Don't take him, he is not a good teacher, he doesn't know most of what he was teaching. He is the worst patient any of us had ever have. He doesn't care if you learn anything in his class. Don't waste your money and time taking class from him. You will feel sorry at the end if you take class from him.
at least he's better at teaching than michille lebeau at century. he is very rude and don't like it when you are confuse and want to ask him something. I agree, take somebody other than dykes and lebeau.
paul dykes has no patient so don't bother asking too many questions or else he'll look at you like you're an idiot, he's not patient at all. take him if you only had the choice between him or michille lebeau, she's completely horrible at her teaching set up.
Possible to get an A? Of course. An F? You bet! The issue with Mr. Dykes involves clarity. On many occasions, his notes were either incorrect, or he changed his mind on what was going to be on the exam WITHOUT TELLING YOU. His exams are simply confusing and misleading. 4/5 of the class agreed this prof was utterly ridiculous.
This teacher does know his stuff. HOWEVER, when you are your lab partners ask questions he talks down to you or makes you affraid to ask questions... If you do read this Mr. Dykes.... just be patient with you students in LAB and Lecture
He is really hard to follow and he focuses more on setting you up for failure than for success.
Gets off on grading students low / and talking down to them. NO Extra credit / no wiggle room also in your grade / He seems to get nicer and more fair at grading towards the end / but it gets to late
Dr. Dykes lectures directly off of powerpoint slides which often have typos and inaccurate information. There is a 90% chance that if you do not understand what is written on the slide that his lecture will not elaborate enough to the point that you'll understand the material. Questions are not welcome, he seems to get annoyed at any interruption.
Proffesor Dykes is a real tough teacher. He expects all the students to know as much as he does. His tests are very difficult. Details, details, details. He expects the students to study everything for the tests, and his tests are hard.
A hard teacher, but if you work at it you can get a good grade. People I knew in this class that got less than an A either didn't do the work or missed so much class that there were too many in class assignments missed. He doesn't hand out A's left and right, but certainly gives them to people that work hard and understand the material.
This guy was an extremely hard teacher. Probably one of the most boring teachers that I have ever had. I attended every class and worked my hiney off and got a B. AVOID AT ALL COST This was a 3 credit class but he treats it like a 5 credit class.
Mr. Dykes has a very strict format for his class. The lectures require lots of note taking. He comes off as being strict but he is approachable and will gladly answer questions in lab/lecture/in class assignments. I missed an A by 2 points-he doesn't round up on grades. This class is challenging but was alot of fun. I give Mr. Dykes an A- to B+!
A+ teaching format both in lecture and lab. Very intelligent & strict teacher, but extremely helpful with students. Small in-class assignments and quizzes frequently, so strong attendance helps. Only difficulties - does not round up on grades & exams can be worded a bit tricky. Class is generally hard, so study everything!
Very structured class. No surprises. Be prepared to work for an A. Overall, I would take any class he teaches.
HARD - pointless, unhelpful assignments (endocrine map was very helpful). HARD - you must know everything. HARD class as is, he doesn't help it out very much. I am taking his class again because i now know how he teaches, but wish I had invested in a different prof. Take Carter if possible, she is a terrific teacher.
Fair instructor. Very "by the book". Very difficult exam questions that almost seem like they are designed to trick you are make you second guess yourself. Attendance is not mandatory, but to receive all available credit, make sure to attend all classes.
We didn't use the book at all, everything was based off his book. Test questions were very hard. Went through a lot very quickly. It is best to attend class everyday. Labs cannot be made up so don't miss labs. No extra credit points. No rounding up 89.6 is still a B. However, he is very helpful when needed and super nice. :)
Not much help if you had questions. Did not really teach in lab, your'e pretty much on your own.
Clear but tough.
Comes across as tough, but fair and willing to work with you to understand concepts.
Attendance is mandatory! Save your money didn't use the books, old editions ok. Notes-check spelling, and order of information given, may need to be rewritten to better understand material. NO MAKE UPS for labs/quizzes/exams!
