Very interesting teacher, slightly biased against foreign students.
He's a genuinely nice guy, I liked him so much that I took a couple of different classes from him. He's pretty funny too but you have to attend class pretty much every day to do well. He is very intelligent and even writes his own textbooks.
I thought Mr. Herrick was great. His classes were interesting and he graded fairly. Very funny man - made the time go quickly.
He is an awesome professor who will really challenge your asusmptions about the way you think. In addition, he gives you the tools to just analyze the world around you in a practical manner.
Herrick is very smart and presents all sides of issues, including inviting in people who disagree with him as guest lecturers. Much better than the other Philosophy professor, Linda Warren, who teaches her personal opinions as facts. He also grades easy.
Very clear and very thoughtful communication.
Man, I don't have enough room here to write how cool this guy is! Paul is more help than you'll need in an instructor and he's very open to others' opinions, plus he's more than willing to explain where his philosophy is coming from.
Paul is an AMAZING teacher, and I thoroughly enjoyed his class!
So easy and boring that I dropped the class. Zero challenge Zero interest, completely blah to the point I would rather fail than do the work.
easy class, however he was not interested in teaching, he was lazy, and unmotivated...but easy grader and easy class..very leniant..
The only prof. at SCC worthy to remember.
Herrick is the most boring teacher I've ever had. I had him for philosiphy of religion, wich I understood to cover all religions but he would only allow us to talk about "God" in the general sense, and seemed to not acknowledge that there were d
Very good teacher, very active class discussions all of which were allowed and valid. Discussed many aspects of ethics and its basis. Easy work load, but engaging and interesting. I liked going to this class and I liked Herrick's teaching.

Very boring and annoying teacher. Complains a lot and constantly gets off topic.
Loved this class, Herrick made it fun. He is a very understanding prof. His book explained the subject well as I took this as an online class. Fair teacher in all
Very Good Teacher. He was fair and understanding. I did not think he was boring at all. I would recommend him.
great teacher, very good at explaining abstract concepts and moral issues.
worthless
I really enjoyed his class. He's a great teacher, and ALWAYS made me laugh. I took his Phil 106, which is Intro to logic. I found that some students got 4.0 and others not so much, but overall if you did the work you'd do quite well. (easily over 3.0)One last thing, there's plenty resources to help with this class(Lectures, dvd, powerpoints, book)
Paul Herrick is a decent teacher. His materials are comprehensive, his book is good and he grades fairly. My class was online, and found it to be quite challenging. But I think he did as good a job as anyone could in making the material accessible, with DVD lectures, extra material and personal involvement in the discussion boards. Thanks Paul!
honestly one of the worst teacher I have ever had. his lectures are unclear and most of the time hes talking about irrelevant things. he grades really hard and expect you to read every detail of the book...you pretty much have to teach yourself because he isn't much help
Great teacher and communicator. Loved his class, and am looking forward to taking him again! Highly recommend, but make sure to do the work, read the book, and come to class to get the high marks.
Wide of variety of materials to assist with work. If you show up to class, you will understand the material. He's pretty relaxed, a fair grader, and extremely patient. Minimal homework. He has a sense of humor, and is quick on updating grades, let us retake tests also. I struggled in the beginning but once I started reading the book it got easier.
Many resources to learn the material so it is not needed to show up everyday. Quizzes every monday, discussion board participation due every friday, pretty easy class as long as you read the book. However he is very inconsistent, and cares more about students getting high grades so he can keep his job. He loves to argue when you challenge him.
He is the best professor ever!!!
I took this class back in 2002, and I loved it. So much so that I am even going back to buy his book, The Many Worlds of Logic. Out of all the classes I have ever taken this was my favorite. Great class, excellent teacher
honestly one of the worst teacher I have ever had.He does not know what he istalking about, when a question is asked he disregards it and never has an answer.
One of the worst teachers at shoreline. If you email him a question, he will respond with a condescending insulting remark. He's not nice to his students and argues with them if they disagree. Waay too much reading to do for his class.
Inconsistent!!! One week he tells you one thing, next week he tells you another! Some weeks his class has a light workload, other times it's heavy. His class is generally easy, but he always messes up one way or another with something. He thinks only his philosophical thoughts are the right ones cause they're "commonsense." I'd AVOID him.
