Paul is knowledgeable, funny, and very attractive! His humor keeps the class exciting and enjoyable. I miss seeing him every tuesday at 8 AM, he's been my favorite prof this year.

He is a GREAT prof. Academic writing was a mandatory first year class, but it was one of my favorites. He is funny, and makes it so interesting. His teaching method is great too.

Very nice guy. His classes are a lot of work yet I still signed up for his cultures in crisis class. He's just so funny and you learn so much, it's worth it to take his class. If you take it though try and attend as you get better marks for that.

Paul is a tough but fair teacher. He expects a lot from you and wants high quality work but he's very clear on how to earn good grades. His lectures are hilarious and engaging. He's very up front and honest about what he will and won't tolerate in terms of in class behaviour. Just attend class, take notes, and listen to his feedback.

Very fun and helpful prof, he's really honest and you can tell he really does want to help you and help imporve your writing sills. His marking is kinda tough but its reasonable because he's very clear as to what he expects. Loved this course, i can see why some of you may have thought i was challenging. I would say that for actual firsts year students it is rather challenging because he tries to teach a completely different way at looking and analyzing material. He was my best profs and on top of that he's very good looking!:D HI PAUL!

If you're looking for an easy mark go elsewhere. If you actually want to learn something worthwhile, go to any class with Paul. Opened my eyes to so many issues, he's amazing. You'll feel like you're at a Just for Laughs show, lectures flew by. If you go to class, work hard and show an interest he won't peanalize you and you may even get an A.

Excellent prof, very funny and interesting. Really enjoyed his lectures and very understanding. Thelectures flew by he has a great passion for what he does but lightens it with a great sense of humour. Hard marker, im scared hes actually picking out my grammer mistakes in this comment, but very worth taking his class if you wanna learn something.

He is a great prof!!! Attendance is mandatory but u wont regret going to classes, in fact u wont want to miss his classes. He is hilarious and his accent is just so cool! Talks fast but very clear. Probably my favourite professor. A fairly hard marker but worth it, I would not trade his class for an easy one. His 3 hour lectures fly by because he is hilarious! So many laughs, I hope to take other classes Paul teaches!

Paul was the best professor I had my first year at Ryerson. He is very decisive, and clear. He always extends his office hours beyond needed to provide extra help. Visiting Paul during his office hours helped me tremendously during the semester. His class was entertaining, and far from dry. If you can get into Paul's class for SSH205 do it!

The high comments for Chafe aren't just a fluke, he is one of the best teachers I have ever had and I look forward to hopefully having him again. Great sense of humor, cares about his students, carefully plans his classes and is incredibly intelligent. You'll feel like your tuition is being put to good use. Just make sure you go to class!

He was probably the funniest teacher I've had at Ryerson and helped open us up to University life. He really understood what he taught and he always entertained us with his humour and stories. He is pretty strict with how he want things done with assignments but overall he's a pretty awesome prof!

So far, the best prof I've had! He's really strict but it is for our best. Funny, interesting and engaging. Offers so much help and encouragement, not only in academics but in life itself. Fantastic professor who know what he teaching ... at beginning he seems difficult, but do the reading and attend class and you get what he's teaching. A lot of reading, a lot of reading in the class. Participation was part of the mark as well as attendance. It helps at the end, because of attendance and participation I got an A, he helps you out .

I heard that Paul was a really hard marker going in to the class, and he is. But he's fair, and I think it definitely made me a better writer. His lectures are mandatory, but he's so funny you actually want to come to class. Makes a 3 hour class at the end of the week fly by. He's strict, but it's a good thing. Take his SSH205 if you can!

When I first read the course description I dreaded attending this 3 hour lecture... however, it ended up being my favourite 3 hours of the week! He is really funny and direct with what he's looking for. None of that unclear stuff. On the first assignment I got a 62 but by my final paper I was getting 85+! Would reccomend him to everyone!!

Sweetheart! Honestly, even though I didn't enjoy this class because writing is not my strong suit I enjoyed going into class every morning and he was really clear during the entire lecture. He made it really enjoyable and he's always testing you and your skills! He wants you to do well!

