Frighteningly knowledeable, enthusiastic.
He's wonderful and a priviledge to learn from
Seriously intelligent and intriguing.
excellent proff, funny and intriging at the same time
One of the Best!!
Funny and intelligent makes a killer combo. Dutton is awesome.
awesome prof...very interesting
Enthusiasm about the material really helped to get into the course
Very lively lectures - never boring. Doesn't even need a mic for the biggest lecture halls!
TAKE HIS CLASSES! Best history prof in the school.
for the first time, I never missed a 9:30 am lecture, but his tutorials were not very helpful
When a professor is willing to dress up in a halloween outfit that relates to class material, that shows a lot of interest and inspires students. Great lectures. Like story time. I like story time. :)

hes an awesome prof.
Lots of Fun, not a lot of notes but the mid-term was rough. Tons of discussions and debates, really based on attendance and participation.
Great prof. Very organized and informed about his subject matter.
Nice selection of books for this class. He got some good discussions going. Somewhat picky marker on the weekly essays.
His clarity lies far beyond the average professor. Moreover, his knowledge of the subject matter is fantastic. This combination of teaching ability and knowledge is very hard to find. Hum. 201 was the first class I have ever truly enjoyed.
Has lively & informative classes. Loves to teach and is loves his area of research and it showed.
The guy dressed up for his lectures. How cool is that? I loved his enthusiasm. His classes were always organized and informative.
Clearly revels in the subject matter. A good teacher for a 100 level class. Recommended.
Not a great proff. He's somewhat arogant and reluctant to help.

Maybe the best lecturer I've ever had. Lecture was engaging and interesting, and he was ridiculously happy when you went to see him in office hours. Don't hesitate to take a class with him.
Have taken 3 courses total with Dutton. This man will get you into European and medieval history, whether you like it or not. Genuinely interesting and funny. However: hard marker. Have to pry quite a bit for effective help.
He taught one of my high school teachers too. This was the best prof i ever had. A highly enjoyable time for me
Awesome prof. interesting and you could tell he really cared about what he was teaching. he gets excited about weird stuff like papyrus, but that's part of his charm. take any class u can with him, great guy.
Great guy, great prof. Wish he was still in the History department, instead of Humanities, so that I could take more of his classes. Enthusiastic, super intelligent, makes you want to do well.
Enjoyable lectures due to his presented passion of history
I only sleep because it's an 8:30 class, really! But, seriously, I like him. He manages to sort through a lot of the excess stuff (crucial in history) and get to the point. He's also funny in an endearing, goofy way.
keep up with readings or ur gonna be screwed. I never did and i ended up scrambling for all my exams. Exams were marked pretty hard, so it's not an easy A.
great lecturer, very fun, tests were hard and needed very specific details but not hard to get a decent mark... I would recommend anyone to take his class... to bad hes retiring I think?
He is a great professor who really knows his stuff. His exams are tough but fair and he is the best lecturer in the school. A great guy to learn from!!!
Very good prof, very clear, informative, and interesting. Makes 8:30 lectures riveting. If you are interested in Hist, this is a great course and a great prof to take it with. I would take any course with him again.
He is an awesome prof! His passion for the material can be seen and makes the lecture that much more interesting. He totally makes going to an 8:30 lecture worth it.
Good prof.,good lectures.Exams:too specific for survey course (1st year),allows only 1 hr for 3 part exam, including an essay portion.Exams consist of 80% of grade, doesn't allow for student to demonstrate good comprehension. This course is quantity vs. quality.TAs lack knowledge of course material.
Awesome prof, his 8:30 lectures always had a comfortable atmosphere and were entertaining! His tests were very fair (he tells you exactly what to expect) and never asked any obscure or unfair questions, only tested the major stuff. Take his class!!!
Very passionate about what he teaches. Helpful if you approach him. However course material is almost overwhelming, there's so much to know and midterm/final questions require lots of detail.
Lectures are fun and full of great information.
Very amiable, above-average prof with an awesome lecture style. I've heard he's retiring which I hope isn't true. His 8:30 classes really didn't feel like 8:30 classes.
Fall04. My favourite history prof ever! About his specific exam questions - they're specific because he specifically gives out what he's going to be asking before the exam! I found his exams verrrrry fair and somewhat easy because he prepares the class so well for him. His lectures are a treat and you look forward to going to them, even at 8:30!
I took this class in Fall '04 (my first sem.) and it's still one of my favourite classes I've ever taken. He reminds me of a storyteller the way he structures his lectures - you just settle in to listen and all of a sudden an hour has passed! When I heard he'd be teaching again this semester I signed up right away. Take any class you can with him!
Definitely gives interesting lectures, is quite demanding as a tutorial leader (don't just DO the readings, write notes on them and analyze the information before you come). Exams don't seem difficult but his standards are extremely high. As a straight A student, I struggled to get an A-. But you will NEVER be bored. Great prof.
