Even though he can sometimes get lost in his lectures, attending every class helps you. Gives sample questions from test. Questions from study guide are on the test.
40 question tests. 10 answers given to you. Grades on a curve! yeay!
He always curves the tests. Lectures can be difficult to follow, so just read the book.
One of the most boring teachers in history. His lectures are completely worthless, he just rambles and mumbles. Tests are easy, but that doesn't make up for how painful the classes are. Avoid!
this class was decent enough-- his lectures were pretty bland, but he knew they were so if youre in the night class he'll try to let you out as early as possible. had to read the book to understand what in the h he was talking about in class.
The lectures are boring as hell but the exams are EASY (just read the book and skip the lectures, they are PAINFULLY bland). If you can't get an A in his class you should save yourself some money and drop out of college, seriously.
his lectures are boring, but he's a cool guy and likes to joke around. take notes and READ THE BOOK. easy A
i got to give him all 5s. easy A. Same shirt, pants and jacket everyday. he looks like copernicous
The class itself was boring. The teacher was kinda sarcastic and amusing, and he always wore the same green shirt. Tests are okay, but paired with the lab it was just tooo much astronomy.
He can be pretty boring his sarcasm gets you through. I took the one day a week class and the majority of the time he let us out an hour early. Make sure you follow the study guide. Study questions he assigns are on the test. Understand the concept not just the definitions. Easy class.
So boring, he often loses track of what he's saying. Tests are no longer easy, he changed his format. RECONSIDER!
The most boring class I've ever taken. He's also not easy anymore so ignore those comments. His study guides help little and you WILL fall asleep during class. I would not reccomend him if you're just the average joe when it comes to astronomy. You'll probably get a C in the class.
one of the most boring teachers ever at CSULB, his test are extremely hard (does not curve at all), and he offers extra credit but does not fall through, do not take him!!
Do Not take his class, very boring and hard. He only has 4 test, and does not curve.....
Boring is an understatemet, however, I don't know why people are claiming he doesn't curve... His tests were worth 50 points each, and a 32/50 was a B from what I recall, so there was a curve. The extra points were hard to get if you skipped out class early. The class was painful, but I manged a B (I showed up 75% of the time).
Bring a pillow, food, and TV!!!
Prof. Hintzen was very straight forward about the class. If you pay attention during lectures, there is no way you can fail the class. He is very clear and helpful...should be a simple GE!
I thought this prof. was very straight-forward. He will answer and question. It is true if you go to the lectures, you will pass because he mostly talks about stuff on the tests. He gives lots of extra credit quizes that add up at the end. very nice easy-going guy.
He seems a little bit frazzled and crazy, but I think he really knows what he's talking about. Good Teacher. Quiz everyday
Attendance is not mandatory but be prepared for many hours of studying if you don't go. The quizzes every class are extra credit and helps you in the end.
he is brilliant. he used to work for nasa, and he tells u the information sometimes first hand, u must go to class, in class is where he gives u the notes that are on the tests. The tests are fair, he tells u what is on them, just study the bold words he tells u....good class...he makes it interesting...emails u right back when u need help
If you actually read the chapters you are supposed to, this class will be easy. otherwise, the lectures will make no sense and you will find yourself deciding not to go often..
Yea he could go on for hrs talking about stars or something, but it goes through the other ear. I always sat in the front so i could force myself to pay attention to what he had to say. Sometimes i still don't pay attention. This class is weird because I do little reading, but i did all the extra credit, study hard from lecture notes and did well.
you tend to lower your studying habits for this class as i found myself doing the whole semester even after the results of the first exam. curve is fantastic, plus you get extra points for the quizzes. 4 tests + weekly quizzes and you're all set to blast off to an A. happy trails.
Booooorrrrringggggggg!!!!!!

Very long class, drink lots of coffee. However good teacher, actually knows what he's talking about. If you genuinely like the subject you will like the class. Not terribly easy, but if you do the reading you'll get an A.