Mr. Dykes is VERY intelligent, nice, and most important of all, organized! He explains everything well and detailed to help you understand. Aside from that, his tests are VERY hard! His questions are tricky and deals with a lot of critical thinking that could throw you off guard. He does NOT provide extra credit and will NOT allow make-ups or retak
Hard but clear. Must attend class otherwise you would not have any notes to study off on. Does not put his power points online, but does have a general outline as a guide. Lab quizzes are all fill in the blank as well as quizzes in class. Study notes everyday to prepare for ALL THE QUIZZES AND EXAMS. Exams are multiple choice, which is good.
I've taken Mr. Dykes for both Bio 2031 and Bio2032. As mentioned by many people, he is very specific and detailed. You could get a half point for not spelling a word the right way. He is also very timely... but allows class to leave early. If you really want to go into depth about anatomy and phys he's a great teacher to take.
Don't bother buying the book -never used it. However, Highly recommend buying lab book! His exams/quizzes hard as heck. don't recommend him as a teacher. Yes, he knows his stuff, but it doesn't feel he tests you on your knowledge learned - tests are for seeing how he can "trip" you. take class from someone else. Notes are not online - attend ever
Awful teacher! Full of himself, doesn't test on the book only HIS powerpoints. Lab tests were timed, not enough time for them. Assignments were way to complicated for the point value. Lecture tests were very difficult, tricky, and worded totally different than his presentation in class. No makeups,no flexibility, not helpful tries to confuse you.
He loves what he does and shows a lot of passion for science. He def. knows his stuff. However, his tests are very tricky and worded weird. Never used text book and didn't have much out of class work except for studying for tests. I highly recommend making flashcards out of all notes for success. Take time nd study before tests, you should do fine.
Very meticulous and extremely picky. Tests are VERY tricky. Very hard to follow his lectures. Not very approachable. Timed lab tests were also put together in a way that was confusing, especially when you only have ninety seconds to answer a question. Stay away from this guy!!!!!!!!!!
Very smart and knowledgeable teacher. He overcomplicates what he teaches and tests only on what he goes over in class (and lab). Book was usefull but not entirely neccessary. The old version is plenty good, don't waste your money on the new one. Very tricky and timed tests. Would not recommend this teacher if you have a choice...
You will either like him or hate him.loved him and followed his rules.come to class and do not miss any of his labs or lectures because there are no make ups.also gives you his power points and that is all you need to pass his class. Also know all his material word for word.Brings alot of the things you ignore in his exams and quizzes.
I'm sorry but his tests were ridiculously difficult. His tests are EXTREMELY detail oriented so make sure to read the chapters and review your notes continuously. If you have no friends, don't work and don't have children then this class is for you because you can then spend 10 hours studying per night. I'm only exaggerating A LITTLE bit. Beware.
he is absoluite in his rules.nothing can change him. sometime does allow you to make up missed lab IF there is another same class he teach. no need book. MAKE SURE STUDY EVERY SINGLE WORD IN HIS POWER POINT cuz his test very detail on it. NO EXTRA CREDIT. grade: 60% on test (both lecture and lab)-40% activity and every day lab.dont miss easy point
Very Hard class but very informative! Be there because he does not do make-ups but otherwise awesome teacher. Always in his office and willing to answer questions. I would definately recommend him but warn you to study hard!!!!
I was very nervous starting this class. A&P is a tough subject, but he makes it clear with his lecture. Make sure to take notes, the book isn't necessary. He goes over everything you need. Study hard!! He is very helpful, though.
Tough tests!! There's no doubt he knows his stuff, but it seemed that he tries to prove it by making the tests really tough. The labs were ok, but labs usually are. I'm typically an A student and studied quite a bit for his class, but still struggled to get a B-. I would take another prof if you could.
Study, study for the exams, quizzes and labs! He's very helpful and will take the time to explain if you don't understand something. This class will take a lot of hours of studying so make sure to have those extra hours for studying!