Paul is amazing! He is relaxed in his teaching style, respnds to e-mails quickly, cares about students. Quiz every Monday over the chapter you read, allowes one page of hand written notes. Discussion board weekly. Final is over last couple chapters, not over everything in quarter. As long as you keep up you should be able to get an A.
amazing teacher I wasn't interested in philosophy until this class would recommend him any day. really laid back, funny, and respectful if you are. Don't hesitatte on this teacher you will never regret taking this class. :)
Paul is great! I took his online class and didn't really correspond with him until near the end of the quarter, but he's fun to talk to and very knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend him.
He is well educated in Phil and he wrote the text book. I personally did not care for the man. Constantly made the comment "It's in the book and in the videos". Thats all great and dandy but I wasn't in his online class. He didn't use class time effectively. He is easily upset and is a push over. If you ask really nice he will probably help you.
I took 3 courses from Dr. Herrick's eAcademy. Totally loved it! I was in highschool then, so it was pretty challenging. Beyond getting me excited about the subject matter (Political Phil. of the Founding Fathers, the writings of C.S. Lewis and Formal Logic, Dr. Herrick's excellence in teaching made me confident in my ability to go to college.
My first impression of him was that he's rude/boring & wanted to drop the class but I decided to just stay & ended up really like him. He was amazingly nice & super understanding, he definitely cares about his students succeeding in the class. He knows what he's talking about, very intelligent & isn't too hard on you. EASY 4.0 CLASS!!!
Professor cares deeply about his students learning the subject. He provides multiple methods (book, website, video) for understanding and practicing the material. Very responsive to posted questions, even over the weekend. The most engaged professor I have had in 4 quarters. If you read, watch the short videos, and practice, you will do very well.
Fantastic prof who cares very deeply about the subject and wants his students to understand and do well. He provides so many free resources beyond the textbook in order to make the material clear, it is impossible to do badly unless you choose not to take advantage of the study materials and don't bother to read the book. Highly recommend!
Excellent professor. The material is hard and sometimes a bit dry but Paul is able to make it easy to understand, especially since he one of the authors of the book. He provides MANY MANY resources to students as well.
First, I really thought I'd hate this class but it's really interesting! Paul is very clear in what he wants, and responds quickly to any questions. As long as you read the book thoroughly for quizzes and participate in every discussion board.. you'll be fine! It's a lot of reading/work and the material is difficult, but very good-different! TAKE!
A+! Paul is amazing. I had no idea what I was getting into, since I had never taken a philosophy class, but I'm glad I did with Paul as a teacher. He's genuine, incredibly intelligent, soft-spoken, and kind. I couldn't have wanted a better teacher.
Professor Herrick is amazing! He truly is passionate about what he teaches and he really deeply cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He's very sweet and provides lots of resources to help you understand the material better. Just keep up with the reading and videos (online class). By far my fav professor at shoreline!!!
Paul is awesome. At first it was difficult for me, i wasn't reading the book. Our class was quite small (6 students). Paul was a great teacher and wanted each student to learn the materials presented. He has a ton of help when you need it too. Recommend by me to take this class! I want to take it again!
Paul is an amazing teacher. I took his online class and I'm glad I did. He answers questions on the EC board, and doesn't make the tests too difficult. The course required a lot of time spent studying/reading. I had no interest in this class before but now I plan on taking another one of his classes. Absolutely recommend!
He's an easy introduction to philosophy, but otherwise don't take his class. I took the same class at another college, so I took this with some background. He explains questions with "It's in the book" (that he wrote) and "you obviously don't get it." Pretty bad teaching. Otherwise, it's easy to study - although the tests have trick questions.
Awesome class! Learned a lot about philosophy and really changed how I see life! Participation is mandatory for success and you will have to read, but the material was interesting so it shouldn't be hard. Professor Herrick was clear with his expectations and was nice and helped out students when they needed it.
Paul is amazing! He gives you as much help as you need and if you read and study you will actually get the stuff. His book is well written and he has videos to help too. I am like the worst at math but totally got this stuff. Highly reccomend!
Herrick was usually pretty nice. He was usually helpful enough when someone asks a question. The class was very easy, but reading the full short book is necessary for a 4.0. Lecture was helpful, but could get a little disorganized, off topic, or dry. Herrick seems to always have to let you know his political opinions. Overall positive impression.
Bad handwriting,it's small and messy, hard to read and take note. Expect student to go to class with preview of the chapter. Get ready to read a lot including the lectures he assign, long, dry paper. Quizzes are online with time limit, mostly based on how someone's opinion on an argument. Invite guest speaker to talk sometimes (will include in quiz).
It's a very interesting class but don't take it if you need a math credit or have other difficult classes.
Very easy class. Just read what is assigned, participate passionately on the discussion board weekly, be a little careful on the quizzes and exams, and you should easily get 4.0.
