Awesome class...tough marker but VERY effective teacher, very helpful and makes class interesting, smart guy...you get the idea ;)
if your not an idiot, take his class.
It took me a few weeks to warm up to his style but once I did I really enjoyed his class. An excellent facilitator. Totally recommended!
he lets his personal feelings get in the way of his teaching, teaches at an english 10 level, and the way that he marks is deceiving.
Clear and engaging teacher, though he does expect a lot from students. A sharp marker, but you're good to go after a course with him. Enjoys discussion in his classes. You'll remember what you learned, that's for sure.
Very interesting and creative instructor! He is really helpful and gives students a lot of time to come and see him. Expects a lot of in-class participation. Understands what it is like to be a student: doesn't make you buy the most expensive books, gives rewrites on essays. Good guy. I'd suggest him
he's a good teacher. In his class you only have to do 3 essays, and 3 quizes which are easy. He picks very interesting novels and plays to read, makes it an interesting class. I recommend him!
Hard marker but gives you lots of time to revise previous essays and see him for help.
Paul Headricks class "Eng 1127" teaches essay writing to first year students in a pleasant environment. The first month of the class reveals that Paul is a very inteligent man who is pasionate for teaching and enjoys interesting class discussion. I learned alot in this class, If you are lazy don't i
Very clear engaging teacher. Hard marker and lets you figure out what you are doing wrong which is frustrating but effective. Helpfull in and out of class. Very intersting but challenging. Take this course if you want to learn and aren't afraid of a bad mark.
Paul Headrick is definetly a superb professor. He is a pretty hard marker but makes things as easy as he can for you. For example, he will take time out to explain anything that needs clarafication. Overall, just an awesome professor. I enjoyed having him for English which is a subject I dont enjoy.
Paul Headrick is a very good teacher. He is the most helpful teacher I have ever had in my life. He makes you pay attention in his class by keeping your interest and motivating you to do better. He chooses to be a tough marker because he knows his students can to better. Totally recommend him.
Very helpful,

Dr.Headrick is charming-fragrance of his presence.Unique, interesting, but very challenging, and hard marker.Helpful in and out of class.Be ready to get bad marks, but be also willing to learn and improve-he gives you chance. He values more clear and well-stuctured over creative essays.I admire him and
be nice to us, everyone dies, there are only good names of us ,remain..please be a little good marker and help the students who work hard.
I have taken Paul for both my first year English courses and he is just absolutely amazing. I didn't get the best marks but hes very fair. Yes, hes a hardmarker so dont take his course if your looking for easy marks. He will take time to explain things and it was just a pleasure having him as a teac
I hasd a wonderful time in his class. He is a very patient and well spoken teacher. I highly recommend taking one of his classes. Out of the 20 different teachers I have had at Langara he rates in the top 3.

He's intense so it takes a while to warm up to him. His lectures remind me a little of a sermon! Surprisingly though, his style is effective. He's very focussed, as well as energetic and engaging, so it's easy to pay close attention and learn. The time he spends helping his students is admirable. Nice, though 'hard marker' is an understatement.
He explains clearly, and is helpful in his office hours. I hope he recognizes who studies hard and who does not, I also hope him to be fair in his marking. By the way, he is good looking, when he smiles, other wise he is scary.
He is very helpful during the office hours and it is really important. He also cares about his students .he is a kind man, but does not show it … negative point: he is a hard marker.
I believe if he were to mark the papers he would be EASIER then the marker. The essays he showed us and gave them a mark was much more higher then what we recieved in the class. All I can say is GOOD LUCK!!
Very boring class. I hated the readings. Not an easy marker.
he is a kind man and have a nice smile. explains very clearly, and a very helpful teacher.
Dr. Paul is an awesome teacher. There is no way I would have survived any of my english classes without his incredibly clear and interesting help. If you're scared of him, suck it up, stop being such a wuss and ask for help. And he really rocks the Langara Monk.
Mr.Headrick is so energetic and animated. I really enjoyed his class. He made it so easy to pay attention and learn. I would take another class with him in a second.
He tries to be clear. The readings are just annoying and depressing. He doesn't mark the papers and his marker is a b*** with offending comments from time to time. Honestly, there are way better teachers out there. Baker as a matter of fact. Take Headrick only if you are very confident in your english abilities. Therefore ESL students BEWARE!!