Great professor, lectures are very engaging. Hardest marker I have ever had, but gives lots of help with essay preparation, always able to meet with students to explain or help them.

Hardest marker ever. I felt like everything I did was never good enough or raised up to his high standards. He does offer great help to those who need it and make sure you use his office hours because he will show you are taking initiative! Make sure you show up to class as well because he takes attendance and it counts towards your final mark!

It's a shame that I only get 350 characters to put here, because there's so much to say about Paul Chafe. The man is easily the funniest teacher I've ever had, every lecture is basically a knowledgeable stand-up special. He is helpful during office hours, but his course is challenging so you need to work. By far one of my favourite teachers ever!

I hated going to this class because it was long and he pre-taped his lectures so you had to watch them before class. I didn't like the course at all but he was hilarious and he keeps you interested because everything he says is funny.

Mr. Chafe is an absolute sweetheart His lectures maintain a solid balance of substance, relevance and comedy. By going to his class this prof will reward you with great insight and a surprisingly hilarious lecture. He gave me a **** grade but I must applaud his excellent comedic timing and his helpfulness. Attendance is key.

I love this man. Anyone who's saying he's a hard marker is a baby -- you get exactly what you deserve. He really cares about his students' success and gives so many opportunities for easy marks (ex. 10% participation grade, 5% library assignment). Also, he's hilarious and pretty good looking... take his class, kids.

Paul Chafe was an awesome professor who turns a mandatory class into a class that I actually looked forward to attending. He clearly cares about what he is teaching and the success of his students. Attendance is important because he will remeber the last time you attended class. Overall it was a great class and I would take it again in a heartbeat.

He's a great professor. He is HILARIOUS! You'll enjoy him as a teacher due to his humour and his knowledge on the subject matter. You MUST read and follow his instructions. If you take an interest in the work he will go the extra mile for you. There is a bit of in-class group work, the rest is individual. I would definitely take this class again.

Chaffe knows the elements of thesis writing and identifying important aspects in key texts in and out and makes sure that we understood them in his class by explaining them in every way imaginable to us. Creative and thorough he even let me make up on some mistakes I made. Really helped me learn the stuff and improve in a space where I had room.

before taking his class I was terrified, but now I can easily say that he is one of the best professors at Ryerson! He is a hard marker , yet is willing to help you & If you are not satisfied use his office hours. I've started the course with C-, and ended with an A- . the lectures were amazing since he is hilarious & sweetheart haha.

Before taking this class, I admit I did search through rate my professors & was a little nervous! But honestly, he's a really good teacher. Very engaging which makes you more motivated to the work, & come to class. There is a specific type of essay writing that is used in this class, so if your willing to learn you'll be fine. If you don't like group work, don't take this class. Chafe can speak in front of a class though and is funny. The flipped lectures help but class is boring as a result and it's been the worst 3 hours of my life. NEVER AGAIN.

He's a great professor when it comes to baring the three hours sitting in a room plus i give him props for making a boring subject somewhat fun to listen to. HOWEVER, he watches you like a hawk if you're talking or on your phone. He's extremely intimidating & a VERY tough marker, (he will tell you he isn't but he really is) no such thing as 100%.

Lecture was small, and paired people into groups to work on small in-class work for almost each week. Attendance is a must, and an attitude would be best to be left outside (along with your phone!) Great prof! cares about his students, just pay attention and do the homework and you'll do awesome.

This class was challenging but that's why I enjoyed it. The reading material was my favorite aspect to this class. Other highlights: he's funny, in class group work allows for peer connection/learning, flip lectures are always there for reference, and his use of varying teaching techniques. These highlights came in handy as a mature student.

Great Professor. Makes you work for your grade but in the end, you will get back what you put in. My writing across other courses have improved thanks to Paul and his high standards. He has a sarcastic attitude, which i find funny, but don't take anything he says TOO seriously. Don't be disrespectful to him (basically be a decent human being), and he'll be your favourtie prof. Professor Chafe definetly made Monday 8am lectures worth waking up for! His lectures were always funny and engaging. As long as you attend and are consistent with the course material (which is pretty easy to follow) you will get an A.

