He's a bit of a jesus nut, but considering he teaches theology i guess that's expected.
Such a nice guy! Good teacher too, all his quiz questions in civ comes from the notes
HE IS SO DAMN HOT!
My best friend!
He is sooooo friendly and sweet! Greatest guy you'll ever meet. Family man. Dangerously intelligent. ;-) I love that he is so passionate about what he teaches. He is devoted to his faith, and he's not cynical like so many other profs.
Wonderful man and absolutely adorable! Totally into what he teaches, but is definitely willing to hear your point of view. Class was always interesting.
The team isnt the same teachers anymore..it used to be harder..gondreau is an awesome teacher and wicked hot...deff affair material
interesting lectures
He knows what he's talking about but he has a superiority complex. Always needs to make his presence known, even during other prof's lectures. Lover of Thomas Aquinas and anti-anyone who dares to contradict Aquinas. And what's up with him and Dr Esolen
No Comments
i dont know what people are saying, but he is extremely close-minded. can be a very nice guy...if you agree with his point of view. lectures arent bad and hes an alright teacher
Knows his stuff for theology, but VERY closed minded and defensive about church...overall nice guy and funny, but dont try to argue with him cause he'll win
Concerned about what you learn and very good at discussion.
This man hit me over the head with a piece of Catholic doctrine. Literally. If you don't agree with what he has to say, wear a helmet or don't speak up. Otherwise, a nice enough guy.

this guy is totally smart and cool inside and outside of class. i found him very helpful and wants to students to learn. i don't think is pushy or close-minded at all, just the opposite. i guess some of his critics can't stand to learn christian teaching.
He's really nice and has a lot of knowledge about what he teaches about.
Hardest grader on earth, wicked nice dude, teaches a ton.i loved him and thought he was just great...definitely needs to ease up with those grades tho...if u go to him for help he'll love u and take a LITTLE mercy on ur grade, but definitely not too much
Seemingly a nice, friendly man. He is helpful with clarifying things he teaches in class. However he is closeminded, and ****. He thinks that a womens place is in the home. And has made derogatory comments about the womens movement outside of class. If you can avoid having a real conversation with
Smart but closeminded to the point where you begin to question if he would take it out on your grade. Well-intentioned and definitely devoted to his faith -- unfortunately his dogmatism and intolerance doesn't do much for any one who is struggling with their own spirituality.
a little overzealous in his dogmatic preaching. I'm a catholic and even I was often overwhelmed and turned off by his preaching. Discouraging for those who enjoy objectivity in the classroom. Overall a nice guy who is just too closed minded for many.
very proud of the fact that he's the CIV "captain"
He is passionate about his faith, which can turn some students off. He might be the most conservative person on campus. At times can appear to be close minded. Seems to be a friendly guy and nice to his students, but i wouldn't want to get into a religious debate with him, and i'm a devout Catholic.
Ultra-conservative Roman Catholic. Avoid him unless you want some good old-fashioned 1950s preaching. Reminds me of going to Mass every time he lectures.
Great teacher - very smart. I did not find that he was a tough grader, if you kept up with the reading. Very fair.
really nice, helpful, fun and interesting...great teacher
harder class for a theology core. quizzes were very easy if you just read the assignments. Tests were all essay and you'll never write an adequate thesis so don't try. Very interesting and informative. Can seem close minded.
Hugely self-satisfied. closed-minded attitude does not foster learning or thought(as a $35k private education should). Incapable of differentiating between opinion and thought, and is also incapable of accepting the possibility that his opinions may be incorrect. So much for Christian Humility.
He is a tough grader, particularly for essays. He wouldn't be my first pick for a CIV seminar teacher. He's arrogant and tries to make theology "cool" which just doesn't work since he's a huge nerd. If you have him GO TO HIM FOR HELP ON ESSAYS. He's glad to help. Not a bad guy, just hard.
His lectures are clear to follow, but its kinda like he is preaching instead of teaching. I hated how he graded my exams, it seemed like I could never say what he wanted, although i went to his office. Some what helpfully, just keep asking the question.
