Brings down a very interesting class. Is very pessimistic and it seems like he wants you to fail. Class is relatively boring, and he always looks down when he talks, and sporadically raises his voice when he lectures to add enthusiasm and excitement. It's much weirder than it is motivating.
Calarco is without a doubt the most dynamic, energetic teachers I've ever had. He knows his subject material very well, and loves involving the class in discussions. He does his best to make the class entertaining and fun, but be careful not to take him for granted. His tests are hard if you don't study. Weekly current event journals. Low homework.
He doesn't really go through the book. He is not the best public speacker. He will go out of his way to help you as long as you ask. His tests aren't hard as long as you read the book.
Easy class, but you need to put the time in to read your book a few times before the test. Everything is directly from the book. Makes good use of multimedia. A little bit pretentious. Overall a decent class
Decent teacher, watched lots of movies in class, and didnt always review everything that would be on the test in class. Then he wondered why lots of students failed. The class though made sense to me, I read the book, and studied from the book for the test
Nice to those who work hard, gets very angry at tardiness. Lectures hit or miss, sometimes talks about something a lot& it ends up not being on test. Tests VERY hard, offered extra credit after because class average was low. Got better towards end of semester. He says to come to talk to him if you're struggling but he is sort of formidable.
Great guy, very passionate and enthusiastic about what he is teaching and knows what he is talking about. Attempts to get you to think outside of the box. He can seem intimidating but go to class and pay attention and you'll do fine. Reading the chapters is highly recommended. Don't disrupt class(phones, talking, lateness)Taking again, enjoyable.
His tests are very hard if you don't read the book. The notes are useless because he writes one word and talks bout it for 30 minutes. Offers extra credit because you will need it
I took this class because I had to for Saint Rose. He made good use of technology and media. I thought he was a fair grader, but a friend at Albany College of Pharmacy failed his class because Professor Calarco took off 10 points because he felt he was not putting forth effort. SO If you take this class put in some effort... and go to class.
He is the worst teacher that I ever had. In his clases he loves to talk about the **** of his father and about how many of his friends were freak or not. He acts like a crazy jumping and throwing objects in class and against the walls.
He is very unwilling to accept others ideas. You will get sick of watching pointlesss Youtube videos everyday. Nothing he talks about will help you with the class. Stutters often. Uh Uh Uh Speaks to you like you are a child yet wants you to act mature. Requests that you do current events yet cuts you off it you try to have a discussion. ARROGANT!
If you show up to class and read the textbook you will pass. His tests are long, and most questions come from the reading. I think people don't like his teaching because the class is more challenging than most community college classes, but get used to it because that class is cake compared to most classes at a 4 year school.
Amazing professor-my favorite. He gets crazy with his lectures, but in a good way-he's very passionate about the subject matter and loves to teach. Tries to get you to think differently. Absolutely HATES TARDINESS. And no-shows..with a passion. Knows subject matter exceedingly well. Tests are hard but do-able; study from the book most definitely.
Great professor. Really opens your eyes to different things you never realized before. His tests are a little difficult so reading the textbook is a must. He makes you want to come to class because of the amount of enthusiasm he brings to his lectures. If you have want to learn learning take his class. I could have gotten an F and id say the same
The only negative thing is he asks rhetorical questions and always lectures. You NEED to show up on time. He always offers extra credit & those who work hard and do all the assignments gain in the end. His tests you need to go over your notes for, but it's nothing super difficult.
This guy was the best lecturer professor I had while at HVCC. That may sound weird but he really gets the subject, and brings it to life. If you do the extra credit while doing decent on the tests a B is quite easy to get.
I had him online this summer. I totally loved this class and was sad when the 6 weeks flew by. He was so cool, I mean such a geek but I love him for it. Short papers (1-2 p), discussion posts and responses to others, current events (1-2 p) I loved the readings he gave us, everything was interesting..we live in the Matrix! Take him.
most amazing professor i've ever had. he's very intelligent, funny, and doesn't tolerate b.s. which i loved because i'm there to learn. i would recommend taking him only if youre a heard worker and want to learn everything you can about sociology. can't wait to take another class with him!!
Prof. Calarco is a great professor. He does not tolerate crap in his classroms and wants everyone to participate and learn. He can go off on tangents sometimes but still keeps your attention. Would recommend taking him to anyone.