Paul is one of my favorite profs ever! The only people who have problems with him are those that do not listen to his feedback or put the work in and expect their mark to be an A+. Paul's a sweetheart, he makes an unbearable course actually interesting. I have struggled with this course with every other professor at Ryerson that teaches it yet Paul can make the most vague course understandable. His lectures are fun and the group work is actually helpful in understanding the material. He grades fairly and gives real feedback.

The flipped lectures saved my mark so that I didn't have to focus so much on the textbook. Be prepared when you come to class because there are participation marks and group work. His lectures are hilarious and he genuinely wants to help you pass. Basically, sign the B contract and you can get any grade you want.

If you do your homework on the flipped lectures every week and keep up, you will get a decent mark. Great experience in this class, learned a lot. He was very friendly and helpful. Most importantly, he answers his emails and he is easy to make an appointment with. I hope to take another one of his classes in the future.

Best prof I have had so far hands down. He makes you understand the material in an entertaining way. He engages with his students. Gives good feedback although he is a tough grader and you'll have to put in the work. I learned a lot from him and I would definitely take him again.

Great Prof in terms of his style and substance that he brings to each class. Always in a comedic mood and ready to make the class laugh. Breaks down what would be otherwise dry topics in a way that makes them enjoyable for all involved and incorporates real life and relevant topics into his lessons. Really great guy, would recommend to anyone.

Paul is a hilarious man who put his own experiences into all of his lectures. I never left his room without a smile appearing on my face at one point or another! That said, SSH205 is certainly one that requires attendance and commitment to the course readings and assignments (unfortunately, not my strong suits), but Paul was very understanding! :-)

Paul is an amazing professor, hands down. In order to do well in his course, you MUST attend every class (attendance is 10% of your final grade) and hand every assignment in. If you do those two things, you're guaranteed a 75% in the course. He also implemented a lot of group work which helped me in making new friends!

Paul was a great professor. The workload can be heavy at times but he guarantees a B if you complete all homework, assignments, and come to class ready to learn. He uses a lot of group work which was surprisingly helpful. Best of all, he has a great sense of humor, time flies by. 100% would take him again.

Attendance is taken for 10% of the grade. I really liked him as a prof, he is a really hard marker, but for the final exam, he marks easy. In the class, you can obtain really easy marks. He makes his lectures interesting, engaging and different. I also used the textbook for the midterm, even though he posts it online, it gives clarification.

Although there are only 3 options to "best describe this professor", I would also add "respected", "get ready to read", "participation matters", "lots of homework", "accessible outside class", "clear grading criteria", "amazing lectures", and "caring." Hands down, the best teacher I have ever had. He absolutely changed my university career.

Chafe's a cool guy. He's accessible outside of class but be prepared with a solid framework of ideas in order for him to help you. Read the material assigned in advance until you get a good grasp on it. You'll get more out of the lectures and make the course work a lot easier.

One of the bed Profs I have ever had. He is very funny and wants to see you do well. His class is more group work based and then you review and watch the lecture before the class to know what the group work will be based on. 10% of your mark comes from attendance alone so it is a better choice to show up and get the full 10%

Chafe is by far the funniest prof and he genuinely wants to see students do well! If you show up to class and do all the homework then the lowest grade you can get is a B. The final exam seems tough but he marks very easy on that. Some of the material are difficult to understand but he will guide you and is very helpful during office hours.

The best prof I had during my first year. Responds to emails quickly and is always available during his office hours for you to receive great feedback and advice on assignments. Always came to class telling jokes and made SSH205 bearable. Keep up with the flipped lectures and stay on top of all the assignments and you will do well.

Honestly a sweetheart, if you explain something to him hes very reasonable and is likely to work with you. He is very funny so the dull material is definitely much more enjoyable to learn about.

Pretty funny guy keeps things entertaining, but he is more like the fun uncle at the dinner table. Wasn't a fan of his expectations as there was not much criteria to bring home which made things confusing when you tried writing essays at home. He grades pretty hard and makes things a little confusing with his feedback saying 'Whats at Stake" 24/7.

Although course content is extremely boring, Paul did his best to make the 3 hour lectures as engaging as possible. Would go on tangents on honestly they were very entertaining. Gave a lot of feedback, though it was slightly confusing feedback, somewhat hard to grasp at times. Tells you exactly what the exam will be and you can prep all you want (I legit wrote two essays and memorized them, then regurgitated it on the exam). Free textbook.

