awesome prof, really funny. He's pretty easy at marking, just know your stuff, and if you put in effort, he'll give you a good mark:)
I had him for Introduction to Business and although the course was very dry and boring he did try to make it more interesting. He is very nice and funny and his evaluations are fairly easy!
He is a nice prof but we tend not to use the textbook but he gives us powerpoint instead and he explains very well
It was an absolute joy both attending and being in his class. He is a very good teacher. He is a light-marker and evaluates very fairly. It is very easy to start a conversation with him and relates to students very well.
Horrible professor. Very disorganized & doesn't do a great job of explaining course material. Will always grade according to his restriction on class averages. If you can avoid him, do it at all costs!
Excellent.
A good Proffessor he makes the effort to learn everyones names in the class. Also does not drag on lectures, and are often dismissed early. I would definetly take him again.
BEST PROF EVER! really cares for students and is very funny. honestly made me feel like learning although the material was a little dry
Choosing him again in the future. Great prof, cracks jokes several times in one lecture. Keeps things interesting, teaches well. He helped my group a lot for our group project. Tests are very fair.
Paul is engaging and has a great sense of humour. He uses slides, teaches well, and his tests are fair (mc). However, his final project expectations were a little unclear due to a poorly designed rubric. His grading philosophy is lousy, which is marking close to the class average even if you've produced a quality report + presentation.
He was a nice professor. Class material was very dense and there was a lot to learn. Used powerpoint slides. Got to know students using name cards. Tests were fair. Final Project was long and expectations somewhat unclear. Overall, good professor.
he is a good prof he graded everyone fairly especially with participation marks awesome prof!
Best experience I've had in a course
Horrible professor. Does not make clear the expectations and does not explain the material. Really hard marker.
Paul is the best choice for Marketing class. His great sense of humour makes you look forward to attending his lectures and he spends a lot of time helping students outside of class. He is the kind of prof that will get to know you and spend extra time with you to make sure you understand everything fully.
HANDS DOWN BEST PROF AT Guelph-Humber. be ready to laugh learn and have fun in his class. if you talk to him about your projects he will help you the whole way and guide you to A. only prof I've meet that will stay late at school to help students with their projects. test are hard if you don't come to class, come to class & read u'll be good.
Paul turned out to be my favourite prof this semester. Such a nice guy and so funny. Course content can get a little tough but you can always go to his office and he'll take as long as it takes to help guide you. On presentation days, you get graded for audience participation, otherwise attendance is optional (but helpful). I 100% recommend Paul!
He's an easy prof! makes the class more interesting. Marks easy on written stuff but presentations he's a bit tough. If you have a chance to take this prof take him!
best marketing prof at gh. sense of humor and supports students with great feedback on case studies.
He is an entertaining professor and I would take him again but sometimes he gets lost in his own world and doesn't explain things clearly.
Paul is literally the greatest person alive, and teaches better than the Pope. He is also funny, and keeps your attention better than an attractive person at a bar.
Paul has a great personality. He's easy going, sometimes can get off topic during lectures. Do your readings, read his PPTs and you'll be fine.
Paul isn't the best professor when it comes to explaining what is required of students to do on assignments. All he does is go over the powerpoint which anybody can do. You'd be fine on skipping his class and sticking to your textbook instead. Don't recommend taking a course tough by him.
Had him 4 times! Most profs at GH just use the textbook provided powerpoint presentations and exams. Paul doesn't, he makes his own tests/quizzes to make sure what we learned is what is tested on. You can miss class, but I wouldn't advise it. He gives tips and advice in class, plus it's fun! He's scatter brained but ask and he'll actually help you.
Good prof. He's quite the character. I liked him as a person, however he was very unorganized and unclear when it came to assignments & tests. He uses a lot of examples in class which show up on exams. His exams seem easy until you get your mark back? He writes his own exams & there's a lot of spelling/grammatical errors.