He looks like a caveman. But he's pretty tight. He'll have everyday class tests for extra points depending if you attend class or not. I found the test super hard. Best bet is to get into study groups and study the night before or the day of just to pass the Midterms. They're hard.

Just read and understand the chapters and you'll pass. Grading is very simple and lectures aren't too boring. He does cover much of what you need to do well on the tests. I got an A.
If you need to take a physical science course, take this class!!! There are 4 tests including nonaccum. final and every day you go to class you take easy quizzes for extra credit. He gives you easy study guides too. I went to class half the semester and got a B. He is actually pretty amusing, and yes, wears the same thing everyday. Good class!
Not the greatest and not the worst, kind of so-so...puts way too much emphasis on attendance.
he doesn't take attendance but he does give quizzes at the end of his lectures for the night classes. if you take a quiz and you get them all wrong he gives you a zero... doesn't affect your grade... but if you don't turn one in you get negative points that drop your grade.
Professor and class is a joke. Teaches like it is high school. Half of the class was asleep most of the time and his lectures went no where. You are better off just reading the book.
This guy is a trip. Wore the exact same thing every day of class all year. He was very lively and often funny. Basically though, you have to read the book to do well. I fell asleep often, read and understood the book, and got an A. Lectures were to reinforce the book and get e.c. quiz points. Take him if you don't mind reading the book.
Professor Hintzen was great! He was clear and very helpful in explaning the material. Class attendence is mandatory, but you get the chance to earn extra credit in his quizzese when you attend. This is one of the easist ways you can fulfill your physical science requirement. Definitely reccomended.
He was a great teacher. His class is technically not mandatory, but you want to go because he gives a quiz every day and if you don't show you get negative bonus points, which can hurt you come final grades. At times he was a bit hard to follow, but his lectures were overall very helpful. Read the book! You must to pass!
OKAY SO THIS WAS BY FAR THE WORSE CLASS IVE TAKEN IN COLLEGE, MIND YOU I AM A JUNIOR....SO ITS PRETTY MUCH BORING...I KNOW HE REALLY LIKES ASTRONOMY BUT..I NEVER READ THE BOOK AND I PASSED BUT I LEARNED NOTHING...AVOID THIS CLASS TAKE GEOLOGY OR SOMETHING LOL
This class is super boring and his tests are pretty difficult. I remember there was about close to 100 people in class and after the first midterm, there was less than 25 people because everyone was failing. If you are not astronomy major, Please take something else! I recommend Tom guffrey and he teaches chem and you can meet the ge requirements.
This guy is such a character! Very eccentric and quite entertaining. The class... well what do you expect?! its a 100 lvl class! It's easy if you go to class, take the quizzes and pay a little attention.
Professor is a nice, friendly man but class was hard to sit through at times. Tests are multiple choice but still hard. Grades on a curve (80% on a test would be an A). You have to study really hard and do all the reading.
He is a very funny guy but it seems to go over the heads of the kids fresh out of high school. Very intelligent and knows astronomy inside and out - good thing since he left NASA as an astronomer to teach and CSULB.
Nicest guy. Always cracking jokes. Very knowledgeable of astronomy. Material was challenging so be prepared to actually crack open your book. 3 tests and 1 final, not too hard if you study. He gives daily quiz points( you still get points for wrong answers)and extra credit opportunities which definitely help out your grade.
Oh Mr Hintzen is a funny guy. He is a faily well teacher though the subject is what makes it difficult. I think if you communicate with him he will help you. He is so generous about points like he will gives u points just for showing up to his lectures. Also I never seen anyone who dress up same thing everyday haha.
Very difficult class. I took it to get an easy A but I was wrong. The exams are extremely difficult. If you decide to take this class make sure you go to SI or just simply stay away pick another GE.
Very wonderful man. Very funny and always gives great examples. Don't need to read book, just attend class. Very easy- just come to class and you get extra credit!!! TAKE HIM!!
