Story time with uncle Paul anyone? Reads the textbook to you so if your illiterate this is the class for you, but if you want to learn anything try another professor
He reads the textbook line for line, with NO extra knowledge, and as he is blind, it is an extemely slow process. I found, as did the rest of the class, that I could teach myself the material faster and better than he could by reading on my own. :( Really unfortunate.
Boring boring boring. He reads from the textbook or tells monotonous stories about his family. You can learn far better from the book. Extremely picky about papers he has 250% worth of deductions you can earn for FORMATTING errors such as not centering a heading etc. Says he has "spies" in the class to see if you come or not since he's blind.
paul is blind, ironicly his major is sensation and perception...he reads the txt book and tells stupid stories about how he grew up being blind, one can do well and read the txt book and never go to class... i never went to his class after the first week and just went to mid terms and I got an A overall
He quickly went over the text and then went into telling us that we should get into some company that he is in. The class was like a commercial for his company. He also changed the structure of the class ten times, tests were never when they were supposed to be and we only got through a little of each book that we had to buy. SO bad.
although paul reads out of the text he knows his stuff when it comes to research. i talked to him about my honours project and not only was he truely interested, he had good suggestions. I will say though that he does himself a disservice by reading so much in class. I never had a commercial class though.
He read way too much, he had interesting stories but i couldnt force myself to stay awake in the class. Its a good class to use to catch up on other work. Wouldnt take his class again.
subject matter varied from course completely. complete left turn.
I feel bad complaining about him because he really is a very nice man and I went to see him about clarifying the instructions and he was extremely helpful. However, truth be told, he is a poor prof. Very boring. Only reads from the text. It is not at all necessary to attend this class to get an A.
This was a horrible class! Paul reads from the textbook and jumps around so much he is very hard to follow. Going to class is unbearable. Tests are straight from the text but often you are unsure what the exams will cover as he changes his mind every class and very rarley covers the right material. A very confusing prof! Wouldn't recomend.
he is blind but a very very nice teacher...he is very approachable. his tests are straight out of the text book. i havnt shown to class since the first week and my grade is still at a A level. lets hope it stays that way haha
He is such a nice guy. he is blind but very very aware of the things that is going on around the class room. I will definately recommand him :) you dont need to go to class to do good at all BUT you have to study the text cause his exams are all based on the book
Paul is a wonderful prof and works really hard to make his lectures interesting. It must have been very hard to have gotten to where he is today with the obstacles he has encountered. Good for you Paul!

I actually was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this class. Dr. G. is a genuinely kind man and is more than willing to help (although people did not really need it in this introductory course). It was also SUPER easy, which was definitely a bonus. Bugs me that between 8 to 12 out of 60 people showed up (he has lots of valuable insights).
So confusing, not recommend unless you already know most of the stuffs. Try to avoid this guy.
i think he is a great prof. his lectures come strictly from the text. the course is really interesting, and he marks papers great. also, really accomodating if you need to make up an exam, unlike most prof's who could really care less... i take as many classes with paul as i can
He really tried to have interesting lessons, but the material wasn't. He was right out of the textbook, so class attendence wasn't necessary. The tests were easy, but the paper was a joke. I'd recommend him because of the easiness of the course.
In a class of 60 only 6-10 people attended on a regular basis. I think I attended 6 classes and stayed for one complete one. He reads from the text and often makes mistakes or argues with the text material, but the tests come from the text manufacturer. So basically buy the text, show up occasionally and collect your B.
Make sure you do the "study questions" he gives you, as they will be extremely helpful for his exams. Also, for the paper, focus on research he has done.
Nice guy. Very helpful and considerate. Really has a lot to teach you about adaptation and diversity. You have to go in with an open mind -- if you do you will for sure come out with knoledge you won't atain in any other class.
Awful. Reads DIRECTLY from a poorly organized textbook, occasionally arguing with its content, while not making things particularly clear. most of the examples he uses in this Non-Visual Perception class are to do with the visual system. The term paper is pointless and tedious. That being said, this professor is a GPA booster to be sure.
Pauls class was not very useful to go to, he does read a lot out of the textbook, and he isn't very exciting to listen to. That being said this is the easiest class I have ever taken in my academic career, he gives the exams to you in the form of "study questions" The A+ I will receive in this class will be worth any level of bad teaching!!
