Don't go to this class!!! OK person with OK personally but seems to always mess up the grades!! Homework heavy !
10/10 Intelligent and easy going professor with a funny laugh. A lot of reading, but not too hard of a grader, his class has a lot of group work, all tests are group tests, and knows what he is doing.
By far the best professor I have ever taken at SMC. Super helpful and accommodating. Symbolic Logic is not an easy subject, but he makes it super accessible and even interesting. He's honestly the nicest guy, and I could not recommend him any more. An A is super attainable.
Amazingly clear and fluent lecture style. Great emphasis on working through assignments and problems in groups. This class could definitely have been a lot harder with a different teaching style. He's very easy to talk to and makes himself extensively accessible outside of the classroom as well, holds "coffee hours" as opposed to office hours!
Professor Klumpees lectures where amazing, very engaging and entertaining. He is a fairly easy grader and will be more than happy to help you if you are struggling. He hands out a few dense readings but for the most part very interesting. I LOVE HIS TEACHING STYLE. Take him for a fun class. I would recommend him to anyone!
Professor Klumpe is such a cool guy and is super sweet. The class could be so much harder because of the material but he makes it so easy to understand. You do a lot of class and group discussion, and all the tests and finals are in groups which is great. If you do the work, you'll get an A. He's a really nice grader. Would definitely recommend!
Class is discussion-based so make sure you participate and speak up in class. Super chill guy, talk to him about his family i honestly think that helped my grade. honestly just do all the homework and be thorough and you will get an A. As long as you show him that you understand basic concepts you'll be fine. don't be afraid to ask questions
One of the best professors I've taken. He answers all questions clearly and has flexible office hours. The reading material is usually difficult but his power points and homework assignments break down the main concepts which makes them a lot easier to understand.
A great professor, sweetest guy ever.
love this guy! highly recommend, super easy, group final, and only a few homework assignments and papers. the lectures are interesting and engaging and he is super nice.
He is absolutely one of the best and coolest teachers I have ever taken. If you want to learn something about philosophy take him, he really knows his stuff. As long as you read the material and understand his lectures you will past his tests.
Two things I admired about Prof. Klumpe is that 1. he doesn't use or need to use a text, which meant neither did we. He makes the subject simple, w/o removing too much content, to understand and if you don't he will personally sit with you to help you which brings in my 2nd point, he's truly a caring Professor, he wants you to get it and do well.
It was my first time taking a philosophy class so I was really worried. However, Professor Klumpe has amazing lectures that really helps you comprehend the material. The homework assignments and papers are really clear, and Professor Klumpe really cares about every single student. He cracks these little philosophy jokes which were corny but funny!
Professor Klumpe is one of the best professors I've ever had. He loves to get to know each of his students and genuinely cares about their success. He's a super nice and approachable guy. Go to his office hours and he will help you with anything! HW is not hard and there are group tests. Highly recommend his class!
This professor is almost unbelievably chill. His grading system and class structure is extremely flexible. You can get an A in this class easy but don't slack, he's a great person with good lectures that I'm sure he'll keep polishing over time. But if you just want an A do whatever you want except on the final paper! Do not mess that one up!
MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR EVER. He has taught me so much, his classes are inspirational. He is so patient with all the question I have and I really appreciate him for that. I'm one of those kids who just doesn't understand the material and the lecture (often times I feel like the dumbest) he would thoroughly explain everything to me in office hours.
Klumpe is a gem and provides an engaging learning atmosphere. His course design is group oriented and encouraging, but the material is tough so it's crucial to keep up with the reading and assignments each week or you will fall behind quickly. He is accessible outside of class and welcomes both questions and discussions. Highly recommend him!
Klumpe is the best. I took Phil 2 and Phil 9 with him, got an A in both! He's super helpful and a lot of his quizzes/assignments are group ones so it's pretty easy to get a good grade. I would definitely recommend taking his class.
I never thought that Phil 9 was hard, but with Paul K, it's super fun!!!!! Philosophy majors, take Phil 9 with Mr. Klumpe, believe me, with him, 0 zero regrets
This class was far and away the best one I've taken at SMC. Klumpe relies very heavily on in-class discussion, both between students and with him. The nature of the philosophy of ethics lends itself really well to this teaching method, so if you engage in class, you'll do really well.