Excellent Professor, perhaps a bit too hard for a 1st year course, but he maps out exactly what he wants you to do. Don't skip the lectures and listen at home, its too hard to keep up and you miss pictures and terms central to the exams...Overall a great prof, even if he wants you to be as smart as he is.
AMAZING PROF! I went into this class thinking it would be another boring factual history lesson. But it turned out to be my best and most interesting class of all! His lecture style is like storytelling as someone already mentioned, he keeps me awake and before you know it the class is over. Go to class and take lots of notes, then you'll do fine.
Very passionate prof, but dont bother attending lecture unless you have an insane typing speed. Everything on the exam is from the lectures. Easy course if you do the work.
My favourite prof. Clear, interested, excellent lecturer. I took almost everything he taught.
Very engaging teaching style. He uses a variety of media to keep you engaged. Records lectures--an excellent supplement to tutorials. Very knowledgeable. Don't bother reading the text unless something from lecture is unclear, but primary sources are important. Great prof, good course.
He is a great prof. knows his stuff, apparently writing his own textbook.
Very good prof, so far as interest, knowledge, and interest level. But honestly, I have been in University for quite a while, and this is THE most information I've ever seen in a first year class in a Humanities discipline. Do not take this if you are in your first year, or not good at taking notes. The downloadable lectures are a nice touch.
Nice prof but this is probably the hardest course I've taken at SFU so far (this is my 4th semester). But I'm not a Hum major so I don't know what other Hum courses are like. Lecture is intense. A lot of information in a 50-min. lecture. Need to listen to lecture recording again at home.
He`s a nice and helpful prof, even voluntarily re-marked my midterm (because I failed it). Lectures and tutorials are a must! I probably would`ve done better in this course if I did the readings.. :P
Nice guy, gives feedback if you need it. His lectures are engaging and humourous. You WANT him as your tutorial leader because he actually makes you think without making you feel like an idiot. I saw him in the hall the other day - and he STILL remembers me! Oh, and he looks somewhat like John Cleese...just throwing it out there...=)
Awesome Prof! Lectures and tutorials are engaging.
Amazing, a true academic. Has his lectures fully memorized, goes thru them with perfect pace. I sat thru evry lect. mesmerized - he describes history as scenes in amazing books or movies, so much incredible detail. yes there's a lot 2 memrize but it's stuff i want 2 remember 4ever. i wrote notes with images, studied hard, and got an A-. fantastic.
This prof told us he had wanted to bring rats into the class during his lecture on the black plague, to bring out that eerie feeling of rats, but said it wasn't allowed in case they got out of the class. i found that hilarious though, and i loved watching the students squirm. some info is so funny - like midieval christian pole-livers! oh, i died.
Excellent prof and TA. Really knows his stuff and makes lectures interesting. Speaks a little fast for note taking, and with a lot of detail. Lots of memorization but the content is interesting. A lot of the exams were based on discussion in tutorial. Vaguely reminds me of Mr. Feeny from Boy Meets World.
GREAT Prof! His lectures are always interesting and make you want to do readings. Exams are fair, easy to do well on if you try & are lecture based. He's funny, finds a way to make everything interesting, super helpful and very approachable. I didn't have him for tutorials but be sure to try and get him for them! Definite recommendation.
He is a nice professor who is very knowledgeable and willing to help students. However, this class is not meant for non-history or english majors as an elective. Excellent professor, boring course. Will need a laptop to keep up with lectures, every five seconds is a new point.
Great Guy, Great Prof! Dutton is truly passionate about what he teaches and because he is so passionate he finds himself going off on tangents, nevertheless hes a great lecturer one of the best, only problem was his class was at 8:30am hard to listen for a two hour class, and his final wasnt the best, ill be taking another class with him for sure!
It's not an easy course! U have to memorize lots of names, places and stuff like that... U can not attend lectures because he posts lectures online, but take the outlines that he posts on the board because they are important for exam.Midterms are not easy but he is really good guy and interesting person. Tutorials are helpful and interesting as well.
Great prof! Knows the material, interesting lectures and tutorials. Not a GPA booster, averages in class for the midterms was around C and C+, so think about it before taking the class
His was my favorite course, but also the one I found most challenging. He's a great guy, really funny and he cares about his students. I'd definitely recommend him to students with a good work ethic.
The content for the class is rather interesting (rise of western civilization), however, this course is a tad on the challenging side. The midterms and finals required a lot of memorization, despite only being on select chapters for each. As well, the tests were all written. Not a GPA booster, but great prof who really makes class worth going to.
Great guy. I am only taking this class for B-Hum, but I ended up really liking it. Hard marker, but very consistent and has very engaging tutorials (led by himself for our class of 40, two tutorials, ~20 students each)
He is a very nice guy and really know his stuff, but this class is very very challenging. You are supposed to know all the names, dates, places and TA mark your exam very hard, the overall midterm avg is about C. Tons of work for a 3 credit 100 level course. Take it if you interested in history, DO NOT take it if you are an international student.