So - FYI to all the students who think Paul's class is a GPA booster! Rutherford (head of the department) cracked down on us in the last two weeks - no more "study questions"!!! He has to reduce his class average! WATCH OUT!
Easy class, very helpful, but now class attendance is mandatory because he gives out hints about the exam in class. Overall, very approachable and helpful. I would take his class again.
As someone who is very interested in perceptual psychology and physiology I found the class enjoyable. Time and energy isn't wasted trying to navigate jargon, he focuses on crucial points and ideas, for most this make it an easy course because he tells you what is key. To me this allowed me to focus on understanding the ideas and I feel I learned.
Lectures are kind of boring but are MANDATORY if you want to do well. The test are all fill in the blanks, but if you attend class you will find that he gives you the answers. Hes a super nice guy. A bit confusing at times, but you just have to ask for clarification and he is more than willing to reexplain.
He may be dull and extremely repetative, but he even said in his first class that repetition is a way of remembering things, and you definitely remember what he talks about since he repeats it so much. You have to go to class for sure, but you'd probs do fine just reading the textbook over a couple of times.
Such a great prof!
Easy, gives test answers in class, just show up and write down the questions+answers and you'll get an A no problem. Class is boring though, can't say I learned a lot, mostly just short-term memorized the answers and spat them out during the test. Good GPA booster for almost anyone. Really nice guy too.
Really nice guy, boring lectures. You must attend, and listen intently if you want a good grade. The exams are literally fill in the blanks, and if you just know the generalized idea or even read the textbook a few times, you might still have trouble.
Worst teaching method in this class ever. Need to memorize specific words for tests. His third year courses are a piece of cake compared to this one, which involves learning about monkeys aggression habits and comparing it to blind people and writing a paper on it. Way too much reading required. Take home final and final exam. NOT GOOD
Surprisingly interesting class. Very easy to get a good grade in this class: print off the notes ahead of time, highlight the words he makes note of, and remember these words for a fill in the blank style test. You literally have the answers to the exam if you do this. Very clear instructions for papers, and he is willing to answer any questions
I've never just stopped going to a class in my entire life... Until Paul's class, he is incredibly bland to listen to, and reads directly, word for word out of the textbook. A complete waste of time. This is university, not kindergarten, I don't need someone to read me the textbook. Class is easy because he gives the exam questions. Just terrible.
Paul is super nice and means well, but most of the questions for exams are hinted at or given out in class. He is very approachable outside of class if you really want to discuss a topic mentioned though, so if you actually want to learn about non-visual perception he is knowledgeable.
Honestly, go to his class, listen, and you'll do great in this class. He is super into the subject matter, but it can be difficult to pay attention all class. Otherwise he is a very approachable prof and will help you if need be. If you miss class, either get the notes from someone else or read the text book because he gives out questions on exam
Very easy class. He is a nice and funny guy. Go to ALL the classes, he literally gives you ALL the questions that are going to be on the exam. GPA Booster.
Most boring class by far. However, the test questions are all given out in class. Good GPA booster if you are able to sit through every lecture (seriously difficult to do)
Attendance is mandatory since he gives out exam questions during class. Very nice professor and his lectures are helpful although some students might feel bored.
WORST PROF EVER. The lectures are extremely dry & boring. The paper & tests are absolutely ridiculous. I did not learn a thing in his class. The exam is literally fill in the blank. Unless you have a spectacular memory, you are hooped. the final exam was 274 fill in the blank. so good luck memorizing specific words from the 100 plus pages of notes.
The FILL IN THE BLANK tests are ridiculous. They do not test the material, rather they test if you are able to read his mind about what he is talking about in a particular sentence and are great for if you have memorized the textbook word for word. Also, expected to do math (long division) without a calculator and without warning. Not a math class.
Horrible, he literally just reads you the textbook. How you can call his method 'teaching' is beyond me. $500 for a guy to read me a textbook, and then give fill in the blank tests on the material is absolute highway robbery of your money and time. Nice dude and all, but AVOID.
The prof reads word for word out of the text book and offers no further explanation of concepts in class other than the information provided by the text. In class the material is covered by answering 10+ long answer questions from each chapter that are written in the text book then we are tested in a fill in the blank format.