He is such a funny prof, however, he gets off topic SO much which leads in rushing the chapters. He is an easy marker in general, his midterms are little hard. The annoying thing about him is that he is always busy outside class, there is always someone at his office, so better take an appointment. Once again he rushes in covering the material
Is there anyone that dislikes Paul? I take his classes at every opportunity I get. Some people say you don't need to go to his lectures to pass, but I go because he's SO funny. He's a great professor though and will take time with you to figure things out and tweak your assignments for the best mark.
Paul is very funny and easy going. I find him to favour some students and not pay attention to others. Also his outlines of what he wants in projects are extremely vague and often didn't answer my emails about project outline clarification which I didn't like. Easy classes though, not course heavy.
He'e engaging in the classroom but doesn't go over much material. This wouldn't be bad if the textbooks were useful but ours wasn't. I walked out of class feeling like I hadn't learned any material but I learned about his weekend. His exams were harder than expected.
Paul's classes were entertaining but he was really disorganized in regards to assignments. Constantly changing requirements and deadlines. All were group projects. He marks papers/presentations very specifically/tough. His multiple choice are not easy either. He grades on a curve too. You have to "think like Paul."
Love Paul. Hilarious guy and genuinely cares about his students. He isn't stuck up and you can tell he just wants everyone to have a good time and do well in his class. He makes instructions clear and if you ever need to see him outside of class he is more than willing to sit down with you and explain things.
He goes on these long rants during class that have nothing to do with the textbook. Then the exam will be based on those rants. He's non-serious and a tough grader.
Paul is a decent prof for first-years. He's funny and good at making students comfortable, which helps with the transition to uni. But after three classes with him, I've realized he just isn't very good at his job. He's lazy, doesn't update his grading criteria, and simply reads off of the publisher's slides in class. Terrible effort this semester!
In all honesty, Paul is a great proff. At first I though of him differently but once you actually talk to him about any issues you're having in class, he's more than happy to help you out. He is pretty clear about what he requires from his students in terms of assignments; follow that and you'll be good. One of my fav profs at GH !!
Paul is the kind of prof that likes to make jokes, hell he even puts jokes on final exams because why not. The kind of prof to enjoy a good beer with while talking smack about bad beer *cough budweiser cough*
Paul truly cares about the success of his students. He will even talk on the phone outside office hours to help with assignments. He is also very approachable and will give very helpful suggestions. He actually cares about his students doing well and is willing to put more effort in to see this happen.
Had him for marketing, CB and advertising. Curricular wise, he's not that great but he has a great personality. Probably that's why I took him 3 times. Group projects are his thing and he writes his own exams. He says there will be short answers but no, all MC so don't panic. He gets super off topic, so when he rants, document his rants.
Guy is hilarious and makes jokes. Loves application, the whole "how does this affect the real world" question. Says hes gonna write his own CB textbook with less concepts and more application. Test is "homegrown" which means he writes it so theres grammar errors but the test itself isnt hard. Also you do a couple presentations+final paper
funniest guy ever!!! makes me laugh so hard. Go to his lectures just for a smile. Tests are hard but just really pay attention to his lectures and note key info down. You will have a blast with Paul!
His class is fun but when it comes down to its a mess. His teaching style is unique because he mostly rambles alot off of the one or two sentences in his slides, which almost always end up on his REALLY hard exams. His website is super disorganized and nowhere near a good student resource. Aim to be one of his favourites, it'll pay off in the end.
Paul is amazing, I wish I could take him for all my courses. He is a great prof, he does not use test banks which I like.
Paul is an amazing professor who you can approach to about any issues school and non-school related discussions. Funny guy who makes class very entertaining!
So unorganized and never helps out with midterms and exams. There is no point in asking him help for assignments because he doesnt explain anything and takes him days to respond to emails
Paul is the best instructor at Guelph-Humber, he sometimes does go off-topic in his stories but those stories is what keeps the lectures engaging. I have had Paul for 5 courses thus far and can't wait to have him a few more times before graduating. He really challenges students to maximize learning. His jokes can be bad but we all make bad jokes.
He is a good prof.
Paul is one of the best profs from Guelph Humber. He always keeps his lectures interesting as he tries to engage all students in the discussion.
