He never makes eye contact.
Tests are kinda difficult..but hes really really interesting. i love his class..hes really smart
No Comments
His philosophy class is great. He has a real love for what he teaches and understands the material, also he is very open-minded in hearing his students ideas.
HES A REAL IDIOT.HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH AT ALL. HE DOES NOT LISTEN TO ANYONE.ITS LIKE HES TEACHING TO HIMSELF.HE DOESNT LIKE TO MAKE EYE CONTACT.TO ME THAT SAYS HE IS NOT WILLING TO WORK WITH YOU.HARD TESTS AND ALOT OF JOURNALS.TYPED.
He is a nice guy, some of his quizes are hard and some are easy, the midterm was easy, and he gives fair warning before giving quizes.
Interesting when he speaks, speaks loudly. Eye contact is an issue, but there is dialogue with the class. Tests are sometimes hard, sometimes easy.
I think he's a good teacher. He's a little corny but amusing. He can be boring but his class is real easy. Just ask a lot of questions in your journal.

This guy is the worst professor in the world. He stands up there and talks to himself, makes corny jokes to himself, and basically teaches himself. His quizzes are horrible and his midterm is hell. Warning!!!! Stay Away!!
I think overall he is a good teacher. He doesn;t give eye contact during his lecture, but he does go over material well, and gives you important notes on philosophers. His tests are pretty hard though and the quizzes so make sure to study.
THE WORST TEACHER IN THE WORLD...ITS SO BORING...AND ANYTHING HE SAYS DOESENT MAKE SENSE..TRUST ME DONT TAKE HIS CLASS..ITS VERY HARD!
He is not as bad as the people below make him out to be. His class is very straightforward. He writes all of the important points on the blackboard, the quizzes are straight from the notes, and the tests aren't that difficult. He is good and fair.
it is not a easy class, but if you listen to him the class becomes really easy and It is only four little journals to be typed. He writes everything you need to know on the board. And he is very clear. I highly recommend him. Also a fair grader. Niki
He's a really nice man..and he's not that hard...he puts everything on the board pay attention to his examples cause he always asks about them on quizes...final and midterm weren't to bad its all in the notes he puts on the board...fair grader
very cool just pay attention
the quizes are ok if u study...but the midterm and final are ridiculous!!!...dont take him...he isnt helpful at all, plus hes so boring..stright out of college and is still teaching himself..i worked my ass off for a B-
This guy is horrible. He should go back to teaching the apes at the zoo because nobody can understand what the hell hes saying.Tests are reall hard especially midterm and final. Stay away from his class.
hes not too hard....tests come straight from the notes, you wont need the text....quizzes every week become a pain in the ass, but are directly from his notes
dont believe these idiots who didnt study and did bad in his class. this guy is mad cool. he helps you if needed. for reviews he gives you as much as time as u want and his notes are wonderful. if u read them no reason u shouldnt get a good grade.
pay attention. go to class. 3 short 1-2 page papers. tells u exactly what to write in his notes. dont need to do any readings bc he explains them in class. crazy boring but u can do good if u try a little
Very Good Teacher Actually Makes YOU THINK!! Makes Class Interesting. Not AN EASY SUBJECT but you Have to use your Head People. Tests are not hard Pay attention in class and review notes the day before the exam and youll do fine.
i cant say he is easy, but he will surely help even if it means to stay 1hour after class. If u just review his notes u will get a good grade.these idiots below didnt study so they messedup.best philo teacher
His class is not easy but it's also not that hard. All you have to do is be there every day and pay attention ..he's very clear. It also helps because his tests come from his notes on the board and from what he says. He's very helpful and understanding...
