Cool teacher...looks a little like Kefer Sutherland. Great lectures and handouts, which help make up for how much there is to learn (which is a lot). He's funny, too, which is a plus. Class is pretty intense if you don't like science, but really interesting.
Very hard class, but Dassonville did his best to make it as clear as possible. The subject matter in interesting, but it's pretty science intensive. Take some biology classes and PSY 201 before you take this class!

nice guy, boring class.
Very nice, have a good sense of humor. If you study the powerpoints and the terms listed in the study guide, an A is guaranteed. You can even retake the midterms to improve your grade. He is one of the best in the department.
First rate instructor. Knows his stuff and can explain even very difficult, intricate scientific research. Is also a nice guy. What a great combination of characteristics! Take his classes.
Does a good job of teaching very complicated material to people with no background in the subject.
Great teacher, really wants students to succeed!
Not fun. Made my college experience awful. He has a horrible attitude and is extremely pretentious analogous to about all of the UofO psychology professors. Awfully easy as well.
He's technical, but I don't think he's inspired by the material at all. Only the movies in section are the only part of his curriculum that show how incredible the brain is. You'll learn, but he won't make it a subject you want to go into.
He is an intelligent and friendly professor who keeps lectures interesting and is clear on the information presented and what he expects. I did not think a class about the brain could be so exciting until I took this class. I highly recommend taking any of Professor Dassonville's class. You will learn a great deal of useful information.
Nice guy, but showed no interest in teaching there for he was horrible to listen to. Felt lost in the material every single lectures and the average exam grades were Ds...
His lectures were incredibly interesting, expectations were clear and grading was fair. As a bio major, this class was not too hard! It sparked my interest in neuroscience. He was helpful in office hours and generally seems like a nice guy. Highly recommend!
Great professor. Incredibly fair grader and clear on expectations. He teaches difficult material in a way that is comprehensible. Gives you every chance to learn the material. Definitely recommended.
Informative lectures, found myself somewhat frustrated by introductory nature of the class ,but found my strong interest in biopsychology from this class.Professor approachable, but absent minded to a fault-can seem like rudeness.Cares about students and his research.
Biopsych. This is a bio class, if you're not up for alot of memorization of parts of the brain and synapses stick with one of the easier psych ones. Super great prof, very helpful outside of class! Biopsych also had engaging and fun labs. Lots of memorization. Tons of knowledge. If you try hard, you will succeed!
Awful. Do not take unless you have a degree in biology. All you learn is a bunch of terms that are meaningless to anyone who hasn't previously studied the material. Professor might as well give out the terms to study and do nothing else as the class offers no coherent structure. I improved my scientific vocabulary and that is about it.
Awesome!
Interesting class. Professor is extremely approachable and nice. The labs are fun. We got to dissect a cow's eye and make a cockroaches leg dance. Requires a lot of studying.
Need to study to get a good grade. Helpful, and really easy to approach!! We got to watch a cockroach leg move to music, and dissect a cow eye. Very fun class.
Better prepare before attend class. He is a great professor. This class is so much fun. Excited about the lab. ci
I had this class at 8am so it was hard to stay awake but I don't think it would've been as bad if it was later. Lectures can be pretty boring. Tests aren't that hard if you can manage to pay attention or do the reading in the book (they are all multiple choice questions). He obviously knows what he is doing and really cares about his students.
Good teacher, very helpful. Lectures are sometimes long and boring, but he gets the information across. No final, just 3 midterms.
I took my first psych class with him and found him to be an awesome instructor. He made is seem like he was teaching to a class of 50 not 500. He wanted every student to pass and kept us updatedreminded us of assignments weekly. I would take another class with him in a heartbeat. I recommend going to lectures, although long they are helpul
The breakdown is 3 test for 60% of your grade, 10% participation, 10% research credits 4.5 hours, 20% Zap quizzes (4 questions a week). Dassonville makes a study guide for each exam. Complete the study guide and memorize it and you will do great! Memorize the powerpoint slides too. Straight forward. If you put in the time you will get an A!
He is a super easy going and funny prof. Go to class majority of the time and listentake decent notes and you will be fine. He is pretty straight forward and willing to help if you need it. Great guy and only 3 tests-no real final! I got a B+ and didn't read the book or study much.
