it's hard to take someone so young and cute seriuosly
Loved this teacher. Very clear. If you have to take Math 2, I definitely recommend this guy. Fair teacher. Will be fun once the dolts drop the class (mid-semester)
Young, cool, and sometimes even funny. Covers each topic with very poor number of examples and expect you to understand. Can be too arrogant and sarcastic to students he doesn't like.
Stupid ****!
Very unclear and impatient..
This guy only makes sense to himself. Not too difficult. Thinks he's a lot smarter than he really is. Goes off on strange tangents, that start out with mathematics, and end up in a Vegas casino. Go figure.
Kind of impatient, but a nice guy and willing to help you out with things you're having trouble with after class. Fair grader on tests. He won't baby you, so you'll still have to study hard, but he can help you understand a lot of it.
His lectures are soooooooo boring. Tests aren't too bad. Save yourself the trouble and do homework in his class or something..even if it's not math.
He is a nice professor. Very understandable but sometimes gives a hard time. He is very patient in explaining after class.
He can be sarcastic and difficult sometimes, but thats just because he wasnts you to be clear. He is very fair and if you pay attention do your homework and study hard, then you should do well. He grades fair (gives partial credit) and counts homework.
His lecture is not very clear, sometimes confusing. But his class is not boring and actually it's not really hard for me to understand his lecture. His grading is little bit weird but not that bad. He's sometimes mean. But he's nice.
well, how do i say about him.hm.... he is very young for math i think. he gives some not understandble examples. like other peopls said. i dont really want u guys to take his math class if u really wanna learn wat math is. but if u so so persist..
He can be diffucult at times but he honestly trys to help you out. 1 time he let the whole class retake a test cause we did so bad. However, he is no nonsense type of guy and his tests were progessively harder. But genuinely has a good heart.
He really has no idea how to teach. He really knows the material, but can't convey his ideas. Tets aren't that hard. If you have to take him - study a lot yourself, and depend more on the book and outside sources to help you do well. You can definitely tell he's not interested in teaching.
His class was the killer of my GPA. After two years of getting straight As, I am still not fully recovered. He is straight out of UCLA, tired of being a student. What he does is he lets his bad teachets' experiences back onto HIS students. Overly bossy and has an enormous ego.
0h..pleeeaaassee.. if yah wanna learn d0nt take dis class!!! he's d w0rst pr0fessor i've ever had! not 0nli he's so b0ring he als0 got chips on his b0th shoulders! he thinks he's all dat! we even felt like we're bein' underestimated by this guy..
Admittedly he does seem to have a bit of an ego and can be a little condescending/sarcastic but part of that makes the class fun. Overall, a pretty good teacher, especially for those who are mathematically inclined. Lectures are clear and he goes over proof of every theorem.
Good guy, has a nice cynical sense of humor. Gets a little frustrated with students who don't pay attention. He's probably not the guy to take for an easy A. Recommended for people who need a refresher course.
Has to be the worst teacher at SMC. There's no way around it. The material isn't that difficult, especially if you did well in Math 7. But everything I learned, was by myself. He's so theoretic, and absolutely boring. He himself, does not have a good grasp on the material - but he pretends to. haha
Yeah, try someone else if you can. This boy should be somewhere else but NOT teaching. He no good for that! Mathematically inclined? I was until I took his class!
itzz a biG biG mistake if u wud take dis guy!!! he doesnt teach well pls his hella boring... and he's soooo arr0gant!!! he got in to mah last nerve! hmp!
very clear. I didn't like math before I took his class but after taking it with Mr.Graves I like math. He's kind, helpfull, makes sure everybody understands before he moves on and he gives tutoring on his free time in the class room if he can. He's also very entertaining. making jokes.
Not that bad at all, despite what others say...pretty fair tests!
Big problem he did not do many homework problems in class therefore can’t do the homework & tests tests should be more like the homework not his weird examples. He can’t convey the ideas too much theory not enough exercises(I have a book for that)Huge ego.Very condescending.Didn’t mind his humor.
if you like tons of theory and 2 easy exercises (like, #2 and #4) a day, then you won't regret taking him. he likes persians, but he's rude to foreigners with accents... and not only to them. i wouldn't call him sarcastic, the right word is condescending.
He explains a topic too much, to the point that confuses himself and the class. A bit arrogant and likes to embarrass students that ask wrong questions. He means well, but knowing a subject doesn't mean you can teach it. Midterms are 6 questions, you miss one, you are screwed to a B-.
Come on guys, he's not that bad. He really tries his best, and he is extremely helpful. Just do your homework on a regular basis, and you should be fine. I really think he's a nice guy.
