he asks stupid questions on his exams that are useless
Very boring, useless lectures. Not hard to get a decent mark. Just study t
Interesting course, Boring teacher!
even his ta teaches better than him
No Comments
if you are really interested in Abnormal Psych, don't take his class. he just makes the subject boring and you don't have to go to classes for a decent mark.
This guy should not be teaching psychology. He's lazy and he has no time for it. Brags about his clinical research and his 4 kids. Absolutely the worst prof i have ever had. You must present project infront of classmates... totally pointless.
He tries to make the lectures fun and his tests are not very hard.
No umph, teaches straight from the textbook, a complete bore.
He does not know what he's teaching, and that is why his exams are easy and straight from the textbook. That does not help the students, though. If the class average ends up too high, he will just have to scale everybody down. Avoid him at all cost!!!
Terrible Teacher. Very Very lazy and tests have no validity what so ever. To boot, his T.A. is lazier than him. Has no time for students and believes in giving zero's if he feels like it. If he keeps the t.a. Paul Hommerson, don't take!
a really interesting prof, who gives really easy midterms, but the TA's a pain in the ass. -___-"
Avoid this class because of T.A.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had in my 4 years at UBC! he even told us that he is only at UBC to do research and that teaching is an obligation he has to fulfill. Believe me, it shows. Tests are easy though, no need to go to lectures to get an A.
Study all you want. You will not get a good grade. This guy hasn't even read the new text, yet he makes the tests. His T.A. is anal and is more concerned with his lunch than marking. All I can say, is both need to be fired! fired! fired!
The only reason why I didn't drop is because it was too late. Feel free to study for hours, it really doesn't matter. Tests are very picky and ask marked VERY hard. Many A students I know can't get over 70. Good Luck.
Lectures are very disorganized, and he includes obscure, mostly useless theory not in text to force you to go to class. Exams are not hard, but ask questions on topics not even covered, are very badly written.
This is not coming from just one person who is upset and therefore taking it out online, hoestly get out of this course! it is destroying my average and I spend hours studying for tests I will not do well in, it is a waste of your time!
Excellent teacher. Very Interesting. Excellent TA.
not helpful. terrible teacher!
I have taken many psych classes and this was the worst in terms of testing and evaluation.
Test were very easy, which meant scaling. Dr. Hewitt was not very helpful, but overall not the worst psych class in the dept.
took 3 credit course with him last summer and LOVED it! Lectures were interesting b/c he talked a lot from his experience which is important.Text wasn`t bad, once I read it and went over his lect notes it was easy.I`m surprised at his ratings!!
i absolutely love this course. he knows his stuff, but he also knows how to teach it well. he uses lots of personal experiences with his patients as examples and it makes it really easy to understand. the text is also really easy to read.
He knows his stuff, and can use pratical application to the real world where it matters. Only downside is his lectures are all verbals, he writes down no notes, so be prepared to make your own
I like how he talked about actual clinical cases of disorders he was lecturing about. Yes, you have to read the textbook because he does not cover those material well, but aren't you suppose to read it anyway? MC's were on the hard side.
His lectures were disorganized, and often biased. Because of that, his teachings often contradicted those of the text. MC was okay on exams, but written questions were ambiguous. Worse, the TA made answer keys that didn't correspond with class material
taking his course right now. tests are very demanding, but he knows how to teach! his lectures are fascinating because he gives real life examples. talks a lot, so you better take good notes. overall, loved the course and would take him again.
I'm presently taking his class right now. I don't get why people are so negative about the prof. His tests are okay, just as long as you READ THE TEXTBOOK. Try taking down notes as you read coz he does get a little bit specific.
I really like this prof! Very surprised at some reviews. His lectures were interesting and I thought the tests were pretty easy- as long as you read the textbook, of course ;) The fill in the blank questions can be ambiguous or obscure sometimes.
the exams were pretty fair, as long as you read the text and read his lectures. he always has something on the exam straight from his lectures. and he also always let us out atleast 15 minutes early!

dont waste your time or money with this prof. his lectures are insanely disorganized and encourages you to approach the TA instead of him; his course outline doesnt even list his office hours! it took him about 3 weeks to reply to one of my emails. not happy with this prof at all.
