Engaging. This professor comes to class wanting you to participate. Passionate about the subject matter. Extremely knowledgable.
awesome
This professor is great. He is very knowledgeable in Middle Eastern history and state of current affairs. Simulation at the end of the semester is very fun and interesting. Highly recommend any of his classes.
This professor is very knowledgeable about the Middle East. Made lectures very interesting, while providing great background history and how it relates to the current state of affairs. Also had this professor for 380/Adv. I.R. and was equally impressed. Had fun and interesting simulations for both. Highly recommend taking any of his classes.
Professor Lenze is great! He keeps an open mind when listening to student's claims and his grading is very fair. Going to class is important and reading the text isn't a bad idea either. Lenze is passionate and knowledgeable about international affairs...overall he is a 10/10 instructor!
FACT: I would let this attractive man develop my nation. He is very knowledgeable and approachable. I learned a lot about politics as well.
Excellent. Just plain good teaching, policies, assignments, grading... everything.
One of the best teachers in the Political Science Department! If you want to take the most out of his classes and do the best on his papers, read the material. He ask that you read a lot but it very worth it when you see the 'A' on the paper. If you want to learn a lot about the Arab-Israeli Conflict and Middle Eastern Politics, take his class!
All-around stand up guy. He's very knowledgeable and passionate; it's clear he cares about his students too. He's got a great sense of humor too. Definitely need to show up to class regularly though and be prepared to get theory shoved down your throat. Totally worth the work though, can't go wrong with a Lenze class!
One of my favorite professors in the department! His Middle Eastern Politics class was the most interesting class I've taken and I can't to take his capstone class next year! He's so passionate about what he teaches and it makes the material that much more interesting. He's also pretty laid back and very approachable.
What is there to say about Dr. Lenze? He's the best. He really knows his stuff and is really funny and makes lectures interesting. You have 5 papers and 2 exams before the final and you get to watch Dr. Strangelove in class. GO TO CLASS- if a lot of the class was missing you get extra credit on an exam for going.
If you ever have the chance to take a class with Lenze, do it. He is hands down the best professor I have had so far at NAU. He knows his stuff and is more than willing to give you help if you need it -- whether you need a definition repeated or you need some assistance in office hours. Even if you don't like polisci, take a class with him.
LENZE IS THE MAN! Very interesting classes with a good sense of humor, very fair amount of work and he is very helpful and responsive in his emails. Choose Lenze whenever you possibly can. I've taken 120, 360, 361, 421C and 482 with him, I wish he taught every POS course at NAU.
Loved this class! If you're interested in learning about modern American foreign policy, this is a great class to take. Fairly easy so long as you pay attention and do your readings and make an effort to participate. A class with Lenze is ALWAYS a great idea.
If you're a PoliSci major/minor at NAU and you don't take a class with Lenze, I feel sorry for you. Lenze is awesome, and this class is really fun. Especially the simulation at the end of the semester where you try to make peace in the Middle East. You will not regret taking this class.
Dr Lenze is a prof who is clearly passionate about the subject, and that carries over to lectures. With the MidEast it would be easy to get sucked into the history so much that class would be boring, but he finds ways to make even the driest parts of it good! Plus, the simulation at the end of the semester will be the most fun ever in a POS class.
I took his class online during the summer- 3 credits in 4 weeks! I think honestly this was the most challenging class I have taken thus far, but the challenges is what pushed me to do so well. He really teaches you how to think. He also grades extremely fair, and is easy to contact through email. Would take a class with him in person based on this.
Lenze is an awesome teacher! I took his class to fill a requirement and ended up being very intrigued! lots of notes but he walks you through them with class discussions. always willing to help! take his class!
Good class, I wish I had showed up more. Lenze is an honest teacher who is very straight forward. If you play by his rules (which isn't difficult), you'll do well.
Very good class. The simulation at the end of the course is mandatory, but attendance is not required for the rest of the course. As long as you listen in class and ask questions, you will pass with flying colors. Essays are graded Quality > Quantity.
There are a lot of notes involved but Dr. Lenze is very nice and willing to help whether you have a question during his lecture or if you come in after or before class.
Go to your louie account and sign up for his class. Now.
He's a really cool professor. Love listening to his lectures but you need to stay on top of the reading and take studious notes along with doing all the modules to keep your grade up. Do the work and you'll pass the class.
Great lecturer and a sass master. He is very good at ending class early, and all the work is online. However, going to class can be enjoyable and should be taken seriously.
There is not much to say about Professor Lenze. He knows the information very well, and has occasionally interesting lectures. Didn't particularly look forward to the course.
