very unpredictable
Didn't care if subject matter was learned, more interested in being difficult.
Mummbled through everything, Tip! Memorize the book
No Comments
Unplesant, unhelpful- just plain difficult
Should cut his sarcasim and mumble less. Otherwise the class is not that difficult if you study the notes and pay attentiion in class--just make sure to pair up with a buddy to study with because he is very unaproachable and makes students feel dumb if they have a question.

Worst teacher ever! mumbles through the whole class, very unorganized. no sense of what it is really like to be a student, unhelpful. He will overload you and not explain, basically you teach yourself from the book.
Avoid at all costs!! I dropped his class 2 weeks in. Mumbles, boring, monotone. Go for Andresen!!!!
I liked Holdaway. I agree he can be stern with students who expect to be hand fed but he is VERY fair and wil help students who are really interested in working hard! Don't take this class if you just want to pass. Take it if you want to be challenged.
He is very unclear and I know he knows what he's talking about but he needs to know how to teach it. He doesn't really give notes, so just read the book and don't go to class.
Very unapproachable, sarcastic. Knows information well, forgets many students do not know this information and the class is a basic review for himself. Read the book, Teach yourself. Good Luck.
He had NO office hours available and went really fast with the hard material. I dropped his class in the middle of the second day...need I say more?
He knows his material well, but doesn't seem to be able to get the material across in a effective way!!! I would have to say that you need to spend a lot of time at the library studying!!!
Very challenging and sometimes it was hard to keep up with the material, but I felt he knew his subject matter well and I always found the lectures interesting. His sarcasm is just his sense of humor. He is a good guy.
His anatomy class is not easy but this is COLLEGE. You can't be lazy and expect to easily pass his class, you have to work for the grade. If you study and pay attention to the lectures you will learn a lot of interesting things. I was worried because I heard bad things about him before I took anatomy but he is a cool and funny guy.
He just says the stuff. Hes not nice to the students he just hands out info and thats it.
he should retire, is not stern rude to students locks them out of lecture , laughs at students, does not clairify material
although i had to definitely work to get the grade in his class, he taught the material well and i really respected his great knowledge base. he is a bit dry in humor, but you just have to accept that as his style. he was a cool prof. if you're really interested in anatomy and you're willing to work a little bit, i'd recommend the class.
Anatomy req major study commitment from students no matter who you take. Wish he'd hand out outlines we could fill in and actually follow these in lecture. We'd follow along better which = better learning. It's a LOT of material to cover but if you work hard, you'll be ok. Treats us as adults. Biggest complaint= not being allowed coffee in class!
Presenatations lack logical sequence!!!Hard to follow/jumps around which makes material difficult, then tries to dumb down material in an effort to relate it to us & clarify or simplify but it only confuses us even more! Wish he would create a logical sequence, outline, FOLLOW IT & use the REAL words! Has materials but he doesn't follow them!

This class is very hard and Paul makes it worse! His lectures are scattered and he has 15 different names for everything. He doesn't give you an outline so it is difficult to pay attention to what is going on in lecture because you are trying to write so fast!

DONT TAKE HIM FOR BIO 161!
Very hard class, he makes it worse because he is scattered in his teaching
DON'T TAKE HIM FOR BIO 161 OR ANY CLASS. HE IS A HORRIBLE TEACHER, VERY DISORGANIZED! HE IS NOT FAIR. FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU'RE LATE HE DEDUCTS POINTS. HE IS NOT FAIR AS FAR AS GRADING. IF YOU'RE FIVE POINTS FROM A "C" GOOD LUCK IN GETTING IT. ALSO, HE DOES NOT REVIEW FOR EXAMS. HE IS A TERRIBLE TEACHER, ALL OVER THE PLACE.
Does anyone get an A in his class???
Class is very hard! Professor is very disorganized and his lectures are hard to follow being that he jumps all over the place. Worst of all, he does not give you an outline to follow. At any rate, don't take him for bio 161, you'll regret it.
OMG pretty damn hard. If you want to pass Hum Anatomy (The class he "taught" me.) you might as well just read the whole damn book & just study off of that & the huge packet of bones/muscle/tissue he gives you. Nothing i learned in his lab's/lectures really helped. The fig****s in lab helped tho. He sux, u have to have good study skills to pass.
