Really cares if students understand the material. He'll go over something in a new way if students are confused. He learned our names in the first week, too. Definitely take something from him if you have the chance!
Prof Buckingham is the best math professor I have had in 6 years. He is clear and explains his process. He does lots of examples and cares about students.
Awesome prof, really wants the student to understand concepts. willing to explain things during office hours as well. easily approachable and quite friendly. Strongly recommend his classes. fantastic.
He has teaching problems i mean he cannot express himself... their are better profs then him for this course not recomended ...
He had a hard time explaining himself(unnecessarily ramble) and would easily get flustered and nervous, hahah. He strove to help as much as possible and would even spoon feed answers for assignments but later ranted on this. Really down to earth, approachable guy but terribly awkward in class. AMAZING NOTES! Easy final and not so bad midterm.
Awesome Prof! quite helpful and brilliant in teaching. he has office hours twice a week which is extreamly helpful since he is willing to teach during office hours as well. very friendly and was one of my best profs! Math 125 was an easy course and Paul made it look even better. Assingments were easy, midterm easy and final was moderate. Awesome!
Very good prof. Excellent examples and notes. In terms of easiness, you should do well if you attend class and do the assignments. Nothing shocking on the midterm or final. He's very helpful and wants students to understand the material.
I consider him to be one of the worst teachers I have ever encountered. His explanations are unnecessarily convoluted and abstract, and his assignments are very, very difficult to interpret. I'm amazed that there are other positive reviews about this guy. He certainly is kind and seems to want to help, but I do not think he is capable.
Good prof. EASY final exam. Wasn't overly necessary to go to class but helpful examples in notes.
Awesome Prof ! ! ! Extremely helpful. he has office hours twice a week and wants to help students. His notes are clear, and easy to understand. Highly recommend his class . . .
Despite the syllabus clearly saying it would follow the university marking guidelines, the class average was set to 2.1! Midterm was too long so it was curved. Final was easy so it was probably curved to wreck all of our marks. Unless he figures out how to make a fair test this will be a GPA dropper.
Nice pro, polite and always patient when you ask him questions but his mind jumps fast he should explain more sometimes in class. Those who gave him high rate must get A I guess. Nice Prof overall.
I had him for 125 & 225. Great guy but he has hard & painful assignments. His mannerisms are off-putting and he occasionally gets flustered in class, poor guy. His midterms are long (averag 40-some%) and I never finish but his finals are fair and easy to pace. Great notes but the way he taught the material leaves room for improvement in clarity.
Fantastic teacher and person in general. I had him last fall for 125 and it was my favourite class by far. His examples are very thorough and show a great variety of everything you'd see on exams, etc. Midterm and Final were long, but there's just a whole lot to know in linear algebra and they're still more than doable if you know your stuff.
Great Prof. His accent and will to teach really keeps you awake and interested in the class. Final exam was hard but fair. If you really do enjoy linear algebra like me, this guy is the right guy to teach it.
Dunny and had a lot to teach, but his examples were all over the place and the course/proofs became more and more cryptic as it went on. He knows his stuff, but can't teach to those without background in linear algebra. If you're good at studying on your own, the textbook will save your life. Otherwise, don't expect to learn much during lectures.
I'm torn down the middle. My understanding of the subject increased, but he relies too much on proofs which is offputting for those like myself who are new to linear algebra. Class average was 50% after 2nd MT. If he gave more examples involving numbers instead of proofs, the class would have been much more enjoyable.
Proofs proofs proofs! It doesn't stop with him. It's all proofs and very little, tangible material. Notes are all either proofs or examples of proofs, the midterm was all proofs, and the final was all proofs! He's a nice guy and is helpful and all that, but he just can't teach, which is such a shame.
An extremely nice professor who genuinely cares about his students. The assignments in math225 can be challenging, but never hesitate to visit the professor during his office hours whenever you're confused or have any sort of questions. If you thoroughly understand the material and all the theorems taught & know how to use them, you should be fine.
a mathematical stallion. a true gentleman of the formal discipline. This class is really hard. But Paul Buckingham is the best math professor I've ever had
If you are passionate about math then P. Buckingham is the prof for you. He is extremely knowledgable and will not hesitate to help out his students after class or in help sessions. Do his practice exams and look over the examples in the notes: if you can do those 2 things then you will do very well in the class.
Dr. Buckingham is an incredible prof. He's very accessible outside of class and always excited to chat about math. The tests are fair and very doable as long as you budget your time well and work through lots of practice problems beforehand.
He barely uses eclass. The material he gives is extremely little. Study everything from the book because his notes are not enough for this course. Do not pick him if you want to get a good grade because he marks very strict. He said " I don't want everyone to get good grades." He gets frustrated easily and into proofs lots!