Study. Study. Study. Even after doing so, his exams are still hard. If you decide to take this course with him, it should be the class that you spend the most time in.
to succeed in this class you need to take a good lecture note and record his lecture. He doesn't really use his textbook. whatever he says in class will be on the test. Don't even miss a word from it.
Knows what he's talking about. Very detailed and uses powerpoints for his lectures which for me is a PLUS! Tests are really hard and sometimes not all questions comes from notes, a lot comes from little side talks. Does unannounced in class assignments which can't be made up...good teacher but hard class so STUDY STUDY STUDY is all you'll do.
Class was tough, I was able to get an A but I only took this class and Microbiology during the semester. Tricky with wording, and you NEED to have every word memorized from the powerpoints to do well on any quizes or tests.
What a wonderful teacher. If you study all of your notes and spend a lot of time studying, you will do well. He is willing to help if you have questions. He is a very nice guy and knows what he is talking about!
He is really good at explaining things if you ask him a question and all the tests and quizzes are from his lectures so you just have to write down all his notes from the power points and study those and you will be set. The class was a bit difficult but if you study the notes you'll be fine. Everything is really organized from the start of class!
Probably the most difficult BIOL class I've taken. The quizzes/exams are tricky and hard so make sure you study all the time for this class. In class assignments can't be made up so it's important to attend every lecture. I would NOT recommend this class.
Mr. Dykes is a real nice guy. He truly has a passion for what he teaches and wants the students to learn as well. I never once used my book because all his notes are on a powerpoint and he doesn't put any information from the book into the test. You NEED to work and study if you want an A. He is strict but means well. SHOW UP AND STUDY FOR SURE!!
Professor Dykes was a great instructor. His exams are really hard but as long as you study, you should be fine. Very knowledgeable person, very helpful, and wants everyone to succeed.
Professor Dyke's lectures were a drag, and to be honest, he didn't strike me as someone who knew the material very well. The lecture exams are entirely based off of his lecture slides. Every single word on the ppt slides should be memorized. If you can do that, your tests should come close to 100%. Lab exams can be difficult and ambiguous.
I would never recommend his class. He kept picking on every single little detail to take your point off. There were no highlight content for each chapter. Studying in his notes is not sufficient enough. To get an A on his class, you really need to read through every single page in the textbook AND need to look up for more information from website.
He taught the class material but his tests and quizzes are supper hard. He timed on lab exam, which is not necessary. He is not very helpful if you ask him questions.
I regret taking this class because I never knew the professor was like this. I really wished I had a different professor to teach me about a&p2. I don't like his class at all. His teachings is just straight up talk, throws papers at you & let's you do all the work just to know everything. I don't like his style of TEACHING at all!
I took Bio 1024 to add to my biology classes for my major. I took the night one since I work full time. Not only were the lectures boring, there was very little said that I wouldn't have gotten if I didn't go to class. I was always afraid to ask questions. The bio class I am in now some stuff overlaps and its like I'm learning it from scratch..
This class was extremely difficult. You literally have to memorize everything from the lecture power points, and some of the little side notes that he says verbally-- WRITE IT DOWN. The online assignments were all 15 points but the last two were 25-30 questions-still worth 15 points. He's not very approachable either. Would not recommend.
One of the best teachers I've ever had at Century College! He made learning about Anatomy and physiology so much fun! Lecture was printed out and you filled in the blanks, tests were straight from your notes and labs were to the point on what you were going to be tested on. I wish he was teaching A&P II so I could have him again. Take his class!!!!
If you show up you will pass. It's a lot of studying and notes but that's really it. Tests are really hard although they are multiple choice. It's like A,B,C,D, or all the above kind of thing. Random attendance checks with in class activity's and labs are worth a lot so show up!
This instructor is one of the toughest one here in Century College. I would suggest that find another instructor with an open mind and more approachable character because Paul is not an instructor who inspired his students instead he turns all their hopes and hard work from his students giving feedback on D2L things such, "NO enough details"
He only tests on the power point and things he says verbally in class, talks way too fast. It's: "Here's the info, do whatever you want with it, you're on your own." He's very condescending to his students. Takes points off for a few misplaced letters and acts like it could have been an entire different term that you were talking about. AVOID!!
