He was a great teacher, he made it easy to learn and always willing to help you. It was a joy to go to class, especially when you can always count on an interesting conversation. Overall I loved the class and the teacher was awesome!
All in all he's Not a good teacher. He is unclear and doesn't explain things fully. I came out with a B, but not from his help. He didn't explain the paper very well and really left it to us students to guess how to do it. He is Not a Good teacher!

This was the Honors section so you'd figure that there would be some extra work involved. The class was full of interesting topics and the conversations were so interesting it made you want to go to class even though you could skip a few classes he is lenient! If yo udont understand something he even makes tiem for office hours, any time!Great Prof
Best professor at Pierce!! He makes the class interesting and his questions at the begining are fun. Take him!!
very disorganized! he'll spark up a couple of interesting conversations, but usually goes on rants. He doesn't teacher the materiel well. There are better phil teacher them him!
He does not explain the curriculum properly so students can comprehend the subject matter. For any student with possible learning difficulty he has no compassion or understanding. I would not recommend taking this philosopy teacher.
Great teacher, actually one of MY favorite professors in school. He forces you to open your mind. willing to argue any given situation, if you have trouble understanding what his talking about, just ask. Mr. Hicks has inspired and influenced me in many ways as a thinker, grade A teacher.
I don't know why everyone dislikes him. He is a great teacher, yeah sure a bit challenging but he makes a student think, and that's what's most important. Has office hours if you need help with your paper, agrees to read it before turning it in! Offers extra credit by going to sometimes interesting lectures! I want to minor in Phil because of him!
this man thought me one thing BE INTELLECTUALLY HONEST. he has unlimited office hours that means go to him and he helps u understand what ever u dont get.
I took Honors Phil 5: Critical Thinking and Composition and I can say without a doubt-- he is the BEST professor at Pierce College. Write 5 essays. One final. That's it. Take his class, he will expand your mind. He's a great guy and you can come to him at any time for anything. Lots of extra credit! Great guy. Thank you, Professor Hicks!
He is the nicest teacher that really loves his job. Bravo.
Explains the material well. This man knows what it is to be a teacher, and he does it well. Excellent class. He's fun and nice. I only have good things to say. You barely even need the $30 book for the class. He explains it all in lectures.
Awesome teacher, those who don't understand the material are the one who don't ask. Don't buy the book just take good note he goes over everything before the final and quiz anyways. Always argue against him it's just fun. Essays are a bit hard in the summer but are doable.Beware he brags alot about his son, hope you like eighties music.
the material seems hard at first, but its alright. midterm & a final. midterm is all mc questions, final is mc questions & 2 essay questions. the essay questions are not hard as long as you do the readings, go to class, listen & take notes. study groups help alottt!!! interesting class, but it could be boring at times. fun professor.
Very intresting class. Hicks is a very good professor. It's not that hard, but you must study for it. The midterm which was basically all terms and concepts he taught us, wasn't that hard. The final was based on the articles we read. Take alot of notes and have fun. Your going to learn how to think differently after this class..
The content of the class (Phil 6)is hard so it requires a lot of studying and opening your mind to new concepts. The professor is very flexible and tries to help you as much as possible. The only down side is that he bases your final grade on the final and mid-term only. This class is very challenging.
He's really easygoing, not intimidating at all, really makes you think. I would definintley recommend him.
Do not take this guy for philosophy 6. He is a pretty nice guy, but his class is ridiculous. His midterm is so hard and has questions that he never even taught us about. Not to mention that his final is nearly impossible. Stay away from him he is not the best of professors
Do not worry about the exams, they are not as hard as they seem. If you study the fallacies, read the assigned papers, and complete your online assignments, you will receive an A in his class with no problem. He is a great professor; I definitely recommend him. Take his class?you will find it very interesting!!!
Overall he is a very fair and resonable. Very intuitive.
Good teacher. Everything is outlined online crystal clear. Has good study guides, study groups, and opportunities for extra credit. Well organized and interesting teacher.
Excellent Professor! The work was hard. Philosophy 6 was no joke and I took the PACE class, so imagine. But if you apply yourself, study the fallacies and truth tables your mid-term should be a lot easier. For the final you must read the essays. He gives extra credit and is always willing to help. Enjoyed his class. Very glad I took it.
Excellent Professor! The work was hard. Philosophy 6 was no joke and I took the PACE class, so imagine. But you have to put in the work. This is no fly by night class. Glad I took this course.
Excellent Professor! Class was hard. Lot of information to process, but loved going to class and the teaching skills he has are great. Very helpful but you must do the work. Gives some extra credit, but not much.