GPA killer! I hated this guy. I wish I didn't take Math with him. I wish nobody has to. I learned the hard way. Please don't repeat my mistake. And worst of all, he doesn't have any respect for student whose native language isn't English. I just got into Columbia and got a C in his class.
Expect difficult and tricky exams - makes the exams harder than needed. He expects you to do math his style without telling you what that is. He means well but doesn't give the student the benefit of the doubt - not for a second! Probably one of the harder math teachers to get a good grade.
This man is crazy! I thought he would be cool because he was young, but he was nothing more than a pompous jerk. Each day he would put the class down for not getting certain math problems. I was so mad I complained to the math dept. Some people should not be teaching, he's one of them.
I really, really liked him, no joke. He stays after class and answers all your questions, and that at 10pm. His tests are sometimes a little tricky, but definitely manageable. He's a genuinely good guy, and I recommend him to anybody.
whenever i attend his class.. it feels like im in hell! oh go0dness! not recommended!
never take this class,he is pretty bad. if you take his class, you have to work hard by yourself. you have to find out what the chapter is talking about by yourself because you won't understand what he is talking about
Prof Graves is a great teacher, math isn't easy for many, but he does a great job explaining the material. Very helpfull, gives many tests, so you get many chances to show that you do your work.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS! Everyone who leaves a negative comment is right. Graves is sarcastic, arrogant, and has an extremely difficult time explaining himself, over and over and over again. Also very boring!!!!
DON'T TAKE HIM!!!He explains the theory behind math..who needs that?We need explanation for solutions..HARD TESTS coz they're somewhat TRICKY..5 questions on each test,u miss one you're done..so much talk about getting a real job studying weather..then do us all a favor...
Good teacher for math students. Tests are straight from material. gives homework points , a big help. Dont take if struggling with math and need time to understand every concept.
he does tons of theory and barely goes over problems, but he presents the theory so clearly that doing many examples isn't necessary. i still have all the notes from his class and they really helped me review before taking math 8. however, he excels in making students feel stupid and he's an extremely condescending ****.
I think he is one of the best math professors in SMC. He is very very clear on his lectures and willing to answer any questions. If you do the HW on time, then you'll be fine.
Graves is a bad teacher. He over-complicates his explanations and he is extremely unclear. He is also very full of himself.Lol, you can tell he thinks he's hot. I found him annoying and very unapproachable.
Difficult and tricky exams. Not enough questions but enough time. he's bad at explaining too, and spends WAY too much time talking about himself. DON'T take him.
Just a real ****. doesn't care about students, he's pretty easy- especially if you have some background in math. but it seems like he just likes to hear himself talk, half of his lectures arent relevant to the class... REALLY condescending, if you're good at math and you don't need to take anything from his lectures... he' s actually amusing.
a big no!!!!!!! this guy is ridiculous!
what can i say about this guy. In the begining he is extremely tough and sarcastic. But then he becomes less sarcastic and a bit easier. The test on chap 11 was a killer though. I think if you have a good conceptual understanding of math and you take the homework seriously, the class wil be very doable. But be warned this class is very challenging.

I personally didn't have problems w/him, but witnessed the most ridiculous thing. He would not add a student for no reason even though there was space. Is he ****? or Does he just hate people for no reason?
This guy is just unreasonable. I was sitting in class one day and he litterally try and call the police to kick out this guy who was just trying to add his class. It was shocking! Poor guy didn't even do nothin' and this prof. was just against him for whatever the reason. It was upsetting and aggravating to see a guy like him teaching.unacceptabl
never ever take him! this guy sucks! he thinks he's all that!!! so annoying!!!
paul is very hard on grading. always gives like 5 or 6 problems on test. doesn't give extra like his syllabus says he would and likes to put you on the spot when you don't understand the question. he tends to get loud when he himself knows what he's taking bout. he expects you to know what he's talking about. if not he says to go back to the review
He is a hard teacher. If you want to kill yourself, then take him! Not easy to get an A or B. Every students hate him!
don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't don't take his class, but if you want to get a F take it. i think he doesn't like people. mucho mucho unhelpful and unclear.
His tests are not that hard, however, he is a bit a tough grader. Extremely helpful, if you don't understand something.
Great teach. Very interested in u learning the material. Uses real world examples and works problems w/ u extensively to help you understand. Also a good teacher for the advanced: he shows proofs and talks about the conceptual side of the material. 4or5 tests w/ 5or6 ?'s each. HW is 10% of grade (i did none and got a C) A little effort will = easyA
he is such a bed teacher~ he don't like students and hia lecture is so bed I couldn't understand...don't take his class if you want to learn something...
he is a nice guy and knows math.. yea if you are a****and cant understand the material you will fail.. everyone one on this page thats says "dont take this class" needs to realize its not the teacher, its what you make of it... HAHAHA I got an A
Graves is a nice guy, but can be a jerk sometimes. Good thing about him is that he does want to help you learn and get a good grade in the class. He mumbles and talks way too much about off-subject items. He CANNOT teach. On one of the tests, the whole class failed, except like 2 people. He probably denies the fact that teaching is NOT his thing.

