Horton is a very difficult teacher. He expects you to know everything and all exams are essay form. VERY DIFFICULT. I could see him being a professor for chemistry majors. Plus he is very boring.
great teacher. Extreamly knowledgeble of all science. When you finish you have a very good grasp of chem. boring, but very willing to help students. the class is not that hard. Good professor took him twice

Very good teacher, knows what he is talking about, but expects you to study and understand what he is teaching. Be prepared to study
This gentlemen is a true genius of all sciences. And he is quite the sci-fi nerd too, which is always good for a science teacher, chem class I could imagine being a tad tough, but Earth science is a breeze. Dr. Horton rocks, hes really knowledgeable and thorough
Some students won't like his teaching style or tests, but if you listen, take notes and do the homework, there is NO reason you can't get a good grade in his class. I wish I had taken him for organic chemistry!

Well, I like his teaching methods so far. His tests, in reference to the few I've taken so far, will take some adjustment to get used to... just a matter of keeping up on the reading for clarification appose to hours cramming the night before.
Good teacher. He presents the material so that it is easy to understand and it's not really boring. I'd like to take him for Chemistry or whatever else he teachers. If you pay attention and read, you'll get an A, no problem.
Dr. Horton is a great teacher. Science has always been my worst subject, so I've struggled through this class, but he's been more than willing to help out when I ask him. He can seem a little harsh and hard to approach at first, but he's a really good teacher, especially if you have trouble with this subject.
Dr. Horton is a very nice teacher, he's very clear on what you are expected to know. gives practice problems that you can do (not mandatory) ...the only thing is the tests are fill in the blanks, no multiple choice
Horton is great! Has a very deadpan sense of humor. Can be intimidating at times because it appears as if he is cranky or grouchy, but that's not the case, he's very cool. Well organized class; he explains the material very well and with much clarity. Tests aren't too hard. You can get an A if you try.

I took him for Chem 1 lec and hated his class. Indeed, he knows his stuff, but he is very unapproachable. I tried to take another instructor for Chem 2 but ended up taking him for lab. My lab partner and I hated him! Whenever we asked questions, he seemed irritated.
His labs are easay once you understand the material. Thats sometimes a challenge b/c he doesn't seem to like to answer questions. When you ask him a Q he seems annoyed that you don't know. This makes it uncomfortable to ask him questions. My lab partner and I would take turns asking questions b/c of this.
Horton is awesome. He is the in my top 5 out of all 70+ teachers I have had. He seems to be unapproachable at first, but once you get to know him, he's great. As long as you do your part, you will pass. Take him, and his lab. Also, he says stuff that is true and straight forward, we all laugh, he doesn't. Funny guy. Best of the best.
There is no doubt in my mind that Mr. Horton hates his job!! He really makes you feel uncomfortable when you ask him a question and acts irritated that need help. Overall the class is pretty easy I got an A but just unpleasant to be around. GET DR.LOHER if possible.
Took the class online got a VERY easy A. Had to go to a testing center to take the tests but otherwise he makes it very easy to pass the class. All of the questions on the tests come directly from the online homework and gives A LOT of extra credit. Also drops lowest test and 2 homework grades. Although through email he seems kind of rude.
i felll alseep everyday. i am just now going into highschool and took a dual enrollment class and he is completly MONOTONED. nice guy, boring class
Horton is a really good teacher. I would recommend him highly.
He is a great prof, really knowledgable and he really challenges u. That is why u learn alot from the class. Took over Summer, so there was exam every week. His manner can make u uneasy to ask him quest, but after a bit u warm up to him. If ur a science major, take him b/c ur foundation will really be built solid! Gotta work hard to get good grade.
Switched from Jones' lab to his b/c Jones not good lab prof. Wished I couldve taken Horton for lec. too, then I would've learned the material! Lab is pretty straight forward, the exams are all right in difficulty level. He is pretty helpful and u can ask him questions if you are stuck.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had at IRCS. I had and A in lecture with a different instructor but had trouble trying to pass his lab! You cant ask him questions because he makes you feel like an idiot. Hard to understand the directions. One time I asked him to repeat something and he called me an idiot for asking him to repeat.
