Tough courses, but you learn a lot and he is always available for questions and to offer help
The biggest dork, but really sweet and good at explaining things
Adorable, if not for his love of chemistry then for the bow ties he wears every friday!
blech, so annoying. he acts like his students are in kindergarten. no respect for their intelligence. and bow ties everyday? cute...if you're over 80
One of the best profs at Mac. Paul is smart, loves teaching, very helpful and accessible (he's always in his office and glad to see you), and can make very difficult concepts make sense. I was bad at and terrified of chem before his class. It was really hard, but renewed my confidence. I <3 Paul!
Professor Fischer is a womderful teacher. Honestly, he's always willing to help you with a problem that you're having, whether it's on the homework or it's a personal problem. He doesn't have much sartorial sense, but makes up for it with brightly colored shirts and bowties.
Best professor I've had here. Clear, and the fairest tests i've taken. Hard but clear. Also, lived in his office for most of the course--very easy to find and ask questions of.
He didn't explain anything he wanted us to do and I had to learn out of the book because he didnt understand anything and that just made me not want to take the class the first semester
AMAZING. One of the best profs at mac. Puts a ton of thought into lectures and extremely accessible and helpful outside or class.
It's not that he's hard as a professor, but a chemistry intro class is difficult in general. Fischer does a great job of explaining chem. in his lectures and is always available for questions. Some perks of his class include the experiments he demonstrates in lecture, his out-there emails, and of course his assortment of multi-colored bow ties.
A somewhat anal grader (especially with labs, which are more than three hours!), but always friendly and helpful whenever I wanted a word with him.
He is a great great teacher! i love him so much! he is so great and now he is my advisor!! love it!! you learn soo much!
One of the best professors I've had so far. I love his bowties!! His passion and dedication to chemistry and teaching are inspiring. He relates chemistry to everyday use and I love the little experiments he does during class! (like emptying the fire extinguisher)
I had taken chemistry 111/112 with him. It would be hard to see a professor more dedicated than him. Even though he's been teaching for more than ten years, he still prepares at least an hour for every lecture. Crystal clear lectures, just follow his lectures and you'll do great on exams. Extremely fair grading. Best prof for asking questions.
Very good professor. Has a passion for chemistry. Make sure to take extensive notes on his lectures.
I took Chem 111-112 with him, and could not have had a better prof. Very clear lectures, hard but fair tests, and always helpful during office hours (held before every exam!), after class, or during appointments. He made me consider a chem major, even though I came in with no such interest, through his passion for chemistry and skill as a teacher.
Paul is a great professor. He loves chemistry and teaching and was always there for me if I had a question about something. If you're looking for an easy A, don't take his class, but if you want to walk away from it with a deep understanding of chemistry he is your man. Great lectures and difficult tests that you really need to prep for, but fair.
Wonderful professor. Incredibly clear lectures and so helpful outside class. His tests are tough but definitely manageable if you take the time to study. I recommend taking a chem class with him!
He had homework due every single class, and so if you did not do it the night it was assigned, you had to rush to do it the night before it was due. I really don't think I learned much in that class at all.
He definitely knows what he's talking about. It can be very difficult to follow complex ideas/concepts in class because it all makes so much sense to him that it is often hard for him to explain it in terms that are comprehensible by non-scientifically minded students. His tests are very conceptually based. He's willing to help if you seek him out.
Paul is a wonderful professor. Lectures were well planned out, funny, and always interesting, he's extremely helpful outside of class and always willing to go out of his way to help, and he's incredibly enthusiastic about chemistry. Tests were hard, but fair and totally doable if you studied. Great professor, highly recommended.
Paul is the best professor I've had so far at Mac. He is a wonderful lecturer, is very accessible and explains everything crystal clear. Even if its an 8:30 class, I've never missed any of them. HIghly recommended!
Awesome teacher. Learned more in this class than I ever thought possible, however he does grade really hard. Even with that being said, you will not regret taking a class with Paul Fischer.
One of the best professors I have ever had. His tests are crazy hard and his expectations high, but I have never learned so much from anyone. He's also very easy to talk to and always accessible. Hardest class I've ever taken, but the amount I got out of it was worth the pain.
Paul is THE MAN. He is so helpful in and out of class and genuinely wants his students to succeed.
Paul is a fantastic professor that will keep you challenged but will be there when you need help. He is the nicest, goofiest guy ever. His lectures are very clear, he expects his students to do lots of homework, and his tests are extremely hard. If you are majoring in chemistry, this professor the one to take for Gen Chem.
Paul Fischer is an incredibly enjoyable person who is a lot of fun in class and not afraid to do practical experiments during class. Fair warning- This class is very hard. Tests are curved- without it everyone would fail. Homework is every class, difficult and toughly graded. But he is there to help if you need it and knows his stuff perfectly.
