Amazing teacher (best I have had so far at IU). Makes the material interesting, offers a little extra credit, gives out candy occassionally. If you don't do well in the class it's because you aren't showing up to class.
He's a fair teacher, and if you put in the effort, you'll do fine. I hardly studied at all and I missed a couple of classes and was getting a 53, and he doesn't curve. I got lots of help from him and ended up with a C+, with help from the book. So if you're looking for a fair teacher, I'd say he's about as fair as it gets in terms of effort.
Genuinely cares about his students and wants them to do well. Fair teacher. Would recommend
There is no other professor like him. If he sees that you have put in some effort, he will try everything in his ability to make sure that you understand the material. HE CARES ABOUT HIS STUDENTS. HE DOES NOT CURVE!!! THAT'S A GOOD THING SOMETIMES.
Great examples that simplify the material. Very straightforward class. The only time I had trouble was when I didn't pay attention and took bad notes. Even then, though, it's not hard to find help.
He is an awesome teacher, i recommend you take his class!! His test are very fair and CL is worth more in his class than other econ classes!!! He also gives easy extra credit, just show up to his class!!
He is very clear and is very willing to help. He slows down when he know students are having trouble. My only problem with him was that he didn't offer CL sessions when I was in the class, but that may have changed now.
I have had Prof. Graf for micro & macro and have enjoyed both classes. His classes stay pretty interesting, make sure you go to get the notes, because that is 90% of the test. Class doesn't seem hard, but it is difficult to get an A.
You can tell that he is a genuine person that does really care about his students. His personality is very quirky and that makes the classes much less boring. I find myself laughing at his jokes and side comments at least once every class. Good guy.
Cool professor, kinda funny too. Class isn't that hard if you try a little.
Professor Graf is awesome. This class is not hard, as the people before me seem to have thought. I took Self for micro (he was awful) and now macro is so easy! If you read through the stuff in the book, all the concepts make sense. And he's quirky which makes class entertaining.
Very fair and straightforward class. Lectures can be bit confusing as Graf tends to go on a number of tangents during lectures. As entertaining as that is, it doesn't really help learn the material. The powerpoints are really the key to success. The tests are reasonable and he offers about 3% extra credit and CL counts for 10% of the class.
He is a great professor. I enjoyed his Macro class very much. While I have heard some reports of his Microecon class being subpar, that is not the case in his Macroecon class. He explains material very well and makes concepts relevant through examples. The tests are not tricky or impossible like many ECON tests.I would recommend him highly.
Prof. Graf's micro class is very straightforward. If you use CL and MyEconLab you will do well on the exams. The tests are directly related to class material. There are a lot of opportunities to get help and a lot of good study resources given to you. Go to class for extra credit points. Professor Graf is nice and genuinely cares about students.
if u just want an easy A,take his class,or you'd better reconsider cuz he knows little about the material.
Probably one of the best profs in the econ department. Offers a lot of extra credit and tells corny jokes. However, he can be a little confusing sometimes, so make sure that you read the book carefully and prepare from that. And do CL!
Looks like Seinfeld but knows what he's talking about. Kind've a nerd but explains concepts clearly enough and holds review sessions that are helpful before each test. I suggest taking Graf because if not you're stuck with Professor Self which is the worst teacher for econ at IU
Subtleties
good enough
Explains the material clearly and is relatively interesting. The class wasn't terribly hard.
He is a nice guy, just a difficult class. It helps to read the book because sometimes in lecture he overcomplicates things a bit. I would recommend him though.
The material is very difficult, but he does his best to make it manageable. He is understanding on grades too
This class is tough but professor Graf does a good job in explaining the material. He's def better than the other e201 professors at IU. Sometimes his lame jokes are funny and he's very passionate about econ. Hard class but good prof.
From what I've heard, he's probably the best E201 teacher to take. His tests are fair as long as you do your online quizzes and study. Gives easy extra credit opportunities if you come to class, but attendance isn't mandatory. Really helpful if you go in for office hours, and will bump your grade up if you're boarder-line and have gone in for help
Graf is a great professor and really knows what he's talking about, but the material is just difficult. I feel like it would be more manageable if the class wasn't given in the form of a giant 300-person lecture.
He's cool in class, very goofy, but don't be fooled by this-- he's not very understanding of things, ie. HW is due before class starts on the dot. If class starts at 3 and you turn it in at 3:01 (for WHATEVER reason) he'll take it but when you they come back graded he adds a little note saying its a 0 bc it was "late". Also goes way off topic ALOT.
He's a nice guy, but the material is incredibly difficult when it gets down to it. Tests are the most difficult ones I've yet encountered at IU - I never found the most efficient way to study for them. MyEconLab is not the way to go, I can tell you that much. His office hours didn't do much for me, he wasn't very helpful.
Prof Graf is as helpful as any you will find, but at the end of the day no teacher can make broad concepts "easy." Don't look at the 200 level, look at yourself. If you are serious and well organized, you will have no problem with the course.I took the online hybrid and only attended class on exam days and had more than enough resources to succeed.
Graf was a great professor and always made the information fun and easy to understand
He's alright, nothing great. Learnt more about Econ in highschool.
good.
Good professor. Keeps things entertaining in class. Draws extensions of microeconomic principles to college life. WARNING: You'll probably have to take weekly quizzes on MyEconLab. Don't take these lightly. Doing practice problems in the resources section helps better than reading the textbook, I've found. Grind it out and you can pull an A.
He's a great professor. Helpful, enthusiastic about the subject, and funny. Keeps you entertained and intrigued. He is happy to explain things many times if you truly don't understand.
Graf is very energetic and enthusiastic about the material which makes the class enjoyable. It is ECON so the material is not going to be easy, but with the amount of help and study materials available the class is structured to benefit you if you put in the work. I would definitely recommend Graf
Professor Graf is funny and obviously knows what he's talking about. He's passionate about the subject. He could be more clear in his explanations BUT he always asks if there are questions. Do the quizzes online but more importantly, the study plan online. Read and go to class and you can succeed.
I took this class online. The lectures were condensed and easy to undertand. It was great how you could rewatch anything you needed to. This class is tough so youre gonna have to read the textbook thoroughy and use all of the resources on MyEconLab. Dont slack off in this course, its difficult but doable if you stick with it.
