great sense of humor, hard for non pol sci majors to understand
Likes talking about New York. Explains things pretty well, not too hard to pass
rarely went to class, rarely listened to lecture, rarely got less than an A on a
Very knowledgable. Willing to teach you.Sense of humor appearred later in class.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS BY HIM...Hard tests, can not lecture, very confusing
Great prof., the lectures can be boring but you don't need to listen anyway.
A very good and knowledgable professor. Lectures are always interesting.
Poor teacher all around
a political scientiest not a teacher
Loves to talk and gets borning sometimes, but easy. Don't take in the morning
Smart, funny, interesting-do the reading, get the grade
lectures sometimes unclear, makes tests confusing, good study guides
Smart guy, very willing to help, although a little boring
Nice guy. The people who don't like him, are lazy people who don't work hard.
lectures are dry, always willing to help, very easy class w/ a little effort
He knows what he's talkimg about, but he really doesn't answer your questions.te
BORING LECTURES, essay tests, boring!
If you read the material and pay attention,an easy A, lectures are pretty boring
boring lectures, just highlight book from outline, willing to help though...

good teacher but is corny. has pop quizes at end of semester!!!!
too smart to understand if your iq isn't over 130
condesending of students, yells a lot, but easy grader
nice guy pop qz at the end of sem so you can miss the begining
Goes Right by the book, little boring, show up = A
Very disgruntled man. His head may explode if you walk in late.
Not a real hard class, lectures can be boring and many corny jokes
No Comments
Laughs at own jokes when nobody else does. Very nice guy. Smart as hell.
A lot of nervous habits! Can be boring, but always willing to help! Easy A
Nice guy, but boring class. Easy to understand and very helpful.
He's so nice and he tries hard to make the class enjoyable.
Nice guy, can be helpful gets off on tangents, not clear about material on tests
who cares about the jokes, it's an easy A, 1/3 of final and midterm is takehome!
excellent teacher. knows his stuff.
Interesting, intelligent, and nice guy..goes off on tangents..tells dumb jokes
He thinks he is funny. I did not know if I should laugh to make him feel better
belittling, condescending, arogant, angry, and boring
extremely intelligent, constantly smiles as if he is extremely proud of what he is saying, wierd sense of humor, wanders during lecture, nice guy
Way to informative!! He is way to proud of his BORING lectures, STOP SMILEING!! and he wanders like crazy!!

goes off on tangents but some of it is interesting not everyone likes him
For first time teaching the class it was alright, but it was boring at times.
Does a weird thing with he is beard and smiles when he thinks he is funny or smart. Hard and confusing class at first but it ends up making you think and being rewarding.
Doesn't care about students' grades, unorganized, hard to understand, but funny at times.
when i asked for help he said no! so boring, dont take this prof, almost made me change my major!
Can be a little hard to follow sometimes, but overall a fairly good teacher. He does have a little quirk - he seems to have a sly smile about everything. Don't know what that's about...
Once you understand him and his wit the class becomes easier and fun. This guy is super intelligent.
Great guy, quiet, soft-spoken...but he is a realist. If you are an optimistic person, you probably won't get his humor. Have an open mind and you will love his quirkiness. He's been through some rough times and looks to teaching as his therapy.
Easy class turned difficult with a spacy professor. Has a fetish with telling cheesy jokes and he does this funky thing with his lips. He makes you not want to go class, because he is so boring. Rambling tendancy.
Cornish is tough. When he lectures it seems as if he's lecturing to a PoliSci elite. Difficult to follow, I'd suggest reading the text, but that's as vague as he is. Has a tendency to groom facial hair while staring out into space.
The lectures aren't so bad, but the things he lectures on aren't on the tests! If it weren't for the study guides, we'd all fail. And, he add this this part to every essay question: "Place your answer in the context of the class" which no one
I thought it was going to be alot more boring than it was. He does have a qiurky thing about him, but i like it. i have learned a lot. He did seem to be teaching to people who already knew what we were there to learn, but i caught up.