May seem abrubt at first until you get to know him, then he is quite interesting. I have come away from his class with a new love for everything science and often repeat things I learned in his class to others. Take him for the challenge.
At first I thought I wasn't going to like him, but Dr. Horton turned out to be an excellent teacher. I took chem as an online class baddd idea but I had him for my lab too and he helped me everyday after my lab, but you are going to have to actually work hard in this class... the grade isnt given to you
I don't think he is a great teacher. He obviously lives and breathes chemistry and expects everyone else to know just as must about it as him. This was an intro class but I think he made it harder just because it is easy to him. I never had chemistry before so it seemed pretty hard to me and he wasn't very helpful.
Dr Horton is a fantastic instructor! I took this class online, wished I would have taken in the classroom. I made an appointment to receive his help I am so thankful,I actually learned alot. I had to work hard, but he was able to explain it in a way I could understand. I received and A. I would HIGHLY reccomend him and would gladly take him again!
I took his online class, which was extremely easy. He gives you the questions to all the online quizes, and those questions are also the majority of the tests. He also gives you study guides with little anecdotes to help you remember things. Opportunity to get a few extra credit points on each test. He was very helpful as well.
Took this class online. Teacher's expectations are clear and the lectures were enjoyable. If you follow the lectures and do the homework you will have no problem passing this class. He even has a great sense of humor!!
Easy online A. Dr. Horton is a great teacher. He easily answers questions and always make extra credit available. No reason not to make an A in this class.
PLAYED AROUND IN HIS SUMMER 2 CLASS AND STILL MANAGED TO GET A B! JUST DO THE ONLINE HOMEWORK AND THE TESTS AND U ARE SURE TO PASS...
Took this online in the Fall, VERY HARD!! Requires a LOT of memorization. Posts "old exams" and tests are identical in style but numbers changed. Study guides not helpful all. Dropped the class and am taking it in classroom in Spring.
Took this course online. He gives you every opportunity to earn an A. (There really is NO reason not to get an A in this class.) The "lectures" and and Power Point Presentations are interesting and FUN. Dr. Horton is prompt and clear with ALL of his communication. Definitely recommend him for this (and I'm sure any other of his courses.) :D
This man knows his stuff. However, unless you've taken him from Chem 1-Org 2, you're going to have a hard time adjusting to his methods. He's no games. Anything he puts on the board can be on the test and he doesn't give Study Guides, only "old Tests" which have maybe 50% of the material on it at best. Good Professor, just very hard.
Worst teacher I had at IRSC.This was my first chem class and I asked for help multiple times and he was not helpful i felt he was rude& demeaning not to mention the funny looks he gives! Took this online VERY HARD Requires a LOT of memorization. Posts "old exams" and tests are identical in style but numbers changed. Study guides somewhat helpful .
He is VERY rude and he says himself he is not a people person....shouldn't be a teacher if you don't like people. He does nothing to try and make the class interesting and is extremely condescending. He wants you to believe he is tough and be intimidated its ridiculous! I would NEVER take one of his classes again!
Overall he is a good at imparting his knowledge and he is fair. Of course, this is a difficult subject, and you will need to do some serious independent study. Looking forward to taking Organic II with him.
I took this class online; it was set up well and was easy to follow. The class was interesting and it wasn't hard. Though I never met Prof Horton in person, he was always quick to reply to the emails I sent him and he seemed nice enough. His chapter lectures were funny and he offered many chances for extra credit! I'd recommend him for this class!
Ask questions because he welcomes them. He wants to see that you are willing to learn.
Very interesting and straightforward class. Just study his lectures (which are funny and informative), quizzes and vocab. He is quick to respond and very helpful. Definitely recommend!
He just sucks, and I go to UF (Shittiest Professors in the WORLD) so I would know how bad he is. He rarely responds to emails and he loves to go on tangents in lecture. I asked him a question in lab and he explains a step I've already completed and when I said I already did that step he asks why I'm asking him a question.
