He sets high standards for his students, and puts in the extra effort to help his students achieve those standards.
Best math teacher I've ever had. Tough, but lively and humorous delivery of material makes his classes easy to pay attention to, and learn from.
Mr. Casillas is a total rock star. I learned more in 2 quarters (10 yrs apart, even. 090&095) with him than in 4 yrs of Hi-school. He is genuinely enthusiastic about his subject, and conveys that enthusiasm as well as the knowlege with great competence.
Paul is a wonderful instructor, his Math 120/121 sequence is highly enjoyable, and you can tell he really digs what he does. He's tough, but fair, and his instruction has been one of the most positive experiences I've had at Clark.
Paul is the most intolerable math teacher they have at Clark. He doesn't tolerate any student who needs help in math. You better know your math before you take his class. If not, he won't hestitate in intimidating you in class.
This teacher is arrogant and extremely unhelpful. I am an A math student and this teachers methods were impossible. I dropped him after his second test because I was sick of being made to feel stupid by him when asking for clarity.
Paul's class is generall easy and he spends more time than any teacher i have known to fully explain problems and concepts when students do not fully understand. You will learn in this class and it shouldnt be painful.
He needs to understand that we are NOT all math majors........NOT NICE
Paul Casillas is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He goes out of his way to help you understand difficult concepts, which is more than I can say for some of the teachers I've had in teh past.
NOT NICE........ENOUGH SAID
great teacher
i agree with the second persons comments. Even thou Paul's class is tough I found him to be extremely fair, approachable and entertaining (loved the cloud guy/smiley guy thing) What i really appreciated was the fact that he was patient with me and didn't dismiss any questions that i might have had a
Paul was one of the hardest teachers at Clark that I have ever taken. I did well on homework but bombed on tests. When questioned he would tell me that I didn't know how to study. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM!!!!
Good teacher and helps you understand concepts. BUT his grading is harder than most teachers. Every hw prob. is graded. On tests every aspect of the problem must be correct to get full credit. If you make a tiny mistake then you get almost no credit. 95 is a HARD class, so take someone else!
Excellent teacher. He is very enthusiastic about math, which helps students to stay interested. If you need help on something, he is more than willing to do so.He sets students up for success by giving you many options to learn (like help session). If you are willing to work, you'll get a good grade.
Paul is an excellent teacher. It's true that he tends to be more difficult than other teachers, but he gives you all of the tools that you need in order to be meet his high standards. In my experience, he was very supportive and encouraging. He taught me a lot about my learning style, which has contributed greatly to my success in college.
Mr. Casillas is a great teacher. Very enthusiastic math teacher! I highly recommend him. You'll learn a lot.
I love this teacher. I have always hated math, but he helped me to finally understand it and excel at it. He's hilarious and nerdy and I found him quite enjoyable. I RECOMMEND HIM HIGHLY!
best....teacher.... ever
I hate Math and I still suck at it, but Paul taught it in a way that I actually walked away some pretty cool Math knowledge. He is very helpful in breaking it down to your level, no matter what that is. I wish he taught all the Math classes I have been forced to take.
he was entertaining
Paul's style is fast paced and highly entertaining. DO NOT take this instructor if you do not want to make an effort for your own learning. DO take this instructor if you want to learn math and retain the information, even if it means working hard for your education. Also - Paul is a pretty cool guy =)
He is tough but stayed on task. Was very intimidating!
He is, hands down, the best math teacher I have ever had. Excellent!
Paul is entertaining and informative! He's funny at times and expects great things out of us. You can tell that he wants his students to succeed. I am taking Math 089 and he makes it seem a lot more intimidating than it is but, he explains things very well and takes time to make sure we all understand. Best math teacher I've ever had.
There is a reason Paul is Chairman of the math department. He is an excellent teacher and does want his students to succeed. He expects a lot and does assign and collects homework every day but he is great!
Paul is the best teacher i have ever had he explains and makes everything so clear. if you have problems in math take him he walks you through step by step and explains everything. i failed math 090 and when back and took 089 it was like night and day. best math teacher ever. plus hes funny.
if you struggle in math take him. he explains everything really well. plus you get a penguin pack so you have all the notes.he drops your 5 lowest homeworks, and if you do good on the final he drops your lowest test score. one of the best math teachers at clark take him if you want to understand what you are doing and want to pass the class!!!!
Awesome teacher i recommend him to anyone that struggles with math. he has extra help sessions for people who are struggling. he really does not want you to fail
Paul Casillas was very helpful in taking up my concern with a certain unnamed professor. I know not what he's like as a teacher but as head chairmen of the math department, he is what gives me hope. I'm never taking a math class at Clark College again but Paul Casillas is a respectful professional in a sub-par world of Bauer Hall.
