Great lectures, keeps it interesting
Informative, rough grader.. but he is available to you for help.
usually history is such a bore to me. he keeps it interesting. every assignment/test is writing. thats the only thing i did not enjoy too much because i do not have stregnths in that area.
One of the best professors in the History Department, and at Fordham. Lectures are concise and interesting. Reading materials are extremely valuable. A true mentor. My highest recommendation!!
Cool guy who has lots of real life experiences of the South. Civil War buff and his class on this subject is a can't miss. Cares about his students a lot.
I love this man. I took three of his courses including his seminar. Very informative and smart man. This is what teaching is all about. Hard grader, but the material is hard and complex, and he makes sure that you understand it. Take him!
Self-absorbed to the point of distraction. Takes rather interesting subject matter and screws it up by injecting his (usually inartful and flawed) opinion at every juncture. He doesn't bring perspective, he brings an agenda.
very good man...never fell asleep in his class...hard grader tho i must admit..n he gives alot of written work
good teacher, easy course...3 papers, 3 tests + a final...gives you questions for test and finals...cant get easier than that...grading fairly leniant...lecture class and tests taken striaght from in class notes...lets you out atleast 15 mins early
to be honest, i really dont like this teacher. it is an american history class that only talks about the civil war, that is ALL you will learn about. he makes you write a paper about the book he wrote....never good.
great teacher, interesting class
lots of notes, but interesting class, at least i think so. he really loves history and knows a lot. two tests, which are essay questions, two papers, and a final, thats it. really nice guy too. and if you happen to be from the south, he will love you
Let's just put it this way...Cimbala = THE DUDE. Nice guy, makes you a better writer, really wants to see you do well in his class. Always available for help in his office hours...no bullshit though! Do the work and you'll do fine
Nice guy, likes to humor the class and add a story or two from his life experiance. I enjoy his stories way more than his lectures. Lots of reading but easy grader.
You won't learn any new info...all you do is civil war through civil rights. i hoped we would go further. lectures are ok. not much work but 2 big papers, 4 exams, three outside reading books not inclusing text. Nice guy but class can get tedious.
the first book he made us read about historians was pretty awful... the workload is alright... just say you're from georgia and he'll like you.
Class is great! Fun and interesting. Warning: want an A? you prob won't get it. Doesn't give them out often. I wanted one so badly, thought this would be easy class to get one, aced some tests and papers but still got a B+, can't forgive him for th
My favorite teacher at Fordham so far, his lectures are really interesting, he's a pretty hard grader but you definitely learn your stuff
good man. he's from trenton and he loves to talk about nj... so if you're from jersey take him! essays and tests arent exactly easy, and he doesnt like to give out a ton of A's, but if you take good note you'll be fine
Probably my favroite teacher at Fordham. Just a cool dude...wants to see you do well. Has great stories and really is willing to work with the students. You may not get a A, but whatever you get, you deserve. Don't **** him, he won't **** you. He'll make a better writer too. THE MAN!
Still the man! He's really one of the best teachers here at Fordham. Knows his stuff really well. He grades fairly on all assignments, and really wants to make you a better writer. Go to his office hours for help, which will mostly likely increase your grade in the end. AWESOME PROFESSOR
he is a great professor and classes are interesting. he does have an arogant attitude and does not give out A's often. it is a fun class if you are ok with a B.
Wel first of all ... he does give A's, because I got one ... that aside, he's absolutely brilliant, very funny and pleasant, and very accessible and willing to help individual students. He's helped my writing more than any other professor at Fordham.
Just do yourself a favor and take him. He'll make you a better writer and a better student. He's tough, but just don't BS him and you'll be fine. He wants good work, and the reward for that is you have a great time in class with a really funny, intelligent guy. One of the best Fordham has.
Cimbala gives out A's, you just have to work hard and show that you want it. He always gave a great lecture for every class. The Final grade is broken down from 3 tests (usually in class essays). The questions will usually ask you to talk about a pivitol moment in history, he is really into that.
first of all his lectures are boring, he is all over the place and skips back and forth through time periods. Also he will not make you a better writer, the only class i have ever gotten bad grades in history was his. He is a waste of my money. I want a refund Fordham.
Right...then I guess you probably wasted his time too. Cimbala isn't easy: you get what you deserve. If you put effort in, however, you become a better reader, writer and student. He goes off on tangents to tell fun stories and make class interesting. Still one of Fordham's best, take him!