This class was a GPA booster for me and I can honestly say it was not worth it. The lectures were so incredibly boring I would have rather taken ANY other class from ANY other professor. He literally reads straight from the textbook to you. Can't believe he is allowed to do that and actually be called a professor. DO NOT take this course.
This class is only 50 minutes long and I almost fall asleep every time. He reads word for word off of the text, and doesn't add this own perspective into it. He would especially have an interesting point of view, considering the fact that he is blind. I was taking his class next semester tooand I had to drop out of it because I couldn't handle it.
terrible. wish I had read the reviews and dropped it. Reads directly from the book, that isn't even a textbook, its more of a novel and that's the only thing you can study from. only two exams, one midterm worth 35% and one final worth 65%. Not sure how he can read directly from the textbook and expect you to learn.
I would avoid this class at all costs, FIB midterm was ridiculous, lecture was long and boring. I honestly can say I have learned nothing useful from this class
Extremely boring class and prof. Found it so hard to pay attention, as all he does is read directly from the textbook. Also be prepared to know word for word from the text as he does fill in the blank questions on exams. Completely regret taking this class!
I attended every class, took pages of notes and read everything. Still only got 67. I'm a Psych major and have averaged 80s in every other class. I'm a transfer and needed a second intro psych for ubc reqs - But I took 2 years at another uni and was fine. Only marks were the midterm and exam (46%/54%). Not a fair grading process.
One word advice, if you are interested in psychology, "NO!" Testing FIB and reading through textbook is NOT psychology at all AND it is even worse when you explain some concept while disregarding the results from other areas of researches
Professor Gabias is a blind professor, so his lectures are all delivered vocally. As such, you should not skip class if possible. His courses depend heavily on textbook readings, but the professor makes sure to emphasize what he will be looking for on exams very clearly in lecture. He is very friendly and receptive to questions.
Dr. Gabias seems like a nice person on the surface and has a gentle sense of humour. However, his course structure is very difficult to follow along with, especially when he is reading directly from what you are assigned to read. The textbook is very information heavy and he doesn't seem to teach in a way that makes it understandable.
Do yourself a favour and do not take this class or this prof. Nice guy but horrible prof.
As everyone has said: Paul is a kind man but probably the worst professor I've ever had. Makes you memorize 75-100 fill in the blank questions randomly drawn from the textbook. You don't actually learn anything from Paul because he is a robot and reads the textbook to you every single class like you're 5 years old. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.
Paul is blind, but a very caring and kind professor. For 111 he essentially just read through the textbook and elaborated on things which needed it. If you need slides/visuals, do not take him. If you are fine with showing up to class and going through the textbook on your own before/after his class is very easy.
Paul reads out from his tests in class and gives a very specific outline of what is on each test. The class was overall extremely easy. His lectures were pretty boring cause he just talks the whole time but he does give away test answers often so worth it to go to lectures.
Dr. Gabias lectures can be a bit dry as there are no slides and he reads to you the entire time. However he does give out all of the test questions in class so listen closely and this class will be a perfect GPA booster. I can see the course being very challenging if you do not show up to class.
His rating should be higher. He made it extremely easy to succeed if you show up and pay attention. kind and caring prof. Took this course in the summer and he was very specific about what was on the tests. Lectures can be dry at times but overall, the class was super easy and I found the material interesting. 10/10 would recommend
I think Paul deserves better ratings. Lecture slides won't be posted (or used at all) but if you study the text you will do fine. He emphasizes what you need to know and the class is pretty slow-paced. You don't need to show up to class if you do the readings but he gives answers to exam questions during class so it is helpful to do so.
Paul's lecture are slow but are worth going to. I was a student during the COVID-19 shift to online courses, and when you can speed them up they are much better. Textbook is mandatory as he essentially reads aloud outlines and some test questions. If you cannot learn from a textbook, maybe steer clear but to most he is fine. Audio record for sure.
I participated in this course in the summer semester and it was online. This man was an absolute gem of a teacher and made things very simple. The test had questions which were word for word from the lectures. The weighting was 46% midterm, 50% final and 4% participation. Not too difficult tests and all open book. He answers emails within the day!
