I took the RM class from him. It was very interesting. He is a very good instructor because he is so passionate about what he's teaching and you can feel the spirit. I highly recommend this class if you are searching for a spiritually uplifting class.
he'll make you think and so if you're close-minded then you'll probably hate the class But if you're not then you'll love this class. Makes you think and always brings the spirit. interesting and incredibly nice
Bro. Hoskisson is a great professor. He brings some great insights into the class and is very good at getting other students excited to learn about the Book of Mormon. I recommend him to anyone.
Great Professor. If you're looking for an easy slide by class with little work, this isn't the class for you. But, if you're looking for an uplifting class, with great insights, and a very helpful professor, this is a great class.
This professor's teaching style is very tedious. He doesn't give satisfying answers to your questions, but instead baits you until you come up with half an answer. I gained nothing from lecture, but still had to attend in order to take daily quizzes.
Amazing teacher - plenty of insights. Knows just when to include the spiritual. Maintains university-level intellect in class. He expects a lot from you, but you come out of the course with sure knowledge.
He is a neat guy but he is very hard! The subjects that he brings up sometimes are conterversial. The tests are okay if you study hard. And if you like having to be very specific on tests and quizes you'll like him.
The class is great. He always brings in the spirit to his classes. Has awesome insights. I really enjoyed the class.
I found his stories interesting but I don't like the idea of being tested on his opinions. I don't find his method of teaching very effective at times (the baiting) but he is a wonderful person who cares about his students.
His class is a monster! Daily quizzes, four 400 point exams, and not very uplifting lectures. I would completely recommend against taking his class. The difficulty of the course detracted from the positive experience that a religious course should be. He also speculates like crazy!Pick someone else.
The class was great!!! He really knows what he's teaching and explains how you can better put your life in line with God's will by applying Biblical teachings as they are meant to be applied. If you don't like the truth, don't take his class. If you do, you'll love it!!!
HIS DEMEANOR WAS VERY UNBECOMING OF A BYU RELIGION PROFESSOR! He's critical of students comments and is arrogant in his teaching. He speculates a lot and presents his personal views and ideas as church doctrine and then tests you on his own ideas. He’s sarcastic and is demeaning.
Some people found his class easy. I thought the tests were difficult to answer correctly.
Although he often introduced personal opinion into the class, he made it very clear when he was.
Bro. Hoskisson is great. His tests are long and kind of hard, but he gives study guides to help you out. I love all of his insights, and he's very knowledgeable about the gospels. I learned a great deal, and would highly recommend him!
This guy is great and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. Yes, it is true, his tests were not the easiest but what matters is that he brought the spirit into every single class. There were quizzes but if you did your reading you were guarranteed an A on them. I learned a lot in this class :)
Either you will love him or you won't. The trick to his class is figuring out how he quizes/ tests you. If you do that and study accordingly it's easy to get an A (trust me, I took him for both NT 1 and 2!) But I liked that he made me think and reflect a lot! He may be sarcastic but he's not unkind
He is tough in the sense that he expects you to pick out the fine details in the scriptures, but he is a powerful teacher and his specificity makes you think more when you read rather than just skim the scriptures. Great Teacher!
He speculates beyond belief and his class is so boring. His exams are very difficult and he asks about his random stories from class. DON'T take his class. It will make you hate religion classes. I have never disliked a class so much. Some people like it, but only those who like speculation.
I learned quite a bit in his class. If you want to get an A in the class you just have to study the guides before the test, and the maps. I liked him because I didn't have to write any papers. Just do well on the first 3 exams and you don't have to take the final.
This was a very interesting class. He is very detail oriented, which shows up in his quizzes and tests, but you always know what is going to be on them. He gives a lot of cultural and literary insights, which I loved. He also makes sure to differentiate between doctrine and his own opinions.
Very contentious -- seemed to like teaching false doctrine perhaps to create class arguments. Was told he was hired because he is an expert in Hebrew. Should not be teaching religion.
This class is really hard and his lectures have nothing to do with the tests most of the time. Avoid this teacher at all causes. I agree with what was stated below, it will make you hate religion classes. Just a lot of specualtion and he claims that grades are important, yet his class is killer if you don't read every nit picky detail!
Great professor with a big heart, but does not let this extend to grades. Posts lecture notes with possible test/quiz questions. Four exams (drops lowest score), no papers, easy quiz before each lecture. Effort required for an A, but worth it. I've taken two courses from him.
