He was a great teacher! A lot of kids find his class hard, but its not because of him; its the material. He is very helpful and understanding. If you have a question ask! He was great!
A good teacher. If you dont know calc very well dont take his class. I suggest the pre calc or something else like it.
I absolutely loved his class, I took his 113 class the next semester. He's willing to help you at out as much as you need. He's a tease, so if you don't mind being teased when getting help then you'll do fine. He gives grades for homework, quizzes, and tests. Do the homework and try to understand it and you'll do well on the rest!
He really likes doing things in the activity book. Didn't really explain concepts that well.
He does a lot from the Activity book! I really loved that. A great class for those who like hands on and visual! I loved it!
wonderful teacher. occationally had trouble getting finished with all lecture material for the day. just go to his office during office hours and he will be more than happy to help.
Not to impressed in his teaching. Seems like a good guy, but was not impressed when going through the syllabus and it stated not to ask questions. Was not impressed with this at all.
I loved his class. He taught in a way that made understanding why we do the things we do make sense, shere it's not just sticking numbers into an equation.
Brother Johansen is a nice guy but....He would skip over important steps that we needed to see in order to understand the problems. Other students were confused by what he was doing sometimes. It was frustrating. I would not recommend him to any of my friends.Take Brother Saunders!
I am super super bad at math, but he really tried to present concepts in an understandable way. roll not taken, but go or else you will get behind! character development collected at the end is worth MORE THAN YOU THINK. I liked it... as long as you study, keep up with quizzes, and laugh at his jokes.:)
If you want an easier teacher, that him for 306, but I didn't learn as much as i did with a different teacher in 305. TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT AN A
Brother Johanson was one of the worst teachers I have ever had in my life. I knew more walking in the class than I do walking out. He doesn't actually teach anything, he makes students get up and teach even if they don't know what they are doingor if anyone else in the class knows what they are doing. Anticipatory sets are so dumb.
he does not teach lessons well and expects you to already know everything before being taught how to do it...so frustrating and he also likes to embarass people in front of the class and makes you come to the board even if you don't know how to do the problem, i am sure he is a wonderful person as an individual just not a good teacher
His class was somewhat difficult, but its college. However, its a difficult where you learn what is being taught. There is a lot of homework, but its necessary to understand the concepts. He calls on people to do problems on the board whether you know how to do it or not. Overall I liked him as a professor.
I thought he did a really good job of teaching. He taught a lot of why things are the way they are not so much how to do them. If you do the work and keep up you will do great.
I loved his class and anytime I needed help I just had to go to his office and he was very happy to help me. He really cared about the students and there lives. I had a problem and he was willing to help me with anything. He sometimes ran out of time in class and have to read the rest but if went to his office he was more then happy to help!
He is one of the better teachers on campus. Some of the other comments have not taken into account the BYU-Idaho learning model. He has other students explain to students because that is the BEST way to learn. But he really knows his stuff. If you really want to learn the stuff then take this class. He is also very fair with grades!
The organization of the class is a little hard to get used to, but he is an excellent teacher. He explains concepts very well. He is very understanding and is always wanting to help. Very straight forward on his testing he doesn't try to trick you, and its not real hard. Good class, good teacher.
Is an excellent teacher! Tests were very fair. Class was fun, not just boring lecture. Good hands on learning.
Very understanding and will help you out where he can. The activities that we do in class are fun. Most of the class is taught by you since it is an education class.
I learn really well from his teaching style. Be careful if you're not listening in class, if he has to repeat himself he can be a little testy.
He's a great teacher. I had him for CalcII and I loved the class. He is understanding and teaches clearly. Probably my favorite math teacher here and I'm a math major!
Brother Johanson is a great teacher. He's super straightforward. He explains concepts and formulas so you can figure them out for yourself if you were ever to forget them (or so you can explain them to students if you're going to be a math teacher). Fantastic teacher, I would highly recommend taking classes from him.
Brother Johanson was a great teacher. Although the organization of the class is difficult to get used to, all in all the class is very passable. As long as you do homework and ask questions when you don't understand, you will do fine. Also, he gives you a study guide for the tests that are just like the actual tests. He is very understanding.
Love Bro. Johanson! He is such an amazing teacher. He loves math and knows exactly what he's talking about. He will teach you such simple ways to figure out problems it's awesome. His office door is always open and he will help you in any way he can. Very understanding. Take this class from him!!
Most homework I have ever had for such a low lever class. He misses class very often and has nervous substitutes fill in. Abuses the learning model. No textbook for reference. Everything is online and very confusing. Nice guy, terrible class.