Being a non-religious person, he happens to make the class interesting, but his views are very conservative and sometimes offensive. His tests are id's and essay format which he gives before the test. Lots of reading and hes a very hard grader. Worthwhile class if you want to learn something
Seems nice but is very closed minded and conservative. Teaches Theology as fact and assumes everyone is a staunch Catholic. I feel like I've gone to mass everytime I leave his civ lectures. Pretty boring and a hard grader.

you Gondreau haters are losers! the man is hard but the best! I learned more in this class than any other I've had. he pushes you hard, but he loves teaching and he loves his students. gives very clear lectures, great handouts, signals exactly what he expects for tests. rock on, Dr. G!
He often let's his beliefs cloud the objectivity and truth of lectures. Not a good thing.
A man who is truly passionate about his faith. It would have been nice if he had begun class with prayer. I would highly recommend him to any graduate student.
Very intelligent. Unfortunately, he knows it. Hard-line conservative Catholic--let his students be warned!
I got a C in the class and was never more proud of it. He is very passionate about his faith and does catch his toungue sometimes. Overall he's a grat guy and has a very interesting class. I went to public school and new nothing about theology. After his class I was full. You have to read and pay attention in his class and you'll do fine

Hands down one of the best teachers at Providence College. His Aquinas class was one of the best classes I have ever taken. There is a lot of reading but it's nothing an average student cannot handle. It is true that he is a Traditional Catholic but that is one of the reasons why he is such a great professor.
Holy heck this man was so unhelpful and intimidating. It was like his life mission was to make every quasi-liberal in the class feel like they were condemned to Hell. Plus, he seriously hates women. Have fun with this one -- unless you like to use your faith as a weapon, I would stay away.
Not sure what the other comments are all about. Dr. Gondreau is just doing what should be expected of every Catholic theology professor. Sure he's tough, but this isn't high school you know! He's expected to teach AUTHENTIC Catholic theology, not heresy. PC benefits from scholarly teachers who don't lie but are FAITHFUL to Christ & His Church.
funny guy- overall pretty interesting lectures- however definaltely has his favorites; extremely unfair grader- if you have everything he says in class it is CLEARLY not enough; quizes every class- very dedicated in his work but if your not 100% interested in the material and want more than a C... take a different class
he is one of the meanest teachers i have ever had. makes fun of kids when they speak in class when he should really just be focusing on teaching and helping us. VERY patronizing. has ridiculous standards. flatout mean.
haven't decided what I think of him personally yet- grades seem arbitrary, on exams wants more than he asks for, takes off points without explanation, quizzes every class, wanders off topic frequently, and the notes end up lacking without much relevance to the readings. no clear syllabus- this class only made me think about and fear dying- awful..
Not very helpful, not very clear, not very fun at all. A relatively dry addition to Civ team for theology, and you'll notice a very quick decrease in student participation (whether it's the subject or the teacher, no difference). He needs to learn to motivate the students to even pay attention to his lectures, let alone enjoy them
He is much harder than the other professors because he expects students to write amazing essays than have information and thoughts that haven't been brought up in class, which is especially hard when you are relying on sparknotes. He is also really confusing during lectures and you will have trouble taking notes
Stay as far away from this man as possible. He is extremely conceded and although very intelligent, almost impossible to please. Getting an A on a paper is nearly impossible. Lectures are boring. If you get put in his seminar make up an excuse and GET OUT
Ridiculous professor. Makes the hardest tests and grades them unbelieavably hard. Real cocky, thinks he's the smartest guy in the world so he likes to hear himself talk. DO NOT TAKE.
Dr. Gondreau's class stressed me out for a while, but in the end it was extremely informative and fun. He has a great knowledge of this subject and he wrote the book for the class. Some of the other books were kind of useless. A very fun class.
not an easy grader on papers, i recommend you write about things not talked about in class and that u go see him personally to get extra points for effort. other then that he def. nos his theo. &tries to make it interesting but sometimes when he asks questions its hard to c how they r relevant or what answer he is looking for. def. participate tho
One of few theologians at PC who teaches sound doctrine that is 100% in line with the Magisterium. He makes students realize that we are in a demanding college and not in kindergarten so that we may learn to motivate ourselves and work hard inside and outside of the classroom. Just don't be a stranger! Approach him and ask questions! Learn!