YEAH THIS PROFESSOR KILLS ME. I THINK HES HAS A LITTLE TOO MUCH TIME ON HIS HANDS. AND IF I HEAR HIM SAY "THUS" ONE MORE TIME IM GOING TO SHOOT MYSELF. lAUGHS AT HIS OWN JOKES. BUT THEN AGAIN I CANT DISTINGUISH IF HES MAKING A JOKE OR JUST GOIN
such a smart man, and you can tell from having one lecture by him. He knows so much but he doesnt feel as though you can comprehend it all so he goes a little easy on you. the work is still hard, but its a great course just because he's near brilliant
He's an ok guy, a bit strict. But not that anal, you just have to write the papers, and take good notes during his lectures, and study for his test and you'll be fine
He's a nice guy. All you have to do to do well in his class is come to class pay attention and do the papers. Test are easy. You dont have to read the text b/c your tested on what you discuss in class. You do have to do 6, 400-word papers in total but you get to pick the quotes. He made me like PHI
SUCH A GREAT PHIL TEACHER, HE IS YOUNG AND MAKES CLASSES INTERESTING.HE ISS PROLLY THE BEST PIL PROF AT SJU. ULL LEARN A LOT FROM HIM, HE KNOS SO MUCH.TAKE HIM IF U WANA ACTUALLY MAKE USE OF UR TIME IN CLASS AND LEARN.
Hes a good prof. and he explains everything! there should be no reason for u to fail unless ur absent everyday...all his tests are based on notes....extremely clear notes at that..nothing is tricky...TAKE THIS GUY!!
NEVER TAKE HIM HIS TEST HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH NOTES NO TEXTBOOK DON'T TAKE HIM WHAT SO EVER!!!!!
sju needs more COHERENT professors, and i believe gyllenhammer's answered their call. he has such a firm command of the lecture material when you think about how young he is & how late in the semester he replaced our first professor. he really inspires you to earn that A.
Cool guy better than that fat **** palese.... ONLY PROBLEM IS WHY DID I GET A B+ on the midterm ...I had only 4 questions wrong .... Well anyways HES AWESOME..... DUDE U ROCK!!!
Even though I hate philosophy, this teacher is pretty good. Very good understanding of the material. Knows what he is talking about, even though at times he could be kind of close-minded. Take him.
THIS GUY ROCKS! its time to crawl out of your shell people and learn to think! Philosophy was a blast, and having an intellectual professor made it that much better. TAKE Dr. Gyllenhammer he's awesome!
I wanted to take philo, but b/c of this horrible prof, I won't take it for a while. I wasted my $ on the books & I didn't learn****. His notes hav more arrows than words, he sux at talking, & he reminds me of ross from friends, in a bad way. most ppl in my class failed the midterm..dont take him!
the guy is in love with his philosophy. His exams are a little hard but if u just review the notes u are then good. it was a waste to buy thr books. dont buy
Great professor. He is so passionate about his work, his class isn't easy, take alot of notes and attend his class and you will get an easy A. His tests are a little hard, make sure you actually study. the 6 essays are very esay. I loved his class, take him for an easy A.
Are you kidding me? This man is completely boring. I use to like philosophy, he happened to ruin it for me. He does know his stuff, but what about making it fun for people instead of preaching to us about what you know. His voice is a monotone, very annoying.
I loved this professor.. not only was he energetic.. but he knows his subject by heart..his tests are straight out of the notes..u will definately learn in this class.. and thats what ur paying money for.. and he's hot.. so for the girls.. u have something nice to look at:)
such a great prof. i never had a half way decent phil prof til him. he actually knows wat hes talking about nd he jus tells u wat u need 2 know not useless bs. no hw and straight foward tests. be grateful 2 have a normal teacher. i wish i was in his class again

Tests are complicated even though they come from the notes...papers are very easy...well-informed man...helpful and clear...welcoming of opinions...must study for tests
this is the worst teacher at sju. if u wanna read, study and bust ur ass for a d-c then take this class. trust me much better teachers for phi. while i was studing my ass off for a c my friends got a's in other phi classes which the went to 5 times all sem.