Summer course. This guy is really cool, teaches perfectly, h.w. collected on test dates, wants every to pass (but does not mind if everyone fails). Answers h.w. questions or any general questions before class or sometimes at the end of class. Do all the h.w. and go to class on time, EVERY time (takes roll every class period).good luck and enjoy!!!
graves is a nice and he knows what he is talking about. he is a good teacher, even, but his test SUX!! in class, you'll think you understand, but when you sit down for his tests, you realize that you know nothing, even if you studied. plus he kind of cocky

He teaches the class good and all, cocky and funny to make the three hours pass by...but I can't believe how much I studied to fail. I love math and all but he made me hate Geometry. The minute i sat down i took my time during the tests and double checked them all to find out that i didn't "clarify" or his favorite word "Justify"

Winter semester Calculus. He is a good teacher. Very thorough with his explanations. I highly recomend him if you like math. He has a very good understanding of concepts, and really wants students to understand them as well. He's no saint, but he's a really good teacher. Be prepared to work and be in class every day, it's worth it.
This instructor knew his materials and was able to present them in a clear, thorough manner. ANALyticial when grading exams ("Justify your work" or points deducted). Frequently obnoxious and intimidating, but willing to help when asked. Not easy sailing, but with effort, you might just learn from him something valuable in this sea of mathematics.
the worst professor in SMC!
This guy is one of the smartest people I have ever met. I was blown away by his understanding of so many things. But as a teacher, he's horrible. He thinks he's one of the fairest teachers around, but in reality, he can come off as being harsh. His tests are absolutely insane, and his idea of partial credit is ridiculous. Don't take his class.
I enjoyed Precalculus and learned a lot; it prepared me well for Math 7. Paul is fairly sarcastic and enforces school policy. He is a very clear lecturer, proving theorems which you can't understand from the book. He forces you to memorize quite a bit, otherwise tests are too difficult because you run out of time. Strict grader, takes attendance.
If you are interested in learning about Geometry don't take this class. He spends about half of the class time talking about anything from Geography to poker and not teaching Geometry. It is very frustrating. He is also very strict on attendance and will not work with you if you are a little late because of your job.
Always went over proofs of theorems clearly, with emphasis on the logic behind the math instead of just "how to get the right answer". IMO he had a great way of teaching, especially for students interested in math and planning to take more advanced courses.
This guy knows his stuff... total math genius. BUT!- he is very condescending, gives extremely diffficult tests, and will kill your GPA unless you are brilliant in math or are taking this class as a review. His theory is that mastering the material (of Math 20) is only a C grade. He wants you to be proficient in pre-cal. for an A. Not reasonable!
Had and still have no particular interest in Geometry, but he was an average math teacher, nothing special but nothing to make him get a bad review either. He's very knowledgable, a little easy to get him sidetracked and talk about other subjects.
Never take his class!!!! His tests are hard, grading is just way too hard!!!!!!!!!!! Never ever take this teacher!!!!
Graves is a very good math professor. teaches math the way it should be taught. He is very very smart but knows how to explain complicated things in a simple fashion. Do NOT be afraid to ask questions!! I took his class 2 semesters ago, i am now in precalculus, and the other teachers i have had since him are eather too lazy to teach or unclear
easy D. he will make your GPA upside down.
I didn't take the ratings seriously at first. BIG MISTAKE! AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Class did horribly on exams as a whole, thinks he's the best math teacher on the planet but really doesn't have any teaching theory background. Not a professional teacher, just a part-timer who admittedly is doing this until something better comes around.
Understands what he's teaching. Easily sidetracked into random topics. Is not satisfied with basic understanding of class; requires perfection. Slightly condescending with a need to justify any actions, right or wrong, taken. If you are a math major this teacher will probably help for future math classes. Otherwise, look elsewhere
(summer session) Graves is a very thorough teacher. Teaching style is interesting: I feel like I learned way more about math than I did when I took pre-calc in HS. Make no mistake--it's not an easy class. That being said, if you go to class and keep up with HW, you should be fine. Great teacher if you plan to go further with math.
Paul was hilarious- he has a very dry sense of humor, that not many students in my class appreciated. Tough grader (though when it comes to his end of the grading, he was often late), requires hard work. Teaching style: his explanations are thorough but can be hard to follow. Make sure you buy the answer guide to the text- impossible without it.