Very helpful. Math at BYUI is going downhill, however. All the Math110 classes are abusing the learning model. No book is used & there are VERY minimal tutors for this class. Bro J. is great at teaching but won't just tell you how, he makes you look for it yourself first and it can be FRUSTRATING.
LOVE HIM. I took calculus before in highschool and I never really understood what I was doing until taking his class. He's very clear, takes time to help, and makes good connections so that you don't need to use formulas. He's also just a great guy. I'm taking him for calc 2 for sure
He's the best Math teacher ever. Explains complex math so easy a child could understand. He won't tell you to drop. So you have to know for yourself if you're in over your head. If you put in the hours(30 per wk)you will survive. If you don't do the homework you will fail. Take this class from Johanson for sure, but only if you have to time to dona
Great teacher, good class! Very manageable, but make sure you do the homework and the tests aren't too bad.
Most of the work is online and there is a TON of it! He assigns homework and then he just answers questions. He doesn't teach. He is a great person and extremely nice but just is not a very good teacher.
The course is a department made course that he has to teach and therefore you need no textbook because it's all online. Once you understand how the homework is set up it is pretty easy. You discover the math principles for yourself. He is helpful but you have to think (sorry) and you can go to him with questions even during your take exam.
Not the greatest teacher. It was more teaching myself how to do everything. Tons of "busy work". If you enjoy being bored take him.
If you don't need a teacher to explain anything to you, this is the teacher to have.
If you enjoy being yelled at for an hour every day then take him. He is passionate but I absolutely hate starting off every day getting yelled at for an hour. Totally depends on his notes and struggles with adapted problems. He does teach principles fairly well and is pretty nice with grading partial credit.
He's a good guy,his class is lively and fun. He's fairly lenient with assignments and cares about his students. I'd recommend him but I did struggle through his class.
Very sarcastic man - I found him very humorous. I think that he really wanted to help us learn the material and to really understand it. The class is hard but I owe that to the fact that it's Calculus 2.
Attendance is not mandatory for your grade, but it is mandatory for your benefit of learning the material. As far as the teacher, he can be very sarcastic and rude when students ask questions. I was always afraid of asking something, for fear of he might shoot it down like a stupid question. He does do a good job of teaching the material though.
Bro Johanson is an awesome professor! I loved the class. He's very loud and emphatic but that helps in Calc. He spent a lot of time with the students up doing board work so that we can teach each other.
This is a horrible class given by a horrible man. He scares his students from contributing by mocking their questions. He is not very helpful at all. So glad I am done with this class.
I really liked Bro. Johanson. He has a genuine interest in helping his students succeed if you are willing to put in the work. The class was interesting. However, he doesn't have much patience if you are stupid. (There were some genuinely stupid people in my class)
He is a great professor. Realize that the standard is the same in this class as in any other at BYUI, preparation is required beforehand, come prepared to teach, not to be taught. He has a good sense of sarcasm which he acquired growing up in a large family, but he is not harmful. If you do your part, you will do well and he is there to help.
Brother Johanson is pretty good. He has a tendency to only teach the short cut ways of doing math, which kinda bothers me. Other than that, he is willing to help explain things and does great. He is loud, but don't let that scare you. He really does care, and he does a great job of integrating some spiritual moments into class!
Brother Johanson is completely hilarious. Starting off the semester he can come off as rude and blunt. And he is blunt, but if you can take constructive criticism his comments will help you learn, remember, and excel. During office hours he is more than willing to help. He teaches by taking what you can do on your own and expounding from there.
Brother Johanson is just swell. At first I was kind of freaked out in his class; he's blunt isn't shy about pointing out a lack of understanding. Which ends up being a good thing. I would recommend seeing him in his office hours. He's hilarious and very willing to spend time with students. My only complaint is that his tests are incredibly easy.
I loved his class and was super grateful that he was so willing to help me when I didn't understand things. If it has been a while since you have taken a math class don't be afraid to take his class. He really will help you succeed.
Great teacher, always makes sure everyone understands before moving on. Gives pre-assignments due before class to gage where we are at in order to fine tune his lesson. Normal homework load. Super fun, he loves teaching and cares.
He's by far the best math teacher I have ever had! He is so good at teaching it in a way that is understandable and easy. Most people fail the class because they fall behind since there is a 2-5 hour hw due every day depending on how fast you are. That is consistent with most 112 teachers though. Take 12 credits if your're slow at math.