I've taken Paul's class for both A&P 1 and 2. He's a great lecturer, although the lectures are literally off the powerpoint slides. If you miss class u don't get the notes for the powerpoint slide, which is where the lecture exam and quizzes are based. Follow the syllabus and use the lab packet sites for histology. What u put in is what you get out
took this class my first semester with Mr Dykes, received a 79.25% as my final grade. Asked him if there was anything i could do to get up to 80%... he said NO:(
Paul Dykes is a very nice teacher. He's willing to help you out if you don't understand something. Just make sure to never miss a class day because all of his test is base off from his lecture and powerpoint. His tests are really hard and tricky, but his other assigments he gives out will balance out your bad test scores.
Mr. Dykes is a great teacher. He teaches completely from material he gives you. All lecture exams/quiz are directly from the class power points. Plus, a study guide. He also gives you a complete list of every thing that would be on your lab exams, (down to things such as the complete muscle name). Basically, if you didn't pass - you didn't try.
If you need to be coddled, you won't do well with Mr. Dykes. Be prepared to spend a lot of time learning the material on your own outside of class. Tough grader, but consistent once you figure out what he's looking for. Tests and quizzes are tough but you can make up for bad grades in the lab. Don't skip class or lab.
I had him for AP 1. He is a little eccentric but has a good heart. He cares about your success when you ask for help he is there genuinely. Grading was tough. He is very wordy with his exams and in class work assignments. Kind of confusing to understand what he wants exactly. Tough grader. Sticks to the point, gives good examples.
I had him for A and P 1. He's not that difficult of a professor, it's simply that there is a lot of information you need to know - memorization. Lecture exams were all multiple choice and not that bad. Lab exam were the hard part - no terms list, so you need to memorize everything. I found quizlet flashcards to be the most helpful for lab exams.
He's one of the hardest professors I have ever had. Lectures are note taking the entire time from a power point. He's a very hard grader. Lecture exams are okay if you study, lab exams are pretty difficult. He's extremely smart and knows what he's talking about however he expects you to know as well.
Honest review on the class. It was a summer session which is shorter and much harder to really learn. There were no lectures online, was left to fend for our own learning. His teaching style was here is the power point, you fill in your own definitions. Tests come right from power point, quiz so study what he gives you. Lots of reading on your own.
Hands down one of the worst professors Ive had. If you want to pass, Khan academy and crash course are <3; the textbook is good too. His exams multiple choice is trash; wording isnt clear (many answers can apply). I was excited for lab, but it was a joke; we did 1/2 labs and the rest involved reading packets. If you can choose a diff prof.
The type of professor that makes you feel stupid for asking questions. VERY lecture heavy, and he doesn't post the entire lecture powerpoint online. Tests are difficult, so a lot of studying is necessary. A lot of people in my class withdrew because of the difficulty. I also didn't like the style of his teaching.
Friendly, approachable, gives interesting lectures. In-class work is graded on participation. He seems enthusiastic about his topic and explains things clearly. Pretty much no homework. If you come to class/lab, pay attention, and do the work you are likely to get a good grade.
Do not take this professor class, he was very awful to me as a student & I hated that I even wasted my time. The course was helpful but he wasn't a good person I strongly believe that. I will never take him again as a professor, he does not care whatsoever, please be advised that this rating is not a joke but truthful & you should listen.
don't take this class, he is not understanding at all. looking at the other reviews is good because he is NOT GOOD. his exams are poorly written and you won't be able to understand them and everything else he gave us like the worksheets were all just busy work. if I were you I would get a new teacher.
This was my hardest course I ever took! I almost did bad on all of my quizzes except for a few, but I feel like he knows that the course is hard that why he gives out a lot of HW. The HW is hard too, but he does grade them by participation & not by right or wrong. He doesn't ask easy questions, but questions that make you really think.
He's enthusiastic about biology. He will always answer questions. If you are really stuck, he will help you find the correct answer. Read the textbook before lab.
