very hard exams; don't even think about skipping class; pop-quiz; NO PAPERS:)

Very very hard, talks about sex all the time, refers to personal life alot
hard, BUT if you go to class and are alive, its not bad, because his grades are SO inflated
this guy goes so slow in lecture you feel like you've been there forever and a day. his lectures in no way prepare you for the exams which will hurt you
Excellent professor. Very profound speaker who really makes you think. Not a class for idiots!
WORST PROF I'VE EVER HAD! Hardly anything said in the lectures is relevant to exams and there is not texbook to learn from, only novels. I got the same grades when I attended everyday, read the books and took good notes as when I stopped attending period.
Doesn't make much sense. Tests are very hard and random pop quizzes are pretty easy for you read the books. Picks very weird stories to read!!

not the best teacher but he does raise your grade if you have taken all of the tests.....so take your tests

He was the worst lit prof ever. All he could talk about was his ex wife.
Listen. You will have to hold your ground with Bruss, you will have to think, listen, and learn. He offers his intrepretations of stories that can crack open their meanings for you. If you can't hack a challenging course, don't add him. I loved it!
Paul Bruss had to be one of the wierdest teachers that I have ever had. As an incoming freshman taking his class, he was very unhelpful...thank God for his student assistant, Jacque. She was better at helping than he was. His class was one of the funniest
RUN AWAY! Very Boring! Easy if you read the novels, but he does pick some strange ones. Sex is often thrown into the lecture and he likes to make reference to his "weekend friend" and his ex-wife.
Kinda weird. Definitely not over his divorce. He talks about it a lot. I managed to pass with a C without opening the book at all so take it as you will.
class is damn hard, sometimes i get the feeling he is grading based on his personal attitude toward each student so make sure you get in good wityh him early on!

Dr. Bruss is a postmodern instructor. A lot of the people on this site have rated him poorly and that is a shame. I can see where you would not understand as a freshmen, but stick with it. If you can make sense of Bruss, nothing is out of reach!
Bruss is awesome! I don't care what anyone else says. Native American Lit. was a great class, and he was really interesting to listen to. The only people that don't like him are whiney, little 18-year-olds that want to skip class everyday and not work.
He is not over his exwife and tells long stories about his weekend friend. Grading does depend on how much he likes you. Get in good early or you will not be satisfied with how he grades for the duration. Challenging -- yes, fair -- not always.
He is over his ex-wife now, but it does not help all the much. she is very repeditive and it is really hard to get an A in the class. read the storys even though they are thrown at you. the storys are differnt but they sound exactly the same when he talks
I think Paul Bruss is a very attractive man. His class was an inspiration to me and I had a full blown crush on him. He is very passionate about his life and about his work. He gave me hope that not all men are shallow, mindless apes. Thanks Paul
Bruss constantly talks about the same thing over and over again, like his weekend friend and divorce. He does seem to grade rather unfairly. He grades your paper against the other students in your class,it doesn't matter if you show a clear understanding of the text,if someone writes better than you...
I think that paul bruss is an excellent university instructor. The problem is that most students in the class have never read a truly challenging book and therefore do not have the educational background to be successful in his course. Don't take a 400 level course if you are not prepared to work.
This class was a waste of time. Read some books and get tested on his opinion on the book, tests were inclear and very hard. for a 100 level class it was horrible. take someone else if you can.
Very interesting books. Entergetic lecturer. Tries hard to make the class easy if you come to lecture or you read the book. Easy (multiple choice exams/quizes) but he tries to try to get you interested in it. Such funny literature, he talks about sex and controversial topics even his personal life!
Bruss is the man; he's as sharp as they come, passionate about lit and teaching, and funny in a subversive, disorienting way. I didn't get him at first, but that's becasue he's an original. Much of his crazy wisdom has stuck with me.
Bruss is a trip. Be prepared for long monologues about piss that smells like asparagus and ****. I didn't go to class to often because he gets so off topic that its difficult to sit in there for an hour and fifiteen minutes. Everything is strictly essay and he is kind of a tough grader.
Very difficult to draw as much stuff out of the book as he does. Draws sexual innuendo from the most absurd places in text. Answer the tests based on how he lectures, not how u percieve it and you'll pass, brush up on yer big words too, he likes em! he's not at all objective and can be very difficult, take someone else if you can.
Professor's exams are unclear. Example: "Tell me what you think of these two books." That was an actual exam topic, and unless the students regurgitated his opinions, they received poor grades. Most classes he's busy finding sexual innuendo in every line of the text, and waxing on about his ex and his current "weekend-friend." Avoid at all cost!
I found this professor unclear and hard to follow. He gives criteria for his essays and then tells his students that he doesn't grade based on the criteria. If you don't have his opinions, he is a very hard grader. And if you do not speak out continuously in class, the grading of your essays will reflect such. Avoid him if at all possible!!!