Amazing lectures, very interesting, EXCEPT that's about the only thing Dr. Hewitt does in this class. He encourages you to go speak to the TA, TA grades everything, even makes up the tests himself, even teaches a few of the lectures. Dr. Hewitt didnt even show up to the class presentations.
weeder class. terrible prof. lame.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME IN THIS CLASS.dr hewitt is an extremely disorganized lecturer,as well as extremely unhelpful and unapproachable.it seems as if being in the classroom is a huge burden for him; he has absolutely no passion or talent for teaching.STAY AWAY FROM CLASSES WITH DR HEWITT!!!!
Hard to communicate with, not to mention his tests ARE REALLY DEMANDING!
weird how people in first year hate him, in higher levels like him. i admit he doesn't teach much of the material so you have to study the text a lot on your own, and he doesn't use powerpoint so it might be hard to take your own notes, but i really like him. his lectures are funny.
He shouldn't be teaching at all. He hasn't even read the newest edition of the text, and what he says in class often contradicts with the textbook. He often goes on completely irrelevant tangents. He's so lazy that the TA makes up the exam questions for him.
Prof is a professional. Thus, his training is not in teaching. Tests are ambigous and thought the material is easy. His style and exams make it difficult to maintain intrest and get a high mark. He is a tad arrogant and seems disintrested in his students.

Wish I had looked at this website before taking his class! Very good lecturer - funny and asked all questions - made interacting with the class a priority. However contacting him through email is a nightmare, and his emails are very unclear. Scaled a 6 credit class down 5%! Both him and his TA were easily frustrated with students. Worst class!
dr. hewitt is awesome, very clear expectations. he expects a lot, but gives you the tools to succeed. if you are a success-oriented person you'll do fine
great lecturer, but bad at responding to emails, and exams are impossible. 120 multiple choice and 10 short answers for 10% in 6 credit course. i cried after my first exam.
awful class, awful prof... HAVING a mood disorder in the class is incredibly difficult, because prof attempts to make people with psychopathology seem silly, the class often laughs at people disorders, very offensive descriptions of people with depression/paranoia- really, I want to cry or fight something in this class
He's a good lecturer, funny, gives great examples, but the tests!!! I also cried afterwards. Basically memorize the whole textbook, his lectures aren't really tested on. Go to the lectures though, they help give real examples and clarity to what the textbook is saying.
the lectures are painfully boring.ocasionally there is something to laugh about it.the way the material is presented makes the course even more challenging he doesnt put notes up in class.he only writes one word up on the board then talkes forever and the tests are hard cause it just evaluate ur memorizing skills.however the subcject itslef is nice
Good psyc prof, easy exams if you read the textbook carefully and always go to his lecture. Funny lecture, he is a humourous person.
Awful prof, boring as hell lectures, not prepared. Midterms are 90% from textbook, cares about little details as well
Great guy, easy to listen to and follow. His lectures are very interesting.Unfortunately most of the exam content is from the text...but other than that he is highly recommendable.
Not all that engaging. The test really kill you and its painfully hard to get a good mark in this course. The material he chooses to test on is poor and usually requires lots of memorization of boring detail/anatomy of the brain.
Vey nice guy, deferred my tests, without any questions, willing to help... Interesting class... Test are VERY hard, multiple choice, with always 2 good answers... Lots of Brain anatomy... A lot of studying required for what most thought would be an easy first year class... Think twice before you take the course and this professor...
this is coming from a hardworking student who attended EVERY one of his classes...stay away from him! his tests are ridiculous in that it has NOTHING from his lectures and notes...if u are unfortunate enough to be stuck in his class, then READ the book...keep up wiht the reading and DO THE WORKBOOK! it took me a whole year to figure it out & itwork
great lectures...lots of real life examples, really funny lectures. he's hilarious! however exams are Hard. all MC, all nit-picky questions all from the text. lecture notes don't help. i just went to class for the entertainment.
the worst class EVER!! it was almost impossible to memorize the whole entire text just for one class. Personally, I was not that dedicated to this course so I didn't do very well. Read the textbook 5x and u'll do well on this course... seriously! i barely passed after the final exam.. thanx to scaling!