Professor graf is very passionate and funny in class. Love his class very much.
Currently 40 minutes into lecture, we have not yet approached relevant material, he's spent 75% of the time forcing jokes/attempting to be popular, and we've taken 3 mandatory opinionated polls. You don't have much of a choice of Macro professors, but if you're the kind of person that comes to class to learn, you will hate this guy.
He spent half the time telling us what we were gonna study on a particular day rather than actually studying. Apart from that he tried waaaaay too hard to be funny instead of putting the same effort into making his subject matter easy to understand. If you're the kind of person who goes to class to learn you'll hate him.
Graf is a great person, but he actually is not good at teaching and explaining the material. Word on the street is that he is better than self, and those are the only two options so I'd pick Graf, but just know you will have to put in a lot of effort.
Nice guy but a poor teacher. Class notes were useless. I had to use the textbook more in this class than any other in order to teach myself the material. Test questions were extremely difficult/wordy and very different from the homework. Tests written to feel like a "weed out" class. Very frustrating class.
I took the summer class and it was a bad decision. I think I would have done better if this was during the semester. I got my first ever C in this class. The tests were very difficult and it seemed like he wanted his tests to be a big secret and not give any hints on what to study. Questions are very tricky on tests. I say avoid
Graf is very passionate with what he is teaching, you would definitely learn a lot from his class. Dont miss any lecture and do what the class is asked for, studyplans and quizzes--there are extra credits built in. I took his E202 as well and I got an A.
I really likes Graf a lot. He genuinely takes the time to make sure no one has questions and he's more than happy to explain. He really cares about his students and made Econ easier for me. Online quizzes were hard but the tests weren't too bad.
Graf is a great teacher. He explains things well and is super helpful during his office hours. Economics will always be a tough class no matter who the teacher is, but he definitely makes it easier. Definitely recommend!
Professor Graf was a really nice guy. He was pretty funny and always made sure he answered any questions students had. There are clicker questions every day so you really can't miss class because they're a big part of your grade. In-class group work was annoying. You can't just listen to his lectures and do well on the tests, you need to read.
He talks unrelated things on the class. Going to his class is useless, you need to read by yourself. His book which is required by his class is not a very helpful and clear book. He has quiz every week and not easy at all. Just don't take his class.
Graf is my favorite professor that I've had. He's funny and he really wants you to pass. He offers a ridiculous amount of extra credit and a bunch of points outside of tests. Basically if you do poorly its your own fault. Make sure you go to lectures because he has clicker questions everyday. Overall great professor.
Paul Graf is a good professor, but if you don't want to pay to many focusing on this class, do not choose it, the textbook in this class will be very expensive and useless, but it's required, students need to attend class every time and they will have the little quiz every time, there're too many things you need to do in this class, waste lot time.
The lectures he gives are not relevant to the material at all. Nothing in his lecture appears on the quizzes. The book/myeconlab will be your best friend.
If you're faced with Self, Olson or Graf - go w/ Graf. I had Olsen before and dropped the class b/c the only grades were tests. With Graf I'm succeeding b/c he gives extra credit for going to CL, clicker points for going to class, and quiz points. His tests are fair and he is a nice guy. Independent studying will get you far, extra credit adds up!
Graf is a professor who really cares. However, his lectures can go off topic, and the book, which is required, can be difficult to read, and sometimes not that helpful. His tests are hard. Weekly quizzes, and clickers in every class. Since the material is challenging, you really have to work for it in his class
Professor Graf was alright. It is definitely helpful to read before class and to pay attention in class. Even with all of that, it is going to be hard to get above a B in the class as his tests (they're departmental tests) are hard even though he tries his best to prepare students. Out of all the econ profs, he probably is one of the better ones
Graf is a bit of a goofball, sitting in class feels like watching a weird econ sitcom, but worst of all you're being forced to do it since he's the only e201 prof w/ mandatory attendance. Aside from disliking lecture, I found this class very easy. Attend, do well on the the few tests that there are, take online quizzes, and you'll probably get an A
He gets way too off topic in class so we rarely got through the material we were supposed to in class- usually he would speed through the last 30 minutes of class (in which most of the complicated material is) so you don't actually retain that much from class. I had to teach myself most of the concepts using the book.
This guy flat out doesn't teach. His exam 2 average was 62% and the final average was 59%. Doesn't curve. He spends more time talking about learning objectives than actually teaching. He also has stupid group projects. Unsuccessfully tries to teach Econ with a powerpoint. He has clicker questions so you have to go even thou it's pointless.
Nice guy, class wasn't terribly difficult. 3 relatively straightforward MC exams that make up 70% of grade. Clicker points every class & an online quiz due every Friday. Have to put in time to understand the ideas, don't expect to succeed if you don't. His lectures aren't great, read the book and watch Econ videos to grasp the concepts. Its doable
Professor Graf is a really good instructor. He makes a great effort to make everyone in his classes successful despite their large sizes. Really knows what he is talking about. Presents material well, however the exams are difficult. Expect low averages on exams but it can be made up with some extra credit
solid choice for a macroecon teacher. Very reasonable and is there for students when they need him. Going to class is especially important for this course.
As a guy, I life Professor Graf. He's goofy, funny, and clearly knows what he's talking about. Almost too much though. He speeds through lectures as if you're supposed to understand everything at the drop of a hat. 2nd test was impossible with no curve and overall his lectures are kind of pointless. Hated this class overall, but as a guy, he's cool
Paul's lectures are difficult to understand and often overlooked/sped through due to his side comments. At least S201 is a small class.
Large class. Clickers daily. Quizzes weekly. Group projects monthly. Exams every other month. Class was long, boring, and often not helpful when compared to the book.
Professor Graf is a good teacher but he doesn't always go through the material thoroughly. He is interesting but sometimes you can't understand the entire concept. You have weekly quizzes and optional discussions you can go to. He is helpful if you go to office hours. 3 exams that are about 70 percent of your grade.
Graf is a fair professor in terms of his exams. However, if you are not willing to put in the time for this class then your grade will suffer. The worst part of this class for me was group projects because you are not allowed to pick, and my group was incompetent. Reading the book and doing Myeconlab before exams is extremely helpful.