I found him hard to understand and he drew sexual inudenos from the oddest places... I dreaded coming to this class. Take someone else.
Worse professor I have ever had, makes absolutely no sense and is a complete weirdo.
All he talks about is his "weekend friend" his divorce, and whatever sexual innuendos he can imagine.
Bruss was a great teacher. The classes did get dull at times, but I enjoyed hearing his abstract views that he got out of reading the same story I did. I also took certain views on life from him.

Is that a hair piece?
Possibly one of the worst teachers I have ever had. I'm not sure how every story can some how reflect that women are less than men. His tests were awful, it was hardly about the book just about his opinions on it and trying to answer which made sense to him. He would only read the sex scenes in the books, which was really creepy. He was very creepy
Paul Bruss will definately challenge you. He expects you to be able to ready critically and understand deep concepts. He is sometimes hard to follow...but pretty entertaining. He talks about his weekend friend a lot.
By far the worst teacher I've had in my 4 years of college. You are expected to understand HIS interpretation of the story, and each story has some sexual undertone in his opinion. Talks about his "weekend friend". Gross.
Okay, um... is he senile or just crazy? This is not a professor who teaches about literature, this is a professor who teaches about his own cracked out views of the world and a few pieces of literature in it. I do not suggest this class at all.
Haha. This guy is a riot. A little nuts, yes. He's definitely got a sense of humor about himself. A very interesting character. Classwise? Hard as HELL!
he's a good teacher. i don't remember any "weekend friend" comments, personally. his reading selection was excellent. if you're looking to just get through an english course, skip him. if you like the subject he's worth taking
I hate paul bruss!! Hardest class ever, and it shouldnt be! He told us in the begining to drop his class if we wanted a good grade! and those pants... oh i cant get enough ;)!!!!
I thought I was going to hate this class but found it really interesting. While I was not a big fan of the reading material, I found Bruss's energy and conversation to be fun and educational.
I didn't find Bruss' class too difficult; I rather enjoyed all of the reading material he assigned -read it by the pool, as I had him for a summer class. Can't complain about contemporary novels. Some awkward moments in class -uncomfortable sexual connotations and the like -but all in all, very informative and not at all boring!
He was a good professor. He wasn't extremly easy, but I would never NOT reccomend him. He has very easy essays that make up most of your grade and moderatley hard tests that don't count for as much. He drops scores, as well. I would take him over again if I could..
Bruss is a madman. That's not saying he's bad however. He knows exactly what he's doing which makes him one of the better teachers out there. The class can be a bit difficult at times but as long as you're able to follow what he says (preferrably after reading the assignment) the class can be a breeze. Plus he is eccentric and just fun to watch.
cool guy. his readings are actually good. he's a liberal guy which makes his class even better..
You need to attend all lectures and keep up on the reading. As long as you are taking good notes and prepare for the essay questions ahead of time you can at least get a B! I thought he was a good teacher and I got an A in his class because I prepared the essays ahead of time AND went to his office and attended every single lecture.
This class was very difficult for me to take. Bruss was HORRIBLE to have for 2 hours at 8am! He is horribly pessamisitic and believes that life for the most part is going to always end up bad. He didn't really teach the material, I did not believe. His choice of readings were out there. Very hard class and professor, glad its OVER!!!!
Class=boring his books=boring...and i'm majoring in english in elementary education...& i didn't enjoy this class. His tests r hard...his quizes r hard..his grading system is screwed up...but he does let you drop a quiz which is nice. He is a nice guy..a lil different..but nice...but the way he teaches the class is just boring.
pessimistic...arrogant....and honestly I don't care about his personal life but am forced to sit and listen about the woman he sleeps with every weekend but refuses to marry...tests are multiple choice, many questions have a fifth option, something along the lines of"such and such character did such and such b/c they took paul bruss's lit 101 class.
goes off on tangents, but still eventually illustrates his point and is passionate about what he teaches, rather than just standing there and collecting dust like other teachers.
I thought everything was easy to understand, and the tests were not hard. But I found his weirdness aggravating and distracting. He's ok, but definitely take it with someone different if you can.
I am a literature enthusiast, so I was excited about the Lit of fiction. The readings for his class can be summed up three ideas: Sex, pessimism, and NOT A FAIRY TALE! His lectures were awful: constant focus on the sex in the readings, his tangeants that led to no relovant or useful information, and his talk of his peronsal life, which is gross
LIFE IS NOT A FAIRY TALE... THERE IS BIG TEXT and little text! Do you choose to live in the REAL world or a fairy tale... over all this class was horrible. He is a sexual weirdo he says hes not almost every day but all of his books are ****ed. I hated this class! I would never take another class with this prof.