Easily one of Fordham's finest. Good lecturer, funny guy, and so much help with anything when you go to visit his office hours. He's not easy; he makes you work for your grade, but in the end you take a lot out of the class. Can tell he's at Fordham because he loves the students and what he does
He looks like geroge costanza but hes not funny...hes arrogant and condescending...he wont even learn your name..definitely avoid....
makes class interesting and entertaining but is a really hard grader.
interesting, somewhat. very opinionated and wont necessarily see your side if he doesnt want to. harrrd grader... especially if you take him spring semester, you can count on a 20 page report due the day after spring weekend.
he says he dusnt giv A's. his lectures r veRy boring nd he constantly wanders off da topic. u hav 2 read 4 books nd write a 20 page paper on dem. i wish i cud drop dis class rite now but its 2 late 2 drop it. u dont want him as ur teacher. AVOID HIM!!!
Wow, since your so literate and can express yourself so well, I can see why you "didn't get da A u wanted". For those of your who actually speak English and actually care about learning something in college, Cimbala is awesome; good man, hard work, but you learn a lot. And people who substitute one letter for whole words should be shot.
Minor thinker, unknown outside his department. Prattles on about trivial facts, many of which are derived from his self-aggrandized experiences. Don't take him unless you feel like wasting valuable credits, time and money. Buy Ken Burns' book; it provides more insight, analysis and critical thought. Unfortunately, I'm not kidding.

Cimbala ruined my Thanksgiving break by having a 15-20 page paper due once I returned. Gloats about being from New Jersey, no relevant place in the class. Condescending at times. says students should read New York Times. He thinks the Wall Street Journal is evil. Just another typical professor who can't handle criticism. Find someone else.
HE FREAKING SUCKS!!!!!!! HES ARROGANT AND RUDE. ONLY PEOPLE WHO DO NOT HAVE LIVES, BUT ENOUGH TIME TO KISS HIS BUT LIKE HIM. IF YOU WANT TO DO AN 18-20 PAGE PAPER BE MY GUEST, BECAUSE THATS EXATLY WHAT YOULL GET.
Undoubtedly difficult, but your grade simply reflects your effort (or rather for some, lack thereof). Excellent readings, humerous lecturer, and will bend over backwards to help you in any way. He truly enjoys getting to know individual students, and will never belittle you for your political beliefs (trust me, I'm a Republican).
Cimbala is great. He's tough, but brilliant. Will go to great lenghts to help students. Easy guy to talk to to, but wants nothing but the best from his students. Your grade in his class will clearly reflect what you put into it. Yea, he makes you write a 20 page paper, but I bet no teacher will make you a better writer. Take him!
Alright, his paper and whole grading system sucks, but if you just go see him and talk to him he basically tells you what to write... Yeah, but NJ is always brought up... and so is the NY Times... sorry Liberal Left BS is not my cup of tea jackass...
at first i was scared of 20 page paper he assigned, but after i did it and received good grade i realized wasnt too bad. he is a really good professor, though hard grader if u dont write what he is exactly looking for.... i got B and put in good amount of work... dont be scared away with 20pg paper
Yea, he's tough. But go to him for help and you'll do fine. He'll make you a much better writer...wants no BS though. Your grade will clearly reflect the work you put in. Funny guy, great teacher, one of Fordham's best. Even if you aren't a historian, take his class. It's like watching the History Channel but you can ask questions.
Good class. Clever guy. Challenges you, as he should.
I LOVE THIS MAN. He was great and used a lot of humour in his classes. Yes, the class was intense, but it is college, after all...TAKE HIM!
Doc C is perhaps one of best professors at FU. He is passionate, loves history, has spent years doing in depth research and enjoys what he does. Yes, he is a hard grader, yes he chooses things to focus on, but if you give him the effort, it will be most rewarding. Also cares about his students when they come and talk to him and get to know him.

Good professor. First paper is very important for the Coming of the Civil War class so put the time in. I would have gotten an A in the course if I had done better on the first paper. Very reasonable guy too. The readings aren't completely necessary and neither is attendence so just read a bit and attend somewhat regularly and you'll do well.
Absolutely the best American History Teacher at Fordham. Loves the Civil War, New Jersey and Rock 'n Roll. Spends half the class talking about how these relate to the subject of history. You have one long history paper on the books he asigns a midterm and final. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!!!
If you take good notes, TAKE CIMBALA. Intresting, funny, knows his stuff. He is exactly what I envisioned a real college professor to be. Rarely takes attendance. No homework, no tests, just one paper, the midterm, and the final. Write well and you'll do fine.
Dr C was one of my favorite profs. Yes he will push you and the class pretty hard but he's totally into the subject and knows lots of stuff. He is also funny. This is the kind of prof I thought going to college was about
Prof Cimbala is BRILLIANT! I never liked American history before taking his class but now, I really enjoy it. He only assigns two long papers and a final. Readings are not entirely necessary but you should attend class as often as possible. Sure, the class is challenging, but it pushes you to work hard. I HIGHLY recommend Prof. Cimbala. HE ROCKS!