Took this guy for phil 5. Class was boring. Hicks tried to be cool but he isn't. Assignments are hard because the professor doesn't know what he wants from the students or know what he is doing. He also doesn't seem really solid on philosophy in general but is instead more interested in if people like him or not.
XLNT Prof! Had him for PACE Phil 6 & 20. Challenges u to THINK & what I've learned has changed my life! If u want an EDUCATION (not just an easy "A") he's THE BEST! Reviewer saying asks exam ? not covered in class must not go to lectures/study groups or study for exams! Covers EVERYTHING in class +study groups +very avail after class & by email.
Very interesting class. A ton of reading. He goes out of his way to help you prepare for tests. Guy that was crying about how he tried to make everyone like him must have got a bad grade. I got the opposite impression,he doesn't care if you like him or not. Justs expects you to do college level work.
Logic is no fun. VERY very Very! hard class. Lots of studying required, but that is normal for any college level class. If you don't need this for a GE don't take it. If you do need a GE like this, try an alternative GE. Unless you understand logic already, take something else. I thought it was boring, hard as did others. Nice instructor.
Very great professor, interesting class content, and strong desire to make sure students understand the materials. homework is clear. readings are difficult so make sure you shop up to the study sessions before the tests, they are helpful
AWESOME!!!!!! Attendance is not mandatory, but you should def show up if you want a good grade on your tests. Three exams+Paper. No book, online readings. YOU MUST READ! Difficult, worthwhile readings. I learned a buttload. This is a rigorous class, beware. But if you want to learn to THINK and write really well, then take this class.
Great professor. Class discussions were memorable and the overall learning experience was far better than i imagined. show up to the study sessions if you want an A. They really help to clear up the difficult questions.
"Meaning is use." These words have been on my mind ever since I heard them and will continue to be probably for the rest of my life! Prof Hicks is an excellent professor. 3 papers, One midterm with multiple choice and some essay, and a Final that was all essay. Don't worry, show up, read the papers, apply yourself and your good!! record notes!
Class was 10000x's better than I expected. English 101 is a prerequisite for this class and he does except you to be capable of performing at the appropriate level. I wouldn't necessarily claim an A is easy, but if you apply yourself it's obtainable.
Well organized and taught as much as was needed to comprehend the material. Not an easy subject but the professor knows how to teach it well.
He is the worst professor I have ever had at pierce. I usually love my teachers. He explains everything but he will be little you and allow anyone to insult you and he will insult you and make you feel terrible. I did not appreciate this. Don't ever take this professor but professors at pierce!
I earned an A in this class, but it was in no way easy. We were graded on two exams which, when combined, were worth 90% of the grade. All reading materials are provided online, however, the use of a book could have made this class easier.
Do the reading and get the truth tables down and you should have no problem passing the class. Hick's is a character. He teaches you how to think (by that i mean how to think for yourself). Whatever position one takes, he will always should the oppisite. It's interesting class forsure.
There are those who rise to challenges and those who fail. I will agree that his class is not easy. I also agree that you actually learn something. Keep good notes, do the readings and homework. He lists his expectations in the beginning. If you don't care, don't take his class. For those that value content, suck it up and be rewarded.
Interesting and informative! I am extremely happy to have taken this class. I learned a lot of information that I still remember and use today. I got an A, but it wasn't easy. I wont say it was hard either. Pay attention, study, and read ALL of the articles he posts online (they are interesting!) Great class and the trip to BJs was great at the end
You need to apply yourself in this class. I took it as a Pace class, so it was even more demanding. Attend class, take good notes, try to understand the concepts. Practice the truth tables. Don't slack on the reading, it's the basis for the forum posts and written portions of the exams. He does not belittle, he expects critical thinking.
Took the winter class. We did take home test essays, consisted of multiple questions you need to answer. Lectures are confusing, but it is philosophy. I got a B, didnt try on the test, an easy grader I would say. I got a B, because the in class Final screwed me up because it wasnt take home, and you need to think fast on the spot. Hes morbid. lol
Professor Hicks is an awesome teacher. The class is pretty hard, but if you listen and take notes, you should be fine. This was a PACE class and attendance to every class is necessary or you'll get lost. No textbook, just make sure to take notes and print out his lectures, two take home tests and a final with an essay question.
I found this class to be harder than expected. Most of the lectures, I didn't see how they pertained to what we could tested on. Then when we had a test there would be things in there that was briefly discussed , or not at all. This was a pace class, so we needed all the clarification we could get. Also my emails would never get responded to.