So BORING! Wow...bring a laptop or you will die...You really have to go to class, at least you get ETC for that. 4 tests and the rest is extra credit, there's no way to study for the tests other than memorizing the terms in his study guides. You'll get the test and be like WTF on most questions, but he curves a LOT and most people got B's.
He is a funny professor. All you have to do is read the book and you will pass the exams, not to mention that everyday you attend class you also take an extra credit quiz that will only help you in the end. He may be a little intimidating at first, but you get used to it and it is easy and you learn a lot. People who failed this class did nothing!
Prof Hintzen truly cares about the subject, and it shows in his teaching. As long as you pay attention in class and study the terms he gives you, there should be no issues in passing the course. I would highly recommend taking from him if you are taking Astro100 as a GE.
He is very boring and difficult to understand if you don't read the book ahead of time. His expectations are very straightforward and it is easy to pass the tests (or ace them) if you read and do the review sheets. He is a funny guy and is super passionate about science. I was intimidated by the class at first (go to SI) but now I have an A..read!
He may wear the same shirt and pants, but who are we to judge!? A very interesting and funny man! Take notes and read the book (he gives a review sheet b4 every test). Whatever assignment he does give is in preparation for any upcoming test. Quizzes are extra credit, but you DO lose points if you don't take them. Other than that, great guy!
Paul was one of the best GE class profs I've had! I was so NOT excited to take astronomy, and he made it easy for someone who doesnt understand ANY of it, AND i passed the course! So glad I took his class. The tests are very relevant to the study guides. 3 midterms and a final. Very helpful, cares about his students. :)
Prof Hintzen is my favorite teacher. He's always really funny, which can break up the monotony of astronomy. He's very approachable and considerate. He's the 1st teacher to let me postpone my midterm due to sickness. If you just come to class, he's extremely open to working with you. I think his overall R.M.P. grade should be higher!
I love him! he's really funny and fair. he wants ppl to really understand the subject. i like how he always makes jokes about ppl being bored in the class, or about no one doing the reading.
class isnt what it seems...i signed up thinking we'd be learning all about constellations and planets but its a lot of difficult concepts. hintzen is entertaining..hes quite the character...tests are straight from the book and lecture notes. i wouldnt recommend taking this class if theres an alternative.
Professor Hintzen is a great 100 level teacher. He is passionate about astronomy and has very clear lectures. It is really simple to get an A... just do the test review Q's and show up to class everyday and take the quizzes (which are E.C). He is very approachable and cracks a lot of jokes. Everyone who rated him low just didnt go to class
Not my favorite class in my undergrad experience...difficult concepts to grasp. It's not a matter of memorizing facts, its knowing them like the back of your hand, and knowing how to apply it. It was alright I guess, if you want to pass...you're gonna have to attend SI
Class is ridiculous. His lecture is all over the place, and he sometimes doesn't coincide with the textbook. Pop quizzes last the entire semester and negatively affect you if you don't take them. Exams are out of this world. Nice, funny guy. Really difficult course.
The class was difficult because of the material and he is kind of all over the place, but he is always willing to help you. Going to class is important as he gives quizzes which can really help/hurt your grade. He gives you a study guide and some of the questions on the study guide are on the tests.Overall difficult but can get and A or B if u try.
This class was by far THE best I've taken at CSULB. Hintzen stress the importance of not factual memorization but rather the use of logic. Nearly all the concepts taught in class can be applied to everything else. Course consists of 3 Midterms, 1 Final, and Multiple Quizzes. Attendance is stressed. I HIGHLY recommend him; you won't regret it!!!
His class is very interesting and he explains everything very thoroughly. he's a funny guy and his class is chill. but you need to do the readings in order to pass the tests.
This class was the most difficult class I've ever taken. If your taking more than 12 units don't take this class with him bc your study time will be spent with this class. I say take it credit no credit. He doesn't make sense from time to time and annoying ! Take this class with someone else you'll get an easy A trust his class is tough as nails!
best class ever. this was the class that made me want to change my major to physics. great professor, awesome subject. recommend!