I'd say Professor Lenze is an average teacher the class is really easy just show up take notes and you'll pass. Every once in awhile he'll he get dates wrong so stay on top of that, but overall a great teacher.
Professor Lenze is very passionate about this topic. Makes everything very clear. And always clarifies anything you have questions about.
Lenze is very intelligent when it comes to Political knowledge, and he is able to make class interesting. He adds humor to his lectures and helps you visualize certain concepts pretty clearly. One thing I disliked were his study guides. They lacked information that ended up being on the exams, so beware of that. He lets you use notecards though
Political science is not a class that sparked my interest. Although, Lenze made the class somewhat interesting. Weekly discussion posts, readings and quizzes. Must read both the additional readings and textbook chapters. Overall, fair professor. Makes you work for grade. Does allow a note card on exams!
Dr. Lenze is the one professor that I look forward to seeing every week, in fact I wish I could see him everyday! While listening to his lectures you have no doubt in your mind that he is anything less than an expert in World Politics. The work load isn't too heavy, I just hope your'e good at handling the pressure of his exams. Take his class!
Great professor. I enjoyed the lectures, you just have to make sure to be diligent about doing the online weekly quizzes on time. Otherwise it's an easy class if you pay attention and care about politics.
I took Professor Lenze's World Politics course almost five years ago (Spring of 2011). Bit of a late review, I know, but the fact that I'm sitting here now remembering him as one of my best professors says something. He was very good at teaching and keeping the topic interesting. Definitely knew his stuff; real smart. Respectful and really cared.
Paul is an awesome professor! Very funny and enthusiastic, but the class itself isn't the easiest I've taken, it was very hard for me to pay attention, but he is so passionate about his profession it makes the class much more enjoyable.
Dr. Lenze knowledgeable in the realm of politics like you would not believe. His lectures are always interesting and he explains all material effectively. If you read the scripts and take notes you'll do fine on exams. He gives review guides which are helpful too. You get what you work for with Lenze. He reads and responds to discussion post too.
Stellar teacher, get's to the point. Knows what he's doing and is funny.
Lenze is very knowledgeable and makes his lectures very interesting. His tests are based heavily off the study guide, so notes taken from lecture are the answers to the test. For the papers, have a TA check over them first, most will give honest productive feedback. If you don't understand something, ask for help. He's very approachable.
Paul's class was a boring, repetitive, & belittling intro to globalization. The TA graded the papers on topics not listed in the prompt, which made it tough to improve. This was enhanced by the fact that there were only 4 papers & 2 essay exams in the whole syllabus, no other grades. Felt like a massive waste of time.
Professor Lenze provided very interesting lectures that allowed you to take and observe the content into real life. I took his POS100 class and the reading was not essential to pass, but supplementary. Only one assignment per week and we were allowed to type a 2x4 flashcard for the midterm and final. Only 3 papers and no tests or quizzes either.
He's a great teacher, he's very understanding when you miss out on a quiz just email him! But prepare for his lectures, he speaks really fast and he doesn'y uses power points. Bringing a recorder or something might help! But he's really funny and nice, one of the best teachers ever
Dr. Lenze is an amazing professor! He is very knowledgable of what he is talking about, and his lectures are quite interesting. He makes it easy for you to take notes as well, with an outline on the projector each class period! Do the discussion posts and quizzes, and you're golden.
Class is very thorough. Reading course books is optional, but you must research material outside of class to understand lectures. Paper grades very tough, but fair. Take lots of notes, he provides most of the info for papers in lectures, which are pre-organized. Have him read over papers before submitting them, but be able to answer questions.
Dr. Lenze is a great professor. The exams are extremely difficult but if you go to class and take notes, you'll get a decent grade. He is extremely intelligent and really knows hat he's talking about in his lectures. Very interesting class!
Wasn't clear for the assignments grading and wasn't worth coming to class too.
Dr. Lenze is an amazing professor. He explains the material clearly, the exams match the material taught, and he's just an overall funny and good guy. He respects the students and wishes for their success.
Easily one of the best professor I've had. His lectures are very engaging and makes learning about Political Science fun. So long as you take good notes and show up to class, you should do fine. Would take again.
Lenze is a really funny and knows a lot about what he lectures on. He makes the time go by fast in class and he tells good stories as he's talking. He's a good professor and if you show up to class you'll get extra credit sometimes (if most of the class is gone). I loved this class and I'd definitely take it from Lenze if you can.
Difficult class - take notes on everything he says, he doesn't use a presentation in his lectures. Weekly quizzes and discussion posts and 3 exams. Funny and passionate.
He is a very good professor who has a lot of passion for what he's teaching, which makes his lectures very interesting. Attendance isn't mandatory but a lot of what's on his tests are based on his leactures. Homework is the same every week. Be prepared to read the textbook and write an essay every week. Overall, a very good professor.
