Challenging, but one of the absolute best professors ever! Recommend to all!
Good teacher, but very difficult exams
Concerned about student understanding. Difficult exams and take homes impossibl
knows content well, but very very picky and unfair at grading tests and papers
He pushes you, and just jumps into subjects, but I learn well from him
He's not condusive to my learning style, but I still really liked him.
Had no time to talk during office hours. VERY DIFFICULT TESTS!!!!
His exams are impossible, and just wait until the final.
I think he taught his class in Chinese.
Difficult grading style
The material was hard enough without him being so picky. Tests were awful!
I think he's Satan's reincarnate. His class was ridicuously hard and depressing
hard hard hard
HARD; Final Sucks! Too picky, No Liberal Partial Credit!!!
worst ever..HATE him..
Has very high expectations - know your definitions!
Very particular, but will work with you as long as it takes at office hours.

Dr. Fishback is an organized, enthusiastic instructor who expects much from his
Clear about expectations on exams. High standards, yet fair. Expect to work
Creates lively classroom in which ALL students are actively engaged in the learn
He's not Satan! He cares about his students!
Best professor I've had yet....Helpful and Easy
Good sense of humor but kind of tricky. You be the judge.
really awesome teacher...hard but good!

worst grader, bias, and doesnt want people to pass
calc 1 is easy. if you're not getting it, you're not trying enough.

I loved this guy. I have the biggest crush on him. Soooo cute.

very clear, fair
Great guy, willing to help as long as you are willing to try

Great professor, he is hard, but if you go to class he will pretty much tell you what to expect on the test. Really cares about students.
Great Prof. Tells you what will be on the test; is very helpful. Easy class if you're interrested in learning.
Worst teacher in the math department. Tests were impossible. GET OUT!
Great Prof.!! Prof Fishback is tough but you inorder to do well you are forced to learn. If you pay attention in class you know what will be on the exams, if he says know somthing; KNOW IT!! Also He is very helpfull if you are willing to try.
Not too hard. Be prepared to do all of the work plus a lot more on your own. Do not go to his office last minute to ask questions before a test!!
His class is not easy at all. If you try and coast by, you're going to do poorly. However, he is very specific on his expectations, very clear on how concepts work, and if you take the time to meet with him, he will help you understand everything.
awesome, prof. dont just try to coast by though or you'll fail. he has high expectations, just try to meet them
He expects a lot out of you, but is always willing to help. Sometimes plays favorites. Hard grader, but great teacher.
Dr. Fishback is a living paragon of mathematical excellence.
Very underrated professor. Don't always believe everything you hear here. Can be difficult at times, but you will learn. Would recommend to math majors.
His class is easy, but only if you study lots. You need to keep in mind that it is MATH, you do have to do the HW, and work on projects, cramming will not do it. Really enjoyed DR Fishback, and have great respect for him as an intellectual and his work in general.
This man, while looking like a harmless chipmunk with Donald hair, infact rivals satan... He is that evil.
Dr. Fishback is one of the best professors in the department. You will have to work hard, but you will learn a lot. IMT
Has great class handouts! All my friends in other sections are jealous. Where does the guy find the time to put all this wondeful stuff together? He should write a book!
I am frustrated by some of the ratings I see for Dr. Fishback. Quite frankly, Dr. Fishback is a paradigm of academic excellence. If you are lazy do not take him. But if you are serious about math, Dr. Fishback is the way to go. If you are not going to take his class seriously and put considerate
Good guy, hard class. Take someone else.
Is so strict when it comes to grading that he won't help you at all. Does not teach and gives tests that are too long to finish in the class period. Avoid at all costs when it comes to any math classes.
I found this prof to be very ridged. If you go to him for office hours, the tension in the air is so thick you can cut it. He degrades students in class and really has a very strange sense of hummor. Class participation is looked down upon. He is a control freak.
Will not round a 72.5 up to a C. Doesn't really teach, he passes out dittos for you to do for the class period. Instead of answering questions, he gives "helpful hints" and he even gets on this website and rates himself. (See below) All I can say is, TAKE HAIDAR!!!
He definitely rates himself highly on here. He is not a bad guy, but his class requires much more work than necessary. Be ready to put forth a lot of energy into this class without much in return except a bad grade.
hardest class in mth dept, but taught well and glad i took it. plenty of group work which helps. class is well structured and he gives exceptional examples from which to study. need help? go to office hrs. he wants you to figure it out. do all HW and def collaborate if allowed. weird but def smart. great prof.
the only thing difficult about his assignments is the amount of writting required and the neatness with wich he expects the assignments to be done.

