I think the reason cartledge is so well liked is because stats is really easy. He's boring at best and is constantly correcting himself from lessons that happened weeks prior. Also, God does he need better source material for his lame jokes. Hockey is great for the 50% of the population that likes the sport. The rest of us would rather forget it.
Course the exact same as Math 31 in high school, questions just become more challenging. Web assignments are simple. Exams are long and questions are difficult. Otherwise, he is willing to help and pretty funny... if you get his jokes.
I would recommend paying attention in class; if not for the material, then for the puns that usually go over everyone's heads. Makes class moderately interesting considering the subject, and explains everything very clearly. Don't buy the textbook unless you want extra practise and notes.
Did Calculus 31 AP, didn't d0 well. But his class is easier and shorter. Attend lecture to get/reinforce past ideas/concepts, and do not not study for the final like i did.It was all integrals page after page, which my brain decided to forget on test day. Provides online notes, if you copy the answers in class then you don't need the text.
Great prof. He presents statistics in a really clean and organized way. He's also pretty hilarious and a lot of the time, awkward. His notes are great, his explantation of concepts is clear, and his tests are very fair. I wish I had also taken MATH 113 with Paul. I would defiantly recommend him to everyone. Final was very fair and had no surprises.
Always very organized and explains concepts clearly. Exams are fair. Go over class examples and do practice midterms+finals and you shouldn't have a problem. The material is extremely boring, but his jokes make class a little more enjoyable. Would definitely recommend.
The course itself is quite challenging but I thought he did a fair job of teaching it. His jokes are a little dry as no one would usually get them but it made the class entertaining.
The subject of stats isn't easy to stay excited about in class, but he probably does the best job out of any teacher at keeping a kinda boring subject interesting. Horribly funny puns, and his tests are entertaining
Very funny and very kind. Very important to do all of the practice exams well in advance. Because it is consolidated, I cannot comment on "his" tests, but the questions he did have influence over did have theory basis. Try to come to classes.
He tried hard and clearly cared about the course. He gave good feedback on what people usually do wrong and what's going to be tested, he repeated the important stuff a lot which was essential. Otherwise his teaching itself was a little confusing and hard to follow as well as understand. It took me a while to get used to it.
WORST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD. He expects his students to already have a clear understanding of university level math, whether or not the last time you've taken a math class was in high school. He goes through the material at lightening speed, failing to explain ANYTHING in a step my step fashion. I taught myself the whole course thanks to my textbook
Paul was the worst prof I have ever had. He makes way to many dumb movie references that nobody understands and when you ask him questions he gives you arrogant responses. He does not provide clear instructions and his exams are too long for the allotted time. I would never take another class from him again. Taught myself the class from the text.
Paul is a great prof. He's really into stats & is able to convey that in a way that makes it easy to learn the material. I didn't use the textbook as I found his notes were easy to learn from. He's readily available if you need help in the class through emailoffice hours. He's really into pop culture which makes the class oodles of fun. A+ prof!
Paul was an awesome prof! Stats is a pretty dry subject, and even though some don't like his movie references, they help to keep the class a little more lively and focused. He is always available for help when needed and responds to e-mails quickly! He also was able to provide an example for every possible type of question you could run into.
Paul is an awesome prof! I see some people rate him as bad, but honestly it's the material that's tough, it's not the teaching. You just have to review and practice. He always does his best to explain everything and responds to emails almost immediately. I would definitely recommend Paul to anyone, great prof.
Paul really makes statistics much better than it seemed to be. He is always willing to help students and explains everything in this class well detailed. He goes over materials for the mid terms and finals which is awesome. I am happy I took his class and will recommend him for anyone. Attend his classes because new things are always said in class.
I had to withdraw his class, but certainly Paul is an amazing teacher. Even though English is not my first language of instruction he was always willing to help me and he always answered my questions with all the patience in the world. Very nice guy! I didn't understand most of his jokes tho... jajaja but it Is cause I didn't grew up in Canada.
Can't say much for exams and assignments as that is all standardized between all the STAT classes. He is a good lecturer. Explains the concepts well. Pay attention and make sure you understand everything as you go. Hilarious guy. Annoying hilarious but hilarious none the less. Makes class really fun. I'd take him again.
Definitely a great professor! Makes everything as clear as possible, and answers all questions asked! Makes tonnsss of pop-culture references and jokes in class, which definitely kept me awake during a 9AM stats class! Very helpful with reviewing the material for midterms and finals, even the labs! Would recommend this professor!
Uhm... i didnt really like Stats but he was an okay prof. Notes were confusing. I used the internet a lot and extra help from outside. He makes goofy jokes and yah.
He is flexible and sense of fun. However, if you take his course you may find his notes are simple, short and does not help much, I always download the other professor's notes who named FOK.?(don't remember the whole name).
He tries to be funny all the time, but not many people laughs aboutget his jokes. Test are EASY, like VERY EASY, if you do the exam practice you will gaurantee pass, even you're bad in mathstats, you will get ATLEAST 60-70. Actual exams are ALMOST same as practice exams, if you can ace the procedure in the practice exam, you will do very well.
I really liked him as a prof - he made so many hilarious jokes all the time that I always wanted to go to class. Unfortunately I'm horrible at stats, but that's not his fault. He always helped me when I went for extra help and he is a really nice guy. Definitely a good professor.
Paul was a great prof, really funny and engaging, while teaching what we actually needed to know. He replies to emails relatively quickly & is super helpful. Make sure you go to the Lab help sessions, I've heard it's easy to get the answers there. Paul's notes are often incomplete (as far as examples) so being present is recommended!
Calc 114 is a really difficult course especially if you haven't taken math 31 and math 35 in high school. He is a funny guy, makes a lot of dad jokes. He's a pretty nerdy guy but he makes math more interesting than it probably is. I would definitely recommend Paul as a prof if you have to take this class.
You don't really need to buy the textbook, didn't use it at all, used the internet to find most things i didn't know. The homework is time consuming but fairly easy to get 100% on. Mid-Term was very difficult. Paul says some good puns and keeps a STATS class as interesting as it can be, sometimes this can be trying, especially when trying to focus.
He is a very funny guy and tells many jokes through class (usually no one gets them lol) and he definitely has useful examples and tells you what is likely to be covered on the exams (2). Watching Khan Academy and other people on youtube work through examples helped me through this course. Overall he's a good prof but perhaps not for Math 114.
LOVE PAUL!!! He is a good instructor as well as helpful outside of the classroom. Calculus is a hard class especially if you didn't take it in highschool (take pre/post calc with Margie!!) but he makes it much more manageable. No heavy accent like a lot of the other profs which is always a good thing. Plus he's adorable, would recommend!
He tells many bad jokes during his lectures but it makes it funny, he has good notes however some of the ways he solves examples are a little confusing, if you took calc in high school or take pre-calc with Margie it makes it easier to follow along with him. Overall, decent prof.
Paul Cartledge is an alright professor. He understands what he is doing, however he skims over important topics that one needs to know for the final. He makes jokes in class (some that are bad, some that no one gets the reference), but he is always willing to help during office hours, and friendly guy too. Expect to do homework all the time.
Amazing prof. His extensive knowledge of the film industry makes his class examples far more applicable to real life. He is also extremely witty and will make stats bearable. Our exams were consolidated. Online assignments were easy marks. Paul prepares you very well for the lab assignments.
You wanted to go to lectures just to hear the puns he would make that day. Very passionate about statistics & very funny guy. Responds to emails quickly and clearly. Would definitely recommend taking Stats with Cartledge.
Really funny, but honestly don't bother listening to what he's saying, the class barely makes sense. He's a super swell guy, but the tests were impossible if you don't already have a solid calculus background. Would reccomend taking a math prep course or a tutor if you're taking his class. He doesn't explain what he's doing, he just does examples.
Passionate, funny teacher. Prepare you well for exams with clear notes which he posts online in advance. Great experience for a first year stats course.
Paul cartledge if you ever read this, please put spaces in your notes to write the examples. Please! There's barely any room to write anything. A chapter of notes should not be on one page.