Very good professor! His lectures are very entertaining and fun. He does speak super fast so make sure to take good notes or ask for clarification.
I did not like him at all. He was a cool guy but it is literally impossible to get a perfect score on a weekly paper, he even says this, so he is taking points off for no reason. The tests are 65% of your final grade and there are only 3 of them. Also he does not use slides and his lectures are very boring. The class average was a 70% as well.
Paul was great and he always keeps you on your toes. I like how he is so good at explaining things. Although he does talk relatively fast you can ask him to record his lectures, I would definitely recommend that. Overall a good class and learned so much.
Professor Lenze is truly passionate about politics. The lectures can be somewhat boring because there are no powerpoints, but he discusses a lot of information that can be on the test. Tests also pull some material from the readings. There are papers and quizzes due every week but aren't bad. He offers a lot of extra credit too which is great!
The class is hard! He likes to use trick questions on exams.
Dr. Lenze is a great lecturer and you will be surprised when he gives random extra credit points. It pays to go to class.
Dr. Lenze is an amazing professor and clearly very passionate about what he lectures. Although there is a weekly discussion paper due the material covered is very interesting.
Dr. Lenze is by far my favorite teacher at NAU. He's super cool and always open to talk about politics. His office hours are very useful and I would take advantage of them. Even though he is lecture heavy, the topics he mentions are very interesting!! Super stoked to take another one of his classes :)
Dr. Lenze is a great professor. His lectures are interesting and makes you invested in the subject at hand. I recommend this class to anyone who needs to fill a liberal studies requirement.
Paul is a very good lecturer. He will encourage students to stop his lectures to ask questions so he can clarify or slow down. Make sure to write every single word he says. He will put everything on the test so you need to take clear and detailed notes. Also he lets you bring a 3x5 notecard on the midterms and final, there are no other tests.
Paul is one of my favorite professors. His lectures are so interesting and you really get involved with the material. He is a pretty chill guy, go to office hours! He gives (a lot) of extra credit at random times for showing up so go to every class. I loved showing up and hearing what he had to say. Engaging professor and cool class. Just take it.
Professor Lenze is very passionate about the subject that he is teaching which engages the students even more. Go to class and pay attention to the lectures. Weekly quizzes and papers. These aren't too bad. Test questions are tricky so read carefully. Overall pretty good class.
Interesting and engaging lectures
Best teacher I have ever had. He is an expert in middle eastern politics and he explains everything in depth so well. Reading the assigned chapter would definitely help for lectures. Be prepared to take a lot of notes. It helps to record him too. He is amazing
The TA was a hard grader- not always consistent with the recommendations from Lenze. Lenze will overlook but is allowed to give a worse grade. I knew nothing about the Middle East and had a hard time grasping concepts when he lectures by reading off a paper he prepared for notes. Few lectures were engaging. There is a lot of reading.
Genuinely loved this class and Dr. Lenze was definitely the reason why. He made this class fun and easy to understand. The only thing that made it difficult was the TA who was a very tough and mean grader but over-looking that this class was by far one of my favorites that I've taken here and I hope to take another class with Dr. Lenze!
This class was difficult because of how content heavy it was, especially on such a complex topic of the Middle East. Dr. Lenze's lectures are very interesting and he prompts you to engage, otherwise your participation grade will lower. There are a few, really long writing assignments, but you're provided with ample information. He replies fast too!
Prof Lenze was by far one of my favorite professors, he gives good examples in lectures and wants you to succeed. Asking for help is welcome and he definitely cares.
Dr. Lenze is by far the most amazing teacher. He cares about his students and will answer all questions. you don't particularly have to go to class but he was the highlight of my week and I truly believe you can learn a lot in any of his classes. you do a textbook chapter, inquizzitive, and write a paper weekly. I highly recommend him. amazing guy!
probably one of the best profs at this school. Talking with him in office hours is super fun, and he is the most down to earth, intelligent person. If I had more time in my schedule, I would take every class he teaches! Participation is really important-- but it's really fun, too. Warning: be prepared to watch lots of John Oliver.
Teaches in a way that's very belittling. Half of the questions on tests don't even come from his dry lectures. There's a one page assignment every week and make sure you write with a liberal point of view. He's one of those professors that takes points off if your writing is even just a tad conservative. Needs to chill with all the John Oliver.
I disagree with the previous review. The second attempts and noncumulative nature of the exams make them the most easygoing I've had all year. Although weekly, the response papers make up for optional class participation. Dr. Lenze sometimes talks fast in his lectures but is always willing to slow down or repeat material for students. Humorous too.