Loved his lecture style, you actually get to practice the things you'll need to know for the midterm and paper in class. Very entertaining also! Would take again in a heartbeat.

He was a good prof. Lectures were more about application rather then actually teaching us. Apparently people didn't do so well on the essays though so it can be tough. Whatever you do though GO TO THE ESSAY EXCHANGE! It will help you as it will force u to get started a week early and you get an extra 5% that will help u if you didn't do so well.

Paul was a good professor. His class is not easy and the material is difficult however Paul does a good job at explaining everything. You will get a good grade if you put the work in. He is also a good lecturer with a good sense of humor.

Paul Chafe is actually a pretty good professor if you actually try in the course. He can be scary sometimes and he's a tough grader, but he literally had like 3+ office hours every week. He's willing to sit with you and talk about your essays if YOU are willing to. He's actually a pretty funny guy and I would recommend him over the other profs

Probably my favourite prof for my first semester. The weekly Zoom meetings were very informative and his assignment details were very clear. It was obvious that he cared for his students and wanted everyone who took his class to succeed. Was available for feedback and gave good advice on how to approach academic essay writing!

I wanted to drop his class at first. He does come across as tough and rude, but his assignments are straightforward, he tells you his expectations and how to get it done. We had a good amount of time to hand in work. Class isn't mandatory, but he does look for participation marks. He's actually really nice and I hope I get him as a prof again!

I had him last year and realized I forgot to give him a rating. He is a solid professor. Truly cares about his students and will go out of his way to make sure you understand the material. One thing I know for sure is that I will always have "what's at stake?" burned into the back of my brain. Wish I could take another class with him.

He is an outgoing teacher and chill. The only problem I had is that for the essays I did not really know exactly what he wanted. The essays were kinda stressful. Pay attention and ask questions when needed but do not expect it to be a bird course.

His essays were confusing as I was often unsure what he expected from them so make sure to ask a lot of questions. He also put us into groups to work together which was okay because I wasn't too fond about group work. The textbook is mandatory but you wont have to pay because he will give you a link to a free one.

SSH205 as a whole is an awful course and feels useless but Prof Chafe really ensures you understand everything and wants you to succeed, dont be afraid to ask questions. He provides a textbook and is lighthearted. He is a super tough grader and my friends in other classes had an easier time. I'd take again for personality if it was any other class

So the course in itself absolutely sucked, but Paul is great. Super funny, gives paragraphs of feedback, super nice. Will most likely never use this way of writing again... but once again not paul's fault, and he is probably the most chill prof to take this course with so id pick him

Um he's a really nice guy himself. During lectures he's extremely open to questions and usually gives really good responses, he also gives really good feedback once you go to him with work. Personally, I just hated the course a lot, its just a really awful course, not much he can do tbh. Going to class isn't mandatory, just read the text.

Out of all the SSH profs you can take, TAKE PAUL! He has clear grading criteria which helps and bonus assignments that boost your average by 5%. It's a hard course but book office hours with him, read the free textbook he provides, do the homework by his criteria, and attend class and you'll get an A. He's a very helpful, super nice & caring prof!

Whatever u think u know about essays goes out the door in this class. To be frank, this was not my favourite course as it required a lot of WORK. But he genuinely cares about u learning and makes effort to help when needed. He gives opportunities to boost ur mark and ensure to TAKE IT. Reach out to him when u need help, ur grade will thank u!

Professor Chafe makes you work for your grade. He also makes sure to give you clear instructions to properly complete each assignment. Be sure to complete the assigned reading and writing assignments. Ask Prof for help in lecture or during office hours. If you do those things, you will master the skills you need to ace the exam.

Here's the thing with Professor Chafe, he teaches a challenging class, so people sometimes do not want to hear negative feedback; this is how I felt when I first started. When you have a one-on-one conversation with him, he is very kind and wants to see his students thrive. If you're an amazing writer, you'll have no problems with his class.