This wasn't a tough class by topic, but Cornish does NOT explain his grading and does Not take aliking to students in the classroom.. Go to his office hours and It will help you tremendously
Very boring and dry. Grades pretty hard and expects way too much of his students. I think he forgets that we all have other classes other than his own... lots of boring readings and hard exams!
interesting combination of being a pretty poor professor and an overall not very nice person all at the same time. this class was a real dissapointment. i would strongly urge anyone who has time to find a different section. a semester is a long time.
horrible, this class is very boring and i would recommend that you dont take it
I really liked his classes. He is a generally easy professor if you show up for class and take notes you will do fine. I really liked the simulations that he does.
He is very arrogant and stuck on himself. The worst professor I have had. DONT TAKE HIM. Very rude to students in class and will not explain his grading policy especially participation points. Lectures are hard to follow and understand
This class was not as bad as I had expected. He wasn't mean to anyone in cass like everyone says he is. The lectures are incredibly boring, but take good notes and you'll do fine.
I was interested in the subject, but he made it so boring and he is quite vauge. On my essay he wrote "ok" and graded it 25/30. What does that mean? He grooms himself and that's super annoying. The simulation is stupid and redundant. Typical, boring prof. I had a neutral experience.
Im interested in the topic, he does make it boring. There's a lot of reading and the simulation requires a lot of work. I would advise to write the mid term essay in advance to study for the test..he will go off on tangets sometimes as well and its hard to figure out where he is wanting to go.
I've had him before and I don't think he's a bad prof....its not that he makes it boring but some of the subjects are just impossible to make interesting.. I admit I have missed a ton of class and my grade is suffering because of it. GO TO CLASS and dont hand in stuff late... major deductions!!
I BEG you to take another prof. This was the worst ever. He is terrible, grooms himself and thinks he is all that. Imitating to see him @ the office. Not helpful, and all directions are vauge.
I had him for other courses but after this class I was very dissapointed. I fail the 2nd essay but he never gave it back to me? Very boring class. If you dont like poli sci do NOT take this class or prof. If you need it for your major it would not be that bad but the reading is difficult and boring!
not as bad as everyone says. is very boring but has alot of enthusiasism. if you can spit back what he says in class for papers, youll do fine.
He's a world class-jerk. Doesn't care about anyone or anything but himself. Very arrogant. Not helpful and very rude and inconsiderate of others. Likes to talk down on people if they answered one his questions in his lecture classes. Goes off tangents and uses fancy words and confuses people
A good class. It helps you learn about American government so you can be a better citizen. He does get off topic frequently, but usually on an interesting current events subject. Very helpful, and the readings were quite good.
He is not a horrible prof., the material is just not super exciting. He was very nice the whole semester and it was an easy class. I have an A and I didn't even buy the books! Just go to class and give him back the material on exams that he gives you, and you will be fine.
Gets a bad rap. You think the exams will be super hard based on the lectures, but they are NOT. A somewhat boring class if you don't have people who like to discuss in class, then he'll just talk the whole time of course.
I like this guy! Not the most exciting class, but it is a college PLS course. As long as you go to class and pay attention there is no reason to not like Prof. Cornish.
A good guy who is stuck teaching a dry subject. I like his style, but the content of this class was boring. I suppose it was ok for being a political theory class, but not enough practical discussion for my taste. Prof. Cornish is eager to help outside of class, so visit his office. Passionate about his subject, which helps with the dryness.
Course is broken up into three sections, the first one is the most boring, so stick with the class because the last 2/3 isn't as dry. Very helpful prof with fair exams & projects. Be sure to participate in class so he knows who you are or else he'll nail you with a low participation grade, which can affect your final grade as a result. Take him.