I love his study guides, his exams are straight forward. he is a very responsive professor. I'd actually take his class again.
His lectures are painfully boring but it's not a tough class. Take good notes and you'll do fine. No cumulative final and all the tests are multiple choice.
Paul knows what he's talking about. Yes, the lectures are long but he gives breaks and is funny. The course itself is doable if you read the chapters and take notes. Not too much homework, it's about a chapter a week with online quizzing. The tests are straight-forward. Would take a class with Paul again.
As long as you know the terms the tests are easy multiple choice and no final. I found his class a breeze and can easily do hw in the lectures since there is some-just easy busy work
Dassonville was one of my favorite professors here at the University! If you do the readings, homework and pay attention in class there should no reason why you shouldn't pass. 3 midterms, no final and he makes a study guide for you! Do the study guide and you'll have no problem scoring a good grade!
Amazing and hilarious lectures. very responsive to questions. Keeps you engaged
Professor Dassonville is a great professor, one who cares for students success. Biopsychology is by far one of my favorite courses I've taken here at UO and Professor Dassonville made it very interesting. 2 midterms and a final, no homework but quizzes each week. Read if you want to succeed and do the study guides offered to do well on tests.
On average two assignments are sumitted each week, they only take an hour or so and they're easy points. You also have to participate in 4.5 hours of outside research to pass the class.
Love this professor! Although the lectures are not the most fun thing in the world, he always tries his best to make everyone laugh! Definitely recommend taking this class.
Lectures are really dry, you can learn everything you need to from the vocab in the textbook but you have to go to class for iclicker points. Provides study guides for every chapter. You only cover 8 chapters so the class is extremely easy.
Dassonville clearly outlines to his students what is going to be on the test, and if you use the study guide, you are going to do great. He is not looking to trick students. He can get off topic during the lectures, but he is very caring and acts like a dad.
Nice professor who obviously cares about the field and seems really knowledgable. Relatively easy, well organized, not really any surprises. The work/lectures can sometimes be a bit tedious but nothing big to complain about. Funny guy who wants his students to do well
Great prof and funny lectures! If you do the homework and readings, you should easily pass.
PSY 201 has been a great class with this professor. The way he lectures makes the material easier to understand and it is interesting. Questions are encouraged. Make sure you read the textbook! It's great reinforcement for learning and memory, and you'll have no stress as long as you keep up in the readings.
Paul is so funny! Psychology 201 was definitely my favorite class this term and I wish that I had him again for Psychology 202!! You do have to do a bit of studying on order to pass his tests; they're not hard if you know the terminology and neurological processes. 11/10 recommend.
Good guy, liked listening to him because he's pretty knowledgeable in his field. Only problem with the course is that because there's so many people little things distract you and its hard to focus on him, not his fault at all though.
Tough class to teach entirely through lecture. Was hard to pay attention. It is necessary to read the book to do well on the tests and homework assignments. I would suggest filling out each chapters study guide as you go because he does not condense study guides for midterms or finals and it is a lot of work to do quickly and all at once.
Paul is the best prof I've ever had at the uo. He's a total dad. When I took the class we used inquisitive which has the online version of the book on it. I never even opened the physical book nor did I use the online book so I would say just buy the service of inquisitive and your iclicker and yo good.
Funny at times.
I really liked his course! He does grade attendance by answering iClicker questions about course content (but not by accuracy). The homework is really easy and the exams are a lot like the homework, so as long as you do the homework and look at the extra questions he has on canvas for studying, you're good! And no one is usually at his office hours
Paul was very popular with students for 201. He's funny and very respectful to students asking questions and is extremely lenient with deadlines. The course can seem intimidating at times but his tests are very fair (easy as long as you memorize some general parts of the chapters). Barely any homework either - an easy an A as you're gonna find!
Only reason I went to lectures was for the iClicker questions but his lectures were pretty pointless -way too hard to sit still in them for 2 hrs & very unengaging; everything he covered was in the textbook too and you HAVE to read the textbook or you won't pass; he's nice but not very interesting; be ready to work outside of class; tests are hard.
