Paul was an amazing professor. He had very clear lectures, and added humor in wherever he could. He would also be available after class to ask questions to, and his explanations topics very clear. He is the best professor I have ever had.
Absolute W professor. He taught with more passion than Hao Shen's passionate TA.
the best professor i've had in my first two semesters at uw. he explains every concept in great detail and even finds a way to bring humor into his lectures everyday. he loves tea.
Dr. Hooker was the best science teacher I have ever had! He was so kind in his explanations and lectures were VERY engaging and I felt super prepared for the exams based on his teaching and advice as to how to do well. He made the content a challenge to overcome, all while making it interesting to be there. I wish I could take him again!
I had Professor Hooker for Chem 104, and I would highly recommend him for any chemistry class. He tells at least a few dad jokes in every lecture, and he points out what material will be on exams during his lectures. He does a good job going through each type of problem that you'll be expected to do in quizzes/exams in class as well.
Very funny guy who seems very passionate about teaching students basic chemistry. had very good conversations with him about renewable energy and felt like he cared about my success in the class.
Dr. Hooker has great lectures and tries to add humor and make them all enjoyable. He's a really nice guy and he's crazy smart too. This class is quite demanding, as is any chem course, so be prepared to spend most of your time on it. I'm terrible at chem and likely would have failed without him as a professor. Definitely choose him if you can!
Took both chem 103/104 with Paul hooker, amazing lecturer. He really explains the material well, whereas some of my friends in other lectures with other professors didn't have the same experience. I got As in both. love the British accent. course was hard, he made it fun.
Dr. Hooker is a proficient and well-respected chemistry professor at UW - Madison. He makes seemingly difficult concepts easier to understand, and is clear, concise, and straightforward. I was one of his students for both CHEM 103 (B grade) and CHEM 104 (A grade) - his lectures are engaging and well worth the time, so don't skip them!
i love this british man so much.
Paul has been my favorite professor in my first year at UW-Madison. He made lectures interesting and explained concepts very well. He is very understanding and compassionate. I recommend him to anyone that is taking General Chem. There is nobody better than this man!!!
He spoke clearly and was a very interactive professor. Overall a nice experience
He is absolutely hilarious and keeps you engaged and the conversation light while he teaches.
CHEM 103 sucks, but good ol' Paul Hooker makes it bearable. If you must endure this class, you HAVE to have Professor Hooker. Lots of homework, quizzes, and hard tests, but unfortunately that is the course itself and not his doing. Everyone loves this silly British man, and he will 100% help you better grasp the material.
I love this man, I am just bad at chemistry.
Absolutely loved Dr. Hooker. He keeps his lectures interesting and engaging given it is a general chemistry class. Gen Chemistry is rough but having Dr. Hooker as a professor helps. Definitely try to get him as your professor.
I love coming to chem class because I am engaged the whole time. He adds a few jokes in each lecture which helps them be more interesting. The tests were super hard, especially coming from someone who only took general chemistry in high school. I had to put in a lot of extra work to be up to the level that was expected of me.
Dr. Hooker is an amazing professor for CHEM 103. He makes chemistry interesting and he cares that students understand the material. However, the class is hard and the exams are very hard, but the curve helps. If you put in the work and commit time, you will do just fine.
Paul Hooker is a fantastic lecturer. He delivers the content well and is entertaining and quite funny. He is good at responding to emails and is flexible when it comes to his students' needs. His exams are difficult but the class is curved so it's not too bad. Overall if you have the opportunity to have him as a lecturer I would definitely take it.
Professor Hooker was AWESOME to say the least. He is very engaging and interactive with his lectures, even though it is 300+ students he is able to teach well and have a fun lecture. The material is hard, but Professor Hooker makes it much easier with his easy to follow slides and helpful notes. I would recommend him to everyone for Chem 103!
Absolutely loved Dr.Hooker. He is so knowledgeable and wants you to do well. Chem 103 is challenging and honestly depends on how good your TA is. Show up for lecture and take notes on the slides he gives out. Overall super amazing, just be prepared to be humbled
Professor Hooker is very funny and you can tell he actually cares about his students. That being said I would say his chem sections could have the lowest grades because his tests are so hard. Also some TAs are definitely a lot more knowledgeable than others. Overall I was happy to have him and the curve is huge. Just pray everyone does as bad as u
Chem 103 is a lot of work, but Dr. Hooker has very fun and interesting lectures.