hates kids
Labels you right away, and plays favorites throughout the semester. If you are not on his 'good ' list, don't expect helpful one-on-one instruction. Will degrade you to your face by making your questions seem blatently obvious, when they're not.

Anyone who says he is a bad teacher needs to have their head screwed on straight. He is nice compared to the real world. Get over it and used to it.
Prf Fishback is the only Math Prof I've had that is really pationate about a class. After taking him, you'll never want to leave the house without your Invertible Matrix Theorem in your pocket.

i think he is extremely polite to his class.
I really like his story problems. Hey, does anybody know when the final exam is.
Professor Fishback is an amazing professor. I learned alot from this class, although as a person he's kind of a jerk at times and intimidating to the students, as a teacher you will defiently learn alot. I would definently take him again!
Dr. Fishback expects his students to not only do their homework, but to also understand the material. He is a tough professor, but he is fair. His lectures can be difficult to follow (especially his whiteboard scrawlings), but he is very helpful during office hours. I believe he genuinely cares about his students' academic well-being.
Dr. Fishback was an unfair grader, who evidently didn't believe in partial credit. He wasn't available to answer questions very often. I've had math professors that were way more helpful than him.
He acts like no one could/will ever be as good at math as he is & grades accordingly. I understood all the material, did all the homework, came to class everyday and barely got a B?! Reread every assignment because he will find ways to mark off points for ridiculous reasons. (I think it confirms his belief that he is the only one perfect at math)
What's this Invertible Matrix Theorem he keeps talking about? Yo: Does anyone know where the final exam is? I've missed the last 4 weeks of class.
hard class but if you focus and don't get overwhelemed you can get a good grade he teaches pretty good but sometimes mistakes but unerstandable bc this is a hard class to teach
Helluva prof. Explains everything to a T. Fun to have and definitely knew his stuff. His tests are difficult for the most part but he is very good at explaining the material and working with the students.
Ignore any positive comments regarding Professor Fishback--he regularly leaves himself comments to avoid scaring away students (he joked about this at the end of the semester--its true)! He is the WORST professor I have ever had at GV. My friends and I coined a term "getting Fishbacked" to mean when everyone gets screwed for no reason at all.
hard teacher
Dr. Fishback was a great professor for 202. He explains the material clearly and wants everybody to understand before he moves on. Exams and quizzes are very reasonable. Dr. Fishback wants his students to succeed and is very helpful with questions over the homework. I am glad that I will have him again next semester for 203.
Definitly take Fishback, he is extremely helpful, and although has very corny jokes, he keeps class interesting. Probably my favorite professor so far.
Very good calculus professor and I would take him again. He allows plenty of class time to do examples that you have questions on and I got an A so its not an impossible class
Probably the easiest class I've taken so far. He can be sarcastic and has an odd sense of humor but over all a really good teacher. Not very much homework if you apply yourself in class. And his labs almost get themselves done for you. Go to class and pay attention and you will be fine.
Is very clear in class, gives good notes. Labs are very easy, and there isn't much homework. Go to class! It isn't mandetory, but he gives examples that will be on the test. Make sure you study everything you have for the tests! He makes you work for your grade, but it isn't impossible to get an A.
Professor Fishback is a really great teacher! He definitely makes you work for your grade, you really need to study for the tests but as long as you do the work you should be fine!
Dr. Fishback is a teacher really interested in his students, and their success. He is really great about office hours, and if you didn't get the grade you want he'll help you understand why you got the grade you did. Not an easy course by any means, but he's a really helpful teacher that I'd highly reccommend.
He is an ok prof
Do the practice problems, he'll say it in class, and it's true. He doesn't give too much homework, but the group assignments are bothersome.
GREAT PROF. I hadn't had a math class for over 2 1/2 years but he explained the material in a very clear, organized manner. Very helpful. Gives plenty of notice before tests. Enthusiastic about math. Tests are reasonable and he gives many example problems. Do the practice exercises in the book.