He is a very kind and open minded teacher; he respects and listens to every student. He explains and speaks very clearly. he also chooses very interesting novels, plays, and poems to study.Overall a very nice English teacher and a bit hard marker but helpful in office hours.
Very patient instructor; esp b/c most students seemed to have trouble with basics such as grammar and puctuation. Very specific with what he wants. If you want a good mark you have to go to his office hour
a very unclear and unhelpful prof.
So so so so difficult! I don't know why he always said that he didn't understand my essay.
he's a tough marker. 7/22 dropped the class by the end of term. but very clear on the instruction and about what he expects. i'm an ESL student, i followed what he said and i got B's. he's serious but somehow most of us find a way to joke him up. once he said he sings like a cat being tortured... just to show us that's a metaphor... OMG!
He is a reasonable man!
He is very helpful if you have any questions after class hours. Cares about students and never belittles their answers. My first language is english and I found this course difficult, but he tries to keep it interesting, and include all the students!
I believe in order to do well in any course, there needs to be two components that work well together. 1) A student that will work to achieve grades up to their standards and 2) An instructor that can direct you to the right path. Dr. Headrick is the best instructor, if you work hard. If you do your part you will gain from his excellent teachings.
Taking his class right now. Straight off the bat, VERY HARD MARKER. So be prepared! But well worth it because I have learned a lot from his class. He teaches well and tells you exactly what he wants. I strongly suggest people go to him for extra help. He will basically tell you what you are doing wrong and help you fix it. But VERY HARD MARKER!!!
Well his class is not easy! He is a good teacher - very engaging and interesting, but it is IMPERATIVE that you go to his classes and get extra help from him. He calls it an optional tutorial, but you would be insane not to go - Hence my crap grade. But, I have learned from my mistakes and can see, his difficult grading is worth it. You learn a lot
Very nice teacher. You MUST go to every single class though and if you struggle with english you should also visit him in his office or the tutorial. He is very helpful when you go see him and it definetly will help your grade--HARD MARKER
Fabulous instructor. Really tough but totally fair marker.
VERY HARD MARKER--a cool prof but I didn't learn anything from him in terms of literature. He might be good at teaching essay writing, but definitely not literature.
Paul Headrick is an engaging, illuminating and passionate instructor. He is crystal clear about what he expects, so if you can produce decent sentences, just apply them to his Method, and you'll fly in this course. Wasn't expecting an English course to be this riveting. Hard marker, apparently, but I was very happy with mine :)
very strict marker. Wants exactly the same on paper ...what's there in his head. Tough one....
VERY HARD MARKER, dont be fooled by the happy face beside his name like i was, hes a cool teacher and all but i guarantee u he will make you work hard just to even pass!
A great proff. He is hard on his students becuase he wants them to learn. I suggest taking a course with him if you can. He's entertaining and makes class fun.
Dreamy intellect. He gives great lectures and has a charismatic teaching style. He is quite tough; expect difficult assignments. He emphasizes the fact that the course is supposed to be challenging. I found it quite helpful and enjoyable to speak with him during his office hours. I would recommend taking any of his courses.
fantastical.
Passionate teacher who genuinely wants to help students become better writers and understand the readings covered by the course. Yes, a hard marker but that is to be expected by college. Gives useful feedback. I waited over a year to take another one his courses as he is that good a prof. Humourous, intelligent and well worth taking.
A super semester! If you are serious about improving your writing skills take Paul?s courses. He is very reasonable, helpful, and to the point with a genuine interest in the students progress. Whenever a student raises his or her hand with a question, Paul always shuts up, no matter what he is saying, and gives the student the right away. Now this
This prof is an extremely hard marker. I failed most of the essay assignments and the only thing I passed before the final exam was the midterm exam. However, I believe if you come to every class and put effort in your work, he will pass you. I failed most of the assignment and still passed the class in the end. If you want to learn take this prof.
hard marker but good teacher, makes his classes interesting.
Great prof! As long as you use his method, and attend class you should do well. Anytime I needed clarification or help with an essay all I had to do was email him and I got a response same day. Plus he has tutorials, and office hours for extra help. To do poorly in his class I'm assuming its because your illiterate.
Paul was awesome; he had the corniest straight-faced humour ever and it was fun. Really helped with essay skills. His manner of speaking is funny too--like someone you'd hear on the radio or TV.