Top notch teacher. Light attitude, clear steps and keeps his eye on the ones falling through the cracks. My first teacher at Clark and he's already set a pretty high standard for me. Whether you love math or hate it, I recommend Casillas.
He does great at everything! He's coocoo at times but to be honest that keeps me focused in the classroom. The class is not too hard but not too easy. Learned a lot and it's good to have an instructor passionate about their subject. He's funny and caring. Highly recommend.
Great teacher! He is very clear in his teaching. His test are HARD. Be prepared. He gives you all the information you need, but you really need to know your stuff if you want a good grade.
Paul is the best math teacher I've ever had in my life!!! I hope to take him for other math classes in the future. Show up to class EVERY DAY because he teaches something new and you really need to be there to make sure you learn it. He drops 7 homework grades, and hands out sheets to take notes on the section. Take his class!!!!
The best math teacher I've had, hands down.
Great teacher with a good personality and sense of humor. Do the assignments and you'll be good.
Paul is not an easy teacher, but he goes out of his way to explain things in plain language, and that is a lot of help in understanding the course work.
Awesome teacher, very helpful, works from the book and from daily packet. Straight to the point kind of teacher, don't want any BS from you. Wants you in class, if you don't show considers it not his problem- fine by me.
Paul is a good teacher, except he is very difficult, especially with the tests. no notes allowed on the tests. He is pretty funny though.
Paul is a VERY HARD teacher and grades hard but he is so helpful and wants you to succeed. He always had time to give me extra help but you really needed to know your stuff on the tests.
Amazing instructor!
Paul is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He is very legitimate, mature, and consistent with his teaching methods. Many students dropped out near the last 1/4 of the term; do not be lazy in this class or it will catch up with you.
While he makes his class difficult with tons of homework assignments and grades mercilessly (no overdue homework under any circumstances), he more than makes up for it with his experience. He's been an instructor for years and it shows: among the best math teachers you could pick. Don't ever fall behind in this class, though.
Paul is an amazing teacher. He is a hard grader because every bit of notation has to be perfect and the class is pretty hard but he teaches it in a very simple way. Don't take if you skip class a lot, he's great with putting resources and homework on Canvas but teaches a ton every day. He is a very fun person to listen to. Definitely recommend!
I have never failed a class before, not in college nor in high school. I failed this class. His grading style is lazy and his reaction to your questions are sometimes very sarcastic. He takes off a half a point for every mistake and every assignment whether it be five problems or fifty is worth ten points. Save yourself. Don't take his class.
He speaks to the students very disrespectful, from day one. We are not all straight from high school and if any other adult spoke to me like this, it would get ugly. Homework given from book and online for just one day. He complains about college giving additional chapters but another instructor said this is not true. He's very rude. Never again!!!
Paul Casillas is a tough grader. Everything you need to know is posted daily in Canvas or in the syllabus. He is incredibly helpful, but you need to approach him. He is dry and sarcastic which suits me just fine. Look beyond the rough exterior and the abruptness. He is an incredible teacher who enjoys math and who helped me to appreciate it!
Tests are very very hard. Hardest math class I've taken. The homework is daily, but not too difficult, quizzes are almost daily. He loves math and is fun to listen to. He is happy to give help outside of class. Tests though are killers... If you are looking for an easy class, this is NOT it. You can't make up anything either.
If math is your best subject and you enjoy it than take his class, he's very smart and gives good lectures. If math isn't your strong point I suggest a different teacher. He grades extremely hard! You will always have homework and he seems to think everyone should already be good at math (its intimidating). Overall he's a nice guy, tough teacher.
i loved this but I can see why some people didn't. it look me awhile to get used to his style- i bombed the first test- but after that he made a lot of sense. There are only 3 tests so they're worth a lot of points each. There is homework every day. Hard to get a good grade but easy class. He's a really funny guy and he has a passion for math.
He is funny and an overall good teacher. But be prepared he does not mess around. Hard to pass his class, tons of homework, tough tests. I have never failed a class until I took his.
He's a tough grader and doesn't mess around but he is an awesome teacher and does a good job explaining tings.
tests are hard... ugh... Overall a good class but expect a lot of homework and time necessary to study day in and out. Many get one of my lowest grades by far.
worst math teacher you will ever take. teaches one thing, gives homework about something he didn't teach and gives tests about half of the things he teaches and half of the things you have to learn by yourself. have to be self motivated and have a lot of time to study and do homework. I suggest not to take this teacher at all. Had to drop the class
Take this class only if you are fresh out of high school and have math down. I have been out of school for a few years and decided to go back. I was a little rusty on a couple things so I tried getting help from him and he helped with two problems and the fact that I asked him about a third he told me I should think about dropping the class.
His exams are infinitely more complicated than the course work and the text book.