One of the best professors. Professor Klumpe is very funny and very easy to get along with. His lectures are very engaging and not boring at all. He's very chill and is very good at explaining lectures so the four essays you have to do aren't that hard as long as you understand the material. Definitely would recommend
Klumpe is probably the kindest and most reasonable professor you will ever have. The course is kind of difficult, but just show up and do the homework - which isn't overwhelming - and you'll be fine. He has regular office hours and is super accessible, and grades everything really quickly. Also the textbook is free online which is fantastic!
I took Klumpe for Winter 2017 and it was awesome. His lectures are interesting and he gives you opportunities to do well in the class. His the best. He grades your paper s generously if you show understanding and effort. Awesome guy and amazing teacher.
Klumpe is a great professor who goes out of his way to make sure youre getting the grade you deserve! His lectures are interesting and he answers any questions you have and tries to make sure you understand before he moves on to the next topic. Hes passionate with what he teaches and as a student you can tell. Take his class you wont regret it!
Amazing professor but so much reading and the readings are difficult. 4 essays and 4 exams throughout the semester with a couple pop-quizzes but he always gives a heads-up. If you are willing to put in the work and want to learn then definitely take him. He is cool, funny, and you can see how much passion and knowledge he has about the subject.
Professor Klumpe is perfect! He is kind, polite, organized, fair, and very clear in his explanations. He is always there to help in anything you might need. His Symbolic Logic was the easiest and the least time-consuming class I've ever taken. Group work made it even easier. Would take him over and over again! Best Professor at SMC
You can tell hes really passionate about philosophy and teaching; he gives you clear and helpful feedback when you ask him for help on translating logic. He also got his Philosophy degree in UC Berkeley so he is definitely a hard-working professor.
Amazing professor! I absolutely loved this class. Comes in with a great attitude everyday and challenges his students. I honestly believe he is the best professor at SMC and strongly recommend his classes. Symbolic logic isn't an easy course but it is so fun to learn. You'll struggle throughout but it will be worth it in the end. Points matter BTW.
Absolutely no cons, great prof, goes above and beyond as far as giving of his time for office hours, interesting and fun subject (for me), engages with students, tests are neither too easy or too difficult. I'm a physics major, so unfortunately I doubt I'll get a chance to take him again... we need more folks like him in the math department!
Klumpe is probably one of the best professor's I have ever had at SMC. Took him during the summer session, and although the material is difficult, Klumpe truly wants you to do well, and as long as you do the work, study, and show up at office hours, you will get an A. Do not get overwhelmed in the beginning, it really is not that bad at all
Prof. Klumpe is one of the best professor I have ever had at SMC. I transfer to UC Berkeley for Political Economy and Philosophy, and I can say without a doubt that I would not have made it without him. Very good feedback, genuinely cares for his students, super sharp and knowledgeable. The epitome of what an outstanding teacher is supposed to be
My favorite professor at SMC. His class is very interesting and interactive. Please take this class whether you are a philosophy major or not!
Easy A! Great Professor ! Must take this class!
Amazing professor he really goes above and beyond. His class requires textbooks but the notes and lectures are so detailed you probably will not need them. lectures are always informative and helpful. Tests are group tests so you learn more instead of just trying to memorize everything.
He is a great guy and cares about his students very much. The lectures are pretty interesting and interactive. Overall, he is a great teacher!
Great teacher! He lets you do what you want- so if you want to be on your phone the whole time he doesn't care. But, his lectures are worth listening to and they make you want to be part of class discussions. The essays are straightforward. All his tests (including his final) are taken in groups. You do need to put in slight work, but still easy A
Really great professor. He is incredibly smart and it's enjoyable to listen to him lecture about philosophy. He gives really great feedback and is always willing to help students out with their work. The class isn't hard, and you can always get help from him. There are quizzes, essays, and tests throughout the semester (tests are group tests).