Dr. Hewitt is a very engaging, creative and fascinating professor! All the negative postings are simply people who got lousy marks because they slacked off! I highly suggest reading the text book! I took very few notes in his lectures, which I thought was wonderful! It was nice to be able to just sit back and listen to a clinical guru!
okay, but goes very quickly
Hewitt is alright. My advice is to go to class, bring your laptop and play games all class. Get someone else to take your notes, then send em to you later. Then before the midterms and finals, study the book like a **** for the MC, even the names of people (not dates). Then for the written part, study all your lecture notes. Thats the format
People complain that he gives out hard exams, but I think exams are VERY EASY. It is just memorization. Go to lecture, since there are always fill in the blank questions regarding the lectures. Because of the psyc dept's standard scaling he scaled up the final grades, and I got over 100% on the final exam. Take his class if u REALLY LOVE psyc.
Intellegent man who is obviously uninterested in teaching first year psychology. His boredom is contagious. Exams are medium, just remember to study text's vocab.
spend a lot of time developing minor, simple points. do not cover all material necessary to prep for midterm. intelligent man, but average lecturer.
wow!.. i hoped ive read this site before taking this class. The exams are brutal. I got 70% in this class and i got it in the hardest way ever. 90% of the exam are from the textbook and he never teaches it. Also, the exam are very detailed and VERY HARD HARD. Prepare to memorize at lot of things. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
he has to go off topic n bring his own research into the class. doesnt stick to the curriculum. way off topic and it confuses the students. his tests were disgusting The textbook was the worst, it is so badly written. he tests on stupid things that he wont even talk about in lecture so how are we supposed to know wat to study for? too unpredictable
I think that Dr. Hewitt is a great teacher, and his tests are not difficult. True, a lot of memorizing detailed stuff, but that is what tests are about. It's a way to keep the ave. where it should be. If you read the book and really take time to learn the stuff in it, and take good notes in class, it's really not hard to get an A.
Took it during summer. Tests were okay. Difficulty of the tests depended on the previous test's class average. All memorization. Lectures are not very organized. Did not cover topics on the test. No point in going to class (but there are a few questions on the tests from the lectures)
Funny
Super easy exams as long as you study the textbook. Some material from lecture is tested but amounts to an almost negligible portion unless you have high expectations. Just study the textbook and you'll be fine. Gives many examples in lecture to illustrate ideas, though generally quite boring. He does have his moments of hilarity.
Easy exams. Lecture almost pointless and boring. Read text and you'll pass. Some exam Q's based on notes but not many at all.
Just study the textbook and you'll be fine. There's probably 15% or so based on lecture notes, but other than that it's just knowing your textbook well (understanding the concepts, remembering your terms). A lot of "easy A" classes can be really boring, but this one is pretty interesting *and* easy to do well in.
Paul Hewitt is the best prof ever!!!! He is always prepared, gives material in easy form, great powerpoints and explanations. Plus great sense of humour!!! But you have to study, it is a serious topic, what do people expect? A MUST TAKE CLASS, I WISH ALL PROFESSORS WERE LIKE DR. HEWITT, enough said.
He is fun but keep trying to make the test harder and harder since the average class mark is too high for the standard. (The high average is due to the smartness of the class.) But for sure I enjoy his lectures ... I guess he is a okay prof after all.
This professor showed little interest in the students and their questions and seemed indifferent to teaching the course.
He's a really intelligent guy, experienced psychologist & funny at times but the course isn't interesting. It is possible to do well though. Make sure that u read through the text to find possible 4/5 point answers (the written q's can be tricky). There were 3 exams(4chps&1 article for each - mc/short form written response)
He's clearly not interested in teaching a 100 level course, but his expectations are clear. Anyone with a strong work ethic, good note taking skills and an interest in the subject will earn a great mark.
Hewitt was a very interesting lecturer, and the exams were very easy (and noncumulative!). There were a lot of readings, but overall it was very reasonable. Only problem is that his answers to questions are not always very clear and his lecture material don't always match up with the textbook.
Wouldn't recommend this prof. Very boring lectures, rarely uses any teaching material (vista, handouts, etc). When he does use the power point, they are poorly made, and never relates to anything in the textbook. However, 100% of his test material is from the textbook, so you need to study completely by yourself.
Boring. Tested on useless information. I was really excited to learn when I came into the class and he was so bad I dropped my psyc course for the second term. Thanks for making a really interesting subject so boring!