Interesting lecture, no curve for the exams, but you can earn extra credits.
Professor Graf is so powerful that has the ability to delete the review here. But anyway, I still gonna say that his lecture is just mean to make you confuse. He frequently talks about not relative stuff in the lecture, and I do not understand why he always complete his sentence without breaks. Final grade score can replace the test 1 and 2.
If you go to class and simply fill out his redacted notes (which include 90% of the material already) you'll do great. He gives so much extra credit that you'd have to try not to get a good grade. He does get off topic on lectures sometimes but stick to the notes and you're fine. The book is extremely helpful even though I only read before tests.
I got a B in this course, but could just as easily received an A. Tests are 70% of grade, there is grade replacement for your prior tests if you have a high final grade and attend most of the classes, do most webwork, etc. He is hilarious and easy to pay attention to. You should make friends for clicker questions, webwork, and studying. Book is meh
For Econ he's a great professor to have! At the beginning of the course he gives you a chance to get extra credit to provide any cushion that you need. Make sure you understand the material early on so you don't get behind.
Gives lots of extra credit at beginning of semester-take advantage. Very good teacher, come to class and do some studying before tests and you'll be fine. Not a difficult class and Graf is an excellent teacher. I plan on taking his section for E202 also.
Graf is hands down the best e201 professor at IU. He gives so much extra credit at the beginning of the semester, so be sure to take advantage of that because it will act as a cushion once the test grades go in. Honestly, if you show up to every class and start studying for tests a week before the test, this class will be an easy B+.
Only reason to go to lectures is for extra credit. The weekly quizzes he assigns have nothing to do with the lectures. The only positive thing I have to say about this man is that he's funny and gives extra credit, which is the only reason I passed.
His lectures made things way more confusing then they needed to be, but hit so much material I can't imagine how behind I would've been if I'd skipped class. The final is killer, so pad your grade as much as you can early on
Professor Graf is probably the best econ teacher at IU. He makes things super simple and was a lot easier to follow than Professor Self. I have been to his office hours a handful of times and those are super helpful. He is a great teacher and takes time to make sure his students are following along and getting all the notes.
Graf is amazing professor. I couldn't imagine taking E201 with any other prof. I'm planning on taking him for E202. He makes the class enjoyable to attend, and he gives out a ton of extra credit. There are weekly online quizzes that can be a pain, but as long as you pay attention in class you'll be fine. Attendance is also mandatory in class.
Prof. Graf is a good professor teaching a bad subject. He gives a good amount of extra credit and tries to make lectures interesting. Be prepared to spend a good amount of time on readings, quizzes, study plans, etc.
He can come off a little intimidating but once you go see him in office hours, he is super friendly! I'm taking him again for Macro and would highly recommend, he's fantastic. He makes econ interesting and he gives really good real life examples. In his office hours, he helps a lot and explains everything very in depth. He is also really funny!
He is an amazing prof. He is very knowledgable and really cares if you understand the material. I would highly recommend going to office hours. Going to class is very important because he takes attendance and uses top hat to ask questions during lecture. This class is difficult but if you are willing to put in the work you can get a good grade.
Graf is a great man and great professor. He really knows his stuff and is always willing to answer questions. He makes a somewhat boring and dry subject interesting and for the most part engaging. His tests are difficult, especially the final.
Great professor but hard class regardless of who teaches.
This had to have been one of the hardest courses Ive taken. Econ is just something you get, or dont get. However, Graf is one amazing guy. Hes truly passionate about economics. Dont take EC for granted. GO TO CLASS. Go to CL!!! He doesnt want you to fail and he knows the material is hard. You gotta work your ass off for a C.
He's a quirky professor whose lectures are probably the most interesting out of any of the other econ classes. He recognizes the class is challenging, so he gives out lots of extra credit at the beginning and some at the end of the semester. Take advantage of this. Study a week in advance for the exams. Go to class. And a B at the least is possible
Great professor, awesome personality. Only problem I faced was that his weekly quizzes were a thousand times harder than what we taught in class. Be prepared to read for this class.
I am preparing the Economics part of the CFA exam. That makes me realize how helpful Professor Graf is. I still can remember the knowledge he taught even two years passed.
Professor Graf is probably one of the best professors I had he is caring and always willing to help the student out. E202 is a pretty hard course if you take it on campus so if you get stuck go to his office hours it will help a lot!
Taking Paul Graf for E201 and E202 is a game changer. I recommend him to all my friends. In what other class can you have a 85% exam average and end up with a solid A in the class? Get your TopHat points, go to CL, and do the extra credit for an easy 10% boost to your grade. On top of that, he's probably the most entertaining prof.
Graf is a pretty good teacher, but economics is so confusing and difficult and the wording of his tests is very confusing
Although Intro to Macro is a difficult course, I think Professor Graf did a pretty good job teaching it. Be prepared to work hard each week on the material, and I suggest you do all the extra credit available to get the highest grade possible. I suggest sitting in the laptop section in the classroom so you can type into the redacted notes.
Required quizzes every week that do not match lecture notes. Tests are designed and worded not to grade your understanding but to give you every possible answer as an option that might trick you. Being that this is an intro class and required for some students who do not wish to be econ majors it should not be this difficult!
While he really knows his material and tries to make it interesting, his lectures are a bit long winded and confusing. The class lacks organization even though he spends the first two whole weeks going over course logistics. His tests aren't terrible, but he never curves. Overall, Graf is not a bad prof, but he's definitely not for everyone.
Every week there are at home quizzes that cover the weeks material gone over in class. These quizzes are extremely hard and hardly relate to what you learned in class. He gives out a bunch of extra credit- make sure to do it all. As the class goes along, it consistently gets harder and harder, so be prepared for your grade to keep dropping.
The class is really not too bad, if you read the textbook along with the lectures and do some practice. Graf is a really good guy who truly cares about his students, and because of this he gives a lot of extra credit.
I got a D test 1. He took the time during office hours to talk me through my options and he ended up recommending I stay in the course. Did well. Lots of EC helped me but not all econ professors give that. His lectures, while plentiful, aren't dry even though he teaches economics. Lots of work but that is the nature of the class. Graf is the man!