Paul FIscher is pretty amazing. He knows he's a chem geek--in the best sense of the phrase--and owns it. If you need help, the man is there. Will he dumb it down for you? Nope.
Paul Fischer is a total sweetheart. Not only is he one of the SMARTEST and most knowledgable professors at Macalester, he also cares for his student's education a whole lot. This guy will drop everything to help his students through a single question. His classes are very challenging, but only to ensure thorough understanding of the concepts.
Paul is what I aspire to be in life. He is a legend, a gentlemen, and a sir. He is working to attain his long sought molecular vision and I wish him the best in his journey.
Prof Fischer is an energetic person. He has hard tests. Definitely take again.
Paul is the GOAT. His emails breath life into the dreary existence that is college.
His class is actually easy! You just need to go to class and you can easily get at least an A-. He is so nice and inspiring.
Don't let this site fool you. Take Susan Green instead. Please.
Paul is obviously passionate about chemistry, but he's just too smart. He just lectures and doesn't give examples, so often when I would do my homework I would just feel completely confused. I did great in Chem I, but in this class, I was struggling the whole time. He's a harsh grader, and even though there's a huge curve, I left feeling defeated.
I love Professor Fischer! He is passionate about what he teaches and is always accessible outside of class. However, his class is way too hard for a Gen chem class, especially in comparison to the other teachers. His class will give you panic attacks! I would suggest anyone who wants to be a chem major to take him but maybe not other students.
I loved Chemistry in both high school and at a community college level. He made me dread it. The problem was that he made the gen chem class more advanced than it was supposed to and he was a little too egocentric to think about the students who were nonmajors or students who chemistry doesn't come naturally to. All the tons of hw only worth 10%.
One of the worst lecturers I have ever witnessed. He clearly knows a lot about chemistry but is really awful at explaining it, and will go on tangents for at least 20 minutes per lecture. Favorite topics include wrong information about bad sci fi movies and complaining about how regular people don't appreciate the beauty of thermodynamics.
Chem 2 was quite the challenge for me. However, Professor Fischer is hilarious and very kind. He also gives good lectures. Homework is hard, so it definitely helps to do it with others.
Be ready to work hard. It is not easy but you will come out a better person. If you are looking to build your study skills, or to get ready for harder STEM courses, and/or go to grad school/med school; he is your guy! You will learn a lot but you may have to sacrifice sanity. He lectures, grades, and explains concepts very thoroughly.
Was the class easy? No. Were the tests brutal? Yes. Did I cry multiple times over this class? Yes. But as challenging as this class was, Fischer is an amazing educator. His explanation of ideas was very clear and was VERY helpful during office hours. If you're not on the right track, he helps you until you understand everything.
Paul is super passionate about chemistry but gets distracted with things that are more advanced and you dont need to know. Tests are worth a majority of your grade but dont think you can skip homework just because its not worth a lot of your grade. Office hours are great and he explains better in them than in lecture.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken. However, Prof. Fischer was very good at explaining things and took a lot of time to help me in office hours. He seems like a caring person. I felt like this course could be redesigned to better support student learning. I worked for upwards of 6 hours a day on assignments and felt a little overwhelmed.
Inorganic chem is hard, but you should expect that. It was super challenging and I probably spent more time on his lab reports than any other single thing at Mac. He is clearly passionate about chem and it is infectious.
Paul is by far the most difficult professor to have for General Chemistry at Mac. If you are interested in advanced chem, his class might be good for you, but anyone else beware. He goes over material so quickly and the homework takes 3+ hours to complete. That's not even counting the time reading the textbook. He's willing to help but very busy.
Prof. Fischer is a very kind person once you understand how he functions. However, he makes his tests near impossible (averages consistently in the 60s). There is no in class time to review any questions about homework or tests. Be weary of taking this course with him if you rely in getting an A in Chem (unless you're super good at chem).
Professor Fischer really challenges you, if you had CHEM 111 with another professor and then take 112 with Fischer you will be humbled. His homework takes forever and counts very little, but he does have office hours so definitely take advantage of that. Even with that though the tests still managed to be 10x more difficult than the homework.
Professor Fischer is the worst prof I've ever had at Mac. He doesn't seem to understand that not everyone has a PhD in chem and doesn't already know/understand the material. The tests are brutal and he doesn't review common mistakes. The homework takes forever and only counts for 10% of the grade. Do everything in your power to not take his class.
I leave every lecture from Prof Fischer more confused than when I went in. Then I go to his office hours, and they are packed to the extent that it's like another mini class. He doesn't answer questions in class and takes test questions that were frequently wrong as a failing of the class, not as a failing of his teaching of that material.
Dear God do not take this class. Prof Fischer is genuinely the worst teacher I've ever had. If at all possible take Chem with any other professor.
Fischer is a big lecturer and will go on tangents in class. His homework is really hard and each assignment probably takes 1-2 hours just for 5 problems. He expects a lot from his students which makes the course really difficult. His tests are super difficult (our test average for every test was low 60%).