Don't be deterred by his apparent harshness! He can seem like he's really mad at times when really he isn't. So, just realize that, letting the perhaps less-than-kind words go, and you'll see him for the genius, expert teacher he really is. He knows the calculus backwards and forwards. He'll really push you, but it's so worth it.
Brother Johanson was an awesome Calculus teacher. I was very impressed with the preparation of each day and how easily he explained it. He was also very fair on grading and isn't out to fail anyone just because. If you work hard, take good notes, and ask a lot of questions, you'll do well.
Brother Johanson is by far the best teacher I have ever had! Be sure to attend class though. It isn't mandatory, but you can fall behind fast if you don't. He does yell, but it is because he is passionate about his subject and wants us to get it. However, his love trumps the yelling every time. He really does care and wants you to succeed.
He is a great teacher. The class has a lot of curriculum so be prepared to do a lot of homework. But it is homework for the sake of learning. He also gives take home quizzes that aren't too difficult. The tests are gonna require effort so make sure to study before hand. He also doesn't grade on attendance, but he will be concerned if you skip.
Lots of Homework, but he is a good funny teacher that goes at the pace of the class, he seeks to answer each student's question.
I learned so many ways to better explain math concepts. This was a one credit class, but I learned many strategies and had great tutoring experiences.
Excellent choice for calculus 2. Teaches the concepts and procedures in lay-man's terms. Homework is slightly heavy but graded on completion as well as preparation work. He has a sarcastic and teasing sense of humor, so don't take offense too easily.
He definitely knows his stuff. He may come across as harsh and mean, but in reality he is just sarcastic and passionate about what he teaches. Assignments are graded on completion, so really it's on you to make sure you know the material. Other than that, there are prep quizzes, in class/take-home quizzes and tests. Make sure to check your work!
Brother Johanson is amazing. He grades you mostly on your work, so if you make one little mistake and get the wrong answer, you still have a chance to get most of the points. He explains calculus in a way that makes sense and he is truly one of the best math teachers on campus. Beware his sarcasm though; he likes to joke around.
He may seem bold and loud but he really just cares about all his students passing and understanding. He will take time out of class to answer questions. His teaching style is to teach the conceptual stuff and get you to understand what you are doing, and then teaches the short cuts.
His class isn't too hard at all. He teaches in the way that everybody can understand. Great teacher.
Phenomenal teacher! Very passionate about the material. He really wants you to succeed if you are willing to try. He is blunt, so expect it. He is also very willing to work with you at the beginning of the semester if it has been a long time since you took math (I had a 3 yr break between this and AP Calculus)
Brother Johanson is an ah-mazing teacher! He breaks things down so that it's easy to understand. He has pep assignments to help you come to class prepared to learn. he is really willing to help you outside of class. Just beware, Math113 is NOT an easy class! Even with a tutor, I got a C. Good luck! Don't be afraid to approach him
My favorite math teacher. I had him for both 112 and 113. He truly knows what he's talking about. If you miss even one day, though you'll struggle a lot. His lectures really make all the difference. Very willing to help out of class and understands life happens. He does have a temper though, he's made a few people feel dumb.
Really fun teacher that really cares about his students. He's one of the few that openly recognize that he's still learning to teach and asks for your help. Theres alot of work, but its doable
Really cares that his students understand the subject matter. Often sarcastic, but entertaining at the same time. Assigns lots of self-graded homework, but if you can do the homework the test is a piece of cake. Also offers extra credit on test.
Gives you as many points as he can. Super fun, nice guy. Beware the donut problem - there's one type of problem that, if you get it wrong, you owe the whole class donuts! I think 2 people this semester got it wrong, so it's not too hard. Other than that, he explains things really well. You need to go to class, or you won't really understand.
Class time is invaluable. You will get your money's worth by being there. He can seem a little harsh sometimes, but that's just his personality. Funny once you get used to it. Humble in teaching. Always trying to improve. Beware of the dohnut problem.
Huge homework load in the beginning. Gets better over time. He's helpful during office hours. Weekly quizzes--notes are allowed on about half. The final is fair and easy to study for. Notes are allowed on all of the tests except the first. He can be impatient, but he clearly has a lot of experience teaching. Overall great teacher.
Bro Johanson is probably the best professor on campus. He knows how to teach, his lectures make the material ten times clearer, is eager to answer any problems outside of class. I was worried about my algebra skills starting class, and he would meet with me to help me out with simple math skills I hadn't picked out yet. Great guy, great class.