Decent prof. He will tell you ahead of time when test/exams are which is great. Quizzes are pretty easy but tests can be kind of difficult. You really have to study for this class! He's VERY picky about written assignments. Gives good notes and clearly loves his job. Probably one of the best math profs at GV!
This man is absolutely crazy. He made me stand in the hall after I couldn't recite the quadratic formula from memory. When I didn't know the sin of pi/3, he yelled at me so loudly that I broke into tears and stormed out of the classroom. I am still in therapy recovering from the trauma of having this lunatic for an instructor.
One class period we were in the computer lab doing a project and he pulled up a chair next to me and just stared. Not at the computer screen, but at me. He didn't say a word until the end of class when he whispered in my ear, "Good Job", and walked away. Other than that one weird day he was a good Professor!
Very nit-picky, concerned about every detail.
He told me that the definition of limit would be the first question on the final exam. I didn't believe him, and boy was I wrong. I lost 6 points for not knowing something so fundamental to the principles of calculus.
Stay Away from this Prof if you actually need to learn calc. I learned half of what I needed to in order to take calc 2 and spent the first month of calc 2 learning having to teach myself what I should have learned in this class. Homework is ridiculous, be prepared to use half a tree in computer paper.
He was great. Very good teaching style. Fair grader and good tests.
Hands down worst professor I've ever had. He's very sarcastic and it comes off rude most of the time. He is no help to people who are new to calc like I was. He assumes that every one knows what he is talking about. I highly don't recommend him if this subject is hard for you.
The tests are no that bad if you study. He only has quizzes over videos that he puts online, so if you watch the videos, you will do well in the quizzes. I thought that he explained every topic well.
He told us we had to know the exact wording of what it means for a sequence s_n to converge to L for our third exam. I was too lazy to memorize the definition, so I failed the exam, failed the course, and had to drop out of college. Now I live in a van down by the river.
Would not take again unless I absolutely had to.
Loved taking 210 with Dr. Fishback. He is funny and makes learning the material interesting. Would definitely take again for any math class. Class is difficult at times, but on the whole I found it pretty easy. I always find math classes easy though, so it could be harder for someone less comfortable with math.
Professor Fishback was great! He is very sarcastic and funny which made the class material more interesting. Overall the class was difficult, but he gives great feedback and helps A TON in office hours. I would definitely take Prof F again for any math class.
Easiest Professor at Grand Valley. Take Fishback if you don't like going to class but like getting A's. Nice guy too, terrible sense of humor though.
Dr Fishback was a great professor. Not necessarily an easy professor, but he does a really good job of explaining concepts in a way that's easy for the class to understand, and all of the homework is very helpful. Don't take him if you're not ready to put some effort into it, but by the end you'll really know the material.
Amazing how I got to Calc III and still don't know trig values of angles on the unit circle. Because of that, the robot I built for EGR 107 exploded and the entire Kennedy Engineering Lab burned to the ground. My life is ruined.
I was walking through MAK Hall after my MTH 097 class (we just learned how to use rulers that day--cool!) when this professor yelled at me from his classroom and asked what we do with the hypothesis when we're negating a conditional statement. How the heck should I know? I still don't know how to add fractions! Found out it was Fishback. Scary!
I think Professor Fishback is great. He helps you out when you ask as long as you have some sense of what you're talking about. Once you catch on to his teaching method/patterns, you'll be fine. Some people think he can be rude, but I never had any problems. And hi, Professor Fishback. I know you read these.
Zero is a natural number.
Professor Fishback is a legend. Although at first he seems terrifying, hes actually an angel sent from above. As long as you actually put in effort in class, youll pass. Definitely go to his office hours too! If you have any sense of humor at all, youll love this man. Just think of him as Dwight from the office mixed with a math genius