Bad personality for prof. SERIOUS inferiority complex--must prove self right, its so true. Dont argue. Tests nothing at all like HW. I'm good at math & abstract concepts, but the answer to 1 question was 2 actually rewrite the QUESTION without explicit directions 2 do so! NO TIME for games like that. Take a prof. who wants 2 help not prove himself.
People said it-VERY CONDESCENDING.Not approachable& quite argumentative/very defensive even when students R carefully w words. Not clear w instructions when he thinks he is.He's smart, but whats the point if u can't teach?Material shouldnt B hard, but lots of kids compln'd feelin dumb 4 F's on tests.HW-optnl, drop 1test, NOT WORTH IT!DON'T TAKE HIM!
Yes, he's a jerk and very condescending, but I'm taking Math 7 now and realized how much it was worth taking Precalc with him. He really makes u think about the problem and wants u to fully understand what's going on. Tests are tough, hard to get an A but doable. Remind him during class to not go off topic so much - he sure loves to chit chat.
knows his stuff, but cant teach to save his life' rambles on about pointless subjects easily sidetracked. hes a rather loud talker so if your sensitive to invasive sounds sit well back' math 18 is a new class and he expects everyone to know what he's supposed to be teaching, stay away form this guy at all costs!!! lousy "teacher"
What a JOKE!!!!! This guy must have fallen on his head as a baby in order to have made the most wrong descision ever to be a teacher, he has no idea how to be good with students. He is smug, disorganized and impatient with students. Avoid at all costs.
helpful!!!!!
This instructor knew his materials and was able to present them in a clear, thorough manner.
Homeboy rules! Plus, he has one of the coolest last names in the world. I'm going to take him for Differental Equations this summer & I can't wait! Math instructors ALWAYS get bad reviews from students in lower level classes. This is usually because the instructor doesn't give them an A without working for it. Completely disregard these reviews.
He is extremely funny and adorable. Definitely a hottie! He is very knowledgeable, but gets side-tracked very easily.
How does one give a high rating to a professor who ends up with 13 out of 40 students. For Santa Monica College to allow such a condescending, rude, egotistical, unmotivating, righteous, unorganized, unprepared professor to continue to teach its students is at the very least shameful. It is unfortunate that the SMC Math Chair is so uninterested.
funny guy...if you can deal with the sarcasm. hes straight forward so he comes off as mean. he gets side tracked and lets you choose to opt out of homework. grades hard on tests but prepares for final, which makes it a lot easier.
Pretty good teacher if you keep your ears open during lectures, if he says something about how to write an answer for a particular problem - it's guaranteed he will take off marks if you don't do it properly on the tests! He is fair, just pay attention and give fully explained answers. Oh, and don't opt out of the homework!
excellent prof! i took him for math 2! hes great! will help you out if u need it! keeps the class well entertained and focused! dont get scared reading the other comments! hes not bad at all!
He is the best teacher. SO people says his class is impossible but actually not too tricky if you listen to his lecture carefully and do the problems in the book. Make sure to keep up with material thou. Plus he is sooo cute.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I am an older college student who takes my classes very seriously and I was very disappointed in Graves lack of knowledge and in his teaching abilities. The class I had him for was Math 18. I paid a very well educated tutor to help me with the material since attending his class was entirely useless. Out of the two tests
I believe that the comments left on here for Dr. Graves have alot to do with both his personality and the difficulty of the classes that he teaches. His personality can seem offensive to some, but I assure you he means no harm and is doing this only to help you remember not to make the same mistake again. Overall an above average Prof, recommended.
He has a very good understanding of concepts, and really wants students to understand them as well.
He is really a nice guy and he is willing to answer all the students questions. I think we should give him a break.
he is really nice guy, he spents 1 hour after class helping anyone with a question. I personally learned alot from. Not only in my studies but also patience from him.
He must stop drinking cokes before his classes! he's alright, he teaches ok, but when it goes to exams to must expect to get something weird! its not what he went over in class! Stuy hard and do all the homeworks to get a B! for an A, you should almost study 24/7 math
his the stupidest teacher i have ever had in my life, he teaches u everything but math, i learned how to make alcohol, and about the stars and cars. he did 3 problems in 3 hrs, and he starts a problem and forgets to finish he talks about random things, the most unorganized teacher ever, don't take him if u have no patience. he doesnt care about u d
I love Paul. Thank you so much for the B! He was a very cool teacher, the kind of guy you want to have a beer with after class. It was a hard class, and I worked my butt off, but now it was worth it. Paul was very smart and knows his stuff. Can come off as arrogant, but that's just his style. Be prepared to put in the work and you will do fine.