Great teacher! Some times he can be scatter brained but you still learn a lot. But do not miss class he takes attendance seriously!
He speaks like he teaches the why behind what you are supposed to learn. But his lectures do not teach the why. I did not feel like I learned much going to class. The workload for this course is ridiculous. I am unsure if anyone actually finished the homework. The preparation and quizzes alone take up hours of your time. He does not feel welcoming.
He is not good at answering questions. He will give you an answer and make you feel stupid for not knowing it. He is nice but he makes math something you never want to do. His lectures he covers the easiest things taking up the majority of the time while the difficult items take him less than 2 seconds to cover. Couldn't ask a question w/o knowing
The preparation assignments do not help at all. I spent most of my time doing those pointless assignments. He does not answer questions. You can ask questions but he never fully listens and makes you more confused. It is more beneficial to skip class and study from the textbook than listening to a lecture. He grades hard and his partial credit bad.
Extra Credit on every test. That is the best part. He does not answer questions very well. He struggles to let you finish asking your question, instead he thinks he knows what your asking and begins to ask you before he understands what you are asking. The preparation activities do not help at all. It takes away from the time you can study.
Brother Johanson is a great professor. He is very passionate in whatever he is teaching. Along with homework, he has prep assignments that are helpful for the following day. He teaches for understanding and is well humored.
He knows what he's teaching. He's been doing it for years and is good at it, but sometimes he expects you to be at the same level. He is loud and blunt, so if you don't like that then you may not be comfortable in his class. He is probably the best teacher for Calculus II here.
Great Calculus II teacher. It's not an easy class, but Brother Johanson explains everything very well and there is plenty of time to practice everything. He doesn't make the tests unnecessarily difficult, and there are extra credit problems on every exam. There's quite a bit of homework, but if you do all of it you should be able to pass no problem
Johanson is amazing. He can seem a bit cold at times but he actually cares about his students but you need to communicate with him. Don't be quiet. If you feel intimidated by him, tell him. If you feel he is rude, politely tell him so and he will change is manner. Very humble man, understanding. Talk to him, he is awesome. YOU GOT THIS, ENJOY!
This is a tough , but rewarding course. Brother Johanson knows the material very well, but can get a bit frustrated when students ask questions that have already been asked. He wants to help you understand, just seems to be a bit impatient when students are having trouble understanding, probably because there is a lot of material to get through.
Bro Johanson is a really caring prof. He starts out his lectures with a spiritual thought, which sets the tone for his class. He tries to get to know ALL of his students. He's always willing to help and wants his students to succeed. He can come off as mean and condescending at times, but only if he senses you aren't willing to put forth effort.
I struggled in Calc 1 so Calc 2 scared me a lot, but Bro. Joe was willing to answer questions and the homework had no deadlines so you could go back and rework problems before the tests. If you participate in class and try, he will try to meet you halfway. He always gives partial credit and extra credit problems!
Brother Johanson is VERY smart. He can be a little blunt at times, but he knows what he's talking about. If you have a question about the WHY behind a mathematical topic he can answer it. It took a little bit for me to get used to, but by the end of the semester, I really enjoyed the class.
I have never seen bullying by a professor at BYUI until I had Bro. Johanson. He would repeatedly humiliate a girl in my class daily, poor girl already had a hard time speaking up in class. He is arrogant and disrespectful. Will continually interrupt students and tell them how they are wrong. I've been astonished that he gets away with teaching here
Brother Johanson is very passionate about getting his teaching students into the field to prepare them for their careers. That being said, this class was really boring for me. I felt like it was a little bit pointless that we met for an hour a week because it was all about tutoring outside of the classroom. Besides that, Bro. Johanson is awesome!
The assignments are repetitive and confusing, but help build on each other. The teacher grades hard and expects specific answers on homework and from students. Not the greatest experience and not the greatest environment.
Since this is the tutoring mathematics class, I only met with Bro Johanson once a week and he still knew my name. It is apparent that he cares for his students and what he does. There were only a few assignments to go with our tutoring hours but they either complimented it nicely or were quick prep work to move you along in your major/minor.
This was an interesting class. Brother johanson expects specific answers in class and in the homework. If you do not say exactly what he wants he will not give you full credit. I found this course to be not very helpful since I have learned everything in previous courses.
The most awful professor. Paul thinks he knows absolutely everything and is unable to understand other students ideas or work. If your work is not done exactly they way he has in mind then you will receive a bad grade. Paul also has favorite students in his class. One of the worst professors I have ever had during my whole college experience.