Paul Hooker is a great prof and the reason why I haven't dropped. APchem was the most difficult class I took in high school, due it being online. I hated chemistry, but Paul Hooker's lectures, his humor made me love chem. It's still challenging, and still my worst subject, but my goodness it would have been so much worse with a different professor.
Dr. Hooker keeps the lectures fun although they are sometimes boring. Grading is clearly laid out. There is tons of outside resources.
I took him for chem 103 and am currently taking his class for chem 104. He is one of the greatest professors I have ever had. He takes the time for each student, staying long after lectures answering students' questions. He also is very entertaining and knows how to hold your attention. His lectures are easy to follow and are very interesting.
I understood every concept very clearly because of his wonderful teaching. I would say show up to lecture because I would be able to notice my understanding of the concepts in class would be much worse after missing even just one lecture
Hooker always kept lectures interesting. He is excellent at explaining tough topics in a simple way to understand. He showed he really cared about his students.
A great professor that often creates funny stories and examples to keep the class engaged. There is a lot of homework and pre-lecture assignments, but there are only 5 fairly easy quizzes. The tests are moderately hard but if you studied like in Chem 1, you should be fine. In the end, 25% of the class is guaranteed A so there will be a good curve.
Dr Hooker is such a good professor. The material can be challenging as it is a chemistry course, naturally it is difficult. However, Dr Hooker makes his lectures so fun and engaging and cares greatly about the wellbeing of his students and is extremely approachable. If you struggle with chem, I totally recommend Hooker.
Great professor, unlike some professors, he doesn't assume that anything he teaches is easy, so he breaks it down in a way. He's very humble and understands that the students aren't yet chemistry wizards. That being said, the class is extremely difficult but with the curve and receiving the help you can get through it. Very funny and kind as well.
I cannot wrap my head around chemistry, so I dropped it. But with Dr. Hooker, I was able to understand it a little but more. Dr. Hooker is great at explaining the content and is engaged with his students during lectures. Many jokes incorporated as well.
Dr. Hooker was amazing. He was very funny in lecture, and he got through a lot of content in 50 minutes and made the content seem easy. When I had to reach him outside of class to discuss a personal matter, he was accessible and very understanding of my situation. Although I did not like the class content, I highly recommend him as a professor.
Best Professor ever. Lectures are well structured and I always learn and laugh a lot. Prepare to get horrible grades on your exams, but there is a curve.
Professor Hooker was amazing. Gave amazing lectures. As long as you put in your work, you will do fine. The quizzes were not bad. The exams were difficult, but this is to be expected as it is a weed-out class. However, the amount of dedication Professor Hooker puts into this class definitely gives you the foundation to succeed.
Had him as a roundtable leader in the Bradley Learning Community. He is funny and super smart. Would have loved to have him as a chem prof, he seems really smart and entertaining.
Super fun lecturer who made chemistry not only an interesting class but fairly easy. Staying on top of assignments is key. There are so many resources he and the chemistry department offer for this class which make it easy to succeed. Would definitely take his class again.
Paul made a daunting class and topics very accessible with his lecture style. He crammed in a lot of information and the lectures were definitely fast paced, but there was enough anecdotal commentary and humor added in to make the information feel digestible, even though there was a lot of it. There was an abundance of resources for the content!
The GOAT.
Professor Hooker is an amazing professor. His lectures keep everyone engaged, even when the topics can be a little boring. The class is somewhat difficult to do well in, but it's graded on a curve, so it entirely depends on how well the rest of the class does (top 25% get an A). He's a great person and will absolutely give help during office hours.
hard class, but he is amazing. id marry him if i could :) i turned in a lab late once and he didnt care, so lovely
Chem 103 is a lot of work, but Professor Hooker is an awesome lecturer who is clearly a master of his craft-- both in chemistry and in teaching. I would definitely recommend taking him.
Paul is genuinely one of the best professors I have ever had. He actually makes learning fun and engaging and the concepts very easy to understand.