Material is already confusing. He will state something and halfway through writing it down he'll say "but you don't need to know that". His lectures are mainly book material. Gives extra credit quizes sometimes. Going to class is not really helpful. Study the book! Go to SI! I don't recommend taking him. 3 midterms. 1 final. (60-70 ?s each)
Read book before class, it will make things easier. Not the hardest class, but tough for a GE. He has a massive curve but still have to do the study guide to do well. Overall, he is a great guy! His class ..not so much. OH and the moon phases will get you :/
Take this class Credit/No Credit. If you do semi-well in half the exams, you will pass.
very nice and funny, material itself was difficult. he gives quizzes that bump your grade, drops your lowest test, and curves like crazy. hard to study for because it's more critical thinking, but he's very nice and helpful
He's a good teacher, knows what he's talking about, and is pretty funny. But he can also be a little all over the place. You could probably pass this class by just reading the book and the handouts (especially if you choose CR/NC). This isn't to say the material isn't difficult because it definitely is.
Knows what he is teaching but doesn't know how to teach it. Read the book and go to class and you can pass with a C easily. He curves the midterms and final, he uses quizzes to bump your grade, and drops your lowest test.
Crazy. Funny. Can't teach well. HUGE curve. If not for the curve people would fail. I got the best grade in the class without reading more than 30% of the 'required' readings. But I went to every class and filled out study guides. If you keep asking questions, he'll repeat the concepts enough that you will understand it enough to pass the tests.
Hilarious, brilliant, yeah, maybe a little crazy. Dude worked for NASA and knows more about the cosmos than anyone you'll meet again on earth. If you're smart you'll take advantage of it and ask him anything you wonder about the way the universe works. If you fall asleep in class, prepare to be pointed out and laughed at.
To pass all you need to do is read the chapters, understand his handouts and he always gives you a study guide on the questions/sections of the ch. that will be on the test. Pass 3 test and you don't have to take the 4th test and you are done with the course, JUST read! and the biggest advice I can give you is GO CLASS, JUST GO and stay!
He is very quirky and probably a genius. Although his exams were not easy, he has a ridiculous curve/gives extra points, so it should be easy to pass. Ask him ?ns about the universe, he loves it and you will be amazed how extraordinary the universe is.I loved this professor-and so will you as long as your willing to learn, not "get through a GE"
Professor Hintzen is a interesting character to say the least. He often wanders throughout the lecture. To make up for this he gives out packets. Study these packets and you will do good in the class. He drops your lowest test score. Curves the grade insanely. Gives pop quizzes. Take his class!
This is not a very easy class for most people as he goes through the lectures very quickly. Nevertheless it is easy to get an A by doing the following. 1. Attend every one of his lectures as he gives you a quiz after each one and gives you extra credit to bump up your grade. 2. Sit in front. He gives useful tips for the midterms.
Okay professor. Goes on tangents quite often, so lectures are sometimes hard to follow. Funny guy though and he can make class pretty entertaining. Fairly easy A if you study and go to class. He realizes this is just a GE, so he makes it easy to pass
Pretty interesting/makes things entertaining. Understands it's a GE and that people are in it cause they have to take it. Curves like crazy. I always fell asleep in class and didn't take many notes, but he does give you a lot of handouts/study guides that tells you EXACTLY what you need to know on your exams. Read the book. It does help a lot.
Don't be afraid when you see the syllabus and when you do your first lab you'll think, "How am I supposed to do this?!" Don't be discouraged! Ask questions! Sometimes he will go off on a tangent and confuse you with extra information, but keep ASKING. Easy grader. Show all your work and you can get EC. Labs and 3 midterms. Understand the labs!
He is one of the most caring and awesome teacher I have had so far. The material is pretty hard to understand but if you actually listen to his lecture, and follow the study guide, you shouldn't have too much problem passing the class. He's very funny and caring. text is not really needed, although sometime he might let you use the text on tests.