Fischer is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about chemistry, but if you took 111 with another prof or are used to getting A's, you'll be humbled. Exams are worth ~75% of your grade (averages consistently in the 60s), and Fischer acts as if poor performance on exams is a reflection of his students' lack of work ethic rather than his teaching.
Professor Fischer made me feel as though I was incompetent. Despite getting a grade of 98% in the lab (instructed by a different Prof) and a 90% on his never-ending homework, I was still blindsided by every one of his tests. He then takes student's mistakes on his tests as a lack of the students ability rather than a deficit in his teaching.
Prof Fischer's lectures were always very disorganized, hard to follow, and hard to take notes on. He would also go off on tangents, leading to him running out of class time. The homework never eased you into a topic and took forever to complete. The tests were also ridiculously hard. He was very passionate about chemistry, though.
Paul Fischer is the one teacher that you say his name to anyone at this school, STEM student or not, and they know how hard he is. His class is difficult and his homework relates little to his lectures. But, he is incredibly passionate about Chemistry and if you go to his office hours and ask questions you can get through.
Professor Fischer has a bad rep for the difficulty of his classes, but you'll never meet someone as passionate about their work as he is. Down to earth, amiable, and understanding if you show an interest in the material. His 411 class was the hardest class I've ever taken, but I'm glad I took it with him. I've become a better person for it.
Genuinely one of the worst teacher's I've ever had, and I've had quite a few STEM teachers that are bad at their jobs. Lectures are basically rambles, you will leave every session more confused about the topic than you came in. Tests are practically impossible, and homework often takes several hours. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Fischer's lectures were extremely disorganized and hard to follow. His homework problems were extremely difficult, took hours to complete, and were graded on accuracy. Tests are difficult and weighted very heavily in your grade. Luckily, he is pretty nice about giving extensions and tests are heavily curved because nobody does well.
While a hard grader (and test maker), Professor Fischer was an amazing teacher. He is passionate about his work and makes you care about chemistry like never before. if you pay attention and take notes in class, the homework will be review (but not new content). He is an advanced chemist and approaches his teachings as such, but is easy to talk to!
Overall I like Fischer, he's quite eccentric but has a really good heart. Sometimes the lectures or long and get sidetracked but most of the time it's good. This is meant to be a hard class, ur gonna fail sometimes get used to it, but you'll still do fine in the class if you do the homework and take good notes.
Paul is good professor, he's passionate about his job. READ THE TEXTBOOK. He expects you to read it since the conceptual test questions come from the textbook. Homework takes hours, but you'll get used to the amount. Exams are hard. Take advantage of office hours, the max tutoring center, and SI sessions, this is not an easy course. But you got it!
Avoid this professor like the plague. Exams were much more difficult than the homework
This class was MUCH more difficult than Organic Chem. Prof Fischer will throw curveballs on exams
If you go to office hours he'll tell you to read the textbook
I quit the Pre Med track because of Prof Fischer. Studied 6+ hours every day and still got a C. Exams are exceedingly difficult and require complete mastery of the material
You get out of Fischer's course exactly what you put into it. He definitely teaches like he expects everyone in the class to care, so don't take his course if it isn't for your major. He taught me a deep understanding of the concepts, but he could definitely also be more beginner-friendly. Is clearly very passionate about chemistry.
Fischer's class is inaccessible to people without much experience in chemistry
Professor Fischer was rude when I went to office hours . Exams were nothing like the hw
Fischer would be a better prof for accelerated gen chem. If you are not a chem major and you need a good grade, do not take a course with him. His course is extremely fast paced
The line out the door for his office hours is longer than the pasta line at Cafe Mac. If that tells you anything about the difficulty of his course
Most difficult prof at Mac
Pick a religion and start praying.
Prof. Fisher is one of the most inspiring professors/teachers I have ever had. His enthusiasm for chemistry is contagious. Yes, the class is hard but it's very true that your grade is a reflection of the work you put in. Success in this class is very hard to achieve if you do not use all your resources (office hours, SI sessions, MAX center, etc.).
This class was more difficult than organic! Unnecessarily hard
This is an exceedingly difficult class. The HW takes 3+ hours every night
No wonder Professor Fischer is a massive baseball fan and has season tickets for the Minnesota Twins… he throws CURVEBALLS on every exam!
He is married to Chemistry. If you are not ready to be, this is not the Professor for you.
Difficult and unreasonable. Lost hours of sleep studying and doing homework. Avoid taking if you're an anxious tester/don't have hs chemistry experience/struggle with figuring out math/chemical concepts on your own. As a lab instructor, he graded on his own rubric with more requirements/harsher grading. It's been months and I'm still scarred.
professor fischer made things explode in class 👍 unnecessarily difficult course, tests did not reflect what was taught
