reasonably clear, sometimes repetitive, hilarious, but gives killer tests
Can't even pass his own tests! Hard tests.
the exam was death - thank goodness for bell curves

Organic Chem... Need I say more?? EtOH anyone??
Worst prof ever!!!
He confused the hell out of me. Engaging, with a "devil may care" attitude...but this is one tough class, regardless of the prof!
Unable to make tests at approprate level. *shrug* "Sh*t happens" isn't an appropriate response to a 53% average on midterm. Can't give answer to questions the other prof teching the course wrote-if they only accept one answer to each question, shouldn't the prof at least be able to come up with it?
Runs around the from of the class rambling on about you don't know what since he never properly introduces a topic. You figure out what he's talking about half way through it. God forbid you ask him a question, or he'll ramble on about something unrelated for 15 min. Helpful after class though!
He's actually a much easier marker than Valliant, gives marks for anything. And very, very funny. I enjoyed him.
Very, very funny - and a fairly decent prof to boot. Love the alcohol jokes. Tough course though.
Great prof. Course is hell.
I thought he was a great prof. Really approachable. Nice guy.
I never heard such dirty language coming from a teacher! Mac is a great school and I don't expect anything less than professional profs. He's soooo boring and never quite understands when you ask a question.
Always at least 1 hilarious moment/comment per lecture. Disorganized with concepts. BUT he does make rounds to the labs/help centres to check up on students. Agree with the other person, can't make tests at an appropriate level for the course. Too hard.
SKIPS SLIDES TOO OFTEN during lectures... made me feel like he wasn't explaining things to the fullest. Not a very good lecturer overall, hard to follow his train of thought.
Gives a brutally hard midterm and an insanely impossible final. All questions are connected, so if you can't get the first part of a question, and the last question asks you to draw a detailed mechanisms of your final reaction, you're screwed!! A VERY difficult class. Use your textbook because it is surprisingly really good.
Not a very good teacher. Would skip several slides at a time and say they weren't important. Always swore, which apparently is funny. His tests were verbatim from old tests, so using old tests as a study guide work well.
One of the worst.
Lectures were disorganized and confusing. His testing is ridiculously hard. Studied very hard but he makes it impossible to do well in the course.
This professor makes hard tests, confuses people when he teaches because he skips slide constantly. If he tells you something that is not going to be on the test, then make sure you study that. Good luck.
Literally said something would not be on the final exam and then it showed up on the final. Helpful if you confront him in person but don't try asking "extension" questions with him, he'll simply say "I don't know" or tell you it's not relevant to the course. Lectures are very poor because he skips SO many slides. Textbook is a must.
This professor lacks the ability to teach this course properly and thoroughly. He skips slides very often and he can't even answer questions that were on his assignments.
The textbook teaches better than the professor himself. He frequently skips slides, which causes a lot of confusion. He also makes extremely hard tests.
This professor simply cannot teach, he just reads what is on the powerpoint slides without explaining any relevant detail. Also, he makes HARD tests.
He skips through slides like there's no tomorrow. So I suggest just read the textbook.
Disorganized, confusing and hard.
He isn't as good as the chem profs in first year, but he is nice.
he is actually a very nice person and helpful in class. i once spent 2 hours in his office, he missed his lunch to help. however his classes are pointless and replaceable by the textbook. His exam is impossible only because it is unfair. like walking into a english exam and finding out its actually a math exam.
Fair midterm, impossible exam. It's just a matter of trying to get every part mark no matter how much you understand the material. But as a prof, he's enthusiastic which is good but sometimes he goes so slow that he has to rush at the end, and that's when it gets bad.
BRUTAL prof, terrible teacher & skips slides, skips questions. Exams are absolutely impossible and he purposely tries to screw you over. Textbook is an absolute must
Very awkward. Makes extremely unfair tests and cannot teach.
His tests are very undoable
Skips through slides during lecture. Stuck 2 chapters in on the last day of class. Impossible exam. Good luck.
His lectures were dull and somewhat useless. Reading the textbook was essential. His tests were easy and exam was fair if you put effort into this class. Tutorials were lifesavers!
The course itself has lots of content and necessitates a CONCEPTUAL approach (DON'T MEMORIZE). The assignments and midterms were fair (may be even easy) BUT the exam is very difficult as the material covered is extensive. He is a mediocre lecturer and in retrospect I would have benefited more if I has simply read the book and not gone to class
I don't understand why people don't like Harrison! His exams are tough, definitely, but ultiamtely doable. I loved going to his lectures because he is really funny and enjoyable. Yes, you have to read the textbook, because it's a content heavy course and he doesn't have time to go through each detail in class. Overall, great prof.