Yes the class isn't easy...but it's not neccessarily hard either. He's actually interesting and if you do your work you will get good grades! He's understanding and explains thoroughly.
He is so cute! He is also an amazing teacher who knows his stuff. You definately have to study for the test and they are from the notes, but he will help you if you need it
I think he was fair, and helpful when I needed it. Good Prof. You have to attend the class to do well.
His tests are hard and his notes aren't too good of a study guide. They're pretty much all you have, though, so if you're absent make sure you get the work you missed. He's also pretty boring. He gets props for being a nice guy and making philosophy just a lttle bit easier to understand, though.
Class can take forever sometimes, but he knows his stuff and gives very good notes. Don't need books to pass so don't buy em. Tests can be tricky but he's a fair grader and if you study you'll do good. Final was very hard tho. I used my brain in philosophy for a change. Overall very good, take him.
Very nice professor. Knows what he is taking about. And he gives you the opportunity to get a good grade.
Great professor, go to class, take good notes and you will do fine. I never opened a book because he covers everything in class. Really makes it easier to understand the material, so be smart and go to class.
really nice guy...easy class as long as you go to class and take good notes.
he's the illest. he's hot. and he's real cool. and he's hot.
he's hot and cool and he teaches really well. and he's really hot
I was so worried about having to take philosophy, but he honestly made it interesting for everyone. He is extremely intelligent, and wirtes everything you need to know on the board. Everything comes directly out of these notes. He's a great one to take!
Dr. G can TEACH!One of the best professors in campus. He know his sh*t!He goes in details in everything. He is well prepared for everything, very efficient and productive in his teachings. He is a fair grader,u have to study. Make sure u go to class everyday or write ALL HIS NOTES or else his tests gonna get ya! His tests r tricky, but u'll learn alot.
He is a very good professor. This class isn't too hard. If you do all the reading and take notes, you can do well.
He is extremely knowlegable and kind. He is one of the most helpful professors you will ever find on campus. Take down notes and read, that is the only way you will do good. Interesting class, take it.
This guy is the best. I'll be sure to register earlier to make sure I have seat in one of his classes. He made philosophy so interesting that I was thinking of switching my major. He knows what he's talking about and shows much enthusiasm. Just take good notes. He's so awesome - plus kinda cute. It requires some effort. I got an A.
he atleast tried to make very dry material alittle more fun, a very nice guy. 6 papers and a hard midterm and final, not his fault, the material sucks, hell cut u breaks if he likes you caz hes easy going, enjoy good teacher
Explains things thoroughly. Great Teacher. Very helpful. Fun. I don't even like Philosophy but its acutally very interesting.
Waste of Time. Yes,his tests are fairly easy, however, he is too critical about the essays. You have to write 7 two page papers which also wasn't hard but when your taking 6 classes and working, who has time for that. He is NOT A FAIR GRADER so I give you fair warning.I've taken honor Phil. classes at an Ivy league Univer.,got an an A, his class B+.
Thanks to Professor Gyllenhammer, I understood Metaphysics. He is very clear in everything he discusses and offers lots of extra help. If you do your papers, which are insanely short, and show up and listen each week, you will do great!
He was clear and easy
I luv him. He made the subject matter easy to understand and enjoyable. Liked to make reference to his cats which was a little weird. Hes really nice and willing to help. He assigns 7 papers but if you understand the information which you will, the papers are a breeze. Test are right from notes so go to class. I would take him again and plan to
Look he's really into his work..but hes good at what he teaches if you want to learn take him..Test are a little hard but if you pay attention its great..reading is not hard and 6 reflection papers which are a qoute and what it means to you 3 test and thats it...Hes really a cool teacher and open to view points I RECOMMEND HIM TAKE HIMM
Best philosophy teacher you could ever ask for.. EXplains everything thoroughly..Clear notes.. Test aren't difficult as long as u keep up with ur notes.. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking him.. GREAT TEACHER
Not a bad teacher at all. He explains everything very well. He likes teaching and hes very sponaneous. Have to write 6 papers throughout the course of the semester, but they aren't too hard. Only takes like a half hour to write each one. For a philosophy teacher he is great.
he's a really good teacher. makes philosophy very interesting. tests are based on notes and he gives good notes. take him
Great teacher, easy/interesting class based off of his notes. he has you write these like 3 paragraph opinion papers that are either pass or fail. So far no one I know has failed one yet.