A great professor who cares about his students success and level of interest. He gave great lectures that lead you through the material and provoked questions.
I personally hate philosophy but he made it tolerable. He will explain everything to you as long as you ASK! I recommend him to anyone who loves philosophy or needs to fulfill their scholars units. Not a lot oh HW but you do need to write the occasional paper
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! AN AMAZING TEACHER WHO IS PASSIONATE ABOUT THE SUBJECT AND DOES NOT GIVE BUSY WORK. THE CLASS CONSISTS OF A COUPLE QUIZZES, FOUR PAPERS, AND CLASS DISCUSSION. SUPER EASY AND INTERESTING CLASS. KLUMPE IS SUCH AN CHILL GUY THAT ALTHOUGH I AM NOT A PHILOSOPHY MAJOR, I LOOKED FORWARD TO EVERY CLASS!
Great professor! Class was easy, you don't have to buy the books or do the readings if you just show up and listen, he'll explain it all to you. There's a few tests (all group tests) and a few papers, which he graded pretty easily. I learned a lot and really enjoyed it.
Really great professor hes super helpful and keeps the class in control during controversial topics. Content is kind of hard to understand at times.
If you believe in your own capability and attend office hours, you will get an A. Even better, understanding the material is empowering. Im currently taking symbolic logic and ethics with him, and its been the best semester. Hes on your side and he wants you to succeed In the long run and short term. His influence got me into Pitzer.
Honestly Klumpe is one of those Professors that connects and influences students- regardless of the subject being taught. His patience, kindness, and dedication goes far beyond the standard "good professor." An ideal system would be one where educators bring the same level of quality and care that Professor Kumpe brings to his students.
Klumpe wants all of his students to succeed, he is very accommodating, he is helpful during his office hours, he makes class fun with discussions and thought provoking questions, he gives out some group quizzes, he explains the difficult concepts very well so that it is easy to comprehend, the tests are multiple choices, there are three essays
Professor Klumpe is by far the best philosophy instructor you can take. Despite having taken this course in a short semester, he truly believes in each and every one of his students success and goes out his way to helping you understand the content of the course. Attend every class session, put in the hard work and youll pass with a superb grade.
/Klumpe is a very kind guy and wants you to succeed, knows his stuff! the class consisted of 3 essays, a few easy assignments, 4 group quizzes, and a midterm and final. For the tests/quizzes there is a study guide and most of the questions end up on the test. He's a very slow grader tho. I didn't get higher than a B on any essay and end up with 94%
A dream of a professor: clean handwriting, well-structured classes, extensive study guides & lecture notes, timely feedback, wide-open availability, brilliant sense of humor. The only way you can fail this class is if you 1. Skip >1-2 lectures (very easy to fall behind) or 2. Sit on your computer and refuse to pay attention.
Worst teacher I've ever had, went from 6 hw to 12, dull lectures not in the least bit captivating. Barley time for group work which is KEY to surviving class get a tutor. Material is very difficult to grasp after 1st 2 topics and he is not capable of teaching it in a way that's helpful in the slightest. GROUP QUIZ when hw is collected. Not worth it
Took Professor Klumpe's philosophy 09 course because I hated all the other politicized options from other instructors. Professor Klumpe was great-- he has a very relaxed lecture style and he understands how to teach peculiar aspects of Logic in an easy to understand way. Don'get complacent in the first half of the course and you should be fine.
I like Klumpe. I strongly dislike philosophy and took it for a GE requirement, but I ended up doing well. He goes through things really fast and I was confused at times, but he is very helpful/caring if you go to his office hours for help. The quizzes were difficult and often covered things beyond the study guide. The essays were easy.
He is very cool and nice. He teaches very good. I admire his patients. If you follow his handouts you definitely will get A.
Knowing how to write a good philosophy paper is key to doing well in this class. That and showing up. Luckily he grades extremely fairly and gives great feedback. Also if you want to do well on quizzes and tests, review the powerpoint slides. If you pay attention and do the work, getting an A is very feasible. He's also very flexible&understanding.