This was the first and time he taught this class. The whole class is based on Canadian Politics. I know it sounds really boring, and at times it was, but I never read either of the two books required for the class. He dosnt write much on the board and what he does write isnt helpful. Go to class, pay attention, and you will pass easily!
pretty dry class but good prof. he tries to keep the subject flowing but it's a pretty dry subject. if there are no talkers in your class it can be a very long period.
Class was kind of boring, not because of the professor, but because of the subject. He tries to keep it as interesting as possible and does a fairly good job of it.
Fantastic professor. Makes some corny jokes, but really knows the subject and does a great job of presenting different viewpoints.
Seems like a decent enough guy, but he tends to ramble quite a bit. He tends to base most of his lectures off the blackboard slides so things tend to get boring pretty quick. His exams are also pretty tough because he likes to take material straight out of the book rather than covering the points he made in lecture.
I got a B+ but that was with mistakes on my part. Very interesting class but can get a little boring at times. You can get a decent grade in the class if you take very good notes in the class. He's very good at explaining difficult concepts, and honestly you don't really have to read the book as long as you attend class. The simulation was fun
Paul is a good guy. and a great political science professor to take if you are interested in the subject. You will learn a lot and he is great at presenting the matierial. Exams are pretty self explanatory and not a lot of multiple choice. Grades papers a little difficultly but overall a good professor take him especially if u r a poly sci major
Very uninteresting subject matter but this man knows his stuff. I dont know where people are getting this notion that he is a jerk. he is very nice especially if u go in for office hours on ur paper it is extremely helpful. not the easiest prof but you will learn all of the viewpoints
He's nice.
Class can be boring at times but Prof. Cornish is incredibly knowledgeable. Tests are straightforward and the review in class is always super helpful. Pretty easy class overall.
Professor Cornish is an intelligent, helpful, and funny professor. You won't understand his humor if you're an idiot. He makes the subject as interesting as possible. Let's be honest, how interesting can American Constitutional Foundations be? He rubs his tummy a lot. He also grooms himself in class. Looks a whole lot like Santa Claus.
Awesome guy, very boring though. The class is easy and he is a very easy grader. I didn't put much time into the class and got a good grade. The tests are mainly essay tests, but he grades them fairly and gives a full review.
Prof Cornish is a very nice guy, his humor is dry but he is really easy going. If you do the massive amount of reading assigned you will get an A. The lectures are only helpful to clarify reading. Coming to class is not enough for a good grade. You have to do the reading.
Interesting. Explained content well. Willing to go on tangents to discuss student questions and thoughts. Tests about understanding, not memorizing. Overall, a terrific prof!
Professor Cornish may be interesting, but if only if you can keep up with his reading. He rely's heavily on essays and you have to read more than in all of my other four courses combined. He is a super nice guy, but it is a large work load and he doesnt seem to realize that students cant keep up with it.
I have a 3D Animation class with him and he is a pretty good teacher. He can be pretty goofy and he does make awkward jokes sometimes, but it's funny. He's pretty lenient with homework and it's an easy class overall.
Great prof. Very friendly and willing to help students understand the material. One of my favorite PLS faculty members. He makes it clear what he expects and if you go to class and pay attention, you'll be fine. Highly recommend!
Easy class, lots of textbook use. Sort of ambiguous questions he asks. Skipped a lot of classes, yet did fairly well in the class. Thought provoking conversations.
Professor Cornish is an awesome guy. His class tends to be long and boring, but he is truly one of the nicest guys ever. He wants the best for his students. Taking this class in the summer was long, but well worth it. Overall, an easy class and I would recommend him.
Professor Cornish is the best professor to ever walk the halls of AuSable. Subject matter is not all that interesting but he is willing to go above and beyond to see you succeed.
Took the class thinking I would learn about human rights but it's all about philosophers views on human rights. Hope you like sitting through many extremely monotone lectures if you're taking this class. Also, quizzes every week over pounds of reading. Good luck!