He is a bit eccentric, but I have to say that some of the stuff he says did crack me up. If you are a really conervative type, you will not like him. As for the class, it isn't easy, but it could have been worse. The tests and quizzes are hard, but he does grade them on a curve. If you are looking for an easy A don't take him.
This guy is awesome and brilliant. I have no idea what people are complaining about.
Bruss is one of the best teachers I've had at EMU. As a LLW major I was so pleased to find a prof who really got me thinking. I can tell you though that you have to be willing to READ the texts, GO TO CLASS, and STUDY! We are in college after all, so do the work. He is eccentric, interesting, and will open your mind if you let him Give him a chance
He will crack you up! He is so funny and showed me a new level of thinking. He's great, I'd take him again.
Whether people want to accept it or not, he is a brilliant man. He may not have the greatest way of explaining the short stories or novels but he does really make you think. He really does care about students and wants them to understand.
I don't care what people say about Bruss. He's absolutely brilliant and very helpful. Anyone who says different is lazy and didn't put the necessary effort into his class. I was enlightened, inspired, and amused all semester. If you take the time to give Bruss a chance, you will thank yourself for it.
It was extremely refreshing to have a lit class that was out of the ordinary and challenging. As a lit major, I've grown sick of the mundane, everyday lit that I'm forced to read. But Bruss provided me with a breath of fresh air, or a wake-up slap in the face. Whichever. Probably both. If you put in the time & effort, Bruss is great.
Bruss is the man. If you can't handle serious thinking and serious work, don't take him. He does come off like a mad scientist sometimes, since he likes to get in your face regardless if it's 8am in the morning or not, but if you listen, he will stir you and you WIll think! I've enjoyed 2 of his LIT classes and looking forward to take another one.
Paul Bruss marches to the beat of his own drummer. He may come off as unconventional or eccentric, but the bottom line is that he is hands down, the best professor in the EMU Lit department. That man will change your life.
Guy definately has some issues. Think he gets off a little with his sexually oriented lectures on the texts he chooses. Kind of creepy. His in-class essays aren't very clear and I'm still confused on how he manages to grade them. The texts he chose to have us read we're all very dry and old-time based and therefore boooring!
He is not clear at all what he wants on his in-class essays. I wrote outlines, had good structure and good points, and still only got a C. His lectures are dull. It's impossible to take notes. Not worth my money. Regret this decision immediately.
really boring lectures. screwed up grading scale. i went to class every day and tried to do well on my quizzes and tests and i still ended up with a b-.
Don't take this class unless your into post modernism. I can tell he's a really nice guy and really interesting, but unless you think like him, which most don't, your not going to do to well in the class. The best advice is to read the texts before class and participate in the lectures. He doesn't make much sense but if you try you won't fail.
As a person, he is really good. But as a professor, I beg to differ. This class is hard if you are not familiar with the type of text that he chooses. I had to miss two classes, and I feel totally lost now. I would have dropped the classes earlier on if I knew I was going to struggle so much. This is a class to take by itself if yo have to take it.
As an Honors Lit major with a 3.8 GPA, I was happy to get a B in this class. Paul Bruss is not clear about what he wants, how he grades or anything else. I talked to him about my performance and asked how to better my grade and he told me I was just close-minded. Constantly told us fairy tales do not exist and made me question beauty in the world.
Paul Bruss is awesome, a superfreak wealth of knowledge. Classes are not easy but most people who are unhappy with their professors are not focused. Attend class, note the passages, and research postmodern theory and the political/social climates. Pay attention to him, he's really funny, and ask a few serious questions,in other words be engaged.
This professer starts the year off sounding interesting and likeable, but s the semester goes on you begin to understand his low score. He is not over his divorce, his jokes are all about sex, and most of the materal is also about sex. I don't know about you, but I found this to be a little creepy.
I honestly think that Professor Bruss is a great teacher. He is hilarious, and if you attend class it isn't difficult to get a decent grade. Plus, he has this rugged manliness that I think is really sexy. I'm not sure how old he is but doesn't matter because he looks fantastic.
Great professor. Books he chose were extremely engaging and interesting- not easy reads, but really made you think.
The books he chose were incredibly boring. And difficult to understand. When I asked for help, he told me "I wish there was a pill I could give students so they could understand, because this is hard stuff." So basically, I was SOL. Thanks a lot.
I did not enjoy this class very much, but I did enjoy Bruss as a person. I was very surprised that all the works picked were so abstract, none of them even remotely classic or well known. I couldn't even find one in the library. Essays were in class, and had to cover more material than time allowed to elaborate on properly. Great guy though!
Paul Bruss refuses to give students guidance on papers, essays or reading of his "Post Modern" novels. None of which were good or had anything to do with what we were learning about. Wait, did I learn? No one had any idea why we were still coming to class. His lectures were just him reading quotes to us. Thanks for nothing Bruss.