Overall Graf is a good teacher for micro economics. He offers some extra credit, but expect lots of reading, weekly quizzes, and difficult exams. I would recommend him just because I have heard he is one of the better micro teachers and is very willing to help struggling students. His classes are huge and can be boring but is important to read.
Prof. Graf is one of the harder micro profs, but he is also the best. You will learn so much from his class and he relates micro to your everyday life. He makes the course worth taking. He offers a ton of extra credit to balance out bad exam scores and also multiple attempts to take the weekly quizzes. Highly recommend and overall great guy.
Took Paul Graf for Micro + Macro, and he is a phenomenal teacher. Although these courses are difficult, Graf truly does care about his students and wants them to succeed. He was always able to help me understand the material, and pushed students to do their best with a challenging concept. Easily my favorite teacher on this campus, and a great guy
Wasted a ton of class time repeating announcements every class, rushed lectures and sometimes doesnt finish. Have fun doing canvas lectures but on a 3rd party site you have to pay for, and using a different garbage online textbook for quizzes. Also loves to write test questions to confuse you instead of test you. Pretty bad, avoid this man
So Econ is not my thing (social studies ed major so more of a history person) and I took this class spring 2020 (covid), and Prof. Graf handled everything beautifully. Cares a ton about his students, lectures are funny (lots of dry humor), very good at using real life examples. Gives an insane amount of EC, use it. Only reason I passed was the EC
Paul Graf is a solid choice for macroeconomics. He really cares about the classroom environment and wants students to get the most out of the class. His tests can be tough but he gives a lot of extra credit. Lectures are kind of dry but the subject matter is interesting.
Take good notes. Do the extra credit. Listen to the man. Ace the tests. As simple as that.
Professor Graf was such an awesome professor. Yes, the content is difficult, but he gives you so many opportunities for extra help and extra credit. Take advantage of the multitude of resources he gives you such as the lecture videos, textbook, and CL sessions. Exams were tough, but it all works out in the end.
Literally everyone in the class says "Love you professor Graf" before leaving the zoom meetings. He always has your back and I honestly dont know what happened in this class. He also offers so much easy extra credit. Love that man.
Offers a lot of Extra Credit for you too keep your grade up, he gave us about 50 points which is a letter grade bump in the class. You will need to read the Modules before the lecture as the lecture is mainly used for review and announcements. The test were kind of hard but if you study you'll be good. Overall, he really cares about his class!
Professor Graf is an incredibly knowledgeable and kind professor. He cares about his students and their progress in the class. He gives a lot of extra credit in the beginning and end of the course. The tests can be challenging, so its important to read up and thoroughly prepare for them. The textbook is a bit confusing and at times contradicting.
Prof Graf was one of the best professors I could've had for micro. Though his lectures were usually pretty dry, he definitely made a great effort to use personal anecdotes and examples to make things much more interesting. He gives a lot of extra credit. Tests are pretty difficult though, so I would review your Canvas quizzes.
I enjoyed Graf. He always had good lectures, made them fun, and knew what he was talking about. He cared about his students. Some of the content was boring a lot of the time, but he had an enthusiasm for econ that made it more fun for the students.
Professor Graf includes content in his tests that are not presented in lecture or in homework.
Although Prof. Graf is nice, this class was beyond frustrating. Please don't be fooled by all of the good reviews. His tests are extremely hard and there is often material on exams that were never covered in class or practice problems. He does offer extra credit, but not enough to save your grade. Don't take this class, it's not worth it.
Prof. Graf is an all-around good guy; however, is exams are very challenging and do include information that is not mentioned in class. He does offer a good amount of extra credit that I would fully utilize to help your grade in the long run. Definitely will have to put in a good amount of work to obtain an A.
I loved economics with Professor Graf. His lectures are interesting and challenging at times but he takes time to answer questions and truly wants his students to succeed. He did a great job teaching a brand new course and the material went together well. I would highly recommend him for anyone looking to take B 252. Great is an understatement!
Great teacher, although my learning style did not go with his teaching. I struggled with first test, be sure to pay attention and know your stuff. No complaints about the teacher, he does a great job and gave 50 points of EC, or two letter grades. Definitley saved me. Haven't struggled with a class as much as this one, but just challenging material
Professor Graf really cares about his students and takes time to answers tons of questions during class. He also gives an abundant amount of extra credit which really helped me because the class is very difficult. Tests are hard, and his lectures can be hard to follow. However, really enjoyed him as a professor.
take econ with him the extra credit really helps your grade I ended up with an A and I struggled with ap macro in high school. I learned a lot since he has tutoring sessions outside of class. gives practice exams to help prepare that are very helpful. definitely have to work for your grade it's not easy but he makes the best of it.
Very nice professor who truly cares a lot about his students. He took a lot of time to explain assignments and was willing to do whatever it takes to help students succeed. He gave a ton of extra credit which was great. The exams seemed a lot more difficult than what we did and class and in comparison to the practice exams.
Prof. Graf is a caring professor and knowledgeable in his field. His lectures would often go on tangents though. He seems to genuinely care about his students (not all profs do) and wants students to be successful. His class offers more extra credit opportunities than most classes.
Super sweet and caring. Writes his own textbook (it explains things rly well tbh; just super long chapters). Lot of small assignments like attendance, weekly quizzes but the major points are from exams (all b251/252 classes are like that tho). Talk to him outside of class, he logs all student encounters and it def helps in the long run.
He really knowns what he's doing and he definitely will make you laugh mid lecture while talking about marginal analysis and cost.
Easily the best professor for b251. He gives an insane amount of extra credit.
Prof. Graf is one of the harder B251 professors, but he is aware of it. He acknowledges that it is more difficult and provides extra credit opportunities to make up for it. Attendance is mandatory and you receive points for it. Though the class is tough he will make you laugh and keep the lectures laid back while still keeping it productive.
Professor Graf was easily my favorite teacher this semester. He is an awesome teacher, makes all the assignments extremely clear. Gives a ton of extra credit.
All B251 professors have their pros and cons. Professor Graf's biggest pros are that he gives a lot of extra credit, and you will learn more than you will with other professors for this course. The consequence of learning more is that the exams are harder. But again the extra credit involved will help you if you mess up on an exam.