Although chemistry is the bane of my existence, Dr. Hooker made lectures enjoyable. He is funny and very knowledgeable. He respects his students and TAs. Great professor all around.
Just another review saying Dr. Hooker is awesome and chem 108 might as well be chem 08 because he makes it that easy.
I really enjoyed all of Dr. Hookers lectures. He truly made chemistry not only very logical but also very fun! I feel like the difficulty of his class was very fair in comparison to other chem 104 classes. He is one of those professors that is able to create such an amazing environment in his lectures.
It's Chem 103 so it's going to be hard, but professor Hooker makes it so much better. I had him for the longer lecture period and he keeps everyone engaged the whole time. He's super funny and nice, if you're taking 103 try to get him.
Good lecturer and funny guy, but moved at such a slow pace. Our class was an entire lecture behind the other sections and it didn't help when it came time for lab. Pre-Class assignments were ahead as well and didn't go with lecture very often. Just an average professor.
He was a fun lecturer to watch and extremely helpful in office hours. He was more than willing to answer any questions and did so very clearly. He is definitely the reason I passed chem 103 and 104. I would highly recommend taking chemistry with him
He was a very good lecturer and explained concepts well. I have nothing bad to say about the man.
Dr. Hooker was extremely funny, which made long chemistry lectures less monotonous. He explained concepts extremely well during class and was extremely kind when answering questions at the end of class. Would definitely take another class with him again.
Genuinely the best professor I've ever had. You would expect chem lectures to be very boring and uninteresting but professor Hooker makes them so much better. This class isn't easy nonetheless, but it's a lot better overall if he's your professor. He makes sure every class that he takes lectures slow so all students can grasp material very well.
Chem 103 is a really tough class, but if you have to take it I would definitely try to get Professor Hooker. He explains difficult chem content SO well, and he's also hilarious and makes the class engaging. I'm not sad to be done with chemistry but I'll definitely miss professor Hooker.
Amazing teacher with amazing and interesting lectures. What he puts on the exams are always covered in lectures. Very nice one on one and has lots of office hour times. Amazing!
Extremely helpful and knowledable. He explains things in a way that make sense to people with no chem background. Cares about your performance in his class, and never makes you feel dumb for asking questions. He olds extra office hours during exam week which is great. Highly recommend both 103 and 104 with him if possible.
Paul is AMAZING! I loved every one of his lectures and he made the content easy to understand and exciting to learn about. You can tell he genuinely loves to teach (rare from a prof) and cares deeply for his students. This was the best class I took this semester; he motivated me to work hard in his class.
Professor Hooker was amazing. Chem 103 is a difficult class and I am not a person who likes chemistry, but he made it a lot more enjoyable and manageable. His lectures are entertaining and you can tell he cares. If you have to take 103 I highly recommend Hooker!
Chemistry is a really tough class but Prof. Hooker makes it so worth it. He's hilarious and made me want to show up to class.
Paul Hooker my goat!! He is an amazing lecturer, very funny and engaging. Chem 103 is a very assignment heavy class, but it begins to feel routinely after a week or two. He is excellent at presenting the course content. Do not miss lecture- attendance isn't taken but you will fall behind. If you are struggling, ask him or a TA for help!
Prof. Hooker is good-natured and likeable- his lectures were definitely engaging and enjoyable. He provides detailed explanations and examples, which definitely makes a difficult subject easier. However, due to that, our section was almost always behind the other sections, which caused quite a few problems. Apart from that, awesome instructor.
He was nice, just super inaccessible outside of class and it sometimes felt like he really just didn't care.
great professor
I love him so much that at the end of toay's class (his last lecture for me) I cried. The BEST, BEST professor ever.
Fantastic professor, engaging and very obviously knows his stuff. I took chem 103 and 104 with him, got an A in 103 and AB in 104. I hate chemistry but his lectures were the only thing that made it bearable. Amazing professor
I had Professor Hooker my first semester of freshman year for Chemistry 103 and he was amazing. Lectures are mandatory (TopHat questions are part of your grade), but are enjoyable and incredibly useful for exams. Some of the exams were hard, but if you take the time outside of class and discussion to work on practice problems, you'll be fine.