Paul is the best. He's always there to help you without judgement. Final is absolutely brutal though. Take your time on the midterm too. Paul is the only reason I passed and even didn't hate Stats which was required.
Absolutely loves his jokes, and they definitely make class more enjoyable. Got a 50 on the midterm because I barely looked at my notes, but started to go see Paul and he was very helpful. Did better on the final and ended with a B- so can't really complain
A really great lecturer who honestly loves statistics, so any issues are really just with the course material.
Prof. Cartledge was very clear and engaging, which was really great in a stats course. He made this class very entertaining and interactive. The concepts were clear and well-explained and while there was a lot of homework I found it helpful.
Dr. Cartledge is a great prof for this course! Not only do his jokes make the material somewhat more bearable, but his tests aren't that bad either. Literally, if you do the practice mid term/ final exam you'll be good. Really helpful during office hours. There is a lab or homework due every week, which are pretty lengthy. Make sure to attend class
Paul is absolutely amazing, he is very clear in his explanations and puts it into simpler terms so that everyone can understand. Going to class is a must as he does many in class examples that supplement his notes to help you better understand the material. Overall, he made the class more enjoyable with his puns and pop culture references :)
Stats151 is ridiculously difficult but Paul makes it more bearable. Don't buy the textbook, just buy the online homework that comes with an e-text anyway.
His notes are useless for studying. I ended up looking stuff up on YouTube. His jokes are NOT funny at all. Nobody in my class laughed. If you listened close enough you could hear crickets chirping. Teaches ok. Midterm and final has a lot of tricks. If there's a right and a wrong way of doing things, he'll put both the answers on their to trick you
AVOID! He takes an entire class doing examples about his age but like 5 minutes on other ones. They don't make much sense in class and definately not when you try to study for exams. If you actually want to learn or kind of understand what's going on, take someone else.
Nope nope nope. Go drop his class right now and take someone else. Trust. Someone told me to drop his class who also took stats with him before and I didnt listen. Regretted it so much like a month into the course. If you want to save your GPA, avoid this guy. Also his jokes are not funny at all
Cartledge was really clear on what was expected and emphasized what was important or places that students usually had issues. Also filled the lecture with puns anywhere he could. Made boring material more interesting.
He was rude and disrespectful. Passive aggressive comments about students . Felt judged by him. Has no sense of etiquette, routine things like please and thank you. Squeaky voice makes his lectures unbearably irritating. Extremely jaded "jokes" , thinks he is the end of all things delightful. Does not answer in class questions respectfully.
Overall, paul is not bad. He speaks so fast and you have to concentrate on him every seconds or you will lose some important knowledge points. He is kind and humor, he usually tells some jokes to adjust the atmosphere. Notes are important to this course.
Paul is awesome and very punny. Jokes actually helped me relate to subject material. Need to go to class. Tests are the exact same format as the practice ones he gives you so use them as reference. Very accessible outside of class so take advantage. Honestly, anyone who hates on Paul has no sense of humour. Very enjoyable!
Amazing prof! Lectures were fast paced so make sure you pay attention. The course material is super challenging but Paul makes it a lot more clear and is super easy to follow (also very funny.) overall cares genuinely about student success so ask him any questions!
Stats 235 is not overly difficult conceptually BUT is massively packed with content. Attendance and reading over notes before doing assignments is crucial. Paul makes classes and content enjoyable - I'd rather go to his 8 am classes than any other profs 9 -10 am class. He's caring about his students, helpful, and punny as heck.
Make sure to do the practice exams, he goes over questions once and you have to try to grasp what he's saying. You have to keep up and make your own notes after and before lectures in order to understand everything. He jokes most of the class and he writes his notes in class but doesn't post them online.
I mean, STAT 151 in general is tough, and the midterm this semester had a brutal average of like 52% across all sections I believe. Paul speaks very fast which makes it easy to zone out if you aren't following along. He is approachable outside of class for sure though, so be sure to use his office hours if you need it.
If you can get past his bad, forced puns and his sometimes strange sense of humour, he is a really good prof. He stressed a lot during the course that he was teaching beyond the course, that he wanted us to use what he taught in our future careers which I really appreciated.
THIS CLASS WAS SO HARD. Midterm had such a low average and STAT isn't curved so we all failed. Read the textbook and do the optional homework for extra credit because, trust me, you need anything you can get to boost your mark. However, Paul is a funny guy and his teaching is good - it's just so hard to pay attention because STAT is a dry topic.
real mvp
Paul was pretty good. He gives plenty of examples and goes over everything in detail. Sometimes he uses terminology that can be confusing and not realize that it an be confusing but he always asks if anyone has questions. He also loves movies and makes plenty of pop culture references.
Our class had the lowest midterm average (50.1%) of all classes, but literally every class blew it on the midterm. He told us that's an unusually low average so idk. I dropped because I couldn't risk the F. That said, Paul is such a nice guy and really truly wants to help you - go to his office hours, he's so approachable.
Paul was a relatable, humorous, & intelligent professor. Super approachable and down to Earth, and really cares about his students. That being said, this is a difficult class. The homework and labs can be a bit excessive, and the midterm was very difficult with an average of 50% without curving, leaving half of students in a bad position.
Paul had awesome jokes and really good examples for statistics 151. me he actually recognized me on campus which was nice, I found his homework was reasonable but this is a prof that you definitely can't miss class for. 10/10 would go bad for teacher. would take extra courses in stats if I required them. If you're reading this Paul, hit me up.
Great prof, good at teaching, midterm was easy and the final was fair Pls no more puns tho paul i know youre reading this : ok well maybe just a little
Cartledge was VERY helpful and approachable outside of class. His jokes were enjoyable, but distracting at times. HARD midterm, decent final if you know what you're doing. Online assignments were awesome because if you do them you get 100%. Hated the labs because working with people you don't know can be frustrating. STAT 151 makes you work.
Engaging and well-structured lectures. If you show up to class and understand how to approach each given example, you won't be surprised on the exams; the questions are straightforward and fair. The textbook is helpful but not necessary. So many puns! At least 10 per 50 minute class. The frustration of having to listen to the keeps you awake.
Constant puns through out the lecture. Makes the lectures fun and goes through a lot of examples. Definitely need to keep up to understand everything. His notes are much more to the point than the text (I found the text much easier to learn from). Gives group work for labs.
Hated the class and hated his jokes. He told the class to email him if anyone had lab members that dropped out of the class just in case we felt overwhelmed so I emailed him and told him that BOTH my lab members dropped the class and I was by myself and he told me that there was nothing he could do for me. I'm just glad that this class is over
Paul is great so far for stats. His lectures are good, since he always has puns that make 9 AM class a bit less boring. His notes are concise and to the point, but this helps with studying as they only have important info/examples. Sometimes class is boring, but it is stats lol. Great intro to stats prof for first years.
Tries to make lectures interesting with constant puns and jokes. Very nice guy, accessible in office hours and over email. However his notes were sometimes too concise to the point, that it didn't teach me some of the important techniques for the midterm exam. Highly recommend that you also read other profs' notes for reference.
He's super chill and nice guy, very approachable and willing to explain anything! However, it was SO much more beneficial to look at other's prof's lecture notes. They are much clearer and it seems they highlight tested concepts, whereas with Paul he doesn't emphasize what you need to know. Stats is easy, just gotta practice!
Cartledge is very good for stats. Puts lots of puns into the class to make a somewhat dry class (9AM for me) interesting, his notes are good and concise, and lots of variations of his examples are on the midterm that help you study. The class really isn't that hard, and the labs and homework help your mark. But stats 151 isn't curved!