Class avergae for the midterm that I just did was only 52%....
Really dry prof who doesn't really seem to show too much interest in teaching lower level course. Repeats a lot of information, rambles a lot and talks extensively about irrelevant topics. Furthermore although he said the exams were based on his lectures, 90% of answers came from textbook. Prepare to read your butt off for this course.
Not super exciting, his voice is a bit monotone. But he lectures very clearly and I found the course very easy. Lots of the exam material is from the text, so must read. Exams are non-cumulative and definitely not difficult if you've done the reading and taken notes.
Completely dry prof who teaches like he has better things to do. 100-200 pages to read for every exam, yet he goes out of his way to test you on small theories instead of the larger ideas. His lecture slides are boring, yet he purposely puts something in there to test on the exam despite 99% of the exam being from the textbook. Not recommended!
Speaks monotone and does not show much passion in his lectures. Wouldnt recommend this prof! Textbooks are highly used.. At least 200 pages of reading is required for each midterm.
If you want to pay someone to coddle and spoon-feed you, try another class. If you're willing to put in a bit of effort, disregard the negative comments. He is a funny, engaging, and excellent lecturer, but yes, you will actually need to read the book and study. You're in University, after all. Tests are MC and SA: MC from text, SA from lectures.
Dr. Hewitt's lectures were interesting, but very little of the material he talked about in class was tested; the material on his exams came almost exclusively from the textbook.
Great guy, can be hard to focus on at times and often drones on about stories. Lectures were definitely not my favourite, but not overly boring either. I found them helpful when studying. Keep an eye on what he emphasizes in class and in the videos you watch, he tests on them. READ READ READ AND STUDY STUDY STUDY! and you will be fine.
lectures are very boring but gotta attend his classes cuz those that he empahsizes during lecture (and those that r not in txtbook) are gonna b on the test. and READ READ READ. READ every single word in every single page...
Classes are really important to attend, all his short answer questions are based on verbal or powerpoint info IN CLASS NOT nessesarily in the textbook. The textbook is also really important, ALL multiple choice is on txt info, time isn't usually a test issue, just recalling all the facts and he sometimes mentions specific studies on the test too.
I really disliked him. first class he said he doesnt like teaching just does it to get $$ for his research. the tests were unfair and asked random side note questions, he goes off on pointless stories too. the only thing i liked was the 6 tests thru out the year, NON cumulative!
6 tests, all non-cumulative. Read the textbook. Go to his lectures because he doesn't post his notes elsewhere. His short answers are all based on his lecture notes and if you don't study that, you miss quite a bit of marks. The study guide helped me the most in studying. Know the terms of EVERYTHING!
Lectures could sometimes be a little mundane but I found him very knowledgeable and really enjoyed the class. Was helpful with any questions, and the fact that the testd were non cumulative was AWESOME. Go to lectures and dont just re-write the slides, take your own notes as well!
Loved that exams were non-cumulative, although the course isn't as easy as it sounds. You literally need to study every word, blurb, & sidenote in the text, he'll test you on random facts rather than main ideas. If you don't take notes at every lecture, you will lose substantial marks on the exams. Otherwise funny and interesting prof at times.
This is a clear, straightforward course. If you read the textbook and go to class (you will be tested on in-class notes) then you will do well. I didn't think this was difficult at all. Hewitt is a very clear lecturer as well, he breaks things down so they make sense and sticks to a schedule well. I'd recommend this course.
Clear. Take notes in lecture, read the textbook, take the test. 6 tests, you can drop one. Very fair tests, simply memorize, very little application. Dry humour, but still funny.
I'm sad to see Dr. Hewitt has such low ratings! He's such a nice guy and prof. His lectures can be dry but he does try to make them interesting by adding cool facts or telling funny stories. His tests are doable, especially if you read the textbook. Gives ample time to copy lecture slides. Plus only 6 tests and you can drop one! Great intro course!
I registered this class without doing research on the professor, and I regret not doing so. Tests are very challenging, focuses on miniature details. You have to go to class to take notes because he does not post the slides online. Markings for midterms took a really long time. But definitely interesting material
Writes the most random tests that includes the most trivial questions. Tends to go on irrelevant tangents in lecture and tries too hard to be funny sometimes. Must study the textbook thoroughly to do well on exams and he does include a few questions that are lecture-specific.