It was an online class, but any issues there are made up for by the book, which he wrote. He also has so many resources hes made throughout years of teaching, including videos, PowerPoints and written lectures. He gives a 12 hour grace period for late work and a lot of extra credit. I'm getting a 4.0 in this class, an extremely hard class.
Paul's class was a lot slower than I would have liked. He is incredibly helpful and loves teaching and students. Wants to give 4.0's.
I think Paul was one of the best professors in SCC. He listens to each students carefully, tries to answer students' questions as clearly as possible, takes criticisms light-heartedly (no hard feelings at all), and grades easily. At first I was doubtful to take the class but after several days on his lecture I knew I had made the right choice.
Nice guy. I highly recommend Paul for Symbolic Logic (Intro to Logic). His videos and supplementals are very helpful. You just have to read and actually try. Assuming you do, the class is very nice, and you will learn a lot. I don't say this a lot, but I truly enjoyed this class.
His materials are relatively easy, but he makes it way harder on the test. He likes being sarcastic and also small mistakes on the exam will cost you to lose lots of points. DOesnt give extra credits because he said in the past students tend to complain about the points he gave.
The textbook he wrote is repetitive, dry, poorly laid out, and boring. He explains complicated things and doesn't give plain-language examples until after you're confused. He also provides way too much supplementary materials (also written by him and therefore, useless). He offers no outside sources, for students who find his writing distracting.
Paul is my favorite professor I've ever had. His lectures are in my opinion hilarious while still very informative. He tries his best to make his classes as clear and easy as possible - he wants everyone to get an A! Doesn't care if students skip in his hybrid classes. Highly recommended.
He's kind of a nice guy. He's been teaching for a long time. I missed a quiz because my mom passed away. He told me that there was nothing I could do to make up for it. I get it. He has a job to do. My grade went downhill from there. No extra credit and he's tough on grading despite my situation. Get ready to read 30-page chapters.
The best professor I've ever had, if there's any hardships just talk to him, he'll work with you.
I loved his in-person Symbolic Logic class, he's a lovely guy and made the subject fun and easy. However outside of class he can't be bothered if you're confused about the (heavy) reading, which makes his online courses unbearable ("it's in the textbook" even if it isn't.) Final tested on questions that were "optional" - no help from him.
I loved this class, he was a very good professor and he definitely knows his Philosophy. He's very kind and showed appreciation for his students. His online lectures were long but were very interesting. The only homework was to read a lecture and take a quiz, but you had the entire week to do so and the only homework was on Tuesdays. Great class!
Nice teacher who has a very interesting point of view. Reasonable grader, discussion and quiz weekly. As long as you read through the lecture, its an easy A. However, online lectures are a bit long. He genuinely wants students to success, I enjoyed his class a lot.
The online class was horrible. No variation in learning techniques. Used readings that were written by him. Very boring.
Extremely biased. Sets up easily defeatable arguments for ideologies he doesn't like (such as secularism) and then destroys them while not actually probing deep into anything. Class designed to indoctrinate students into the professors' religious, Liberal worldview.
Very caring and lectures are really interesting. The workload isn't too much, highly would recommend.
Great teacher! Timely feedback! Easy workload! Strongly recommend!
Herrick is a nice teacher. But the quizzes were really hard to understand. And the readings were from his textbook and very long. However, you will learn a lot in this class. If you're good at comprehension this class is good for you.
Should be called Philosophy of Theology since thats the only topic youll cover. Has a very obvious preference for intelligent design, sets up what probably seem like strong arguments to students who are new to philosophy, without offering any of the strong counter arguments. Do not take unless you want proselytizing, predatory religious talk.
His readings are all from a text book he wrote, he offers not other learning materials or sources. His textbook is extremely bias and he refuses to teach anything other than his personal Christian beliefs. His quizzes are worded horribly and ask questions about how his text views things not about actual content or philosophical ideas. Worst teacher
Very clear, consistent communicator. The text was great, and he wrote it so I consider those his lectures. He provided a great deal, was easy to work with and I will seek out his classes in the future.
Professor Herrick has strong beliefs which are evident in his textbook, yet the readings are still interesting and well written. We had a couple arguments but once you communicate properly with him his true character comes out and he shows how caring, and understanding he is and that he will do what he can to help you succeed. Would take again.
Great class if you want an easy A. Not a great class if you're actually interested in learning how to think philosophically for yourself. Seems to think that tacking "But make up your own mind" onto the end of things absolves him of his indoctrinating behavior. Worst professor I've had to date.