He's a great instructor. Very knowledgeable and intersting. Very picky on marking! He will give you help if you visit his office hour. If you are international student and your english level is not good enough, it's better not to have his class. Anyway, he's good teacher.
good teacher, EXTREMLY HARD MARKER. tour essays have to be written exactly how it is said in his formula for essay, if u dont write it that way its a fail. pretty much sucks if you dont write his way. good teacher. to hard of a marker for a first year english class, dont recommend him if your going to your first year english class!
Paul is a passionate teacher who really loves what he does. His lectures are informative with some good humor thrown in. As long as you read his "Method" and see him outside class, you can get a good grade. Learned more from his one class than I have in my entire life.
Paul is an extrememly passionate teacher, he enjoys what he teaches and tries to pass on that passion onto his students. His lectures are VERY useful and informative (altho sometimes it can be boring) His markings are hard and specfic, but you should be fine if you listen to him and ask him for help outside of class time.
Paul is an excellent instructor. His intellect is refreshing and his ability to give clear, applicable lectures is above any other English instructor I've had. His obvious passion for the subject is inspiring and I found him very encouraging in a subdued way. He's a tough but fair marker. Plan on putting in the work & doing your reading!
hes a very hard marker! you need to be careful with your essay because he is very picky!!! overall, he is not good as a teacher if you want a decent mark!
Far too often I felt as though he would give us an amazing essay writing tip SECONDS after handing it in. Had we received it the previous class, a higher grade would've been guaranteed. Other than that, he's excellent. Tough marker, but he gives you the tools to do better. Expect to spend a lot of time on each assignment. Fun class.
Thinkers beware. Deviation from Headrick format, useless elsewhere, is an auto-fail. Structure and punctuation infinitely more important than insight about Lit. If you're a robot who enjoys fill-in-blank mad-lib according to prescribed style sheet, this course is for you. Wrote own $45 required text. However, very helpful and clear on demands.
I think he's an amazing teacher, although he's a hard marker! I had him for my first year English at Langara, and I found his lectures amazing and helpful! he's very passionate towards teaching, and that plays a great role in an instructor's teaching method! Dr. Paul Headrick is great and I recommend him to anyone who is willing to work hard!
Paul is the man! He is hard, but he tells you EXACALLY what he wants. He doesn't mince words. Very methodical and logical. His class will dramatically improve your essay skills and writing skills in general. But whatever you do, dont ask for a stapler when handing in a paper, and DONT call him MR. Headlock! lol. ur the man paul. respect.
Follow his method exactly! He insists that the method is transferrable to other subjects but so far, other than his tips for conclusion paragraphs, I haven't found that to be true. It is a logical structure however, and Headrick teaches it with patience and good-humor. Brush up on your Bob Dylan, because he loves to quote his songs :D Fun class
Paul is an excellent teacher. His lectures are captivating and he is very helpful. He replies quickly to emails, and offers assistance during office hours as well as at the writing help center. Go to class, contact him, and incorporate the examples he gives in class into your essays.
He knows his stuff inside out and is very passionate about it. Really makes you appreciate the subject, even if you hate lit. Because he's a really hard marker, I wouldn?t recommend him to anyone trying to get their lit requirements out of the way (GPA dropper), but if you're looking to be an English major, he will help you a lot.
dude... paul is the best english prof ever! what i liked about him was the essay structure he made us follow. it was basic, but really helpful. i felt like i really improved my essay writing. take dr. paul!
Can be difficult at times, and I imagine it would have been harder for me if I wasn't already fairly good at writing, but he was very clear and I learned a lot. He wrote his own textbook, and also wrote an excellent novel called "That Tune Clutches My Heart"
Awesome prof!
Great teacher and his classes are funny and entertaining. You have to go to the classes to really understand what he is teaching but so worth listening to him. Best English Teacher I have ever had and would take another course with him in a heartbeat
Best english teacher I've ever had. He understands the material so well, and he gives a very useful method for writing essays. His class isn't easy (I took 1128) but it's probably worth the challenge since I've been told 1129/1130 is much more challenging. Headrick only teaches at Langara in the summer though, bummer.