First thing I got to say is that SSH205, across ALL profs teaching it, is a not an easy course. However from my interactions with other profs, Paul Chafe is the best, imo. You have to try and ask questions, DO the bonus assignments because I promise you, THEY HELP (especially if you have no idea on your thesis). But its not a bird/easy course!

Great & engaging prof. Syllabus was 4 graded homework, 2 essays, proposal + exam essay + 2 optional extra credit. Also let us redo an assignment. Showing up in class isnt essential since its not a knowledge based course but he usually shares exactly what he expects with ur writing. So show up if u can but not detrimental to your mark if u dont.

Professor Chafe provides students with many opportunities to improve their writing. He gives two bonus assignments and provides very thorough feedback on assignments. Some of these comments that students are leaving are way too harsh. Just be respectful, work hard, get your work done and you will have no issues!

He likes students who take the initiative, so make sure you ask questions and book office hours when necessary. It can be the difference between producing a good idea versus a bad one. He definitely is a misunderstood prof when people label him arrogant, but in reality, he is just being direct by telling you what needs to be done to succeed.

Show up to his lectures. He goes into everything in detail and is clear on what his expectations are. Lots of homework. He is VERY accommodating if you have your AAS in place. Paul Chafe is that of an Enigma. His dry sarcastic humor fills the room of void emotionless faces during his 8am SSH205 lectures. He is nice, but definitely a Prof that you either love or hate. Be prepared for weekly homework, Broad Feedback, and everything else that comes with a "Heavily Caffeinated Bald Middle aged Star wars Obsessed Father of 2"

Repeats a lot of stuff and some lectures could easily be cut short a couple of hours. SO MUCH HOMEWORK. Homework and the extra credit wasn't difficult just tedious, but it was helpful in boosting my grade from an B to an A. He makes very clear what he doesn't want (i.e. summarizing) and gives A LOT of feedback; listen and you'll be fine.

As long as you attend class you should be fine. keep up with the weekly materials, he send emails out every week to remind you of what to do. Allows multiple resubmissions to make sure you can really write your essay. Dont cheat and you will do great

As much as the class is painful to take (which is just the nature of the course, no matter which prof you take it with) he makes lectures fun and will give feedback if you ask. Yes, Paul's class is challenging but thats because it's the foundation of your academic career. Go to class, do your homework and TRY. All the homework is building blocks towards your major assignments - designed to help you get a better grade. He challenges you but wants you to succeed. His instruction 100% made me a better reader and writer.

He let us resubmit our essay proposals. Overall He's a good professor. Compared to other professors teach Academic Writing and Research he is a saint in terms of marking and teaching. So if you want to pass this mandatory class in your program do whatever you can in power to get him to be your prof. Keep in mind he talks. He's also very funny.

Attendance is expected and participation exercises are due before each class. Class is unnecessarily long but prof makes up for it with his sense of humour. Tough marker but gives you everything you need to succeed. Extra credit assignments towards end of term. Wants students to succeed and will give you lots of feedback. Has flexible office hours.

Prof Chafe was more hands-off than I expected for an online course. Basically teach yourself, but office meetings are essential to build a relationship and gauge his expectations. He does not like standard 3-body paragraph essays and just wants to read something interesting. As with any arts course, grading criteria and feedback is a bit vague.

I don't why so many people were complaining but I really loved paul chafe he can be really picky but he gives detailed feedback really wanting you to do good. A lot of mini homework assignments are given, 2 exams and bonus assignments as well. Definitely go to his office hours it helps more. Overall though I really loved Dr Chafe.

In general, SSH 205 is pretty pointless and honestly quite tedious. However, I found the online CSSH 205 version to be a lot easier and better than the in-person version. I do not really understand the poor ratings for Dr. Chafe though, his marking is tough, but follow all his instructions, take his feedback, and he's the best prof for SSH 205.

This class is tedious and has lots of assignments, but it is not difficult. I only tried the online version of SSH205 and I think this class requires a lot of effort, but your energy will pay off. Go to his office hours, try your best, and ultimately you can do well. Everything in the online class is take-home, use that you your advantage.

Dr. Chafe, is an amazing professor, I don't know why he has such a harsh mark. Yes you have to read outside the class(this is uni), but the assignments are about relevant news.