Awesome guy. Come to class on time, hates lateness with no excuse. if your not going to be there just email him (with a good reason). No homework except for 2 papers over the semester (~15pgs each) and the final. Very generous grader, just do the work. Very smart, sometimes class gets a little dry, but its worth the easy grading and the no homework.
Am History. One of the worst teachers I've ever had (def the worst I've had at Fordham). His class is incredibly boring and you learn nothing. I was excited about taking him after reading all these great reviews, but I was very disappointed. Easy grader, but not worth the pain of sitting through rambling and tangents. Obsessed with slavery.
(Continued from the last post) I actually think he may have written all the positive reviews... I wouldn't be surprised. Avoid. 2 15-page papers and final. I love American History, but this wasn't American History-- it was slavery, the south and rock and roll. Dumb.
One of the best professors at Fordham. Two major papers were assigned and one final. He knows what he is talking about and he loves it. I would definitely take him again. He is a lot of work though so if you are not interested in the civil war, then do not take him. I leaned a lot from him.
I love American History & I was excited to take this class, but it was incredibly stressful. He assigns 7 books to read- 3 for a 15 pg paper and 4 for a 20 pg one. He only lectures about slavery & the Civil War, which were what both the papers were about too. It's not worth the stress, especially since you don't learning anything other than slavery
Eh. He's a good guy, but it doesn't take away from the fact that for an intro American History class, you're given seven books to read for two papers, about 15 pages each. No midterm, but the final is an essay covering pretty much everything you've learned in the class. Lectures can sometimes be boring, unless he goes off on a tangent.
Cimbala is a really cool guy. He knows everything and talks about history in interesting ways from the past compared to today. Lot of reading but it can be done if you have time/care. Participate in class and you will be fine.
Cimbala is great. really nice, really helpful and interesting. focuses mostly on slavery, civil rights, and progressive movements. take as much notes as you can - whatever he says in class is important to know for the final. two 15 page papers and a final. take his class! not as hard as it sounds
He's a pretty nice guy, but his class is very difficult. Going to class is a boring waste of time. You have to read a ton to do well and the 10 and 15 page paper are both graded fairly harshly. You only have those papers and a final (which isn't too bad) to be graded. I would avoid.
A good, interesting professor. Very easy to get a B, but extremely difficult to get an A.
A good, interesting teacher. Very hard to get an A but easy to get a B.
Very nice, although it is hard to get an A , B is not as bad in his class. Just be well prepared.
His classes are straight up lecture but he keeps them interesting with funny anecdotes. He doesnt care if you come to class or not. He assigns a lot of reading and an essay for each book but if you can find summaries and make a good argument for your thesis, you don't really have to read. You probably wont get an A but you can definitely get a B+
Very helpful during office hours, could be a little rude but he is definitely boring, if you do not want to fall sleep at 8.30 am do not take cimbala in the morning. Aside from that Cimbala is a fair grader very easy B but hard to get an A . Assigns three essays, and only one final exam throughout the entire semester. Be ready to write a lot.
American: Lectures feel longer than they are, so avoid that 8:30 slot, but if you are at all interested in history, Cimbala's class will be a rewarding experience if you're willing to put forward some critical thinking. Just three papers and a final. Asking yourself questions is more important than asking him, and he will see that in your papers.
You never have to go to class except for maybe the first three, and the classes when you have to hand in your papers. Only 3 assignments which were all papers and a final which is an in class essay. Easy B, impossible A. Only one kid with over a B+ in my class. Very hard grader if you want higher than a B. He talks about his life and rocknroll
I don't understand what his problem is. The highest grade he gives is a b+? how haughty. Schadenfreude at its best.
I wish he went easier on us. This class was extremely difficult. I don't think he understands that this was a freshman 1st semester class.
Lectures are long and boring. No one goes to class.
He should not teach at Fordham.
Awful
He does not care about his students. If you're okay with doing the bare minimum and getting a b, take this class. Papers are really easy to BS Don't buy the books
He is so annoying. Dont go to class. There is no need.
Unqualified. All he talks about is performing with Bruce Springsteen which he didnt do save your money take a diff history course
You wont learn anything His test was extremely difficult He cant teach
There are always good professors at every university. He is not one of them. You're not allowed to absent or late ever. But he's late everyday and even he took a week off to go on vacation. I want my money back Fordham.
He's a nightmare
He need to retire. He is bad professor and really can not teach material. Only focus on what he did in past. Hard hard grader. Every body sleeping in class.