If you are not strong at math do not take this class. its annoying that he talks about everything but math and wastes your time. test are relatively easy, but he only does about two sample questions per section and you have to get outside tutoring for help if you want an A.
Well, you should know your math if you want to pass this class. I took him for Fall and he gave out hw, but he never collected it. So it wasnt motivating AT all. He is Hard, and does talk about something other than math. I would fall asleep. Wouldnt recommend him as much :/
Paul is frequently late to class, dresses sloppily, and doesn't hand tests or homework back promptly. He doesn't even correct homework, yet assigns problems with no answers, so half the homework is useless because you have no idea if you did it right. Worst of all, his explanations are unclear, he skips steps, and is arrogant. Terrible teacher.
I am usually a really good math student.Paul however, taught firstly the convuluded way of solving a problem and then quickly gave the shortened way. He was very sarcastic and made you feel like you were very stupid. He was not clear in his teaching.I found it ironic that he made a speech the 1st day of class about how some people shouldn't teach.
He has a very complicated way of teaching the material. Tests are really confusing and he is somewhat condesending. We spent one whole class period talking about interest rates. No wonder we are 3 weeks behind schedule.
Tests are ridiculous. He makes typos and often leaves stuff out that totally fluctuates the correct response. Then he gets mad when we say he's being unreasonable. this dude will justify himself in everyway possible, such an arrogant and rude professor.
ugh! worst professsor. Of the 2 exams we have had so far, the highest grade was an 83 on both. Obviously he can't teach well. We are not all stupid!
This teacher is a wonderful guy to have a beer with but you would never want him as your math teacher. All of the tests so far have been accompanied by low grades by all students (83 or lower). He doesn't grade on a curve, he doesn't really show steps well, and when you ask questions he makes you feel like a complete idiot. Nice guy, bad teacher.
WORST PROF EVER. I took him last spring and he was incorigible, sloppy, condescending, and offered little to no help. He made everyone feel like idiots if they asked him a question about the homework/problems. The tests were ridiculous, mostly because he never corrected the homework, so you were left in the dark. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Save yourself.
The teacher sucks.. I studied for his testes by doing all the chapter problem in the book. Guess what, I got a D. He spoke about everything exempt math for the period. I went to his office hour, and he was sleeping while I was talking to him. I dropped the class and got a W.
I just got my grade! And its a D!!! I had a C+ in class and he made me to retake this class! I know even calculus! but he makes the exams so hard that you hate your self! Why does he even do such thing like that? hes super off-topic of math in class, he talks about gambling, drinks soda all day and at the end makes me retake the class! SO NOT GOOD
This professor would spend whole class periods talking about subjects not having to do with what we need to learn (i.e. math), which would leave us weeks behind in the material. Then he'd race through some equations in one class to make up for lost time. This inconsistent teaching and rushing through material leads to our poor grades. :(
It would be a 'grave' (get it) mistake to take Graves class -- off-topic constantly and unhelpful (it is obvious he knows the material, but sucks at teaching it). He also discourages asking questions his a 'smarter-than-thou' attitude. Definitely only take him if it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. I think pages of reviews like this reinforces this..
Dr. Graves is an amazing teacher but a horrible professor. You will know the material if you keep up with his standards, but it is likely that your GPA will suffer even if you understand the material. Explain EVERYTHING on exams. You can lose over half credit with the correct answer. I regret taking him but know Calculus better because of it.
He gives the type of education you would expect from a good 4 year university. Extremely hard class because you actually have to understand the material not just know how to use it. Great teacher, but most will find him a bit too harsh when grading exams. Don't take him if you are not up to a difficult challenge or you will regret it.
i don't know what all are complaining about... graves is the best teacher i have ever had he will surly get you to understand the material like no other professor can but in exchange he ask for hard work and understanding of the concept of the material not just repetition and it is priceless if you need to take more math classes.
he gets off topic way too much!! sometimes i forget that i'm in a math class. i wish i would have looked at rmp before i took this class; save yourselves some trouble and just pick a different professor!
Easy A, just don't forget to bring your textbook
I suspect that any comments that say Math 2 IS an easy A must be written by Graves to lure students into taking his class. He does not teach concepts clearly, teaches more convoluted methods of approaching problems than the more practical, and is snarky and arrogant. I took Precalc last year in high school and still struggled with his class. AVOID!
I suspect that any comments saying this class is an easy A is written by Graves. He definitely has an understanding of the material but does not know how to communicate it. He teaches more convoluted approaches to solving problems than the more practical, and worstly is snarky and arrogant. Do yourself a favor and heed my warning-AVOID!
The class is not hard but rather time consuming. Pr. Graves is overall a nice person. He explains pretty well. Recommend him.
Knows his stuff and if you're willing to work hard you will get a good grade.