Prof Klumpe is a nice guy but his lectures overcomplicate topics that are already complicated. Requires several costly books that are barely used during the semester. Not considerate for low income students. Group quizzes are ok as long as you get one of the smart students in your group to pull the weight. Never checks email. Slow grader.
The most wholesome prof ever! Sweet guy and he really enjoys what he's teaching. Quizzes and tests are all open book. Papers are a little difficult but if you follow the criteria you will get a great grade. Great class and breakout room discussions. I'm so happy that I took this course. Tip-study groups help. Don't fall behind in material too!
Ethics and Critical Thinking. He is by far the best teacher I have ever had. He explains the material very clearly. He also allows for in class discussion about his lectures to ensure no students are confused. However much work you put into this class determines what you will get out of it. Can be an "easy" B-A. Can also be a life changing class.
At SMC, it is hard to find a better instructor than Professor Klumpe. His classes (even online) are very engaging; he genuinely cares about his student's success, he is very prepared in his field of study, and he explains complex concepts clearly. The assignments are not difficult, don't be complacent as the semester's start, and you'll do great.
I cannot rant enough about how great Klumpe is. His lectures are so interesting, engaging, and he really wants you to understand and learn the material. He is a super interesting, easy to get along with teacher that wants you to succeed. As a right winger in a left wing state and class, he is super respectful to opposing views. LOVE HIM! TAKE HIM!!
Dr. Klumpe is an extraudinary instructor. The course material can be heavy, not for its difficulty, but for the topics treated. However, even taking Organic Chemistry or Astrophysics could be memorable and pleasant if Prof. Klumpe taught those classes.
Dr Klumpe is one of the best professors I've ever had. This class was far from my academic focus and he still made it very enjoyable. He takes complex philosophical concepts and breaks them down in a way that you'll be surprised to understand as well as you do by the end of the unit. Very organized, caring, and down to earth. I highly recommend
Klumpe is an extremely kind and caring professor. If you read the assigned reading you will do very well on the exams and discussions. Work hard and you'll be more then fine for his class. It's very important however though to understand the language of Klumpenese as that is the main language used throughout the course. Good luck fellow comrades.
Many of the course topics were quite difficult to grasp, and he often overcomplicated them through his lectures. I highly recommend studying the ancient language, Klumpenese, as it is integral to your success in the course. Furthermore, make sure your essays appeal to his politics. If you fail to appeal to liberal ideas, your grade will suffer!
Taking Symbolic Logic with Prof. Klumpe was extremely informative and enlightening. He flawlessly transitioned from general concepts to complex ideas in a way which could be understood by most of the class, and was readily available whenever a question came up. Every math and science student at SMC should try to take this class with this professor!
Great Professor, Stress Inducing Class, unless you've taken philosophy in the past and you like it, then go all In, its philosophy the teacher is chill, get ready to read though. Class seems easy in the beginning gets tough soon. Absolutely no extra credit sadly. LIke i said though he's a good guy, passionate in his work. Just not for me and many.
He is kind and caring beyond belief. Classes are easy; just get ready to read. Super recommended!
Klumpe is one of the top professors in the entire school system. Very patient, caring, and thorough. Symbolic Logic in 6 weeks is a tough subject. It is like a math class. He let's you collaborate on quizzes and assignments. Daily group work in Zoom helps a lot. No extra credit. (Ax)Lxk = Everyone loves Klumpe!
Prof. Klumpe is an amazing professor. Excellent lectures and organized class. He is super nice and really wants you to succeed. You can attend or watch recordings in his online class, but I wouldn't recommend missing them. Phil 9 itself is a very fun and interesting class. It's cool that you can write an entire argument with symbols.
He was honestly one of the best professors I've had at SMC. He was funny, had great lectures, essays were easy to understand. You do need to be in class to understand what is going on but class is honestly fun. He cares about his students and knows hows to keep us engaged. 10/10 recommend his class.
Such an amazing professor and person. Super caring for his students and engages in conversation with them. Although logic isn't a super easy subject, his class felt easy because of the way he taught and graded.