Paul is undoubtedly a very educated man but his lectures are so dull. It's so hard to stay focused cause all he does is read from the textbook. However, he will list of test qs (take note of these) and his tests are pretty easy if you study hard. Take this class w a different prof if you can but if not, it's not the end of the world.
I highly recommend to not enrol in a class taught by Dr. Gabias. He may be the worst prof I have had so far in uni. He reads word for word from the textbook and provides little elaboration on the topics, leaving the content very confusing and ambiguous unless you have previous knowledge on the content. Fill in the blank test question r brutal. 1/10
Dr. Gabias definitely deserves better ratings! he gives so much opportunity to do well in his class. He reads the textbook & emphasizes what to know for the test. It was an adjustment at the beginning but taking notes on the textbook then watching lectures & typing in his comments helps a lot. He reads the exact test questions & answers before test
Paul is very knowledgeable in his field. But his lecture style was just reading the textbook to you, no slides. I am a visual learner so if your like me his style will not work for you and you will fall asleep during the pre-recorded lectures and so difficult to stay engaged. His voice is monotone and speaks very slow. I dropped the class,no thanks
Hard to listen to. He improperly defines terms and refuses to acknowledge current research or views that he doesn't agree with, and he doesn't agree with currently accepted research!
-You have to learn everything by yourself (he will read the textbook aloud to you and only some parts) -Very specific things on the test -I don't understand how a prof can make you do an 70 question test in 50 minutes, very rushed and barely able to complete the test in time
His lectures are just.. dull. His nice and his midterms are open book though but all the questions are based on the textbook. The class is very forgettable and boring.
His lectures were slow and a bit dull. He didnt provide slides and skipped some parts frequently. However, Paul explained the concepts clearly and read the exam questions and answers during lectures. Pay attention to the lectures, then all the exams will be really straightforward.
He is very kind and funny, but his lectures are very boring, he basically just reads from the textbook the whole time.
His style of teaching might not fit everyone, but Professor Gabias is an expert in his topic so its really cool hearing him talk about this stuff. Stick really closely to the textbook because he will basically go through it clarify examples. This is also a really good course for flash cards and quiz lets if youre into that kind of thing.
He just reads from the textbook w/ a monotone voice (sped up for online helps), if you pay attention he drops a few exact exam Q's during lectures. If you aren't good with self teaching, his classes will be tough. His exams are short but soooo many questions, don't waste ANY time or you will run out and miss Q's. Fill in the blank Q's are BRUTAL:(
Dr. Gabias' lectures were very uninteresting and unhelpful. They were all pre-recorded and half didn't even have a camera. All he did was read the textbook. There was very little motivation to participate or engage in the material. I didn't finish a single lecture and just read the textbook for the final and midterm.
I found this course not difficult because of the content but difficult because of how it is taught. Dr. Gabias will talk for 30 minutes all to say that everything that was just said is wrong so you are constantly left wondering what you should be paying attention to. You could 100% skip the lectures and just read the textbook.
his lectors are him reading the textbook. you could read your textbook on your own and be fine. he does not tell you what the tests are made up of until a week before. he does not accommodate students he is really bad. dont take any of his classes
Prof Gabias is a very nice person. Don't be shy to talk to him. He is using examples from the textbook all the time. Read the textbook.
Dr. Paul Gabias is a kind prof and is clearly very passionate about what he teaches, HOWEVER, lectures are boring. Good news tho, you do not need to go to the lectures to do well in the course! The midterms and final will be a breeze for you if you just read the textbook (and take notes on the concepts and definitions). Seriously!
terrible. read textbook all the time
Such a great person. He's a blind prof. btw. Had his class online with tests/exams online. Watch his lectures, there is actually interesting info in it. If the class has a same format as this, I would take it again. Make sure to start SONA early into the course.
Dr.Gabias is a wonderful human and brings a different prospective, he deserves a better rating!!! He used the textbook as lecture material and adds examples and explains things that may be more challenging to understand. His exams are straight to the point so as long as you listen to lectures/follow along in the textbook, you will do great!
Dr. Gabias reads word for word from the textbook that you are required to buy. The lectures drag on, I can never keep my attention focused even though it is only an hour lecture. Attendance is mandatory even though we don't learn any new materials in class. This is the most disappointing class (along with psyo 315) I've taken in my 5 years at uni.