Prof. Graves is probably a nice man but he is not a great teacher. He is pretty unkind and he is not very helpful if there is something that you do not understand.
Nice guy. He hates dumb questions, so if you have something dumb to ask, he will mock you. Doesnt answer problems from the book, he rather tells you how you might solve it. Daily HW, 4 tests, one final. test similar to HW, final similar to tests. Easy B if you do HW.
He is a good teacher, but if you dont understand the way he teaches you will have a hard time as he rarely explains in a different way. He is EXTREMELY LAZY when grading tests. 4 tests, 1 final. not terribly hard but you have to know your math in order to pass. HW is worth 10% of your final grade.
Be prepared to do homework. Takes time to answer questions before every lecture. Really wants students to learn and gets frustrated when not getting it (meant as compliment). Good teacher tries to make Math interesting.
Very good teacher. Answers questions before lecture. Takes it personally when students are not learning. He wants students to find math as interesting as he does. Do the homework and you will do well in the class.
Goes on hour long tangents, gets frustrated when a student doesn't understand a problem. His personality takes a certain patience to get along with. His (4) tests are HARD. The final is crazy long and does not give enough time to complete.
gets frustrated with students easily. Says that his job is to confuse students. tells students not to eat in class and does so himself. Epically useless and very annoying.
Doctor graves is one of the best professors in SMC! Helpful ! Answers all questions ! So recommended!
if you can not study hard , dont take any math class. Dr grave is an awesome professor. he jocks around, so funny. answer every single question you have.
doctor Graves is a nice guy, pretty chill, always funny, so recommended !
Dr Graves is truly gifted! can make the easiest class impossible. Beware, he will dig a Grave for ur grade, had 4.0 and no repeats b4 his class. During lectures rambles about geography and his 2 mba, never answer questions, mean, annoying, extremely useless. Avoid if u dont want a waste a semester
The most useless math teacher at SMC. Encourages to ask questions but then mocks in front of the class, explains simple concepts as if its a rocket science, drifts off the topic to talk about pizza or his personal life, exams r hard, sometimes cant solve the problem he gave on the board. AVOID AT ALL COSTS, dont buy into his big nice guy image.
Do not take him, if you actually want to learn and be taught. His interest level in teaching the class is below 0. He often complains about his job. He spends 80% of our class time telling us random stories. He's the type of teacher that thinks you already know the material. He always talks down on students. Don't waste your time with him.
doesnt teach, gets angry when asked questions, promises to give exra 10 min on exam but does not, takes forever to check exam.Super hard tests, avoid
waste of time and effort, hard tests, does not explain anything, complains about life all the time- AVOID esp for international students, never repeats .
Dr. Graves is the Dungeon Master, and math is the monster he summons. The DM assigns hw, but you should gain additional experience dungeon crawling through the book. There's 4 bosses followed by the final boss, so be sure to level up accordiaccordingly. Real talk, Graves can be your greatest ally or worst nightmare depending on your student ethics.
I took Precalc my Junior year of high school at the honors level and got an A, so I figured the community college course would just be a nice refresher before moving to calculus- wrong. Graves made the simplest material impossible. I went to office hours but he just rambled, I never left with any clearer understanding of material. AVOID
Talks too much during lectures. Doesn't give any classwork. Tests are really hard, and mostly everyone doesn't do well. Only like five people in the whole class are getting the material and get an A. When you ask him to solve a question, he somewhat explains it. I wouldn't recommend this class, and would never take this class again.
This is the worst Professor in the entire math department. He does not understand basic math concepts, and he blames the students for everything. He is awful. Do NOT take him if you want to progress in math. He will waste your entire semester.
This guy is quite possibly the worst teacher ever. In fact, it's hard to say he's a teacher at all. He is anything but helpful. He is extremely defensive about his poor teaching style and obviously has no interest in being at the front of the classroom except to feed his incredibly large ego. This 'teacher' will lead to bad grades and delayed goals
A terrible math teacher! Only like three people in the entire class get an A. Tests are hard, and worth a lot. If you don't do well in the tests your screwed. Lectures are boring! Doesn't give extra credit or give an classwork. The final is hard and worth a lot of your grade. Don't take him! Worse math teacher I ever had!
I'm great at math but this teacher is just confusing. He makes the simplest things sound so hard. I think that reading the book is better than listening to his lectures. He seems like a nice guy, but he is not such a good teacher as he thinks.
If I had to describe Prof. Graves' attitude toward this class, I would probably use "apathetic." Consistently absenttardy (but makes sure to mark it if you are ever later than him), he wastes tons of time talking about nothing. His tests are difficult deceptive and somehow never correlate to the homework. His lectures are useless. Avoid.
tough grader. he's not very clear. don't skip classes or else your grade will go down. def. not an easy A
Don't take this class if you want an A. or a B. Tests are too hard and you won't understand a thing he teaches. He wastes lots of time talking about his life or just random facts.