I took this class last quarter. For the first two weeks I thought I was not going to pass. If you need help I strongly suggest going into his office and getting help. Getting help caused me to pass the class. He is very passionate about math and is a great teacher.
Paul is an exceptional teacher, but the course itself can be challenging. He made it clear he was there to help us, thoroughly answered questions in, and after, class, and did his best to prepare us for the exams. Study for the tests! The text is much easier than the exams so be sure you really know the concepts and don't be caught off guard!
Paul is a super funny, and overall nice guy. He is really helpful, but this class was the hardest one so far at Clark and I get all A's. The tests are challenging and much harder than the homework so study, study, study.
If you have anything come up, forget it your going to fail. No late work accepted, not even if you have emergency surgery. Even if you get the answers right on tests he will mark them wrong if your work is not "correct". Unless you know most of the material I suggest hiring a tutor your going to need it. Hopefully you know how to follow a fast pace
One of the best math instructors I have ever had. Really helpful and extremely smart. Would take again definitely.
Paul is the best math teacher I have had so far! He will explain everything to you and if you still don't understand he has another way to explain it. He makes the material very relatable and takes lots of time to explain why something works and doesn't just expect you to believe it without an explanation.
Great professor. He lays it all out for you. There is absolutely no question on what's expected. He is very available and easy to approach. If you put the effort in to go see him, he will do everything to help you. He's funny, has lots of great little stories. He is also no nonsense when need be. Always make sure you're phone is off!
This teacher is seriously amazing! Don't sign up if you think "Math for Elementary School Teachers" is an easy A. If you're willing to work hard you will learn a lot, his lectures are engaging and interesting, he explains things very well. I've taken up to three of his classes now and I will miss them.
This professor is precise, funny, and extremely helpful. He cares very deeply that the future Elementary Teachers he trains, know math well. If you are looking for an easy class, or think because it "elementary math" that it will be easy, you will not make it. Know your algebra, study hard, you will succeed. I learned lots and will miss his class!
Paul assigns way too much homework. He can also be hard to approach. Overall, he is a good teacher.
Paul was an overall decent professor but the amount of work he required was very overwhelming. He never accepts any late work for any reason nor does he excuse any absences. Be prepared for a excessive amount of work and hard exams.
Paul is certainly not my favorite math instructor. He makes 'daily homework' due dates flexible, but it actually makes it very difficult to keep track of assignments (and forget about late work). Lesson plans are seriously confusing and this class could be so much more easy with a clearer curriculum. But I guess it could be worse.
Paul is the best professor I have ever had over the last three years at Clark. He is extremely thorough in his lectures, he's hilarious, and he gives extra points for turning things in a day early. If you show up and pay attention, and do the work, you will guaranteed get an A. I am excited to take more of his classes over the next few quarters!
Almost your entire grade is based off of four exams and your final, with a small portion of your grade going to homework. Tests are graded very harshly with points taken off for grammar mistakes. Exams are much too long and twice he had to give everyone in the class extra credit points because no one was able to finish an entire page of the exam.
he is a great teacher, his canvas is very organized, he is accessible outside of class, although he gives a HUGE amount of homework, which counts for little to no points, and your grade all depends on the exams that you take. It was a very stressful class.
Extremely test heavy. Lots of homework that doesnt count toward much of your grade. You will get marked down for any grammar mistakes. Casillas is a stickler for notation in the work you do, even your scratch paper type stuff off to the side. Youll be marked down even if you give the right answer, ridiculous. I do NOT recommend.
Prof. Casilla's class is lecture heavy, and make sure that you're ready to do a lot of homework. However, his homework is almost all applicable. One of my greatest worries through this class was my grammar and syntax, as he'll dock points for using incorrect words (one hundredths vs one hundreds) and punctuation. Very invested/passionate about math
Mr. Casillas is a great professor, very helpful with questions and very clear with his instructions 10/10
If you're looking for an easy A, then I suggest taking a different professor. There's a lot of homework that doesn't count much towards your grade; it's the tests that are heavy weighted. Casillas is a great professor though. He's passionate about math, encouraging, knowledgeable and he always keeps the class interesting and engages his students.
There's a method to his madness. I learned so much from Paul over the three courses I took with him (MTH 122,123,124). It is not easy to get an amazing grade in here but I learned so much more in this class than I ever did in any other class. PAY ATTENTION TO HIS RULES/GRADING CRITERIA!
At first I thought Paul would be a really boring teacher, but if you pay attention in his lectures he makes some really fun comments that make the class WAY more entertaining. I really enjoyed this class as well as the work we did. As long as you studied and stayed on top of the work you were fine.
I would not recommend any math professor at Clark more than Casillas. He's fair and firm. He's also organized, encouraging, and teaches in a way that students understand. I had a great time learning from him. He'll care for you as much as you care about your grade. I'd run through a wall for this guy.