Professor Hicks is amazing. He is very passionate about Philosophy and he really knows how to grab your attention. I have taken several philosophy classes, and this class has to be my favorite out of all of them. Must attend lecture to completely understand material. Book is definitely necessary!
This man is very Intelligent and passionate about philosophy. This coming from an Engineer about to transfer out, he's easily one of the smartest professors I have ever had. Go to class and take good notes, READ, study, and you will pass .. Its a very interesting class and you will not regret it one bit. Thank you professor
Professor Hicks is my favorite Professor by far. Every class was interesting because he picks good topics to talk about. It's the only class i want to take again just to hear what he has to say. You have to participate but you can say whatever you want he wants you to challenge yourself. He's just a really intelligent Professor. love him.
He doesn't like it when students use the bathroom during class or use their phones what is this middle school? Furthermore, I understand he has to play devils advocate to get conversations flowing within the class but he didn't have to do it so rudely. I also found his class hard to follow because he would just ramble forever making notes difficult
I am NOT a philosophy MAJOR!! But let me just say, this professor really inspired me to want to explore other philosophy classes. Not only is he hilarious and engaging in lectures, he has offices hours and gives essay test every week, Not to worry though you are just answering in short paragraphs. Participation really helps!
The lectures for a summer class were not very clear I understand it is lighting speed however a quick run down not just syllabus would help. Very disappointed in this professor went into this class excited with an open mind. The Professor was not clear, nor very helpful, he is difficult to get a hold of. He does not answer his emails. Good luck.
Professor Hicks is one of the best professors I've had! I am currently in his class right now. His class is hard, to be honest, BUT he explains everything very thoroughly and takes the time to help you understand if you ask! He's very funny, very easy to talk to. I don't know what these people giving him bad reviews are talking about!!!
Funny guy. He posts the test questions on moodle in advance so as long as you do the reading in the textbook there's no reason you shouldn't pass. He gets some good conversations going and makes you think about certain things in ways you may not have considered before. He's pretty blunt and opinionated, so don't take if you're easily offended.
This guy takes his class seriously so make sure you do too, but otherwise it is not that difficult! Really! Anyway, just make sure to attend class and take good notes. If it's really that hard for you to take notes then just record the lectures, but I really don't see that happening. It's a fun class that discusses a lot of cool things.
the whole class is 4 tests. no HW. gives you a perfect study guide on moodle. I showed up half the time and still ended up with a B because I did good on the easy final
Very interesting class. There was never any homework. All his tests were mostly short response except the first. The exams were fairly easy because he would post study guides on moodle. Always had very funny, clear, and great lectures that kept students interacting with him throughout every class.
He really knows his stuff and inspires you to think about a lot more things about life. I don't know. It's just one of those classes you gotta take if you want to be and feel smart, but don't want to be overwhelmed.
This professor turned me into a philosophy major almost right away. His lectures are really interesting and he gives a midterm final. Just participate in class.
Awesome professor that takes his time to deal with students. I really enjoyed the lectures. You learn a lot of powerful stuff in this class. Hicks is kind of weird, but totally in an awesome way. This is a prof that is totally worth taking!!!
The lectures were really fun and easy to follow. Tests are straightforward and easy too. Definitely a professor worth taking again!
Unorganized. 2days he canceled the class but never let us know through the canvas or email. Very fast (winter semester) lecture n he doesn't outline his lecture with articles n books, difficult to study at home from given articles. Good side is easy grader n helpful. Be convinced to write one 2000 words argumentative paper.
I took Professor Hicks for winter session so the course was pretty condensed and hard to get through all of the content. He wants to set you up for success and gives possible test questions prior to each exam. He is very particular on word choices for short response q's and also a 2000 word paper that admittedly was difficult but also doable.
Worst Prof ever!! Spends the whole class trying convert you to his personal opinions and spends %5 of lecture time on test material.
If you want a place with "intellectual honesty" look somewhere else. This professor has a clear agenda. His lectures are rarely on things that are on the test. Also he requires a 7-page final paper.
The class was an overall easy class. He lectures on the test and always gives the questions to the test ahead of time so students can ask questions. He also has reviews before the test. Lectures were fun and the reading were easy to follow (not to mention free/no book). Would recommend to take for credit!
This was my favorite class from last semester. He is a little imtimidating at first but dont worry he is not trying to put you down. He tries to get rid of the status barrier between students and profs. He posts all of the test questions online before each test so students can study. He is really nice and really smart.