So boring! Almost all his exam questions were random, and sometimes you never even learned about what he asked. Made everyone fall asleep in lectures, and expected you to know things he never talked about and the textbook never taught. Don't take his class!
Overall a great class. He makes his lectures interesting and incorporates humour and some of his own experiences in the field. One of my better classes this semester. His exams are very fair - combination of multiple choice questions (from textbook) and short answer questions (usually from lectures). Easy class, if you read the textbook!
Can't write a test to save his life. He has very vague short answer questions, but is VERY strict about what he considers "correct". I would NEVER take a class with him again. My exam marks did NOT reflect my knowledge.
He is such a nice guy, and very funny. This makes him hot in my view. I loved this class, don't want it to end!
His lectures are engaging and he is clearly passionate about the material however the tests are very difficult and you need to know both his lectures and the textbook in great detail to do well.
EVERYTHING COMES FROM THE TEXTBOOK, MAYBE ONE OR TWO QUESTIONS COMES FROM THE LECTURE. STUDY THE BOOK CAREFULLY, DONT MISS A PAGE. THE MIDTERMS WERE HARDER THAN THE FINAL. HOWEVER, THE FINAL WAS NOT TOO HARD, ACTUALLY IT WAS EASY BUT ALMOST ABOUT 160 MQ. HIS LECTURE IS GOOD, I RECOMMEND HIM.
It's supposed to be for "clinical psychology" or maybe I understand it wrong cuz 80% of the time we are on psychoanalytic stuff. If you are not a big fan about psychoanalysis, avoid this course!!! the short answers are so long & ur expected to memorize A LOT without any understanding. Neither the lecture or the textbook are very logical.
Dr. Hewitt is an AMAZING prof. He is hilarious and has the best stories. He posts slides online, but don't miss a class. Most detail is given in lecture. READ YOUR TEXTBOOK. Exams aren't cumulative (yay!) - MC are all from the textbook, short & long answers are from slides. His tests are hard, but totally passable if you make an effort to study.
Test was mostly from textbook but some aspects of it are from lectures, slides are TERRIBLE and don't really explain anything which is why it's important to go to class where he explains hem
He wasn't present for a good handful of classes, and while he had TAs cover for him, it took away from the quality of the course. While I enjoyed his clinical stories, he was a very ineffective lecturer. He regularly went off on long tangents, and as a result, he never covered all of his lecture material (which was still examinable).
Lectures can be boring as Dr. Hewitt gets off topic and sometimes the lectures don't really mesh with the textbook well. Tests are difficult but fair, if you read the textbook and listen during lectures you'll be fine.
Dr. Hewitt was not here 1/4 of the semester and his grad students ddi the lectures for him. Have to read textbook to get the MC questions and have to MEMORIZE (not understand, memorize) lecture slides for short answer.
Interesting/humorous lecturer. Tested on text+lecture (incl. info not in text). 10 marks on test was based on him verbally explaining why psychoanalysis is relevant (pay attention!). First two tests felt really hard (tiny details in textbook or hard to understand questions). Grades scaled up. I had low 80s for first 2 tests but ended with A+.
To give credit where it is due: He is a good orator. You come to class and you learn and he knows A LOT. His tests are hard but fair. On the negative side, I'd say he gives no feedback, does not appear to care about the class or the students and in sum just comes because he probably has no choice. It is quiet too bad.
It does seem like he doesn't like teaching very much but with that being said... the tests are very fair. The questions come out of the textbook so it is essential to read all the assigned readings. Not too hard to get a decent mark in this class.
I don't think Hewitt is a bad professor, but teaching doesn't seem to be his passion. That being said, lectures were super interesting and I loved this class. Write down everything he says and read the text book thoroughly. It was 3 exams w/ MC from class and written from lecture. Wouldn't recommend taking in the summer, but still a great class.
Hewitt's lectures are very narrative, telling interesting personal stories of the material. Listening is a key skill to have because the smallest fact might be on the exam. 3 Midterms and some questions can be a bit unfair.