He is a really funny teacher if you appreciate puns and pop-culture references. Give great examples in class. You have to put in a lot of your own work into doing well in this class. His lecture notes are not as in-depth as the other professors, so I would recommend using the textbook and other professors notes as supplementary notes
TAKE PAUL!! He makes stats interesting & engaging. His notes are AMAZING!! His office hours are awesome & he's so helpful outside of class. He guy genuinely wants you to do well & is willing to help you get to where you want to be. Supportive guy-- you don't come across many profs like Paul. TAKE PAUL you won't regret it
Paul made stats super fun and interesting to be in! It's a terrible course but Paul definitely makes it better. Beware of the group lab projects as they turn out to be absolute gong shows and the midterm is super hard and honestly unfair. The final is much better! Do all the homework assignments as they're an easy 100%.
Very energetic, hilarious, and passionate about Stats, makes the class bearable and interesting compared to other profs. Sometimes goes a bit fast in his lectures typically and finishes the chapter reviews before the other Stats profs and then reviews for longer. He posts his notes however they aren't very detailed so go to the lectures!
Great prof all around. He is probably the best stats prof because: he speaks good english, he is funny in lectures and just makes an all around hard course somewhat interesting.
dude loves movies
Drops the occasional joke to keep things lively, and speaks clearly. Overall great prof.
Very good prof, good humor. Hardest class I ever had to take, but he made me want to show up every morning and work.
Stats isn't a walk in the park, but Paul tries his best to incorporate his humour, pop culture references and all around geekiness to make it slightly more entertaining. He speaks very clearly, and is helpful during office hours to clear up topics during class (he can go a bit quick). Attendance is mandatory as his note pack examples are left blank
Paul makes Stat lectures bearable although sometimes he talks really fast that it's hard to keep up. His lecture examples are great, I just recommend doing a lot of hands on examples with him. I find his jokes really funny which help you to focus on him and on what he's teaching. 1 midterm & 1 final determines takes up 80% of your mark.
Paul may or may not have a thick Russian accent so beware of that lol. He is always trying to make the class laugh and make stats less dull. He makes a ton of pop culture references so celebrate the ones you get. You have to work hard if it's your first time learning stats but Paul is the best prof I've had at the U(A) and he loves hockey.
Paul is such a nice and funny guy but his lectures are always confusing. Never really understood what was going on though. His midterm was BRUTAL but final was a little easier, still tough. His notes do not help though, so you might want to seek help from others. He does have notes online, but examples he fills in class so DONT skip
He is super helpful in office hours and explains concepts very effectively in class focusing on the theory portion in stats. His notes are quite condensed so would recommend doing extra practice problems using Simchi 's notes. Overall he made a dry course very interesting.
Hated stats, but paul was alright. He tries to make a boring class fun, but sometimes falls short. You really need to continuously do practice problems to really get the material though, and there are almost weekly assignments and labs (which are basically just really long assignments). Good guy though overall
Paul was an awesome prof. He spoke very clearly and his notes were helpful, although he does the examples in class. He doesn't do a lot of short examples (like you would encounter on the exams) but rather one or two long ones. Never had to read the textbook or consult other resources other than him because he was that good at explaing topics.
He is very knowledgeable and accessible, however the tests are tough. This is very true for some international students who are not used to multiple choice exams. Talking about that, English is not my mother tongue and this was my first term at UofA. I had a hard time to understand what he said because he speaks too fast!!!!
Very nice prof even through he talks Very fast in lectures. The course itself is challenging but the tests are easy if you know what your doing.
Paul often cracks jokes during class which definitely helped make the class less boring. He goes over plenty of examples during class and is happy to answer questions both in class and over email. He posted practice midterms and finals which was very helpful when prepping for exams. Textbook is extremely helpful and reader friendly!
He's EXTREMELY funny, however, he says so many jokes it can be distracting when you are frantically writing down notes and trying to wrap your head around the material. Don't waste your time with the textbook imo, just go to the stats extra help and USE OFFICE HOURS. Exams will probably kill you, labs are annoying and tedious- first ones the worst
His lectures are literally all just sit and write the problem solutions with him as he talks and talks and talks. It's hard to follow if you aren't skimming through the material in advance. The homework and labs are tedious but easy marks. You won't do well unless you practice. I had to fail the midterm to realize that.
paul is a great guy, a guy you wanna go for a beer with after class... he plans jokes to make stats more fun and is an all round caring person. stats as a class is very tough, exams are the same for all classes so its a pretty hard go and pauls notes aren't great and he didn't really click for me, up to you basically just be ready to work
Makes tons of dumb jokes, not funny enough to compensate for the extreme difficulty of stats :(
Personally, I wouldn't take his class for an intro stats class. You really need to have consistent attention throughout the semester to make sense of the content. It was often hard to follow. I found that if I had questions he is extremely helpful and cares about his students
Paul is an OK prof, he is clear and attempts to make jokes to make the material a little more enjoyable. Beware that the material they give you is not really that important for exams. The profs like to give a lot of fluff and once you weed through it, the course isn't actually that hard. The first half of the course is trash but it gets alot easier
Paul is a very understanding prof as I was hospitalized a day before the midterm and he allowed me to differ the weight of my midterm to the final exam. I really appreciated the stress that was lifted off my shoulders. I did not enjoy the content of STATS 151, but had to take it for my degree. Would not take STATS again, but enjoyed Paul as a prof.
Paul is a hilarious prof. He makes a pop culture pun about every 30 seconds and clearly attempts to make stats - a very dry course - fun and tolerable. Stats can be quite difficult, but if you put in some effort you should do fine. Without Paul, stats would've been extremely boring.
I never thought I would look forward to go to an 8 am class. His lectures are very lively and full of puns! which makes the course ( and waking up early for a class) tolerable. He explains the topics very thoroughly and makes sure everyone in the class understands the concept (of course with puns and jokes).
Solid prof trys to make a boring class enjoyable
No just no. Notes at beginning were pretty good, as it went on the notes werent as great and not enough examples that you could hardly understand how to do the homework. He also has the worst tas marking homework
I must say, I was thoroughly surprised with Paul. He really puts in work to make Stats interesting, and he succeeds at it. Out of all of the statistics professors I have had (1 other), he is by far my favorite. He really works to make sure the concepts are understood, rather then just being able to plug formulas.
Over explains almost everything, talks very fast and is hard to follow. His notes take a while to get used to, there is a lot of information presented unnecessarily detailed. There are little things he talks about for half a class and then says well but u really dont have to worry about that kinda confusing, feel like Im wasting my time
Compared to other profs, his notes are mediocre and his teaching style consists of a lot of jokes (an attempt to engage students). Sometimes you cant even tell if he's telling a joke or if he's teaching and he LOVES his movies (this ain't a film study class but it may feel like it if you're in it). Use the other prof's notes with his when reviewing
Paul was a pretty solid choice for stats. His notes are very condensed and explain topics pretty well. The course itself is difficult as both the midterm and final are consolidated exams. He provided extra examples for us for difficult topics and he made reviews for both the midterm and final exams. Go to class though, it really helps!
Class is actually easier than 151 as there are less concepts to know. I barely passes 151 but did pretty decent in this (not on the final though but that was my fault). Go to class! take notes, and ask questions, it helps. Paul makes lots of nerdy jokes which makes the class go by faster. Overall it was pretty good.
A solid prof for stats.
His nickname should be mushroom because he is a fun guy.
Paul did not fit my learning style. I found his notes to be very messy and he wouldnt post them online. Some students liked his puns, but for me it made the examples in the lecture confusing. I had a hard time following along in his class. Stats is an overall difficult course but I felt his lectures lacked structure. I ended up dropping his class
Paul is a funny prof, but he OVER-EXPLAINS everything. He talks in almost a constant drone, and occasionally stops to emphasize something that's really important. I wish he would try to simplify and focus what he says more, so we're not just listening to a storybook. Questions are equally wordy and confusing
Oh boy, he's tough. He goes VERY fast, and if you aren't there for each class, you're done. He does not post completed notes online, and he tends to make everything way more complicated than it needed to be. The textbook was WAY easier to learn about Stats than he was. Be aware of group projects, get ready to print lots of fill in the blank papers.