The rigidness of the professor to teach a wide range of ideals and not just his opinion of his views negates any possible learning of the thought process that applies to this class.
I had Dr. Gondreau in the honors Tolkien class with Dr. Barbour. It was a great class, and Dr. Gondreau was a great prof. He has a good sense of humor, and a great knowlege of Tolkien. Most students I know have loved his theology classes as well.
Great teacher. He doesnt mind if you disagree with him he wants to hear your view. He explains things very clearly and his quizzes are not bad. As long as you read the material you will do fine on a quiz. The tests are fair and he is a fair grader. Great teacher
He's a pretty reasonable teacher. easy to joke with if you know how to push his buttons. Very intelligent in regards to theology and has no problem spreading his wisdom to others.
Teaches from a Catholic theological view, which is what is required of all theology professors at PC. He definitely knows his stuff & isn't afraid to share his beliefs with you. Still, he is open to your ideas & questions & he will help you understand why he teaches what he teaches. Gives easy quizzes, reading isn't bad, and tests are fair.
I switched out of my Civ team because of him. If he doesn't like you, class is unbearable. He plays favorites and just talks about his obsession with healthy living. I learned more about theology in high school than I did with him. Also, he is a tough essay grader and has no reason to be since he doesn't even teach english. Terrible man.
He is a good guy but can be a tough grader. He is a bit repetitive on things that he is trying to drive home. He does play favorites and is at times unclear about what he expects on papers. While he is a tough grader, once you figure him out and what he expects, he stays true and you can build on previous work
Worst teacher ever. IF he doesn't like you, you will fail. Tough grader. HIGHLY recommend DO NOT TAKE. he talks about triangles every time and he speaks meaningless informtion
DO NOT TAKE. This man is so difficult and unclear. Doesnt answer questions and talks down to students. And his laugh is a cackle which is very unsettling. If you have him on your civ team, switch out immediately.
Puts students to sleep. My way or the high. If you disagree with him he makes fun of you. Pushed his own view on to students.
Had him for seminar and class all freshman year. Like most teachers here, he is decent/ below average. Hard paper grader, and lectures are confusing and hard to follow but he is a nice guy sorta
I had him for civ lecture&seminar. Definitely the hardest grader on the team. I used his exact sample thesis that he gave us in class for a paper&he still commented that it was vague. His lectures arent bad and hes a good person, but as a teacher it's all about him/his way. VERY condesending. If you read/participate A LOT, he'll like you. Maybe.
Course was interesting, and Gondreau wasn't a terrible person, but he did come off as kind of a know-it-all. Incredibly boring at times, very engaging at others, depended on the topic. REALLY tough grader. I generally get straight A's but I ended up with a B in his class. Quizzes daily but we barely talked about the readings in class.
He comes off as slightly arrogant but as a professor, he's good. He really knows his stuff and he likes hearing questions. He is very traditional (this is a theology class) and some people don't like that about him, but the class is great. Midterm is fine as long as you study. Daily quizzes but as long as you do the reading, they're easy.
I really like him as a professor. He's very passionate about his teachings which makes seminar interesting. We have a quiz every lecture/seminar that are pretty specific, sometimes ill fail even if I did read. Otherwise, I still recommend him he's a super nice guy
super intelligent man
Only C I got in college was in his class. Absolutely horrendous professor that believes his profession is above all. Don't try to argue or dis-agree. His lectures are extremely dry and boring. Tough grader on papers. I strongly suggest you do not take him, if you do he does like teacher pets that praise him and agree with him.
Dr. Gondreau was a great professor to have for civ. His seminar was entertaining and we often got off topic. He is very passionate about his subject, but do not let that scare you off. While he may be forward with his beliefs, he means the best. I would definitely take again. Also, he has written me amazing recommendations for study abroad.
Very nice guy. Knows a ton about theology, history, and philosophy. Pretty much a walking encyclopedia. Seminars are very deep and inspirational, but hard. You will get a ton of readings and writing, but it will make you so much smarter. Overall, he's very nice but extremely challenging.