Enjoyed his class. He has a testimony, but has ideas and thoughts of his own rather than blind faith to back his beliefs. His quizzes sometimes had random details, but if you actually did the reading (which was admittedly a bit much at times) then you were fine. Study guides for test, read for quizzes, and you'll get an A unless you're an idiot.
He always made sure to distinguish between his own thoughts and opinions and what has been taught by the Brethren. Tough tests, but if you study them closely then you have no problem. His lecture notes were invaluable. I will probably take another class from him. It was eye opening. He wanted to make us think.
He is very fair and not an annoying BYU religion professor. I have had a lot worse than him. He prepares well, gives you an amazing study guide and his tests are very fair, if not easy.
Awesome teacher. Best religion class I took at BYU hands down. I wish I'd taken more from him. I learned a great deal and thought that the grading and tests were fair.
He teaches his own opinions as doctrine. Everything else is wrong. In the open answer tests and quizes which are ridiculously hard, only his opinion is the right answer no matter if could support it with arguement and scripture or not.
If you're bigotted and can't stand democrats, don't take his class. He has a strong testimony of and love for the scriptures. If you do your reading and study the reviews, you'll get a good grade.
Class is difficult because you are expected to notice the details from the reading. His "outiside readings" are excellent. He will help you with it and let you turn it in multiple times. Tests are hard, but if you study the posted guide you'll do well. An A requires effort, but it's college and an honors class, not seminary.
I absolutly loved this teacher. He /never/ tests on things that he didn't get to in class. He doesn't expect you to read his mind. All of the questions he asks are from the study guide. If you study, read the assignments, it is impossible to fail. He wants all of his kids to pass. Don't worry about the quizes, he drops low scores.
Bro. H will help you rethink how you approach the BoM. You'll pay more attention to detail and to what the scriptures really say. The reading seemed like a little much at first, but it was very manageable and quite enjoyable. He tests exactly what he teaches. I'd definitely take another class from him.
I'm still amazed at just how much Brother Hoskisson knows--he's an incredible man and I'm so glad I got to take his class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! YOU WILL REGRET IT! HE IS JUST FULL OF HIMSELF. HE TEAHCES DOGMAS. HE IS RUDE TO HIS STUDENTS, THEY ARE WRONG NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY EVEN WHEN ITS RIGHT
Great class. Made me love religion classes. Study the study guide and your notes and you should ace it no problem. As far as the comments about his speculating goes, I worked for him for 2 years and I guarantee he can back up what he says in class. He does a good job in class distinguishing between his opinion and Church doctrine.
Very knowledgeable and great lesson plans.
Avoid him like the plague. He expects you to read his mind. That is his favorite game. He tests on class discussions we never had. He is ridiculously nit picky on quiz answers. He believes he is right more than the Book of Mormon manual which was written by Prophets and Apostles. If you do not have a strong testimony, you will not survive his class
I love Prof. Hoskisson. I was always excited for his lectures and they really make you stretch and think. His tests are difficult but if you study his study guides you will ace them with no problem, (I did). He sincerely cares about student progress and sends out emails asking how he can better help. Great guy and great teacher.
I hate whiners. Those who do not like this class are such. Hoskisson's classes are challenging, but he is very careful to clarify what HIS interpretations are (he will switch lecture positions to emphasize that it is his own opinion) and what the Brethren have said. I took NT 211 and OT 302 from him and his passion for teaching was evident! A+++
Professor Hoskisson is alright, but I wouldn't recommend him. He has a testimony and all, but seems to get to doctrine after wading through lots of argument and condescending statements. Just a bit too much speculation, that's all. I got an A, but it was only because I could remember random facts. Very detail-oriented, rather than doctrinal.
I had a love hate relationship with the class, but even now I still refer to things I learned from him in class so I guess he really did change my life. Alot of outside reading, tests are kind of hard, but easy to BS. The quizzes on the reading are like your attendance. He even sheds tears once in awhile to let you know he's human.
I loved this class! He is picky about his answers, but he specifies his standards beforehand and as long as you pay attention you'll be fine. He does give his own opinion on things but he states specifically that it's his own opinion and not doctrine. Highly recommended!
At first, I really did not like the class. It seemed like we were learnng stupid things that were not going to help me better understand the gospel. I learned however that the gospel has many different points of views and that it is healthy spiritually to see them all. I apply the teachings day and more. May not be for you, must have open mind.
Liked just about everything about th class. I feel like I learned a lot and gained a lot of new insights into the life of Christ and my responsibilities as a Christian. A challenging professor who will tell you if you're wrong and set you straight.