I posted the post below this one and they starred out the word I used for the plastic model/mannequin things we used in lab to learn the different muscles bc it had the U word that stands for one's piss lol So hopefully you understood what I was trying to say!
don't take bio 135 with this teacher!!! he doesnt even teach. you must read the book and study it like everyday to pass. his tests are very hard, when you ask him a question he doesn't want to help you. he just says to read the book. he is a horrible teacher, loves science but doesnt teach at all!! if you want to make friends in your class, don
HOLDAWAY IS BY THE FAR THE WORST, AND I MEAN WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! HE IS TRULY TERRIBLE! I WOULDN'T WISH HIM ON MY WORST ENEMY! HE DOESN'T TEACH, HE MUMBLES, HE RAMBLES, HE IS DISORGANIZED, HE IS HORRIBLE! DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS. I GO TO EVERY CLASS READY TO LEARN AND GET NOTHING FROM HIS LECTURES. HE'S THAT BAD!
WORST TEACHER ON THE PLANET!!!
professor holdaway is sometimes confusing but he is also willing to clarify things for you.everybody said he is horrible but I took him anyway, and I got an A. Yes, if you want an easy A get maybe prof. Andresen, but if you really want to study anatomy in depth get Holdaway.
He is a easy going teacher and tests straight from his notes. Although, he doesn't allow you to drink in class (not even water) and yells at you if he sees you drinking. Will claify anything you have questions on. Doesn't offer much extra credit, if at all. The quizzes are easy and can really help your grade if you study for them ahead of time.
His lectures are a waste of time he's boring, but you can't miss his labs. The good thing is, his style will push you hard, and if you are motivated, good for you he is the man to help you to learn all the stuff you need so that you can excel later. He may be the catalyst but isn't really involved, you have to learn everything by yourself
Prof. holdaway has a unique style. He seems a little disorganized, but REALLY knows his stuff. He is very open to questions and will answer with great depth and clarity. He absolutely pushes you to do your best, which forces you to fully underdstand each concept. I learned more from these two classes than any others I've ever taken.
This is the hardest class i have ever taken. I did everything I possibly could to study the material. He makes his tests impossibly hard on purpose- I went into the tests thinking that I knew all the information, and then when he would pass them back i would get a D on the test. Lab tests are impossible! Don't take him.
Very disorganized. His study guides just basically chapter reviews. Couldnt care less about the actual students. Attendance is a must. Pretty good in lab, tho. He actually participates.
This class was extremely hard! All I did is study all summer. I busted my butt and I got an A. If you truly want to learn anatomy then take him because you will know it after this class. Reading these comments I almost did not take him, but I am glad I did. Create your own opinion! AND Dont be late to class, he will call you out :-) Good luck!!!
This is by far the worst professor, I have ever had! His lectures are horrific. He rambles to himself and his thoughts are all over the map. It was simply eaiser to read the book. The school administration should retire this man asap!
This is the worst professor ever in the history of man. He teachs at a Phd. level and does not care if his students are just high school graduates! He uses 1950's terminology and this is 2008! He should retire ASAP!
Professor Holdaway teaches his class as if all students are scientists. The clarity of his marerial was horrible, and his borderline deafness made the class frustrating.
holdaway lives for physiology. unapproachable and answers a question with another question...expects you to figure out the hows and whys from the book and his notes.
Everyone who cries about how they didnt pass ect. probably did not spend much time in the library! Holdaway was a great teacher,I took Bio 160 before with Rector and he was way better. Yes the class is hard, yes it may cut into your social life but its SCHOOL. Spend time in the library and answer the study questions he gives you and you'll do fine.
He basically lectures on his outlines that are provided on Blackboard. There is really no need to purchase the book unless you know nothing about human diseases. Tests and quizzes are on what he lectures in the class. Lots of info in a short period of time. If you study, it's an easy A. I've been out of high school 30 yrs and got a an A.
He was a bit of a shock the first day of class but I grew to really respect and enjoy this professor. Students taking this class are going into careers where this knowledge should be learned, and learned well. Holdaway holds you to this standard, as he should be! I liked his rules, and he pushed me to do my best. He really knows his stuff as well.
Im in Cardiac Technology and I am so glad Paul was my teacher.. Everyone else in my class that whated an easy ride and took another teacher is so lost now that we are in classes that are more indepth... Great teacher!!
WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS... pray that he retires!!!