Pretty much universally accepted as the best B251 professor by far. A lot of that is because of the ridiculous amount of extra credit he gives. I believe the course was out of around 500 total points, and homie gave us almost 50 points of extra credit total. For the content, its basically just AP Micro if you took that in high school.
Good professor overall. Lectures can be dry, but he's funny and actually cares about students. You have to read the textbook outside of class to really do well but he also gives a lot of extra credit. Class isn't too difficult if you show up and do the work, I would say the tests are very doable just from reading the book.
The material itself in the course isn't super challenging but he presents it in a very boring way. A lot of extra credit is provided in the class, but that is because he barely curves the tests, even when the class average was very low. The tests are very difficult because he does not provide good resources for studying.
Econ is hard for some, but Paul does everything possible to give students the best scores. Offers a mountain of extra credit if you attend and participate. Lectures can be long, but he is good at teaching difficult concepts. He is available for office hours and is there to help. If you attend class and study, it should be an easy A.
He gave a ton of extra credit scores so no need to be worried if you did all of them. Moreover, his lecture is very interesting and funny helping students felt comfortable in his class. However, his test is very difficult and he gave limited practice tests. It hard to get a high score, but if you worked extremely hard, you could make it.
Absolutely loved Mr. Graf. Really cares about his students and is very passionate about what he does. He gives out extra credit like it's candy.
Not an exceptional professor by any means. High school economics teachers are much more capable than professor Graf. However, the class is extremely easy. To get less than an A in B251 with Graf is a challenge I didn't attend class the whole semester, did well on tests and did extra credit outside of attendance. Finished with a 99.
Professor Graf is hands down the best Econ Professor ever. He gives so much extra credit that it is truly hard to fail his class. Tests can be difficult but if you go to class, and do the quizzes, you should be fine. Do not miss any extra credit, you will need it in the end. If you really want to learn Econ and get a good grade, enrol in his class.
Boring and practice exams are nothing like the test.
Professor Graf is a great professor! His classes are tough but he gives out so much extra credit it makes up for it. Also if you go to office hours and get to know him he is more than willing to round your grade for you.
Professor Graf is a really caring professor who wants to see his students succeed. He is more than willing to offer over SEVEN PERCENT of extra credit, which can be earned by doing just a little bit extra. The CL sessions he holds don't seem to be too helpful, but he is very good at explaining concepts and tough material. 12/10. Comedian too.
Graf is interesting in lecture and gives plenty of extra credit to help you succeed. Attendance is required but you won't find a much better lecturer in the ECON department.
Professor Graf is a pretty good lecturer and has a good understanding of the class. The actual lectures are arguably a bit confusing if you don't look at the material beforehand. Paul balances extra credit with exam difficulty, so you should be able to pass if you show up to class and/or CL sessions.
He is an engaging professor making class materials interesting. Graf tended to run out of time and couldn't finish lecture notes. Instead, he sent out completed notes after class. Tests are difficult, but if you go to class, do quizzes, and read the textbook, you'll be fine. Compared to other professors, he is one of the best.
A MUST HAVE PROFESSOR! Professor Graf is truly a great professor. If you show up to class, go to CL sessions and take notes, you will get the grade you deserve. I am not saying this class was easy by any means. Sometimes the tests felt like they were nearly impossible but if you do all the extra credit he gives you, you will do just fine.
Professor Graf really makes understanding economics easy with entertaining and substantive lectures. The only parts I didn't like about his class came purely from the large class size and already having a microeconomic background. Overall, an easy class as long as you take time outside of class to understand the material more thoroughly. Great Prof
Professor Graf is super kind, offers a lot of extra credit, and is always willing to help. CL sessions were really helpful. Personally I struggle a lot with macro, and he was always willing to sit and work with me. It's hard to do badly in a class with a Professor that cares so much about his students. Definitely recommend!
To all the freshman trying to get into Kelley don't underestimate this class. Professor Graf is a funny, knowledgeable man but the departmental exams will haunt your dreams. If you're reading this and have/plan to copy off of your friends' weekly quizzes you'll likely contribute to SPEA's increased enrollment for next year. Good luck :).
I am a Junior now and took Professor Graf first semester of my freshman year for Econ. To date, he may still be my favorite professor. His mix of quality lecturing and humor along with true care for students he was teaching created a great environment for learning. I absolutely highly recommend taking him, specifically for 251.
Graf gives super difficult tests, but he also gives a lot of extra credit that helps to offset the tests. Make sure to take advantage of all the extra credit you can. It was evident that Graf is super passionate about econ and wants to instill that in his students. His lectures are decent but cover a lot of material in a short amount of time.
He is very passionate about the subject and gives tons of extra credit. This is one of my favorite classes. Extremely respectful, approachable, and loved by his students
This is the best econ professor. Don't get me wrong, B251 is a difficult class, very content heavy but I couldn't have done it without Graf. His lectures are amazing and interesting. Try not to skip too many classes. There's 3 exams throughout class. Make sure to study and get all the extra credit that you can.
An all around really great teacher. You can tell he really wants you to succeed but also makes sure you are learning as much as you can. Such a great guy!
Professor Graf went above and beyond to keep my class engaged during lectures. You could tell he genuinely wanted his students to succeed which is why he gave a lot of extra credit. The material could be a bit challenging at times but he always gave us a lot of resources to use to practice before tests.
Prof. Graf was really good all around. Lectures were great and he is passionate about economics, can be funny too. Tests are tough and not usually curved but extra credit is offered to make up for it, through TopHat and CL Sessions. Many practice quizzes and resources available for studying. Put in enough time and effort and 251 will be manageable.
3 exams in the class, lots of extra credit. I finished with a 95.48 and had an 83% average on exams. He doesn't curve but he sometimes tosses out a couple questions. I did all the EC. I would only study the day or two before and prioritize Top Hat (the textbook). The CTS econ review sessions are helpful too. Overall, very doable class if you study.
Very good guy and seems enthusiastic about what he does. Gives out extra credit like candy so get as much as you can, it'll help if you bomb one of the 3 exams. Lectures can become boring and it's easy to lose focus but he does his best to keep everyone engaged so just focus in for the class period and you will do great!