Paul was an amazing teacher to have my first term of college! I had taken AP Psych in high school but even if I hadn't this class would've been a breeze. I know a lot of people who got B's or C's because they didn't study but if you put in the work it's easy to conquer. He's fun and accessible!
Paul is the real homie here at the UO. His dad jokes kept me from ending it all during his long lectures. The lectures kinda go on for too long for the content that is being presented but it's pretty chill. The homework is super easy it's basically nonexistent. The class kinda sucks because it's boring but Paul is a gem so I didn't mind.
He made long lectures enjoyable. Also gave some breaks
Paul is super down to earth and chill. There's 2 midterms and a final. If you show up to lecture, do the readings, and study you should be fine.
Second class I've taken with Paul Dassonville and he was great again. The material can be difficult (in PSY304) but he makes sure the tests are straightforward. Labs are really interesting and there is review in discussion before exams. Lectures are interesting and he takes his time to respond to all questions.
hands down my favorite teacher I have ever had at the university of oregon!! had him for both PSY 201 and PSY 304 but didnt realize how great he was until psy 304 which isnt an easy class necessarily but he made me apply myself and WANT to work hard.. he is so caring and genuinely wants his students to do well go to his office hours !!
Dassonville is a fine teacher. Pros: funny at times, entertaining lecture, fun class Cons: lots of reading, midterms and final are a solid 7/10 difficulty, long classes, and if you happen to get a concussion during his course, he will not grant you any extensions despite teaching a unit on brain injuries.
I never personally went to professor Dassonville for help in psych, but in class he was very kind and open to hearing questions from everyone. Honestly, this class is fairly easy if you study regularly (study by doing inquizitives over and over again and quizlets). The lectures can be boring at times, but attendance is required. Id recommend.
Paul is a great professor that is extremely intelligent. His class is quite long, but his lectures are very helpful. The material might not be the easiest, but certainly doable. Paul is great!
Dassonville was a great speaker and he described his lecture slides really well. He was not vague. He also brought in humor to his teaching, and he always made sure to make his slides available after class and have study guides for each chapter. I found that helpful because there was a lot of content. He wanted people to succeed.
The material itself was difficult and grade was 70% exams but studying a lot using flashcards with material from the lectures and online assignments made it way easier. There were 500 students so I did not speak to him but based on the classes, he seemed ready to help and very knowledgeable. He also tried to make it fun and the lectures were clear!
Super fun teacher, and a pretty normal difficulty class! I took his class during COVID, and he made sure everything was clear and that we had plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Very funny, and while class wasn't mandatory, it was still fun to participate. Exams were a big part of the grade, and we had a lab, a quiz, and discussion due weekly
very structured class and very clear on requirements. He was an awesome lecturer, kept lectures engaging and didn't go too fast. three tests are the majority of the grade, but detailed study guides were given and if you know what's on them you'll pass. very easy to get a hold of and awesome with individual help. passionate/excited about material
To do well in Dassonville's class it's important that you attend the lectures and read the material. The only real workload is the reading and the tests weren't terribly difficult. His lectures were always interesting and he always provided tons of resources for studying. I only wish there was more to be graded by in the class.
Paul is literally a fantastic teacher. He cares about his students and really wants to make the material interesting, so its always super funny and you just naturally pay attention. The class does have a lot of terminology to remember, and the lectures are dense with it, so be ready for some memorization.
Lectures are very long and tedious but they're not required to pass. Nice guy who explains things very well.
Very boring lectures. The content was interesting but he just read off of his slides. You never receive any feedback because you are in a class of like 500 kids. In this class you pretty much learn by yourself by reading your textbook. I really wish the lectures were more interesting because he seems like a nice guy.
Pretty boring and long lectures but I didn't mind. They were available on zoom so attendance not mandatory. The homework took me many hours and was a drag. I think he was a good professor, midterms were multiple choice and difficult but online. Have to participate in studies for credit, but they were easy. Start homework early in the week.
Paul is a really nice guy, but his lectures consist of reading off of slides that rarely have anything to do with the tests. Reading the textbook & taking notes will help you in this class. Also, because there is no homework, your grade depends on how well you do on quizzes/tests, so studying is essential- but hard bc of how vague lectures are.