Regardless of your prof, stat151 is one of the toughest uni courses. However, Paul made it more bearable. Midterm and Final exam with labs and online homework worth 20%. Study hard and become a master with the material and you'll do fine. Listen in class and practice practice practice the material. One of the better choices of prof for stat151
To be honest, I absolutely hated stats in high school and first year. But after i took this class with Paul I actually started to enjoy stats and now i don't have stat-phobia anymore. Keep up with his lecture notes and you will be fine for all exams. Yeah but the assignments and labs for this course are killers.
Wrote a terrible midterm, admitted it was a terrible exam, far too difficult, didnt scale it but took off lowest scoring questions, leaving half the people with 40's and half with 80's. He overexplained everything, making it difficult to understand what we actually needed to know. Doesnt post noted online.
Terrible prof, would not recommend. Spends more time telling jokes than teaching. Expects you to know how to use all the of the formulas that you've never seen before, google taught me more than he did. Makes everything seem very easy in class, and then the exams slap you in the face with reality.
Terrible test creater, if he spent as much time creating fair exams as he does making bad jokes, it might be good. Exams are specifically designed to mislead students with every possible mistake that can be made as a possible answer. This punishes students who have a decent understanding and stripes someone from any confidence in their answers.
Honestly a solid professor, heard terrible things about stats but Paul made it way more interesting. He did tell a lot of jokes but it kept me from falling asleep every class. Would recommend.
Exams that were made were terrible. Extremely difficult resulting in averages for both midterm and final barely above 50% after being scaled. He also didn't want to acknowledge that he made awful exams and inferred that the students were in the wrong for not understanding the material instead of the poorly constructed exams.
Really clear during lectures, repeats the important things in lectures so you know certain questions will be on exams. Lots of puns which makes you want to pay attention. He doesn't upload the completed notes but he brings them all to class and you can take photos after lecture so attendance isn't important unless you take detailed notes.
Lots of bad jokes and puns. Lecture consists of going over example problems and is very terminology heavy, which is bad if you miss a class or dont remember the name of a specific term. Information gets repeated several times in different ways to help reinforce the point but in the end it can actually make things more confusing.
He goes super fast in class. He will stop to ask if we have any questions but he lectures so fast its hard to absorb anything in. He has high expectations for his class so it makes you feel kinda dumb when he says everyone should know how to do this haha. Class isnt curved yet final will be made harder if midterm average is high. Ew!
Stats at UofA is hard despite of which teacher you decide to choose as your teacher. It all depends on the work you decide to put into the course. If you skip class or don't pay attention, you will fall behind. You will have to be in groups for labs with people you do not know. Paul is one of the best STATS teachers at UofA. He teaches well!
Tries to be funny in class and explains the important bits way too fast for one to grasp the concept.
Paul is awesome
Paul's classes weren't terrible to go to as he throws in lots of jokes and puns to try and make a subject as dry as stats not as boring. However, his notes are relatively hard to follow and the examples he uses are somewhat confusing.
His notes were confusing, vague and were not informative in terms of understanding the material. They were more like, "copy definition, paste definition". On top of that, none of the notes were uploaded online. I am only giving him a 1/5 instead of 0 because his jokes were occasionally chuckle worthy and seemed like a nice guy.
Not a bad choice for stats. I didn't mind his "jokes" but he got pretty condescending sometimes, often repeating like "people always get this wrong but it's so easy I can't understand how". Otherwise his notes are solid and lecturing above average. Textbook not needed since assignment questions are posted but assignments take days to complete.
On the first day of class he spoke with a Russian type accent for at least 30 minutes and then said 'Well enough of that fake accent". It was hilarious. I would highly recommend taking STAT 151 with Paul. Go to class and take notes because he doesn't post them. The homework assignments are long so don't leave those to the last minute either.
Mans just amazing. Over three years I've done at the U of A, I have never understood a course so darn well. His dad jokes only make it more entertaining and if you pay attention 100% during the lectures, those long homework assignments are a breeze. I took him summer term (no lab partners) and found the hw assgns helpful asf. BEST TEACHER NO CAP!!!
As a person who is horrible at all things math I can 100% recommend him for stats. The course is quite dry but he does the best possible way of brightening up the lectures with his jokes. I took it in the summer with him so it was a little fast paced but yet again, hes an amazing prof so he did a great job at teaching us.
IMPORTANT THING: GO TO CLASS. or the notes will make no sense. And make sure FOLLOW EVERY WORD HE SAYS in the class otherwise you won't understand him. Last thing, SLOW HIM DOWN IF YOU FIND HE IS TOO FAST. JUST STOP HIM BY ASKING QUESTIONS. Then you may get a great grad.
He's amazing as a person but not as a teacher who is teaching entry level stats.
Stat 151 is sometimes unbearable, but he actually makes lectures alright. Solid prof, funny guy. Usually enjoyed going to class. However, if you struggle with math, I wouldn't recommend as he goes fast, but otherwise would totally recommend.
Paul is great. Very funny and engaging. there is a lot of assignments but theyre not very hard and give you multiple attempts. Thanks Paul
Paul was an excellent professor who made class engaging and fun. He would joke all the time and his jokes were always content related. Hes also very understanding and patient so if you need help dont be shy to ask. He goes over a lot of content in class so if you dont go you will be lost when it comes to examples he goes over specifically.
As far as material goes, it's the same for every other stats class at the UofA. However, Paul really does try to make it engaging for everyone. I am not a math person by any means, but I did better than I could've thought. Yes, he explains everything better in class, but you should be going to class anyways. Highly recommend!
His jokes were funny at first but got really annoying really fast. You can tell which questions on exams are made by him based on whether or not there's a forced pop-culture reference. Btw, those questions require a bit more reading comp to solve due to the fact that the joke he put in there distracts from the substance of the question
Paul is super engaging & makes jokes to add interest. He explains material a lot better than just his notes & does examples in class, so going to lectures is a good idea. I sometimes felt like Paul didn't explain stuff as well as he could've because he seems like he "just gets it" easily & can't break it down to an intro stats class level
He was a good prof. But his notes are not the best to study from so reading the textbook or another profs notes would be helpful. He explained the material well and made lots of joke (not all were funny).
Great prof
He is a very funny professor if you also like movies and pop culture because you might get more of his references, personally they made the lecture easier to attend. Using the textbook plus attending class helps a ton. He is very helpful and is fast at responding to emails. I would highly recommend him if you need this class!
Paul is a really good prof he made sure that the content was understood but he does go fast. He makes lots of bad jokes which kind of livens the class up a bit. Midterm was wack but I think most of it is pretty straight forward if u know ur stuff. Statlab groups are a hit or miss so anyone reading this don't be that group member horror story :"))
I believe Paul is a great, engaging professor with great humour and wit. Stats is difficult and all 151 sections are the same despite the teacher so the grade mark down ect is not up to him. He really makes the course more enjoyable and makes it easier than other profs have in the past. if you have him as a choice for stat 151 chose him!!
Paul's lectures are rather dry because of the material, but he always puts in extra effort through adding jokes and puns to his notes. There are 4 labs (group projects), online homework assignments, and a midterm and final in this course. You need a strong understanding of the english language to take this course because questions are very specific
I loved taking Paul's class. I hated stats as a course but I would not have wanted to take it with anyone else. Paul is hilarious and genuinely cares about his students. I had so many issues with lab group members and Paul always helped me. 100% would take again. I don't think I would have done as well with any other prof.
Professor Paul is a really nice guy but I felt he had a tendency to overcomplicate things at times. That being said, he was very helpful in office hours and there are plenty of practice exam questions to familiarize yourself with the course material. Wize exam prep online was my hero. It is specifically for Uof A and helps simplify everything!
His notes suck.
He tends to overcomplicate things and makes everything ten times harder to understand. His notes are terrible, they're like 2 pages for every chapter. The only reason why stats was okay was because you can look at all the other profs' notes.
Stats 151 is a brutal class but taking it with Paul was a great choice. His notes are a little over complicated but he always wants to help students. He really cares about the wellbeing of students. If you have to take stats, take it with him.