One of the best professors I took this sem. Graf gives a lot of extra credit and does not take it for granted. I did all the extra credit and it helped save me from stress when it came to the final for the class. If you took AP macro/micro in hs, this class would be relatively easy. Pay attention during the lectures and always ask questions.
Professor Graf genuinely enjoys teaching and loves economics. His lectures are infused with helpful examples and sarcastic humor. He is my favorite professor this semester, and I admire his dedication to fairness for all his students. Exams are difficult, but if you attend lectures and complete homework, you'll be fine! Highly recommend!
He is decent at teaching the material but he is not understanding at all. Will not budge to fix grades even when the problems begin and end with himself.
You NEED him for Econ. Do not take anyone else. He gives so much extra credit and is a very good lecturer. The quizzes are very hard, but you get two attempts and see your answers after the second, which other teachers do not do. He is super nice and helpful.
Prof Graf is great. His tests are difficult so be sure to read the textbook and take advantage of every practice resource. CTS review sessions are also good. He gives A TON of extra credit so it makes up for the hard tests. Go to class to get the participation. He is caring, funny, and fair.
Wierd guy, likes to teach the subject tho. Got to study really really hard for the tests to do good. Pretty easy to get a 3.0 or better.
Mans gave me a teapot. Also got so much extra credit, I ended Econ with a 103%
I almost never know what is going on during Graf's lectures or exams, but he gives out so much extra credit that you can bomb a few assignments and still do well. Complete every extra credit assignment, and you'll likely have a 100 going into the final. Overall, he's a fun and understanding professor.
Great lecturer if you attend every class. No reason to look at textbook he goes over all of it in class and always was very kind to all students. Definitely take him if you can for B251 you won't regret it.
Graf is an amazing lecturer and I enjoyed his class. Some concepts can be boring but he acknowledges this and does his best to get through it. He always engages with students and promotes discussion. He also gives quite a bit of extra credit, though exams can be a bit tough. I had never taken a real econ course before this and got an A just fine.
The professor is great, he is trying his best to give extra credits. But the materials, Econ, is little bit hard for me.
He was fine. Find friends in the class for help and with different assignments. Going to class helps and actively taking notes. This class was harder than B251
Graf was a good teacher. I really liked his class and the fact that he offers so many extra credit opportunities, which if you can you should do them all! The only difficult part was that there is just so much content to go over it can feel like an extremely large workload when reviewing. He is the best economics teacher you will be able to take.
Although Graf's not lenient when it comes to missed deadlines, he offers A LOT of extra credit and will bump your grade up at the end of the semester if you're close enough to the next letter without you having to reach out to him. However, attendance is graded. Nonetheless, there's no reason you should take any other B251 professor.
Graf is a really great guy. He is fair, responsible, and on top of everything in his class. It can be challenging if you fall behind or it's your first-time learning econ, but Graf gives a ton of extra credit. Go to every single class (for EC), get 100% on every Quiz and Packback. These are free points which I regret not taking full advantage of.
Professor Graf is a good professor, it's just that his lectures mainly cater to those who actually care about the subject. He is generous and gives out TONS of EXTRA CREDIT at the beginning of the semester, so take advantage of it. I definitely would've stayed in the class and done better if I had put in more effort.
Best professor for econ out of all the others I've seen and heard of. There's a ton of extra credit. Got a D on my first two exams and got an F on the last one, passed the class with a B. I still had to put in lots of effort and work. I attended all CL sessions and did all extra credit. Participation is graded, never missed a class.
The absolute worst professor ever. I went to office hours every week and did all the extra credit and still ended with a C+. He did not care about the efforts that I put in. The tests are extremely hard and the reviews have nothing to do with the tests. The tests are meant to trick you so do not trust the exam reviews that he gives.
Professor Graf gives a truly insane amount of extra credit during the first three weeks. Class is difficult if you put no effort in, but if you pay attention and study it's not that bad. Graf is an extremely personable guy who is very good at lecturing to 300 people. His attendance policy is kinda strict (a point per class). Would recommend him.
Prof. Graf gives an insane amount of extra credit. He does not post the full notes online, so make sure you write down anything you wont remember. There is plenty of opportunity to get help through tutoring services and collaborative learning. The second exam is much harder than the first, exams are NOT like the practice exams he posts.
Professor Graf is a nice guy, but the class is way too hard for no reason. He doesn't post full versions of the notes and there are quizzes every week. Exams are hard and not like the practice exams he posts at all. He does give a good amount of extra credit.
I took Professor Graf because I heard he was the easiest to get a good grade in. I would agree with that; he gives lots of extra credit, which is a great cushion for the rough exams. He is a great guy, funny and keeps the lectures light, but a terrible teacher. I felt he taught the material very complicatedly, making lectures a waste of time.
Prof Graf is a great professor! If you can, take the hybrid online class through him, and try to get a smaller class size. I put minimal time into this class throughout the semester and studied before the exam and ended with an A. Make sure you read the textbook religiously and utilize all the practice material you get. Exams are hard and complex.
Graf's very enthusiastic and friendly and gives enough extra credit that you can get a B+ even if you only recieve D's on all exams. However his class would be way too difficult for anyone who hasn't taken econ before. Tons of extra credit to make up for it tho. Study the e-text.
Graf's class was very structured and he gave so much extra credit that I was never worried about my grade in the class. There isn't much work outside of class either. One part I didn't like was that he would sometimes run out of time at the end of class and send us the rest of the notes, but these concepts were often the more difficult ones.
Professor Graf is a great guy, that being said his class was very difficult for me. The practice material and quizzes did not help prepare for the tests at all. I would get all the answers right on on the practice tests and quizzes and still get a C-D on the tests. I still ended up with a B+ due to the large amount of extra credit though.
Difficult concepts. Nice guy but speeds thru lectures. Lots of extra credit- can get good grade even if u do shit on tests. This is the Easiest b251 class you can get bc of the EC, almost 30 points. Take graf over the other teachers.