Professor Klumpe is very kind and willing to work with you. The class material, however, is challenging and although he is very good in his lectures it's NOT easy. This class gave me a lot of stress and honestly, I have never questioned my own intelligence that much. So in short the professor is great but symbolic logic is a horrible subject.
Dr. Klumpe is the best professor you will ever come across. If you are not taking his class, you are missing out!
I loved taking Prof Klumpe's class. There was lots of reading but the quizzes/ tests were not very difficult. He gives really good feedback and he uploads his lecture slides and reading guides to Canvas so it was very easy to study for exams. His lectures were very informative and you could tell that he cared a lot about the class
Klumpe is a great professor and a super nice guy. His lectures are very interesting, covering a wide variety of topics. He doesn't overload you with work, and as long as you do the readings, you will do fine.
Klumpe is undeniably a beloved professor at SMC, and it's not hard to see why. His lectures are not only fantastic but also delivered with a charming blend of kindness, humor, and genuine intelligence. Beyond academics, Klumpe is a family man who sincerely aims to bring out the best in his students.
Lectures are very personable and engaging, but tends to let some students monopolize the discussion that turns turns into a group debate. There are 4 group exams. Uses class time to stream 2 hour films. Prof is very flexible with paper deadlines and extensions, but also cancels classes and changes assignments quite a bit. Overall, great class.
Klumpe is one of those professors that changes your college experince. He makes modern philosophers interesting. The essays were actually enjoyable to write. I never missed a day of class since we have small in-class assignments. Really good feedback, flexible on dates, and will make you consider majoring in philosophy!
Super cool dude, but the classes are hard if you miss literally any classes.
Prof Klumpe is such a weirdly wonderful dude. He's engaging, humorous and cares deeply about philosophy. I really thought I'd struggle to make sense of the people we were reading but he's made it accessible and relatable. His group exams are my favorite. They're stimulating, entertaining and a brilliant way to test comprehension. He's great.
Nice professor.
Took this as a GE, expecting a boring class but was a highlight of my semester ngl. The class becomes more lively when everyone participates, so always answer his questions or share your thoughts.
Professor Klumpe & his PHILO2 class is wonderful! He truly cares about his students & has engaging, fun lectures that are important to attend bc the info is relevant to the (group) exams! However, missing a few is okay bc he posts them on canvas! Very manageable workload, just keep up with the readings! I definitely recommend, he's a sweet guy! :)
Dude is a beast. Smart smart dude who clearly loves the material. He isn't scared to correct a student but in a helpful way, not scorning them. I've taken multiple classes with Klumpe and I would for sure recommend it. He top 2 but ain't 2.
It's a pretty hard class, but you get what you put into it. I somehow managed to get an A even though it was hard. However, I can't express how great of a professor Klumpe is. He genuinely cares about his students and will ask everyone questions about their life when he walks around the classroom. He even helped me vote in the election! Great guy:)
He does respond to emails, but his class was to hard for whats suppose to be a generic general ed class for most people. I'd avoid him if I can.
Makes you think and reflect on what's important and will carry far beyond his class.Great lectures that transfer his genuine interest in the subject to the students. Grades fairly and makes sure the knowledge you get is your main concern.Very interesting person for outside-of-class chats.Among the best profs I have ever met across multiple schools.
For some classes he might be OK. However I would avoid him for PHIL 9 - Symbolic Logic.
Great professor. Pay attention during lectures and you'll be just fine. He is also very good at explaining the concepts, don't be afraid to ask for help.
I joined scared, thinking a college class would be out of my reach as I just finished 10th grade. However, despite the complicated symbols and ideas, Professor Klumpe made the class engaging even as I spent my summer in a classroom. Some days have longer/harder homework than others, but don't worry, he goes over it in class prior to turning it in.
Lots of readings, do the readings otherwise lecture will be difficult to follow. Essay Assignments are very straightforward simply go to office hours and ask for feedback. Chill dude.
Prof. Klumpe was great! the subject of symbolic logic was difficult he's very patient and understanding towards his students. This class requires effort and time to receive a high grade, but he will make sure that his students succeed. He also tries to get to know his students which goes a long way. He clearly is passionate about philosophy!