Hes such a great teacher! He gives a lot of homework and makes you read a lot however its all very scheduled and predictable. I got a lot from his classes. For sure recommend.
The class is taught from his own writing, which at least means you don't have to get a textbook. I've found he's open to classwork submissions that criticize the points he tries to make, as long as you engage on a philosophical basis. You learn enough, but he spends so much time talking up eurocentrism and complaining about college campus culture.
I highly recommend Professor Herrick's class. He gives a well-rounded analysis of all the competing perspectives in his lectures, and will certainly not grade you down for disagreeing. He is open-minded and very fair. He also puts in a lot of effort to remain available and accessible for student questions throughout the entire week. Great teacher!
This class was consistent every week, with weekly readings and quizzes. The readings were clear and I learned a lot from them. Carved out the same amount of time each week, and never was stressed. Enjoyed this low-stress class to pair with harder classes.
Professor Herrick is one of my favourite professor's I've had thus far. This class was easy and I managed to score without even buying the textbook XD (I do recommend you get it if you REALLY want to secure a 4.0). He grades VERY leniently. I wrote 6 points for a 5-mark question and I got 6/5 XD. He is super wholesome. Everyone should be like Paul.
Very easy going, willing to stop and help any students that are confused about any topic within the class
Very easy class! You'll read articles on important subjects and do a discussion for it as well with a quiz every Tuesday, don't skim because you could miss the answer for the quiz. I recommend taking this class if you want an easy A, just do the reading and homework.
I tried writing about the concepts to my own understanding, which is what he asked us to do, but everything seemed bias and had to specific to what he wanted. I didn't understand many concepts and no one was helping me understand them.
The only material Prof Herrick allows you to cite is the book he wrote which he uses to push a theistic viewpoint by straw-manning opposing arguments. He didnt give me a lower grade for not sharing his religious beliefs but he did accuse me of not understanding the material simply because I didnt arrive at the same conclusions as him. Exasperating.
Read the textbook = easy A. Main thing people have is how "outdated" or "indoctrinating" he is, due to his conservative Christian views. I agree with the outdated part (constant examples insensitively using race/gender), but unless you're really sensitive or can't think for yourself you shouldn't have a problem. He really does try to be a nice guy.
I don't recommend Paul nor his classes. I could tell Paul had a conservative political standing during the first week of this quarter. Almost weekly, he posts long-winded paragraphs on his thoughts on our country's lack of morals. Paul tarnishes Shoreline's reputation and it's difficult to take anything he says seriously.
I've taken 4 Paul classes & loved them. Each time a new concept is introduced in Paul's class, he briefly reviews what he taught previously, all the way back to basics, which helps the info stick and support complex ideas. He grades generously, giving full points to all submissions that show understanding of material & responds promptly to emails.
Paul is genuinely a great dude. He makes it clear that he is conservative and a Christian but also makes it clear that he doesn't judge anyone else for their own beliefs, even if they differ from his. I'm not conservative but anyone who hates on his class just inherently has issues with hearing people express opinions that differ from their own.
Being mean to some students.
I had to purchase a book he published, which showed a clear Christian agenda. His presence wasn't felt much during. Once a week, we had a paper and/or discussion board and then a quiz based on the chapter we read. Overall, it's an easy class; it's just demotivating when it's clear there's a certain agenda that you don't agree with.
At the beginning of the quarter, Professor Herrick makes it clear that he is a conservative Christian and welcomes disagreements. The class is easy but engaging and enjoyable, with weekly readings, discussion boards, and a few papers and quizzes. Grades are based on whether or not students understand the material. Great class - would take again.
I took a philosophy class online and there were no online video lectures at all. All reading assignments except 4-5 were right wing biased with no opposing view. Fair grader, only grades based on proof that you studied and not on your opinion. But a very biased class and makes you read content he wrote.
Amazing professor. Can't even put into words how much I enjoyed this class and this professor.
Easy A+ and there's only one home work with a quiz weekly.
Paul is a phenomenal teacher. His book is clear, thoughtful, and incredibly engaging. With about 2-3 assignments per week, the class is simple and well-organized. He grades fairly with fast, helpful feedback. He responds quickly to emails and is welcoming in person. I gained plenty of valuable knowledge, and highly recommend this course. 10/10.
Super cool professor, very fair and understanding. Interesting lectures too.
Do not take this class or professor unless you want to constantly talk about politics. He usually gives two papers for each side of an argument, however whenever it his own paper he wrote he claims there's no other side. They def need to get rid of him