Amazing teacher!! He gave me an extra point on the final so I would have an A. He responds to emails within minutes and is very helpful on assignments. He even makes his own videos that you can watch (3-7 minutes) that help you understand the math problems you are doing. Best professor Ive ever had :)
There is nothing that really stands out about this teacher.
Paul is a fantastic professor! He's extremely responsive to emails and answers any question you may have (even the dumb ones). He has an automatic 24hr extension built into every assignment because he realizes that crap happens. He's a great teacher and a great person. I totally recommend and would take his other classes!
Casillas was an amazing teacher. He truly cares for the learning of his students, he provides lecture videos that he creates himself on the math topics that help a lot! The math projects and assignments are very simple and doable. He is very accessible through email if struggling. I highly recommend!
Love this man. Funniest guy you'll meet. Grade based on a point system, once you reach 300 points, you get an A. I reached 300 by week 8 and didn't have to do anything else besides the final project. Stuck on a question? He will set up a zoom with you and help you. He can check your work before you turn in your assignment. Easy A
Great teacher, easy class, would recommend. Just make sure you do your assignments as they are due and remember that there is a 24-hour grace period (so use that). As long as you do that and watch the videos that he provides to learn the stuff you should be fine. What I love about him is that he relates it to real world things and makes you think.
I loved this class. Paul is a great teacher, but just beware, he is very eccentric and loud, although his tone of voice is never angry. He gives a lot of homework, but its fairly easy. Remember to look carefully at the syllabus; he lets you know when assignments have a 24-hour extension period because if they don't, he wont accept any late work.
Paul was an amazing instructor. He provided a plethora of resources to make sure students understand the concepts. He also offered several easy extra credit in case of poor homework grade. He also promptly replies to emails about course questions.
Paul is an amazing professor. He answered emails within minutes and set up a zoom meeting to go over concepts I did not understand. Based on a points system, once I got to 300 points I did not need to do anymore work which left me with 2 weeks at the end of the semester free. I would never not recommend Paul Casillas. I am taking another math w/him
Professor Casillas is a great math instructor. His point system is interesting but it's nice to have a break from "conventional" grading. This helped the quarter go by quickly. Try to get to 300 points as soon as possible, it is easy! I do not recommend slacking like I did. He is very educated and caring towards this career path. Highly recommend.
He is meticulous with grading, 1/2 point off for an uncapitalized sentence. I don't recommend him. He has NO late work policy, if you didn't get in on the day it was due, too bad. He assigns lots of homework and it's very challenging.
(I took calc I). Casillas is maybe the best professor in the math department. At first he looked like a guy who would monologue the entire class period. However, his lectures are actually pretty interesting and he has a great sense of humor. His classes are difficult, but he is willing to help you learn. I would take 50 calc exams for this man.
Paul was great! There are videos for each unit that you should watch before starting the assignment and on the online homework assignments. He grades on a points scale rather than percentage. In my class once you get to 305 points you have an automatic A. I got stuck on a question and he set up a zoom to help. Easy going class and great professor!
Mr. Casillas manages to make every lecture interesting and makes every trig topic understandable. He is more than willing to help you with a topic, and as long as you show work, you can still get partial credit on missed questions. He also has his own "packet" thing he created to help you take notes. If you need to take a math class, take Paul.
This professor's class was ok to take. The math itself is not hard at all, probably the easiest 100-level math you could take. However, he is a HARSH grader. Forget a single label in the middle of your work? Marked down a whole point for that question. Be super careful with your work if you take his class. Attendance is mandatory to pass.
Paul is an amazing professor. He clearly explains concepts in an easily understandable way, and the due dates are not back-to-back. He is also very understanding. I appreciate his passion for mathematics. The concepts he taught have contributed to shaping my academic journey. I recommend his 095 class if you are in need of taking one.
The content of the class itself was not bad; however, the professor was not great. He was very picky about labels and would mark you down if you forgot to label answers with things such as squared or inches. He allowed you to fix homework to get full credit, but it barely helped your grade. Your grade is entirely based on tests.
I took Mr. Casillas for Calc I and have never taken a class where the class clown was the instructor, but here we are! One of my favorite quotes was "You can teach your cat to walk backwards, but why would you?" While this instructor cares very much about notation and is a rather touch grader, his goofiness made up for it and made the class fun.
Goated professor. He knows math well and explains it well.
I took the accelerated math 90 course, so it was quite the challenge. However, Paul is a fantastic teacher who often goes backwards to explain why things work and what things mean while teaching. I learned more in this class than I did in all my high school classes combined. I have a much better understanding of math now.
Paul was great! He was funny and caring, you could tell he loves what he does. He made the material clear and made sure everyone was able to understand. You can't turn in work late so make sure you have it done before class. Amazing teacher I would definitely recommend his class and I would take it again!