Took his course in the summer, and he condensed the content so it was manageable. He has a very narrative lecturing style which can make things really interesting and enjoyable to listen to, but sometimes his stories go on a bit too long. 2 exams each worth 50%, which are pretty fair but sometimes include random details from lecture.
very unclear grading criteria. This class felt very disorganized, the class content and textbook really did not go well together either. It's unclear what you're expected to learn and this textbook has a ton of jargon. People would always ask him questions about the exam format and he would always say that he's not sure, makes it hard to study for.
Dr. Hewitt is a good orator. You will enjoy his classes if you like to hear about therapies and how they work. However, I agree with people here that his lectures and textbook do not go well together. Assigned readings dont go with the lecture material of that week, so you gotta be careful on what you read before class. 3 tests.30%30%40%
Hewitt's lectures are legendarily entertaining and everyone loves coming to class to hear him speak. That being said, virtually none of the lecture helped me on the exam and the text was so dry I really struggled to get through it. I love hearing him talk, but I bombed the class because I didn't really learn anything.
I just wonder why the avg is below 65. I thought we have some kind of department policy. :) Anyway. Nice lecture. Very interesting. Hardest course I have ever had so far. Panicked every time I was studying for exams. Totally no idea whether the textbook I read would help me in exams. Lost some weight b/c of this.
He was my friend's favorite prof, not anymore. But I find this course worth taking. I wasn't so sure if I really like psychology, now I think I'd like to take a career with psychology.
Teaching is not his passion, slides and notes are not helpful, doesnt respond to emails, no quizzes or practice questions for exams which means you're going in with no idea how to succeed or with any idea of how he will test; does this likely to keep his average at or below the department standards. Would take another prof if possible.
will have to discern what's important bc he tends to overexplain things that aren't important (spent almost 2 whole classes on a moon slide. A PHOTO OF THE MOON while he talked over it). i.e., his slides don't have much info. i've been relying on text + readings. no study guide/clear learning obj for exams. basically, you're teaching yourself.
Im taking a course with him because I decided to ignore all the bad reviews and give him a chance. My advice is DONT. He does not care about students, he is civil, but looks like hes wants to get rid of you when talking to you. Him and his TAs is super unclear about testing, assessment, and grading. And the lectures seem to drag on forever.
this instructor is very disorganized. His notes and readings are probably recycled every year. even the tape he used in class is from 20+years ago. to succeed in the course, you need to memorize all the information in his readings. I do not feel I learnt something after every lecture...I learn mostly from the reading, more like a self-study course.
He set up one rule at the start of the term: any lecture slide material he doesn't mention won't be testable. Broke that rule every time. Even worse, he wrote test questions on material he didn't teach until AFTER the test. Borderline tech illiterate. Doesn't read emails, doesn't respond on canvas, and frequently forgets to record lectures.
His lectures are ok, shows a lot of videos in class though - however, you have to memorize the slides and do the readings in order to do well in his tests. Worst part was him and his TAs (SG & AK) did not respond to emails the entire semester and did not help at all. No info provided on any of the tests from the beginning, it's been so unclear.
Grades depend on 2 midterms and a final worth 33% each. No study guide or goals for each test. Lots of readings and were really dry. Lecture notes were recycled from 2019. No response during Omicron outbreak until 1 hour before exam stating we can have SD.
Three tests, worth 33% of our grade each. No indication about what we can expect from them. Literally tested us on content that was on lectures/readings that was scheduled for weeks AFTER the tests. Had the gall to keep the final exam in person despite the Omicron outbreaks and not show up himself. Thanks for endangering us at no cost to yourself.
He was by far the worst prof I have ever had. Did not care about COVID, did not respond to emails, did not even give us a clear outline of what was expected on tests. The TAs were the same too. while it was a 3 hour long class every week, many lectures were not recorded which made it really difficult. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!!!!!
Do not take a course with this professor! He is a nice person, however, is extremely disorganized and unprofessional. The syllabus was given 2 - 3 weeks after the semester began. Exams were subjective. The lectures were inaccurate and he proposed claims without any empirical evidence. Lastly, he failed to discuss so many psychiatric disorders.
Fun stories but disappointing. Highly disorganized class structure, scant class schedule, and poor slides. Exams were 60-75% outdated textbook material and 25-40% lecture material (with no citations or heavily outdated empirical evidence). Has tendency to interrupt or get defensive with students when they ask questions or express curiosity.