Paul Buckingham is an amazing person, he really cares about his students and is accessible when needed. He is very funny and his UK accent is great. Can get flustered easily but he will laugh it off. He speaks clear, however he is a very hard marker who also does a lot of proofs. He isn't out to get you but the course is challenging. Avg was 2.3
Absolutely amazing prof. I had such a horrible first experience with linear algebra and Paul was the best and was so helpful. He was very accessible and amazingly helpful outside of the class and his lectures are amazing. Praying to get him in next years course.
Doesn't follow the textbook, unorganized. No e-class notes for the first half of the semester(no reason), and when he decided to post them they were simply whatever he decided to write on the board without explanations. Very mediocre experience, don't take the hit to your GPA for a course like this from him.
I like his British accent very much, his midterm is quite easy, but final exam is quite challenging
Decent and funny guy, he made the boring math course interesting and easy than ever, take him.
Math215 is a HARD COURSE. Paul is a great prof, very kind, considerate and handsome. But he puts difficult theory questions on the WebAssign. His finale exam was near the same difficulty as his examples in class; he gave us another prof's past final exam and it was much harder. Paul is good, Math215 is not. I'm pretty sure I got a C or D atm.
Look for prof who simplifies the course work? He is not the one.
Math215 should not be this frustrating, but Pual has made it. The class average is 1.8. Just think about your GPA before taking his course.
He is really amazing at teaching Lin Alg. The lectures are really interesting, and his little antics are honestly adorable. The assignments are tough, the midterm is tough, the final was ok. He makes you work really hard, but you end up learning so much. If the midterm is difficult, the final will be ok. The inverse is true as well.
He is one of the best Lin Algebra I had. His assignments are hard and the course is hard. He knows that and that's why he always tries to help his students by encouraging them to come to office hours. He is super caring and tries to be accessible to help you out. His lectures are a little heavy but that's Linear Algebra. What would you expect.
Probably the worst prof on campus. He's nice but can't teach for the life of him which is the case with many profs but paul here takes it to another level. Maybe a Ph.D. isn't enough to be a prof. An undergrad in education would do you wonders paul
He may be a good person... But not as a Prof, he has no freaking idea how to teach, I've been his calculus 1 class, I got a decent GPA just because I have done calculus back in high school, I seriously did not learn anything out of him. If you have never done calculus in your life, must avoid.
It's very apparent his teachings are more suited for higher levels. He spends to much time on the simple things and thus runs out of time for things that require more explaining. It's to the point where he just throws examples at us skipping steps and giving us the answers. There's just more material to cover than there should be.
The homework was tricky, but he had office hours where he gave substantial hints and support. His lectures were all great, and he made sure every student knew what was going on. He even made the last few lectures have an emphasis on problem solving in prep for the final! My only regret is we weren't able to go over the 4-colour theorem due to time.
He is a really nice professor! In class, he gives us lots of examples to practice and teaches us how to solve them. If you can figure out those examples, tests and exam will not be so tough and surprising.
His lectures were good but they were no where close to the level of difficulty of the quizzes and ESPECIALLY the final. It was really frustrating. A piece of advice if you are in a physics program you DO NOT WANT TO FAIL CALC. It will screw you up HARD.
The professor is really dedicated to help you to have a good grade for this class. The test is a little bit long but if you really understand the material, you will achieve an A for the course
Paul's lectures were great and he was always so nice. He laid out all of the topics well and provided typed up notes for the entire course. He had office hours after most classes. There were assignments every week as well as weekly practice problems and solutions. Midterm and final were both pretty easy. Awesome prof!
Paul is so nice! I love him! The assignments were super straightforward as long as you kept up with the material and if you were ever confused, his office hours were REALLY good and he explained things so nicely! His midterm and final were very fair and I really can't say anything bad about Paul! This is coming from someone who did bad in 125!
Switched into Paul's class a couple weeks into the semester because my first prof left much to be desired. Paul is a really nice guy who goes the extra mile to help his students. He really made me like this course.
Paul made linear algebra so straightforward and actually interesting. He always gives clear feedback and is readily available outside of class. It is very obvious he cares about his students and the quality of his teaching. Lectures were great and were provided with alot of practice, didn't need to touch the textbook.
TBH, he is a good prof, he clearly knows what he is talking and good mathmatician. However, he is way too strict with students. he doesn't show leniency or friendliness to his students. I once emailed him asking him some questions when he got bogged down marking midterm and he just went off on me saying I'm insensitive to his efforts? come on man!
I liked Paul well enough. 228 was an abstract algebra course and I personally struggle with the concepts. Even so I think Paul's notes themselves were extremely helpful, and his lectures help explain the concepts even better.. Assignments are challenging but help you explore the far conceptual reaches of course material and help you in the long run
Assignments are sometimes crazy long and make you scratch your head for a while but once you get it it's not that bad. He is a great teacher though, his classes are quite interesting for math.
