Biggest mistake I ever made was taking him. When I asked for help, he said that "I should drop my other hard courses and focus only on Ochem". Perhaps a pre-med can get away with that, but a chem engineer can't. I learned nothing but still pas

great teacher explains things very well and is alsways happy to help you out. I dont know why people have rated him so low, maybe if they actually studied and did the work they would have rated differently. its your responsiblity to know the material.

EXCELLENT professor. The material is naturally hard, but if you show an interest in learning and attempt to attain help, he's very helpful. I learned more and felt like I accomplished more in O-chem II than in O-chem I because of him.

He has a great lecture style that helps you make connections b/w different reactions and concepts. I did poorly in 310 but excelled in 320 b/c of his teaching. He is genuinely concerned that students (who put forth the effort) are satisfied and do well.

Dr. Paul is an excellent prof. his lecture style is very clear but unique. his test are not that easy but they are very fair. he's very approachable and willing to help students. he shows that he cares alot about his students.

Absolutely awful! Through the lectures states that certain topics aren't important then puts them on the exam for questions worth 10 + points. Adds exam questions on chapters never covered. Not approachable at all -- unless you're a young coed.

Very smart man full of helpful techniques and light humor. Classes are enjoyable, tests are fair, and the averages are relatively reasonable. O Chem is by definition a challenge, but Dr. Paul makes reactions and mechanisms logical and interesting.

I am definately not getting a stellar grade in this course, but that is definately not floreancig's problem--if you like examples and being able to blurt out a question in class he's for you.

One of the best prof's I've ever had. Will take the time to explain anything, and does so in a very clear and concise way. Any ochem class is very challenging, but I found Dr. Floreancig's to be very "do-able". Highly Recommended.

don't listen to the kid who gave a bad rating, Dr. Paul is excellent. I am definitely only getting a C in the class but that's my own fault. He is probably the best O Chem prof Pitt has. He makes sure that you understand the important stuff like reaction mechanisms(useful later on) not just naming.

Dr. Floreancig is one of the best teachers I've ever had. If you approach the class with the willingness to work hard and to put your time in, you will succeed in this course. He is very clear and always available for help- and he makes class fun by joking around- definitely take his class.

Dr. Floreancig is by far the best prof I have had at Pitt so far. Go to class takes problems for exams directly from notes. Not an easy class but his presentation of the material is very clear and helpful.

Not a bad guy to have, very likable but virtually inaccessible. Tests are hard, but hey, it's organic chem. It's not supposed to be easy. Study hard and you'll do ok. Average is curved to a B or a C, don't know which.

Not a bad guy at all. He's quite effective usually, but his tests are hard and long. He doesn't use e-mail, which makes it frustrating to contact him. He can also be a little arrogant, but he's still a good professor. Definitely recommened

What a great professor. He is very well organized, thorough, and helpful when at office hours. I would recommend him highly. Exams are based from notes, so the book is not absolutely crucial, but a good idea anyway. This guy knows his stuff! Take him if you can!

I had him for honors Organic 1 & 2. This man is by far the best professor I have had at this university. The class was very demanding, but he made the material very accessible, and was always willing to clarify. This class made me want to pursue organic chemistry as a career!

Dr. F is hands-down the best lecturer I have had at Pitt. Honors Ochem is a pretty demanding course, but his lectures are extremely well organized and clear. I would say his biggest weakness is not having regular office hours, so he's a bit inaccessible. Great guy. I recommend his course and I would absolutely take a course from him again.

Awesome professor! But be prepared to be challenged more than ever before. I mean, it is honors organic chemistry after all. If you want to know organic chemistry inside and out, Dr. Floreancig is your man.

You have to be a bit of a masochist to take honors organic chemistry, but assuming that you are mentally prepared for it, Dr. Floreancig is a fantastic professor. Test are very hard but grades are lenient. Very nice and helpful outside of class too.

Prof. F was an outstanding teacher, and I learned more about theory than I could have hoped to have learned in the regular section. You will have to work harder than you ever had for the A, but it is quite doable (the average grade is curved to a B+ usually). Highly recommended for anyone willing to put in the extra effort.

I learned a ton in honors ochem 1 and 2. Dr. PF is a great professor, extremely helpful in office hours, and tests are difficult but the curve will save you. Homework is not mandatory, it's just there to help you. I preferred rewritingrereading my notes from lectures for studying. Curves the average to a B+. Be prompt and come ready to learn!