Paul Harrison, in my opinion, is a pretty good professor! If you go to class, and pay attention to what he is lecturing about, you will do just fine. He is a pretty nice guy, and likes to help out people when they need it, as well as try and lighten the mood in class when things get dull, with a joke or two. If you just practice, you will be fine
Not a very good prof...more useful one-on-one (but still not very good). As the course went on, his lecturing worsened and he became harder to follow. The midterm was not easy, but fair. He writes a brutal final exam, though...He really expects too much out of us. Textbook definitely helped in understanding the concepts, so buy it.
Harrison skips all the complicated concepts while focusing on those that are straightforward (which we already know). I recommend reading the textbook, it was a lot more helpful. His tests are also extremely difficult, and assignments often mis-marked.
Harrison really isn't as bad of a prof as people make him out to be! His tests are difficult, sure, but never unfair. Orgo is a difficult subject after all. He is usually available for questions outside class and is a pretty nice guy. In class, he does a fairly good job at covering general concepts while keeping a light mood. Textbook is a must.
BEST PROF EVER! not no matter how hard you study, you still fail.
Hates aspiring med school & and dental school bound students. Wants you stay forever with him smoknig ciggaretes and eating potato chips. TEXTBOOK is essential to getting a B
Contrary to many reviews here, I enjoyed Harrison's orgo lectures. The material itself is quite challenging and readings are essential. I think he does a decent job at engaging the class and reinforcing important concepts. Plus his random jokes lighten up the mood.
Don't take it at Mac. Either take it online at Athabasca with lab component done at mac, or take it at york in the summer. Harrison is awful, tests are obnoxious. Don't understand how this course still hasn't been changed. It will kill your GPA. You have been warned.
Paul Harisson ignited my passion to stay in organic chemistry. I am now working for him in his lab where he is testing a novel anti-perspirant. Obviously its not going so well.
The tests are extremely hard (it is organic chemistry what else do you expect) but this prof is easy to understand, hilarious, willing to answer questions and genuinely seems like he wants his students to do well. The course is hard, not him.
Use your textbook. This guy paces and sweats more than a marathon runner. He does make jokes and tries to be engaging but it is organic chemistry. The midterm was impossible, the exam I didn't even finish. But the labs are great and actually fun. If you are not good at chem, you won't do well. I remember crying over this class a lot. Don't do it.
worst prof i've had
Dr. Harrison regurgitates the textbook, at a fast pace. Midterm was fair. Assignments were difficult. Final Exam was extremely difficult, have many impossible questions. Practice problems in the textbook helped understand concepts. However Labs were fun as you got to learn and practice many new techniques.
Horrible man who takes pleasure in ruining peoples GPAs, and an even worse professor with zero teaching capabilities.
Lectures--PAY ATTENTION and GO. Don't go to just chat with your friends. Give him the chance and attention and the less you'll have to learn by yourself. Labs--easy to pass. GO TO THE CHEM HELP CENTER. THEY WILL BE YOUR SAVING GRACE. Do the assignments, iClickers and tutorials --it'll make studying for the exam easier.
He's a cool guy, but you learn way more from the textbook than his lectures. Marking for short answers was surprisingly lenient. All his tests are doable if you put the work into it (aside from that one really difficult question every test). Not the best prof I've had, but the course is not as bad as people say it is.
He's a funny prof, and explains concepts well. It's a difficult course, so idk why people are blaming him for it. In my opinion, I enjoyed the course. As long as you study hard and devote more time to this course, you'll do just fine.
I enjoyed his lectures - he jokes around a lot. He explains everything well, but you MUST read the textbook. It's organic chemistry; you gotta really grind in this course to get a high mark, no matter what prof it is. Lol at the people who didn't work hard enough and hate on him afterwards.
hes a tough prof but really wants you to learn organic chem well. lectures were really interesting and he makes concepts really clear. i didnt even have to use much of the textbook. highly recommend this guy
Brilliant man. I highly recommend this prof, as his knowledge in chemistry is just as excellent as his skills at teaching.
funniest prof ive had. his tests and exams are i think really fair. they seem difficult but it is because it is orgo chem but he does a sufficient job of preparing you for it. he was my favourite chem teacher. only problem is sometimes he digresses from the lecture content to talk about things like the discoveries of unrelated chemicals, etc.