I took this class online and got an A. You get the quiz questions (multiple choice quizzes) prior to taking the quiz, and the majority of the questions/answers can be found online. He responds to emails fast. In his texts, he asks you basic questions, he does not try to trick you. I went to the ASC lab and reviewed with the tutor during test week
Absolutely loved Dr Horton's online Earth Science class!!! If you do your homework, read his lectures and look up the things he tells you that he wants you to know, you will get a good grade. His clear explanations helped to hold my interest and I almost wish I needed another sciene so I could take him again.
Very Bad Teacher!!!
Dr. Horton is awesome! He is also EXTREMELY helpful.I had him for lab but he gave me an hour of his time to tutor me before final lecture exam.He made everything clear.Follow his notes in lab and review old labs. Easy to make an A in his class. Taking him for chem 2. Many from class are too. He is just that good!
Mr. Horton is a great professor very helpful. I never like science before but he made this class very interesting and fun. Just study the practice test that he puts on "Angel" which by the way he gives the answers to all of them and you'll be fine, got a "B" and I never open the textbbook just study his practice test. Whoo!
Took online. Can tell that prof cares about subject and provides many study materials, powerpoints, lecture notes (with extra credit if you bother to read them!) Loved the book, beautiful color illustrations for many of the topics covered. Almost wished the class was a little more challenging as it was a very interesting class. Recommend.
Great Prof.! Organic Chemistry is a relatively challenging course. Study and work towards the class and your grades should reflect your effort. He is a bit standoffish at first, but he is a nice person at heart. The exam class averages were always in the 40-50's range, I managed to get an "A" both in lab and lecture. I would recommend him!
Took online. With some online classes, you're basically on your own ~ read the book and take tests. Horton has spent alot of time to create simple-term lectures & terrifc p/points which make this class so interesting! I'm not a big science person, but loved this class.
I took this class online during summer I; his lecture notes are the best. 3 test and a final and he drops the lowest TEST grade. Quizzes after every chapter, drops the lowest 2 quizes and he gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. Read lecture notes do preview chapter quizzes and you?ll get an A. I really enjoyed this class -a must take.
Dr. Horton is awesome! He's very passionate about this subject and it's shows through. Took his class online and he gives you all the tools you need to succeed in his class, just need to do the part of studying. Answered emails on the weekend too! Highly recommend.
Dr. Horton is very thorough of what he expects from you. Answers emails even on the weekends. He gives you all the tools you need to succeed. Took him online & he made this transition for me very easy (returned to college after 15 yrs). Thank you Dr. Horton!
Great professor. Easy class. He is very straight forward on the assignments. Extra credit built in. Quizes are open book. Took on-line and he was always very prompt in answering questions. Good sense of humor too.
I had Dr. Horton for lab. He is very straight-forward in his expectations. He is available to help during each lab. Grades fairly. Very dry sense of humor. Seems bored with teaching, but I think he overall enjoys seeing students succeed.
Very knowledgeable and a great lecturer. Class was mainly lectures with a few quizzes thrown in. Textbook use was not essential, but very beneficial for test preparation. This was a very basic course but the instructor made it quite interesting.
Took him online - Fall. Easy class he gives extra credit eveyday. What's expected is in the syllabus. He's nice and answers e-mails fast. I don't like science but he makes it interesting, great teacher!
Very easy class. He doesn't use a lot of powerpoint but he does write on the bored what is going to be on the next test. He doesn't really use the textbook so don't even buy it. He also has a pretty dry sence of humor. Very entertaining.
Took him online. Pretty laid back and easy. Offers extra credit in his lectures if you bother to read them. Study the homework submissions and the lectures because that is what you will be tested on.
I took his class online. His assignments and lecture notes were very clear. I'd recommend the class and him as instructor.
Brilliant man. KNOWS the Organic and KNOWS how to teach it. Easily the most clear and conscise professor I have ever had. He is not easy. His tests are masterpieces and difficult. But if you copy his notes and put a lot of time in you can get A's on them. Most importantly you will leave his class understanding Organic. Good for MCAT prep.