The professor gave clear lectures, easy test questions and tries to get students to participate. He is a really cool professor to take. Totally recommend.
There aren't a lot of professors out there that are as passionate about their subject as this guy. He takes careful time to explain everything so that students are prepared for the test (questions are given ahead of time and no surprises). Participation makes the class way easier and fun. Definitely best phil professor I had. Strongly recommend!
If you go to lecture, take notes, and understand what he's teaching, it'll be an easy A. Definitely makes lectures interesting. For the first two weeks he would ask a question and each person would give their answer; that's how he took roll. After that, roll wasn't taken. Recommend if you need to get your GE's out of the way
Professor Hicks is very passionate about philosophy. I found his lectures to be totally captivating. Since he was my professor for Phil 005 Critical Thinking, there was considerable reading for this class. The papers are not that hard, but to get an A grade you may need to ask for feedback before submitting final draft.
Professor Hicks is the best Phil professor out there. He is always available, answers emails in minutes and gives exam questions ahead. You dont need to take notes, just read the papers and participate in class discussions. Its the best class I took this semester. Totally recommend to anyone looking for a fun, easy and thought provoking class!
Easy class and very fun professor to talk to. Just participate in class discussions and ask questions if you are confused. Professor Hicks is the best philosophy professor I took so far so definitely recommend!
Professor Hicks is an easy guy to get along with. He takes student concerns seriously, but is serious about making sure you do the reading. Lectures are really fun and tests are short and easy. He totally got me into philosophy.
He is a good professor. His tests are in essay form and as long as you take notes you should pass with a good grade. You will get 4 tests and a practice test before each test which will be 5 or 6 questions and only two will be on the test. No extra credit opportunities
I took his philosophy 1 course last year and just finished his philosophy 2 course this semester. I loved philosophy 2. I am considering changing my major. His tests are essay format but he gives you the questions ahead of time. You have to do the reading and pay attention in class. If you do then you will be fine.
Took him for Ph1 and 5. Amazing professor! Great lectures, great conversation, will help if you're struggling. My advice: don't sit quietly, the class moves so much smoother and it's way more interesting when everyone participates. BE THERE FOR THE FIRST DAY, stuff on the syllabus is important - plus you get extra credit for reading it thoroughly.
He is a really good teacher, he influenced me to change my major and I am so excited now! His class is easy, just be prepared to write three 2500+ word papers. The exams are super easy, material is super easy.
I took his philosophy 2 class this spring and loved it! Mr Hicks is a great teacher. He gives 4 exams and gives the questions ahead of time. He makes it easy to succeed if you pay attention and ask questions. I am considerering changing my major to philosophy after this class. Take him you wont regret it.
Took his summer class and absolutely loved it! He is an awesome professor that really cares about his students. Makes class fun through discussions and always helps with writing papers. Take his class, you will love it!! Very chill professor.
Just show up to the class, take good notes and you will pass. You don't need the textbook. Posts essay questions before each exam to study. There are 3 exams and a final. Nice to talk to and very considerate. (I would recommend printing the Fallacies and Arguments packets before the lecture). I would take him again if I could.
Professor Hicks knows his stuff and inspired me to take more philosophy classes. He is easy, approachable and explains ideas really well. Wish Pierce has more professors like him.
I dont know my final grade yet but its not relevant to my experience in this course, which has been fantastic. Professor Hicks truly cares about the success of his students, but also cares about sharing his knowledge in a way that would inspire the mind to be inquisitive and contemplating. Great person
He's an awesome prof. He covers interesting topics and makes it super easy and enjoyable for his students. He also gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit. DO IT because he always makes them worth a ton! He gave us 2 papers and 2 tests and a final test and paper. Other than that no quizzes or hw just lecture.
Not an easy A but not a hard A! You need to actually try and put in some effort. Tests are pretty simple and straightforward. Follow all instructions for the papers. Most of the lectures consist of paper topics. A few extra credit opportunities that are easy and worth a lot, so do them! Hicks is awesome and I definitely recommend him!!
This professor never available took him around 2 weeks to answer a email, I accidentally send wrong homework took him a week to answer, I went to library to take test and that week they had technical problems and when i tried to redo quiz he said he would give me another attempt and he did not do it never answer my email very unavailable professor.
He is a very nice man. He is very passionate about philosophy. For his online class during COVID-19, he posted exam questions every week and usually a discussion question. They are very easy. Make sure to practice good time management for this class and submit assignments on time.