Loves teacher's pets. Repeat what he says and do what he wants and you will be fine. reading quizes are easy if you do them, his grading is arbitrary. Personally would never take him again just because he is very self righteous and does not understand how anyone could think unlike the church. Also, he can't stop speaking about his "awesome" family
Basically, super nice guy. Will bluntly tell you that you have the wrong answer if it doesn't agree with him.. Goes off on rants, which is nice. Grades essays tough. Will write comments that don't correspond to the grade which is kind of confusing and will only write on the first two pages.... Nice guy kind of annoying though. Not the worst.
I had Dr. Gondreau first semester freshman year for civ. Not the best way to start a college career. He's a tough paper grader and assigns a lot of reading. For his tests he required students to remember and recite entire passages from the illiad, Odyssey and Bible. Some were as long as 20 lines and had tough and forgettable language.
Impossible to get a good grade on a writing assignment in his civ class. Very tough grader. Assigns large amounts of reading and asks specifics on his quizzes. Would not reccomend
Impossible to be specific. Quizzes everyday on readings, tough grader. AVOID
I loved this class, Gondreau is a great teacher and so passionate about everything he teaches. If you pay attention in class and do the readings, you will do well. I am taking another theology class with him this semester and I love it!
Dr. Gondreau is one of the most inspirational men I have ever met. Students who say they should avoid Dr. Gondreau do not know what they are talking about. If you put an hour of time into the readings and truly immerse yourself into what he is teaching, you will succeed. I learned so much about my faith and myself in his class. TAKE HIM.
Gondreau is a wonderful man and teacher who is so passionate about the subject matter. He makes you work for it, but you ultimately learn a lot in his course. Strongly recommend.
Awful. He has good points and arguments to back up his insane catholic views, however he says everything in the most condescending way and acts likes he right and everyone else is wrong. Shuts anyone down right away who challenges him. If wanna a class with not much work take but he is a very hard grader. kinda a mean guy, learn compassion dude.
I had Gondreau for Intro to Aquinas. The class was miserable. Reading every single night with a guarenteed quiz the next day. Hes a nice guy, but his lectures are boring and jokes are so repetitive and simply arent funny. Midterm and Final were difficult.
Gondreau is one of my favorite professors at PC. His lectures and seminars are interesting and livid. He helped me answer a lot of questions about my faith and helped me realize what it really means to be a human. Quizzes and Tests are difficult, essays are tough. Always read and find the underlying meaning to the text.
Me: mostly an A/A- student 4 ref no post on sakai Quizzes 15% of grade: 60-70 are seem to be the class average (it is the only true L you are going to take) Essays were 30% - will NOT screw you over, papers written 1 or 2 nights in advance will get Bs 25% is participation - makes notes when you talk (gives benefit of the doubt) nice man, tough
Worst professor I've ever had and one of the most unpleasant people I've ever met. If you are a person with a heart and a brain you will be deeply offended by his disgusting catholic rants every single class. Lives in his own world, does not allow argument from students. If you are left of center, noncatholic, or a nice person, this class is hell.
It all comes down to your midterm and final. If you do all the reading and take good notes youll be set. He is a pretty tough grader but he really loves what hes teaching and is a good guy.
Dr. Gondreau likes to assign a good amount of reading for each class. Every class there is a quiz to test you on what you read. His lectures are repetitive and honestly boring. Most of his classes are in the afternoon and he puts you right to sleep. He gives some good one liners to think about but nothing special. Always has an oral final.
Don not take this Professor. He is the absolute worst professor at pc. He would regularly laugh and accuse students of heresy in class if they gave a wrong answer. Final was a 1-on-1 15 minute oral exam and it was brutal. You have to participate in lecture and do the reading because theres a quiz every class. Worst professor do not take him!!
The simple fact is that many people on here dislike Dr. Gondreau for his passion in a subject area that contradicts the way they live their lives. At the end of the day, PC is a Catholic college. If you take a theology course at a CATHOLIC school on a CATHOLIC saint you're going to get CATHOLIC doctrine and nobody knows it better than him.
