He's a good lecturer. Take notes during lecture! You turn in all your notes and other files for the final, so start getting all that together from the get go. This class isn't too hard!
if you are considering this class please take it, you will not regret it. Dr. Broomhead is the best. He tries to learn all your names and you can tell he cares about what he does. He is amazing!
Broomhead is the single best choir director I've ever had in my 13 years of choir. I'm taking his class again next semester! He is so inspirational and teaches people how to sing so well. Also his song choices are *chefs kiss*.
Super duper easy, super motivating class idk how people see it as a weeder class. Loved learning and super useful info. Can get a bit repetitive. Super fun though and would recommend it. Really easy too and no tests or quizzes.
I love love love Dr Broomhead!!! My friend and I decided to take University Chorale on a whim this last semester, and I am so glad we did! I learned so much about singing, and I felt like each class, Dr Broomhead always taught us something new. He pushes you hard, but you always feel how much he loves you and wants you to succeed. Take this class!!
This was the hardest class I've ever taken at BYU. Dr. Broomhead is a respectable and loving guy, but he is also super frank, so if you are a sensitive person, good luck. I had to practice for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week to do okay. Lots of tests. I wanted to withdraw every single day. I've heard every professor is hard though.
I've heard he's great as a choir teacher, but as a teacher teacher, he can be pretty sporadic. It's difficult to chat with him because he negates himself a lot. When you take Music 276 where there's two amazing professors working with him, you can tell.
He was very intimidating at first but he is very good at teaching conducting. It's mostly tests which can be stressful but people usually practice together and everyone in the class gets very close. It was at night which was a little hard but we'd get out early sometimes. Overall, I recommend taking it from him you'll learn a lot!
He obviously cares about the music, but while he does care about his students, that isn't as clear. He wants his choir to be the best it can be, and due to time constraints, you'll receive more negative feedback then positive-but he will tell you that you're doing great, he just doesn't have time to harp on it. Don't take if you're hard on yourself
Professor Broomhead is incredible! His teaching style is fast-paced but engaging, and he genuinely cares about helping students succeed. The class is challenging but manageable, and Unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep alongside the free textbook. Definitely would take this course again.
Professor Broomhead is awesome! He's a hilarious guy, and by the end of class we all felt like family. A great class, but it is fast-paced, and very challenging. I would consider if you have the time and effort to spare working for this class before signing up.
Brilliant choir director. You MUST attend class, on time, and actively participate. You have a few one-page write-ups you have to do throughout the semester about you leaving your comfort zone, not hard, you just have to do them. If you have the time and are willing to sing, he's a great professor to take this from.
Broomhead is a pretty great choral conductor but can be a change of pace from the way most people would expect to learn in choir. He pays extra attention to vowels and can be a bit demanding with his requests from the ensemble, but the payoff at the concert at the end of the semester is well worth it. Take UC W26 before he retires.