The worst professor I have ever had. He is rude and condescending. DO NOT take him.
Professor Fishback is very helpful whenever you ask a question in class or go to his office hours for help. He is hilarious and keeps the lectures fun while still teaching the material. He will make you put in an effort for the A though. His exams are pretty straight forward and easy to study for considering he gives you a list of what to review.
Wish I could have submitted this rating earlier, but I've been waiting since September for Mathematica to download to my computer.
My friends and I are going to write him a five-page letter sharing our opinions about how this course was taught. We'll write it on engineering grid-paper (double sided of course), using our worst handwriting, list our names in random order, paper clip (not staple) the pages together and slide the whole thing under his office door.
He must have told us 10 times how the initial value determines whether we just drop the absolute values or switch the sign of what's inside. I guess I needed to hear it an 11th time? Also, I should probably brush up on my integration by parts before our skills test.
Professor Fishback is a pretty good professor, I had to retake this class though he was not my first time taking it. He taught the material fairly nice, however sometimes he gotten a bit agitated when we didn't know what to say, other than that he's a pretty good choice, attend his OH at all times when needed. He helps a lot more during those!
Professor Fishback was amazing for calc 3. His lectures were very easy to follow, and his preview videos before each topic were really helpful and the quizzes about them were a nice grade booster. The exams were straightforward and not made overly difficult, and the amount of outside homework was reasonable. Highly recommend!
Professor Fishback is the funniest Professor you will ever have. Also if you want extra credit in his class, keep track of the Pitocin going into to your wifes body after she is induced. If you dont, he will volunteer to do so. After all, I thought it was kind of strange that he held his Office Hours at the OB triage at Spectrum Hospital!
Professor Fishback is so helpful and really matches his students effort... he wants you to succeed! Very accessible for help, enters grades fast, and answers emails promptly. His lectures make the material easy to understand which is very helpful when taking a class like Calc III.
Great professor! Would take him again. Always made time to meet with students outside of class. Super understanding. Very little homework, quizzes every week but you will have three attempts, he will try his best to make sure you succeed.
Dr. Fishback clearly knows what he's talking about, and sometimes his lectures do not get down to the basics of the concepts. Nothing is graded for completion, all correctness, which definitely forces you to figure it out. Take home exams. Good guy all around.
Although I would not recommend him as a professor, I can say that I finally understand the Arctangent function, and my heart is full.
I just hope he doesn't find out that I lost my Invertible Matrix Theorem card, because I know it would break the old man's heart. Also, what is this colab thing everyone is talking about?
A great professor you can have a laugh with. However, his outstanding teaching ability does not reflect his ability to walk down the MAK's stairs in poor weather conditions.
Fishback is awesome. I was always excited for class.
Good professor, I just wish I had the heart to tell him I still have no clue how to find arctangent
Fishback is a funny guy who knows a lot about math. While there were times The lectures were a little unclear, he gives you plenty of resources to learn what you don't understand at home. There are a lot of tests, but you get many chances to pass learning targets. While I never went to any, I've heard he has helped many people in his office hours.
Good professor, you just need to know the unit circle to succeed. The amount of learning targets I missed because I still have not learned the unit circle, despite learning about it in middle school is insane.
Except for the unit circle, this class was dope!
He has clear expectations for his students, but will help you reach those expectations. His lectures were engaging and we did a lot of in-class activities which I enjoyed and learned a lot from. Just make sure to pass the learning targets and go to office hours for help and you'll be golden.
Meet the learning targets. Preview assignments are graded for correctness so you actually have to try on those.
Fishback can be funny, but his teaching style is hit-or-miss. The lectures can be unclear, but the resources help fill in the gaps. Lots of tests, but you get chances to pass. Try unstuckstudy for extra study prep!