The best professor, if not the whole university, than in the whole philosophy dept. Very clear, test are clear and to the point.
He is clear and intersting. He lectures the whole class and makes some good points. His tests are based on his notes, but for some reason I had a hard time comprehending them becuase they are sometimes scattered. Most likely it is me though. He gives 6 easy pass/fail papers which he always passes you if it looks like you put effort into it.
this professor is the best one at st.john's. extremely clear with his notes and is very helpful to his students..makes you understand the material.
Awesome! The work for 1000 is simple-reading, a few essays, & a final paper... makes the material intersting. Really makes an impact on the way you think! Take him, you WILL look forward to going to class!! And he's pretty funny too! You must have a liking for philosophy to go beyond the core classes!! If not, take 1000 &3000 and be happy w/ it
he's the sweetest teacher. The way he teaches everything is crystal clear. the papers are so easy to do and hes extremely lenient in how he grades them. he is the best philosophy professor on campus! take him if you can!
He is the best in St johns. He explians everything fully and says the funniest things with a serious face. He know what hes talking about. I thought his overall grading was fair, hes just a little tough on the essays.Hes a great teacher.
enough said!
this guy is very knowledgeable but unfortunately it makes him boring and he repeats himself a lot..doesn't engage the class at all..very opinionated and a biased/difficult grader but i guess it depends on the person..he's not a very helpful person either..tests nd a difficult paper for a 1000 class..he wouldn't be my first choice..
He tends to put the class to sleep. He is extremely into what he does, which is evident in the way he speaks about philosophy, yet he is unable to engage the class in meaningful discussions. Instead, He lectures for 90% of the class time.
i got a d+. he gives 2 test (25 mult. choice & 3 essays), a 2 page paper, a 7 page paper, and the final. he takes attendance every day. he lectures throughout the class and tends to put u to sleep. i would avoid at all cost.
Don't take this professor if you're a Freshman or aren't serious about education. you need to be interested in what he has to say otherwise you will be so bored. He is however one of most intelligent people at St John's and is so worth getting confused once in a while and doing a little more work than normal
He is by far the best professor I ever had! I don't know why people are saying that he puts you to sleep because I had him last semester and participated in discussions every class. You have to try and keep up with the work, but he is very good at explaining and making philiosophy fun! I wish I had him this semester.Take his class!
I've had this professor for three different classes and he's absolutely brilliant. He's the most intelligent man you'll ever meet and he always has something interesting to talk about. He's a great guy.
He's a great guy. Really invested not only in the material, but making it comprehensibe for his students. I learned so much about metaphysics and even applying it to other material I was reading this semester! Monday night classes are bearable thanks to him! I got an A-, and I have no complaints.
Easy? Nice? What the hell are you guys talking about he is by far the worst teacher at SJU. He was rude and now entered a mid life crisis or something! He actually said "I dont wanna be known as an easy A on ratemy prof.com" Thats crazy aviod him at all costs. I am gonna light a candle at church for those who take him in the future!!!
He is by far the worst professor at St. Johns University. His grading is extremely diffucult, and the highest grade in my class was only a B-. his attendence was mandatory and everyone has to participate in the class. Sometimes he yells at the students and critizes them greatly. DONT TAKE HIM!!!!!I had taken him in the past and he had changed.