During our final, he told our section that he would give us all half a letter grade higher than what we deserve since he's soo giving. But it was complete bs. The people that work hard get nothing out of this class except for a gpa killer. The people that dont buy the books, slack off, skip class, get undeserving grades. His grading system is bogus
Simply put, he is Mr, Devlin from iCarly.
I have Dr. Cimbala for US History. His lectures are appallingly boring, and for the midterm paper (there's no actual test) he's making us read 3 books at about 200 pages each and write a 15-page paper on them. He's condescending and arrogant. Knows his stuff, but relays it in such a way that makes you want to fall asleep. If you can avoid him, do.
Professor Cimbala is a great teacher. While his lectures may be long and he is a hard grader, if you go to his office hours he is sure to help. Even if you get a B on the first paper you can still get an A in the class if you go to him for help. If you really enjoy American history take his class.
Classes are lecture style. You don't need to read the textbook. There are three papers based on books and a final exam. He tells you everything you need to know for the papers and final in class so attendance is important.
Definitely a tough grader if you want an A, but I'm under the impression that as long as you do all the work and participate, you won't get lower than a B. I took him twice and got a B the first time, an A the second time.
Very boring class but easy grader if the work is put in
Dr. Cimbala is probably a really cool guy, we just irritate him. Class completely consists of long, boring lecture. DO NOT be late or he will call you out. 3 papers and a final doesn't sound like a lot but somehow he makes it a lot. Pay attention in class, should be ok, just don't expect an A. He doesn't give them out often. Not helpful.
The class is easy as long as you take notes during the classes where he explains the papers. He basically tells you what to write in the papers. Follow that criteria and you'll be fine. His lectures are long and boring. He always looks towards the back of the classroom when speaking. He is horrible during office hours. No help at all.
Gets off topic a lot. I mean a LOT. Not many tests but my class wrote three 10 page papers. Just write them off of what he tells you in class and you'll be fine. Luckily I love US history, so I was fine in the class, but if you hate history, you will loathe this class. Be careful.
Although it might not initially appear so, Dr. Cimbala does care about his students, so make every effort to see him for help if you need it. He loves to see his students improve and ask questions. Make every effort to show that you're trying to do well and he'll make every effort to get you the best grade possible.
I can't believe that people actually think he is tough. He assigns a lot of reading but it is not needed. All there is, is one 10-15 page paper over three books (wrote/read in one day and I got an A) and the final which is so easy if you go to class, plus he curves. If you show up, listen to his rock band stories, he'll like you and give you an A.
Prof. Cimbala is always available outside of the class and I would definitely recommend visiting him at least 2 weeks before each paper is due. He is a tough grader but very lenient. Don't show up late. I would take him again but he's a little intimidating.
Extremely boring. The class isn't hard because all you have to do is do the assignments, which require outside reading. Do NOT buy the textbook!!! He will always tell you that you should be reading it, but honestly it is not worth it! Half the time he talks about pizza or music so if you took a high school history course you should be fine.
Great guy. Very clear about what he wants from his students. 2 Papers and a Final Exam. The papers are long but he basically tells you what to right about. He gives you the questions that are going to be on the final exam beforehand. He often gets off topic a lot and tells stories.
Just an awesome professor. Kind of how you imagine a old school professor to be. Very smart, very passionate and definitely knows his stuff. Only down side is he gives huge papers.
Dr. CImbala is one of the finest teachers at Fordham. For my class, we had two 10-12 page papers, and a final in class essay. He is lecture heavy but he loves to talk about New Jersey and his life. If you go to his office hours he will go over your papers and give helpful feedback. Given the chance, I would take a class taught by Dr. Cimbala again.
Dr. Cimbala only lectures in class and will never write down a single note. Its tough to stay awake through at 8:30 in the morning. You are graded on a 10 page paper based on 2, 250 page each novels and another 12 page paper. He is ;very clear about what he wants and if you give it to him you'll get an A. The final was easy and was just an essay
Professor Cimbala is extremely knowledgeable about the Civil War. He clearly explains what he expects from you in the class and on the papers. There are two papers that are 20 and 15 pages long. However, it looks like he stops reading after the first 3 or 4 pages and gives most people a decent grade. Lecture heavy and difficult to stay awake
The class itself is a joke, you just sit there and wait for it to be over. He lectures the entire time, but not necessarily on the topic. He loves a good tangent. The class was primarily focused on two papers which were graded harshly. Unfortunate professor, but not impossible. Go to office hours for your papers and you'll be fine.
Prof. Cimbala is awesome. He's a really knowledgeable guy who epitomizes the college professor. He's incredibly lenient with grading and lateness as long as you attend class and listen to his lectures. The only homework (and grades) are essays on a few books (that you don't have to read) and the final is very straightforward if you go to class.