He is extremely blunt. He is pretty impatient, overall I think he is good but I don't think i'd take him again. I like the way the class was organized. I thought he was pretty rude to students and he does kinda yell and get worked up. He does know what he's talking about though and can explain the whys.
Brother Johanson is kind of intimidating in class. He can be very intense, and even rude to certain students, normally he is harsher on males. If you went to his office, or office hours for extra help, he was very helpful, understanding, and kind. He does a very good job teaching and explaining though. I would take a class from him again.
Bro. Johanson is probably the best teacher for this course. At first you'll think that he's quite intimidating, but eventually you'll see that he uses his personality for humor and reinforcing very important points in your mind. He makes Calculus II way easier and is very lenient in partial credit. Take him if you can! You won't regret it.
I love Brother Johanson! He is genuinely an amazing teacher. He can be very intimidating but if you can get past that he cares a ton about his class and wants you to learn. He has some funny phrases like "your algebra is garbage". The class is extremely hard but that is just the nature of the class. He is probably the best for this class.
Brother Johanson can be intimidating he can also be kinda funny. He also wants the students to teach other students in the class.
Very easy class. You meet once a week for an hour (which can be kind of boring) and then tutor for two hours each week. Just make sure you do all the assignments (there is like 7), show up to every class, and get all your tutoring hours done. I only got a B+ because I missed class two times. He is a very smart professor.
don't take 190 in the spring. Schools get out 4 weeks into the semester, then you are stuck with 8 weeks of him pushing his views on how math should be taught in schools on random topics. He calls students out for not doing homework in front of the whole class, also calls you out if you don't remember how to do something in front of everyone.
Class was a lot of work and practice but I don't think I've ever felt more prepared for tests than I did in this class.
I was quite worried about my Calculus foundations, so I took this course to refresh. Very good decision. Brother Johanson is excellent at anticipating the mistakes you will make on the homework and exams, and goes over those things during class.
It is a difficult class but Bro. Johanson makes it manageable. DO THE PREP ASSIGNMENTS, it makes a huge difference. Sometimes he can interpret your questions wrong so you might have to ask again, but he is always open to discuss and clarify confusion. He also simplifies things a lot and provides great resources. He always gives partial credit.
THIS MAN WILL TEACH YOU CALCULUS. Before this course I felt like a lot of my Calculus fundamentals were off, but man, this guy... If you pass this class you will understand Calculus and be ready to move on. OUTSTANDING teacher.
The worst professor I have ever had at this school. He picks favorites in the class and targets the others. I remember answering a question in front of the class and he was very negative about my answer.
He just was pretty condescending. He acted like his class (one credit) was the most important class ever and it was annoying. He also would like call you out passive aggressively if you didn't understand something. Not a fan. Probably outside of teaching he's a nice guy but not a good professor.
Awesome teacher! A lot of people have mixed feelings about him because he shoots straight and hits hard on common mistakes made. He answered questions often and truly cared about the students. The class is designed to help you be prepared for the next lessons with the prep assignments and homework. Do those, put in effort and you'll do fine.
Is very passionate about math. I loved taking Brother Johanson's class, but if you have a soft skin i recommend taking another professor. He gets very excited and at times shouts about mistakes previous students have made. Use his office hours he is very helpful. Warning! He may call you out Infront of the class if he see's you make a mistake
Professor Johanson can be intimidating, but he genuinely cares about student learning. The class is challenging, but worthwhile if you engage. Unstuckstudy and the free textbook were great study aids.
I loved this professor! Easily my favorite from the semester! He learned the name of every student in the class and was very invested in their success His class is very hard, BUT he teaches it very well and in a way that prepares you for Multivariable Calc better than the other teachers. Just don't be a wimp and he'll be one of your favorites.
If you are taking the hardest subject of Calc II you have to take Brother Johanson. He made me love calculus and makes it wayyyyyy easier than any other professor. The way he grades is fantastic. Lots of partial credit and for math you have to have that. Teaches extremely well and wants students to succeed.
This professor is one of the best I have ever had. He truly cares about you and your success. He will help you in any way possible. He will not let you fail if you put in the effort. He is an amazing person and professor. Would highly recommend anybody to take a course from him.
He's amazing! Best professor in my opinion. I genuinely enjoyed Calculus because of him. Pay attention to the lectures, study the review and pro tip keep your note cards from the exams to make your notes for the final. If your sensitive just don't ask questions in front of the whole class because he is blunt.