Good professor, who is passionate about the topic and it allows you to be able to participate actively in class
Cornish was one of my favorite poli sci professors at GVSU. HIs lectures were a little boring but he enjoys teaching about supreme court cases. His assignments are fairly easy and he has a fun court case simulation assignment. His tests can be intense but he gives out a great study guide to help you out. A little awkward but not bad.
He was a great Prof. The lectures were clear, and he had a dry sense of humor. The Supreme Court lectures were in depth , and worth it.
This class was not what I thought it was going to be. It was not treated like a 100 Level. The Professor is very Nice and helps you.
He is a very nice professor, and will answer any question you have. His humor is dry but he laughs at his own jokes so you can't help but laugh along. He isn't too caught up on the quantity of the essays, it's more about quality. Has two question quizzes on mondays. I only read for the quizzes and did fine. I suggest taking him.
He is a very nice man however, he is very soft spoken so it is easy to drift off during his lectures. If any of you are taking this class for a gen ed, just don't. This class was very difficult especially the papers. I never fully understood what we were learning. Unless you are big on political science just do yourself a favor and switch out.
Cornish is a very knowledgeable man! All tests and quizzes are essay format. Paragraph to a page. He communicates over email and BB consistently with reminders. While take home essays are graded toughly, he gives you plenty of time and resources to do well. Great gen ed and interesting course!
Boring and extremely monotone. He will talk with no slides the entire lecture. Hard to listen to him and pay attention. He is a fairly easy grader, though. Papers aren't too hard, tests aren't too hard. Just very boring. 510 would not take again. Didn't have to read the textbook at all and did fine.
Prof. Cornish is truly a superb professor. His intelligence is very apparent. There is quite a bit of reading (sometimes close to 100 pages per week), but all of the reading is so worth it. You learn so much. I may be biased because I am a political science major, but I think that all people could take something away from the class.
Intro to Human Rights is kind of an interesting course. Prof. Cornish has a soft voice that might cause your mind to wander, so try to focus. Maybe record his lectures. He's a reasonable grader, and his tests are quizzes aren't that difficult as long as you skimp through the assigned readings and listen to his lectures. Participation matters.
One of the best PoliSci classes I have taken! Professor Cornish loves the topics he teaches and will answer any questions you have to be it in an email, blackboard, or in class. He does assign two papers, he also gives the option for one long paper inserted, but are pretty easy to write as long as you start early. And Make sure you go to class!!!
Prof. Cornish is a really nice guy. He is there if you need help with something. However, his lectures can be very tough to follow. You need the book for this class. Some of the papers are pretty tough if your not interested in Constitutional law. Highly recommend going to class to get notes. Overall, average.
Professor Cornish is an amazing teacher of political thought. I love to see when a professor is passionate about what they teach. He's willing to work around your schedule and help the student.
Professor Cornish was easily the worst professor I've had at GVSU. While it's evident that he knows the material really well, he has a major problem conveying the material in such a way that is clear and understandable to someone who is unfamiliar with course material. His lectures were dull and basically consisted of him rambling on. AVOID.
Paul is such an amazing instructor! Not only did I lose weight in his class, he made it fun! He is really caring, and understanding. I highly recommend !
Personally, I think this professor was the best professor I had this semester. The Grand Valley political science and philosophy program is so underrated, and its teachers like this who show students how important ethics are to a well rounded education. He was an easy grader, understanding, and I learned more from the course than I had expected.
Great professor. Quizzes are easy as long as you read. Midterm and final are easy.
Weekly quizzes, often he gives the question before hand, not to difficult if you at least skim. Didn't understand half of what I was learning about half the time but still did well on quizzes and the tests. Start your paper early! The paper dropped my grade as I didn't start early enough and was barely able to even write it.
He gives lots of reading but i never usually did any of it. He is super off track and its so hard to study because i don't know if what he is saying is an anecdote or actual things i need to learn.
He is a great professor but sometimes he gets off topic for the entire lecture time so you do not learning anything about that topic. Also he uses so many large words everyone in the class seems to be lost .