I never rated before, but I must warn everyone: don't take this class if you don't like astronomy AND physics. The class is VERY hard. I read the book, went every class, took notes and studied his guides and barely managed to get a B. His test questions are difficult and he gives no practice questions. So you can't even prepare for them. Be warned.
The class is very physics based so if you aren't good at grasping those types of concepts I would stay away. The lectures are really dry and he even laughs about how many people don't pay attention at all. He's a really nice guy but the material is just boring. Helpful outside of class if you go out and talk to him. Quizzes at end for attendance.
First of all, his Astronomy 100 class is definitely NOT an easy GE. He's a nice guy though, he understands most people in class don't want to take the class so he has a different grading scale, and gives us specific study guides. Sit in the front row, pay attention, and read and study from the book! Try to ask a lot of questions if you need help.
Brilliant, humorous professor. He doesn't have the clearest speaking voice, though. There's a huge grading curve: 80% is an A; 62% is a B. This is a very easy physics GE course, but most people struggle because they either fall asleep, or abandon(ed) rudimentary algebra. Pay heed, and you'll learn quite a bit about applied physics and astrophysics!
So, grading scale is simple. Anything over an 80% is an A and anything under a 62% is a C. Claims there are daily quizzes for participation.. but most of the times forgets. I think we did 13 all semester. You can use a 8X11 page of notes on test. Always e-mails a study guide w/ test topics. Hardly went the last two months & still passed!
Liked the class... Honestly read the book. The book helps a lot.
Dr. Hintzen is like a sweet grandpa, though sometimes he can be a little cynical because the students don't really want to be in class (his lectures feel long.) Astronomy is an interesting subject, tests are easy. On your cheat sheet, write down all the constants/numbers and draw diagrams. They are helpful in case you get confused with direction.
He is a great professor. Astronomy is so interesting. I learned more from the book, he goes a little to fast. Read the book to understand concepts
This professor was not the best for teaching but he was really fun and his curves for the test are unbelievable! He was a bit boring and there were mini quizzes, but if you did well on the mini quizzes you didn't have to take the final!
This class is very difficult. All topics discussed feel more like a mathematics or physics course than astronomy. Professor worked for NASA and assumes everyone has prior knowledge about super complex topics. Lectures are boring and confusing. Quizzes every class. Only redeeming this about this class is he curves your grade and offers extra credit.
He´s a very kind prof but he´s a terrible lecturer he goes over topics way to fast and you are definitely gonna need the book if you want to pass. he goes on tangents in lecture. he offers a ton of extra credit opportunities. But GET THE BOOK it´ll save you some trouble.
Don't like the way the class is formatted. I regret taking this course because I thought it would be fairly easy, however, it is not. Especially if you do not have the textbook so make sure you DO purchase it. The concepts ARE difficult. Not sure why this is a night class. He doesn't believe in his own students. I emailed several times for help.
I am an art major but needed to take this class due to GE requirement. He lectures all class, stumbles on his sentences, uses confusing sentence structure, and assumes every student knows the advanced theories through previous knowledge. The Labs are graded purely on correctness, and are never discussed for your future labs.
I love Prof. Hintzen! He's funny and very generous on grades. His lectures do seem to go on a long time, and I learned more from the study guides and textbook. BUT it was very easy to get an A as he curves his exams like crazy and if you take 18/20 of the small quizzes he gives during class he gives your final grade a HUGE boost. Recommend!
Paul is the coolest. I'm bad at math but passed. Students will say he doesn't teach and his grading criteria is difficult to understand; it's not, students are just lazy and don't read the syllabus. READ THE SYLLABUS! 3 midterms and 1 final, but if you pass all the tests you can skip the final. Attendance is important as the quizzes count for them.
May let you leave early to finish your labs on your own time. Recommend to stay for the rest of class time to ask him questions while doing the assignment. He is very kind and, I thought, very funny. There weren't any tests except the final exam which is based off some of the labs. Don't be afraid to answer and ask questions! He'll appreciate it :)
He's cool, just boring. It is obvious that he knows it too because you can literally see other students falling asleep. The course itself is doable.