This isn't a course that will boost most people's GPA (mine included), but in my opinion, it was worth it. I learned so much about what I do and don't want in a graduate program and my career will likely be quite different (and more fulfilling) because of this class. The exams are tough-- read everything provided on Canvas (it's a lot!).
course is comprised of three exams. Every single one of them had content that we never covered or he said he wouldn't test on. Lectures were extremely hard to follow because he wouldn't stick to the set of slides posted on canvas. Not sure how they're allowed to operate this course but its almost like a scam to be honest.
Easy course but tests were on material not covered or covered after the exams. First lecture he sated "It's not my job to teach. It's my job to research and contribute to scientific knowledge". And he was true to that statement. Slides had dates on them from years ago. Readings are old and not good.
The class itself is a really interesting course, so if you're interested in the topic, you'll do fine. Grades were determined by 3 tests (test subject is 25% from lectures and 75% from textbook). He tends to ramble on during lectures but they are interesting tangents. Interesting but content heavy course.
Every rating equal to 2 or below is telling the truth, otherwise any above 2 is capping. My guy skips more lectures than the students. Luckily this years TA was splendid and was helpful, but like come on, my guy skips everyones group project and monitoring the final and leaves the TA alone to proctor the exam.
Hewitt's a great speaker, but with caveats. His knowledge/experience he gives during lecture is real world & helps put the slides and course content in context. The downside (he is upfront about) is that lecture will not cover all material & textbook reading is necessary to succeed. Grade structure is as good as it gets, only top 3 scores get used.
I think the prof was funny and engaging. His over-explained examples were memorable for exams. If you attend his classes and are willing to learn the interesting material from the textbook you should be fine. exams are both lecture and textbook - the last two are more textbook information based. TA gives great study tips! do the group project ;)
I would never take his course again. Good presenter and he made the class engaging, but having 33.333% exams * 3 to determine the entire grade is ridiculous:') Literally grind through all chapters he didn't cover in class before each exam. Still received bad grades. Avoid him at any cause.
VERY biased towards psychoanalysis, constantly disses CBT. Assigns thought-pieces praising Freud with an avg citation from 1970. Slides are so outdated they describe the DSM IV which came out in 1994 and showed data from 2012 to prove psychoanalysis is relevant. You won't learn anything about the contemporary field. Still bad prof without all that
Confused about his own content. Not following the syllabus, and repeating the same info. Then we are behind.
Material is outdated. Exams & slides are riddled with simple spelling errors. Lectures are unpredictable & unstructured... so exam prep is a crapshoot. Would recommend avoiding his classes.
Extremely biased towards psychoanalysis and barely touches on other orientations. Uses outdated sources (often from the 70s-80s) and doesn't provide any learning objectives or guidance whatsoever. Also gets weirdly confrontational when students ask questions (especially about what to expect on exams). Really regret not withdrawing from this course.
Dr. Hewitt is nice but the class itself is a 3 hour long lecture with only about 30 minutes worth of actual content and the rest just random conversation. The exams are pretty fair but they are pretty much only based off of the readings. The class just feels like it lacks structure and the same things are repeated over and over.
Paul is a great guy and he seems like he genuinely cares, however the structure of his classes are non existent, he will spend an 1 hour out of 3 on 1 slide talking about a personal story. Slides often have bare bone info with not much else and he has a heavy bias towards psychodynamic theories. Great guy, terrible terrible prof.
If you're the kind of student who likes to consult with your professor outside of class hours, I don't recommend his class. I once asked if I could walk and talk with him after class, and then out of courtesy, I let him go ahead on a narrow path. Later, I was reported to the student conduct office, with the implication that I had ulterior motives.
Lecturing for 3 hours on a fraction of the course content that appeals to you and then having students learn the rest from the textbook is not an appropriate strategy for a UBC professor. The TA was incredible and the course could not function without her. Hewitt seems like a nice guy but he obviously doesn't have the time to teach a course.
Honestly, the worst Prof in my 4 years at UBC. It is so unfair that he is the only Prof that teaches 401, a course that so many psyc students look forward to taking. Readings are outdated, lectures are dragged on with no real information being taught - I learnt absolutely nothing. Only take it if you HAVE to.
Avoid if possible.