Graf gives a lot of extra credit so as long as you do good on 1 or 2 tests and decent on the other, get your assignments in, the class isn't too bad. A lot like high school microeconomics if you took that. Just make sure you attend class and do the top hats
Graf's nice but goes through slides too quickly and makes everything more complicated than it has to be. If you haven't seen the material before it could be rough, but if you've taken it before it's light work. So much extra credit, it's unreal & I ended with over 100%. Go to the CLs and do a few reps of the practice quiz/exams and you're good.
Graf gives a large amount of extra credit if he didn't the whole class would be failing. Graf is caring and a very nice guy but the class overall is extremely hard and the thing that prepares you the most for the tests is the Tophat readings. The lectures did not help.
Graf is probably the BEST econ professor you can get. His lectures are somewhat boring but he makes the the content very understandable. He also gives out a TON of extra credit that you should do no matter what. I did all the extra credit and ended the class with an A (averaged a low B on the exams). Be prepared to study for the exams.
Econ is not my strong-suit, but I'm glad I took the class with Graf. The lecture topics were difficult for me to understand, but he did a great job with explaining and it's clear how passionate he is. If you're lost from the lecture, use the ebook - it helped me a lot! He also gives a TON of extra credit. Study, attend class, use the resources!
He did a great job explaining concepts and trying to keep the lectures entertaining! He also was very considerate of the students that might have been confused! Great professor overall!
Graf is funny and very engaging in economics. By far the best B251 professor and with the extra credit you should be able to get an A by simply going to class and doing the quizzes.
WORST PROFESSOR. WILL MANIPULATE UR GRADE WHENEVER HE WANTS EVEN AFTER THE SEM. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Prof. Graf makes Econ a much easier subject to understand. He wants to see his students succeed and helps us do so by having extra credit opportunities that require us to further our knowledge in the course. He could go more in-depth during lectures, but he also wants to make sure he can cover all of the difficult material in class.
I found Graf funny and felt like he loved economics. There is tons of extra credit and it is very easy to really boost your grade with it. There's a lot to be said about the tests but in my experience I was able to get atleast a B on every test with only a day or two of studying and just taking good notes in class. I have not taken econ prior.
Loves his job and is nice and caring to the whole class. Not the best at teaching either sometimes not clear. Econ isn't the most interesting thing especially for 1h15mins. Test Heavy and a bit hard. Extra Credit will carry your grade so be ready to do all of it.
Professor Graf is a cool professor, but Top-Hat in this class sucks. I haven't missed a single class but I don't have half of my Top-Hat points. Also, don't to the practice exams, because it is not helpful at all. The tests are challenging, and he doesn't curve it at all. Be prepared for the tests.
I think Graf is the best econ prof for B251. Lectures were easy to follow and tests are not bad at all. He gives insane extra credit, even with not so great test scores I did well in the class.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. No curves for exams, and 5 points of extra credit only. This is not the first time of taking an Econ class, he makes everything confusing, even in the exams. He said he likes doing that because he can see if you have really understood the concept or not. Nonsense. Do not take his class.
Professor Graf is an engaging lecturer who makes economics interesting. The class has a lot of extra credit opportunities to boost your grade, but the tests can be challenging. I found unstuckstudy and ChatGPT helpful for study prep.
I enjoyed Professor Graf. Although the concepts in the class are pretty challenging, the energy he has makes it worth while. Be prepared to take notes and study, though. You will not do well if you don't prepare for exams. The extra credit he gives at the start of the semester is AMAZING though.
Never really got to know him but seemed like a cool person. Gives a bunch of extra credit but he truly just overcomplicates all the topics from ap macro and micro.
Prof. Graf is an amazing person. However, econ is hard to begin with and Graf overcomplicates topics making it even harder. The class is entirely on power points which typically aren't finished in class. The tests are hard but curved. He offers extra credit, and attendance is taken twice daily, with a is a weekly quiz. It's very possible to succeed
Very good lectures that kept me focused.
Very funny and knows how to teach economics. Concepts are made to be easily understood. Lectures are very enjoyable and there is a lot of opportunity to learn and grow in the class. He forces you to think out of the box and apply concepts to the real world. Very fun class.
Very good professor - you can tell he cares about and genuinely enjoys what he teaches. Be sure to do the extra credit opportunities and come to class. Tends to talk and explain concepts very quickly if he runs out of time so beware of that. Overall a phenomenal professor
I loved Prof. Graf, and you can tell that he genuinely loves economics. He's funny and wants you to succeed. Gives a lot of extra credit, but Exams are tough.
Funny guy who wants you to succeed. It's as if your fun uncle is teaching you Economics. Tests are tough but an insane amount of extra credit is offered. Would pick him over any other teacher even though his tests are said to be the most challenging.
Graf is a great guy and he tries his best to teach but for someone who hasn't taken micro before, the class was pretty hard. He goes too fast in his lectures to make notetaking worth your time. I'd recommend only showing up for the TopHat points and then taking notes on your own from the E-Book. Be sure to get all extra credit and you'll be fine.
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! The class is hard, but if you take the notes the way he does and pay attention in class he pretty much tells you what to study for. Ended the class with a B, because I didn't take my notes like him for the first section. 3 tests, last one is cumulative. make up like 60% of your grade combined. If you can take hybrid do it!
Professor Graf attempts to make econ fun and exciting, when it really isn't. He gives lots of extra credit and makes sure to assist students who want to do better and get a good grade. If you're motivated, you can do well, if you simply don't care to do your work, you will do poorly. This class depends on you not Dr. Graf.
I enjoyed my time in Professor Graf's class and will make it a priority to get him when I take B252. I thought that he did an excellent job with lectures, but they did sometimes get a bit boring. Rather than dropping so many quizzes and attendance to give you grace, he gives it in terms of extra credit. Do every attendance, quiz, discussion, etc.
Professor Graf is a very good professor and cares about his students. Make sure to try very hard on the tests. I think he is the best econ professor.
I actually hate econ but he made it okay and understandable. I had him for his hybrid class and based on what I heard, I would take that instead of having him for the huge lecture because it's more flexible. Gives extra credit which is nice, and is available to ask questions especially before exams.
Prof Graf is a great professor. He is super engaging and he makes his lectures interesting. Graf has a sense of humor that makes the class fun. His grading policies are strict and TopHat attendance is taken, so make sure you have it set up right because you will not be counted present even if you show up to class every time.