Great teacher, cares about his students. The work is extremely challenging but he is very good prof to have, if you go to class and put effort into your work. He's freakishly smart and kind of funny
inclass essay = 10%. final exam = 25%. If you do not pass the inclass essay you must get 100% on your final in order to pass the class. It is a silly requirement that basically makes all work done after failing the in class essay worthless, forcing you to drop the class. He is a super nice guy,HATES late comers. Not recommended to new students
Follow the format and structure from his textbook religiously and you should be fine. If you attend every class and pay attention, it will be extremely obvious what the questions on the tests will be since he puts extra extra emphasis on certain key points for each text. I found that he marks a lot harder on essays but a lot easier on the tests.
As previously mentioned: "Follow the format and structure from his textbook religiously and you should be fine. If you attend every class and pay attention, it will be extremely obvious what the questions on the tests will be since he puts extra extra emphasis on certain key points for each text." Tests are marked easily, essays are not. He's hot.
Paul is the best English professor at Langara. His lectures are very informative and clear. He has a good sense of humour and usually stays on topic. Calls on people to speak. He's easy to approach and talk to, but he is a tough marker.
he's awesome! passionate and intense!! scary sometimes but all good! For those of you who can't attend his class at least you can still buy his book.
After taking many English professors at Langara, I have come to the conclusion that Paul is the best. Yes,he is a very strict marker and focuses on structure, but his lectures are filled with fountains of knowledge and he is never rude to any of his students. In my opinion he gives students the mark that they deserve.
This prof. is very intelligent. He should be teaching at Oxford or at least UBC.
A great teacher, highly recommended to anyone who is actually concerned with improving their essay-writing abilities and not just looking for an easy pass. His comments are very helpful, his lectures are packed with relevant information, and he's easy-going and friendly to boot. I feel my writing skills have concretely improved thanks to Paul.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He is extremely knowledgeable about his material and obviously cares deeply for the English language. I sweated in his class but benefitted from the writing techniques and now have more concise and clear writing. Highly recommend him as an instructor.
Great Teacher, smart, knows his stuff. VERY HARD MARKER. Half the class dropped before the drop date... Follows his instructions to a T and you will do okay. Not used to his style so I tanked. Write the way HE wants and youre okay.
Headrick is very passionate about English. His lectures are clear and often inspirational. You need to follow his standards and format in your essay writing as he is very particular about that. The only con in being in his class is that you have to be prepared because he picks random people and it can be humiliating if you're a sensitive person.
First term at langara, this is my first instructor after transferring from Douglas. I really enjoy Paul's class, he's passionate and inspirational. He's a tough marker and if you don't do the homework you could get pretty screwed in class; because he'll call whoever he wants out when he wants a question answered.
Extremely knowledgeable and passionate. Really cares about the success of his students and is always available during office hours to help out. He's pretty funny as well.
Loved this course. Learned so much about literature and writing essays. I would highly recommend him if you are serious about English. If you are not fluent in English, I wouldn't take this course. His marking is fair, he is not as tough as people make him out to be here. If you follow guidelines, you will be fine.
Paul is a great person! He is very intellectual and is good at what he does. However, he is an incredibly hard marker. As a first year English course I'd expect him to be a bit more lenient, but that wasn't the case. I was in for a surprise when I got 50% on my first essay. But I did improve to a B- by the end of the semester. He's a cool guy.
Brilliant mind.
He may seem intimidating at first but you'll warm up to him. It was really helpful to take his course, you'll learn a lot. Great lectures and tutorial classes are nice. Very clear on what will be happening every single class. Prepares you well for any future essay writing. This summer will be his last semester teaching before he retires so...!
He is definitely the greatest and toughest English professor at Langara College.
He's a passionate intellectual who cares about his students. He is a great speaker and his lectures are always stimulating. I started out with a C- and moved up to a B. He definitely makes you work for it, but if you do put in the work, you will do well.
Don't take his class.
Tough prof in that he will make you work your butt off to even get a C+. He's intense. But you will learn more from this one prof than all your other English profs combined. Good luck Paul. I'm keeping your book forever, because it is so helpful. The binding is falling apart because I scroll through it so often.
It's been a few semesters but he is still my favourite prof.
He's the guy who wrote the essay writing book all your english professors assign to you. That's how you know.
HORRIBLE experience!!!!! Paul gave me an F on my paper, I checked with another professor and she said my paper deserves at least a C+!!! Save your time and money, take a course with a different prof!!
