You will learn nothing, unless you're interested in his son.

Pay attention to the online discussions. He doinked me for not getting involved.
He grades hard, and is very boring-same material you learned in MKT 350
Unclear, Worst Prof EVER
Worst prof. ever. Needs to be fired, can't teach. Unfair. Avoid at all costs.

Funny, but unclear as to what he is grading you for, doesn't give A's
HORRIBLE PROF! If you have a good gpa...DON T take him!!!! Gives no A's
Funny in class, Best class I have taken
Not a good professor or person. Will not look you directly in the eye and give you a straight answer. Will tell you good job , then give you a bad grade; acts like he has your best interest in mind, but doesn't.
Seems to be a very friendly and helpful person. However, I should have followed sage advice, "never take a class the 1st time it's offered." Doesn't seem to understand that students in the MBA program have jobs and families.
Professor Lane was one of the best teachers I've ever had. While he does grade fairly difficult, you learn a ton much from him. He has a lot of knowledge in the field. He also lectures very little, and holds lots of discussions. He is really funny and a great prof. I'd take his class again!
Funny Prof, interesting. He had more activities than lectures which was great. He does grade kind of hard and you don't necessarily know why he gave you the grade he did.
I put "0" effort into this class and still got a B. He's funny and makes 3 1/2 hours go by fast. He grades kind of tough, but things will work out in the end.
A very unqualified teacher, that think he’s very well informed about Ent. topics but in fact just knows unprepared basics and seems lost all day long... learned little other then how to teach a high school level class. Really??, his other class got canceled?? O Ya thats right he’s unqualified prof
Worst prof. ever! He will assign you 40 question quizes on-line and only give you 30 mins. to do. I took no tests. We had to write papers and it wasn't even a SWS class. Papers may seem better than tests but he grades soooo hard. Don't take this prof. He is TERRIBLE!
Kiknd of a strange man, but full of information, stories and tons of experience. He grades kinda hard, and the online quizzes are awful, but there are no tests. Class is interesting; more activities than lecture. You'll learn some interesting facts about him and sometimes he brings food =)
Nice guy, really loves marketing. His class is a bit different, but is actually kinda fun. Just stick to the critera sheet for the assignments and listen to what he says, and you'll be fine.

I can see why people might not enjoy Dr. Lane i don't see him being much of a marketing professor. But when it comes to him teaching Entrepreneurship which is his specialty, take him, he's amazing, his knowledge and insight are priceless, great discussions, classwork, etc. Keep it up Dr. Lane.
Dr. Lane is a funny man with a good sense of purpouse in Life. You will not be unhappy should you take his Ent. classes.
His classes are very laid back. He brings snacks every class period too. No tests, just online quizzes every week which can be very difficult. he grades kind of hard on papers as well. Overall, he's pretty good.
Besides the harsh grading and the ton of papers I really cannot complain too much. I was afraid of marketing because I was not at all creative. Well thanks to Dr Lane I found my creative side! The papers are alot of work, but worth it. You will learn a lot from writing them! He may be a crazy old man but he is a lot of fun. He is there to help you
Taking 2 credit hour class where expectations are similar to at least 3 cr hour class. Expectations of the multiple writing assignments on paper seem clear, but grading according to those expectations is unclear. Grading scale for class unclear. Content offered in class is fair but detracted from by going off on things unconnected to material.
I will agree that his grading is a little unclear, but he is a good prof and will not bore you with power point lectures. Get involved in class and on blackboard and you should do well.
Did not enjoy this class what so ever. Grading scale was unreasonable and things were made extremely unclear. One big group project. No tests. A few papers here and there. Not fun, not exciting, impossible to get an A.
FUN prof! He is crazy and does a lot of crazy stuff. Tells good stories about travels and is an all around funny guy. One giant group project, that really helps you understand new product development. A different kind of teaching, in a very good way. He is understanding and is always willing to help. He teaches in new and interesting ways.
great teacher... one of the best. A bit hard at times but flexible.
Professor Lane is the best professor i have ever had at GV, definately a great guy that loves teaching. I've learned a lot from him. Hands on learning is what he's all about. Assignments are a big tough, but totally worth it if you are passionate about entrepreneurship!! highly suggest this Prof!! :-)
I would not suggest taking this course. The professor expected way to much and has an ego issue.
He sure likes to talk about his money, but you would never guess he had any by his appearance.
My best experience at gvsu so far. He keeps the class interesting and he cares about his students.
gives out his cell phone number to students. he is always willing to help students with projects / ideas etc. wish he taught more classes
i rate this professor 11 / 10! actually cares about students,, gives out his cell phone number!!
Professor Lane is a great guy, he's always fun, helpful and very caring about his students. Be forewarned however that his grading can be extremely tough. I would however recommend him to any student who has a passion for ent.