People need to remember that religion classes at BYU do not equal seminary. So yes it's a challenging class but it is weel worth it. If you put the time in, you'll get an A. His tests are fair and you have been well exposed to everything on them before hand. Plus if you do well you don't have to take the final. I would definitely recommend Bro H!!
This is a good professor if you don't mind some ambiguous comments and very detailed questions on quizzes. Quizzes are everyday and as mentioned are quite detailed--but he makes up for it with attendance/pity points. Tests are also very long and detailed, but can be easily passed by using the study guides he creates.
Brother H. is very knowledgeable and a good professor. He asks a lot of questions and likes to generate discussion. Sometimes he shoots down others ideas a little quick when they don't coincide with his, but he usually explains his position well. I would take his class again
I really liked this class. We had quizzes every day and the tests are kind of tough but if you use the lesson outlines he gives you they really aren't that bad. His New Testament class was excellent.
I gave Prof. H's class the highest difficulty rating as an incentive for bright, driven students who are looking for a bright, driven religion teacher. H doesn't cower in an ivory tower; he understands students and teaches accordingly. This class will challenge you, but ultimately improve you. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Those that would enjoy the class have to be open minded and ready to work at learning, if you do not care to do the reading and then think beyond it don't bother wasting seats in his class. The way he teaches will make you think and help you see different points of view. He has an opinion, and he wants you to have one too. Well worth the time.
Bro. Hoskisson's class was one of my favorite religion classes! He always brought the spirit into class...I loved it! Daily quizzes are very helpful and not graded that harshly. You do need to study although he gives you a study guide. Attend class! I never missed, not only did it help on the test, but it was a place I could feel the spirit.
Professor H is an excellent teacher and very spiritual, he just takes some getting used to. The first week is very rough. The student has the responsibility to read the scriptures and text carefully before each lecture. If you do this, the class will be easy and rewarding and you will have no trouble getting an A. Reading takes from 20-60 mins.
Bro. H gives an amazing class. i really wasnt excited for the class, but he does such a good job of explaining and expounding on the scriptures and brings the spirit every time. attendance is manditory if you wanna do well on the tests, but he does give a review for each one. i strongly recommend it!
He expects you to do all of the reading, and tests you on details that you probably have never noticed before, but he is very interesting and really cares about the students. He tells you 90% of the questions that will be on the exam, so if you study, you should always get an A.
I loved this class. The first week is rough, because you need to adjust to his style of thinking, but after that it is pretty easy. he is also super helpful when it comes to your grade. You'll think you are doing worse than you are Also, go talk to him about your test after, and he will nearly always raise your score. Very spiritual, and very carin
Professor Hoskisson was a terrible teacher. His lectures were confusing and disjointed. His tests were incredibly hard-it was like guessing what he was thinking! He often contradicted the manual and spoke to students in a derogatory manner. I got an A- but I still would not suggest this class to anyone--he is awful!
Prof. Hoskisson is the best religion professor I've had. Very sincere lectures and nothing offensive. Grades are a bit tougher, but fair.
Professor Hoskisson is fairly good. His tests are hard, but I didn't like the class discussion much. There were too many condescending statements. He also made me wonder about the things that I know are true - are they really revelation? I didn't like the constant bickering about true doctrine.
I thoroughly enjoyed the class. Hard but fair. It was Akkadian.
I tried hard not to but I fell asleep in class everyday. I know there are a lot of great New Testament classes at BYU. I feel like I missed out on that experience. He's a kind man, I just had a hard time enjoying the class.
class is very straight forward. some religion prof's quiz you on Nephi's uncle's dog's first owner...and other irrelevant things. he seriously helps you develop critical thinking skills. he debunks a lot of mormon myths. brilliant man. unreal ability to bring the spirit. great study guides. most said phrase in class: "well the church is true" =D
One of the worst religion classes I've ever taken. Unless you memorize everything you ever read you'll be lost. You have to be able to read his mind, he's so needlessly specific. Tests are ridiculous. Seems like he also likes to be controversial and preaches things I've NEVER heard anywhere else in church that direct contradict established doctrine
Hoskisson, Loves what he does, and sincerely wants to help you do well. The tests are all from his lectures that he posts and if you take notes every class period then you HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS took him 2 semesters got A's both times. If you're happy with your grade after the last midterm you DON'T have to take the final. good class.
I love Professor Hoskisson. I took both halves of the NT from him. Warning (as he will warn): 2nd half of the NT is harder. This isn't him, its the material. He's funny, intelligent, and helpful. Always positive and happy. Grading is simple, straight forward. I recommend him w/o reservation. Prof Hoskisson, haters will hate but you, sir, are great.