This was a pretty good class. I only took it as a B-hum requirement but the material was very interesting. It's definitely not an easy A, and you will need to make sure you do the readings before class to understand the lecture. Dutton is terrible with technology so there are no lecture slide but Dutton does record his lectures.
Really nice professor. Not the easiest course in the world but really interesting. Also he records his lectures which came in very helpful in studying for the midterms and finals.
His rich story telling made lectures a treat. The class was not the easiest but it was definitely one of the most rewarding. Do the readings and be prepared for essay style questions in the exams. He does give examples and ample preperation for them. A top notch prof! :)
Paul seems like a nice enough man, but he is the hardest marker I have yet to experience at SFU. In tutorials, he believed his opinion was the only right one, and would actually say to students "no, that's not right." A nice person but not a good prof. I wouldn't recommend this course.
This professor is all over the place. This is the most disorganized class I have ever taken in university. Lectures consist of one page of hand written, scribbled vocab and you are expected to follow along as he jumps from topic to topic with no consistency. He is EXTREMELY unhelpful and you have to fight to even get a chance to do an assignment.
An extremely easy prof if you just do the readings. Lectures are never boring and he is an excellent speaker. He's great as a tutorial leader as well, and very helpful if you need clarification on the material. He even booked a room for those who bombed the midterm for this semester, so he obviously cares for his students.
Paul Dutton is hands down, my favorite prof! His lectures are so interesting (although you go through a lot so bring a laptop). He tells the class ahead of time the format of the midterm, and is incredibly helpful. Just read the book and pay attention in tutorials are you'll be fine. Not a class for slackers but an awesome class! super interesting
One of the best profs. in Sfu. His lectures are interesting, but they are packed full of information. He is clearly so passionate about what he teaches and it shows. He provides ample help for students, and truly cares. The down side is he is a difficult marker and expects a lot. Not a GPA booster, but I'd defiantly recommend taking his class.
Nice enough fellow, but overall not a good teacher. Difficult to follow and an extremely, unnecessarily hard marker. I worked my butt off in this class and could never get an A in anything I handed in. He also gave very little reasoning for grades. Very frustrating. Lots of confusion with the textbooks as well...I recommend not taking this class.
Amazing Professor! You will not read any document the same once you have taken a class with him. He expects you to think (god forbid!). His classes are a real learning experience. Future courses seem way easier because he teaches you how to read critically. Long term, my grades improved a lot after taking classes with him.
Best prof I've ever had and this was an elective. He loves the material, the textbook is very good, and the lectures are interesting. He has a bit of a monotone voice, so if you're not into the material you may get bored, however, he has intermittent loud emphases on some words to keep you on your toes. Read the material, go to the final workshop.
I LOVE PAUL
Despite the difficulty of his grading and expectations, Paul is a great lecturer and tutorial leader. He is clearly interested in his topic and tries to inspire his students to like it too. He asks for the tough stuff - no memorizing, but analyzing, which is hard. MidtermsExams are the only graded assignments and are really tough. But gives rubric
He is an incredible prof. Take a class with him if you can. In another life he was a comedian and can teach the most boring topic but still keep you engaged, show him you are interested and you can do well.
Dutton is a great prof. Very knowledgable, and seems to care about his students. However, you have to pay attention in lecture since there are no power points or anything to help you if you miss the class. Textbook is very very useful as well. Midterms and final were all written, so know your stuff. If you study you will be fine.
Paul is a great lecturer. He is able to take boring topics and make them very interesting. He records his lectures in case you miss a class. He puts up vocabulary before every lecture that could appear on the exams. Although he is a tough grader his exams are fair. He cares about his students, and wants them to do well. Listen and you'll do well.
Really fun to listen to, very old fashioned professor - like. Hard but enjoyable class.
Here's the deal: Very very nice guy. Kind and open to students. He's a tough grader though. Had many marks deducted for legitimately made-up reasons. His reasoning was no one can get perfect in the arts, so you're destined to rarely get an A. No Canvas, no slides, nothing, so it's a bit weird to study. Take good notes I guess.
10-100 pages of reading HW each lecture. Some readings are verbose and hard to grasp (I had to write them in my own words) but I found it super interesting. I'd have hated it with any other prof, but Dr Dutton was super nice, friendly, and graded fairly. I envy how precisely he articulates his thoughts. Def taking future classes with him.
Great guys and really interesting class. Took his Carolingian Civilization class. Recommend!
As a guy he is perfect, really cares about you when you show up to office hours. I know we are in uni and that we should expect some hard tasks but his readings were very long to be quickly skimmed through in a 50 min lecture. His test is all about writing so get ready to write. A LOT! Tutorial attendance is mandatory.
He is a great teacher. Very interesting lectures. Really knows what he is talking about! Definitely would take again!
A really good teacher but you have to attend his class a lot of points depend on attendance and participation and the lectures help with the papers