Easily the best teacher I have had at IU. Great lecturer and provides considerable extra credit opportunities to take stress off of exam performance. He's the reason I chose to add an economics minor
Very passionate about econ, good lecturer but can sometimes feel confused or bored but I think that's more on me. Not an easy class and the exams make up most of the grade, but he gives a ridiculous amount of extra credit. Funny dude too, Graf was one of my favorite professors this semester.
Professor Graf is an amazing professor. I had him during the Fall 2022 semester and he always hosted the most interesting lectures. He also gives plenty of extra credit, so if you mess up an exam, you can still pass with a good grade. My exam got lost and he spent 30 minutes looking through stacks of tests just so I could get a grade. Amazing guy.
I would say if you did well on ap micro in highschool then take graf, you'll already know most of the content so the tests won't be too bad, and he gives TONS of extra credit to carry your grade. He's a great guy, but doesn't explain the content super well, and his tests are harder than other profs. I mostly relied on prior knowledge for exams.
Nice guy, lots of Extra Credit. Material is easier than B251 but tests are harder. Mandatory attendance (TopHat with location verification) and u need to go to get the completed notes. If u put in the studying for each quiz and exam and pay attention to the slides the class is lwk light. If u slack it will be harder. I'd take Graf again for 252.
All lectures. Make sure to go to class or you will lose easy points. Class is hard but every B-251 class is hard. He gives lots of extra credit.
His exams are much more difficult than other B251 professors, but he gives a ton of extra credit so that his grade distributions still end up being the same as other classes. His lectures cover pretty much the exact same material as the textbook. Study a LOT before the exams and know the textbook like the back of your hand and you'll be good to go.
I would recommend Professor Graf. He is very kind and wants to see his students do well. He often makes jokes that make the lecture not seem as long. Pay attention and go to office hours for help.
Horrible lectures, not engaging, completely useless in-class notes. Only the textbook matters, tests are the hardest I've taken in my life. Too many gotcha questions, actual content does not help regardless of the effort you put in. Genuinely insane tests, do not take this class, take Schwendel if you want a normal class.
Really sweet professor, good at teaching what he does. Didn't find his class bad at all, and he does give EC.
BRO MAKES NO SENSE
its less about the professor more about the class. Genuinely the hardest thing EVER. B251 sucks it's so hard exams are SO HARD. I debate my life choices walking to class every Tuesday and Thursday. I know so many Kelley and pre Kelley drop outs bc of ts. notes are posted blank so u will show up, boring and hard to pay attention to. weed out class
If you attend the lectures and take notes, you will do completely fine. It is important to study for at least a week before the exam, because there is a lot of content. His lectures are engaging, and he gives real-life examples to help with understanding. The tests are not impossible, just challenging.
Class is pretty light, but the lectures are boring. The textbook does a great job of explaining the concepts and is good for studying. Tests were not super difficult and Graf gives a lot of extra credit.
he gives a lot of extra credit, just be ready to work hard
Mirco Economics was one of the harder courses I took this semester. Lectures and long but Graf does a good job keeping class engaged. Tests are all multiple choice but do require ALOT of studying. What saved me is the absurd amount of extra credit given out. Out of all the economics professors, I would recommend Graf.
Test extremely difficult for no reason and class doesn't prepare you for them
Great lectures—sort of boring, but it's economics so you can't expect much else. Funny guy, passionate and explains things very well. Grades reasonably and course is very structured, so you should not run into any problems. Also, extra credit opportunities are numerous. If you study well (exams are self-studyable), then you will be fine. Take Graf!
I like paul graf as a professor, i just personally didn't like the lectures. I find it hard to follow and stay focused for the hour and 15 minutes. tests are hard but he gives a bunch of extra credit which is great
If you have taken AP Micro in high school this class isn't too difficult. Read the textbook alongisde lectures, it makes the material a lot easier to understand. Lectures were a bit boring, but he taught the concepts pretty well. Overall, the exams were a bit difficult compared to other professors but he offers a lot more extra credit as well.
...........
Just lock in on tests and you'll be fine.
Amazing professor! If you took Econ in high school you'll be completely fine, even if you didn't it's still doable. So much extra credit too. Pay attention in class and do the top hat reading and you'll be fine.
The best Econ teacher at IU! He offers extremely generous extra credit that students should take advantage of. The class should be a breeze if you took Micro in high school, but students new to economics may find the concepts challenging at first. Professor Graf reminded me of my favorite dorky uncle (in the best way possible)!
super hard exams but lots of extra credit to help. his lectures were long but i thought he kept the class engaged. biggest takeaway is really study for exams, he throws in lots of questions meant to trip you up, just memorizing the terms isn't enough. can't stress how much extra credit opportunities there are tho
Despite my grade, he was a phenomenal professor. Very passionate about Econ and will help you in any way he can. He gives tons of extra credit to help your grade too.
Great teacher who genuinely is interested in the material covered and cares about students. Lectures can be a bit boring especially if you took economics in high school, but he still makes it fun and easy to understand. If you attend lectures, read the textbook, and take advantage of the extra credit he gives out, you should be fine.
Take Graf if you can! Graf is one of the best professors I have ever had! He makes his lectures interesting and has activities but his tests are harder compared to other teachers. He is willing to help and gives a lot of extra credit (I think he gave around 37 points). The amount of extra credit balances out. Do the work and you will be fine :)
Professor Graf was wonderful, but the course was challenging. If you didn't take micro in high school, be prepared to spend a lot of time on Youtube to learn. Lecture was fine but sometimes boring, but Professor Graf made it as interesting as he could. Extra credit saved my grade considering the test questions were sometimes very niche.
Econ is genuinely a harder course at IU, but Graf was always highly regarded. He gives a ton of extra credit opportunities to try and help those who need a B+ or higher for Kelley. Even though the topic might be hard to grasp, Graf is definitely knowledgeable, and he is a chill professor. I recommend him over some of the other professors for B251.
Professor Graf is a super nice guy, and gives lots of extra credit. His lectures were always pretty interesting (coming from someone who doesn't enjoy Econ). He likes to throw curveballs on tests, so make sure you study hard and go to the CL sessions! He gives lots of study materials, which is useful, but he doesn't make it easy to get an A.