I took MATH-215 during the spring term. It was a lot of material condensed into five weeks, nevertheless, the lectures were excellent. During in-class lectures, he gives ample time for us to take notes, and he encourages students to ask questions. He responds to emails, and office hours were helpful. His enthusiasm for math is contagious.
there were latex notes for every topic on eclass, and the lectures consisted of him going over the latex notes and making clarifications on small remarks. exams and assignments are very fair, and usage of office hours was encouraged. 228 is challenging if you dont have a proof backround, so id highly recommend you take it with him!
Buckingham is the worst possible choice for math 125, it doesn't matter what you learned in the course, written sections of online assignments will be basically brand-new concepts with nothing to help you with understanding them. The 4 written questions are worth double what the online section is. Drop and get out of his class while you can
What an awesome guy, his mannerisms are so adorable and he's kinda awkward but in the best, most adorable way possible. His accent is stellar and he has such great notes; definitely my fav notes a prof has ever had. He genuinely cares so much about the students and our success and it rubs off on you. What great guy that is super caring and classy.
Paul has a great understanding of linear algebra, and applies it well in class, only thing is he is extremely slow, and takes the notes for us. I would much rather have the content shown, and be able to take notes on how to apply the content myself. I feel like I learn more from the learning activities than I do in lectures.
He's a nice guy and all but I would have preferred if he actually taught concepts in lectures and then referred us to examples with pre-recorded vids. It's the other way around. I feel like I would've understood the concepts better if he taught the concepts in depth during lectures, but we had to learn them from eclass videos and quizzes instead.
he is the GOAT. W prof. i will take him in future classes if i get the chance to!
Dr. Buckingham is a good prof teaching a hard class. He is accessible and quick to respond outside of class and he teaches in a well-spoken manner.
This is a really hard class for many, but he made it so much better and was the most helpful person you could ever imagine.
Great professor overall, put a noticeable effort into making sure the students actual understood the material.
This guy personally made me interested in Linear Algebra, I am going to take Linear Algebra II because of him, and I hope he teaches it. He is a great guy and makes an effort to make sure his students understand the contents. Best professor I have ever had, hands-down.
Best Math Professor I ever had. I made it through the class because of his lectures. He always makes sure that students understand the stuff. Also he uses every second of the class wisely.
Professor Buckingham is a superb professor teaching a course that doesn't need a professor. He teaches very clearly and succintly, very understandable. However 125 is structured in a way where you don't need to go to lectures to do well, so unfortunately the professor isn't really needed. Nevertheless, he made linear algebra very fun.
I got 99 points totally in this course and got a full mark in the final exam.I think attending the course is not necessary and all you need to do is to review the learning acticity and the template of the past exams before attending the exams since all the material from eclass is understandable.
Prof. Buckingham is a great prof. for 125. He taught clearly and ensured that everyone understoof before continuing. There were learning activities due on the day of each class regarding the material learned in class, 1 midterm, and a final exam. All assessments accurately reflected material learned in class.
This professor was very caring and supportive to me and others. I failed Linear Algebra during 2020 term and I was deeply insecure about passing this course for 2023 term but Paul's enthusiasm to teach influenced me to study harder and force myself to enjoy mathematics. I strongly recommend him. Thank you, Paul.
Great lectures taught by a great prof! 228 itself is tough when you don't have experience in abstract math but he did a great job teaching the material and made things very understandable. In addition, he has 3 days for office hours which is very helpful for those new to ring theory.
Great professor. Knows how to teach well, very organized course notes. There are 11 assignments in total which I believe is too much with his tough grading, but you can always skip it if you want, its weight will be automatically transferred over to your final exam. 100 Practice questions and course notes are VERY helpful.
Paul is an incredibly instructor. Communicates information and material very clearly, teaches with passion, and organizes all the notes very well. Assignments are difficult but fair, and expand upon course concepts well. If you work hard, listen in lecture, you will do good. Exams are not terrible, one of the bets professors out there.
Paul is one of the best profs I have ever had. He is a very clear communicator, cares about his students, knows mathematics well, and is always willing to help if needed. His assignments are challenging, but assessments are based on the assignment questions. He is a very fair instructor. He is passionate about what he does.
Paul is one of the best profs I have ever had. He is a very clear communicator, cares about his students, is very fair, knows mathematics well, and is always willing to help when needed. His assignments and exams are challenging, but assessments are based on the assignments. He is also very passionate about mathematics. Would recommend!!
The assignments are challenging while he is caring and always willing to help whenever you need. He explains things quite clearly as well as uploads his purely handwritten lecture notes after class, which is the best resource you can succeed this class through. Midterm and final exams are easier than assignments and he is a generous grader.
He can sometimes go very quick through stuff, but his office hours are very useful.