He assigned a lot of reading, but I didn't do probably 75% of it. His lectures are the main thing to pay attention to and he provides study guides for the exams. His lectures can be rambling sometimes but overall, the class was great and I learned a lot. We had to write two papers over the semester and he was very helpful with them.
Paul Cornish is a really nice guy with clear expectations. There's weekly quizzes but he tells you exactly what they'll be over. I wouldn't wait until the LAST minute to start the semester writing assignment, but also don't stress about it sooner than you need to. The books are helpful for the quizzes. The midterm and final paper are fairly easy.
Great professor. Very easy grader so long as you show up to class and engage a bit. Not sure why his rating is so low. I had him for 2 classes this semester and I am happy in both.
I enjoyed the class perhaps more because the subject matter was super interesting. I have to give Professor Cornish credit for that as his choice of readings was really good even if excessive all the time. He is an easy grader on exams and a fair but tough grader on papers. This class will seem overwhelming at times but it is worth it!
Took him for clas. Pol. Thought. Easy prof. Grades easily. Lectures and content can be a bit boring. He grades papers and reading summaries easily. Just pay attention in class and take some notes. A nice and helpful guy.
This class was very interesting. Prof cornish taught this class well, good subject matter, not boring at all. Hes a good prof, gives good feedback. Lectures can be a bit long at times. Do some of the reading and go to most classes and you should be fine. Easy grader on papers and assignments. Overall nice and helpful guy.
I took prof Cornish for intro to human rights and there were 15-20+ page readings for each class MWF. He doesn't seem quite passionate about the material (he doesn't call on students to participate tho) At the end of the semester, there's a big book report, another paper, then a quiz portion. The demands for a level 100 course are quite excessive.
I took Intro to Human Rights with Prof Cornish, and wouldn't recommend. This class made me want to scream into a pillow and bang my head on a wall simultaneously. He's passionate about the material but doesn't know how to teach his students the material and there was waaay too much reading assigned every week. He's an easy grader though.
Took PLS-231 as part of my Core Requirements. Professor Cornish is a fair grader and great overall prof. Always available for feedback outside of class and will be fair to you if you are honest with him. Would absolutely recommend this class to a friend. Under the circumstances of COVID-19 Professor Cornish handled the hybrid course very well!
Professor Cornish did an excellent job. He was very understanding during the pandemic which made the whole class much better. He was very creative and opened up discussions I found quite engaging. Others in my class did not enjoy his class as much, however I think that was due to material and not his teaching. Would highly recommend.
Super nice and educational professor. He definitely knows what he's talking about which makes it hard for a student in an intro class. He goes on tangents that are hard to follow because you don't know the content he is talking about. Super, super nice and supportive, just wouldn't recommend for a 100 level class.
He is so sweet and cares so much about all of his students! If you do the work you'll most likely get an A. Highly reccomend.
Loved his class and the material. I don't reccomend his course if you have trouble listening to professor's who are very monotone. Sit in the fromt if you do have trouble paying attention. His tests are long and pretty difficult, so you definitely have to stay on top of readings!
He is so monotone and hard to follow in lectures. He assigns ways too much reading each week for a 100 level class. When I fell behind and reached out for help to catch up he basically told me to go screw myself so I withdrew so I wouldnt fail.
He can be very lecture heavy, and his lectures can seem quite disorganized and monotone. But he really clearly enjoys engaging in class discussion. He is one of the few professors in the department who actually is willing to approach controversial topics and stoke real debate. There is a serious amount of reading and writing for this class.
I really enjoyed Professor Cornish's class, it's so obvious that he cares a lot about the material he teaches and his students. He just genuinely wants all of his students to do well and I think that that's really admirable. He was also super understanding of a medical issue I had earlier in the semester.
Lectures are very boring and hard to follow. He seems very nice and grades extremely easy though. If you have trouble paying attention to boring lectures do not take honestly. Weekly quizzes but they are extremely easy.