Professor Lane is one of the best, most caring and innovative professors I have ever had. He uses real world examples and leads students with real world projects, instead of teaching from a textbook. I have also seen his work in Nicaragua, and he truly cares about helping people and teaching business innovation and entrepreneurship.
Professor Lane is great. For those people that say he has an ego issue and likes money you are ridiculous. The class is called Entrepreneurship so wouldn't you want a teacher that has several successful businesses and shares his experiences with the class? I know I would. It's a little bit of work but none if it is that difficult. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Too self-centered.
He is only somewhat easy because he only grades to meet statistical averages. You'll here about the problems with his son every class. You'll feel like the class is an inconvenience to his Nicaragua trips. Don't fall for his fasade that he actually cares about your well being, learning or course score. He should not have a job teaching.
Inept, too much about his son and himself.
Questionable ethics.Talks about himself too much and brags about his money.
I had him 2 semesters & I thought he was the most wonderful man. He gave me more confidence in myself and even asked me to work for him editing some of his papers. I did the work and he NEVER sent me my check for it and now has disappeared, and hasn't returned my e-mails. Thought he believed in me, but I guess not.
Had to write detailed papers every week. I NEVER got full credit for anything, always a point or two off (others students said the same about their scores). I thought I was doing pretty decent in the class, then got a C+ after busting out all those papers, plus a group final. Ridiculous. No tests, but not worth it. It could have been an SWS class.
Nicest guy around! He truly cares about his students. He once called me just to see how I was doing. His lecturing style is quite boring and never pertains to the actual assignments. Most of the work is easy; although, if you aren't one of the favorites early on, it may be tough. Grades on a curve. I would recommend, just a great guy!
Terribly inconsistent grader that scores based on specific requirements, but explains assignments holistically. Class work is extremely useless in terms of the grading and learning done in the course.
He is a really nice and funny guy but a lot of his assignments can be quite unclear. He is also quite inconsistent with his grading and he definitely has favorites, but with that being said he also treats everyone with respect. This class is hard to get the grades you want sometimes and that can be frustrating but it is a fun class altogether!
Assignments are horrible to determine. Grading is biased and he talks about himself a lot. VERY poor interactions with students in my class and looks down in his dealings.
No tests in this class whatsoever, but he sometimes had 4 group projects going on at one time. You will not get a 100% on anything because his grading criteria is vague. You have small presentations a lot and he rarely lectures. He's kind of crazy. Jumps up on tables. Talks more about himself than anything else, but you meet a lot of other students
Dr. Lane is not consistent with his grading from person to person which is frustrating. Not a very hard class with hard assignments but his grading could screw you over. Talks about himself and his money A LOT. Jumps on tables during lecture which is impressive considering he is 65+ so he is energetic but self centered and inconsistent.
Hilarious, energetic, sweet professor. He loves to make fun of himself and jump on tables. No tests ever, but you do quite a few presentations. A lot of students complain that his grading is unclear, but if you simply ask him about the rubric, he will explain it to you.
Dr. Lane is a wonderful professor who is always willing to talk things through if you don't understand him. Although full credit is a rarity, he still grades assignments and projects fairly. Also, rubrics are given that explain EVERY aspect of the grading criteria, so you always know what he is expecting of you.
Wonderful person and extremely good lecturer. If you are an intelligent, hard working person you are going to love Him. I have never met a person who is more inspirational than Paul.
Dr. Lane was one of my favorite professors. Grading was 100% clear down to the exact point because he gave out a rubric with every assignment. If you do the work you will pass! and if you miss an assignment, he will work with you on getting in done. He was very helpful.
Takes 2 points off every time you miss class no matter the reason... Does not give any leeway. Had to miss for internship one day and he still deducted points. Also... He'll give you negative points in attendance. For example) -2/10.
This man is crazy and fun. Very tough on students and opinionated though.
I feel like I learned absolutely nothing in his class. If you like to skip occasionally, seriously choose a different professor because the classes consist of him talking about how great he is, so naturally, you feel you can skip, but he'll screw you on attendance points. Don't buy the book, I didn't use it once. His class was easy, but painful.
Frustrated. I spend hours pouring over his rubrics and making sure I have included everything he wants in my assignments and I never get full credit. Not sure how much more I can do. I am a straight A student and I'll be lucky to get a B- in this class.
You have to put a lot of work into this class but it's relatively easy work. A lot of group projects but they are usually a fun topic. I showed up to class every day and sat on my laptop without paying attention and got an A so as long as you show up and put in a decent amount of work you are golden. Save yourself some money and skip the book.