Agree with others that the notes are a bit brief/complicated but overall is a very caring prof who wants students to succeed. Makes MANY jokes (some better than others) which can brighten lectures. Success in stats requires a lot of work but he is willing to help you if you're willing to put in the effort. Gives quick responses to emails etc.
Paul is a good instructor. He adds jokes to his lectures which makes the lectures enjoyable for sure. His office hours are great for understanding the material. He definitely makes you work for answers though, but the feedback he gives is very good. Overall he made stat 151 enjoyable for sure. Would recommend.
Great guy, makes lectures interesting. He cares deeply about his work and his students and is more than happy to respond to any questions you have. Found he overcomplicates things a bit though as I seemed to understand better when I taught myself stats. Would recommend though, he's a clear speaker and very entertaining.
I did him as a Spring course during the global lockdown. He never failed to make sure there was always a huge bulk of work for students and assignments and labs due every week. There were 16 assignments in total only worth 10%, 4 labs worth 10%, a 30 question multiple choice midterm worth 30% and a 50 multiple choice exam worth 50%.
Had him for the spring during the pandemic, Paul was a great prof and always added jokes and puns in to make it more engaging. His notes are a little dry as they are only like 2 pages a chapter and were mostly confusing. If you do the assignments and labs you'll pass.
Paul is an ok prof he does make a lot of jokes and puns during his lecture which makes it more enjoyable. However some of his midterm questions are quite hard, and his notes are too short and he tends to over complicate examples. Tip: study hard because the final is worth 50% of your mark.
Paul is hilarious but his teaching style is garbage. Lectures are super fast. A lot, a lot of reviewing on your own if you want to understand anything. The saving grace was midterm was similar to his practice test.
I never look up professors here, nor have I ever wrote a review, but this guy Paul Cartledge changed that for me. I have never disliked any professor as much as Paul. He spends more time making puns for class than improving his teaching ability. I don't understand all the positive reviews because everyone I've talked to has the same feeling.
Not a bad prof but extremely disrespectful towards students. He is rather emotionless and unsympathetic. Threw a curveball midterm and had it start at 7:30. Does not care for his students.
Paul is very funny and makes lectures interesting, however a lot of the concepts are really hard to understand and he doesn't always give them justice. He's a nice guy and is always available to ask questions.
Horrendous professor. Cannot explain topics well and thinks that every student is as smart as he is. Every time you ask a question that you don't understand in class he says to go and watch the video again instead of explaining it during the live lectures. Does too much puns instead of focusing on his teaching skills.
Get ready to teach yourself. Our zoom calls went from 250 to below 100 in about 2 weeks. His lectures and practice questions were nothing like the midterm or final. Labs weren't very hard at all. He sends out an email after every single class, sometimes 2 or 3... Tries to be funny but lectures you'll fall asleep. Use Fok as your Stats prof.
Just wanna say his responses to questions were always very vague and dry, it really bothered me.
A stickler for the rules, does not care about student health, and for online classes he enforces the exam proctoring like the secret police from soviet Russia, The majority of my class got flagged for cheating and academic dishonesty because he did not like the area recordings
I found his lectures funny and engaging (even though his sense of humour is kinda weird). I found the homework and in class questions harder than the actual exam questions but in turn I was super prepared. The tests were very fair. The only thing is that he gives really cryptic and vague feedback through email (though he does reply pretty quick).
Paul: great taste in movies, questionable sense of humor (but the effort is extraordinary), and pretty decent choice for STAT 151. Can be a little hard to follow but encourages questions. Super accessible- fast replies. If you want to put the work in, he wants you to succeed. Statistics is boring- but I promise you that it's not with Paul.
Paul is incredibly organized and transparent with his students. At every point of the semester, he communicated exactly where we were, what to do next, and answered every question. Very accessible outside class and replies with ninja speed. However, I found his lectures confusing and hard to digest. Notes were concise but just not my style.
I can't blame the professor for the difficult content, thats on me. He's a really funny guy though, made me smile a lot:)
This was my second try taking stats after taking a W a couple years prior. I was petrified of taking stats but Paul's lectures were always entertaining. He always quickly responded to questions I had and always supported and encouraged student success. I'd suggest not wasting any time with the textbook and do the practice problems on eClass instead
Paul is a really nice guy and had great communication throughout the term. He always tried his best to answer questions during online lectures and wasn't demeaning when he answered. Online homework assignments were fair and the group lab projects were pretty easy if you worked together and read all the instructions. Paul allowed notes during final.
As with any mathmatic course, you're gonna need to study a lot, but Paul makes statistics surprisingly enjoyable. Expect a lot of puns in his lectures.
Professor Cartledge is a very enthusiastic instructor. He is clearly passionate about statistics and makes funny references or puns to help engage the class. However, I found the class very challenging despite his instruction. You'll need to study real hard to pass his class.
Acts like a tyrant for online exams and comes up with obscure requirements/policies (show under your desk cause there could be someone under there, like what?". All these "good reviews" are definitely a lie, I was looking forward to a good stats prof. I was very wrong.
Decent in lectures, attempts to make an 8am class less dry which is nice. But for the exam, even though it's open book, additionally to the regular SEM procedures, extreme procedures such as under the table must be shown. Quite the unnecessary and inappropriate request.
By far the worst prof I've ever had to endure. He enjoys giving students hard, frustrating times. He makes every exam unbearably hard, and puts even more stress by spending the next three weeks weeding out any cheaters. He accuses people of cheating for the littlest things, and makes you waste time trying to prove innocent.
Overzealous when it comes to online test taking restrictions. This is STAT151, not a Mensa entrance exam. Jokes get excessive and obnoxious in class quite quickly as well.
Dr. Cartledge disguises himself as a good prof at the beginning of the semester but that is far from the truth. His examples often refers back to numbers from multiple chapters/weeks ago which makes concepts really difficult to understand. He is super stringent on exam proctoring and blames students for low averages.
Professor Cartledge tries to be funny in class, but quite frankly his humor is extremely annoying. He wastes hours of students time on absurd cheating accusations. Not to mention his lecture examples are awful and he blames poor test performance on students. Stay away from his class.
I was excited to take stats because it seemed interesting but unfortunately Paul ruined that for me. Something about his teaching methods just doesn't seem right for a university level course. He would fit in more as a high school teacher with his style. I will never be able to look at stats the same way after taking this course with him.
Flagged on SEM twice even though I never cheated on anything, followed all the procedures completely, and even took into consideration every recommendation given to maximize academic integrity. At this point I am frustrated and tired. This is no way to treat your students for giving you the utmost respect for every class and session.
Another person to take the fall with the preposterous SEM system. Not only does this take a toll on our mental health preparing for the actual final, but also drives into our time post school to deal with a situation that shouldn't even be there in the first place. Please university do something about this class, and this teacher.
Paul made everyone's life 10x harder than any other prof during a very difficult time. The man straight up said that COVID "isn't a big deal" & refused to accommodate impacted students. Extremely disrespectful & gave a final that like >50% failed because of a bunch of bizarre reading comp. questions yet told us that it's "our fault for doing bad".
The fact that to pass STAT 235 you must get a weighted average of 40 across all exams is inappropriate and destroys any mental strength a student has in this class, coupled with the pain of other courses in engineering, Paul tries his best, but the course is almost unbearable due to the notes not being helpful for any of the exam questions.
Paul is the kind of professor who has poor teaching abilities and blames the students for not understanding the material. He uses lecture time more for puns than actual useful material. Be prepared to teach yourself stats.
There's way too much hate for Paul. He's a great professor. He always gave all of the information that was needed, there wasn't any point where he didn't give enough information about exams/ assignments. It's true that he's tough, and he can come off a bit rude, but it seems like it's mostly because he wants everyone to do well in his class.
Everything is explained so poorly. Weeks of lectures can easily be summarized by Khan academy. Nice guy but wastes too much class time confusing students with puns. The course material is fine but the way the course is run is horrible for some reason
Half the class failed the midterm (50% median and 51% average) and everyone found the final even worse. These are people who put so much into the course not slackers. Instead of reevaluating the way the course is he blames the students for just not knowing the stuff. Some of the smartest hardest working students I know got Cs
Paul is the type of professor where everyone is wrong but him no matter the circumstances. His class averages are low, around 2.0 which is a C. Stats shouldn't be this hard of a class but Paul just seems to make it worse.