Paul is the BEST lecturer I have ever had. He is always available to meet with you outside of his regular office hours. This is a very challenging course, but he alone makes it worthwhile. I have learned more with him in the first semester than I would with two under any other professor. He curves the average to a B+ which is really nice.

Will allow you to record lectures if you get permission. Buy a molecular model set! Your brain will thank you. Textbook is not strictly followed in order; it's all about the lectures. Make sure to review those notes and find a study buddy. This professor really goes out of his way to help you succeed if you reach out. Curves fairly, so don't freak

Absolutely LOVED taking Paul for Ochem 1. Hes funny and keeps lectures light, but still covers important concepts. He loves synthesis problems, and absolutely makes you think of exams, but going to office hours gives you a leg up on everyone else because he makes sure to cover the most important concepts. Im taking him again next semester!

Dr. Floreancig is by far one of the most amazing professors you will have at Pitt. He is an engaging professor that challenges you and gives you all of the tools you need to succeed in his class including lecture outlines, posted lecture notes and lecture recordings. He knows how to make orgo, a difficult subject by itself, fun to learn.

Tests are incredibly long and challenging (like a 57% average), but it's orgo. Clear and engaging lecturer. Does sometimes go fast, but he always stops and asks for questions, which is something unusual but awesome in a 300-person lecture. Makes it very clear what you need to focus on. Grade is solely based on 3 exams + Final.

This is my 1st semester rating of Paul, taking him again next semester. This guy is very knowledgable, but that being said, you need to read the book to do well. HIs tests were pretty hard and there is at least 20 points worth of mechanism on every one. He is available for help and easy to talk to, but you MUST read the book. Points are 3 exams/fin

Paul is the best! It is an incredibly challenging class for sure but his office hours and lecture outlines he posts are incredibly helpful. I would only use the book problems just when you are learning the material. Overall, as long as you put the work in it's not impossible to do well.

Paul or affectionately "Paul Daddy" is an extremely inspirational but demanding professor. Orgo at Pitt is infamous, therefore please be prepared to be putting in at least 20+ hours of studying into every test. I would recommend recopying your notes, watching videos for context and studying very hard for his exams. Cool but tough.

Paul is easily one of the best professors I've ever had. Although his tests can be difficult, they're very fair (and it's ochem so it's supposed to be hard). Seems like a regular guy at first but he's hilarious. He also lets you drop one of the 3 midterms and have the final be worth 50% instead of 40% with all 3 midterms incorporated.

Dr. Floreancig is one of the best professors you could hope to have. I was petrified, but this became one of my favorite classes! Highly recommend office hours. His exams are so fair & after awhile you can even start to expect what is important to him/will be on exam. He is an amazing lecturer; Ochem with him made more sense than Gen Chem ever did.

I regret taking Floreancig. If you're coming into his class with no knowledge of ochem, the class may be very challenging. It doesn't help that he goes through the material extremely quick so it's easy to be left behind. Really wished I took Peng Liu or some other professor who would have laid down a better foundation of Ochem.

Take this mans!!! Engaging lecture, explains material very clearly and always stops to answers questions. Difficult, but fair exams. Curves class to a B-. I highly recommend recopying & studying notes as many exam problems are directly from lecture. Wasn't very good at GenChem, but Paul made it possible to do well in OChem 1 & 2. Amazing professor.

Dr. Floreancig is an amazing professor, and he wants to see his students succeed. He is a very goofy guy, and he is very nice. I loved going to lecture, even though the material was extremely hard. Just be ready to study A LOT for the exams. The only grades you get in the class are from the exams. So, there is no cushioning to your grade.

Dr. Floreancig is a great professor. The class had 3 midterms and a final (can replace a midterm with your final if it is higher). He was engaging and wanted students to do well. Very accessible outside of class. Fair tests with no trick questions. It was very obvious that he wanted students to pass. This prof is a good choice for ochem1!

Professor Floreancig is a nice guy and a solid teacher. Lectures consisted of him writing on a piece of paper that was projected on a large screen for the class to see. His three exams are fair and if you do average you will likely get a B/B-. My biggest complaint would be that his penmanship can get a little shoddy making him hard o follow.