I think that he is a great teacher... He puts a lot of thought and energy into his teaching to make the students interested in what he is actually teaching. He adds a lot comic relief here and there which I enjoy. The only thing negative input I have is, his tests. Very difficult! You have to read the book carefully. Extra credit for those who show
Mr. Calarco was by far one of the best professors I have had at hudson valley. He gives a few open book tests, no midterm, the final was open notebook. He might come off as rough around the edges but he is funny and he really cares about the subject he teaches and how much his students are interested. He rarely gives hw and its easy when he does.
He's a great teacher who wants you to succeed. He answers any questions you have quickly and tries to be flexible and fair.
Calarco is a very good teacher. The work is not that hard and he is very easy going. He gives his assignments online but you can hand them in online or in person. Most of the assignments took me 10 minutes to complete. The hardest assignments took me about a half hour to an hour. This is a fun class and he is a smart guy.
Calarco was a good teacher but you have to beware of his sense of humor. most kid in my class hated him, he sometimes does bring people down but he does no what he is talking about and he is willing to help you. he has an extreme amount of energy. his class is fun and you will never fall asleep!
I took it online. It was awful. He seems to think that we only take one class: his. I spent so much time working on stuff for his class that I didn't do as well as I usually do in other classes. I didn't do well in his class either. He has no respect for students' time.
Calarco is brilliant. His lectures are interesting, engaging and he has a great sense of humor. He doesn’t put up with b.s. like missing classes or due dates. He is supportive if you have a real problem though. His tests and exams are doable. People that complain are not interested in the class to begin with. Great teacher! Best class I ever take
Calarco was an utterly amazing professor. His class was deeply engaging, and he had a fantastic point of view on everything. It was the most important class that I took while at Hudson Valley. He may seem a bit rough at first, but it's honestly due to the man's respect of academia. He doesn't give grades, he makes you earn them. He'll tell you that
Calarco is by far the worst professor I have ever had. He is way too full of himself and thinks he's gods gift to earth. I do not recommend him at all.
I had high hopes for this class. He started out ok but then went bad. He lectured little as compared to going off on tangents and he showed tons of videos.Tests were based on textbook facts though little to nothing was discussed about the readings. He asked menutia on tests. (Number of votes from supreme court ruling ie 7-2)I can't reccomend him.
Awesome teacher! Took this class because I had to and ended up learning and loving it! Really teaches you to look at things in a new perspective! Read the text and participate in the dicussion board, easy A!
Do yourself a favor and take this class. He's a genius and he makes you think outside the box. He's also really funny and his lectures are super interesting. Taking his class really gets your mind spinning. Beware- he expects you to get all your work done and doesn't deal with laziness or tardiness. Easy A if you do the homework.
Thumbs up
the actual material is all self learned through textbook reading.. I can never get myself to go to the class because he never teaches anything! He just goes on and on about his life and praises himself as if hes gods prodigy, you will never go a class without him letting you know he is a sociologist and talks as if they're superior to everyone else
Lectures are pretty confusing because he jumps around a lot with the presentation and notes. He's a cool guy but he loves to toot his own horn. If you just show up to class, listen, and do the journal assignments, you will do just fine in the class.
Nothing he talks about during the class helps with passing the tests. You are all most better off skipping class and studying on your own. Would never talk his classes again.
had him for social problems. went to class every day for the first few weeks and didn't take a single note. everything is self-taught from the textbook. i did really well in the class because i had taken sociology the previous semester. skipped the majority of classes and still pulled a B.
Regular Sociology online - had an average of 2 papers per week plus the extra reading that he requires. LOTS of work. You will learn stuff, but you will also get lost in the published sociology papers he likes to assign. Spent wayyy too much time on this 3 credit class alone. Never again.
Avoid Calarco at all costs. So arrogant. All he talks about is his ex-wife who doesnt want him, him, his kids and his "buddies". His class time is a waste of yours. Don't bother going to class, just read the textbook. Makes you feel stupid if you ask a question, and embarrasses you if you're 30 seconds late. His life is a grandeur delusion.
He is very full of himself. Likes to belittle and call kids out. Is big on tardiness but always runs a minute or so late. His assignments are super easy but his exams are a little harder. We watched a lot of YouTube videos. His lectures were about his life, nothing important. Honestly show up to a few classes and read the book and you'll do fine.