He gave us two quizzes that had 50 questions each (100 in total) and the average grade my class received for it was a +C/-B. On top of that, two submission assignments. He's probably a really good teacher for a lot of you all. But I cannot handle this much work for a class that has only begun the first week. Maybe the class is hard cause its online
For COVID online classes, he was okay. At the beginning of the semester he would post youtube video lectures to watch but stopped about halfway through the semester. At that point there was a ton of reading to do. Be prepared to write and read a lot. The reading content was also hard to understand in most cases.
Paul Hicks is okay . his discussions are confusing , first week he gave us 3 HEAVY EXAMS ! . He always takes LOOOONNGGG to grade . Its December 28 currently , and he still hasnt graded a lot of my work including my 2 essays that I had due in November 8th and my last Final Essay in December . Listen , just dont take philosophy at all .
This is a fun and easy class. He teaches you how to think logically and how to approach your other classes. Topics were fun too. We talked about the existence of God and gender and sexuality. He can talk about some taboo subjects but if you act like an adult it is beneficial. Always responded to emails quickly. Really nice guy.
Worst ever. Takes forever to grade. His discussions are so confusing and he doesn't provide any insight. Harsh grader to the max and gave me extra points because I mentioned something his daughter liked. He gives NO feedback on what you did wrong, and by the time he even grades, you've completed the class. He gives you no room for improvement.
I took class as a high school student. Class consists of watching a video, read article, then answer questions. Everything is really straightforward. He gives everybody 5% extra credit to start and you can do an extra credit paper worth 10%. Everybody I know got an A or B in class.
Proffesor Hicks is the best teacher I ever had. Always available by zoom and email. His class will make you question everything you believe. If you never taken philosophy do it! He gives lots of extra credit if you need it.
Took his online class during COVID. He was available on Canvas and zoom. He forces you to question everything you think you know. If you actually want to learn something take his class. Lots of extra credit available.
All I can say is you will learn something from him. Professor Hicks is really passionate about philosophy and just talking to him shows this. Go into this class with an open mind and prepared to have your mind blown. You will never think the same way again.
Really sweet man who is very passionate about philosophy. This has been my favorite class up until now. He is very e say going and straightforward. Each week we would watch a video read a couple articles and answer questions. Topics were if God exists, life after death, and how we think. Keep a copy of the fallacies when answering questions.
He is an awesome professor that gives you detailed feedback nad is really willing to go the extra mile to help you get the grade you want. The only way you couple possibly screw up a grade is if you don't reach out. He responds to emails almost immediately and makes time to meet with students if they would rather do that. He was very approachable.
If you value your time, do not take this professor. I don't know how he got such a high rating. There is so much writing every week. On top of that, the answers are hidden in long lectures and even longer readings. If you do not write enough, that's automatic points off. If you write too similarly to the readings, that's automatic points off.
I really liked Prof Hicks. Grades are based on mainly discussions and assignments, which are a few questions based on his lectures. His lectures are all on Youtube and they are quite long (up to an hour), but they are so interesting that I didn't mind watching them ever. He looks for substance, thoroughness, and genuine effort in the work put in.
If you have the opportunity you should definitely take his class. You will learn stuff you never considered. In his class you really have to think about the topics. Every week there are two questions you must answer. Each answer requires a couple paragraphs and are based on the lecture and reading of the week. He offers tons of extra credit.
This was an amazing class! I never knew philosophy existed. He requires a discussion question where you give your opinion and a reading question where you answer a question about that weeks philosopher. Very clear grading criteria and he offers tons of extra credit.
His lectures are interesting but the professor is not structured. He forgot to upload the lecture for the week, normally we have a week to do but only gave us a 2-day extension. Takes FOREVER to grade so have the time you don't know what grade you have in the class .l I think he passes everyone as long as you do the assignments
Hardly any useful lectures on the weekly topics. Expect to learn majority of the content by yourself, as he does not give any guides or refer to the readings within the lectures. Additionally, these readings range from 20-25 pages with some even going beyond that when the main argument is found within only a couple of pages.
This isn't a hard course but the teacher made it so. Grading is inconsistent throughout the entire semester and I still don't know what my grade will be. He takes off most of your points on work without explanation and hasn't responded to any messages across Canvas or Outlook. The semester ended last week and he just assigned an extra credit paper?
Amazing lectures, you always want the next time to come for him to give lecture again.
Do not take this professor please save your time. He assigned 2 extra credits, if u don't do them, counts against your grade. Does not grade ANYTHING on time, does not reply to emails at all. Consider yourself warned. Do not. Take this class.