Had him for Chemistry 103 fall sem of 2024 and loved him as a professor. Lectures were mandatory but entertaining, coming from someone who doesn't love chemistry. Lectures and discussion are important, and you will still have to do a lot of practice problems on your own. He also came dressed as a pack of Skittles for Halloween.
chem is a hard class so you'll still have to work a lot outside of class to do well in this class, but prof hooker is a great teacher and is very in depth, which makes the hard material easier to understand. take with this prof if you can, class averages are significantly higher!
wow i love paul hooker. one of the best profs ive ever had, and i wish i could have him as my professor for the rest of my life.
Good at teaching, good looking, and british. Do you need anything else?
Hooker was a pretty cool professor. Engaging lectures, very understanding of illness and whatnot, and exams were not too bad.
Great prof, funny guy. Really understands how students learn; takes it slow, explains every step, doesn't try to over complicate anything. Super calm and collected lecturing style, feels like you're listening to a podcast. You can tell he's been doing this for a long time.
Hooker is the BEST Chem 104 prof PERIOD. His lectures are very engaging, he is very active on piazza, and gives VERY fair exams that actually test concepts learned and not trying to trick you. Also Hooker explains the material in a very simple way in lecture that makes the chemistry seem simple. Highly recommend asking TAs & using piazza for help.
I took my glorious king Paul Hooker for both 103 and 104 and got an A in both. He has good, engaging lectures and even though he sometimes takes it slow and gets the class slightly behind, he does it to explain the difficult topics and always catches up before the next exam. I highly recommend taking chem with professor Hooker!
Such a great professor! I had him for Chem103, and chose to have him again for 104 because of how great his teaching style is. Chemistry is a tough subject, but somehow Hooker makes it fun, and you will genuinely look forward to lecture. Expectations are clear, and exams are definitely tough but fair.
Best professor I have ever had. His teaching is clear and he is good at answering questions. The tests matched the class content very well and Professor Hooker provides lots of resources for studying and practicing.
Cool British guy.
Incredible Professor! His lectures were very informative and interesting. Learned lots from him.
Paul hooker is amazing, and his lectures are really fun and enjoyable to attend. The exams are tough, but it's expected. He does get off topic at points about the Premier League and tea. But other than that, he is hands down amazing, and I wish I had him for 104.
Such a great professor and hilarious. Would take his class over again!
Paul Hooker is the best chemistry teacher in the UW-Madison chem department. Chem 103 is a rigorous course, but Paul prepares you well. Lectures reflect quizzes and exams. Also, he is very entertaining during his lectures. He teaches in a way where you want to learn more. He has a soothing voice and a british accent which accentuates the lectures.
Don't know what more you could want out of a professor. It is a tough class, but he does about as good of a job as anyone could. Sometimes he gets a little behind, but anything he doesn't get to is taken out of the exam. Overall a great professor who clearly wants his students to succeed.
All topics are explained very well, and he is a very fair grader. He is also the only reason that I liked Chemistry.
Professor Hooker is an incredibly engaging and funny lecturer. Lectures were very well organized and he is a very clear instructor, although he sometimes got behind. Quiz and exam problems were great to build on knowledge instead of just being repetitions of problems in class. He was an even better instructor outside of class during office hours.
Professor Hooker is one of the greatest professors I've ever had. He explains concepts in a clear and easy to understand manner and exemplifies everything a great professor should be.
He is passionate about chemistry and has engaging lectures. Hard to get to his office hours, recommend talking after class. Made chemistry more bearable for me.
Amazing professor for such a hard class. He makes lectures interesting and is very clearly passionate about the subject.
Paul was the best! His lectures were engaging and clear, and he did not mind getting a little behind to make sure he was going over the material thoroughly. The exams are very difficult, but Paul prepares you better than anyone could. I recommend doing all the practice problems possible. Your notecard will not save you on exams.
Chem 103 is a difficult class and it is a lot of work, but Hooker is a fantastic professor. He is passionate, knowledgeable, and great at explaining the concepts. He is also a charismatic guy and is engaging during lecture. I'd definitely recommend.
Professor Hooker genuinely cares about his students and is very approachable outside of class. His lectures are clear and thorough. Chemistry isn't easy, so readings take time, but expectations are always clear. Exams are fair. The midterms test your ability to apply concepts, while the final is easier. Highly recommend going to office hours.