I love this man. I say this during every lecture. I took him for Ochem 1 and 2 because I literally love him so much. He's an amazing teacher and without him, I don't know if I would understand organic like I do. His exams are hard and you have to work for them, but he makes the average be a B. Paul is one of the best O Chem profs at Pitt. He genuinely made me enjoy the subject. His lectures are engaging and as long as you take good notes and study those notes for the exams, you'll be fine. His curve is also probably the best for O Chem at Pitt and he genuinely cares about his students doing well.

Paul is the best! He's passionate about chemistry and makes learning the subject much more bearable. Exams are challenging but fair. His OH are really helpful and he's willing to spend as much time on a topic as students need to understand. Only grades are exams, but his curve is generous (class average curved to B-). Take him for organic 2!

Paul is extremely unpleasant to talk to and is a nightmare for ochem. I spent hours rewriting the notes that he most graciously scribbles on the projecter in the most illegible scrawl, and he always makes sure to mess up enough stuff and cross enough stuff out to never actually make sense. Office hours were unproductive, just tells you to "know it"

You can tell he's really good at chemistry and he has my respect for that. However, he cannot properly explain material at a lower level. He uses large terms in the lecture without explanation leaving a majority of the class confused. His lectures are disorganized and his handwriting is difficult to understand at times.

Ochem is hard by nature, but Paul makes it so much better. 100% of your grade comes from exams but he curves to a B. I would highly recommend Paul as I believe that he is one of the best professors the chem department has. It's a shame that he's not teaching in spring '20 but I would 100% recommend him if he is an option!

Paul is the man to take for ochem. His lectures are so good that I didn't even have to open the textbook and managed to get at least a B on every exam. The avg. for his exams are in the 60s but he curves the avg. to an 80. Exams make up 100% of your grade. A lot of people will say to take George, but Paul is the real GOAT.

Dr. Floreancig is a very nice guy and cares a lot about his students. However, his notes are written on a piece of paper and are unorganized and hard to read. I would suggest you use jochem and other outside sources that are easier to understand. OChem is definitely going to be hard with any professor, so overall I am glad I took him.

He's a very good lecturer, his notes, however, are incomprehensible, but he is a great lecturer. His exams are ROUGH, but he curves the class pretty hard at the end of the semester. I'd recommend him easily over any professor Ochem professor at pitt. 9/10

Floreancig is a good choice for OChem. If you work to understand concepts rather than memorize, pay attention in lecture, go to TA office hours when necessary, and re-write your notes you will be in good shape. He is however not very sociable and hard to connect with if thats something you look for.

All I'm gonna say is I literally failed all 3 midterms (yes, literally), but somehow pulled a B- in this class by doing decent on the final and having a high curve in the class. I was going to drop the class but I'm glad I didn't.

Ochem is brutal whoever you take it with. Watch JoeChem videos! Here is a pros and cons list for Dr. Floreancig. Great lectures and he uploads notes and outlines to courseweb, however they make much more sense if youre there. He has MANY UTAs unlike some other profs and I found their office hours very helpful. He also curves to a B- which is only slightly higher than other professors but it makes a huge difference. I thought he was very fair and kind.

Paul is amazing. I started out failing the class but once I started going to office hours and tutoring, I got As & Bs. His TAs are great. KNOW THE MECHANISMS, It will make life so much easier. Curves class to B-, will drop lowest exam. Rewrite notes & make study groups. OChem is hard, but if you have Paul and work hard, It is totally possible.

Hard class but Paul gives you all of the resources to do well. He posts lecture notes and key point summaries, has office hours for himself and a bunch of UTAs, and has many grading options. Paul is one of the best professors I've had at Pitt. While lecture isn't necessarily mandatory, it might as well be. He bases essentially everything off of his own notes and often disagrees with the book. Exams are really hard but passable, and he curves the average to an 80. If you work for it, you can get a really good grade!

Paul is definitely the person to take for ochem. The material is dense but he makes it very manageable. I didn't touch the textbook once and managed to get an A in the class. HIs lectures can be boring at times but he throws in a dad joke here and there to keep everyone engaged.

I promise you do not "want a challenge" in this class. He blows through examples and does not explain concepts well. Big curve though. Regardless, I had to retake this class so I took another professor and got an A. (side note: I had an actual death in my immediate family the week of an exam and he did not respond to my email until after the exam)

Orgo is a hard class in itself and Paul is super smart but man this guy flies through material. You absolutely can't slack off in this class as it will come back to bite you. He says he doesn't emphasize memorization but you need to for organic chemistry regardless. Gives lots of practice problems/exams and tons of time for office hours w/TAs.