One of the worst classes that I have taken at Grand Valley, the class was unorganized and dysfunctional. Expectations were unclear and documents were hard to find because everything was in a discussion, sometimes a discussion within a discussion. It feels like he grades things on how he "feels" about them.
Dr. Lane is quite the character! The first semester is very challenging and scary but I am glad I stuck it out through second semester! You definitely have to work hard but it is possible to do well and you will grow a lot because of this class. Only thing is grading is confusing but even if you don't do much you can pull through with a C.
Professor Lane is one of the most interesting profs I've ever had.. He travels a lot and cancelled class a few times because of it. Attendance is mandatory. He has a clear grading rubric but it is nearly impossible to get full points even if you follow it perfectly. No tests or textbook is a plus. Did spend a lot of time and some money on projects
Professor Lane really care about his students as individuals- he always reminds us he is only an email or phone call away. His class is lecture heavy but not too difficult. He is understanding and will help you when needed.
Dr. Lane is a good professor. He is a very tough grader and it is hard to get an A in his class. He is a funny guy and the in class portion was a ton of fun. As for outside of class, be ready for over 12 hours of homework a week.
Take Dr Lane! He doesn't believe in giving exams and his lectures are so much fun. He usually just puts you in groups and has you play games or give small presentations. Made the class so much better than expected.
Professor Lane is unorganized, horrible at grading, vague about assignments, inconsistent with due dates and instructions, unqualified to teach, talks to much about himself, and will only give you an A if you kiss his arse. Do NOT take this Prof. I could teach any of his classes right now, because he doesn't actually present any knowledge.
Worst professor I have ever had at Grand Valley.
Professor Lane is very respected and knows a lot about what he is talking about but he is so busy that his classes aren't that important to him. Very hard grader you can almost expect to get a B in the class unless you go above and beyond for every project. Also lots of homework but that's expected being in the honors college. Can be confusing.
Fascinating, great sense of humor, and very knowledgeable, but all assignments come through Blackboard and rubrics are unclear and poorly made, which is made worse because he's very hard to contact for clarification. He's also a hard grader but is bad at explaining what he's looking for, so grading is very unpredictable. Even so, it's a cool class.
Lane was an interesting guy teaching an interesting class, but it was plagued by many issues. Many long assignments graded in the toughest ways imaginable as points were knocked off for not "being amazing." Many hours would go into an assignment that would simply result in a B for seemingly no reason. Cool guy, but tough and confusing professor.
Lane is one of the most disorganized professors at GV. He doesn't utilize anything yet always talks about innovation. All assignments are scattered around the discussion boards and his grading makes no sense at all. Has no clear guidelines for assignments and grades randomly.
You will love this professor if you enjoy spending hours and hours on discussion boards and homework every week! And it gets better he does not give 100% on anything! The assignment requirements are very unclear and you don't learn one thing in his classes. His assignments have deadlines but if you post your assignment ON the due date he marks down
Dr. Lane is a great guy, in class, he is full of energy and loves interacting with his students. Outside of class is where the homework and unclear grading comes in. It is very hard to get an A, however, after taking the class I realized I learned a lot when it comes to creating a product.
I have nothing good to say. The most disorganized professor I've ever had/heard of. It is difficult to navigate his Blackboard and find assignments because everything is part of a discussion thread. The topics he talks about seem to be self-fulfilling because they have nothing to do with marketing or business, but rather third-world countries.
Grading criteria was often confusing. But by going to office hours and talking to him, he would usually make changes. He really wants you to actually care about what you are doing, not just try and get an easy grade. Seems eccentric, but a pretty decent person. Just not someone I would want as my professor. There are 3 sections/grades for the class
First off grading is all subjective, Paul is a very tough grader even though the rubric may seem very clear. Get ready for lots of group projects with very short deadlines. Blackboard is used to post all assignments and you will be posting on this weekly. No exams, but lots of silly class activities, this class is not an easy A, expect to get a B.
Thanks for the climate change fear mongering propaganda. If I didn't need this for my degree I would have walked out.
The reason why people think this professor is a hard grader is because they expect an easy A. After all, Business and Marketing are some of the easiest majors at GVSU. So you actually have a professor with real world experience and you complain that he is difficult? Do you even want to learn? Not accessible? He gives out his phone number!
Dr. Lane is a great person, and very funny. However, his rubrics are unclear, and he grades extremely harsh. Expect hours of work, for a B grade at best. Go above and beyond the rubric if you want a mediocre grade. The class requires a lot of work, and is not worth it. Take a different honors sequence.
Super nice and funny guy. But you won't learn ANYTHING from him specifically. The class is four assignments every 2 weeks, and that's it. No exams or quizzes. That being said, the four assignments are incredibly time consuming and tedious, and often frustrating. You'll seemingly never get a 100% on an assignment, no matter how great it is.