Second course taken with Paul, specifically taken to have him. He is an amazing instructor. Content is challenging at times, but he does a good job explaining concepts clearly. Go to office hours! Exams are the definition of fair (Ie, be able to do the assignments without needing to reference notes, and practice exams, the exams are very similar.)
Paul is amazing. At the beginning of last term, I was slacking, showing up late, and it showed when I failed my midterm. I began going to his office hours 3 times a week and discovered how much he cares and how helpful he really is. When I got an 83 on my final, he sent me a personal email congratulating me on my improvement. 10/10 do recommend.
Amazing prof. 10/10 recommend
He cares about his students. Attend office hours, he is really helpful especially if you get stuck (Math 125 is hard!) He's funny & his excitement for linear algebra is very apparent. Midterms and finals are hard, but that is out of his control. I highly recommend coming to him for feedback & to walk you through specific questions, it is worth it!
Paul is one of the most caring profs I've had. His lectures move fast sometimes, but he certainly knows his stuff, and goes above and beyond to help you during office hours and over email. He truly cares about his students, and even checked in with me personally when I had missed a few lectures due to illness. His exams are tough, but he is great!
If you end up in Paul's class for linear algebra, just know you've hit the jackpot. The lectures move fast, and the exams were quite difficult for me, but that is due to the difficulty of the subject. Despite my struggles, Paul made sure to offer much assistance outside of class, and I ended up with a passing grade despite failing the midterm.
Professor Buckingham did an amazing job teaching this course. It's a very theory heavy and also workload heavy. He went over lots of practice problems (of which he had a massive amount of for practice) and I felt lectures were always on point. Very respectful to students, attend office hours for lots of guidance.
Cannot recommend Paul more. He is is the most caring prof and creates an environment to make you feel like you can ask any questions freely and ALWAYS makes sure we actually understand. His office hours are top notch. Only prof that has gone above and beyond in my 2 years at u of a. Wish he taught more math courses!!!
super nice but two 90 minute evening midterms booooooooooooooo
Prof Buckingham is honestly amazing. He is so kind and he makes a genuine effort to know his students. He always enters the room with a huge smile. You can tell he really cares about his job and he wants every student to succeed. My favorite saying of his is "Holy Crumbs!" Be grateful if you get him as your prof.
Very concise lectures, and there are often lighthearted moments that show he truly enjoys teaching the material.
One of the best math professors at the entire university. If you have the option to have him as your prof for any class, take it. No other professor will explain concepts as clearly, kindly, and concisely as he will. He made linear algebra feel as easy as counting
Safe to say Paul calculus fun, if you get him as a prof your set. Although IT IS STILL a tough course so you really have to keep up, but he's always more than happy explain no matter how big or small. Office hours were always so helpful and caring. The ONLY PROF who learns everyone's name & remember, making such a great impact.
Went above and beyond to help students when they are struggling. If you need to take this course, I recommend that you take his class.
Very excellent prof.
For the first few weeks I felt I was in good hands. But I find it might be easy to get in his bad graces, I've emailed him 4 times this semester, and only 1 got a reply. He has a bit of a condescending attitude over email, and this makes him pretty unapproachable. I struggled with the course, and don't feel his explanations are adaptive.
AMAZING PROF, really spending his time caring every single student who stands out (physically, by asking a question or answer a question), if you are going to attend office hour or needs office hours for help, DO select his course - at least MATH 144, he explains every question respectfully at every office hour, and he always extends the time!
He is such a lovely person, but the way he explained things was excessively confusing. he put so much effort into being accommodating for all his students and was one of the first profs I've had who actually cared about his students. loved this man, but be prepared to teach yourself a lot
I promise you take his class, it is definitely a hard course and you always have to keep up with it. But he was always so beyond helpful and caring for each one of his students. Office hours were the best, always extended whenever he could, even did office hours after last day of classes . His care for his students were so prominent. LOVE THIS PROF
dude rocks lmao. great prof for what is generally considered to be a fairly difficult class.
Paul somehow made linear algebra make sense.
this man is a sweetheart, calc is a very tough course but he always prepared us well. practice midterms and final we're actually representative. love this prof
If you took Calc in high school this class will be easy especially with Paul. He genuinely cares about students understanding. Very kind and recognizes shyness. Very helpful office hours. All you need is to stay on track and dont skip his classes. He's energy is positive. Easy exams. Sometimes his explanation gets confusing but he helps with it.
he taught calc so well i actually enjoyed doing homework. love this prof. sad he doesn't teach calc II&III. im actually having fomo from not having him as a prof anymore.
Great proff. This is a very easy class for someone who has already done Calculus 30 in high school. I hardly attended any class. An easy B+ class.
Good professor. Distinguished gentleman. He reminds me of David Tennant.