The content and the way Dassonville delivered it was super interesting. He gave weekly quizzes which were tedious to plan for, and exams were more challenging than any questions he asked in class and required a lot of studying. That also might just be because the class content is difficult. He is very generous with extra credit, though! Up to 3%!
Paul has a lot of good reviews on here but to be honest he is super unapproachable at office hours. His tests for 201 are really hard and abstract compared to the 201 textbook. Im a biology major) one of his midterm questions was not accurate and when I brought kindly to his attention he was snappy and unwilling to budge. Not pleased with rudeness.
Test are extremely difficult, doesn't care about you as a human being when you are going through personal issues. Study guides don't help at all. Midterms/Finals weigh the most of your grade 25% and homework is 10%. Do not take his course if you like professors who actually care about their students and not the politics of college.
As long as you read the textbook & pay attention in class you will get a high B or an A. The test is a lot easier compared to the study guide. So as long as you know the definitions & review the lecture slides you will be fine. If you are on your phone during class, or decide to read the book one day before the exam, then you probably won't pass
boring, not very approachable. lectures use iclickers and are painfully long
long lectures, very strict about attendacne, so much reading, made me rethink my major because i hated this class so much. Nice guy tho.
If you read the book and show up to class you will pass. If you actually do the Inquizitives without using Quizlet then you will also pass. Anyone who disagrees just didn't do any of these things
Honestly, a pretty easy class if you do the work. The only issue is the content can be boring and he can be very long-winded so lectures are hard to sit through. He does at least try to engage with us during the lecture though, so he is definitely at least somewhat aware of how boring it gets sometimes.
Paul was a decent professor. He's a nice guy but the lectures were very boring and long. Lots of reading assigned each week and the InQuizitives/Zaps homework are tedious. He's a pretty good professor overall, but not the most entertaining.
I honestly was not a fan of this course/ professor. The lectures were very long and not engaging. along with this there are insane amounts of homework and readings. This course is mostly weighted on exams which are very specific to readings and specific info through the entire course. I wouldn't recommend this as a fun intro course opt for sociology
about 2 homework assignments due every sunday. you read 1 chapter a week. 2 midterms and 1 final. you also need research credits which were not as hard as it sounded. lectures can be long and many students fell asleep. as long as you spend the time to read and do hw you'll be fine. also you can miss up to 3 classes before your grade drops
Dassonville was not my favorite professor. His lectures (nearly 2 hours long) were, for the most part, incredibly dull and unengaging. He would occasionally toss gen z-appealing humor and other lighthearted commentaries here and there, but for the most part, his lectures consisted of clustered, text-heavy slides. Also poor at responding to emails.
The lectures are very long but were still engaging. I took AP Psych in high school so this class was very easy for me. Some of these reviews are being overly critical, if you do the reading, homework, and pay attention to the lectures then you will be prepared for the exams.
If you make any effort to stay up with the lectures you'll do okay
super friendly
Hw is super easy (takes effort to get below a B) tests are multiple choice with study guide. In-class i-clicker will bring you down like 4% if you never show up. That's basicly it. Keep in mine there's almost 350 pages worth of text book to read but if you review lectures and fallow study guides you don't have to ready any at all.
As a biology major, I found this class pretty easy, but I could see how challenging it would be for someone without a biology or neuroscience background. Extra credit was super helpful since there were only a few things we were graded on.
As long as you go to class and pay some attention, you will do well in his class. He is very personable and makes himself very accessible outside of class time, although not really needed as everything in lecture is very clear.
I liked this class, but you need to be prepared to dive into a lot of biology. Paul is a good professor but you might need to apply yourself a bit more outside of class if you're not bio savvy. I suck at biology so I had to spend a lot of time outside of class watching biology videos and rewatch lectures and rereading from the textbook.
Paul is a very caring & knowledgeable! The content is pretty biology-heavy and the exams required a lot of studying for me, but they were multiple choice and very doable. The lectures were often long and dull but informative. His slides were well-formatted and easy to follow. The Canvas page is well-organized and expectations & criteria are clear.
Prof. Dassonville cares about his students and genuinely wants them to succeed. This class is difficult, and there is a lot of material to cover, but if you put in the time to engage with the material outside of class, you can do well. Prof. Dassonville provides students with a wide range of study materials. Lectures can be long and boring.