Hated this class just because of how he talked. The work was easy and I didn't do any of the reading but still got a good grade. He talks about his opinion on different subjects regularly and its really annoying.
He is so boring I could barely stay awake in class. The material wasn't confusing but its the type of class where you never know whats going on but have 100% in. Assigns way too much reading that you don't need to do. Easy quizzes every week, attendance not mandatory. Grading criteria is confusing but he gives 100% for everything anyways.
Very nice man that obviously cares about his students and the material, but he is very monotone. One of those classes that you never know what's going on. Assigns way too much reading for 100 level class. Lectures are boring and confusing because you never know what's going on. Grades assignments weirdly too.
Prof.Cornish is an invigorating and absolutely caring professor who works to help his pupils succeed, he understands + works to meet the student halfway most especially if you have things like work going on outside of school.
One of those classes where you have no idea whats going on but you get As on everything.Four essays total only about 3-4 pages each, and a small final exam. Paul is super caring and willing to work with you.Class can be a little boring, but he doesnt care about attendance.Super chill guy, doesnt make you do lots of work compared to other professors
One of those classes where you never actually know what is going on, but it's still pretty simple. His grading criteria is kind of confusing but typically gives 100 for everything. easy weekly quizzes. assigns a lot of reading, but you'll be fine without reading.
Lots of paper and readings! Get ready to read. Lectures are kinda of boring. He is super sweet and nice! He accepted late assignments and was chill. The final is not that bad. He is a nice guy. He is a tough grader when it comes to papers. If you do not do the readings, you won't understand what is going on. Do the readings!
Cornish is such a laid back and nice guy, you can tell he truly cares and at the end of the day just wants all his students to succeed. If you do all the work you'll pass the class no problem, minimal studying, minimal homework and assignments, just lots of notes.
Only a few assignments + 2 exams, super easy to do well on everything. Strange guy, but you can tell he just wants you to accomplish something. One of those people that makes you happy just watching how passionate he is about certain topics. If weird noises bother u tho fr don't sit in the front, I have never heard someone breathe louder in my life
AMAZING! Very kind and knowledgeable prof in Human Rights. Very intriguing and engaging lectures where he allows students to have a dialogue with him and ask questions. The semester project is difficult but not impossible and he gives plenty of help and guidance. Truly a professor who wants to help his students succeed.
Professor Cornish is super passionate about the material, but his lectures can be a bit dry. The workload is manageable if you stay on top of the readings. I found Unstuck AI helpful for reviewing concepts and acing the quizzes. Overall, an interesting class if you engage with it.
Paul Cornish was very energetic and passionate about what he was teaching. He made the lectures somewhat entertaining with his excitement to teach them. The topics taught were interesting and were consistent. Outside of class, he responded to emails and grading things quickly.
Professor Cornish is very passionate about human rights and you can tell he really cares about his students. The homework is manageable, and there are weekly quizzes that are open book and straight from the notes so they boost your grade. Participation counts so just go to class and pay attention and you'll be fine.
Prof. Cornish is a great professor who cares about his students and provides every opportunity to succeed. The lectures are fascinating, and he cares deeply about Human Rights. He is very inclusive and open about any discussion. The midterms and finals are very writing-heavy, consisting of a short essay and being able to list terms w/ definitions.
Speak up in class! His classes get extremely interesting when others participate. He is very understanding and a great teacher overall. Small quizzes at the end of every week, they're easy if you pay attention!
The class is very chill. Professor Cornish provides opportunities for everyone to share individual opinions in a respectful way. There aren't really wrong answers in his class if you provide your own organized takes on the material.
One of the nicest professors I've had so far. Mainly just lectures but there are weekly pop quizzes but you can use notes or they are done in groups. Willing to help outside of class and gives extensions, really just wants everyone to succeed. There are 2 essays but they really aren't bad at all. Easy A class, just complete the assignments.