Very good teacher, and very funny guy. Do not miss his class or come in really late though. He drops one of your lowest test grades but if you miss another one there is no making it up and you will get a 0...so make sure you don't miss any tests. If you study you will get an A.
Took class online. Has excellent typed lectures, highlights which sections of the chapter are needed or can be skipped. Doesn't give study guides but you won't need them. Super clear and quite interesting.
Took Horton online for ESC1000 during the summer. Although the class moved very fast, he gives you everything you need to know. The tests are very similar to the homework. Doesn't try to trick you. If you take him online, do your homework and a study and you will ace this class. Great professor. Received an easy A.
This was a great experience! I have waited to take all of my required science as I am not easily interested by these classes. I took ESC1000 because I needed it, I was just hoping to squeak by with a B, but by the end of the second week I was in love, I loved his style, the material used, and everything that I learned.
Chemistry- he does not try to trick his students. He is crystal clear on what we should know for the exams. He has old exams with answers online so we are able to practice problems and review, but studying the notes is perfectly fine. His exams are exactly what is on the notes, and with much studying and practice, everyone should pass. Got an A!
Dr Horton is a TEACHER.He just knows how to teach. He has a way to make complicated subject so down to earth that every student in his class is empowered and felt like genius.
Useless, not helpful, never answers email until the test was already given, no extra study material, and seemed completely uninterested in the online class. We were given homework once a week, 10 questions only, all of which had very little to do with what we were tested on, tests were very tough, only got an A because of Hannah in the ASC lab.
Chemistry can be hard, but Dr. Horton makes it easy to understand. You definitely have to work for the grade you want. He gives online homework assignments, extra credit (show up to class and stay the whole time), and drops the lowest test grade. He is very clear of what he expects, great teacher!
Took online, got an A but worked really hard for it. If you arent self motivated, avoid his online class. Drops lowest exam grade, and gives quizzes each week to help boost grade. Avg exam grades were in the 60s-70s. Exams are tough - but he posts examples from previous years.. study those and his chapter outlines for hints on what to study!
I don't really like Science, but for an online class the layout is very simple. Just do the homework assignments and study for the quizes. Horton has good communication and will work with you. He also gives out extra credit and honestly it's what saved my grade. He gives out good study guides for the quizes.
Just 5 Tests. Nothing Else. Drops 1. Not Very Helpful
Took this class online. I liked the way the class is set up. He gives you old exams to study from which are similar to the exams he gives. Chemistry is not an easy subject though. It's like math combined with elements so don't expect it to be an easy grade. You will have to study. 5 exams lowest dropped about 10 quizzes. Overall great professor
He is very knowledgeable when it comes to chemistry. TAKE GOOD NOTES, and STUDY the vocab. Also do the practice problems that he tells you to do for each chapter. I made note cards to study and studied my notes and ended up doing well. He can seem cocky, and make you feel dumb when you get something wrong, but otherwise he is a good teacher.
Dr. Horton is always there to help and explain concepts, both during and after class. He knows the material better than any other professor. He is not one for small talk, so don't even bother. Just go to class on time, do the work, and you will get the grade you want. You must go to him if something is unclear bc he will assume you are competent.
Took this class online. Although I haven't contacted Professor Horton very many times, when I did call his office number he would always answer and help to answer any questions. He makes his own chapter outlines for what you need to know for the tests, if you go through the outlines and know the material you will pass the tests. DON'T PROCRASTINATE
In retrospect, I should have taken his in person class. Teaching yourself Chemistry is not easy or fun. But the chapter outlines and old tests he posts are excellent resources. As long as you study those and practice with the old tests, you'll be ok. Only complaint would be test scores took FOREVER to be posted. Sucks not knowing where you stand.
Dr. Horton is awesome! He made Chemistry not only easy to understand but also enjoyable. He may come across as strict at first but he really is a sweet guy willing to help anyone who asks. He does in class assignments and you get to work with a group instead of having individual homework. Go to class, do the work, and you will get a good grade.