Awful lectures. Reads word for word from textbook. I have to take his classes to graduate so unfortunately I have him again next semester but seriously I've never experienced a worse class in my life. Very disappointed to have wasted my money on these courses. Extremely dissatisfied.
I'd say he's one of those people who are very knowledgeable but have no teaching skills. He might drop a few important things, but pretty much just reads the textbook in class. TAs enforced mandatory attendance with a sign-in sheet after students stopped showing up when they realized they had paid for a very expensive but dull audiobook.
Awful Awful class/. He reads everything straight form the textbook and taght slower than schedule then asked us to read a few chapters on our own a week before final.
Absolutely horrible. NEVER take his classes if you don't have to. He just reads straight out of the textbook, and then puts random questions on the midterms that weren't even in the textbook. Extremely poor time management, and he told us to read nearly 80 pages largely on our own a few days before the final. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT TO CRY DAILY. He reads straight from the textbook and does not give clarity when you ask a question. Your grade is just based off 3 exams which he does not prepare you for. His expectations exceed what he teaches you. Very nice individual but a horrible teacher.
Listen to the other reviews DO NOT take his class. He is a kind and accomplished person, however, not a good teacher. He just reads the textbook and expects to memorize the whole book. Not worth money at all.
I took non-visual perception online and then visual perception in-person with Paul so I can say with full certainty he NEEDS to stick to online formats if he isn't going to adapt his teaching style. Attendance wasn't mandatory until nobody was showing up to class. He needs to address WHY people felt like teaching themselves was preferred.
Each class is spent reading from the textbook only. He doesn't tell you what page he's on and simply starts reading. He barely covered the material we needed to know for the final and made us read around 100 pages of the textbook on our own. Avoid unless you want to teach yourself the whole course. Unfortunate experience.
Dr. Gabias reads off of the text, word for word! He is not meant to teach an in-person class and expects you to remember the smallest details and numbers from a really old textbook. Class averages were so low for a psychology course. No lecture slides or study guides were provided. Not worth the money at all.
Disappointing class. He reads straight from the textbook without guidance, doesn't elaborate on content, and misrepresented the midterm. Often disrespectful to students. Feels like paying just to read a textbook. Wouldn't recommend. :/
To let everyone know, he is a blind professor. He's very smart. However, the way he teaches sets you to failure in this class. The course has so much information to memorize, and having him as prof is not helpful at all. Almost everyone in the class just have to study on their own. He doesn't provide slides at all or anything to help us.
Feels like a joke to me. I paid so much money for the class just to listen to him read the textbook out word for word.
The professor provides no help at all in this class. He just simply reads from the textbook.the professor's performance is extremely poor, making it impossible for you to develop any interest in the psychology course or improve your grade.
Complete waste of money you literally are just paying money to memorize the textbook by yourself he does not teach he just reads the textbook slowly for an hour. Tests are easy if you memorize because he tales questions directly from textbook material
This class is basically the most expensive story time you'll ever attend. The prof reads straight from braille in a monotone voice often loses his place and then starts improvising. Clickers are used. Don't buy the textbook just find the textbook online for free (PFD coffee). read it over and just study the definitions. Good luck you will need it
Paul reads off the braille version of textbook, which yes, can be boring but I found that making Anki cards for all the textbook readings during lecture really helped. I found the midterms to be good and easier than the final, which was not too bad, just more application based. Going to class helps because he will cover exam material.
Not a great class. Dr. Gabias read from the textbook word for word and it was often unclear what to study for the very heavily weighted tests. The tests were not too bad, but the content we covered seemed very random for an intro psych course as we spent a lot of time doing physiology, research methods, and history instead of psychology.
He reads from the textbook, meanders and brings up weird politically-shifty topics. He doesn't seem like he really wants to be there, not enthusiastic. Studying for the tests is easy though, although there are a lot of questions (like 180 multiple choice on one midterm).
Given he is blind, he is doing the best he can. Personally speaking, if you show up to class, it's an easy A. He basically gave us the answers to every midterm/exam during class. A lot of students did poorly on the exams due to not showing up, so he scaled the grades at the end of the semester. I showed up every class and ended the course with 100%