He is a great instructor but sometimes goes on some inappropriate rants in class which in no way can relate back to the lecture. Paul must recognize when he goes on the rants he is 25 years the students senior and keep everything professional. If you go to his office for help during office hours, keepn the door open. I have had Paul twice now.
Is an amazing guy, if you talk to him after class to seek clarity on projects & do not walk-in mid-lecture then he will like you. At no other school, would one have a prof like him. He is not great with emails, it is hit/miss if he responds but he always picks up his phone which is great. He made my university experience. Will never forget Paul.
I took Paul in my other years because I knew he was cool and would mark easy, but this year he got oddly specific and I felt like there was no way his expectations could be met. He was not specific at the start of the term, now all of a sudden he gets specific when we hand final assignments in, esp during this pandemic I thought he would he nicer.
I had Paul before and I liked him but once I had him in third-year, I changed my entire perspective on him. I would hands down take him again. I recomend him to all.
Paul is a super nice guy and a lot of people like him because he makes them laugh and doesn't really talk about the material he needs to cover but some random stories about his life (his mother in law and his dog food brand specifically). His lectures are very useless and when he starts teaching you will think that the slides and lecture notes.....
..... are enough until write your first midterm. The tests are super hard and even if you learn everything that is mentioned during the class you can get a 60 max. The textbook is really your best friend and you should start reading it. For the group projects make sure to talk to run ideas by him cuz if he doesn't agree he will make fun of you.
Some don't like Paul and this is because they don't try and don't talk to him for feedback. Those who are not his fans come late for class and leave as it ends. Paul gives his cell # out as he wants students to call and text when they are confused and need clarity. If you aren't going to try in his class then don't take Paul as he will hate you.
Instructor Finlayson is a great instructor. With COVID-19, it is hard to do school from home but he makes it smooth and easy. Always accessible via email and is an outstanding lecturer. I am glad I took him for this course.
Paul is the best Prof you can get, although he does not teach in his live session as of the pandemic, his recorded lecture is still informational. Paul truly cares about the success of his students. He gives his cell number out as he wants students to call and text when they are confused and need clarity. I would hands down take him again.
I really enjoyed Paul's marketing class. He cares about his students, gives great feedback, and he does a great job of making his zoom office hours enjoyable and worth the time.
Paul is another amazing professor. he does live meetings every week to check in with students and he really cares about his students success. he answers emails asap and is very accessible. made my online learning experience not as bad. he's also very humorous and made office hours fun and worthwhile. would definitely take again.
He cares about student success. He checks in on students each week and is open to answer questions students have or going over the material. He is also available through phone or email to answer questions and is prompt with his replies. Paul is a pretty funny person who made the class all the more enjoyable and didn't make it feel stressful.
Pretty solid professor, marks hard on tests. Do the mindtap assignments as they are a mark booster! His lectures are pretty straightforward, and he has a good attitude overall towards students. You will need to work hard to get an 80 in his marketing course.
Just being honest, there should be more professors like this. The class wasnt easy and I didnt get the highest mark, but it was fun to take his class. I took his class online, but he still tried to communicate with all the students. A lot of real-life examples helped me understand the concepts and he tested students using what he said in class.
Paul is the most unorganized and egotistical profs. He prides himself in not using test banks by making up his own questions. His instructions for assignments are vague yet he is a ridiculously hard marker. A marketing-based course should not be that difficult... the class average for the Midterm was 61%. Avoid at all costs.
Was super vague when explaining the final presentation which is worth 40%. He gave his number then told everyone to stop contacting him because he explained it "very clearly". Why would everyone be asking him questions if he explained it clearly? Also likes to threaten the class a lot. Midterm avg was 60% which was higher than last year suprisingly
Paul is a really helpful professor, provided a lot of good feedback that helped me do well in the course. He makes sure to communicate with students and help them outside of class with any questions or concerns.
Do not take Paul for any courses. The Mid-Term and final exam will be pretty hard, lot of concepts which are not even covered in the class or textbook. Questions are hard and have complex vocabulary making it hard to get the right answers. Questions are not conceptual based as they should be, he is the WORST professor. Choose some other professor!