I have pretty neutral feelings towards Professor Cartledge. He seems like a nice guy and definitely puts effort into teaching the class. Responds quickly to emails and forum questions but is not always super helpful.
I have passed the course with flying colors, unfortunately there's any extra component to this that I have to get a combined average for my total exams, and I am below that, thus it means that I have failed the course. This is completely stupid and it shows the department's character that they just want your money.
Please avoid this prof at any cost. Even during a global pandemic he does not stop giving unnecessary trouble. I had my SEM flagged every exam and every time I tell him to review it he finds that the problem was on his side. I mean what does he think? is some one is hiding under my bed to tell me answers? His notes are also messy. AVOID THIS GUY!!
Paul's a great prof, he gives lots of examples and resources to make sure his students understand the material. He's VERY thorough with proctored exams and he may go too in depth for basic content to the point that it's confusing and irrelevant to exams. However, his puns are awesome and always lighten the mood especially in online lectures.
Paul somehow makes stats entertaining (he has really impressive puns), but his feedback is seriously lacking. It's pretty vague because he doesn't want to spoon-feed you, but if you're seriously struggling then it's just frustrating. Regardless, to pass any stats class, all you have to do is study religiously and you'll be fine.
Avoid taking stats with the guy. Ruined stats for probably the rest of my life. He butchers the lectures and forces his jokes on the students. I will never be able to enjoys stats after taking his class.
He goes through material very slowly. The examples he does in class use values from weeks ago and it makes it hard to follow what hes doing. I just used Dr. Foks notes all semester.
I took 252 as a spring class and condensed down that way, there is a lot of work for sure. As someone who has taken and failed multiple stats classes he made the subject a lot more approachable than any prof Ive had before because he takes it slow and has a very positive demeanor.
Probably the worst professor I've had so far at university and it'll be hard to top this guy. I think I learned more about bad jokes than stats in this class. There is dry content than there is learning stats with Paul dry. Better be ready to teach yourself everything you need to know about stats guys.
As someone who is not very math skilled and only took this course because I am required to, I sadly would not recommend. He is kind and clearly very knowledgeable, but I found him impossible to learn from. He speaks to his students not in a beginners sense, but more so like all his students are math majors. Unfortunately I had to withdraw :(
Paul is generally an on choice, I just happen to be very mathematically incompetent. Although, he can be pretty hard to follow sometimes because he has a tendency to get excited about the topic and then go into way to much detail for what this class is. I appreciate that he tries his best to keep you engaged.
Firstly, dont buy the digital textbook, its a waste of time and it doesnt work. Secondly, Dr. Cartledge is so engaging and upbeat in his lectures. I am horrible at listening in class, but I never had a problem with Dr. Cartledge and he moved at the perfect pace and kept my attention.
Paul is a sweetheart, and his great jokes make those 8 am lectures fly by, it really helps keep students engaged. He is very concise (his notes are too) and he also sends out a lot of email reminders which is soo helpful for staying on top of course content. The fun examples he uses add some spice to what is a traditionally 'boring' class.
He's a very nice prof, very funny and cracked jokes which helped lighten the mood. Was also very accessable during office hours, sent out class summary emails, lots of resources, etc. My one complaint would be that as someone who isn't a math person, I found his teaching style a bit difficult to follow & his notes were very brief.
Paul's response to emails is "lOoK aT yOUr NoTeS." His examples in class are also very hard to follow as he will recall values from weeks ago. He wastes a lot of class time on jokes that 1-3 people understand and to make up for it, he will show annotated notes for an example instead of teaching and going through the problem. Don't waste your time.
A lot of lecture time was wasted on jokes and nonsense unrelated to course material, it is nice to keep the class upbeat and engaged, but it was too much. He is definitely passionate about statistics, but the notes provided are cluttered, and he rarely explained what he was doing when working on examples for the class.
Paul is a nice guy, who tries his hardest to make his lectures entertaining which is more than I can say for other prof's , except when it comes to his teaching style, it's less than ideal. He teaches at you, instead of teaching to you. He acts as if you are a 3rd year stat's student and not learning it for the first time. Would not recommend.
He tried so hard to make it enjoyable. But it just wasn't. He taught the course like we were statisticians and this was review. The notes were a godsend once you understood the material, but it was all summarized. Not a fan of the raw grading, and the textbook has no use. All in all this was my least favourite university class yet.
Stopped attending lectures a month and a half in, and found that using Prof. Fok's notes and attending decima robinson every thurs saved me. His notes aren't good, and it's hard to follow him in class. I don't blame him because stats can be very hard to follow in general. He didn't give good solutions to emails, so I just emailed prof Fok instead.
Makes lots of jokes, and keeps you decently entertained. The course itself is difficult but our average on the midterm was higher than other sections. This class is not curved
This professor wasn't helpful when I would email him with concerns. Made the class much more difficult.
"if i could, i'd give you a 0. but I can't so i give you, a 1." had to drop Paul's class, his lectures and notes were not helpful at all. I was always average at math but the midterm was nothing like our notes, which were vague and like a sparknotes summary. i dropped the class before the final bc just thinking about his class made me cry. 0/10
This class could have been bearable. However, having Paul as a prof took me to dark places. If I could change anything about last semester it would be to switch from his cursed class. I find it hard to believe a professor can make a class this horrible, but Paul achieved this with flying colors. I hope this menace to society can sleep at night.
Prepare to watch 3 hours of pre-lectures for every 1 1/2 hour lecture (just enroll in Rosana's course, as she will teach you everything in the pre-recorded lectures). Every class example's numbers are pulled from last week's example, which get confusing as the course progresses. Expect no sympathy despite the pandemic and the challenges it brings.
Taking Paul's class this semester has been a grand mistake. He seems to assume everyone is already an expert at the course material and his lectures feel more like a review than a time where the concepts are taught. He moves fast in notes and focuses more on computations than actually teaching the meaning behind the concepts. Quizzes are hard.
Please reconsider before taking a class with Paul. He teaches as if we are all third year math majors. He does not take any time to explain everything he talks about or elaborate on variables all too well. The notes and videos provided were entirely unhelpful and I did not learn anything helpful. 100/10 would not take with Paul again
Paul is a nice guy, and tries to help if you seek help. BUT, he does teach in a rather indigestible manner. Instead of venting on here, I will productively redirect you to some useful (essential) resources if you're in this class... and wish to do well/pass. Best wishes comrade. youtube: JBstatistics Ace Tutors Prof. Essa statisticshowto . com
Pauls a good guy and is so hilarious, but his lectures aren't the best. He just assumes you already know certain things, and examples grab from previous examples far back in your notes, which is confusing. He's a great help during office hours, and really wants his students to succeed. Found myself relying on the textbook, other profs, and hope.
Thorough notes that contain the information you need. If taking this class I suggest actively attending the lectures, it makes things easier. He's very funny too.
Nothing special about this prof. I appreciate the efforts he makes with his jokes but lectures are still very dry. He glosses over complex topics so basically, you'll just have to figure it out. If you do lots of practice then you should be fine. You'll also have access to other professors' notes.
His lectures are good. If it wasn't at 8AM I would've attended more of them. There are so many resources on the course page for this class that you can really do it in a self directed manner if you prefer. He genuinely cares about his students, even emailing the day before the final as a reminder. Labs were bad because group members wouldn't help.