Awful professor. The only way to actually learn anything is by reading the text book cover to cover, also tests are only off of info from the book. All he does in class is talk about himself
Does not prepare students at all for his exams. Not structured. Extremely repetitive when it comes to talking about his own personal life. Does not seem to be concerned with the fact lots of students do very poorly on his exams. Class is not mandatory, just read the textbook cover to cover.
Avoid his classes at all costs. His class has 75% of your overall grade being test average, & then gives ridiculous tests. You need to know every detail of every chapter from the book to pass, and he won't cover anything from the book in his class. Don't take any of his classes if u need to graduate. I had all A's and B's until his class.
One of the most interesting professors to listen to. He knows his material on the course. He shows enjoyment and interest in the topic. Shows a lot of interesting videos. The assignments tend to be really easy. The test some of the questions are very tuff, but if you dissect the text well enough, the test shouldn't be that difficult.
The lectures are about nothing. He only talks about himself and make sure you read the book or you won't pass.
Hes a good guy, although I hated him at first. Cares about his class and students and isnt too strict with deadlines. Hes very fun and loud, so you dont have to worry about dozing off in his class. Dont like how tests are basically only on textbook material and not lecture notes.
All class was videos rarely anything else, not tested on lectures tested on textbook. 8 page paper about yourself very vague,
Tests are based on textbook not notes! He's hilarious but rude!
He gives you no useful information in class. I went to class everyday and only 5% of what we took notes on was on the test. The rest of the information you have to get yourself out of the textbook. I would be better off skipping class to read the textbook cover to cover.
Do not take this guy, like everyone else has said he is super full of himself and spends a majority of the class praising himself for being somebody who studied sociology and almost seems to have a god complex about it. Despite claiming to be a sociologist, he has no PHD. If you ask for help you will be belittled and ignored. Would NOT take again.
boring watched way too many movies
terrible too many movies guy was extremely dull didnt teach what you will need to know for tests you have to read that out of the textbook. some bs 8 page paper about nothing
TERRIBLE class! His lectures are pointless and have absolutely nothing todo with his tests. He spends way too much time talking about himself and belittling students. If you dont read the textbook you will NOT pass his class. Also, notes you take in class are not worth taking down, they have no relevance to what the test requires.
Great Professor! I took his online class and he is there to help you every step of the way! Gets right back to you via e-mail. His course load for a 100 class was a lot but you leave the class gaining a lot of knowledge!
He gets off topic so easliy. He will yell at the computer randomly and you have no clue what he is talking about, also his notes are horrible because they dont really help you prepare for the test at all. He talks about fortnite way to much and it gets annoying
This class was not the best for me personally. His lectures were ok and the concepts were easy to grasp except I was very intimidated and almost scared to give my opinion in his class because I thought I would be talked down to or lectured on about how my opinion was incorrect. Would not take this class again with this professor.
horrible professor
Has funny stories about his life. youll learn more about him then you do about the class. READ THE TEXTBOOK TO PASS. that will be your only saving grace.
This class was awful and a complete waste of time. Notes and lectures are absolutely useless. Tests are entirely based on the assigned textbook and assignments are easy. Paul Calarco is rude and arrogant and likes to call out students for no reason. 11/10 would NOT recommend.
Even though I only got a c was not his fault I was very into the lectures and didnt want to fall asleep like other classes I was very engaged in what we were talking about and felt it was easy to raise my hand in his class would absolutely take him again
You're graded on 8 current event journal articles, 12 discussion boards, and an 8-10 page final paper. He says the book is required, but I never used it (regret purchasing it). I felt he was pretty lenient with his grading (my paper got a 100). The final paper is a long one, and his instructions pretty vague. Put in the effort and you'll do fine.
I honestly have never really cared if a teacher was rude or not and I am usually able to look past it and continue class. But this guy is a different story. Hes so Arrogant And pretentious I want to scream whenever he talks to me. He is extremely unclear about assignments and difficult to work with. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Professor Calarco was just not good to have. His lectures had NOTHING to do with the quizzes and often blamed you for not understanding the material. While he was funny, it did dull the blow of his attitude. If this class was not easy on it's own I doubt I would have passed. No homework, only long, tough, recorded quizzes.