He's a nice guy but horrible for taking human anatomy. I usually get straight A's and this is the only class I didn't and I tried extremely hard. He doesn't care about helping you and would rather see you fail than do well.
I feel bad for giving him a bad rating because hes a nice man, but a horrible teacher. I would study for hours on end, and still would only get D's on the tests. DO NOT TAKE HIM!! He said not to use the study guide to study, and reading the book is a "waste of time" he assumes u know the material save yourself the hassel, take a different teacher
If you want to get a good grade in this class, (1) go to every lecture and write down everything Holdaway says in your notes, (2) rewrite your notes so they make sense to you, (3) read your notes as many times as you can, (4) look at the body models until you start seeing them in your nightmares, and (5) MEMORIZE (notes, lab handouts, etc.)
This professor is horrible. He lets you learn all of the information by yourself especially in lab, he is very bad, do not take him.
He's not a good teacher, portrays himself as nice, but does not teach as to get the students thinking. He holds all the info to himself. An A student like me finds his class boring. His multiple choice questions are not clear cut choices, usually involve choosing more than one letter, designed to confuse you I did better on the essays questions. BAD!
He is not a teacher that will TRY AND HELP YOU. He does not show he wants you to learn. Tests very difficult. Answers marked wrong when right. teaches from text from previous yr. not current.
I had Holdaway this past fall for Anatomy, I really disliked his class. I've had many amazing Biology teachers at Harper and he is not one of them. For people who need a solid Anatomy or Physiology grade for a competitive major, I would suggest picking a different teacher for those classes.
You will DIE if you take him! I know lectures aren't fun, but his is TERRIBLY boring! His lecture tests are 70(!) questions while other teachers only have 50 for their tests. NOT APPROACHABLE AT ALL! Expects you to know practically everything about Anatomy before you even walk in the room. If you are talking him, all i have to say is Good Luck.
He seems to really care about the subject he teaches. But he is a horrible teacher. Every comment below this is soo true. He gets confused on his own slides, his tests have questions that he didn't cover at all. He doesn't cover a majority of the text so going to class is a MUST!! I went to class everyday studied hard and still got a C.
He does not care if you show up or not. He does not care if you have a question because he'll just answer you with another question. Considering this is a class most majors require and its a deal breaker for the Nursing program, it's very sad that this man teaches it. He cares about the subject, but just cannot convey it.
I was 13 years out of school, this is my second language, I have a job and a son and worked hard and got an A. He pushes you to do your best, and you know your stuff after this class. If you're sitting in class checking your facebook on your cellphone and don't pay attention you will fail. If you work hard, it pays off.
I knew next to nothing about anatomy before his class and know feel very confident in my knowledge. It was hard work and totally worth it. If you're a serious student, he's very helpful. If you're going to cry about your grades don't expect any handouts. You'll get exactly what you earn.
He knows his material and I am confident I will learn a great deal in this class. With that said I have never had a less understanding and compassionate teacher in my life. He thinks this class and himself are the only thing you have going on in your life.
He knows the material but this is the first college professor I've had that takes off for being 2 mins late to class and then holds it against you the rest of the semester. His teaching style is dated and you can tell that he is bored of teaching this subject. He was also the only professor I've had at Harper that refused to use "BlackboardOnline".
I thought he was a very knowledgeable teacher, and threw in a few jokes sometimes. But, he certainly knows his stuff. He is very helpful if you ask. His tests are hard, but this is a hard class to begin with. I recommend him!
He knows the material (Physiology) but can't teach well. Students are copying his PP from the screen since he's refusing to give it out. The tests are extremely hard. You can't miss a class, be late or drink in the class. Very old school professor. I'll withdraw from this class and retake it w/ another teacher. It's the 1st class I hate at Harper.
I took this teacher 7 years ago for anatomy and wasn't a serious student yet so I failed. I took him again (not having a choice) but absolutely loved him. He is strict on attendance in lab but not in lecture. If you truly study, you'll do good and he is very helpful if you ask and sees that you truly want to learn and do well. study +passed
I looked on this website prior to taking his class and was discouraged. But after taking him I respect Mr. Holdaway. He's a great teacher and knows his material. Don't pay for this class if you're not going to work hard at it to earn your grade. He is approachable, and compassionate about what he does. He's a funnt guy and loves what he does.