Professor Horton taught chemistry as if you are already supposed to know everything. He would just say the concept and not thoroughly explain it. He would also work out math problems and just get to the answer without telling us what he did. He grades very harsh and takes off points for any little mistake. He hates when you are late.
Really enjoyed this class. He really engaged with the class and got participation during lectures. He is very clear on what he expects you to know and tests are made from the lecture and homework material. Some graded homework, the rest is do it for yourself. Gives partial credit on exams when you show your work. Dropped one test grade.
Enjoyed this lab. Explained very thoroughly before the experiment what he was looking for. Would answer any questions and his answers were clear and easy to understand. Pay attention and take your time on the labs and you will be fine. If you rush you will make mistakes and it will affect your grade. Final is directly from the lab reports.
He's such a great professor. You don't need a book or code. All of the material he provides through blackboard. Tests are based off quizzes and through his reading material he provides. Read his version before the book version. Extra credit questions and he makes jokes through out. No notes on tests allowed however, you don't need them.
the BEST chem professor you will find at IRSC....
Took online, class was super easy as long as you read the lectures and skim through the text. His written lectures are actually amusing and he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. PAY ATTENTION TO THE QUIZ QUESTIONS!
He comes off as a mean person at first, but he's really not, I enjoyed chemistry lab with him a lot! He goes through every step and you can ask tons of questions and he will answer them. Show up, pay attention, do the math right and youll get 100 on the lab experiments, and exams are exactly lab experiments. STUDY! You do math written problems
Does not grade or respond to emails quickly. Does have extra credit and does drop an exam grade, BUT does not drop the last exam grade. If you take an online class there are 4 exams you have to go to the CAMPUS for which is a pain and the whole reason I take classes online is so I don't have to go to the campus so much. No books/notes for tests.
All the assignments are due on the last day of the semester while the exams are set on specific dates, no study guides or anything to help on exams, everything is graded on the last day, and lectures are kinda helpful, but at least there is extra credit.
The class consists of one discussion board for each module, a quiz for each chapter, one discussion board per module, three exams, and one final exam. No exam reviews but study lecture notes/quizzes (quiz questions can be found on the exam). Extra credit opportunities for answering questions in lecture notes. Easy A as long as everything is done.
Professor Horton is honestly one of the best instructors that Ive met in almost 5 years at IRSC. Hes a little sarcastic, explains his material thoroughly and if you show up to class and do the textbook questions he gives you (not required) youll pass. I feel like I actually retained a lot of what I learned. Overall opinion: take over the summer!
Professor Horton's guidance is incredible for an online course. He provides lecture notes and vocabulary lists for each chapter that provides the actual material that is on the quizzes and exams. The book for the course is easy to understand. Within his lecture notes he provides extra credit questions for points to add to your exam. Recommend!
Prof. Horton is not a good teacher. Do not take him. Not only does he not teach, he has an extremely poor attitude. He gives you no time to prepare by putting in learning material the night before an exam. He doesnt answer emails, and other than tests doesnt show you how your work is being graded. The only good thing is he drops one test grade.
Dr. Horton is honestly a nice guy. Really straight forward for grading. His labs are not too bad, he can come off as not that great at first, but he doesn't you to fail. I do not regret taking him for ORGO 1 and 2 lab, I can recommend taking him, especially going through covid
Great professor. Outlines everything and makes sure that you have everything you need to study for the final exam. Just do the work and youll be fine.
Attending lectures isn't mandatory, but is highly suggested to take them as it provides valuable information and even explains what may be on the exams. He provides videos before every exam to show us a recap of the chapters we went over. It sometimes a little scary to ask him for help because he would sound tired of repeating but he's a nice guy!
I liked Dr. Horton. When a student misses his class he shows genuine concern and allows you to make up labs. He makes you do a lab book which is quite time consuming but hes an easy grader. He likes to get down to business though so I wouldnt suggest coming late to class. Awesome teacher though I highly suggest you take him!