He is a very smart person, but is a very bad professor. He is very sarcastic, which made students hold back questions and comments. If you did ask a question, he would say something like "I don't understand why you're having trouble with this problem." He also speeds through the material, so much so that we were 2.5 weeks ahead of schedule. Avoid!
He is one of the worst math teachers I ever had! His lectures are boring and hard to follow. His tests are brutal, and are worth a lot of your grade. He talks a lot about himself, and makes the simplest things sound so difficult. I regret taking his class, I had to take it again with another teacher. Don't take this class!
Amazing professor. Don't pay attention to those bummer! Dr grave is so charming and funny. Always there to help you. So recomended!!!!
One of the worst classes I have ever taken. I had a class that was 2 hours and 20 minutes long and he spent 20 minutes going over the math and 2 hours going off on tangents. Seriously DO NOT TAKE if you actually want to learn about calculus.
Amazing teacher i love the way he point out my flaws and mistakes. I love that he blames all of us for doing horribly on our tests its so encouraging! When ever i ask a question its so funny when he explains it the same way and doesn't clarify at all. If i wanted my hopes and dreams destroyed again 10/10 would take again.
Assigns even-numbered homework problems "to remove the temptation of peeking at the back of the book." So if you want to do your homework and have no idea whether you're on the right track until you see your exam scores, by all means take his class. Spends half the class just chit-chatting.
You can manage passing this class without even attending the lectures because he spends 80% of the time going off on tangents and the rest quickly going over a section. Don't expect to get a good grade unless you plan on teaching yourself the material. Also, makes you feel dumb when you ask a question.
Professor Graves is the one that made want to pursue my engineering studies . It is true that he goes off subject from time to time but at least he made his lectures funny instead of boring. he is VERY VERY helpful, and gave us a lot of extra time to ask questions. He'll make u work for it, but at least u'll get it effectively .
The most arrogant professor I've ever had. Took his class about 5 years ago. Graduated already but felt I needed to warn people. He is a horrible professor.
He usually talks about other subjects than Math during class. There aren't enough examples in class because of that.
Super rude. Has given snarky, unnecessary comments when you're trying to approach him with questions. Do not recommend, has been condescending and also critiques other professor's teaching methods. There are better math 21 options than this guy.
Im reading a lot of negative remarks but in reality this is what most university professors are like. If you can buckle down and do what needs to be done, you'll be okay. Im an english major and I took stats, and ended with a B. He's not a good professor, but hes not satan either, he'll understand your situation if you put in the work.
He is one of the worst math teachers I have ever had. If I could go back I would never take this class ever again. He is uncaring for his students and is very vague with instructions. Does nothing to help and if you ask a question he will not give you a straight forward answer he wraps it in another question making it harder. All in all don't take
Ugh. I was so over this class within two weeks. I'm good at math naturally but this guy made it seem like it was alien space science. Very little that he said made sense. We had a sub one day that got more done in one day than Prof Graves did in two weeks. His grading is confusing and strict and he seems to care too much about stupid things.
Pros: Drops lowest test score if final improves overall grade, tries to connect with class, test problems derived from homework, really knows his stuff. Cons: Condescending when answering questions (if you have thin skin, he's not for you), strong math background OR strong self-study skills are necessary. No hand-holding.
He's the best math teacher I have had at SMC. He is really funny and really cares if you pass the class. He likes to go off on tangents occasionally but they usually tie back in to math. He emphasizes taking responsibility for your own grade and creating good study habits. As long as you do the homework you should have no problem on the tests.
DO NOT take this class if you are interested in spending the entirety of the class learning. He wastes AT LEAST half an hour per class lecturing to stroke his own ego, and alludes to you all being stupid despite taking an intro class. I've never reviewed any professor as they weren't bad enough to warrant one but seriously do not take this class.
Worst professor in math department, he will brag that he never got a D while in college, talks about tv show, movies, politics instead of math during class, talks about how easy this class should be when he makes it very hard. He will not answer your questions, he is rude and disrespectful with students. Avoid him, his mission is to ruin your GPA
I'm warning you if you generally struggle with math, do not take his class if you are just trying to get through quick. The majority of your grade will be from 4 total tests. I put in sooo much work and time and still fell short. Regret signing up for his course so much.
He talks a lot and goes on a lot of tangents. If you are someone not that good at math, he is not for you. When people asked questions he was quite mean to "stupid questions." Very test heavy, 60% of grade comes from three tests.