A lot of reading. However, I took the 8wk online course and so it is pretty much self taught. Chapter reviews took way longer then the exams! A lot of points to balance out your final grade but definitely took way too much effort to get some of those points. I would highly recommend he use alt textbook source like open stacks.
While he is overall a very nice teacher, he can definitely make you feel stupid at times. When asking him questions throughout the semester, he had a few where he sounded very patronizing towards me. This is a very difficult class for such a basic biology course. He will not give very much room to breathe, but that makes you much more proficient.
Really great instructor. I hate Biology but this instructor is kind and caring - does reach out to ensure you finish your required work to pass the course. Read the book prior to labs, gives you the questions and what you need to know for exams. Gives specific instructions, follow along to get an easy A. Would take again for a different class.
He was a great teacher. I had a small class room size. We had to show up ever other tuesday cause or groups routated from group A and group B. Our time during school would be a small lecture then a 3 pages packet lab he would give us the whole hour to do then you can leave once your done. Great teacher just make sure to do Online HW
lab exams are completely ridiculous, not the content covered through the assignments, the diagrams are hard to see, can barely read numbers ,he is very accommodating when you have disabilities but only when you copy accommodations to the email otherwise not very accommodating, i think he's an amazing person but never taking his classes again
This is a wonderful instructor to have. I remember during a lab on mitosis, he was quizzing my group of four on the process of mitosis. One of my classmates in my group couldn't understand metaphase, and instead of him just giving up and deducting points he stood there for 10 minutes helping her understand the material until she understood. Amazing
This microbiology class is actually a lot better than the other one not to mention it feels more flexible
This professor is actually easier for biol2035 compared to other professors, you do have to teach yourself but as long as you can get a week or two ahead its relatively easy , reading is necessary but i would also suggest doing your own research because not all the powerpoints, textbooks have all the info
YOU MUST SHOW UP TO CLASS TO PASS. I took it in the morning and missed a couple of lectures and almost failed. Not too bad of a class and is very clear about homework and things like that, but if you don't show up, you will fail.
Took online Bio.1020. clear grading criteria. LOTS of stuff to complete each week. Tests are a bit tricky. This class definitely made me learn biology. Would not recommend taking with other heavy workload classes. You must try for a good grade in his class.
This was the second class I have had this professor for. There is quite a bit of homework, but for the most part it is interesting stuff to learn. Tests can pull from a variety of sources, making it harder to study for exams. Overall decent professor, could do better than him, but could also do much worse.
Don't recommend this course. Very disorganized. He doesn't give enough details, sometimes it sounds like he is going off topic. The assignments are not very clear. One assignment said "describe" and some students wrote a sentence describing it. But he said he only wanted a "LIST". You will have to email for clarification.
(this was a hybrid course) There is a quiz after every in class day and assignments are due Wednesdays and Sundays. Being late was not well received so if taking this course be on time! study before classes and use science tutors if possible. Personally, not my favorite class but if you have more of a liking towards science you may like this class!
Accepts no late work, barely lectures, so much textbook reading. Be prepared to read 2-3 chapters a week and answer 80-180 questions about each chapter. He gives you labs based on your readings the day after he assigns the reading. If you aren't working ahead you'll be lost, frustrated, and questioning why you took the course.
Nice person, but a harsh instructor. If you're not at least a week ahead of class you'll fall behind quickly. A lot of homework, 2-3 chapters and multiple quizzes a week. Good and fun labs. Answers e-mails regularly and quickly. Wont accept late work. A lot of reading and homework. Actually really fun in labs, nice to be around. GIves good feedback
Worst teacher I've ever had. Soooo boring. I love biology… he made me hate it. Reminds me of some of my high school teachers. I hope you read this before you take his class and choose someone else
I'd take genetics with someone else. He's nice, and his online labs are cool- very unique and interesting. He's unclear in his directions, will always penalize for late work no matter what the circumstances, and he's brutal at grading, will knock off 10% for one wrong word. Enjoyed the material, but holy smokes it's a lot of work and exams.