Inspirational man. I was considering switching out of engineering into some chemistry major just to have this man teach me some more.
Paul was a decent teacher, his tests were unfair, and difficult, but his exams are reasonable. He tests mostly HARDER questions which can be made easy with a VERY good grasp of basic concepts, and proper logic. Overall, expect to practice, and read a lot to do well in his class (Organic Chemistry for Dummies was very helpful).
if you're already bad at chem like I am, if you take this course with him you're going to cry. Extremely difficult, he told us he would curve us because class ave was like 52 on the midterm. Guess what, he didn't curve the class after. don't take this. save yourself. go to york. change your degreee. change schools.
Great guy, really strange way of talking but really mostly cause he gets sidetracked. Funny guy in a lot of different ways, partially because all he does is teach now and you can tell he hasnt been in the lab in years. Fantastically funny mannerisms and relatable cynicism that you tend to only hear from students. Never found a single class hard.
Enroll in his course!
A really good guy with a unique sense of humor.
Definitely the best person to take orgo with. I easily got an A in his course with knowledge from first year chemistry and 2 days of studying before the exam
Despite all the negative reviews he gets for teaching a difficult course, Dr. Harrison explained concepts clearly and obviously wants the best for his students! His lectures are straightforward and he's very open to meeting with students to help them out. A great prof, and I would take his course again.
Does not provide a text book, disorganized, unprofessional, scatter brained and extremely difficult tests. Overall the worst professor Ive ever had.
I did find that he rushed the more novel concepts while explaining the fundamentals in more detail. But, he was very helpful in answering questions and was always available after class. I did sense somewhat of a condescending "this is too easy for me" vibe when he would skip slides and brush over concepts but overall he was nice and approachable.
His lectures were somewhat helpful but sometimes he would ramble on and on to the point where you lose attention and forget what hes talking about. He rushes through the important content, so you need to teach yourself sometimes. The test and exams are THE WORST! One test question was from a topic we didnt even learn... would never take again
very cool guy, super nice when he visits during lab, ppl are just hatin cuz they r doing bad in orgo lmao. honestly have to give him 5 stars for standing in MDCL lecturing by himself during the coronavirus shut down just to make the podcasts :'( makes me sad just thinking about it
Super nice and cares a lot about students. Very knowledgeable and explains well, but also makes sure that everyone understands the content. The only reason he has any bad reviews is probably because the content is difficult, but as a prof hes great
Absolutely amazing professor! He made organic chemistry highly interesting for me. Engaging lectures.
I was honestly terrified for Orgo but tbh he made me not hate it, Orgo lectures were the only lectures I found interesting and bearable during this pandemic semester. The class does require a lot of work and effort but as long as you're willing to put it in you'll do well.
I was pretty scared going into orgo 1 but now that Ive completed it, it wasnt too bad. Professor Harrison is so awesome and him and Kylie did an amazing job for the fall 2020 semester. Def the best chem prof Ive had at Mac so far. Also his accent keeps the lectures more interesting lol
I was really scared because orgo had a bad reputation as being a GPA killer but Professor Harrison made this class super memorable. The course was very well organized by the whole team. Dr. Harrison is super nice, caring, and a great professor. He made orgo more enjoyable compared to gen chem in first year. The textbook is also very helpful.
Paul Harrison was an incredible prof! There was a lot of content to learn, however he was able to keep it fun and engaging. The course was a lot of work, but Dr. Harrison made it possible to excel. While his tests can be hard, as concepts must be applied in new situations, they were definitely fair if you had done the work.
I think some people give negative reviews because of the course itself and the content. Organic chem is difficult, but Dr. Harrison is a very clear lecturer and has entertaining lectures as well.
Not sure why some people gave him a bad rating. He is a really good professor who wants his students to fully understand the material and succeed in the course. Definitely would recommend taking chem 2Oa3 with him.
People are giving him bad reviews because he teaches a hard course. He teaches extremely well and there's lots of opportunity to ask questions/do practice. He really really knows his stuff. Very funny and it doesn't distract. My only complaint: the pre-recorded lectures were extremely long and a hassle to go through. Denser&shorter would be better
Dr. Harrison is a great prof. The lectures are long but it's because he tries explaining as in-depth as possible. Makes Organic Chem a little bit tolerable. He also makes some funny jokes.
He is amazing
Hard course.
Organic chemistry is a tough subject, but Harrison is truly a passionate and caring prof. He encourages asking questions and will always send detailed answers, unlike many profs... Also, just overall a fun and charming guy.