NEVER take a class with him. He appears nice at first but don't be fooled. The work itself is not difficult, but there is a lot to do to maintain a good grade. but he is so close minded as a person that if you provide any differing view from his, you'll do poorly in his class. even telling him what he wants to hear may not be enough. THE WORSTEVER
Paul is pretty generic when it comes to college professors. He gives you a lot of work and expects you to do it. That doesn't mean he's a bad teacher, but after a while, the work gets very annoying. Especially when all he assigns is long readings that have nothing to do with what we are learning - and that's pretty much all we did.
I have mixed emotions about Dr. Gondreau. He is a smart guy with insightful lectures but the readings have nothing to do with what we learn in class that day. There's always a one question quiz for a 30 page reading so you either know it or you don't. However I actually learned something on this class. I recommend him if youre up to the challenge.
Professor Gondreau is very nice. However, your grade is only based on the midterm, final and the in-class quizzes you take before every class on the reading. The quizzes are weighted lightly but if you read you normally get above a 90. The final was an oral exam. He never posted any of the grades in Sakai so you just never knew your grade. ever.
Professor Gondreau is a really nice guy and I found his theology class on marriage interesting. The only thing I would warn incoming students about is the amount of reading and homework we had to do, and there would be quizzes on the readings. If you do the readings, you should be fine!
His lectures were tough to follow, and he is not very accessible outside of class - his office hours were by appointment only, which was annoying. He was a tough grader, and if you want an A you need to work very hard. He's nice, and if you participate a lot in seminar he will give you a good grade on that. He takes notes every time you talk.
He had an extremely inappropriate final where we had a one-on-one meeting in his office. It began by him asking if I had a boyfriend, then when I said yes, he pretended to be him and asked me hypothetical questions including "what would you say if I asked you to have premarital sex with me and move in with me." Really strange. Strict outdated views
Do not take his class! I am trying to save you, he is a horrible teacher and tests are impossible. He gives horrible lectures and makes the course harder than it needs to be. Do not recommend at all!!!
Really nice guy but seminar was definitely tough, and it's difficult to earn a good grade, especially compared to other professors for dwc102. His lectures were decent but not the most engaging. Could be worse, could be better.
Out of my team, he was the best but still not good at all. Quizzes and Writing Prompts every seminar. No mid-term term which was nice and seminar went by fast but was not interested in what you had to say if it wasn't right. clearly had favorites. Lectures by him and all of the professors were not great. Not the worst options but def not the best
Prof. Gondreau was the best to have for seminar out of my team, and he was by far the nicest out of the 3 as well. His quizzes and writing prompts were tricky even if you did read what was required for class, however he really likes participation and you are able to salvage your grade as long as you are present in the conversation.
Very challenging for first semester freshman course but if you read and take good lecture notes you should be fine
Lectures can be tough to follow, but the professor is nice and gives good seminar grades for participation. Textbook is optional - I found unstuck study and ChatGPT really helpful for acing the tough exams.
I wasn't religious before this class, but now i pray every night for a good grade in this class. He is such a tough grader who doesn't believe in 100s (he told us straight up). Be prepared to read and take notes on EVERYTHING you read. Quizzes every. single. class. they count for attendance. I'm depressed now.
Not a good teacher at all. Can't grade things normally
Not a bad dude, but virtually impossible to get an A. So knowledgeable abt subject expects u to b on that level. Doesn't give feedback, j marks u down. 70% exams, 20% quizzes, quiz every class never MC always written specific questions. Doesn't give higher than 95s anything, so many easier teachers for subject, hardest out of 200 level Theology
THANK GOD he wasn't my seminar prof. His lectures were so boring and he's hard to listen to. Also quite judgy and infamously makes fun of Cranston RI every semester (i'm not even from there it's just really weird the way he does it)
Wasn't crazy about the actual content of the class, but wow, Dr. Gondreau just made it so much worse. Talks about the same thing every class, was sarcastic to people asking questions, and really only liked the very religious people in the class. Open ended quiz almost every class, 70% of grade is exams, just do NOT take this class.