A very intelligent philosophy teacher. He knows his stuff. However his class is not easy at all. A few short take home essays. A difficult midterm and final and one term paper. Definitely not an easy A, be ready for a challenge.
very intelligent professor, he knows what he is talking about and you will learn a lot from him. he gives 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 paper, and several writing assignments. he is not easy but if you work hard you will get a good grade. attendance is mandatory, bring your laptop, his tests are based on notes. very interesting professor, kinda nerdy cute
Fairly nice guy, but not a good teacher. Dodges questions like Neo dodges bullets, refuses to hold any extended discussions on philosophical points - just says "we can talk about that when we cover X". Teaches philosophy like history - unchanging and based on memorization, not on thinking. He's not a harsh grader, though, I've gotten all As so far.
Hate his guts! He is the most conceited and sarcastic professor I've come across at STJ. AVOID!
i took him three times at St. John's. he's informed and interesting. class is mostly lecture but if take notes you will follow. Recommended.
he is a good lecturer. He know what he is talking about but is a boring class. But if you don't take notes your pretty much screwed.
Extremely intelligent and is very into philosophy. Take him if you want to learn, otherwise, you're going to have a tough time. Not too much reading, but the material is a little dense and takes time to understand. Exams are a little tricky though, so you do need to pay attention in class, take notes, and study a bit.
Best teacher I have ever had. I took this class once and had a horrible prof and failed, got this guy and got a B+, not because he is easy, because he knows his stuff and helps you if you ask for it.
Very into philosophy, but not wierd about it. Come to class actually trying to learn about philosophy, keep an open mind. If you come to the class expecting to hate it, you will. Otherwise he tries to make it fun and you will actually learn something. Lectures can get a tad boring. Tests and essays not bad if your prepared.
IMO: Very nice & approachable. Teaching style is strictly lecture but writes on the board often. Subject wasn't too hard, but his grading was a bit tough. I felt nothing I wrote was good enough, as he gave me a B- on everything. 2 small essays, 1 7pg paper, midterm & final; none too difficult, but multiple choice ?s on tests were tricky.
There are 4 graded assignment's, each one consist of 4 essays due every week. Lowest grade gets dropped when calculating the final grade. Each essay has a requirement of 400 word min but he really expects 800 and likes detail. Read the text, write thorough essays, post on the discussion board and you'll get the A,although it's not really an "easy A"
Only 5 weeks. 1 assignment per week. Just read the textbook and base essays on the reading. Comment in the discussion posts online. Pretty straightforward and everything is clearly outlined in the syllabus. Took this during Summer Session 1
He makes you read a chapter every week on a particular philosopher and then makes you write an essay on it with a focus on a few questions (minimum 400 words, slightly over 400 words means you get at most a B+ for the essay). Two longer essays (minimum 1250 words). If you put effort into your work and you back up your arguments, you should do fine
Overall not a bad guy but he sure is tough. You have 8 400word essays and two 1250word essays. To get a good grade you have to write a lot more than that. The chapters to read are very time consuming. He helps if you ask for it but be prepared to work really hard on your own. He grades very tough but is clear about what he wants.
Not gonna lie, this class was hard work. I didnt understand the textbook much, so the lectures were what got me the A. A big advice: Be there in class, turn off your laptop and take good notes. Pay attention to what he's saying because not everything is going to be written on the board.
The class is pretty easy. You have do little reading responses every week on Blackboard, there were 2 short essays, a 7 page paper, a midterm and a final. His lectures make the reading he assigns more understandable so attendance is definitely recommended.
Great guy, funny and humble. One discussion post a week, 3 short essays, a 7-page essay, a midterm and final. For someone who has a hard time understanding philosophy, I found this class easy to follow and the tests are based off exact questions he gives in class. For a metaphysics class with very few hard-to-understand arguments, take this guy!
Amazing professor! He's the best philosophy professor I had so far. Just pay attention in class and ask questions and you will get a good grade. He is pretty lenient with grading papers in my opinion as long as you include content that is mentioned in class in the paper along with examples that relate to the content you will get at least an A-.