Dr. Lenze is a no-BS guy through and through. He's insanely passionate and isn't afraid to tell you what's up. His teaching style is unconventional compared to other professors, but I really enjoyed going to his class. Go to class and TAKE DETAILED NOTES, he loves casual name-dropping on exams. The TA grades tough but he was super understanding.
Its really obvious that is is just a part timer and not a real prof. Lectures are really dry and he gets mad easily if you try to explain the side of an issue he does not agree with.
The teacher is probably one of the least understanding and least accommodating professors that NAU has to offer. If you ever get the opportunity to take his class don't. I ended this class with a 79% and he basically told me to take a hike when sending him an email regarding the grade. "Unbecoming" was the word he used to describe a nice email.
THIS TEACHER NEEDS TO STOP TEACHING AND FIND A CAREER THAT HE ENJOYS INSTEAD OF RUINING OUR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE
Dr. Lenze is the most intelligent, caring, and genuine professor at Northern Arizona University in the political science international relations department. I have taken his classes all four years that I have attended this University, and learned the most from him as a professor. This Middle Eastren politics class is by far my favorite class ever.
Some of the grading was bs and if you had him look it over again, as he offered to do if you disagreed with the grade, he'd lower it out of spite. But most importantly, I cannot listen to "We didn't start the fire" without thinking of this class
Ask a question, don't ask a question, dude just talks and talks mostly about pointless junk. Pojects bs about how he k knows more than you. He's a Prof he should know more but keeps passively aggressively trying to prove he knows more without teaching anything. Just weird waste of time and kind of raging sometimes
Prof is great, had him freshman year for pos120 and then again for pos380. He thinks politics are sexy and is very passionate about international relations. Tough grader though, he had us take the midterm in class and gave us a green book and it was so hard my friend with a 4.0 gpa withdrew the class. If you like politics, take the class for sure
MAKES YOU BUY HIS OVERPRICED BOOK JUST TO TEST YOU ON IT AS IF WE WOULD KNOW AS MUCH AS HE DOES??? plus he's white teaching middle eastern politics with very clear bias against common human rights because it makes more political sense to him...
Overrated. Lenze is funny, witty and knowledgeable about the ME/IR, though has a massive superiority complex. Normally, professors assigning their book is fine, but this is extreme. You write your midterm/final using it. Plus, the much of the lectures are intros for his book topics. His book is interesting but extremely confusing and hard to read.
Cares and teaches you how to critically think for yourself.
I don't recommend this professor. The lectures were long and wordy and usually very confusing. Most of the time the rubric for an assignment wasnt released until right before the essay was due (the only assignments were essays and midterm/final). He continued to lecture right up until the last day of realing week which I found very unhelpful.
I had a very hard time in this class. the lectures were hard to follow and hard to understand if you have limited world politics knowledge.
Overall, excellent professor
Dr. Lenze is an exceptional professor whom I wholeheartedly endorse to anyone seeking academic excellence. Succeeding in Dr. Lenze's courses is straightforward: thoroughly read the syllabus, align your readings with its guidelines, and you'll succeed. From my experience, Dr. Lenze appreciates and values the ability to support one's statements.
Dr. Lenze is a professor who sets high standards for academic performance, yet he demonstrates understanding when unforeseen circumstances arise and you communicate with him. Regarding grading, Dr. Lenze maintains rigor, which I saw as an opportunity to enhance the quality of my work. Through this challenge, my grades also saw improvement.
The Professor his smart and communicates the information well. The assignments are easy and it is hard to fall behind. He gives good feedback which allows students to improve drastically and quickly. I would say the only reason I wouldn't take a class by him again is that he was hard to reach for help outside of the class. The class was online.
Incredibly rude and harsh to students. Capstone classes are difficult enough without having to appease a needlessly abrasive professor. Highly recommend taking another poli sci teacher who is more good-natured.
Paul Lenze is a really great guy. His lectures are a little boring though and he kinda runs around the room when he's talking. The class was relatively easy though and he does do a fun simulation of the Model UN where each student gets to represent a country.
He really cares about the students and the topic, he really has inspired me with a love for international relations and has been a helpful mentor
Lenze is an acquired taste. He can be unclear, venty, and rude if he's in a bad mood. He is very specific about writing style, and these specifications are not in the assignment instructions. The grading distribution was not great and put ridiculous amounts of weight on three assignments. My one suggestion is to go to his office hours.
Passionate and highly knowledgeable on ME/IR. His classes are difficult mainly because the topics are complex. He wants his students to understand the material so he will re-explain and help you understand if you ask. Your grade truly reflects the effort you put into the class. Read the material and ask questions. You will succeed. Great classes.