He goes off on tangents. He doesnt care if youre absent hell just drop you. Barely does notes you have to figure it out . No study guide for tests he said you should be taking your own notes I regret taking this class.
He does not teach any math 90% of the class. His lectures are ridiculous and arbitrary, and his ego is inflated to the max. I don't have a hard time with math, but Statistics is a subject that needs good explanation, and he will not offer that to you. Also makes you feel stupid for asking questions and really is discouraging.
Terrible teaching. He never stays on topic for longer than 10 minutes. With that being said the students are not being taught the lessons, yet he still assigns tests and homework and expects us to teach ourselves. I would not recommend this professor for any one who decided to take math.
This guy makes it abundantly clear that he hates his job. He gets so sidetracked. Not to mention, I refrained from asking for clarification countless times after watching him tear apart students in class asking for clarification. it served as a warning to suck it up and google it instead. luckily I passed lol.
Professor Graves was not a good teacher. He expected people to show up to class and already know the subject. He didn't explain anything well and he was super strict on tardiness (I took a 7am and he would mark a half absence for anyone late under 30mins and would drop anyone that had 4 absences) I ended up dropping his class. Too stressful.
He's a HARD professor and passionate . I believe he is learning to not be so hard in class due to students saying he's harsh. He will spend time helping you during office hours and will do his best to help you out in general. He means well but he comes across as a strict parent that really encourages self discipline and critical thinking.
he just talks about his life, goes off-topic. Expects you to know the material without teaching you! He also doesn't post your grades! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Spends a lot of time going on tangents, if you don't have a medium- strong math foundation I would recommend a different professor.
I took Math 54 with Professor Graves. Overall I enjoyed the class and found it pretty easy. Most of my class disliked him but I thought he was OK. He usually just introduces a topic, does a few problems then you have to do the homework and teach yourself the rest. Stats is pretty straightforward. You get all the info and plug it into formulas.
I took Professor Graves's Calc 1 course over the winter. I was intimated by his ratings but he deserves a lot better. He makes a difficult subject easy enough. He can be a bit condescending when you approach him help but it's nothing too bad. Overall, he's a great professor. Put in the necessary effort with studying and hw and you'll be good.
By far the worst professor I had at Santa Monica College. I took Calculus 1 in high school so I thought I would take a pre-calc class to refresh. He made easy concepts extremely confusing, tests had no relation to his teachings, and often disrespectful to his students. You can tell he hates what he does and his students.
Yea he goes off topic a lot - he's kinda funny, too. I took his class over zoom, it was online. I suck at math and I got an A. He's a good prof, but there are pop quizzes (my class only had 2 overall). Attendance is mandatory. 3 exams and 1 final are majority of grade. 1 final project, too, but it's super easy. Homework isn't super hard at all.
Prof. Graves was awesome. He made sure that we understood fundamental mathematical concepts before building on them/teaching new topics. He did not brush over anything. He is a very fair grader Make sure that you listen all lectures attentively as he only asks what he teaches. If you stay on top of your hw and lectures you should be ok. Spr/23
Prof. Graves is by far one of the BEST professors I have ever encountered. 7am class was fun, filled w/ jokes & he lectures incredibly well! Grading was extremely fair and ANY help you needed, he was there. He wants you to succeed! Biggest tip, stay after class! Ask questions.YOUR PARTICIPATION AND WILLINGNESS WILL EARN YOU THE GRADE YOU DESERVE.
First B I earned in community college. Hard A to earn.
I took calc1 here during the summer after high school precalculus (do not do it!!). He was undoubtedly a responsible professor but it was a little frustrating that I couldn't keep up with his pace. A ton of homework and tricky exam. A lot to be learned but tough grading. It could have been far better if I took it during a regular semester
Awful professor. Rude to students who ask questions. Often responds "you should know that", and moves on. Homework due on the day of each exam, including the final, with subjects that are on the exam. He rambles about unrelated subjects constantly it is very annoying. Do not take if you struggle with math. Weirdly announces who's doing well.
Professor Graves can be hit or miss, but Unstuckstudy helped me stay on track. His lectures are hit-or-miss, but office hours and the textbook were key. Overall, not an easy class, but doable with diligence.
I loved prof Graves Calc 1 class. I took him first semester in college and he was great. His lectures were very understandable and he would break them up by cracking jokes here and there. It was not a easy A however, be prepared to do the homework, and study and you will succeed. He wants you to succeed and is more than fair with his grading.
oh my god. If you struggle with math, DO NOT take his class.
He's a nice professor but the way he grades, is just not it. He's so nitpicky about everything. He made the class VERY difficult. So be aware because this class is hard to manage alongside other unit-heavy courses. So many people dropped his class and I wish I did because it ruined my 4.0 GPA. No one got an A.