This guy was an absolute STOOGE, he made it the worst class i have ever taken in my life. PLEASE save your life and look for another professor for this class
boring. uses outdated reading material. the book is electronic. he's... just ok.
was genuinely excited to take a soc course after the first lecture he would countlessly single out a student and pick on them for the rest of the class. Never had an open discussion, and always referenced his personal accomplishments instead of the material. The lectures have nothing to do with the exams. Use public quizlets to survive good luck
You have to put in the work for Professor Calarco's class. He's laid back,he won't hound you for the work. It's a VERY interesting course and he has some goofy, fun ways of looking at each topic. I stayed on top of my work with Professor Calarco, reached out when I had questions, and didn't get anything lower than a 100.
Decent professor. It's not difficult but his lectures literally do not correspond to what is on tests - but they are really interesting. Make sure to read the text book!
You will have to read the textbook to pass the exams with a good grade, it is mandatory. the lectures will not cover even 30% of the exam material and get ready to hear hour long lectures about Paul Calarco. He is very arrogant and talks too much about himself. get a different professor
A lot of reading. Passionate about his field. Very easy A just do the work. Always responded to emails quickly.
While the work in this course is by no means difficult, you will find yourself dedicating hours every day to read the textbook and complete assignments. Discussion posts that are same-day mandatory are every couple days and 3+ assignments due every few days to make sure of attendance. Work is given over the weekend too, sorry part-time workers.
There is a lot of work associated with this class, especially at the beginning of the semester. He says the textbook is mandatory for quizzes inside it, but I never got the book or took the quizzes, and I passed, so take that how you will. I dont think he actually reads our work either. I would recommend only taking this course if it is your major.
Awful professor, shows videos and that's it. Tests are easy cause there unlimited time, online and no lockdown browser. You can read, but I would just google all the answers. Sign up for the class in person if you need the GEDI so you don't have to do the discussion boards online, he doesn't actually grade on discussions in person.
I would suggest taking the in person class and skipping all lectures/doing work during the class….beware of him screaming at you for doing work while watching a “very inspirational” documentary that will completely change your life. Attendance isn't mandatory so I would skip. Work was easy and I gave up on the textbook after chapter 4. Easy tests.
radical ideas what he teaches is completely different from the textbook only focuses on racism rather than actual cultures, every 3rd,said that white people are bad etc
The guy is a joke! He talks about himself mostly and has us watch videos. If you need to take the class just skip the lectures and do all the work online, it's pretty simple!
Find another professor.
Absolutely amazing. Spoke about various cultures with in-depth lectures and can crack a few jokes. Went to his yoga class, it was amazing. Take this professor if you want a good time.
Good professor overall. He is lecture heavy, so you want to go to all of his classes, but the class is relatively simple. Take notes and you will be fine.
He is a fun professor who loves yoga and social equality! What is there not to love. He provides inspirational lectures and helps students learn their culture.
Don't do it.
Terrible. Absolutely horrendous.
Do assignments online, don't bother going for boring class.
Really rude.
As long as your work is in on time (given a week for everything if not more) which is usually 2 assignments you're getting an A. There is no way to fail this class unless you literally did nothing. He is a lot and can come off as passive aggressive but attendance isn't required if that bothers you. Easily completable on your own. No late work taken
Does not hand out a single sheet of paper, talks about his life and what he did or is doing, gives work about what he thinks is true, not what actually is true. better off not interacting just do the work and complete it for the credit. Was forced to take this for the credits.
The first week of class I watched people walk to their advisors to drop out of his class. He wants you all to know he has a master's degree. His "lectures" have nothing to do with anything on Brightspace because he wants everyone to know his accomplishments, along with how much he dislikes people he does not agree with. (conservatives)
What ever you do, get a different professor for this class. His cultural diversity class isn't a class about cultural diversity, its a 50 minute lecture of how he hates his son, his achievements, and HIS opinions on race and ethnicity. AND GOD FORBID you pipe up for your own opinion on race and culture, if he doesn't like it, he doesn't like you.
he badussy!!
Before starting this course, I was concerned about the professor after seeing all the negative reviews. However, he was great! My course was a 6-week sprint. He still expected us to turn things in on the given due dates. Yet, he understood if some assignments were a few hours/days late because of the heavy coursework in a short period. Very nice!