Had him for Contemporary Phil - good teacher, but sometimes boring and hard to understand. 2 essays of 750 words, final essay of 1750 words, and in-class essays for mt and final, plus about 10 weekly bboard posts of a paragraph. Even with the readings done and perf attendance, this class made no sense to me at first, but it got better with time.
Got a A in this class without using textbook. Just pay attention to his class. If you skip, you'll fail! Make sure to go to his extra help and visit him during his office hours. He gives you the final essay question that will be on the midterm and final but GRADES HARSHLY. MAKES YOU WORK FOR IT. Many of his example on test is based on class notes.
Honestly, this class is boring. However Dr. G clearly cares about his students, and is friendly, and easy to speak with. You don't even need to read, just go to class, and take good notes. For the papers just repeat what he say and insert your own opinion. As long as you use terms that he uses in class you will get an A.
He is a very good guy and is pretty funny at times, but he is an extremely hard grader. There will be times where you think you got an A on a paper, but you'll end up with a C. You really just need to read the readings he provides on BB, go to lectures (IMPORTANT), & watch the videos on BB. Attend class, try to sit up front, & pay attention!
My man's a harsh grader. You would think if you met or exceeded his requirements for the essays you would get a good grade. Well, a B isn't a good grade, guy. It's a core class, relax. No one is trying to major in philosophy. Lots of reading requirements and weekly postings on blackboard. Best advised to take someone else for these core courses.
Professor Gyllenhammer clearly states what he wants to see from his students in his syllabus. Follow the structure and turn in work on time and you will be fine. Highly recommend this online class, specially if you don't want to sit in philosophy lectures . Fair grader,
Such a hard grader, assignments make zero sense. His essays require 500 words but in reality you need to write 1500 and you still probably won't get above a B. If he doesn't agree with your thesis he will get you to try and change it so its a thesis he agrees with. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, THE WORST CLASS EVER, STAY AWAY!!!!!!!
There's been some comments saying he's a harsh grader. He really ISN'T. You can get a good grade on the short papers if you are very focused (key word: FOCUSED) on your topic. Don't think that writing more will get you a better grade. It won't. A longer mess is just that, a longer mess. You don't really have to read the textbook, just go to class.
He's not bad but does kind of lose me when he talks a lot about ethics. Don't get me wrong i like a passionate prof but i think he overdoes it a bit much. Overall, a good guy and seems to genuinely want to help you. Grade is based off three papers, midterm and final, and reflections. Says no one visits him during office hours so go do that.
You can tell he knows what he's talking about when it comes to ethics and he connects it to the world outside. Papers were not bad, just know what you're writing about and be focused. Easy to talk to and wants students to pass.
Dr. Gyllenhammer is a great professor. Going to class is not only mandatory but essential if you want to make sure you get all the notes. As long as you pay attention, you'll do great in his class. There are 3 papers throughout the semester, but he gives you all the information you need to write them. Not a tough grader. Would recommend
The workload isn't bad at all, discussion board posts every other week and 750-1000 word paper due every other week (on weeks with no discussion board). That's literally it so all in all not difficult, he's just a harsh grader on papers considering this is a core class. Super average online class experience.
He is not a bad choice. We mostly wrote essays and did discussions. All readings were free online and given to us which I really liked. He is nice and is reachable.
Gyllenhammer is NOT clear about his essay requirements and is extremely harsh when it comes to grading essays which make up the majority of your grade. I wrote the same caliber of essays in Metaphysics and got better grades than in Ethics. I advise against taking Gyllenhammer because he is an extremely harsh grader.
Ive taken gyllenhammer twice now and he is very consistent in the way he runs the class. It is not hard, you just have to understand the material and he even gives extra videos from YouTube to explain things in a different way from him. Theres 2 discussion questions for each philosopher, then a paper due the following week. Very reasonable.
Wonderful Man and great professor. Clearly puts forth a valiant effort and really tries to make the class interesting. Grading is straight forward and if you try you'll get an A. Would recommend it to anyone.