Dr. Horton gives meaningful lectures. Attendance is not mandatory, but I would recommend going because his tests come straight from the lectures. If you email him, he will answer your questions and do his best to help you. He can come off a little annoyed at students sometimes, but overall he is a great prof.
Honestly one of the easiest classes I've ever taken! Assignments are super simple, just make sure they are done on time. Professor lets you work ahead of schedule and made this class stress free. If you just use the study material for the quizzes and exams and turn everything in on time there's no way to receive lower than an A. Take this course!!
Dr. Horton makes a hard subject like Chem 2 totally manageable and truly wants us all to get an A. Our only assignments for the week were short pre lab quizzes, a post lab quiz to take at home with 2 attempts, and the lab itself which is an easy A. We only had 2 paper exams, the midterm and final which weren't too bad. He is an awesome professor!
Dr. Horton is one of the best chemistry professors IRSC has. I have taken a few of his chem lectures and labs and he has been the only professor (I have had other chem professors) that makes concepts clear and easy to understand. Coming from someone who struggled with chemistry, take him, you won't regret it!
Dr. Horton is the best lab professor ever! He makes it clear as to what is expected from you and organizes the course very well. The midterm and final are the only major grades, and as long as you study the study guides he puts out in advance you should do just fine. He has been in the game for a while and really knows chemistry better than anyone.
Really great person! Overall just have to show up to class and have an understanding of the lab you need to do that day. He does give pre lab quizzes before lab days and the final and midterm are the only real tests you need to study for! Dr Horton is super funny and really makes class enjoyable. Also need to keep a lab notebook for the class.
...Am I missing something? I found his lab lecture to be a bit of a headache. The instructions given by him verbally were confusing at times, and he didn't seem like he wanted to be there. I also hated the time. If at all possible, he should adjust them to be earlier in the day. Staying until 9:00PM is not for me. At least his grading is lenient.
His lectures are great, Just do your studying with the assigned chapters and homework. He can grumpy at you and you can feel that he does not want to be there sometimes, but he is a great guy. Makes jokes and makes chemistry interesting. Just do your studying and you'll be fine. This class is very test heavy. Attend to every lecture to pass.
Gave a few boring lectures, but information was helpful. He's a nice guy but sometimes gets annoyed at students. Each day we would come in and immediately take a pretest, perform an experiment, then take a post test at home. He pretty much grades the experiments by completion. The midterm and final were straight out of the experiments.
His lectures were mandatory, if you are a physical rather than a verbal learner then this Professor is not it. If you do not attend every class then you are lost on the subject. He moves through lessons really fast. If you are going to take this print out the worksheets to work on it at Home.
If you are unsure which professor to take for Chemistry 1 or 2 lab, TAKE THIS MAN! I have had the pleasure of having him as a professor for both labs. He explains concepts clearly, is attentive, and truly cares for students and their success in his course. He makes students feel appreciated and is a great man, not to mention he is hilarious!
Professor Horton was not that great. His exams were always fill in the blank so if you had no clue about a question... it's automatically wrong. Your entire grade is based on exams except for a small portion of homework.
Definitely the easiest class I have ever taken. Go to class to take notes because he doesn't post them online. Do the practice problems in the book to study and that's all you need. During Summer A he does one test a week so it is a-lot.
He doesn't give enough examples or explain what is on the test. Mostly self studying to do well on a test, but the MC questions aren't even what was learned. No matter how much you study, the test will never dictate how much you learned in class. This class was stressful and I dread coming every day. Chem should be fun and I didnt learn anything.
He should give extra credit, so many of us are not understanding and failing. We try to study and do well, but he gives tests that dont correlate to what he is teaching. He goes over the basis of a topic and never in depth. It is frusturating trying to understand when he is also a bit grumpy. We are scared to ask questions.Wish there were more EC.
I never thought I would dislike a class so much. This class was beyond stressful, I was ill advised on most material. Having the professor assistant explain most things was grueling for not only the class, but her as well. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone unless they want to be nearly stressed to death!!!