I had Holdaway for anatomy also. He definitely knows his stuff and expects a lot out of his students. His tests are extremely difficult, and sometimes thats a little discouraging. He is a funny guy and likes to throw in some lame jokes. I went in during his office hours and he was helpful with that. Its a very difficult course no matter who your te
I had this teacher for Physiology, you'll be grabbing your hair. I didn't understand half of the stuff he talked about. He went over the material that's really important in five minutes while something that was very simple and everyone understood he spent a half an hour on. He has no powerpoint you can print, does not use blackboard
After reading all the comments on here, I was extremely discouraged from taking Holdaway. But I actually enjoyed his class! The class is very tough, and theres a lot of material, but I thought his study guides for exams were helpful and his exams were fair. Just don't eat or drink in class and you're fine. Its a touch class with anyone. Study hard.
I can't believe this guy is still teaching at harper. All these bad reviews, it's true! we had probably 70 people in class it's lecture first for 2 hours then lab work for 2. Everyone felt the same way about him, he doesn't answer questions-let's someone in class answer a students question, his tests are crazy difficult!
I agree with some comment below, his lecture isnt really helpful because he speaks really fast and he "mumbles." His labs are easy if you study for them. Some ppl say he is not approachable but he actually is. Good personality, does make jokes here and there but its bio160 study and succeed. :)
I can usually understand any teacher and with out studying get by with a C. His lectures are so boring he put me to sleep. I would not recommend this teacher to ANYONE. He's difficult and shouldn't be teaching at Harper anymore.
I disagree with these posts. I have my b.s. and master's. If you want to understand anatomy, take Holdaway. If you want a good grade and don't need the information presented in this course for future programs, take someone else. I love him.
Anatomy is class you take because you need to learn. Can't expect to have a teacher just talk and you get an easy "A" His lecture and notes were exactly like the test and if you paid attention and actually did his study guide for tests you got an "A" He was very approachable and I enjoyed his class a lot!! One of my FAVORITES!!
worst teacher ever. he knows nothing unless you have a Ba or have studied something before this class, then run from this class. he is the worst teacher i have ever had
Mr. H knows material but can not teach. His lectures are dry and not interesting. He gets confused on his own slides, his tests have questions that he didn't cover at all. I got a good grade bc I study hard and not bc of his teaching skills...
He is a great teacher. He makes you study hard so you can learn the material. If you want to learn Anatomy then take him. Its a hard class and you need to make a huge effort to study every day. If you just want an A to get over the class and to not learn anything, then take another teacher. If not, Holdaway is the guy to help you.
Prof Holdaway is not the easiest...but we ARE college students. He knows the material, is very helpful, has a great sense of humor. Once you learn how he works, the class really is not that bad! Go in with an open mind, apply yourself, and you will do just fine... If my schedule permitted, I would have taken him for 161.
I truly believe that most of the previous comments were made by fresh-out-of-high school students. Mr Holdaway knows his material, his lectures are interesting, he strongly hints on what exams will cover and has study guides. I slacked and still ended with a B. The subject in general is very detailed and hard to learn- just gotta work at it!
Likes teaching the class but when you ask a question makes you feel stupid. Slides are simple and he's too lazy to post the grades or the power-points. You have to listen and read your notes because that's what his tests are mostly on. But even then some of the questions on the lab exam have different models than we learned on.
i did not like mr. holdaway he did not prepar us for the tests we took a ton of notes and he gave us a stdy guid but almost none of the information he gave us was on the test and he got confused alot in class
I respect this teacher alot, even though I got a C in his class in the end, he is very helpful and patient with his students. This is college, Mr.Holdaway is not going to hold his hand every step of the way. You need to learn this urself or just drop because then your just wasting your time. If i took this class alone. I would ace it in his class.
One of the best professors at harper. Very helpful he goes out of his way to help his students. work hard and will get an A easily.
Not the best teacher....He can"cover" three chapter in one lecture...It is ridiculous!!! I Like Regina Rector style she is very knowledgeable teacher.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!! I had him for Introduction to Human Disease and it was the worse class/experience I have ever had! He goes through the power points so fast that you have no time to take notes, he just stands there and talks the whole, and if you ask him for the power points he does not make them available to students. Do NOT take his class!!
Excellent teacher! He makes you work for it but if you do not know or study the material, then what's the point? Good guy and he will work with you.