Professor Gyllenhammer is awesome. He gives interesting lectures but you don't have to pay attention to do well because he posts so many resources. His criteria for papers is very clear, he is flexible, and always available for extra help. I don't like philosophy but I ended up enjoying this class and learning so much.
gave three papers, a midterm and a final. Discussion posts every week but gives time in class to do it. Sounds like a lot of work but it really is not, doesnt take attendance
A pretty nice professor and topics were interesting. Some of the readings were really long but he gave a good amount of time to do every assignment. Definitely a strict grader but you can do well if you're a good writer and really make sure you understand the material and you'll be fine. Not the hardest class but definitely not the easiest either.
Ruined my 4.0 because the 3 essays count for 50 percent of the grade. Talks to much, belittles students religion. Says hes not bias but clearly displays his bias. Tough tough tough grader, but follow his (confusing) directions and you should be able to do ok. Always dread this class.
Hes actually horrible. He has no consideration for anything and he will ruin your G.P.A. He is the absolute worst
I'm not a philosophy guy so take this with a grain of salt. He is a nice guy and very passionate about the subject, he tries his best to engage the class but its kind of hard to have that dynamic in a class of 30-40 people. Participate as much as you can, as far as philosophy classes go there are way worse ones out there. He was good.
The guy loves to hear himself speak, doesnt really engage with the students much. Ethics is something that I was passionate about, but he really left me disengaged for a significant portion of the course. He has essays that are extremely hard to get above a B, B+ on; I am a published bioethicist, which is meaningless if in disagreement with him.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. The course consists of writing a paper one week and 2 discussion board posts due beforehand. His rubric is unclear on what it wants you to do as well as he doesn't allow the use of outside sources for your papers except for the ones he provides. He is an extremely tough grader and he essentially kills your GPA.
This is probably one of the better options when it comes to philosophy classes. There was a discussion board post one week and then an essay the next week. A lot of time is given to read the materials and do the assignments. But he can be a super tough grader so beware of that. Readings can also take some time to get through.
Professor Gyllenhammer was one of the best professors I've had. I actually enjoyed his lectures- they were interesting and he made philosophy relatable. He was easy to understand as long as you payed attention. Write everything he writes down; it will be useful for your papers and exams. Really easy class if you put in the effort!
a lot of work and its genuinely time consuming but I dont mind writing essays that much so it was worth not going in person. hes definitely a tough grader but a few papers in i had the hang of it and was getting all A's. hes understanding and gives a lot of time to do assignments so just put like 3 hours a week to the side for this and youre good
He is a very hard grader on your essays that you have weekly. He provides little to no feedback.
his grading system makes absolutely no sense. his instructions for essays are vague and is very critical and a harsh grader. i put hours into the essays but the grade his grading is awfully unfair. he killed my GPA when i needed this course to be a gpa booster.
If you want an A, don't take this class if you're unwilling to read around 30-45 pages and write 1200+ word essays every 2 weeks. If you clearly answer the questions he asks from the textbooks and other sources he provides, it is very easy to hit that limit. You just need to put a lot of hours into familiarizing yourself with the sources.
Professor Gyllenhammer makes philosophy engaging, even for non-philosophy majors. His lectures are informative and he's passionate about the subject. Attend class, do the readings, and utilize resources like unstuckstudy for study prep - you'll do well!
The class felt like a million years because he talks a lot. There is no textbook or notes on canvas, it's you taking notes from whatever he says. His papers were straightforward. Please put effort into them they will save your grade. SHOW UP TO EVERY FRIDAY CLASS and please do the discussion boards they also save you. He was alright overall
It's feels like a long class since he's yapping the whole time with no engagement at all. He cares a lot abt attendance tho and the essays are super unclear it has to wow him to get a decent grade. if u just do the discussion board and the 3 essays of the semester you'll be fine he also gives a review sheet of what's gonna be on the mid and final