Honestly overhated. I think he's pretty funny. Like, for an 8am stats class, I don't know what can be expected. I'd go to the other prof for notes tho
he did his best to make the lectures entertaining, and his notes were clear and concise (though if you need more detail, use the other profs notes). the examples he used in class would often draw on examples from previous classes which made things confusing. overall a good prof for the nightmare that is stat 151 for many of us
Did not enjoy this class. Paul was disrespectful to students on a handful of occasions. Despite this, he did have excellent pop culture references and did offer students the resources required to succeed. If your goal is to get an A+ then go to class even if you dislike his personality!
paul is a really funny guy and makes jokes that reference things that are so old basically nobody gets.his math jokes are good once in a while though. he explains things not thoroughly at all and does examples but doesn't really explain his steps. it was really hard to follow along at first and I usually watched organic chem tutor for clarification
Always use old example, which ask you to remember all the material he coverd during the course.
Content Heavy, and he would also go really fast and skip steps so I would always get lost. Would only reccommend if you already have some background knowledge in Calc.
Cracks lots of puns and is overall one of the better professors for first year math, as he is actually understandable and explains things if you ask him to. He does skim over a lot of definitions as I'm guessing he assumes everyone has already taken precalculus prior to the course and has knowledge beforehand. HW wise, he just follows the math fac.
Paul is a decent professor. Explained all the content pretty well. Was very easy to access outside of class and help explain concepts further. Made the lectures pretty fun with his jokes and examples. He was very kind to accept a group project of mine that was handed in late when it should've been marked a 0.
As much as some of his jokes did not land, we all appreciated the effort. Good prof, go to class and actually listen if you want to do well. Sometimes, lectures can be slightly hard to follow since Paul tends to skip the very basics, but it comes together in doing practice questions. Overall great! Even answered last-minute emails before exams!
Don't enroll in Paul's class. What I would recommend is being enrolled in Simchi's class and instead of going to class, just learn the content yourself and go to Simchi's office hours if you have any questions. Never ask Paul questions because he will give you the most useless response and will basically just tell you to go look in the notes.
This professor was good at lecturing but the tests seemed much harder than any of the examples we received. He did give great feedback and assistance when you talked to him which was much appreciated. Always tried to make a light class with clear expectations.
Stats is just a difficult course in general but not impossible. However, with Paul as the professor, somehow stats is worse. Don't bother emailing him with concerns because he just tells you to look in the notes. If you are hoping to slide into a B+ from a B he will not let you, even if you are 0.53% away from the B+ cut off.
As far as teaching Paul is very poor. Good structure to the course but other than that there's very little he offers. The course weighting is very off as well. Exams are worth 80% of the course, a midterm, lab final, and final. Regardless, he still has five labs and 11 homework assignments over the course of the term.
Try to avoid taking stat151 with him. This course is one of the most difficult intro courses already, and Paul does not help. The only way you can succeed in this course is by watching R. Fok's videos as you learn and attend your own prof's classes as extra practice.
STAT235 is a tough course that Paul Cartledge tries his best to make interesting. He can also be unclear when asked questions.
Stat 151 is a hard course, and a lot of people blame him for that when it's the same for every prof. Paul is caring and provides lots of outside help and feedback, you just need to ask. His notes are direct and he gives lots of examples. Do the practice lots and it gets easy. Examples get complication near the end, so don't skip class.
This professor doesn't help at all even if you have a doctor report that you are sick and can't attend the lectures he won't send you the annotate notes specifically the diagrams he won't post it on eclass. very tough grader.
The distracting humour in Professor Cartledge's lectures make it harder for pupils to understand what he is saying. After class, it's challenging to ask him for assistance. He might be rather mean and haughty. I'd prefer not to pay him for his instruction.
Don't ask him any questions his answer will always be look into the notes doesn't help much. The tests are way different than what you learn in class a very difficult professor to deal with being honest. if you ask him about anything he won't give you the answer he will just go all around the question without a clear answer to the question.
I didn't attend most of the lectures I passed with a C but honestly this is all thanks to my hardwork I had a surgery during this term I couldn't walk for a month at all I asked him to just send the diagrams discussed in class and he refused saying that it's not his fault that I chose to do the surgery lol Wouldn't recommend taking his class at all
hes unfunny
I tried to give him a fair chance, however his teaching was just too poor. I had to essentially teach myself via Dr. Fok's online lectures because even though I attended class, I was so lost. I eventually decided to attended Rosanna's lectures fully and it was a night and day difference! Turns out I just needed a different professors teaching!
Paul makes me cry
He was going way too fast on materials so I couldn't understand and exams were way too hard. Honestly just don't take stat 151 if not mandatory
PauL CartLedge has made my hairline recede an incomprehensible amount since i stepped into his lecture just a few months ago. He manages to haunt me every day. Avoid at all costs
Poorly crafted jokes. If more time was spent teaching my opinion may be different. One of my classmates had went to his office hours and expressed how Paul was very disrespectful towards him with no particular motive. Avoid at all costs
He always says the worse dad jokes and puns-- in the best possible way. He makes the material easy to understand. I would take this professor again if I could.
Perhaps the content is not the easiest but he definitely tries to make it enjoyable. He is available via e-mail or in person. Super nice man and may go a bit fast. But to be honest, it's better than a "slow reading from slides" prof. Stats courses have lots of homework but that's stats.
Really funny and nice, but I stopped understanding what he was saying about 5 minutes into the first lesson. I never went to lectures, but I managed to do well because of his practice questions and Fok's video lessons. Tests are MC, and are similar to the homework (expect ~2hrs hw per week). Labs are easy but the way they're structured sucks.
Paul was ok, but I would not take his class again. His notes were confusing for me if it wasn't for Rosana's videos and notes I would not have passed this class. He was accessible during his office times but if you were going to ask him an assignment question he would just tell you to look back to his notes.
He isn't the most interesting professor to learn from, I'd say. He mixed a lot of puns and jokes into his speech though, almost all of which are obscure references to stuff no one watches. His notes are "okay" at best, but I guess they get the job done. I'd still take him again though, he wasn't bad by any means.
Avoid at all costs. Notes were understandable but he does not care about you as a student and will actively talk badly about classes in previous semesters. I was scared to ask him for help because I felt like I would be turned into a laughing stock or mocked after the class ended.
Paul is very nice and has a thing for movies (which I appreciate) but he talks really fast and sometimes glosses over topics without providing examples. I found that he missed some of the topics that were included in the online assignments. I stopped going to class after the midterm and started watching Fok's videos at home to pass the class
Does not care about students succeeding in his class
Paul is the worst prof ever, do not take this class! His lectures were so bad I left more confused than when I came in. The only reason I passed this class is because of Foks videos.
He is not a great lecturer. Most of the lectures left me confused and bored out of my mind. He goes over new content like you were supposed to know already, numbers just appear magically. I stopped going about a month in and went to Fok's lecture and watched her videos, which was the only thing that saved my grade!
Notes were very confusing. I did most of my learning by myself or with Rosana's videos. Biggest issue I had was how he would overcomplicate things SO much. I would feel stupid in class then go relearn at home and realize the concept is simple. This isn't on the prof, but labs are horrible and modules take so much time but are worth almost nothing.
Confusing notes
He is a funny guy but beware as a prof. Stat 151 is already a really hard course and he doesn't help.
He mainly teaches by demonstrating how to do problems in-class, which is nice because they are very similar to the exam questions. I'd recommend a using a textbook or other resource for some of the more conceptual units though. If you love movies and/or puns, his random tangents are interesting.
I LOVED his class. His lectures were clear. If I got confused while learning in class, I could normally understand by re-reading the annotations from class. He loves to relate things to pop culture and makes many movie references and jokes, even if you dont get them. Hes personable and always willing to answer questions and get you thinking.
He goes over the content way too fast. Sucks cause he seems like a great guy since he's funny; however, as a professor he could do better.
Paul made a tough course worse. His notes were okay and lectures were okay, but he almost always uses numbers from 3 lecture old examples, never restating how he got them, just using them. Makes notes wildly hard to study, always flipping pages. He also makes you feel like he wants you to fail, I've never had a prof so spitefully unaccomodating.
This Prof makes an already hard class exponentially harder. In class notes are incomprehensible, using random data sets and not explaining how he acquired them. Doing the example questions without explaining his process. He teaches as if you come into his entry level class with an already pre existing knowledge of the subject. 0/10 do not recommend
Does he talk a lot? yes. Does he make some decent jokes? yes. He teaches in equations and examples mostly and if that doesn't work for you then i would avoid. BUT the sass this man contained after the USA elections, kept me entertained all class. He a stats baddie and MAN does he know it. Iconic.