WORST PROFESSOR, DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Please just take another prof if you want a half decent mark. This guy does not know how to teach and is lost 90% of the class. He cant even explain assignments properly. He explains the assignment like a riddle. I dont think he tries to do it on purpose, just how he explains everything. Just take another prof.
weekly quizzes and assignments, but they're easy. Most of the exam is from things said in class so show up and pay attention. the exam was open book and not too hard, he's very chill and understanding, assignments were all easy, he marked at reasonable times.
EVERYONE RATING HIM 5 STARS ONLY TOOK HIM IN THE FIRST OR SECOND YEAR. HE HAS CHANGED AND GIVEN UP ON TEACHING EVER SINCE THE PANDEMIC. NO LIFE TEACHER WHO WANTS TO ACT COOL. IF YOU ARE NOT A GIRL TAKING HIS COURSE EXPECT TO GET 10% LESS. THE WORST TEACHER IS UNWILLING TO HELP YOU. PREFERS TEXT!!!! OVER EMAIL, SAYS A LOT.
Teaches from a real world perspective, not just mindlessly getting students to answer questions that have been taken from the textbook like most of the other profs. Projects are applied and relevant. Students have got job offers based on the strength of their project work out of this class.
If you listen and try and understand big picture issues you might actually learn something. If you want to just listen to someone read powerpoints and give exams compiled from online test banks that half the class has found online he isn't the one for you.
Used his own material that was actually pretty good, not to mention cheap to buy. Read his material, he tests straight out of it and his tests come often word for word from lectures
Final project was a lot of work but he helped us it it went very well
Best prof in the school
Paul Finlayson is one of the best profs I ever had. His classes are engaging, never boring, with emotional intelligence which helps students for their careers and beyond. He encourages in-class participation, doesn't show favoritism. He gives grades based on quality of work. We get grades lower than we expect because his std of expectation is high.
I've never seen any prof this caring, and friendly to his students. He doesn't favor girls in terms of grades. He helps everyone in class irrespective of gender unless and until you are willing to put in effort in whatever you do. He has always been an inspiration in my life. I wish I could take more courses from him. But I'm not lucky enough.
Paul is a nice guy. However, it's also hard to achieve an 80 in the class. I wouldn't say I like his exam questions being so subjective. During presentations, he calls you out when he does not like the way you present so it's hard to go above his expectations for assignments. Overall he pretty much makes the class harder than it needs to be.
The lectures are fun but he is very hard with the marks.
Paul is a good professor. This course isn't hard You need to put in as much effort as possible, and you'll be fine. If you come to class, he gives out MC questions that will be on the exam. One time he gave everyone an extra 1% mark boost to everyone's final grade just for attending. His stories are funny, and he persuaded me to major in marketing!
Honestly Paul is one of the best professors at Guelph-Humber. Unlike many profs who ignore their students and read off the powerpoints, Paul actually takes the time to engage with the class which actually helps you grasp onto the information more than just reading material off a powerpoint and being bored to death. Take him if you can!
Best person / no match
Very thorough and thoughtful classes.
Worst prof ever
Great professor, he genuinely cares about his students and crafts a curriculum that is worth learning.
He's a nice guy I don't think he means any wrong. But he is a bit off, he seems to not understand current events while saying he does, he makes edgy comments like about race, he criticizes resources he assigns, he isnt clear what he wants in assignments, he cares more about class presentations than lectures (hes sped through 2 lessons in 10 min)
Amazing, honest and highly recommended
Amazing professor, classes were great, I learned a lot.
Paul is the man.
Inspirational, super intelligent, ethical and kind - a pleasure to learn from
Still think about this prof from first year!! he was so funny and made class enjoyable
I remember this prof from my first few years at Guelph-Humber and he was so amazing. Loved his cynical sense of humor. He was open to having conversations regarding 'controversial topics' like politics which I found very refreshing coming from a University professor, who typically have to be very careful with what they say and their own opinions.