He was a boring professor. The work was easy, and the labs were fun but his lectures before actually doing the labs were very boring. Sometimes he seemed like he didn't even want to be there. There are pre and post lab quizzes every week. I highly suggest you look at the materials provided before the class to pass the pre quiz. Everyone can pass.
Professor Horton overall was an ok professor. He would get very annoyed at students if they did not understand the first time and asked to re-explain. If you like to know what you scored on exams, he takes 1-2 weeks to grade exams. He doesn't seem like he wants to be there and teach. Overall, I would recommend taking a different professor.
Not bad at all. He can seem demotivated and annoyed at times, but his lectures are clear and detailed. The key to doing well on tests is to pay attention to lectures and take good notes. I personally never had any difficulties with this class.
He went off topic a lot. He barley went over the basics. You will need a tutor. See him during office hours. He teaches but like not to a well understanding. He is a good person, but u can tell he doesnt want to be there. Chem was hard, four tests, one final. The homework helped boost up my grade, due at the end of the semester. Good luck
The professor is clearly very knowledgable and an expert in chemistry. He is not a very friendly guy, but tests are clear and exactly what he teaches. Use your notes and study you will pass. 4 exams 1 drop, final exam.
Like everyone else has said, Horton is a great dude when hes not teaching. He is very good at what he does, but be prepare to teach yourself, never have i had a horrible lecturer as Horton. Very strict on showing work, don't do it his way? yeah good luck passing his class.
Dr Horton is by far my favorite professor!I took him for GenChem 2 with lab and Orgo1 lab, and Id have taken more if I could. He's passionate about topics he enjoys but may rush boring ones.ASK QUESTIONS—he's patient and ensures you understand, especially in office hours.Gruff at first but kind, I changed to chem major bc of him.I miss his classes!
He is old fashioned and doesn't grade anything in time, explains terribly and no extra credit, when you ask what you can do to study “go online”. Or use “google”. He writes very small on board and I wear glasses and I still can't see. Goes over 1 problem and doesn't work it out solves it and moves on. I highly don't suggest him.
I first had him for chm1lab and he was very patient and ensured that you understand the material. I took him again for chm2lecture and I'd agree that he does rush through lessons he doesn't deem significant. He was enthusiastic about the topics he taught and provokes engagement. He does offer additional help and answers questions in class.
Chem can be tough, but the lectures are worth attending. Refer to the textbook and do the practice problems. unstuck AI is a great study tool alongside other resources. Overall, Horton makes the class engaging despite being a bit grumpy at times.
Prelab quizzes were okay, post lab quizzes reflected what we learned in the lab. You can't make a mistake during the lab because it will affect your lab grade, and he seems to get annoyed. Both midterm and final were open response, and not multiple choice but was not hard if you review the labs.
Prof. Horton is very Knowledgable, but he is a tough grader. I had him for chem 1 lecture summer A and I had to really work for my B. He goes over subjects really fast, and he will only give an example or two and moves on. His tests are mainly short response and he does not give study guides. attendance is important, as he does not give handouts.
I took Dr. Horton for both Gen Chem 1 and Gen Chem 2 back in the summer of 2023, so I had him back to back, six weeks each. Chemistry is a brutal course and it is not easy. However, I learned an extreme amount underneath him and many of these reviews are not fair. He's a great professor. Go to class and ask questions, I promise you'll be fine.
Professor Horton is very savvy when it comes to chemistry. Tests were everything taught in class, so make sure you take notes. I would say he is not the most approachable person, and sometimes he seemed like he didn't want to be there. Besides that, he is the best chemistry professor in IRSC, so take his class if you need the requirement.
Attendance is very important as his test are pretty much from his lectures, so be sure to take notes. He also did a ungraded pop quiz before every test which gave you a little bit of an idea what could be on the tests. I also felt like I did learn a lot from his lectures too, he rambles on sometimes and loves to talk with students.
Great professor, make sure you take notes! Test are note-based so make sure you write everything. Attendance isn't necessary, but def recommended, missing one class gets you behind quick.