I enjoy stats but he makes it so unbearable that it became the only class I chose to learn independently. His lectures are confusing and don't explain much of anything, he's unaccommodating, uses the same set of data for almost every example in his notes so you have to go back pages to see where he got numbers from, and his jokes are unfunny.
narcissist boooo
Really nice guy. His classes are pretty easy to follow and he's always available if you need help. I use roannas videos as additional learning in case something is unclear, but overall if you pay attention and do the assignments, not a bad course.
Paul is an excellent professor for STAT 151 very caring and funny guy. His office hours can be humbling, but him and his tas truly try their best to help you to understand the material. I would recommend this class to anyone who requires a math credit and is willing to work to understand material.
dark souls difficulty stats take him for a challenge
Always told a few jokes at the beginning of class. very nice and always helpful. he did use data sets where it was hard to see where he got the numbers from. He can go through questions really fast so make sure you review them so you know you understand them. But if you are pretty good at math and do a lot of practice questions you will do fine.
Compared to the other STAT profs I've had, he was by far the best. He makes a lot of jokes during class which keeps it interesting but sometimes he makes too many jokes which takes away from class time. He also uses the same data set for multiple examples so you have to keep referring to one question in the lecture to keep up with the notes.
This guy's jokes are catered towards 90's pop culture and he spams them every lecture. If the jokes don't drive you crazy, then the lectures aren't too bad. Do your best to keep up with the content if you miss a lecture since the notes will not be a supplement for missed material.
Paul is a cool guy who tries to make a hard course fun. Often I found that his examples are confusing and he doesn't always use the easiest way of going about things. He focusses on making sure you understand the concept opposed to identifying the style of question and going off that. Overall theres lots of resources to help, and he could be worse.
He is the absolute worst professor I have ever had. Rushes through the lectures and pretty much wants you to fail. He had a negative attitude and I did not learn anything in his class.
Bad at explaining concepts and wastes so much time making boring and niche puns or jokes. The only time I was able to learn anything from lecture is when he shut up and wrote something down because he wasn't going on about something completely unrelated.
Cartledge was a funny professor, I liked his movie references and admiration for studio ghibli. However, I feel that the course was lecture heavy and hard to listen along. As someone with ADHD, it was extremely difficult to understand the content. On the other hand, the labs had pretty justifiable deadlines.
Avoid at all costs. This man was the Joker to my Batman (That one is for you Paul). Not only was he constantly making movie references, he is all in all a horrible professor. He overcomplicates everything. The probability of succeeding in his class is close to 0. Take Rosanna.
He explains nothing in a way that any human being can even understand and expects you to know stats terms that you have never heard before. The jokes he makes all the time are bad but take time away from the already terrible lecture at least.
Good class if u enjoy not understanding a single thing for an entire lecture and then just when you begin to understand, Paul will start and unskippable cut scene where he tells a joke that will not be moved on from until someone laughs or understands his reference. Think of North Korea when kimmy makes a joke and the citizens are forced to laugh.
He would teach our lectures and make horrible references and jokes and delay the class until someone responded. He would also force us to do his surveys so he could provide examples for us. He is like a dictator of his class, unfair homework during reading week. But he cant keep his TA's and himself accountable for marking timely.
He essentially forces you to go to class by posting notes but inserting "This was talked about in class", preventing students who missed class to due illness or other reasons to be screwed. He also makes horrendous jokes in class which no students find funny, then he sits there until someone reacts to his joke. Horrible
Talks so fast makes so many jokes that make lectures hard to follow. Monotone. Labs were very difficult. Midterm was easy but final was not. Lots of hw questions. I even went to help sessions every week and failed.
Took last semester and he blamed students for poor grades when the average was low. Couldn't self-reflect that maybe students did poorly due to his poor teaching skills? As they say a students grades are the reflection of the teacher.
He has a terrible sense of humour that makes me want to leave. He tries to make a pun with everything that doesn't even make sense. He makes me jealous of the ceiling fans hanging. On the professor side of things, his lectures are super heavy and if you miss even 1, you will be lost.
He is absolutely horrible do not take his course he can't teach. Made everything so overly complicated and his teaching style is the worst I've ever seen. Stats is not a hard course but attending his class made everything 500x harder.
Not very professional. Talked about films he likes in every class. Would literately say "not body say F it and leave the class yet?" in class. said he would like us to review midterm but never posted answers for written questions. Poor instructions and requirement for labs. Deducted marks for things you don't have because the question never asked.
The only thing we learned in STAT 235 was that Terminator 2 was the best movie of the Terminators. DO NOT RECOMMEND
He's knowledgeable but often struggled to simplify concepts, so I relied on the textbook and self-study. The material isn't hard at all, and the provided practice questions were very helpful. With online resources available, it's easy if you put in the effort. I found him decent overall—chill and occasionally helpful in lectures.
The examples were funny or more interesting, but I had to use Rosana Fok's notes to learn the material on my own. He seems like a nice guy and all, but his notes are harder to reference (maybe some colour could help) and less visually pleasing, while his lectures go over my head. He did answer questions though if you were curious.
Boring to listen to. Terrible lectures. The best part was how shocked he was when everyone did terrible on the exam.
Going to a Paul Cartledge lecture is like trying to mow a field with toe nail clippers. Going to a Paul Cartledge lecture is like trying to drain the ocean with a teaspoon. Going to a Paul Cartledge lecture is like trying to put out a Forest Fire with a juice box. Going to a Paul Cartledge lecture is like trying to catch smoke with you bare hands.
Very nice, fairly funny prof. Lectures are really hard to follow because of how much context switching there is, and the posted notes aren't much help either. But if you email or go to office hours he takes his time to explain concepts and examples. He also provides justification as to why marking takes so long and why solutions can't be posted.
I feel sorry to everyone in an intro stats class with paul. Terrible lectures, he can't explain topics clearly. He likes to talk a little too much, though some of his jokes are funny, I'll give him that. Assignments are good and carry over well to exams. The labs are incredibly painful and graded very tough
I was told growing up if you have nothing nice to say don't say it.
The most stressful lectures of first year and I'm in freaking yoram apelblat's labs (if you know you know) bro made me start crying
Paul was sometimes funny and I enjoyed his pre-class puns. However, his lectures were often confusing and fast-paced and he didn't teach in a way that made me really understand; only superficially. Only graded by one midterm, one final, and a little bit of homework. Exams were really worth a lot so you better study and pray you do well on them.
Paul is a chill prof with ok puns and teaches stats decently. Get 100% on unlimited homework, attend labs, and ask the TA—easiest marks, plus the lab exam. Exams closely match homework. The course material is boring and exam-heavy, but if you fail it's mostly on you—he wants you to pass; skipping lectures or using CHAT raises failure odds. Notably.
I don't understand it now :(
His jokes made me wanna rip my hair out. Didnt post annotated notes for Math 154. Also had him for Stats 161 in the same semester and I almost ended it all for myself. Oh, and his jokes were not funny. Dare i mention the jokes.
Paul has a lot of corny jokes and movie knowledge. You might not learn everything in the course through his lectures but he was good resources for you to learn on your own. all in all i would have him again but just try and show effort in his class cuz it might not just be a breeze.
He teaches the material but oh wow, his puns are absolutely brutal. They are not just little things here and there ... pop culture references every two minutes (at the least) from the 90's that no one reacts to. There comes a point where you genuinely want to learn stats (somehow) because of the performance he is putting on for himself. brutal.
Take whatever rating he has and subtract two. People might say randomly choose between the three profs for stat 235, choose Simchi. Trust. All profs will get the knowledge in your brain but Paul does it with 1000 degree barbed wire.
too much reddit humour to the point where it is genuinely insufferable to be in his class. Go to Simchi.
i swear his pacing and voice pmo he nice tho