I'm not really sure how some people can't get the concepts discussed in class. They kind of all fell together like a pattern, the different themes of the novels. Ex. The 1st unit books (3) seemed to be about fractured units of time in post-2001 fiction. Techniques of lit today. Aka "recent trends" ...anyway, Bruss isn't a bad guy. Hilarious.
Bruss is NOT a bad guy, but he gives absolutely no guidelines to the type of writing he wants. All he does is read quotes from the books and discusses them. When it boils down to it, good luck on the response papers and essays. If you're screwed in the beginning - you're not coming back - he's labeled you.
This class was a complete NIGHTMARE. The reading was not interesting and very difficult to get through. The in-class essays were impossible. He grades harshly. You have to think like he does. I went to him for help, and was met with the same "I wish I had a pill" BS. He never responded to any of my emails. Do yourself a favor and AVOID him!
He is not helpful. In-Class essays are almost impossible and I'm a straight-A student. Don't think a good grade on the response papers mean you'll get an A on the in-class essays. Animated speaker but terrible when it comes to grades. Some texts are enjoyable, but not all. Avoid if at all possible!! DO NOT TAKE WITH BRUSS.
Honestly, this class had me in tears. Never seen a professor so unconcerned about his students. I reached out for help & got nothing, actually got attitude. If you don't have patience w/students & don't understand that not everyone KNOWS this stuff, you shouldn't be teaching. He's funny & witty, I wanted to like him but...as a professor, no, sorry.
In class he goes on tangents about his life that have nothing to do with the course. He just reads quotes in class. Provides no information on what he wants for the essays. Grading is difficult and unclear. Very awkward lectures, Constantly saying things that aren't funny and calling them "jokes" DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH BRUSS
Bruss is a fun and passionate professor. His class is challenging, but that's not in any way a bad thing.
I took Current Events in World Lit and I thought the texts we had to read were boring. However, Professor Bruss was amusing and what he had to say about the books was thought provoking. I thought he wasn't as clear as he could have been about what he wanted from the in-class essays, though.
The novels in this class are excellent! Everything is examined from a postmodern perspective, but he will not be explaining what that means. If you go into this class already understanding the basic concepts of deconstruction and you have some familiarity with Nietzsche you will get an A. If that last sentence made no sense to you, don't take it.
He goes on tangents about his life that have nothing to do with the course. He just reads quotes in class and talks about the plot. Provides no information on what he wants for the essays. Grading is difficult and unclear. Very awkward lectures. DON'T TAKE WITH BRUSS!!
If you have ever wanted a long, dry lecture, with an easy grade, this is the one for you. Disregard my run on sentence. He's pretty dry, but his energy is high, if that makes sense. Good luck!
I wanted to add my perspective as a former student. I took his class in 1993! I agree with what a lot of posters are saying. His class had some difficult and abstract concepts. However, no one made me think more than Paul. Concepts i learned in his class resonate within me today. Take his class, as life wears you down you will appreciate it!
He goes off on tangents and does not get to material, my class is two class periods behind schedule and we are almost done with semester and have tried to cut readings to catch up. He wants in depth essays with quotation but mostly speaks about plot in lecture. Quizzes are easy as long as you know the story and attend lecture. Would'nt recommend.
I think the reviews here don't represent how I have heard most of my peers (majors) talk about him. Everyone I ever spoke to feels he is inspirational. No other class was as key to improving my thinking and writing. He can be intimidating, but this class will work you if you are willing to be independent and willing to go with the material.
I really liked Bruss but he always went on tangents&after the first few classes, his lectures were not helpful for assignments. I found the readings we did to be very boring, and you can pass by skipping his lectures and just going for quizzes and essays. As a person, I say he's a pretty okay guy but as a professor, I did not care for him.
I have mixed feelings about Paul Bruss. He's clearly experienced and knowledgeable about literature, but I he expects we understand the books in the same depth as him. I tried participating, but I always felt I was missing what he wants us to see. I think my lit. analysis has improved somewhat. Very unclear about expectations.
He gets really loud and personal during lectures.
Paul Bruss is a bad choice if you have any history with sexual assault. He had tendency to often say very uncomfortable and sometimes insensitive things about the topic. Also, he really just talked about plot and made stuff up, then told us not to talk about plot. If you disagree with his opinions/thoughts he seemed to ignore it.
one of the worst teachers I have had. hypocritical. isn't sensitive on touchy subjects. you will not understand how your grade works in this class. talks about inappropriate things in class. overall just doesn't make sense
Requires a lot of reading and remembering material from multiple novels. In-class lectures were informative but sometimes slow and off topic. Multiple choice tests were based on what you remember from the reading. Written essays are based off the in-class discussion. Paul Bruss knew the information and wanted his students to succeed.