I took this course as an elective and I would not recommend this class to anyone unless changes are made. No class or lecture or textbook to learn from - only assignments that are extremely time consuming with unclear instructions that are graded on a harsh grading scale that is also unclear.
My MKT 350 course was Dr. Lane was so infuriating because of the lack of clarity in the instructions. It seemed like he wrote his instructions while black out drunk, as they had so many typos and run on sentences that made absolutely no sense. He then had the audacity to be an extremely tough grader, although I did learn a lot in the class.
Worst professor I have ever had. I put 100% effort and attention into all my classes and I've never had issues getting a straight A- not even in A&P. However with this class, no matter how hard I tried it was never good enough. The prof would comment rude and condescending responses instead of actually trying to be helpful. Just wants you to do bad
Dr. Lane cares a lot about his students and makes the class very fun and interactive. He's a super tough grader and I'm not sure anyone (or very few) in my class has gotten 100% on any of the assignments we've turned in, but that's because he cares about content over grades. Instructions are often very unclear, contradicting, and vague.
The toughest grader I've ever had. I can put 110% percent into my work, follow instructions to a T, and still get 20/25. Besides this, he's a very kind person and wants to help you succeed
Dr. L gets lots of hate because he is on a different wavelength. He has trouble communicating clearly because he has so many ideas in his head. He's a very nice man and will help outside of class. In the class, you go through the entire process of new product development. He's just messy on grading and directions but he curves. You'll learn a lot.
Dr. Lane is really nice guy but a horrible teacher, at least in this class. His rubrics are extremely unclear, class is poorly organized, turnaround time for assignments is super short, and he is extremely hard to follow. He goes on tangents all the time, wasting class time. Once again super nice professor, but don't take this class.
He co-teaches it with Professor Lafferty. It is a 6-hour long class, so beware. There are lots of assignments with rubrics that are vague. Dr. Lane is an interesting guy and tries to make class fun, but if you are not in the marketing/business field I do not recommend taking it. It is really hard to get full points in this class.
I also love this guy. Super caring guy, but you can see his age at work. He is not tech savvy at all with blackboard and emails. can be confusing at times. however, this guy is incredibly smart and understands our generation even in his old age. "The guy with the tie"
Lane is such a caring and kind person. Because of that, I would like to rate him as awesome but I can't because of the class. Time-wise, classes are 6 hours + about 4 hours of HW per week. They have rubrics but extra clarification is needed, which both professors are always happy to provide. The organization is okay but confusing. Great guy though!
Dr. Lane is a great guy he cares a lot about his students. But this class being 6 hours long is really tough. On top of it being 6 hours long, you are assigned homework that takes 4+ hours. Which is hard to manage. He co-teaches this class with Professor Lafferty. Their rubrics are confusing, but they are willing to provide extra clarification.
Dr. Lane is really receptive to feedback. He has made a lot of changes based on what he hears from students. The class is very easy if you do the work, and the blackboard page is very organized. The due dates are consistent throughout the semester, which I appreciate. He is very caring and touches base with students often. Take his class!
Although Dr. Lane is a great guy, I really did not like the way the class was run. The lectures were easy but long. Lane is a good dude and a great inspiration. However, the homework is a disaster. It almost always seems pointless, takes very long to do, and for some assignments I spent more time deciphering the rubric than doing the actual work.
Professor Directions given to assignments are never clear. Also, the assignments are hard and only worth a few points, and he is a very tough grader.
Do not take a class with Professor Lane! While he's a nice guy and provides okay feedback, his assignments are unclear, and he's an extremely tough grader. The instructions were confusing, leaving me unsure of expectations. Despite his experience, a shift in teaching style or stepping back might benefit students.
Professor Lane is a bit quirky, but if you engage with his teaching style, you'll actually learn a lot. The workload is intense, with frequent assignments, but using tools like unstuck study can help streamline your study process. Attend class, do the work, and you'll do well.
It's tough to get good grades on his assignments, his rubrics seem straightforward, but I can never get a good grade because of how tough a grader he is. His comments come off as rude and condescending towards different students in discussion posts. I unfortunately had to take his class because of my minor.
he gave us munchie food dudes a chiller
Very nice guy, definitely is passionate about marketing. I wanted to rate him higher but unfortunately he is a very tough grader. It seemed like he was always looking for more with every assignment, but this is an intro marketing class. Lectures always went the full three hours and you lose points if you don't attend.
Dr. Lane is very knowledgeable and has been all over the world. This class specifically had lots of presentations. For specific assignments, he looks for minor details, if you have that information you will get a good grade, if not, then good luck. The instructions are also sometimes unclear, and it is hard to determine if you will get full points.