I wish I could take him again, because I have never had a better professor in college. Ochem is a hard class, and he teaches it really well. Go to office hours, joechem won't help you and don't bother with the book. My average on the midterms was an 80% and I got an A in the class. He is a great guy and cares a lot! Learn to study the right way.

Paul may have been a good professor for in-person classes, but due to covid and classes being online he barely taught us. He used handwritten notes from the previous semester and just scrolled through them. He hardly answered responses in the chat (typically, he left that to TAs), and when he did answer he usually gave a sassy response. Don't take.

Organic chemistry is a tough class to begin with, but this online thing definitely made matters worse. The lectures were just him scrolling through handwritten notes from years past. No homework or anything considered towards your grade, literally just exams. This class literally made me feel hopeless. Only plus really big curve.

Learning organic chemistry over zoom was pretty difficult, but I think Dr. Floreancig was able to explain topics effectively. He primarily referred to pre-written lecture notes but usually would pull out the iPad to clarify concepts for people. Your entire grade is dictated by exams, so I would suggest people watch lectures live and ask questions.

Dr. Floreancig is a great choice for Ochem 1. Definitely do the midterm practice and UTA practice sheets. Joechem is helpful especially the worksheets. Just put in time to understand lecture notes outside of class and you should be good for exams. Do not bother touching the textbook.

Paul once said, "I purposefully make the exams long and difficult to inspire you!" It only made me frustrated not inspired. He is a nice guy, but also couldn't be bothered to make new, organized, and legible notes. Your grade is based on 3 exams. Watch JoeChem and Khan Academy for better explanations. I learned a lot but my GPA doesn't reflect it.

Taken during COVID: Paul is a solid choice for ochem. His exams are very reflective of the material he teaches in lecture, he provides multiple practice exams, and his UTAs are very helpful. The downsides of taking him are that his notes are pretty disorganized (all of the lecture material is handwritten), and his recitations are not useful.

Prof Floreancig was a very nice guy to take class with. Impossible to learn if you don't attend class. The class was very challenging, but all OChem is. Only graded by exams and finals. Do not fall behind! Curves the average to a B-, overall an okay teacher

PF is a great choice for OChem 1! It is by no means an easy class, but take good notes, practice as much as you can, and go to office hours and you should be ok. Curves to a B- which means you should aim for the average on each test to get a B or above. I failed every exam but got a B on the final and passed the class so put in the work early on!

Very good choice for ochem 1 and will set you up well for Ochem 2. Not an easy class by any means, but as long as you focus on what he says in class and study it over again you will be fine. Tests are very difficult, and he makes you apply the knowledge you learn in class, but he curves the class to a B-. Makes chem interesting!

very hard to follow along with the notes, doesn't rewrite the notes. sometimes dismisses students' questions because he "already explained it". grades depend on only midterms and final and there are rarely any practice questions given, only before the midterms.

I dont recommend this professor at all. Extremely hard to follow in lecture. He handwrites it all and it becomes scribbles. Take anyone else, trust me. Really tough exams.

Lectures are extremely hard to follow and are just him scribbling onto a piece a paper. Doesn't explain things well so you will have to use outside resources to actually learn. Tests are graded by TAs and follow a strict rubric, so are graded very tough and unfairly. Grade depends entirely on tests and there is no practice. Would not take again.

Notes were extremely hard to follow. Spent hours a week outside this class trying to learn the material but notes were messy. Exams are very hard. There is no homework, the only thing that makes up your grade is your exam. I highly suggest taking someone else.

Your whole grade is just exams and those exams are tough. He's a smart guy though and although his lectures feel a bit weird he asks good questions and is excellent at teaching content. He does have some weird grading from time to time but overall very solid professor and good if you are looking to learn a lot.

He's a nice enough person but his class is extremely difficult. The class consists of 3 exams and a final and nothing else. Exams are pretty tough but mostly fair on the material covered. Make sure to go to both his and his UTA office hours whenever possible and do the book problems. Also don't use Joechem as he has a personal vendetta against him.

Professor Floreancig was one of the best professors I have had at Pitt so far. He held office hours every week that were very helpful (if you came with specific questions). He lectured by handwriting his notes and then posting them after every lecture along with a "highlight" of important ideas to know from each lecture. Would highly recommend!

Dr. Floreancig is a nice person, but his lectures were difficult to follow. He wrote notes on a piece of paper during lecture and projected them, and sometimes it was hard to read. His office hours are helpful if you come with questions, so make sure to attend them. There is a very generous curve at the end, so don't worry if you fail an exam.