Prof. Hoskisson is the bomb diggity (awesome)! He is a great teacher! His class requires effort. However,a good grade is definitely achievable! I took the of the Accounting Jr. Core at the same time, and I still got an A in his class. The key is to do well on the first three midterms so you don't have to take the final because he drops one exam.
I loved this class. His sense of humor is very blunt but elicits laughs from the entire class on a regular basis. He is very spiritual and incredibly knowledgeable about the gospel. He also will answer any question you ask at any time. Couldn't ask for a better teacher.
Very knowledgeable professor. Take him if you want a more in depth, symbolic, and historical look into the scriptures. I looked forward to every class, as well as stressed over every test. Quiz at the beginning of each class, no homework besides reading, and tests consist of matching and free response. Loved him.
I loved taking Book of Mormon from Brother Hoskisson. I always looked forward to going to class. The outside readings were interesting. He grades you on your best work which is nice. He loves the scriptures and the gospel.
Brother Hoskisson is an amazing teacher. He knows how to teach VERY well. He is the best mentor in the gospel I have ever had.
Brother Hoskisson is a great teacher. He is helpful and helps you think more about actual doctrine. You take notes of what you are feeling and learning from the spirit, not the lecture.Quizzes are easy; they are about the readings. Tests are easy because he gives you all the questions to study beforehand. A definite class to take.Put work in-bingo!
Brother Hoskisson taught my PoGP class. He is incredibly knowledgeable and full of information. He studied ancient scripture so he describes what was going on at the time the PoGP was written. The tests can be difficult and I would not say it is an easy class, but it was worth every penny. I learned a ton and have so much respect for him.
Bro. Hoskisson's class is hard. Quiz at the beginning of class, even if you read all the material, it's doubtful you'll do well. He adds extra points to the quiz for attendence, so even if you miss most (like I often do), you can still get a 7 ish out of 10. The tests are ok if you do the study guide, but they're like 500 questions(no joke-25pgs)
Brother Hoskisson is awesome. I have never had a teacher care so much about his students, he always welcomes you to talk to him. It is true that there's a lot of material to study for tests, but the test format makes it easy to get a good grade. He lets you cross of a certain number of questions that you don't know the answers to.
Bro. Hoskisson is kind, humble, and helpful. Go visit him during his office hours and make his day. HW for each class consists of 1 ch from the Student Manual, 4-7 chapters from the BOM, and 1 article from a scholar or apostle. Test answers are verbatim from the readings. Get a study group (he encourages it), do the study guide, and ace the test.
Brother Hoskisson is a wonderful and caring teacher. I always felt welcomed in the classroom. I learned a great deal from his lectures and outside readings. The amount of reading may be large but the tests are pretty straight forward, and he gives great study guides.
I came in with no expectations and this ended up being my favorite class of the semester. Professor Hoskisson loves all his students and wants them to do well. The coursework takes a lot of time, but you learn so much and the class discussions are so interesting that it is well worth it. Plus, the tests are straight off the study guide!
Brother Hoskisson really cares about his students, but his teaching style is difficult. He gives you quizzes for every class over the reading (he gives you (an) outside article(s), student manual, and reading in the book of mormon). The tests are doable. He gives you 20-50 review questions per lesson. He looks for very specific answers.
Lots of reading - every class there will be a quiz over BoM chapters, the student manual and then an outside reading. Tests cover class discussion and questions from provided study guides. Bro. Hoskisson is so sweet, and you can tell he really loves the BoM and his students, and he's always willing to help. Definitely put in effort for an A though.
Loved this class! There are lots of reading but they are great! If you read everything and study you can get a good grade. The class was spiritually uplifting and full of good information. Bro. Hoskisson loves his students, he is really kind and helpful.
This was such a hard religion class. He requires that you basically memorize the readings and he is pointlessly specific in his test questions. He also speculates most of the time, which can get tiring. With that being said, I learned SO much!
Great teacher. The class isn't easy. You really need to make an effort. Read the manual and the articles he sends you. He is a great son of God. He has the spirit when he teaches inside and outside of the class. He worries for you and tries to help you the better he can.
He taught the doctrine of the gospel well and his classes were interesting. But I felt as if you were really on your own for the tests.
I took 121 from Bro Hoskisson and left a not so positive review. Second semester I felt I should try again. I know he's retired now, so there's no reason to review, but he was great. He loves the gospel and loves his students. He was more than helpful and kind and understanding. I would have loved to take all my religion classes from him.