Solid professor. His teaching style wasn't my favorite (sometimes referenced foreign terms), but I still did well because I referred to the hand-written notes along with a bullet-point summary he posts for each lecture, along with doing all the practice exams. He has a good sense of humor so don't be afraid to approach him in office hours.

Paul is a tough professor. Orgo is a tough course, but only having 3 exams dependent on your whole course grade is ridiculous, no extra credit, no homework to even practice your skills. He isn't accessible by email, I would not take him again if I have another chance to.

Only graded by 3 midterms and a final (no homework or extra credit) which made exams pretty stressful. I did average on every exam and ended up with a B-, which is a big redeeming factor for his class. Extremely inaccessible by email and relied on gradescope graders that often made mistakes. Overall okay - prepare to study a lot outside of class.

I really enjoyed how Paul lectured... he hand wrote all his notes in class and walked through concepts step by step. That being said, he was also extremely disorganized. I found that reading the book & taking notes was immense in grasping concepts. Tests are difficult but still fair... no trick questions, but you need to have a solid understanding.

Hard class, lots of content and material to cover. He teaches purely through reactions and mechanisms. You must pay close attention as he moves quickly. If you read the textbook and do the optional practice problems, you will do well in this class. Average on exams is around 50-60 but he curves the class to a B-.

For OChem, he made it manageable. Taught everything in a way that was easier to understand and would explain better in office hours if you went. If I didn't check out in the middle of the semester I would've done better but thats on me. Great choice if you keep up with the material. No homework in the class

Dr. Floreancig is a great ochem professor. Ochem is hard regardless of the professor you take, but Paul's class is structured very nicely! He gives amazing lectures, so if you miss class, you may struggle a tad.

Grades were 100% exam-based but he was very generous with partial credit and curves to a B-. It's easy to get behind since there's no required homework. The notes don't make sense if you don't go to class so even though attendance isn't mandatory, it's necessary for a good grade. He provides old exams, use those to practice over the textbook.

He took class notes with pen + paper, made illegible scribbled mistakes that confused the heck out of you if you weren't in class, basically blamed students for low averages, constantly drew mechanisms differently and had missing arrows, pacing was so fast my hand had constant cramps. Grades are 100% exam based. This class was a big headache. Avoid

MAKE FLASHCARDS. As long as you stay above the average you should be just fine. He's a little messy with lectures but he provides textbook practice. TA's are also excellent, both UTA and TA position are well-rounded and knowledgeable. Use TA Mike K. if he's still there. I can understand why some people don't like him or his lecture style.

Great guy and has a good sense of humor. As a professor, he obviously knows his stuff but expects every student to understand everything after going over it for a few minutes. Only graded by exams. Heard he curves well though. Every exam had an average in the 50s.

Paul is a very knowledgeable professor. His style is not for everyone though as he dives into the more conceptual side of Orgo 2. For exams, don't expect to work with complex figures but be able to explain the "why" behind every reaction and observation. You can memorize your way to an ok grade but not a great one. Be prepared to conceptualize.

Easy to fall behind in lectures, but his office hours are extremely helpful and he explains everything in detail that is easy to understand. Tests are super conceptual so make sure you understand the "why" of the reactions. I thought lectures were structured well but could get hard to follow at times. Flashcards and office hours is my best advice.

Great professor, the exams are very fair--most everything we cover in class is fair game. He does not waste time in lectures, so it may seem overwhelming if you don't take advantage of office hours and TA review sessions. It's a tough course, but his lectures are well done and he's great at explaining the more difficult concepts.

Not the best but not the worst. Exams are VERY CONCEPTUAL. You need to understand why things happen its not just memorizing reactions. He posts notes but do not rely on that and skip lecture because they're impossible to follow on their own. Use them as a backup if you can't keep up in class. Ochem is hard, get the average on exams you'll be fine.

Ochem with Professor Floreancig can be tough, but his lectures and use of Unstuckstudy make it manageable. Attend class, use old exams to prep, and you'll likely pull off a solid grade.

Great professor. His lectures are very interesting and informative. He's very intelligent and knows basically everything about organic chemistry. His exams are very difficult, but there's a large curve. It's honors ochem so it's difficult, but if you enjoy chemistry and just want to learn, there's no other professor I'd want to take for ochem.
